If thine enemy be
hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be
thirsty, give him water to
drink:
If your enemy is
hungry, give him food to eat, and if he is
thirsty, give him water to
drink.
He that sendeth a message by the hand of a
fool cutteth off the feet, and
drinketh damage.
Like cutting off one’s own feet or
drinking violence is the sending of a message by the hand of a
fool.
It is not for kings, O
Lemuel, it is not for kings to
drink wine; nor for princes strong
drink:
It is not for kings, O
Lemuel, it is not for kings to
drink wine, or for rulers to
crave strong
drink,
lest they
drink and
forget what is decreed, depriving all the
oppressed of justice.
Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.
Give strong drink to one who is perishing, and wine to the bitter in soul.
Let him
drink, and
forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.
Let him
drink and
forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.
There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.
Nothing is better for a man than to eat and drink and enjoy his work. I have also seen that this is from the hand of God.
And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God.
and also that every man should eat and drink and find satisfaction in all his labor—this is the gift of God.
Behold that which I have seen: it is good and comely for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labour that he taketh under the sun all the days of his life, which God giveth him: for it is his portion.
Here is what I have seen to be good and fitting: to eat and drink, and to find satisfaction in all the labor one does under the sun during the few days of life that God has given him—for this is his lot.
Then I
commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to
drink, and to be
merry: for that shall
abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun.
So I
commended the enjoyment of life, because there is nothing better for a man under the sun than to eat and
drink and be
merry. For this joy will
accompany him in his labor during the days of his life that God gives him under the sun.
Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and
drink thy wine with a
merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works.
Go, eat your bread with joy, and
drink your wine with a
cheerful heart, for God has already approved your works:
I am come into my garden, my sister, my
spouse: I have gathered my
myrrh with my
spice; I have eaten my
honeycomb with my honey; I have
drunk my wine with my milk: eat, O friends;
drink,
yea,
drink abundantly, O beloved.
I have come to my garden, my sister, my
bride; I have gathered my
myrrh with my
spice. I have eaten my
honeycomb with my honey; I have
drunk my wine with my milk. Eat, O friends, and
drink;
drink freely, O beloved.
I would lead thee, and bring thee into my mother’s house, who would
instruct me: I would cause thee to
drink of
spiced wine of the juice of my
pomegranate.
I would lead you and bring you to the house of my mother who taught me. I would give you
spiced wine to
drink, the
nectar of my pomegranates.
Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong
drink; that continue until night, till wine inflame them!
Woe to those who rise early in the morning in pursuit of strong
drink, who
linger into the evening, to be inflamed by wine.
Woe unto them that are mighty to
drink wine, and men of strength to
mingle strong
drink:
Woe to those who are heroes in
drinking wine and champions in
mixing strong
drink,
Prepare the table, watch in the
watchtower, eat,
drink: arise, ye princes, and
anoint the shield.
They prepare a table, they lay out a
carpet, they eat, they
drink! Rise up, O princes, oil the shields!
And behold joy and
gladness,
slaying oxen, and killing sheep, eating flesh, and
drinking wine: let us eat and
drink; for to
morrow we shall die.
But look, there is joy and
gladness,
butchering of cattle and slaughtering of sheep, eating of meat and
drinking of wine: “Let us eat and
drink, for
tomorrow we die!”
They shall not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to them that drink it.
They no longer sing and
drink wine; strong
drink is bitter to those who
consume it.
But they also have
erred through wine, and through strong
drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have
erred through strong
drink, they are
swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong
drink; they
err in vision, they
stumble in judgment.
It shall even be as when an
hungry man dreameth, and, behold, he eateth; but he awaketh, and his soul is empty: or as when a
thirsty man dreameth, and, behold, he
drinketh; but he awaketh, and, behold, he is
faint, and his soul hath
appetite: so shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight against mount
Zion.
as when a
hungry man dreams he is eating, then awakens still
hungry; as when a
thirsty man dreams he is
drinking, then awakens
faint and
parched. So will it be for all the many nations who go to battle against Mount
Zion.
Stay
yourselves, and wonder; cry ye out, and cry: they are
drunken, but not with wine; they
stagger, but not with strong
drink.
For the
vile person will speak
villany, and his heart will work iniquity, to
practise hypocrisy, and to utter error against the LORD, to make empty the soul of the
hungry, and he will cause the
drink of the
thirsty to fail.
