But the king took the two sons of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom she bare unto Saul, Armoni and Mephibosheth; and the five sons of Michal the daughter of Saul, whom she brought up for Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite:
But the king took Armoni and Mephibosheth, the two sons whom Rizpah daughter of Aiah had borne to Saul, as well as the five sons whom Merab daughter of Saul had borne to Adriel son of Barzillai the Meholathite.
And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took
sackcloth, and spread it
for her upon the rock, from the beginning of harvest until water dropped upon them out of heaven, and suffered neither the birds of the air to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night.
And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took
sackcloth and spread it out
for herself on a rock. From the beginning of the harvest until the rain from heaven poured down on the bodies, she did not allow the birds of the air to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night.
And the bones of Saul and
Jonathan his son buried they in the country of Benjamin in Zelah, in the
sepulchre of
Kish his father: and they performed all that the king commanded. And after that God was intreated
for the land.
And they buried the bones of Saul and his son
Jonathan in Zela in the land of Benjamin, in the tomb of Saul’s father
Kish. After they had done everything the king had commanded, God answered their prayers
for the land.
And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;
He said: “The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer.
When the waves of death compassed me, the floods of ungodly men made me afraid;
In my distress I called upon the LORD, and
cried to my God: and he did hear my voice out of his temple, and my cry did enter into his ears.
In my distress I called upon the LORD; I
cried out to my God. And from His temple He heard my voice, and my cry
for help reached His ears.
There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, and fire out of his mouth
devoured: coals were
kindled by it.
Through the brightness before him were coals of fire
kindled.
From the brightness of His presence coals of fire
blazed forth.
He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them that
hated me:
for they were too strong
for me.
He
rescued me from my powerful enemy, from foes too mighty
for me.
He brought me forth also into a large place: he delivered me, because he delighted in me.
He brought me out into the open; He
rescued me because He delighted in me.
For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God.
For I have kept the ways of the LORD and have not wickedly departed from my God.
For all his judgments were before me: and as for his statutes, I did not depart from them.
For all His ordinances are before me; I have not disregarded His statutes.
For thou art my lamp, O LORD: and the LORD will
lighten my darkness.
For You, O LORD, are my lamp; the LORD lights up my darkness.
For by thee I have run through a
troop: by my God have I
leaped over a wall.
For in You I can charge an army; with my God I can scale a wall.
As
for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is tried: he is a
buckler to all them that trust in him.
As
for God, His way is perfect; the word of the LORD is
flawless. He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.
For who is God, save the LORD? and who is a rock, save our God?
For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God?
God is my strength and power: and he maketh my way perfect.
God is my strong fortress and He makes my way clear.
He teacheth my hands to war; so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms.
He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
For thou hast
girded me with strength to battle: them that rose up against me hast thou subdued under me.
You have armed me with strength for battle; You have subdued my foes beneath me.
Strangers shall submit themselves unto me: as soon as they hear, they shall be
obedient unto me.
Foreigners cower before me; when they hear me, they obey me.
Strangers shall
fade away, and they shall be afraid out of their close places.
Foreigners lose heart and come
trembling from their strongholds.
And that bringeth me forth from mine enemies: thou also hast lifted me up on high above them that rose up against me: thou hast delivered me from the violent man.
who frees me from my enemies. You
exalt me above my foes; You
rescue me from violent men.
He is the tower of salvation
for his king: and sheweth mercy to his
anointed, unto David, and to his seed
for evermore.
Great salvation He brings to His king. He shows loving devotion to His
anointed, to David and his descendants
forever.”
Although my house be not so with God; yet he hath made with me an
everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure:
for this is all my salvation, and all my desire, although he make it not to grow.
Is not my house right with God?
For He has established with me an
everlasting covenant, ordered and secured in every part. Will He not bring about my full salvation and my every desire?
But the sons of
Belial shall be all of them as thorns thrust away, because they cannot be taken with hands:
But the worthless are all like thorns
raked aside,
for they can never be gathered by hand.
