And a
chariot came up and went out of Egypt for six hundred shekels of silver, and an horse for an hundred and fifty: and so for all the kings of the
Hittites, and for the kings of Syria, did they bring them out by their means.
A
chariot could be imported
from Egypt for six hundred shekels of silver, and a horse for a hundred and fifty. Likewise, they exported them to all the kings of the
Hittites and to the kings of
Aram.
Of the nations concerning which the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon
clave unto these in love.
These women were
from the nations about which the LORD had told the Israelites, “You must not
intermarry with them, for surely they will turn your hearts after their gods.” Yet Solomon
clung to these women in love.
And the LORD was
angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned
from the LORD God of Israel, which had appeared unto him twice,
Now the LORD grew
angry with Solomon, because his heart had turned away
from the LORD, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice.
Wherefore the LORD said unto Solomon,
Forasmuch as this is done of thee, and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded thee, I will surely
rend the kingdom
from thee, and will give it to thy servant.
Then the LORD said to Solomon, “Because you have done this and have not kept My covenant and My statutes, which I have commanded you, I will
tear the kingdom away
from you and give it to your servant.
Howbeit I will not
rend away all the kingdom; but will give one tribe to thy son for David my servant’s sake, and for Jerusalem’s sake which I have chosen.
Yet I will not
tear the whole kingdom away
from him. I will give one tribe to your son for the sake of My servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, which I have chosen.”
And they arose out of
Midian, and came to
Paran: and they took men with them out of
Paran, and they came to Egypt, unto Pharaoh king of Egypt; which gave him an house, and appointed him
victuals, and gave him land.
Hadad and his men set out
from Midian and went to
Paran. They took men
from Paran with them and went to Egypt, to Pharaoh king of Egypt, who gave
Hadad a house and land and provided him with food.
And God
stirred him up another
adversary, Rezon the son of Eliadah, which fled
from his lord Hadadezer king of Zobah:
And God raised up against Solomon another
adversary, Rezon the son of Eliada, who had fled
from his master, Hadadezer king of Zobah,
And
Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephrathite of Zereda, Solomon’s servant, whose mother’s name was Zeruah, a widow woman, even he lifted up his hand against the king.
Now
Jeroboam son of Nebat was an Ephraimite
from Zeredah whose mother was a widow named Zeruah.
Jeroboam was a servant of Solomon, but he rebelled against the king,
But I will take the kingdom out of his son’s hand, and will give it unto thee, even ten tribes.
But I will take ten tribes of the kingdom from the hand of his son and give them to you.
And it came to pass, when
Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he was fled
from the presence of king Solomon, and
Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;)
When
Jeroboam son of Nebat heard about this, he was still in Egypt where he had fled
from King Solomon and had been living ever since.
Wherefore the king
hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was
from the LORD, that he might perform his saying, which the LORD spake by
Ahijah the Shilonite unto
Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
So the king did not
listen to the people, and indeed this turn of events was
from the LORD, to
fulfill the word He had spoken to
Jeroboam son of Nebat through
Ahijah the Shilonite.
Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is
from me. They
hearkened therefore to the word of the LORD, and returned to depart, according to the word of the LORD.
that this is what the LORD says: ‘You are not to go up and fight against your brothers, the Israelites. Each of you must return home, for this word is
from Me.’” So they
listened to the word of the LORD and turned back according to the word of the LORD.
Then
Jeroboam built
Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt therein; and went out
from thence, and built Penuel.
Then
Jeroboam built
Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim and lived there. And
from there he went out and built Penuel.
And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi.
Jeroboam also built shrines on the high places and appointed
from every class of people priests who were not Levites.
And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the LORD unto
Bethel: and
Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense.
Suddenly, as
Jeroboam was standing beside the altar to burn incense, there came a man of God
from Judah to
Bethel by the word of the LORD.
And it came to pass, when king
Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had
cried against the altar in
Bethel, that he put forth his hand
from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him.
Now when King
Jeroboam, who was at the altar in
Bethel, heard the word that the man of God had
cried out against it, he stretched out his hand and said, “Seize him!” But the hand he stretched out toward him
withered, so that he could not pull it back.
The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the LORD.
And the altar was split apart, and the ashes poured out, according to the sign that the man of God had given by the word of the LORD.