But
Rabshakeh said, Hath my master sent me to thy master and to thee to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and
drink their own
piss with you?
But the
Rabshakeh replied, “Has my master sent me to speak these words only to you and your master, and not to the men sitting on the wall, who are destined with you to eat their own dung and
drink their own
urine?”
Hearken not to
Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me: and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig tree, and
drink ye every one the waters of his own
cistern;
Do not
listen to
Hezekiah, for this is what the king of Assyria says: Make peace with me and come out to me. Then every one of you will eat from his own vine and his own fig tree, and
drink water from his own
cistern,
The beast of the field shall honour me, the
dragons and the owls: because I give waters in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert, to give
drink to my people, my chosen.
The beasts of the field will honor Me, the jackals and the ostriches, because I provide water in the wilderness and rivers in the desert, to give drink to My chosen people.
The smith with the
tongs both worketh in the coals, and fashioneth it with hammers, and worketh it with the strength of his arms:
yea, he is
hungry, and his strength faileth: he
drinketh no water, and is
faint.
The
blacksmith takes a tool and labors over the coals; he fashions an
idol with hammers and forges it with his strong arms. Yet he grows
hungry and loses his strength; he fails to
drink water and grows
faint.
Thus saith thy Lord the LORD, and thy God that pleadeth the cause of his people, Behold, I have taken out of thine hand the cup of
trembling, even the
dregs of the cup of my
fury; thou shalt no more
drink it again:
Thus says your Lord, the LORD, even your God, who defends His people: “See, I have removed from your hand the cup of
staggering. From that
goblet, the cup of My
fury, you will never
drink again.
Come ye, say they, I will
fetch wine, and we will fill ourselves with strong
drink; and to
morrow shall be as this day, and much more abundant.
“Come, let me get the wine, let us
imbibe the strong
drink, and
tomorrow will be like
today, only far better!”
Among the smooth stones of the stream is thy portion; they, they are thy lot: even to them hast thou poured a drink offering, thou hast offered a meat offering. Should I receive comfort in these?
Your portion is among the smooth stones of the valley; indeed, they are your lot. Even to them you have poured out a drink offering and offered a grain offering. Should I relent because of these?
Thou shalt also
suck the milk of the Gentiles, and shalt
suck the breast of kings: and thou shalt know that I the LORD am thy Saviour and thy
Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob.
You will
drink the milk of nations and
nurse at the breasts of
royalty; you will know that I, the LORD, am your
Savior and your
Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.
The LORD hath
sworn by his right hand, and by the arm of his strength, Surely I will no more give thy corn to be meat for thine enemies; and the sons of the stranger shall not
drink thy wine, for the which thou hast laboured:
The LORD has
sworn by His right hand and by His mighty arm: “Never again will I give your grain to your enemies for food, nor will foreigners
drink the new wine for which you have
toiled.
But they that have gathered it shall eat it, and praise the LORD; and they that have brought it together shall
drink it in the courts of my
holiness.
For those who harvest grain will eat it and praise the LORD, and those who gather grapes will drink the wine in My holy courts.”
But ye are they that
forsake the LORD, that
forget my holy mountain, that prepare a table for that
troop, and that furnish the
drink offering unto that number.
But you who
forsake the LORD, who
forget My holy mountain, who set a table for Fortune and fill
bowls of mixed wine for
Destiny,
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, my servants shall eat, but ye shall be
hungry: behold, my servants shall
drink, but ye shall be
thirsty: behold, my servants shall
rejoice, but ye shall be
ashamed:
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: “My servants will eat, but you will go
hungry; My servants will
drink, but you will go
thirsty; My servants will
rejoice, but you will be put to shame.
That ye may
suck, and be satisfied with the breasts of her consolations; that ye may milk out, and be delighted with the abundance of her glory.
so that you may
nurse and be satisfied at her comforting breasts; you may
drink deeply and delight
yourselves in her glorious abundance.
And now what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the waters of Sihor? or what hast thou to do in the way of Assyria, to drink the waters of the river?
Now what will you gain on your way to Egypt to drink the waters of the Nile? What will you gain on your way to Assyria to drink the waters of the Euphrates?
The children gather wood, and the fathers
kindle the fire, and the women
knead their
dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out
drink offerings unto other gods, that they may
provoke me to anger.
