And she
vowed a
vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou
wilt indeed look on the
affliction of thine
handmaid, and remember me, and not
forget thine
handmaid, but
wilt give unto thine
handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no
razor come upon his head.
Count not thine
handmaid for a daughter of
Belial: for out of the abundance of my
complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.
Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; for all this time I have been praying out of the depth of my
anguish and grief.”
And she said, Let thine
handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more
sad.
“May your
maidservant find favor with you,” said
Hannah. Then she went on her way, and she began eating again, and her face was no longer
downcast.
And the priest’s custom with the people was, that, when any man offered sacrifice, the priest’s servant came, while the flesh was in
seething, with a
fleshhook of three teeth in his
hand;
or for the custom of the priests with the people. When any man offered a sacrifice, the servant of the priest would come with a three-
pronged meat
fork while the meat was boiling
And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD
smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us
fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of
Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the
hand of our enemies.
When the troops returned to the camp, the elders of Israel asked, “Why has the LORD brought defeat on us before the Philistines
today? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD from
Shiloh, so that it may go with us to save us from the
hand of our enemies.”
Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the
hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that
smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.
Woe to us! Who will deliver us from the
hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness.
And when they arose early on the
morrow morning, behold,
Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the head of
Dagon and both the palms of his
hands were cut off upon the
threshold; only the
stump of
Dagon was left to him.
But when they got up early the next morning, there was
Dagon, fallen on his face before the ark of the LORD, with his head and his
hands broken off and lying on the
threshold. Only the
torso remained.
But the
hand of the LORD was heavy upon them of
Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and
smote them with
emerods, even
Ashdod and the coasts thereof.
Now the
hand of the LORD was heavy on the people of
Ashdod and its vicinity,
ravaging them and
afflicting them with tumors.
And when the men of
Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not
abide with us: for his
hand is
sore upon us, and upon
Dagon our god.
And when the men of
Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, “The ark of the God of Israel must not stay here with us, because His
hand is heavy upon us and upon our god
Dagon.”
And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the
hand of the LORD was against the city with a very great destruction: and he
smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had
emerods in their secret parts.
But after they had moved the ark to
Gath, the LORD’s
hand was also against that city, throwing it into great confusion and
afflicting the men of the city, both young and old, with an outbreak of tumors.
So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it
slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the
hand of God was very heavy there.
Then the Ekronites assembled all the rulers of the Philistines and said, “Send away the ark of the God of Israel. It must return to its place, so that it will not kill us and our people!” For a deadly confusion had
pervaded the city; the
hand of God was heavy upon it.
And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wise return him a
trespass offering: then ye shall be
healed, and it shall be known to you why his
hand is not removed from you.
They replied, “If you return the ark of the God of Israel, do not send it away empty, but by all means return it to Him with a guilt offering. Then you will be
healed, and you will understand why His
hand has not been lifted from you.”
Wherefore ye shall make images of your
emerods, and images of your
mice that
mar the land; and ye shall give glory unto the God of Israel:
peradventure he will
lighten his
hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land.
Make images of your tumors and of the rats that are
ravaging the land. Give glory to the God of Israel, and perhaps He will lift His
hand from you and your gods and your land.
And see, if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Beth-shemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his
hand that
smote us; it was a chance that happened to us.
but keep watching it. If it goes up the road to its homeland, toward Beth-shemesh, it is the LORD who has brought on us this great
disaster. But if it does not, then we will know that it was not His
hand that punished us and that it happened by chance.”
And the
kine took the straight way to the way of Beth-shemesh, and went along the
highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right
hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Beth-shemesh.
And the cows headed straight up the road toward Beth-shemesh, staying on that one
highway and lowing as they went, never
straying to the right or to the left. The rulers of the Philistines followed behind them to the border of Beth-shemesh.
And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and
Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the
hand of the Philistines.
Then Samuel said to all the house of Israel, “If you are returning to the LORD with all your hearts, then rid
yourselves of the foreign gods and Ashtoreths among you, prepare your hearts for the LORD, and serve Him only. And He will deliver you from the
hand of the Philistines.”
And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto the LORD our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines.
and said to Samuel, “Do not stop crying out to the LORD our God for us, that He may save us from the hand of the Philistines.”
So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more into the coast of Israel: and the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.
So the Philistines were subdued, and they stopped
invading the territory of Israel. And the
hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.