And after him was
Eleazar the son of
Dodo the Ahohite, one of the three mighty men with David, when they
defied the Philistines that were there gathered together to battle, and the men of Israel were gone away:
Next in command was
Eleazar son of
Dodo the Ahohite. As one of the three mighty men, he went with David to
taunt the Philistines who had gathered
for battle at
Pas-dammim. The men of Israel retreated,
And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of
Bethlehem, which is by the gate!
David longed
for water and said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of
Bethlehem!”
For the king said to
Joab the captain of the host, which was with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israel, from
Dan even to Beer-
sheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the number of the people.
So the king said to
Joab the commander of his army, who was with him, “Go now throughout the tribes of Israel from
Dan to
Beersheba and register the troops, so that I may know their number.”
And came to the strong hold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the
Hivites, and of the
Canaanites: and they went out to the south of Judah, even to Beer-
sheba.
They went toward the
fortress of Tyre and all the cities of the
Hivites and
Canaanites. Finally, they went on to the Negev of Judah, to
Beersheba.
And David’s heart
smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto the LORD, I have
sinned greatly in that I have done: and now, I
beseech thee, O LORD, take away the iniquity of thy servant;
for I have done very
foolishly.
After David had numbered the troops, his conscience was
stricken and he said to the LORD, “I have
sinned greatly in what I have done. Now, O LORD, I
beg You to take away the iniquity of Your servant,
for I have acted very
foolishly.”
For when David was up in the morning, the word of the LORD came unto the prophet
Gad, David’s
seer, saying,
When David got up in the morning, a revelation from the LORD had come to
Gad the prophet, David’s
seer:
And David said unto
Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of the LORD;
for his
mercies are great: and let me not fall into the hand of man.
David answered
Gad, “I am deeply distressed. Please, let us fall into the hand of the LORD,
for His
mercies are great; but do not let me fall into the hands of men.”
And Araunah said unto David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what seemeth good unto him: behold, here be oxen
for burnt sacrifice, and
threshing instruments and other instruments of the oxen
for wood.
Araunah said to David, “My lord the king may take whatever seems good and offer it up. Here are the oxen
for a burnt offering and the
threshing sledges and ox yokes
for the wood.
And the king said unto Araunah,
Nay; but I will surely
buy it of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the LORD my God of that which
doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen
for fifty shekels of silver.
“No,” replied the king, “I
insist on paying a price,
for I will not offer to the LORD my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” So David bought the
threshing floor and the oxen
for fifty shekels of silver.
And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the LORD was intreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.
And there he built an altar to the LORD and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. Then the LORD answered the prayers on behalf of the land, and the plague upon Israel was
halted.
Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let there be sought
for my lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before the king, and let her
cherish him, and let her lie in thy
bosom, that my lord the king may get heat.
So his servants said to him, “Let us search for a young virgin for our lord the king, to attend to him and care for him and lie by his side to keep him warm.”
So they sought
for a fair
damsel throughout all the coasts of Israel, and found
Abishag a Shunammite, and brought her to the king.
Then they searched throughout Israel
for a beautiful
girl, and they found
Abishag the Shunammite and brought her to the king.
And the
damsel was very fair, and
cherished the king, and ministered to him: but the king knew her not.
The
girl was unsurpassed in beauty; she cared
for the king and served him, but he had no relations with her.
And thou, my lord, O king, the eyes of all Israel are upon thee, that thou shouldest tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.
And as for you, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are upon you to tell them who will sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.
For he is gone down this day, and hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the king’s sons, and the captains of the host, and
Abiathar the priest; and, behold, they eat and drink before him, and say, God save king Adonijah.
For today he has gone down and sacrificed an abundance of oxen,
fattened calves, and sheep, and has invited all the sons of the king, the commanders of the army, and
Abiathar the priest. And behold, they are eating and drinking before him, saying, ‘Long live King Adonijah!’
Then king David answered and said, Call me Bath-
sheba. And she came into the king’s presence, and stood before the king.
Then King David said, “Call in Bathsheba for me.” So she came into the king’s presence and stood before him.