The sons gather wood, the fathers light the fire, and the women
knead the
dough to make cakes for the Queen of Heaven; they pour out
drink offerings to other gods to
provoke Me to anger.
Why do we sit still?
assemble yourselves, and let us enter into the defenced cities, and let us be silent there: for the LORD our God hath put us to silence, and given us water of gall to
drink, because we have
sinned against the LORD.
Why are we just sitting here? Gather together, let us
flee to the fortified cities and perish there, for the LORD our God has
doomed us. He has given us poisoned water to
drink, because we have
sinned against the LORD.
Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will feed them, even this people, with
wormwood, and give them water of gall to
drink.
Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: “Behold, I will feed this people
wormwood and give them poisoned water to
drink.
Neither shall men
tear themselves for them in
mourning, to comfort them for the dead; neither shall men give them the cup of
consolation to
drink for their father or for their mother.
No food will be offered to comfort those who
mourn the dead; not even a cup of
consolation will be given for the loss of a father or mother.
Thou shalt not also go into the house of feasting, to sit with them to eat and to drink.
You must not enter a house where there is feasting and sit down with them to eat and drink.
And the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses of the kings of Judah, shall be
defiled as the place of
Tophet, because of all the houses upon whose roofs they have burned incense unto all the host of heaven, and have poured out
drink offerings unto other gods.
The houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah will be
defiled like that place, Topheth—all the houses on whose rooftops they burned incense to all the host of heaven and poured out
drink offerings to other gods.”
Shalt thou reign, because thou closest
thyself in
cedar? did not thy father eat and
drink, and do judgment and justice, and then it was well with him?
Does it make you a king to
excel in
cedar? Did not your father have food and
drink? He administered justice and righteousness, and so it went well with him.
Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts concerning the prophets; Behold, I will feed them with
wormwood, and make them
drink the water of gall: for from the prophets of Jerusalem is
profaneness gone forth into all the land.
Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts says concerning the prophets: “I will feed them
wormwood and give them poisoned water to
drink, for from the prophets of Jerusalem
ungodliness has spread throughout the land.”
For thus saith the LORD God of Israel unto me; Take the wine cup of this
fury at my hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send thee, to
drink it.
This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me: “Take from My hand this cup of the wine of wrath, and make all the nations to whom I send you drink from it.
And they shall
drink, and be moved, and be
mad, because of the sword that I will send among them.
And they will
drink and
stagger and go out of their minds, because of the sword that I will send among them.”
Then took I the cup at the LORD’S hand, and made all the nations to drink, unto whom the LORD had sent me:
So I took the cup from the LORD’s hand and made all the nations drink from it, each one to whom the LORD had sent me,
And all the kings of the north, far and near, one with another, and all the kingdoms of the world, which are upon the face of the earth: and the king of Sheshach shall drink after them.
all the kings of the north, both near and far, one after another—all the kingdoms on the face of the earth. And after all of them, the king of Sheshach will drink it too.
Therefore thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel;
Drink ye, and be
drunken, and
spue, and fall, and rise no more, because of the sword which I will send among you.
“Then you are to tell them that this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘
Drink, get
drunk, and
vomit. Fall down and never get up again, because of the sword I will send among you.’
And it shall be, if they refuse to take the cup at thine hand to drink, then shalt thou say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Ye shall certainly drink.
If they refuse to take the cup from your hand and drink it, you are to tell them that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘You most certainly must drink it!
And the Chaldeans, that fight against this city, shall come and set fire on this city, and burn it with the houses, upon whose roofs they have offered incense unto
Baal, and poured out
drink offerings unto other gods, to
provoke me to anger.
And the Chaldeans who are fighting against this city will come in, set it on fire, and burn it, along with the houses of those who
provoked Me to anger by burning incense to
Baal on their rooftops and by pouring out
drink offerings to other gods.
Go unto the house of the
Rechabites, and speak unto them, and bring them into the house of the LORD, into one of the chambers, and give them wine to
drink.
“Go to the house of the
Rechabites, speak to them, and bring them to one of the chambers of the house of the LORD to offer them a
drink of wine.”
And I set before the sons of the house of the
Rechabites pots full of wine, and cups, and I said unto them,
Drink ye wine.
Then I set pitchers full of wine and some cups before the men of the house of the
Rechabites, and I said to them, “
Drink some wine.”