And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from
Ekron even unto
Gath; and the coasts thereof did Israel deliver out of the
hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the
Amorites.
The cities from
Ekron to
Gath, which the Philistines had taken, were restored to Israel, who also delivered the surrounding territory from the
hand of the Philistines. And there was peace between the Israelites and the
Amorites.
And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people.
And he had a son named Saul, choice and handsome, without equal among the Israelites—a head taller than any of the people.
And the servant answered Saul again, and said, Behold, I have here at
hand the fourth part of a
shekel of silver: that will I give to the man of God, to tell us our way.
The servant answered him again. “Look,” he said, “I have here in my
hand a quarter
shekel of silver. I will give it to the man of God, and he will tell us our way.”
To
morrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt
anoint him to be captain over my people Israel, that he may save my people out of the
hand of the Philistines: for I have looked upon my people, because their cry is come unto me.
“At this time
tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you are to
anoint him leader over My people Israel; he will save them from the
hand of the Philistines. For I have looked upon My people, because their cry has come to Me.”
And they will
salute thee, and give thee two
loaves of bread; which thou shalt receive of their
hands.
They will
greet you and give you two
loaves of bread, which you will accept from their
hands.
And said unto the children of Israel, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and delivered you out of the
hand of the Egyptians, and out of the
hand of all kingdoms, and of them that
oppressed you:
and said to the Israelites, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I brought Israel up out of Egypt, and I
rescued you from the
hands of the Egyptians and of all the kingdoms that
oppressed you.’
And he took a yoke of oxen, and
hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the
hands of messengers, saying,
Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.
He took a pair of oxen, cut them into pieces, and sent them by messengers throughout the land of Israel,
proclaiming, “This is what will be done to the oxen of
anyone who does not march behind Saul and Samuel.” Then the terror of the LORD fell upon the people, and they turned out as one man.
Behold, here I am: witness against me before the LORD, and before his
anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose
ass have I taken? or whom have I
defrauded? whom have I
oppressed? or of whose
hand have I received any
bribe to blind mine eyes
therewith? and I will restore it you.
Here I am. Bear witness against me before the LORD and before His
anointed: Whose ox or
donkey have I taken? Whom have I
cheated or
oppressed? From whose
hand have I accepted a
bribe and closed my eyes? Tell me, and I will restore it to you.”
And they said, Thou hast not
defrauded us, nor
oppressed us, neither hast thou taken ought of any man’s
hand.
“You have not wronged us or
oppressed us,” they replied, “nor have you taken anything from the
hand of man.”
And he said unto them, The LORD is witness against you, and his
anointed is witness this day, that ye have not found ought in my
hand. And they answered, He is witness.
Samuel said to them, “The LORD is a witness against you, and His
anointed is a witness
today, that you have not found anything in my
hand.” “He is a witness,” they replied.
And when they
forgat the LORD their God, he sold them into the
hand of Sisera, captain of the host of Hazor, and into the
hand of the Philistines, and into the
hand of the king of Moab, and they fought against them.
But they
forgot the LORD their God, and He sold them into the
hand of Sisera the commander of the army of Hazor, and into the
hands of the Philistines and the king of Moab, who fought against them.
And they
cried unto the LORD, and said, We have
sinned, because we have
forsaken the LORD, and have served
Baalim and
Ashtaroth: but now deliver us out of the
hand of our enemies, and we will serve thee.
Then they
cried out to the LORD and said, ‘We have
sinned, for we have
forsaken the LORD and served the Baals and Ashtoreths. Now deliver us from the
hands of our enemies, that we may serve You.’
And the LORD sent Jerubbaal, and Bedan, and
Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the
hand of your enemies on every side, and ye dwelled safe.
So the LORD sent Jerubbaal,
Barak,
Jephthah, and Samuel, and He delivered you from the
hands of your enemies on every side, and you dwelt securely.
But if ye will not obey the voice of the LORD, but
rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then shall the
hand of the LORD be against you, as it was against your fathers.
But if you disobey the LORD and
rebel against His command, then the
hand of the LORD will be against you as it was against your fathers.
So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor
spear found in the
hand of any of the people that were with Saul and
Jonathan: but with Saul and with
Jonathan his son was there found.
So on the day of battle not a sword or
spear could be found in the
hands of the troops with Saul and
Jonathan; only Saul and his son
Jonathan had weapons.
But if they say thus, Come up unto us; then we will go up: for the LORD hath delivered them into our hand: and this shall be a sign unto us.
