But when I found that he had committed nothing worthy of death, and that he himself hath appealed to Augustus, I have determined to send him.
But I found he had done nothing worthy of death, and since he has now appealed to the Emperor, I decided to send him.
Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.
and said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul; you must stand before Caesar. And look, God has granted you the lives of all who sail with you.’
And when the barbarians saw the
venomous beast
hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he
hath escaped the sea, yet
vengeance suffereth not to live.
When the islanders saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, “Surely this man is a murderer. Although he was saved from the sea, Justice has not allowed him to live.”
Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
For what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.
Backbiters,
haters of God,
despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things,
disobedient to parents,
What, then, is the advantage of being a
Jew? Or what is the value of
circumcision?
For if the truth of God
hath more abounded through my lie unto his glory; why yet am I also judged as a
sinner?
However, if my
falsehood accentuates God’s truthfulness, to the increase of His glory, why am I still condemned as a
sinner?
Whom God
hath set forth to be a
propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the
forbearance of God;
What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?
What then shall we say that Abraham, our
forefather, has discovered?
For if Abraham were justified by works, he
hath whereof to glory; but not before God.
If Abraham was indeed justified by works, he had something to
boast about, but not before God.
But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.
But the gift is not like the
trespass. For if the many died by the
trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many!
That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, He cannot die again; death no longer has dominion over Him.
Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?
Do you not know, brothers (for I am speaking to those who know the law), that the law has authority over a man only as long as he lives?
For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.
For instance, a married woman is bound by law to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage.
For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I
hate, that do I.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do, I do not do. But what I
hate, I do.
For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
For in Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set you free from the law of sin and death.
For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,
For the creation was subjected to
futility, not by its own will, but because of the One who subjected it, in hope
Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel:
It is not as though God’s word has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel.
As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but
Esau have I
hated.
So it is written: “Jacob I loved, but
Esau I
hated.”
Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.
Therefore God has mercy on whom He wants to have mercy, and He hardens whom He wants to
harden.
Thou
wilt say then unto me, Why
doth he yet find fault? For who
hath resisted his will?
One of you will say to me, “Then why does God still find fault? For who can resist His will?”
Hath not the
potter power over the clay, of the same
lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?
Does not the
potter have the right to make from the same
lump of clay one vessel for special occasions and another for common use?
Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?
including us, whom He has called not only from the Jews, but also from the Gentiles?
But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness.
but Israel, who pursued a law of righteousness, has not attained it.
That if thou shalt
confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God
hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
that if you
confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?
But not all of them
welcomed the good news. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our message?”
I say then,
Hath God cast away his people? God
forbid. For I also am an
Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
I ask then, did God
reject His people? Certainly not! I am an
Israelite myself, a
descendant of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin.
God
hath not cast away his people which he
foreknew.
Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh
intercession to God against Israel, saying,
God did not
reject His people, whom He
foreknew. Do you not know what the Scripture says about
Elijah, how he appealed to God against Israel:
What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded
What then? What Israel was seeking, it failed to obtain, but the
elect did. The others were
hardened,
(According as it is written, God
hath given them the spirit of
slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day.
as it is written: “God gave them a spirit of
stupor, eyes that could not see, and ears that could not hear, to this very day.”
For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all.
For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?
“Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been His
counselor?”
Or who
hath first given to him, and it shall be
recompensed unto him again?
“Who has first given to God, that God should repay him?”
For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think
soberly, according as God
hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.
For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of
yourself more highly than you ought, but think of
yourself with
sober judgment, according to the measure of faith God has given you.
Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
Be indebted to no one, except to one another in love. For he who loves his
neighbor has fulfilled the law.
Let not him that eateth
despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God
hath received him.
The one who eats everything must not
belittle the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted him.
For I will not
dare to speak of any of those things which Christ
hath not wrought by me, to make the Gentiles
obedient, by word and deed,
I will not
presume to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me in leading the Gentiles to obedience by word and deed,
For it
hath pleased them of
Macedonia and
Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor saints which are at Jerusalem.
For
Macedonia and
Achaia were pleased to make a contribution for the poor among the saints in Jerusalem.