And their father said unto them, What way went he? For his sons had seen what way the man of God went, which came from Judah.
“Which way did he go?” their father asked. And his sons showed him the way taken by the man of God, who had come from Judah.
And went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak: and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am.
and went after the man of God. He found him sitting under an oak tree and asked, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?” “I am,” he replied.
And he
cried unto the man of God that came
from Judah, saying, Thus saith the LORD,
Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the LORD, and hast not kept the commandment which the LORD thy God commanded thee,
and the prophet
cried out to the man of God who had come
from Judah, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Because you have
defied the word of the LORD and have not kept the commandment that the LORD your God gave you,
And when the prophet that brought him back
from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was
disobedient unto the word of the LORD: therefore the LORD hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath
torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake unto him.
When the prophet who had brought him back
from his journey heard this, he said, “It is the man of God who disobeyed the command of the LORD. Therefore the LORD has delivered him to the lion, and it has
mauled him and killed him, according to the word that the LORD had spoken to him.”
After this thing
Jeroboam returned not
from his evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people priests of the high places:
whosoever would, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places.
Even after these events,
Jeroboam did not
repent of his evil ways, but again he appointed priests for the high places
from every class of people. He ordained
anyone who desired to be a priest of the high places.
And this thing became sin unto the house of
Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it
from off the face of the earth.
And this was the sin of the house of
Jeroboam that led to its
extermination and destruction
from the face of the earth.
Go, tell
Jeroboam, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel,
Forasmuch as I
exalted thee
from among the people, and made thee prince over my people Israel,
Go, tell
Jeroboam that this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I raised you up
from among the people and appointed you ruler over My people Israel.
And rent the kingdom away from the house of David, and gave it thee: and yet thou hast not been as my servant David, who kept my commandments, and who followed me with all his heart, to do that only which was right in mine eyes;
I
tore the kingdom away
from the house of David and gave it to you. But you were not like My servant David, who kept My commandments and followed Me with all his heart, doing only what was right in My eyes.
Therefore, behold, I will bring evil upon the house of
Jeroboam, and will cut off
from Jeroboam him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel, and will take away the
remnant of the house of
Jeroboam, as a man taketh away dung, till it be all gone.
Because of all this, behold, I am bringing
disaster on the house of
Jeroboam: I will cut off
from Jeroboam every male, both slave and free, in Israel; I will burn up the house of
Jeroboam as one burns up dung until it is gone!
For the LORD shall
smite Israel, as a reed is
shaken in the water, and he shall root up Israel out of this good land, which he gave to their fathers, and shall
scatter them beyond the river, because they have made their groves,
provoking the LORD to anger.
For the LORD will strike Israel as a reed is
shaken in the water. He will
uproot Israel
from this good land that He gave their fathers, and He will
scatter them beyond the Euphrates, because they have made their Asherah poles,
provoking the LORD to anger.
And
Rehoboam the son of Solomon reigned in Judah.
Rehoboam was forty and one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the LORD did choose out of all the tribes of Israel, to put his name there. And his mother’s name was Naamah an Ammonitess.
Meanwhile,
Rehoboam son of Solomon reigned in Judah. He was forty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city the LORD had chosen
from all the tribes of Israel in which to put His Name. His mother’s name was Naamah the
Ammonite.
Because David did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, and turned not aside from any thing that he commanded him all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.
For David had done what was right in the eyes of the LORD and had not turned aside from anything the LORD commanded all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.
And he took away the sodomites out of the land, and removed all the idols that his fathers had made.
He banished the male
shrine prostitutes
from the land and removed all the idols that his fathers had made.
And also Maachah his mother, even her he removed
from being queen, because she had made an
idol in a
grove; and
Asa destroyed her
idol, and burnt it by the
brook Kidron.
And
Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah, and built
Ramah, that he might not suffer any to go out or come in to
Asa king of Judah.
Baasha king of Israel went to war against Judah and fortified
Ramah to prevent
anyone from leaving or entering the territory of
Asa king of Judah.
There is a league between me and thee, and between my father and thy father: behold, I have sent unto thee a present of silver and gold; come and break thy league with
Baasha king of Israel, that he may depart
from me.