But if they say, ‘Come on up,’ then we will go up, because this will be our sign that the LORD has delivered them into our hands.”
And the men of the garrison answered
Jonathan and his armourbearer, and said, Come up to us, and we will
shew you a thing. And
Jonathan said unto his armourbearer, Come up after me: for the LORD hath delivered them into the
hand of Israel.
So the men of the outpost called out to
Jonathan and his
armor-bearer, “Come on up, and we will teach you a
lesson!” “Follow me,”
Jonathan told his
armor-bearer, “for the LORD has delivered them into the
hand of Israel.”
And
Jonathan climbed up upon his
hands and upon his feet, and his armourbearer after him: and they fell before
Jonathan; and his armourbearer
slew after him.
So
Jonathan climbed up on his
hands and feet, with his
armor-bearer behind him. And the Philistines fell before
Jonathan, and his
armor-bearer followed and finished them off.
And it came to pass, while Saul talked unto the priest, that the noise that was in the host of the Philistines went on and increased: and Saul said unto the priest, Withdraw thine hand.
While Saul was talking to the priest, the
commotion in the
Philistine camp continued to increase. So Saul said to the priest, “Withdraw your
hand.”
And when the people were come into the wood, behold, the honey dropped; but no man put his hand to his mouth: for the people feared the oath.
And when they entered the forest and saw the flowing honey, not one of them put his hand to his mouth, because they feared the oath.
But
Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath: wherefore he put forth the end of the rod that was in his
hand, and
dipped it in an
honeycomb, and put his
hand to his mouth; and his eyes were
enlightened.
Jonathan, however, had not heard that his father had charged the people with the oath. So he reached out the end of the staff in his
hand,
dipped it into the
honeycomb, and put his
hand to his mouth; and his eyes
brightened.
And Saul asked counsel of God, Shall I go down after the Philistines?
wilt thou deliver them into the
hand of Israel? But he answered him not that day.
So Saul inquired of God, “Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will You give them into the hand of Israel?” But God did not answer him that day.
Then Saul said to
Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. And
Jonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in mine
hand, and, lo, I must die.
“Tell me what you have done,” Saul commanded him. So
Jonathan told him, “I only tasted a little honey with the end of the staff that was in my
hand. And now I must die?”
And he gathered an host, and
smote the
Amalekites, and delivered Israel out of the
hands of them that
spoiled them.
He fought
valiantly and defeated the
Amalekites, delivering Israel from the
hands of its plunderers.
And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was
ruddy, and
withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise,
anoint him: for this is he.
So
Jesse sent for his youngest son and brought him in. He was
ruddy, with beautiful eyes and a
handsome appearance. And the LORD said, “Rise and
anoint him, for he is the one.”
Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a
cunning player on an
harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his
hand, and thou shalt be well.
Let our lord command your servants here to seek out someone who can
skillfully play the
harp. Whenever the spirit of distress from God is upon you, he is to play it, and you will be well.”
Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of
Jesse the
Bethlehemite, that is
cunning in playing, and a mighty
valiant man, and a man of war, and
prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him.
One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of
Jesse of
Bethlehem who knows how to play the
harp. He is a mighty man of
valor, a
warrior,
eloquent and
handsome, and the LORD is with him.”
And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an
harp, and played with his
hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
And whenever the spirit from God came upon Saul, David would
pick up his
harp and play, and Saul would become well, and the spirit of distress would depart from him.
And David left his carriage in the
hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, and came and
saluted his brethren.
Then David left his supplies in the care of the
quartermaster and ran to the battle line. When he arrived, he asked his brothers how they were doing.
David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the
paw of the lion, and out of the
paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the
hand of this
Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.
David added, “The LORD, who delivered me from the claws of the lion and the bear, will deliver me from the
hand of this
Philistine.” “Go,” said Saul, “and may the LORD be with you.”
And he took his staff in his
hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the
brook, and put them in a
shepherd’s
bag which he had, even in a
scrip; and his
sling was in his
hand: and he drew near to the
Philistine.
And David took his staff in his
hand, selected five smooth stones from the
brook, and put them in the
pouch of his
shepherd’s
bag. And with his
sling in
hand, he approached the
Philistine.
And when the
Philistine looked about, and saw David, he
disdained him: for he was but a youth, and
ruddy, and of a fair countenance.
