And when it was day, certain of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a
curse, saying that they would neither
eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.
When
daylight came, the Jews formed a
conspiracy and bound themselves with an oath not to
eat or drink until they had killed Paul.
And they came to the chief priests and elders, and said, We have bound ourselves under a great
curse, that we will
eat nothing until we have slain Paul.
They went to the chief priests and elders and said, “We have bound ourselves with a solemn oath not to eat anything until we have killed Paul.
But do not thou yield unto them: for there lie in wait for him of them more than forty men, which have bound themselves with an oath, that they will neither eat nor drink till they have killed him: and now are they ready, looking for a promise from thee.
Do not let them
persuade you, because more than forty men are waiting to
ambush him. They have bound themselves with an oath not to
eat or drink until they have killed him; they are ready now,
awaiting your consent.”
And while the day was coming on, Paul
besought them all to take meat, saying, This day is the
fourteenth day that ye have
tarried and continued fasting, having taken nothing.
Wherefore I pray you to take some meat: for this is for your health: for there shall not an hair fall from the head of any of you.
So for your own preservation, I
urge you to
eat something, because not a single hair of your head will be lost.”
And when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave
thanks to God in presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to
eat.
After he had said this, Paul took bread and gave
thanks to God in front of them all. Then he broke it and began to
eat.
And when they had
eaten enough, they
lightened the ship, and cast out the wheat into the sea.
After the men had
eaten their fill, they
lightened the ship by throwing the grain into the sea.
For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs.
For one person has faith to eat all things, while another, who is weak, eats only vegetables.
Let not him that
eateth despise him that
eateth not; and let not him which
eateth not judge him that
eateth: for God hath received him.
The one who
eats everything must not
belittle the one who does not, and the one who does not
eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted him.
He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he
doth not regard it. He that
eateth,
eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God
thanks; and he that
eateth not, to the Lord he
eateth not, and giveth God
thanks.
He who observes a special day does so to the Lord; he who
eats does so to the Lord, for he gives
thanks to God; and he who abstains does so to the Lord and gives
thanks to God.
But if thy brother be
grieved with thy meat, now walkest thou not
charitably. Destroy not him with thy meat, for whom Christ died.
If your brother is distressed by what you eat, you are no longer acting in love. Do not by your eating destroy your brother, for whom Christ died.
For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.
For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.
For meat destroy not the work of God. All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence.
Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a man to let his
eating be a
stumbling block.
It is good neither to
eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is
offended, or is made weak.
It is better not to
eat meat or drink wine or to do anything to cause your brother to
stumble.
And he that doubteth is
damned if he
eat, because he
eateth not of faith: for
whatsoever is not of faith is sin.
But the one who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and everything that is not from faith is sin.
As concerning therefore the
eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an
idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one.
So about
eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that an
idol is nothing at all in the world, and that there is no God but one.
Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the
idol unto this hour
eat it as a thing offered unto an
idol; and their conscience being weak is
defiled.
But not
everyone has this knowledge. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that they
eat such food as if it were sacrificed to an
idol. And since their conscience is weak, it is
defiled.
But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse.
But food does not bring us closer to God: We are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do.
For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the
idol’s temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be
emboldened to
eat those things which are offered to idols;
For if someone with a weak conscience sees you who are well informed
eating in an
idol’s temple, will he not be encouraged to
eat food sacrificed to idols?
Wherefore, if meat make my brother to
offend, I will
eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to
offend.
Therefore, if what I
eat causes my brother to
stumble, I will never
eat meat again, so that I will not cause him to
stumble.
Have we not power to eat and to drink?
Have we no right to food and to drink?
Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a
vineyard, and
eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and
eateth not of the milk of the flock?
Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a
vineyard and does not
eat of its fruit? Who tends a flock and does not drink of its milk?
Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?
Do you not know that those who work in the temple
eat of its food, and those who serve at the altar
partake of its offerings?
And did all eat the same spiritual meat;
They all
ate the same spiritual food
Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.
Do not be idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written: “The people sat down to
eat and to drink, and got up to
indulge in
revelry.”
Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?
Consider the people of Israel: Are not those who eat the sacrifices fellow partakers in the altar?
Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience,
If any of them that believe not
bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go;
whatsoever is set before you,
eat, asking no question for conscience sake.
If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat anything set before you without raising questions of conscience.
But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols,
eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord’s, and the
fulness thereof:
But if someone tells you, “This food was offered to idols,” then do not eat it, for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience—
Whether therefore ye
eat, or drink, or
whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.
When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to
eat the Lord’s
supper.
Now then, when you come together, it is not the Lord’s
Supper you
eat.