“Let there be a treaty between me and you, between my father and your father. See, I have sent you a gift of silver and gold. Now go and break your treaty with
Baasha king of Israel, so that he will withdraw
from me.”
And Omri went up from Gibbethon, and all Israel with him, and they besieged Tirzah.
Then Omri and all the Israelites marched up from Gibbethon and besieged Tirzah.
And he bought the hill Samaria of Shemer for two talents of silver, and built on the hill, and called the name of the city which he built, after the name of Shemer, owner of the hill, Samaria.
He bought the hill of Samaria from Shemer for two talents of silver and built a city there, calling it Samaria after the name of Shemer, who had owned the hill.
And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,
Then a revelation
from the LORD came to
Elijah:
And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the
brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.
And you are to drink
from the
brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.”
And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he
drank of the
brook.
The ravens would bring him bread and meat in the morning and evening, and he would drink
from the
brook.
And
Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little
cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.
“Do not be afraid,”
Elijah said to her. “Go and do as you have said. But first make me a small
cake of bread
from what you have, and bring it out to me. Afterward, make some for
yourself and your son,
And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her
bosom, and carried him up into a
loft, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed.
But
Elijah said to her, “Give me your son.” So he took him
from her arms, carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his own bed.
And
Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother: and
Elijah said, See, thy son liveth.
Then
Elijah took the child, brought him down
from the upper room into the house, and gave him to his mother. “Look, your son is alive,”
Elijah declared.
And the woman said to
Elijah, Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in thy mouth is truth.
Then the woman said to
Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the LORD
from your mouth is truth.”
And it shall come to pass, as soon as I am gone
from thee, that the Spirit of the LORD shall carry thee
whither I know not; and so when I come and tell
Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he shall
slay me: but I thy servant fear the LORD
from my youth.
I do not know where the Spirit of the LORD may carry you off when I leave you. Then when I go and tell
Ahab and he does not find you, he will kill me. But I, your servant, have feared the LORD
from my youth.
And they took the
bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of
Baal from morning even until
noon, saying, O
Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they
leaped upon the altar which was made.
And they took the bull that was given them, prepared it, and called on the name of
Baal from morning until
noon,
shouting, “O
Baal, answer us!” But there was no sound, and no one answered as they
leaped around the altar they had made.
And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man’s hand. And he said, Go up, say unto
Ahab, Prepare thy
chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not.
On the seventh time the servant reported, “There is a cloud as small as a man’s hand rising
from the sea.” And
Elijah replied, “Go and tell
Ahab, ‘Prepare your
chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’”
And
Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou
anoint to be king over Israel: and
Elisha the son of Shaphat of
Abel-meholah shalt thou
anoint to be prophet in thy room.
You are also to
anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Israel and
Elisha son of Shaphat
from Abel-meholah to succeed you as prophet.
And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth the sword of
Hazael shall
Jehu slay: and him that escapeth
from the sword of
Jehu shall
Elisha slay.
And he returned back
from him, and took a yoke of oxen, and
slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and went after
Elijah, and ministered unto him.
So
Elisha turned back
from him, took his pair of oxen, and slaughtered them. With the oxen’s
equipment, he
cooked the meat and gave it to the people, and they
ate. Then he set out to follow and serve
Elijah.
And do this thing, Take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put captains in their rooms:
So do this: Dismiss all the kings from their positions and replace them with other officers.
Now the men did
diligently observe whether any thing would come
from him, and did
hastily catch it: and they said, Thy brother Ben-
hadad. Then he said, Go ye, bring him. Then Ben-
hadad came forth to him; and he caused him to come up into the
chariot.
Now the men were looking for a sign of hope, and they quickly
grasped at this word and replied, “
Yes, your brother Ben-
hadad.” “Go and get him!” said the king. Then Ben-
hadad came out, and
Ahab had him come up into his
chariot.
And Ben-
hadad said unto him, The cities, which my father took
from thy father, I will restore; and thou shalt make streets for thee in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria. Then said
Ahab, I will send thee away with this covenant. So he made a covenant with him, and sent him away.
Ben-
hadad said to him, “I will restore the cities my father took
from your father; you may set up your own marketplaces in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria.” “By this treaty I release you,”
Ahab replied. So he made a treaty with him and sent him away.