But they said, We will drink no wine: for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying, Ye shall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your sons for ever:
“We do not
drink wine,” they replied, “for our
forefather Jonadab son of Rechab commanded us, ‘Neither you nor your descendants are ever to
drink wine.
Thus have we obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab our father in all that he hath charged us, to drink no wine all our days, we, our wives, our sons, nor our daughters;
And we have obeyed the voice of our
forefather Jonadab son of Rechab in all he commanded us. So we have not
drunk wine all our lives—neither we nor our wives nor our sons and daughters.
The words of Jonadab the son of Rechab, that he commanded his sons not to
drink wine, are performed; for unto this day they
drink none, but obey their father’s commandment: notwithstanding I have spoken unto you, rising early and speaking; but ye
hearkened not unto me.
The words of Jonadab son of Rechab have been carried out. He commanded his sons not to
drink wine, and they have not
drunk it to this very day because they have obeyed the command of their
forefather. But I have spoken to you again and again, and you have not obeyed Me!
But we will certainly do
whatsoever thing goeth forth out of our own mouth, to burn incense unto the queen of heaven, and to pour out
drink offerings unto her, as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: for then had we
plenty of
victuals, and were well, and saw no evil.
Instead, we will do everything we
vowed to do: We will burn incense to the Queen of Heaven and offer
drink offerings to her, just as we, our fathers, our kings, and our officials did in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. At that time we had
plenty of food and good things, and we saw no
disaster.
But since we left off to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, we have wanted all things, and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine.
But from the time we stopped burning incense to the Queen of Heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have lacked everything and have been perishing by sword and famine.”
And when we burned incense to the queen of heaven, and poured out drink offerings unto her, did we make her cakes to worship her, and pour out drink offerings unto her, without our men?
“Moreover,” said the women, “when we burned incense to the Queen of Heaven and poured out
drink offerings to her, was it without our husbands’ knowledge that we made
sacrificial cakes in her image and poured out
drink offerings to her?”
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saying; Ye and your wives have both spoken with your mouths, and fulfilled with your hand, saying, We will surely perform our vows that we have
vowed, to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out
drink offerings unto her: ye will surely
accomplish your vows, and surely perform your vows.
This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: As for you and your wives, you have spoken with your mouths and fulfilled with your hands your words: ‘We will surely perform our vows that we have made to burn incense to the Queen of Heaven and to pour out
drink offerings to her.’ Go
ahead, then, do what you have promised! Keep your vows!
For thus saith the LORD; Behold, they whose judgment was not to
drink of the cup have
assuredly drunken; and art thou he that shall altogether go unpunished? thou shalt not go unpunished, but thou shalt surely
drink of it.
For this is what the LORD says: “If those who do not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, can you possibly remain unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for you must drink it too.
And the basons, and the firepans, and the
bowls, and the caldrons, and the candlesticks, and the spoons, and the cups; that which was of gold in gold, and that which was of silver in silver, took the captain of the guard away.
The captain of the guard also took away the basins, censers,
sprinkling bowls, pots, lampstands, pans, and
drink offering
bowls—anything made of pure gold or fine silver.
We have
drunken our water for money; our wood is sold unto us.
We must
buy the water we
drink; our wood comes at a price.
Thou shalt
drink also water by measure, the sixth part of an
hin: from time to time shalt thou
drink.
You are also to measure out a sixth of a
hin of water to
drink, and you are to
drink it at set times.
Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, behold, I will break the staff of bread in Jerusalem: and they shall eat bread by weight, and with care; and they shall
drink water by measure, and with
astonishment:
Then He told me, “Son of man, I am going to cut off the supply of food in Jerusalem. They will anxiously eat bread rationed by weight, and in
despair they will
drink water by measure.
Son of man, eat thy bread with
quaking, and
drink thy water with
trembling and with carefulness;
And say unto the people of the land, Thus saith the Lord GOD of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and of the land of Israel; They shall eat their bread with carefulness, and
drink their water with
astonishment, that her land may be
desolate from all that is therein, because of the violence of all them that dwell therein.
Then tell the people of the land that this is what the Lord GOD says about those living in Jerusalem and in the land of Israel: ‘They will eat their bread with
anxiety and
drink their water in
dread, for their land will be
stripped of everything in it because of the violence of all who dwell in it.