Then Bath-
sheba bowed with her face to the earth, and did reverence to the king, and said, Let my lord king David live
for ever.
Bathsheba bowed facedown in
homage to the king and said, “May my lord King David live
forever!”
And king David said, Call me
Zadok the priest, and
Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada. And they came before the king.
Then King David said, “Call in
for me
Zadok the priest,
Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada.” So they came before the king.
Then ye shall come up after him, that he may come and sit upon my throne;
for he shall be king in my
stead: and I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and over Judah.
Then you shall go up with him, and he is to come and sit on my throne and reign in my place. For I have appointed him ruler over Israel and Judah.”
And while he yet spake, behold,
Jonathan the son of
Abiathar the priest came: and Adonijah said unto him, Come in;
for thou art a
valiant man, and bringest good
tidings.
As he was speaking, suddenly
Jonathan the son of
Abiathar the priest arrived. “Come in,” said Adonijah, “
for you are a man of
valor. You must be bringing good news.”
And it was told Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonijah feareth king Solomon:
for, lo, he hath caught hold on the horns of the altar, saying, Let king Solomon
swear unto me to day that he will not
slay his servant with the sword.
It was reported to Solomon: “Behold, Adonijah fears King Solomon, and he has taken hold of the horns of the altar, saying, ‘Let King Solomon first
swear to me not to put his servant to the sword.’”
Now the days of David drew
nigh that he should die; and he charged Solomon his son, saying,
As the time drew near for David to die, he charged his son Solomon,
But
shew kindness unto the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be of those that eat at thy table:
for so they came to me when I fled because of
Absalom thy brother.
But show loving devotion to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be among those who eat at your table, because they stood by me when I fled from your brother
Absalom.
Now therefore hold him not guiltless:
for thou art a wise man, and knowest what thou oughtest to do unto him; but his
hoar head bring thou down to the grave with blood.
Now therefore, do not hold him guiltless,
for you are a wise man. You know what you ought to do to him to bring his gray head down to
Sheol in blood.”
And the days that David reigned over Israel were
forty years: seven years reigned he in
Hebron, and thirty and three years reigned he in Jerusalem.
The length of David’s reign over Israel was
forty years—seven years in
Hebron and thirty-three years in Jerusalem.
And he said, Thou knowest that the kingdom was mine, and that all Israel set their faces on me, that I should reign:
howbeit the kingdom is turned about, and is become my brother’s:
for it was his from the LORD.
“You know that the
kingship was mine,” he said. “All Israel expected that I should reign, but the
kingship has turned to my brother,
for it has come to him from the LORD.
And he said, Speak, I pray thee, unto Solomon the king, (
for he will not say thee
nay,) that he give me
Abishag the Shunammite to wife.
Adonijah replied, “Please speak to King Solomon, since he will not turn you down. Let him give me
Abishag the Shunammite as my wife.”
And Bath-
sheba said, Well; I will speak
for thee unto the king.
“Very well,” Bathsheba replied. “I will speak to the king for you.”
Bath-
sheba therefore went unto king Solomon, to speak unto him
for Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her, and bowed himself unto her, and sat down on his throne, and caused a seat to be set
for the king’s mother; and she sat on his right hand.
So Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak to him
for Adonijah. The king stood up to
greet her, bowed to her, and sat down on his throne. Then the king had a throne brought
for his mother, who sat down at his right hand.
Then she said, I desire one small petition of thee; I pray thee, say me not
nay. And the king said unto her, Ask on, my mother:
for I will not say thee
nay.
“I have just one small request of you,” she said. “Do not deny me.” “Make your request, my mother,” the king replied, “for I will not deny you.”
And king Solomon answered and said unto his mother, And why
dost thou ask
Abishag the Shunammite
for Adonijah? ask
for him the kingdom also;
for he is mine elder brother; even
for him, and
for Abiathar the priest, and
for Joab the son of Zeruiah.