It
hath pleased them
verily; and their debtors they are. For if the Gentiles have been made partakers of their spiritual things, their duty is also to minister unto them in
carnal things.
They were pleased to do it, and indeed they owe it to them. For if the Gentiles have shared in their spiritual blessings, they are
obligated to minister to them with material blessings.
That ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in
whatsoever business she
hath need of you: for she
hath been a succourer of many, and of myself also.
Welcome her in the Lord in a manner worthy of the saints, and assist her with anything she may need from you. For she has been a great help to many people, including me.
For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.
My brothers, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you.
Where is the wise? where is the
scribe? where is the disputer of this world?
hath not God made
foolish the wisdom of this world?
Where is the wise man? Where is the
scribe? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made
foolish the wisdom of the world?
But God
hath chosen the
foolish things of the world to
confound the wise; and God
hath chosen the weak things of the world to
confound the things which are mighty;
But God chose the
foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.
And base things of the world, and things which are
despised,
hath God chosen,
yea, and things which are not, to bring to
nought things that are:
He chose the lowly and
despised things of the world, and the things that are not, to
nullify the things that are,
But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
Rather, as it is written: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no heart has imagined, what God has prepared for those who love Him.”
But God
hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things,
yea, the deep things of God.
But God has revealed it to us by the Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.
For who
hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may
instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.
“For who has known the mind of the Lord, so as to
instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ.
If any man’s work
abide which he
hath built
thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
If what he has built survives, he will receive a reward.
For I think that God
hath set forth us the apostles last, as it were appointed to death: for we are made a
spectacle unto the world, and to angels, and to men.
For it seems to me that God has displayed us apostles at the end of the
procession, like prisoners appointed for death. We have become a
spectacle to the whole world, to angels as well as to men.
And ye are
puffed up, and have not rather
mourned, that he that
hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.
And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have been
stricken with grief and have removed from your
fellowship the man who did this?
For I
verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that
hath so done this deed,
Although I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit, and I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did this, just as if I were present.
And God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own power.
By His power God raised the Lord from the dead, and He will raise us also.
The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife.
The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife.
For I would that all men were even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that.
I wish that all men were as I am. But each man has his own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that.
But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away.
To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord): If a brother has an unbelieving wife and she is willing to live with him, he must not
divorce her.
And the woman which hath an husband that believeth not, and if he be pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him.
And if a woman has an unbelieving husband and he is willing to live with her, she must not
divorce him.
But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under
bondage in such cases: but God
hath called us to peace.
But if the unbeliever leaves, let him go. The believing brother or sister is not bound in such cases. God has called you to live in peace.
But as God
hath distributed to every man, as the Lord
hath called every one, so let him walk. And so
ordain I in all churches.
Regardless, each one should lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him and to which God has called him. This is what I
prescribe in all the churches.
Now concerning virgins I have no commandment of the Lord: yet I give my judgment, as one that hath obtained mercy of the Lord to be faithful.
Now about virgins, I have no command from the Lord, but I give a judgment as one who by the Lord’s mercy is
trustworthy.
But and if thou marry, thou hast not
sinned; and if a virgin marry, she
hath not
sinned. Nevertheless such shall have trouble in the flesh: but I
spare you.
But if you do marry, you have not
sinned. And if a virgin marries, she has not
sinned. But those who marry will face troubles in this life, and I want to
spare you this.
Nevertheless he that standeth
stedfast in his heart, having no necessity, but
hath power over his own will, and
hath so decreed in his heart that he will keep his virgin, doeth well.
But the man who is firmly established in his heart and under no
constraint, with control over his will and
resolve in his heart not to marry the virgin, he will do well.
Even so
hath the Lord ordained that they which
preach the gospel should live of the gospel.
In the same way, the Lord has prescribed that those who
preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel.
There
hath no
temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be
tempted above that ye are able; but will with the
temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
No
temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be
tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are
tempted, He will also provide an escape, so that you can stand up under it.
For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.
The body is a unit, though it is composed of many parts. And although its parts are many, they all form one body. So it is with Christ.
But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.
But in fact, God has arranged the members of the body, every one of them, according to His design.
For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked:
whereas our presentable parts have no such need. But God has composed the body and has given greater honor to the parts that lacked it,
And God
hath set some in the church, first apostles,
secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments,
diversities of tongues.