Then said he unto him, Because thou hast not obeyed the voice of the LORD, behold, as soon as thou art departed
from me, a lion shall
slay thee. And as soon as he was departed
from him, a lion found him, and
slew him.
Then the prophet said to him, “Because you have not obeyed the voice of the LORD, as soon as you depart from me a lion will kill you.” And when he left, a lion found him and killed him.
And he hasted, and took the ashes away
from his face; and the king of Israel
discerned him that he was of the prophets.
Then the prophet quickly removed the
bandage from his eyes, and the king of Israel recognized him as one of the prophets.
And he said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Because thou hast let go out of thy hand a man whom I appointed to utter destruction, therefore thy life shall go for his life, and thy people for his people.
And the prophet said to the king, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Because you have let slip from your hand the man I had devoted to destruction, your life will be exchanged for his life, and your people for his people.’”
Behold, I will bring evil upon thee, and will take away thy
posterity, and will cut off
from Ahab him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel,
This is what the LORD says: ‘I will bring
calamity on you and
consume your descendants; I will cut off
from Ahab every male in Israel, both slave and free.
And the king of Israel said unto his servants, Know ye that
Ramoth in
Gilead is ours, and we be still, and take it not out of the hand of the king of Syria?
who said to his servants, “Do you not know that
Ramoth-
gilead is ours, but we have failed to take it
from the hand of the king of
Aram?”
But
Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah went near, and
smote Micaiah on the
cheek, and said, Which way went the Spirit of the LORD
from me to speak unto thee?
Then
Zedekiah son of Chenaanah went up, struck Micaiah in the face, and demanded, “Which way did the Spirit of the LORD go when He departed
from me to speak with you?”
And it came to pass, when the captains of the
chariots perceived that it was not the king of Israel, that they turned back
from pursuing him.
And when the
chariot commanders saw that he was not the king of Israel, they turned back
from pursuing him.
And the battle increased that day: and the king was stayed up in his
chariot against the Syrians, and died at even: and the blood ran out of the wound into the midst of the
chariot.
The battle
raged throughout that day, and the king was
propped up in his
chariot facing the Arameans. And the blood
from his wound ran out
onto the floor of the
chariot, and that evening he died.
And he walked in all the ways of
Asa his father; he turned not aside
from it, doing that which was right in the eyes of the LORD: nevertheless the high places were not taken away; for the people offered and burnt incense yet in the high places.
And
Jehoshaphat walked in all the ways of his father
Asa; he did not turn away
from them, but did what was right in the eyes of the LORD. The high places, however, were not removed; the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places.
And the
remnant of the sodomites, which remained in the days of his father
Asa, he took out of the land.
He banished
from the land the male
shrine prostitutes who remained
from the days of his father
Asa.
And
Ahaziah fell down through a
lattice in his upper chamber that was in Samaria, and was sick: and he sent messengers, and said unto them, Go,
enquire of
Baal-
zebub the god of
Ekron whether I shall recover of this disease.
Now
Ahaziah had fallen through the
lattice of his upper room in Samaria and injured himself. So he sent messengers and
instructed them: “Go inquire of
Baal-
zebub, the god of
Ekron, whether I will recover
from this injury.”
Now therefore thus saith the LORD, Thou shalt not come down
from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die. And
Elijah departed.
Therefore this is what the LORD says: ‘You will not get up
from the bed on which you are lying. You will surely die.’” So
Elijah departed.
And they said unto him, There came a man up to meet us, and said unto us, Go, turn again unto the king that sent you, and say unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Is it not because there is not a God in Israel, that thou sendest to
enquire of
Baal-
zebub the god of
Ekron? therefore thou shalt not come down
from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.
They replied, “A man came up to meet us and said, ‘Go back to the king who sent you and tell him that this is what the LORD says: Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending these men to inquire of
Baal-
zebub, the god of
Ekron? Therefore you will not get up
from the bed on which you are lying. You will surely die.’”
And
Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, If I be a man of God, then let fire come down
from heaven, and
consume thee and thy fifty. And there came down fire
from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.
Elijah answered the captain, “If I am a man of God, may fire come down
from heaven and
consume you and your fifty men.” And fire came down
from heaven and consumed the captain and his fifty men.
And
Elijah answered and said unto them, If I be a man of God, let fire come down
from heaven, and
consume thee and thy fifty. And the fire of God came down
from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.