King Solomon answered his mother, “Why do you request
Abishag the Shunammite
for Adonijah? Since he is my older brother, you might as well request the kingdom
for him and
for Abiathar the priest and
for Joab son of Zeruiah!”
Now therefore, as the LORD liveth, which hath established me, and set me on the throne of David my father, and who hath made me an house, as he promised, Adonijah shall be put to death this day.
And now, as surely as the LORD lives—the One who established me, who set me on the throne of my father David, and who founded
for me a dynasty as He promised—surely Adonijah shall be put to death
today!”
And unto
Abiathar the priest said the king, Get thee to Anathoth, unto thine own fields;
for thou art worthy of death: but I will not at this time put thee to death, because thou barest the ark of the Lord GOD before David my father, and because thou hast been
afflicted in all wherein my father was
afflicted.
Then the king said to
Abiathar the priest, “Go back to your fields in Anathoth. Even though you deserve to die, I will not put you to death at this time, since you carried the ark of the Lord GOD before my father David, and you suffered through all that my father suffered.”
Then
tidings came to
Joab:
for Joab had turned after Adonijah, though he turned not after
Absalom. And
Joab fled unto the tabernacle of the LORD, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.
When the news reached
Joab, who had
conspired with Adonijah but not with
Absalom, he fled to the tent of the LORD and took hold of the horns of the altar.
And Benaiah came to the tabernacle of the LORD, and said unto him, Thus saith the king, Come
forth. And he said,
Nay; but I will die here. And Benaiah brought the king word again, saying, Thus said
Joab, and thus he answered me.
And Benaiah entered the tent of the LORD and said to
Joab, “The king says, ‘Come out!’” But
Joab replied, “No, I will die here.” So Benaiah relayed the message to the king, saying, “This is how
Joab answered me.”
And the LORD shall return his blood upon his own head, who fell upon two men more righteous and better than he, and
slew them with the sword, my father David not knowing thereof, to wit,
Abner the son of
Ner, captain of the host of Israel, and
Amasa the son of Jether, captain of the host of Judah.
The LORD will bring his
bloodshed back upon his own head,
for without the knowledge of my father David he struck down two men more righteous and better than he when he put to the sword
Abner son of
Ner, commander of Israel’s army, and
Amasa son of Jether, commander of Judah’s army.
Their blood shall therefore return upon the head of
Joab, and upon the head of his seed
for ever: but upon David, and upon his seed, and upon his house, and upon his throne, shall there be peace
for ever from the LORD.
Their blood will come back upon the heads of
Joab and his descendants
forever; but
for David, his descendants, his house, and his throne, there shall be peace from the LORD
forever.”
And the king sent and called
for Shimei, and said unto him, Build thee an house in Jerusalem, and dwell there, and go not
forth thence any
whither.
Then the king summoned Shimei and said to him, “Build a house
for yourself in Jerusalem and live there, but do not go
anywhere else.
For it shall be, that on the day thou goest out, and passest over the
brook Kidron, thou shalt know
for certain that thou shalt surely die: thy blood shall be upon thine own head.
On the day you go out and cross the Kidron Valley, know for sure that you will die; your blood will be on your own head.”
And Shimei said unto the king, The saying is good: as my lord the king hath said, so will thy servant do. And Shimei dwelt in Jerusalem many days.
“The sentence is fair,” Shimei replied. “Your servant will do as my lord the king has spoken.” And Shimei lived in Jerusalem for a long time.
And the king sent and called
for Shimei, and said unto him, Did I not make thee to
swear by the LORD, and
protested unto thee, saying, Know
for a certain, on the day thou goest out, and walkest abroad any
whither, that thou shalt surely die? and thou saidst unto me, The word that I have heard is good.
the king summoned Shimei and said to him, “Did I not make you
swear by the LORD and
warn you, ‘On the day you leave and go elsewhere, know
for sure that you will die’? And you told me, ‘The sentence is fair; I will
comply.’
And king Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before the LORD for ever.
But King Solomon will be blessed and David’s throne will remain secure before the LORD
forever.”