For when I had brought them into the land, for the which I lifted up mine hand to give it to them, then they saw every high hill, and all the thick trees, and they offered there their sacrifices, and there they presented the
provocation of their offering: there also they made their sweet savour, and poured out there their
drink offerings.
When I brought them into the land that I
swore to give them and they saw any high hill or
leafy tree, there they offered their sacrifices, presented offerings that
provoked Me, sent up their
fragrant incense, and poured out their
drink offerings.
Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou shalt
drink of thy sister’s cup deep and large: thou shalt be
laughed to
scorn and had in
derision; it containeth much.
This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘You will
drink your sister’s cup, a cup deep and wide. It will bring
scorn and
derision, for it holds so much.
Thou shalt even
drink it and
suck it out, and thou shalt break the sherds thereof, and
pluck off thine own breasts: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD.
You will
drink it and
drain it; you will
dash it to pieces, and
tear your breasts. For I have spoken,’ declares the Lord GOD.
Behold, therefore I will deliver thee to the men of the east for a possession, and they shall set their palaces in thee, and make their dwellings in thee: they shall eat thy fruit, and they shall drink thy milk.
therefore I will indeed give you as a possession to the people of the East. They will set up their camps and pitch their tents among you. They will eat your fruit and drink your milk.
To the end that none of all the trees by the waters
exalt themselves for their height, neither shoot up their top among the thick boughs, neither their trees stand up in their height, all that
drink water: for they are all delivered unto death, to the
nether parts of the earth, in the midst of the children of men, with them that go down to the pit.
This happened so that no other trees by the waters would become great in height and set their tops among the clouds, and no other well-watered trees would reach them in height. For they have all been
consigned to death, to the depths of the earth, among the mortals who descend to the Pit.’
I made the nations to
shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him down to
hell with them that descend into the pit: and all the trees of
Eden, the choice and best of
Lebanon, all that
drink water, shall be comforted in the
nether parts of the earth.
I made the nations
quake at the sound of its
downfall, when I cast it down to
Sheol with those who descend to the Pit. Then all the trees of
Eden, the choicest and best of
Lebanon, all the well-watered trees, were
consoled in the earth below.
Seemeth it a small thing unto you to have eaten up the good pasture, but ye must
tread down with your feet the residue of your pastures? and to have
drunk of the deep waters, but ye must foul the residue with your feet?
Is it not enough for you to feed on the good pasture? Must you also
trample the rest of the pasture with your feet? Is it not enough for you to
drink the clear waters? Must you also
muddy the rest with your feet?
And as for my flock, they eat that which ye have
trodden with your feet; and they
drink that which ye have fouled with your feet.
Why must My flock feed on what your feet have
trampled, and
drink what your feet have
muddied?’
And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD; Speak unto every
feathered fowl, and to every beast of the field,
Assemble yourselves, and come; gather
yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do sacrifice for you, even a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel, that ye may eat flesh, and
drink blood.
And as for you, son of man, this is what the Lord GOD says: Call out to every kind of bird and to every beast of the field: ‘
Assemble and come together from all around to the
sacrificial feast that I am preparing for you, a great feast on the mountains of Israel. There you will eat flesh and
drink blood.
Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and
drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of
Bashan.
You will eat the flesh of the mighty and
drink the blood of the princes of the earth as though they were rams, lambs, goats, and bulls—all the
fattened animals of
Bashan.
And ye shall eat fat till ye be full, and
drink blood till ye be
drunken, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you.
At the sacrifice I am preparing, you will eat fat until you are
gorged and
drink blood until you are
drunk.
Neither shall any priest drink wine, when they enter into the inner court.
No priest may drink wine before he enters the inner court.
And it shall be the prince’s part to give burnt offerings, and meat offerings, and
drink offerings, in the feasts, and in the new moons, and in the sabbaths, in all
solemnities of the house of Israel: he shall prepare the sin offering, and the meat offering, and the burnt offering, and the peace offerings, to make
reconciliation for the house of Israel.
And it shall be the prince’s part to provide the burnt offerings, grain offerings, and
drink offerings for the feasts, New Moons, and Sabbaths—for all the appointed feasts of the house of Israel. He will provide the sin offerings, grain offerings, burnt offerings, and peace offerings to make
atonement for the house of Israel.