Again
Elijah replied, “If I am a man of God, may fire come down
from heaven and
consume you and your fifty men.” And the fire of God came down
from heaven and consumed the captain and his fifty men.
Behold, there came fire down
from heaven, and burnt up the two captains of the former
fifties with their
fifties: therefore let my life now be precious in thy sight.
Behold, fire has come down from heaven and consumed the first two captains of fifty, with all their men. But now may my life be precious in your sight.”
And he said unto him, Thus saith the LORD,
Forasmuch as thou hast sent messengers to
enquire of
Baal-
zebub the god of
Ekron, is it not because there is no God in Israel to
enquire of his word? therefore thou shalt not come down off that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.
And
Elijah said to King
Ahaziah, “This is what the LORD says: Is there really no God in Israel for you to inquire of His word? Is that why you have sent messengers to inquire of
Baal-
zebub, the god of
Ekron? Therefore you will not get up
from the bed on which you are lying. You will surely die.”
And the sons of the prophets that were at
Bethel came forth to
Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master
from thy head to day? And he said,
Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace.
Then the sons of the prophets at
Bethel came out to
Elisha and said, “Do you know that the LORD will take your master away
from you
today?” “
Yes, I know,” he replied. “Do not speak of it.”
And the sons of the prophets that were at
Jericho came to
Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master
from thy head to day? And he answered,
Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace.
Then the sons of the prophets at
Jericho came up to
Elisha and said, “Do you know that the LORD will take your master away
from you
today?” “
Yes, I know,” he replied. “Do not speak of it.”
And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that
Elijah said unto
Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away
from thee. And
Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.
After they had crossed over,
Elijah said to
Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken away
from you?” “Please, let me
inherit a double portion of your spirit,”
Elisha replied.
And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.
“You have requested a difficult thing,” said
Elijah. “Nevertheless, if you see me as I am taken
from you, it will be yours. But if not, then it will not be so.”
He took up also the
mantle of
Elijah that fell
from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan;
And he took the
mantle of
Elijah that fell
from him, and
smote the waters, and said, Where is the LORD God of
Elijah? and when he also had
smitten the waters, they parted
hither and thither: and
Elisha went over.
Then he took the
cloak of
Elijah that had fallen
from him and struck the waters. “Where now is the LORD, the God of
Elijah?” he asked. And when he had struck the waters, they parted to the right and to the left, and
Elisha crossed over.
And when the sons of the prophets which were to view at
Jericho saw him, they said, The spirit of
Elijah doth rest on
Elisha. And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him.
When the sons of the prophets who were facing him
from Jericho saw what had happened, they said, “The spirit of
Elijah rests on
Elisha.” And they went to meet him and bowed down to the ground before him.
And he went forth unto the spring of the waters, and cast the salt in there, and said, Thus saith the LORD, I have
healed these waters; there shall not be
from thence any more death or barren land.
and
Elisha went out to the spring, cast the salt into it, and said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘I have
healed this water. No longer will it cause death or unfruitfulness.’”
And he went up
from thence unto
Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and
mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou
bald head; go up, thou
bald head.
And he went
from thence to mount
Carmel, and
from thence he returned to Samaria.
And
Elisha went on to Mount
Carmel, and
from there he returned to Samaria.
Nevertheless he
cleaved unto the sins of
Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel to sin; he departed not
therefrom.
Nevertheless, he
clung to the sins that
Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit; he did not turn away
from them.
And king Jehoram went out of Samaria the same time, and numbered all Israel.
So at that time King Jehoram set out
from Samaria and
mobilized all Israel.
And it came to pass in the morning, when the meat offering was offered, that, behold, there came water by the way of
Edom, and the country was filled with water.
The next morning, at the time of the morning sacrifice, water suddenly flowed
from the direction of
Edom and filled the land.
Then he took his eldest son that should have reigned in his
stead, and offered him for a burnt offering upon the wall. And there was great
indignation against Israel: and they departed
from him, and returned to their own land.
So he took his
firstborn son, who was to succeed him, and offered him as a burnt offering on the city wall. And there was great
fury against the Israelites, so they withdrew and returned to their own land.
Then he said, Go,
borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbours, even empty vessels;
borrow not a few.