This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine
hand; and I will
smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
This day the LORD will deliver you into my
hand. This day I will strike you down, cut off your head, and give the
carcasses of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the creatures of the earth. Then the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel.
And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and
spear: for the battle is the LORD’S, and he will give you into our
hands.
And all those assembled here will know that it is not by sword or
spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD’s, and He will give all of you into our
hands.”
Thus David prevailed over the
Philistine with a
sling and a stone; without a sword in his
hand he struck down the
Philistine and killed him.
And as David returned from the slaughter of the
Philistine,
Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the
Philistine in his
hand.
So when David returned from killing the
Philistine, still holding his head in his
hand,
Abner took him and brought him before Saul.
And it came to pass on the
morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he
prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his
hand, as at other times: and there was a
javelin in Saul’s
hand.
The next day a spirit of distress sent from God came upon Saul, and he
prophesied inside the house while David played the
harp as usual. Now Saul was holding a
spear,
And Saul said to David, Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give thee to wife: only be thou
valiant for me, and fight the LORD’S battles. For Saul said, Let not mine
hand be upon him, but let the
hand of the Philistines be upon him.
Then Saul said to David, “Here is my older daughter Merab. I will give her to you in marriage. Only be
valiant for me and fight the LORD’s battles.” But Saul was thinking, “I need not raise my
hand against him; let the
hand of the Philistines be against him.”
And Saul said, I will give him her, that she may be a
snare to him, and that the
hand of the Philistines may be against him. Wherefore Saul said to David, Thou shalt this day be my son in law in the one of the
twain.
“I will give her to David,” Saul thought, “so that she may be a
snare to him, and the
hand of the Philistines may be against him.” So Saul said to David, “For a second time now you can be my son-in-law.”
And Saul said, Thus shall ye say to David, The king desireth not any
dowry, but an hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be
avenged of the king’s enemies. But Saul thought to make David fall by the
hand of the Philistines.
Saul replied, “Say to David, ‘The king desires no other
dowry but a hundred
Philistine foreskins as
revenge on his enemies.’” But Saul intended to cause David’s death at the
hands of the Philistines.
For he did put his life in his
hand, and
slew the
Philistine, and the LORD wrought a great salvation for all Israel: thou sawest it, and
didst rejoice: wherefore then
wilt thou sin against innocent blood, to
slay David without a cause?
He took his life in his
hands when he struck down the
Philistine, and the LORD worked a great salvation for all Israel. You saw it and
rejoiced, so why would you sin against innocent blood by killing David for no reason?”
And the evil spirit from the LORD was upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his
javelin in his
hand: and David played with his
hand.
But as Saul was sitting in his house with his
spear in his
hand, a spirit of distress from the LORD came upon him. While David was playing the
harp,
So
Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, Let the LORD even require it at the
hand of David’s enemies.
So
Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, “May the LORD hold David’s enemies accountable.”
And when thou hast stayed three days, then thou shalt go down quickly, and come to the place where thou
didst hide
thyself when the business was in
hand, and shalt remain by the stone Ezel.
When you have stayed three days,
hurry down to the place you
hid on the day this trouble began, and remain beside the stone Ezel.
Now therefore what is under thine
hand? give me five
loaves of bread in mine
hand, or what there is present.
Now then, what do you have on
hand? Give me five
loaves of bread, or whatever can be found.”
And the priest answered David, and said, There is no common bread under mine
hand, but there is
hallowed bread; if the young men have kept themselves at least from women.
“There is no common bread on hand,” the priest replied, “but there is some consecrated bread—provided that the young men have kept themselves from women.”
And David said unto
Ahimelech, And is there not here under thine
hand spear or sword? for I have neither brought my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king’s business required
haste.
Then David asked
Ahimelech, “Is there not a
spear or sword on
hand here? For I have brought neither my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king’s business was
urgent.”
And he changed his behaviour before them, and
feigned himself
mad in their
hands, and
scrabbled on the doors of the gate, and let his
spittle fall down upon his
beard.
When Saul heard that David was discovered, and the men that were with him, (now Saul abode in Gibeah under a tree in
Ramah, having his
spear in his
hand, and all his servants were standing about him;)
Soon Saul learned that David and his men had been discovered. At that time Saul was in Gibeah, sitting under the
tamarisk tree on the hill at Gibeah, with his
spear in
hand and all his servants standing around him.
And the king said unto the
footmen that stood about him, Turn, and
slay the priests of the LORD; because their
hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled, and did not
shew it to me. But the servants of the king would not put forth their
hand to fall upon the priests of the LORD.