And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your
drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me
endanger my head to the king.
but he said to Daniel, “I fear my lord the king, who has assigned your food and
drink. For why should he see your faces looking
thinner than those of the other young men your age? You would
endanger my head before the king!”
Prove thy servants, I
beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us
pulse to eat, and water to
drink.
“Please test your servants for ten days. Let us be given only vegetables to eat and water to drink.
Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should
drink; and gave them
pulse.
So the
steward continued to
withhold their choice food and the wine they were to
drink, and he gave them vegetables instead.
Belshazzar, whiles he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father
Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might
drink therein.
Under the influence of the wine,
Belshazzar gave orders to bring in the gold and silver vessels that
Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken from the temple in Jerusalem, so that the king could
drink from them, along with his nobles, his wives, and his concubines.
For their mother hath played the
harlot: she that conceived them hath done
shamefully: for she said, I will go after my lovers, that give me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, mine oil and my
drink.
For their mother has played the
harlot and has conceived them in disgrace. For she thought, ‘I will go after my lovers, who give me bread and water, wool and linen, oil and
drink.’
Their
drink is
sour: they have committed
whoredom continually: her rulers with shame do love, Give ye.
Awake, ye drunkards, and
weep; and
howl, all ye
drinkers of wine, because of the new wine; for it is cut off from your mouth.
Wake up, you drunkards, and
weep;
wail, all you
drinkers of wine, because of the sweet wine, for it has been cut off from your mouth.
The meat offering and the
drink offering is cut off from the house of the LORD; the priests, the LORD’S ministers,
mourn.
Grain and
drink offerings have been cut off from the house of the LORD; the priests are in
mourning, those who minister before the LORD.
Gird yourselves, and
lament, ye priests:
howl, ye ministers of the altar: come, lie all night in
sackcloth, ye ministers of my God: for the meat offering and the
drink offering is
withholden from the house of your God.
Put on
sackcloth and
lament, O priests;
wail, O ministers of the altar. Come,
spend the night in
sackcloth, O ministers of my God, because the grain and
drink offerings are
withheld from the house of your God.
Who knoweth if he will return and
repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a meat offering and a
drink offering unto the LORD your God?
Who knows? He may turn and relent and leave a blessing behind Him— grain and drink offerings for the LORD your God.
And they have cast lots for my people; and have given a boy for an
harlot, and sold a
girl for wine, that they might
drink.
And they lay themselves down upon clothes laid to
pledge by every altar, and they
drink the wine of the condemned in the house of their god.
They lie down beside every altar on garments taken in
pledge. And in the house of their God, they
drink wine obtained through fines.
But ye gave the
Nazarites wine to
drink; and commanded the prophets, saying,
Prophesy not.
“But you made the Nazirites
drink wine and commanded the prophets not to
prophesy.
Hear this word, ye
kine of
Bashan, that are in the mountain of Samaria, which
oppress the poor, which
crush the
needy, which say to their masters, Bring, and let us
drink.
Hear this word, you cows of
Bashan on Mount Samaria, you women who
oppress the poor and
crush the
needy, who say to your husbands, “Bring us more to
drink.”
So two or three cities
wandered unto one city, to
drink water; but they were not satisfied: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
People

Forasmuch therefore as your
treading is upon the poor, and ye take from him burdens of wheat: ye have built houses of
hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not
drink wine of them.
Therefore, because you
trample on the poor and exact from him a tax of grain, you will never live in the stone houses you have built; you will never
drink the wine from the
lush vineyards you have planted.
You
drink wine by the bowlful and
anoint yourselves with the finest oils, but you fail to
grieve over the ruin of Joseph.
And I will bring again the captivity of my people of Israel, and they shall build the waste cities, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof; they shall also make gardens, and eat the fruit of them.
I will restore My people Israel from captivity; they will rebuild and inhabit the ruined cities. They will plant vineyards and drink their wine; they will make gardens and eat their fruit.
For as ye have
drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the heathen
drink continually,
yea, they shall
drink, and they shall
swallow down, and they shall be as though they had not been.
For as you
drank on My holy mountain, so all the nations will
drink continually. They will
drink and
gulp it down; they will be as if they had never existed.
And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through
Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast,
herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor
drink water:
Then he issued a
proclamation in
Nineveh: “By the decree of the king and his nobles: Let no man or beast,
herd or flock, taste anything at all. They must not eat or
drink.
