And the Spirit of the LORD came
mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would
have rent a
kid, and he had nothing in his hand: but he told not his father or his mother what he had done.
and the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon him, and he
tore the lion apart with his bare hands as one would
tear a young goat. But he did not tell his father or mother what he had done.
And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they said unto
Samson’s wife,
Entice thy husband, that he may declare unto us the
riddle, lest we burn thee and thy father’s house with fire:
have ye called us to take that we
have? is it not so?
So on the fourth day they said to
Samson’s wife, “
Entice your husband to explain the
riddle to us, or we will burn you and your father’s household to death. Did you
invite us here to
rob us?”
And
Samson’s wife
wept before him, and said, Thou
dost but
hate me, and lovest me not: thou hast put forth a
riddle unto the children of my people, and hast not told it me. And he said unto her, Behold, I
have not told it my father nor my mother, and shall I tell it thee?
Then
Samson’s wife came to him,
weeping, and said, “You
hate me! You do not really love me! You
have posed to my people a
riddle, but
have not explained it to me.” “Look,” he said, “I
have not even explained it to my father or mother, so why should I explain it to you?”
And the men of the city said unto him on the seventh day before the sun went down, What is sweeter than honey? and what is stronger than a lion? And he said unto them, If ye had not
plowed with my
heifer, ye had not found out my
riddle.
Before
sunset on the seventh day, the men of the city said to
Samson: “What is sweeter than honey? And what is stronger than a lion?” So he said to them: “If you had not
plowed with my
heifer, you would not
have solved my
riddle!”
And
Samson said unto them, Though ye
have done this, yet will I be
avenged of you, and after that I will cease.
And
Samson told them, “Because you
have done this, I will not rest until I
have taken
vengeance upon you.”
And the men of Judah said, Why are ye come up against us? And they answered, To bind
Samson are we come up, to do to him as he hath done to us.
“Why
have you attacked us?” said the men of Judah. The Philistines replied, “We
have come to arrest
Samson and pay him back for what he has done to us.”
Then three thousand men of Judah went to the top of the rock Etam, and said to
Samson, Knowest thou not that the Philistines are rulers over us? what is this that thou hast done unto us? And he said unto them, As they did unto me, so
have I done unto them.
In
response, three thousand men of Judah went to the cave at the rock of Etam, and they asked
Samson, “Do you not
realize that the Philistines rule over us? What
have you done to us?” “I
have done to them what they did to me,” he replied.
And they said unto him, We are come down to bind thee, that we may deliver thee into the hand of the Philistines. And
Samson said unto them,
Swear unto me, that ye will not fall upon me
yourselves.
But they said to him, “We
have come down to arrest you and hand you over to the Philistines.”
Samson replied, “
Swear to me that you will not kill me
yourselves.”
And
Samson said, With the
jawbone of an
ass, heaps upon heaps, with the jaw of an
ass have I slain a thousand men.
And
Samson said unto her, If they bind me with seven green withs that were never dried, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.
Samson told her, “If they
tie me up with seven fresh bowstrings that
have not been dried, I will become as weak as any other man.”
And he said unto her, If they bind me fast with new ropes that never were occupied, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.
He replied, “If they
tie me up with new ropes that
have never been used, I will become as weak as any other man.”
And
Delilah said unto
Samson, Hitherto thou hast
mocked me, and told me lies: tell me
wherewith thou mightest be bound. And he said unto her, If thou weavest the seven locks of my head with the web.
Then
Delilah said to
Samson, “You
have mocked me and
lied to me all along! Tell me how you can be
tied up.” He told her, “If you
weave the seven braids of my head into the web of a
loom and
tighten it with a pin, I will become as weak as any other man.”
And she said unto him, How canst thou say, I love thee, when thine heart is not with me? thou hast
mocked me these three times, and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth.
“How can you say, ‘I love you,’” she asked, “when your heart is not with me? This is the third time you
have mocked me and failed to
reveal to me the source of your great strength!”
That he told her all his heart, and said unto her. There hath not come a
razor upon mine head; for I
have been a
Nazarite unto God from my mother’s
womb: if I be
shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.
Samson told her all that was in his heart: “My hair has never been cut, because I
have been a
Nazirite to God from my mother’s
womb. If I am
shaved, my strength will leave me, and I will become as weak as any other man.”