Then the king ordered the guards at his side, “Turn and kill the priests of the LORD, because they too sided with David. For they knew he was
fleeing, but they did not tell me.” But the king’s servants would not lift a
hand to strike the priests of the LORD.
Then David enquired of the LORD yet again. And the LORD answered him and said, Arise, go down to Keilah; for I will deliver the Philistines into thine hand.
Once again, David inquired of the LORD, and the LORD answered him: “Go at once to Keilah, for I will deliver the Philistines into your hand.”
And it came to pass, when
Abiathar the son of
Ahimelech fled to David to Keilah, that he came down with an
ephod in his
hand.
And it was told Saul that David was come to Keilah. And Saul said, God hath delivered him into mine hand; for he is shut in, by entering into a town that hath gates and bars.
When Saul was told that David had gone to Keilah, he said, “God has delivered him into my
hand, for he has
trapped himself by entering a town with gates and bars.”
Will the men of Keilah deliver me up into his
hand? will Saul come down, as thy servant hath heard? O LORD God of Israel, I
beseech thee, tell thy servant. And the LORD said, He will come down.
Will the citizens of Keilah surrender me into his hand? Will Saul come down, as Your servant has heard? O LORD, God of Israel, please tell Your servant.” “He will,” said the LORD.
Then said David, Will the men of Keilah deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul? And the LORD said, They will deliver thee up.
So David asked, “Will the citizens of Keilah surrender me and my men into the hand of Saul?” “They will,” said the LORD.
And David abode in the wilderness in strong holds, and remained in a mountain in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God delivered him not into his hand.
And David stayed in the wilderness strongholds and in the hill country of the Wilderness of Ziph. Day after day Saul searched for him, but God would not deliver David into his hand.
And
Jonathan Saul’s son arose, and went to David into the wood, and strengthened his
hand in God.
And Saul’s son
Jonathan came to David in Horesh and strengthened his
hand in God,
And he said unto him, Fear not: for the hand of Saul my father shall not find thee; and thou shalt be king over Israel, and I shall be next unto thee; and that also Saul my father knoweth.
saying, “Do not be afraid, for my father Saul will never lay a hand on you. And you will be king over Israel, and I will be your second-in-command. Even my father Saul knows this is true.”
Now therefore, O king, come down according to all the desire of thy soul to come down; and our part shall be to deliver him into the king’s hand.
Now, O king, come down whenever your soul desires, and we will be responsible for delivering him into your hand.”
And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which the LORD said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine
hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the
skirt of Saul’s
robe privily.
So David’s men said to him, “This is the day about which the LORD said to you, ‘Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your
hand, that you may do with him as you wish.’” Then David
crept up secretly and cut off a corner of Saul’s
robe.
And he said unto his men, The LORD
forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the LORD’S
anointed, to stretch forth mine
hand against him, seeing he is the
anointed of the LORD.
So he said to his men, “The LORD
forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the LORD’s
anointed. May I never lift my
hand against him, since he is the LORD’s
anointed.”
Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered thee to day into mine
hand in the cave: and some
bade me kill thee: but mine eye
spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine
hand against my lord; for he is the LORD’S
anointed.
Behold, this day you have seen with your own eyes that the LORD delivered you into my
hand in the cave. I was told to kill you, but I
spared you and said, ‘I will not lift my
hand against my lord, since he is the LORD’s
anointed.’
Moreover, my father, see,
yea, see the
skirt of thy
robe in my
hand: for in that I cut off the
skirt of thy
robe and killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor
transgression in mine
hand, and I have not
sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it.
See, my father, look at the corner of your
robe in my
hand. For I cut it off, but I did not kill you. See and know that there is no evil or rebellion in my
hands. I have not
sinned against you, even though you are hunting me down to take my life.
The LORD judge between me and thee, and the LORD
avenge me of thee: but mine
hand shall not be upon thee.
May the LORD judge between you and me, and may the LORD take
vengeance on you, but my
hand will never be against you.
As saith the
proverb of the ancients, Wickedness proceedeth from the wicked: but mine
hand shall not be upon thee.
As the old
proverb says, ‘Wickedness proceeds from the wicked.’ But my
hand will never be against you.
The LORD therefore be judge, and judge between me and thee, and see, and
plead my cause, and deliver me out of thine
hand.