For in
eating every one taketh before other his own
supper: and one is
hungry, and another is
drunken.
For as you
eat, each of you goes
ahead without sharing his meal. While one remains
hungry, another gets
drunk.
What? have ye not houses to
eat and to drink in? or
despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not.
Don’t you have your own homes in which to
eat and drink? Or do you
despise the church of God and
humiliate those who have nothing? What can I say to you? Shall I praise you for this? No, I will not!
And when he had given
thanks, he
brake it, and said, Take,
eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in
remembrance of me.
and when He had given
thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in
remembrance of Me.”
For as often as ye
eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do
shew the Lord’s death till he come.
For as often as you
eat this bread and drink this cup, you
proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
Wherefore
whosoever shall
eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord,
unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
Therefore,
whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of
sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.
But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.
Each one must examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup.
For
anyone who
eats and drinks without recognizing the body
eats and drinks judgment on himself.
Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to
eat,
tarry one for another.
So, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for one another.
And if any man hunger, let him
eat at home; that ye come not together unto
condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I come.
If
anyone is
hungry, he should
eat at home, so that when you come together it will not result in judgment. And when I come, I will give instructions about the remaining matters.
If after the manner of men I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what advantageth it me, if the dead rise not? let us
eat and drink; for to
morrow we die.
If I fought wild beasts in Ephesus for human motives, what did I gain? If the dead are not raised, “Let us
eat and drink, for
tomorrow we die.”
For before that certain came from James, he did
eat with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the
circumcision.
For before certain men came from James, he used to
eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself, for fear of those in the
circumcision group.
Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an
holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
Therefore let no one judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a feast, a New Moon, or a Sabbath.
Neither did we
eat any man’s bread for
nought; but wrought with labour and
travail night and day, that we might not be chargeable to any of you:
nor did we
eat anyone’s food without paying for it. Instead, in labor and
toil, we worked night and day so that we would not be a burden to any of you.
For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.
For even while we were with you, we gave you this command: “If
anyone is unwilling to work, he shall not
eat.”
Now them that are such we command and
exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and
eat their own bread.
We command and
urge such people by our Lord Jesus Christ to begin working quietly to
earn their own living.
And their word will
eat as
doth a
canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus;
and the talk of such men will spread like
gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus,
We have an altar,
whereof they have no right to
eat which serve the tabernacle.
We have an altar from which those who serve at the tabernacle have no right to eat.
Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are
motheaten.
Your riches have
rotted and
moths have
eaten your clothes.
Your gold and silver is
cankered; and the
rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall
eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have
heaped treasure together for the last days.
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to
eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the
paradise of God.
He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who overcomes, I will grant the right to
eat from the tree of life in the
Paradise of God.
But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of
Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to
eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit
fornication.
But I have a few things against you, because some of you hold to the teaching of
Balaam, who taught Balak to place a
stumbling block before the Israelites so they would
eat food sacrificed to idols and commit sexual immorality.
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to
eat of the hidden
manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.
He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who overcomes, I will give the hidden
manna. I will also give him a white stone inscribed with a new name, known only to the one who receives it.
Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman
Jezebel, which calleth herself a
prophetess, to teach and to
seduce my servants to commit
fornication, and to
eat things sacrificed unto idols.
But I have this against you: You
tolerate that woman
Jezebel, who calls herself a
prophetess. By her teaching she misleads My servants to be sexually immoral and to
eat food sacrificed to idols.
And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. And he said unto me, Take it, and
eat it up; and it shall make thy
belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey.
And I went to the angel and said, “Give me the small
scroll.” “Take it and
eat it,” he said. “It will make your stomach bitter, but in your mouth it will be as sweet as honey.”
And I took the little book out of the angel’s hand, and
ate it up; and it was in my mouth sweet as honey: and as soon as I had
eaten it, my
belly was bitter.
So I took the small
scroll from the angel’s hand and
ate it; and it was as sweet as honey in my mouth, but when I had
eaten it, my stomach turned bitter.
And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall
hate the
whore, and shall make her
desolate and naked, and shall
eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.
And the ten horns and the beast that you saw will
hate the
prostitute. They will leave her
desolate and naked, and will
eat her flesh and burn her with fire.
That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.
so that you may
eat the flesh of kings and commanders and mighty men, of horses and riders, of
everyone slave and free, small and great.”
So all his people and his armies obey him:
furthermore he lieth down, he
eateth and drinketh, and taketh his rest:
And the children of Israel that came out of the captivity did eat, even all they that had separated themselves from the abominations of the people of the land, and sought the Lord.
Moreover ye shall never seek to have peace with them, that ye may be strong, and
eat the good things of the land, and that ye may leave the inheritance of the land unto your children for
evermore.