And he said unto his mother, The eleven hundred shekels of silver that were taken from thee, about which thou cursedst, and spakest of also in mine ears, behold, the silver is with me; I took it. And his mother said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my son.
said to his mother, “The eleven hundred shekels of silver that were taken from you and about which I heard you utter a
curse—I
have the silver here with me; I took it.” Then his mother said, “Blessed be my son by the LORD!”
Then said
Micah, Now know I that the LORD will do me good, seeing I
have a
Levite to my priest.
Then
Micah said, “Now I know that the LORD will be good to me, because a
Levite has become my priest.”
And they said unto him, Ask counsel, we pray thee, of God, that we may know whether our way which we go shall be prosperous.
Then they said to him, “Please inquire of God to determine whether we will have a successful journey.”
And they said, Arise, that we may go up against them: for we
have seen the land, and, behold, it is very good: and are ye still? be not
slothful to go, and to enter to possess the land.
They answered, “Come on, let us go up against them, for we
have seen the land, and it is very good. Why would you fail to act? Do not
hesitate to go there and take possession of the land!
Then answered the five men that went to
spy out the country of Laish, and said unto their brethren, Do ye know that there is in these houses an
ephod, and
teraphim, and a
graven image, and a
molten image? now therefore consider what ye
have to do.
Then the five men who had gone to
spy out the land of Laish said to their brothers, “Did you know that one of these houses has an
ephod, household gods, a
graven image, and a
molten idol? Now think about what you should do.”
And they
cried unto the children of
Dan. And they turned their faces, and said unto
Micah, What aileth thee, that thou comest with such a company?
When they called out after them, the Danites turned to face them and said to
Micah, “What is the matter with you that you
have called out such a company?”
And he said, Ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and ye are gone away: and what have I more? and what is this that ye say unto me, What aileth thee?
He replied, “You took the gods I had made, and my priest, and went away. What else do I have? How can you say to me, ‘What is the matter with you?’”
And when he had lifted up his eyes, he saw a
wayfaring man in the street of the city: and the old man said,
Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?
When he looked up and saw the traveler in the city square, the old man asked, “Where are you going, and where have you come from?”
Now as they were making their hearts
merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of
Belial,
beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him.
While they were enjoying themselves, suddenly the wicked men of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they said to the old man who owned the house, “Bring out the man who came to your house, so we can have relations with him!”
And the men of Gibeah rose against me, and
beset the house round about upon me by night, and thought to
have slain me: and my
concubine have they forced, that she is dead.
And during the night, the men of Gibeah rose up against me and surrounded the house. They intended to kill me, but they
abused my
concubine, and she died.
And I took my
concubine, and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israel: for they
have committed
lewdness and folly in Israel.
Then I took my
concubine, cut her into pieces, and sent her throughout the land of Israel’s inheritance, because they had committed a
lewd and disgraceful act in Israel.
And we will take ten men of an hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and an hundred of a thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand, to
fetch victual for the people, that they may do, when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the folly that they
have wrought in Israel.
We will take ten men out of every hundred from all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred out of every thousand, and a thousand out of every ten thousand, to supply provisions for the army when they go to Gibeah in Benjamin to
punish them for the
atrocity they
have committed in Israel.”
How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing we
have sworn by the LORD that we will not give them of our daughters to wives?
What should we do about wives for the survivors, since we
have sworn by the LORD not to give them our daughters in marriage?”
Then the elders of the congregation said, How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?
Then the elders of the congregation said, “What should we do about wives for those who remain, since the women of Benjamin have been destroyed?”
Howbeit we may not give them wives of our daughters: for the children of Israel
have sworn, saying,
Cursed be he that giveth a wife to Benjamin.
But we cannot give them our daughters as wives.” For the Israelites had
sworn, “
Cursed is he who gives a wife to a
Benjamite.”
And it shall be, when their fathers or their brethren come unto us to
complain, that we will say unto them, Be favourable unto them for our sakes: because we reserved not to each man his wife in the war: for ye did not give unto them at this time, that ye should be guilty.
When their fathers or brothers come to us to
complain, we will tell them, ‘Do us a favor by helping them, since we did not get wives for each of them in the war. Since you did not actually give them your daughters, you
have no guilt.’”