And Solomon made affinity with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh’s daughter, and brought her into the city of David, until he had made an end of building his own house, and the house of the LORD, and the wall of Jerusalem round about.
Later, Solomon formed an alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt by marrying his daughter. Solomon brought her to the City of David until he had finished building his palace and the house of the LORD, as well as the wall around Jerusalem.
Only the people sacrificed in high places, because there was no house built unto the name of the LORD, until those days.
The people, however, were still sacrificing on the high places because a house for the Name of the LORD had not yet been built.
And the king went to
Gibeon to sacrifice there;
for that was the great high place: a thousand burnt offerings did Solomon offer upon that altar.
Now the king went to
Gibeon to sacrifice there,
for it was the great high place. Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on the altar there.
And Solomon said, Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.
Solomon replied, “You have shown much loving devotion to Your servant, my father David, because he walked before You in faithfulness, righteousness, and uprightness of heart. And You have maintained this loving devotion by giving him a son to sit on his throne this very day.
And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude.
Your servant is here among the people You have chosen, a people too numerous to count or number.
Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may
discern between good and bad:
for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?
Therefore give Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people and to
discern between good and evil.
For who is able to
govern this great people of Yours?”
And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked
for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches
for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked
for thyself understanding to
discern judgment;
So God said to him, “Since you have asked
for this instead of requesting long life or wealth
for yourself or death
for your enemies—but you have asked
for discernment to
administer justice—
And Solomon
awoke; and, behold, it was a dream. And he came to Jerusalem, and stood before the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and offered up burnt offerings, and offered peace offerings, and made a feast to all his servants.
Then Solomon
awoke, and indeed it had been a dream. So he returned to Jerusalem, stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. Then he held a feast
for all his servants.
Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king,
for her
bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise
slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it.
Then the woman whose son was alive spoke to the king because she
yearned with
compassion for her son. “Please, my lord,” she said, “give her the living
baby. Do not kill him!” But the other woman said, “He will be neither mine nor yours. Cut him in two!”
And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do judgment.
When all Israel heard of the judgment the king had given, they stood in
awe of him,
for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him to
administer justice.
And Ahishar was over the household: and Adoniram the son of Abda was over the tribute.
Ahishar was in charge of the palace; and Adoniram son of Abda was in charge of the forced labor.
And Solomon had twelve officers over all Israel, which provided
victuals for the king and his household: each man his month in a year made provision.
Solomon had twelve governors over all Israel to provide food for the king and his household. Each one would arrange provisions for one month of the year,
And Solomon’s provision
for one day was thirty measures of fine flour, and
threescore measures of meal,
Solomon’s provisions for a single day were thirty cors of fine flour, sixty cors of meal,
For he had dominion over all the region on this side the river, from Tiphsah even to Azzah, over all the kings on this side the river: and he had peace on all sides round about him.
For Solomon had dominion over everything west of the Euphrates—over all the kingdoms from Tiphsah to
Gaza—and he had peace on all sides.
And Solomon had
forty thousand stalls of horses
for his
chariots, and twelve thousand
horsemen.
Solomon had 4,000 stalls
for his
chariot horses and 12,000 horses.
And those officers provided
victual for king Solomon, and
for all that came unto king Solomon’s table, every man in his month: they lacked nothing.
Each month the governors in turn provided food for King Solomon and all who came to his table. They saw to it that nothing was lacking.
Barley also and straw
for the horses and
dromedaries brought they unto the place where the officers were, every man according to his charge.
Each one also brought to the required place their quotas of barley and straw
for the
chariot horses and other horses.
For he was wiser than all men; than
Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, and Chalcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol: and his fame was in all nations round about.
He was wiser than all men—wiser than
Ethan the Ezrahite, and wiser than Heman, Calcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol. And his fame spread throughout the surrounding nations.
And
Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants unto Solomon;
for he had heard that they had
anointed him king in the room of his father:
for Hiram was ever a lover of David.
Now when
Hiram king of Tyre heard that Solomon had been
anointed king in his father’s place, he sent envoys to Solomon;
for Hiram had always been a friend of David.