And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, and those with gifts of
healing, helping, administration, and various tongues.
How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you
hath a
psalm,
hath a doctrine,
hath a tongue,
hath a revelation,
hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto
edifying.
What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together,
everyone has a
psalm or a teaching, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. All of these must be done to build up the church.
For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.
For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet.
For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith, all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.
For “God has put everything under His feet.” Now when it says that everything has been put under Him, this clearly does not include the One who put everything under Him.
But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him, and to every seed his own body.
But God gives it a body as He has designed, and to each kind of seed He gives its own body.
Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God
hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.
On the first day of every week, each of you should set aside a portion of his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will be needed.
Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and
hath anointed us, is God;
Now it is God who establishes both us and you in Christ. He
anointed us,
Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.
placed His seal on us, and put His Spirit in our hearts as a
pledge of what is to come.
But if any have caused grief, he
hath not
grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all.
Now if
anyone has caused grief, he has not
grieved me but all of you—to some degree, not to overstate it.
Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.
And He has qualified us as ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
In whom the god of this world
hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should
shine unto them.
The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers so they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
For God, who commanded the light to
shine out of darkness,
hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
For God, who said, “Let light
shine out of darkness,” made His light
shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
Now he that
hath wrought us for the
selfsame thing is God, who also
hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.
And God has prepared us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a
pledge of what is to come.
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive his due for the things done in the body, whether good or bad.
And all things are of God, who
hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and
hath given to us the ministry of
reconciliation;
To wit, that God was in Christ,
reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and
hath committed unto us the word of
reconciliation.
that God was
reconciling the world to Himself in Christ, not counting men’s trespasses against them. And He has committed to us the message of
reconciliation.
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
God made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.
Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what
fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion
hath light with darkness?
Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what
partnership can righteousness have with wickedness? Or what
fellowship does light have with darkness?
What harmony is there between Christ and
Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?
And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
What agreement can exist between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will dwell with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be My people.”
For though I made you
sorry with a letter, I do not
repent, though I did
repent: for I perceive that the same epistle
hath made you
sorry, though it were but for a season.
Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not
regret it. Although I did
regret it, I now see that my letter caused you sorrow, but only for a short time.
For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not.
For if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what he does not have.
For I know the forwardness of your mind, for which I
boast of you to them of
Macedonia, that
Achaia was ready a year ago; and your zeal
hath provoked very many.
For I know your eagerness to help, and I have been
boasting to the Macedonians that since last year you in
Achaia were prepared to give. And your zeal has
stirred most of them to do likewise.
(As it is written, He
hath dispersed abroad; he
hath given to the poor: his righteousness remaineth for ever.
As it is written: “He has scattered abroad His gifts to the poor; His righteousness endures
forever.”
For though I should
boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord
hath given us for
edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be
ashamed:
For even if I
boast somewhat excessively about the authority the Lord gave us for building you up rather than
tearing you down, I will not be
ashamed.
But we will not
boast of things without our measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God
hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even unto you.
We, however, will not
boast beyond our limits, but only within the field of influence that God has assigned to us—a field that reaches even to you.
Therefore I write these things being absent, lest being present I should use sharpness, according to the power which the Lord
hath given me to
edification, and not to destruction.
This is why I write these things while absent, so that when I am present I will not need to be severe in my use of the authority that the Lord gave me for building you up, not for
tearing you down.
Christ
hath redeemed us from the
curse of the law, being made a
curse for us: for it is written,
Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
Christ redeemed us from the
curse of the law by becoming a
curse for us. For it is written: “
Cursed is
everyone who is hung on a tree.”
But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.
But the Scripture pronounces all things confined by sin, so that by faith in Jesus Christ the promise might be given to those who believe.
And because ye are sons, God
hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying,
Abba, Father.
And because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying out, “
Abba, Father!”
For it is written,
Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the
desolate hath many more children than she which
hath an husband.
For it is written: “
Rejoice, O barren woman, who bears no children; break forth and cry
aloud, you who have never
travailed; because more are the children of the
desolate woman than of her who has a husband.”
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not be
encumbered once more by a yoke of slavery.