And
Naomi said unto her two daughters in law, Go, return each to her mother’s house: the LORD deal kindly with you, as ye
have dealt with the dead, and with me.
Then
Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go back, each of you to your mother’s home. May the LORD show you loving devotion, as you
have shown to your dead and to me.
Turn again, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have an husband. If I should say, I have hope, if I should have an husband also to night, and should also bear sons;
Return home, my daughters. Go on, for I am too old to
have another husband. Even if I thought there was hope for me to
have a husband
tonight and to bear sons,
Let thine eyes be on the field that they do
reap, and go thou after them:
have I not charged the young men that they shall not touch thee? and when thou art
athirst, go unto the vessels, and drink of that which the young men
have drawn.
Let your eyes be on the field they are harvesting, and follow along after these girls. Indeed, I
have ordered the young men not to touch you. And when you are
thirsty, go and drink from the jars the young men
have filled.”
Then she fell on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and said unto him, Why have I found grace in thine eyes, that thou shouldest take knowledge of me, seeing I am a stranger?
At this, she fell on her face, bowing low to the ground, and said to him, “Why have I found such favor in your eyes that you should take notice of me, even though I am a foreigner?”
And Boaz answered and said unto her, It hath fully been shewed me, all that thou hast done unto thy mother in law since the death of thine husband: and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother, and the land of thy
nativity, and art come unto a people which thou knewest not
heretofore.
Boaz replied, “I have been made fully aware of all you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband, how you left your father and mother and the land of your birth, and how you came to a people you did not know before.
The LORD
recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the LORD God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust.
May the LORD repay your work, and may you receive a rich reward from the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have taken refuge.”
Then she said, Let me find favour in thy sight, my lord; for that thou hast comforted me, and for that thou hast spoken friendly unto thine
handmaid, though I be not like unto one of thine handmaidens.
“My lord,” she said, “may I continue to find favor in your eyes, for you
have comforted and spoken kindly to your
maidservant, though I am not like one of your servant girls.”
And Boaz said unto her, At
mealtime come thou
hither, and eat of the bread, and dip thy
morsel in the
vinegar. And she sat beside the reapers: and he reached her
parched corn, and she did eat, and was sufficed, and left.
At
mealtime Boaz said to her, “Come over here;
have some bread and dip it into the
vinegar sauce.” So she sat down beside the harvesters, and he offered her
roasted grain, and she
ate and was satisfied and had some left over.
And
Ruth the
Moabitess said, He said unto me also, Thou shalt keep fast by my young men, until they
have ended all my harvest.
Then
Ruth the
Moabitess said, “He also told me, ‘Stay with my young men until they
have finished gathering all my harvest.’”
And now is not Boaz of our kindred, with whose maidens thou
wast? Behold, he winnoweth barley to night in the threshingfloor.
Now is not Boaz, with whose servant girls you
have been working, a relative of ours? In fact,
tonight he is
winnowing barley on the
threshing floor.
Wash
thyself therefore, and
anoint thee, and put thy
raiment upon thee, and get thee down to the floor: but make not
thyself known unto the man, until he shall
have done eating and drinking.
Therefore wash
yourself, put on
perfume, and wear your best clothes. Go down to the
threshing floor, but do not let the man know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking.
And he said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my daughter: for thou hast shewed more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou followedst not young men, whether poor or rich.
Then Boaz said, “May the LORD
bless you, my daughter. You
have shown more kindness now than before, because you
have not run after the younger men, whether rich or poor.
Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, until he have finished the thing this day.
“Wait, my daughter,” said
Naomi, “until you find out how things go, for he will not rest unless he has resolved the matter
today.”
And Boaz said unto the elders, and unto all the people, Ye are witnesses this day, that I
have bought all that was Elimelech’s, and all that was Chilion’s and Mahlon’s, of the hand of
Naomi.
At this, Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses
today that I am
buying from
Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech, Chilion, and Mahlon.
Moreover
Ruth the
Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon,
have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day.
Moreover, I
have acquired
Ruth the
Moabitess, Mahlon’s widow, as my wife, to raise up the name of the deceased through his inheritance, so that his name will not disappear from among his brothers or from the gate of his home. You are witnesses
today.”
And
Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I
have drunken neither wine nor strong drink, but
have poured out my soul before the LORD.