“Go,” said
Elisha, “
borrow jars, even empty ones,
from all your neighbors. Do not gather just a few.
So she went from him, and shut the door upon her and upon her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured out.
So she left him, and after she had shut the door behind her and her sons, they kept bringing jars to her, and she kept pouring.
And when she came to the man of God to the hill, she caught him by the feet: but Gehazi came near to thrust her away. And the man of God said, Let her alone; for her soul is
vexed within her: and the LORD hath
hid it
from me, and hath not told me.
When she reached the man of God at the mountain, she
clung to his feet. Gehazi came over to
push her away, but the man of God said, “Leave her alone, for her soul is in deep distress, and the LORD has hidden it
from me and has not told me.”
Then he returned, and walked in the house to and
fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child
sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.
Elisha turned away and
paced back and forth across the room. Then he got on the bed and stretched himself out over the boy again, and the boy
sneezed seven times and opened his eyes.
And one went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, and gathered thereof wild gourds his
lap full, and came and
shred them into the pot of
pottage: for they knew them not.
One of them went out to the field to gather herbs, and he found a wild vine
from which he gathered as many wild gourds as his garment could hold. Then he came back and cut them up into the pot of
stew, though no one knew what they were.
And there came a man
from Baal-shalisha, and brought the man of God bread of the firstfruits, twenty
loaves of barley, and full ears of corn in the
husk thereof. And he said, Give unto the people, that they may eat.
Now a man
from Baal-shalishah came to the man of God with a
sack of twenty
loaves of barley bread
from the first ripe grain. “Give it to the people to eat,” said
Elisha.
And the Syrians had gone out by companies, and had brought away
captive out of the land of Israel a little
maid; and she waited on
Naaman’s wife.
At this time the Arameans had gone out in bands and had taken a young
girl from the land of Israel, and she was serving
Naaman’s wife.
And one went in, and told his lord, saying, Thus and thus said the
maid that is of the land of Israel.
And
Naaman went and told his master what the
girl from the land of Israel had said.
And he returned to the man of God, he and all his company, and came, and stood before him: and he said, Behold, now I know that there is no God in all earth, but in Israel: now therefore, I pray thee, take a blessing of thy servant.
Then
Naaman and all his attendants went back to the man of God, stood before him, and declared, “Now I know for sure that there is no God in all the earth except in Israel. So please accept a gift
from your servant.”
And he said unto him, Go in peace. So he departed from him a little way.
“Go in peace,” said
Elisha. But after
Naaman had traveled a short distance,
But Gehazi, the servant of
Elisha the man of God, said, Behold, my master hath
spared Naaman this
Syrian, in not receiving at his hands that which he brought: but, as the LORD liveth, I will run after him, and take somewhat of him.
Gehazi, the servant of
Elisha the man of God, said, “Look, my master has
spared this
Aramean,
Naaman, while not accepting what he brought. As surely as the LORD lives, I will run after him and get something
from him.”
So Gehazi followed after
Naaman. And when
Naaman saw him running after him, he lighted down
from the
chariot to meet him, and said, Is all well?
So Gehazi pursued
Naaman. And when
Naaman saw him running toward him, he got down
from the
chariot to meet him and asked, “Is everything all right?”
And he said, All is well. My master hath sent me, saying, Behold, even now there be come to me from mount Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets: give them, I pray thee, a talent of silver, and two changes of garments.
“Everything is all right,” Gehazi replied. “My master has sent me to say, ‘I have just now discovered that two young men from the sons of the prophets have come to me from the hill country of Ephraim. Please give them a talent of silver and two sets of clothing.’”
And when he came to the tower, he took them from their hand, and bestowed them in the house: and he let the men go, and they departed.
When Gehazi came to the hill, he took the gifts from the servants and stored them in the house. Then he dismissed the men, and they departed.
And he said unto him, Went not mine heart with thee, when the man turned again
from his
chariot to meet thee? Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and oliveyards, and vineyards, and sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and maidservants?
But
Elisha questioned him, “Did not my spirit go with you when the man got down
from his
chariot to meet you? Is this the time to accept money and clothing, olive groves and vineyards, sheep and oxen, menservants and maidservants?
The
leprosy therefore of
Naaman shall
cleave unto thee, and unto thy seed for ever. And he went out
from his presence a
leper as white as snow.