And remained there, and did
eat no meat nor drink water,
mourning for the great
iniquities of the multitude.
Go then, and eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send part to them that have nothing;
Then went they their way, every one to
eat and drink, and make
merry, and to give part to them that had nothing, and to make great
cheer;
Then had I
pity upon your mournings, and gave you
manna to
eat; so ye did
eat angels’ bread.
Up then, and
eat bread, and
forsake us not, as the
shepherd that leaveth his flock in the hands of cruel
wolves.
But go into a field of flowers, where no house is builded, and eat only the flowers of the field; taste no flesh, drink no wine, but eat flowers only;)
So I went my way into the field which is called Ardath, like as he commanded me; and there I sat among the flowers, and did eat of the herbs of the field, and the meat of the same satisfied me.
And I do now purpose not to return into the city, but here to stay, and neither to
eat nor drink, but continually to
mourn and to fast until I die.
And, behold, the head was turned with them that were with it, and did eat up the two feathers under the wing that would have reigned.
But I remained still in the field seven days, as the angel commanded me; and did eat only in those days of the flowers of the field, and had my meat of the herbs
They that be in the mountains shall die of hunger, and
eat their own flesh, and drink their own blood, for very hunger of bread, and
thirst of water.
And when we were carried away
captives to Nineve, all my brethren and those that were of my kindred did
eat of the bread of the Gentiles.
But I kept myself from eating;
Now when I was come home again, and my wife
Anna was restored unto me, with my son Tobias, in the feast of
Pentecost, which is the holy feast of the seven weeks, there was a good
dinner prepared me, in the which I sat down to
eat.
And when it was in my house, and began to cry, I said unto her, From whence is this
kid? is it not
stolen? render it to the owners; for it is not lawful to
eat any thing that is
stolen.
So the young man did as the angel commanded him; and when they had
roasted the fish, they did
eat it: then they both went on their way, till they drew near to Ecbatane.
So he communicated the matter with Raguel: and Raguel said to Tobias,
Eat and drink, and make
merry:
I have given my daughter in marriage to seven men, who died that night they came in unto her: nevertheless for the present be
merry. But Tobias said, I will
eat nothing here, till we agree and
swear one to another.
But she said, Hold thy peace, and
deceive me not; my son is dead. And she went out every day into the way which they went, and did
eat no meat on the
daytime, and ceased not whole nights to
bewail her son Tobias, until the fourteen days of the
wedding were
expired, which Raguel had
sworn that he should
spend there. Then Tobias said to Raguel, Let me go, for my father and my mother look no more to see me.
All these days I did appear unto you; but I did neither eat nor drink, but ye did see a vision.
For their
victuals fail them, and all their water is
scant, and they have determined to lay hands upon their cattle, and purposed to
consume all those things, that God hath forbidden them to
eat by his laws:
And
Judith said, I will not
eat thereof, lest there be an offence: but provision shall be made for me of the things that I have brought.
So she came in clean, and remained in the tent, until she did eat her meat at evening.
Then said he to Bagoas the
eunuch, who had charge over all that he had, Go now, and
persuade this Hebrew woman which is with thee, that she come unto us, and
eat and drink with us.
So she arose, and decked herself with her
apparel and all her woman’s
attire, and her
maid went and laid soft skins on the ground for her over against Holofernes, which she had received of Bagoas for her daily use, that she might sit and
eat upon them.
And that thine
handmaid hath not
eaten at Aman’s table, and that I have not greatly esteemed the king’s feast, nor
drunk the wine of the drink offerings.
The imperfect branches shall be broken off, their fruit unprofitable, not ripe to
eat,
yea, meet for nothing.
For thy
sustenance declared thy sweetness unto thy children, and serving to the
appetite of the
eater, tempered itself to every man’s liking.
Thou shalt
eat up thy leaves, and lose thy fruit, and leave
thyself as a dry tree.
Come unto her as one that ploweth and soweth, and wait for her good fruits: for thou shalt not
toil much in labouring about her, but thou shalt
eat of her fruits right soon.
And let just men eat and drink with thee; and let thy glorying be in the fear of the Lord.
Whereas he saith, I have found rest, and now will eat continually of my goods; and yet he knoweth not what time shall come upon him, and that he must leave those things to others, and die.
As the wild
ass is the lion’s prey in the wilderness: so the rich
eat up the poor.
The
fool saith, I have no friends, I have no
thank for all my good deeds, and they that
eat my bread speak evil of me.
They that
eat me shall yet be
hungry, and they that drink me shall yet be
thirsty.
What good doeth the offering unto an
idol? for neither can it
eat nor smell: so is he that is
persecuted of the Lord.