Thou knowest how that David my father could not build an house unto the name of the LORD his God for the wars which were about him on every side, until the LORD put them under the soles of his feet.
“As you are well aware, due to the wars
waged on all sides against my father David, he could not build a house
for the Name of the LORD his God until the LORD had put his enemies under his feet.
And, behold, I purpose to build an house unto the name of the LORD my God, as the LORD spake unto David my father, saying, Thy son, whom I will set upon thy throne in thy room, he shall build an house unto my name.
So behold, I plan to build a house for the Name of the LORD my God, according to what the LORD said to my father David: ‘I will put your son on your throne in your place, and he will build the house for My Name.’
Now therefore command thou that they
hew me
cedar trees out of
Lebanon; and my servants shall be with thy servants: and unto thee will I give
hire for thy servants according to all that thou shalt
appoint:
for thou knowest that there is not among us any that can skill to
hew timber like unto the Sidonians.
Now therefore, order that cedars of
Lebanon be cut down
for me. My servants will be with your servants, and I will pay your servants whatever wages you set,
for you know that there are none among us as skilled in
logging as the Sidonians.”
And
Hiram sent to Solomon, saying, I have considered the things which thou sentest to me
for: and I will do all thy desire concerning timber of
cedar, and concerning timber of
fir.
Then
Hiram sent a reply to Solomon, saying: “I have received your message; I will do all you desire regarding the
cedar and
cypress timber.
My servants shall bring them down from
Lebanon unto the sea: and I will convey them by sea in floats unto the place that thou shalt
appoint me, and will cause them to be discharged there, and thou shalt receive them: and thou shalt
accomplish my desire, in giving food
for my household.
My servants will
haul the logs from
Lebanon to the Sea, and I will
float them as rafts by sea to the place you
specify. There I will separate the logs, and you can take them away. And in exchange, you can meet my needs by providing my household with food.”
And Solomon gave
Hiram twenty thousand measures of wheat
for food to his household, and twenty measures of pure oil: thus gave Solomon to
Hiram year by year.
and year after year Solomon would provide
Hiram with 20,000 cors of wheat as food
for his household, as well as 20,000 baths of pure olive oil.
And king Solomon raised a
levy out of all Israel; and the
levy was thirty thousand men.
Then King Solomon conscripted a labor force of 30,000 men from all Israel.
And he sent them to
Lebanon ten thousand a month by courses: a month they were in
Lebanon, and two months at home: and Adoniram was over the
levy.
He sent them to
Lebanon in monthly shifts of 10,000 men, so that they would
spend one month in
Lebanon and two months at home. And Adoniram was in charge of the
forced labor.
Beside the chief of Solomon’s officers which were over the work, three thousand and three hundred, which ruled over the people that wrought in the work.
And Solomon’s builders and
Hiram’s builders did
hew them, and the stonesquarers: so they prepared timber and stones to build the house.
So Solomon’s and
Hiram’s builders, along with the Gebalites,
quarried the stone and prepared the timber and stone
for the construction of the temple.
And the house which king Solomon built
for the LORD, the length thereof was
threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof twenty cubits, and the height thereof thirty cubits.
The house that King Solomon built for the LORD was sixty cubits long, twenty cubits wide, and thirty cubits high.
And for the house he made windows of narrow lights.
He also had narrow windows framed high in the temple.
The
nethermost chamber was five cubits broad, and the middle was six cubits broad, and the third was seven cubits broad:
for without in the wall of the house he made narrowed rests round about, that the beams should not be fastened in the walls of the house.
The bottom floor was five cubits wide, the middle floor six cubits, and the third floor seven cubits. He also placed
offset ledges around the outside of the temple, so that nothing would be inserted into its walls.
The door for the middle chamber was in the right side of the house: and they went up with winding stairs into the middle chamber, and out of the middle into the third.
The entrance to the bottom floor was on the south side of the temple. A
stairway led up to the middle level, and from there to the third floor.