May the LORD be our judge and decide between you and me. May He take notice and
plead my case and deliver me from your
hand.”
And thou hast shewed this day how that thou hast dealt well with me:
forasmuch as when the LORD had delivered me into thine
hand, thou killedst me not.
And you have shown this day how well you have dealt with me; for when the LORD delivered me into your hand, you did not kill me.
And now, behold, I know well that thou shalt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thine hand.
Now I know for sure that you will be king, and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in your hands.
Ask thy young men, and they will
shew thee. Wherefore let the young men find favour in thine eyes: for we come in a good day: give, I pray thee,
whatsoever cometh to thine
hand unto thy servants, and to thy son David.
Ask your young men, and they will tell you. So let my young men find favor with you, for we have come on the day of a feast. Please give whatever you can afford to your servants and to your son David.’”
And fell at his feet, and said, Upon me, my lord, upon me let this iniquity be: and let thine
handmaid, I pray thee, speak in thine
audience, and hear the words of thine
handmaid.
She fell at his feet and said, “My lord, may the
blame be on me alone, but please let your servant speak to you; hear the words of your servant.
Let not my lord, I pray thee, regard this man of
Belial, even Nabal: for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: but I thine
handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom thou
didst send.
My lord should pay no attention to this
scoundrel Nabal, for he lives up to his name: His name means
Fool, and folly accompanies him. I, your servant, did not see my lord’s young men whom you sent.
Now therefore, my lord, as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, seeing the LORD hath
withholden thee from coming to shed blood, and from
avenging thyself with thine own
hand, now let thine enemies, and they that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal.
Now, my lord, as surely as the LORD lives and you
yourself live, the LORD has held you back from coming to
bloodshed and
avenging yourself with your own
hand. May your enemies and those who seek
harm for my lord be like Nabal.
And now this blessing which thine
handmaid hath brought unto my lord, let it even be given unto the young men that follow my lord.
Now let this gift your servant has brought to my lord be given to the young men who follow you.
I pray thee,
forgive the
trespass of thine
handmaid: for the LORD will certainly make my lord a sure house; because my lord fighteth the battles of the LORD, and evil hath not been found in thee all thy days.
Please
forgive your servant’s
offense, for the LORD will surely make a lasting dynasty for my lord, because he fights the LORD’s battles. May no evil be found in you as long as you live.
That this shall be no grief unto thee, nor offence of heart unto my lord, either that thou hast shed blood causeless, or that my lord hath
avenged himself: but when the LORD shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember thine
handmaid.
then my lord will have no
remorse or guilt of conscience over needless
bloodshed and
revenge. And when the LORD has dealt well with my lord, may you remember your
maidservant.”
And blessed be thy advice, and blessed be thou, which hast kept me this day from coming to shed blood, and from
avenging myself with mine own
hand.
So David received of her
hand that which she had brought him, and said unto her, Go up in peace to thine house; see, I have
hearkened to thy voice, and have accepted thy person.
Then David accepted from her
hand what she had brought him, and he said to her, “Go home in peace. See, I have
heeded your voice and granted your request.”
And when David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be the LORD, that hath
pleaded the cause of my reproach from the
hand of Nabal, and hath kept his servant from evil: for the LORD hath returned the wickedness of Nabal upon his own head. And David sent and communed with
Abigail, to take her to him to wife.
On hearing that Nabal was dead, David said, “Blessed be the LORD, who has
upheld my cause against the reproach of Nabal and has restrained His servant from evil. For the LORD has brought the wickedness of Nabal down upon his own head.” Then David sent word to
Abigail, asking for her in marriage.
And she arose, and bowed herself on her face to the earth, and said, Behold, let thine
handmaid be a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.
She arose, then bowed facedown and said, “Here is your
maidservant, ready to serve and to wash the feet of my lord’s servants.”
Then said
Abishai to David, God hath delivered thine enemy into thine
hand this day: now therefore let me
smite him, I pray thee, with the
spear even to the earth at once, and I will not
smite him the second time.
Abishai said to David, “
Today God has delivered your enemy into your
hand. Now, therefore, please let me thrust the
spear through him into the ground with one stroke. I will not need to strike him twice!”
And David said to
Abishai, Destroy him not: for who can stretch forth his
hand against the LORD’S
anointed, and be guiltless?
But David said to
Abishai, “Do not destroy him, for who can lift a
hand against the LORD’s
anointed and be guiltless?”