“No, my lord,”
Hannah replied. “I am a woman
oppressed in spirit. I
have not had any wine or strong drink, but I
have poured out my soul before the LORD.
Count not thine
handmaid for a daughter of
Belial: for out of the abundance of my
complaint and grief
have I spoken hitherto.
Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; for all this time I
have been praying out of the depth of my
anguish and grief.”
Then
Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.
“Go in peace,”
Eli replied, “and may the God of Israel grant the petition you
have asked of Him.”
Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after
Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I
have asked him of the LORD.
So in the course of time,
Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, “Because I
have asked for him from the LORD.”
And Elkanah her husband said unto her, Do what seemeth thee good;
tarry until thou
have weaned him; only the LORD establish his word. So the woman abode, and gave her son
suck until she
weaned him.
“Do what you think is best,” her husband Elkanah replied, “and stay here until you
have weaned him. Only may the LORD
confirm His word.” So
Hannah stayed and
nursed her son until she had
weaned him.
Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshipped the LORD there.
I now
dedicate the boy to the LORD. For as long as he lives, he is dedicated to the LORD.” So they worshiped the LORD there.
They that were full
have hired out themselves for bread; and they that were
hungry ceased: so that the barren hath born seven; and she that hath many children is waxed feeble.
The well-fed
hire themselves out for food, but the
starving hunger no more. The barren woman gives birth to seven, but she who has many sons pines away.
Also before they burnt the fat, the priest’s servant came, and said to the man that sacrificed, Give flesh to
roast for the priest; for he will not
have sodden flesh of thee, but raw.
Even before the fat was burned, the servant of the priest would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, “Give the priest some meat to
roast, because he will not accept boiled meat from you, but only raw.”
Wherefore
kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering, which I
have commanded in my
habitation; and honourest thy sons above me, to make
yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people?
Why then do you
kick at My sacrifice and offering that I
have prescribed for My dwelling place? You
have honored your sons more than Me by
fattening yourselves with the best of all the offerings of My people Israel.’
And he ran unto
Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down.
He ran to
Eli and said, “Here I am, for you
have called me.” “I did not call,”
Eli replied. “Go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down.
And the LORD called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to
Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou
didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again.
Once again the LORD called, “Samuel!” So Samuel got up, went to
Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you
have called me.” “My son, I did not call,”
Eli replied. “Go back and lie down.”
And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to
Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou
didst call me. And
Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child.
Once again, for the third time, the LORD called to Samuel. He got up, went to
Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you
have called me.” Then
Eli realized that it was the LORD who was calling the boy.
In that day I will perform against
Eli all things which I
have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end.
On that day I will carry out against
Eli everything I
have spoken about his family, from beginning to end.
For I
have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves
vile, and he restrained them not.
I told him that I would judge his house
forever for the iniquity of which he knows, because his sons
blasphemed God and he did not restrain them.
And therefore I
have sworn unto the house of
Eli, that the iniquity of
Eli’s house shall not be
purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever.
Therefore I
have sworn to the house of
Eli, ‘The iniquity of
Eli’s house shall never be
atoned for by sacrifice or offering.’”
And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said,
Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing
heretofore.
the Philistines were afraid. “The gods
have entered their camp!” they said. “
Woe to us, for nothing like this has happened before.
Be strong, and
quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they
have been to you:
quit yourselves like men, and fight.
Take courage and be men, O Philistines! Otherwise, you will serve the Hebrews just as they served you. Now be men and fight!”
And the man said unto
Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son?
“I
have just come from the battle,” the man said to
Eli. “I fled from there
today.” “What happened, my son?”
Eli asked.
And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.
As she was dying, the women attending to her said, “Do not be afraid, for you
have given birth to a son!” But she did not
respond or pay any
heed.
Therefore they sent the ark of God to
Ekron. And it came to pass, as the ark of God came to
Ekron, that the Ekronites
cried out, saying, They
have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to
slay us and our people.
So they sent the ark of God to
Ekron, but as it arrived, the Ekronites
cried out, “They
have brought us the ark of the God of Israel in order to kill us and our people!”
Now therefore make a new
cart, and take two
milch kine, on which there hath come no yoke, and
tie the
kine to the
cart, and bring their
calves home from them:
Now, therefore, prepare one new
cart with two milk cows that
have never been yoked.
Hitch the cows to the
cart, but take their
calves away and pen them up.
And they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kirjath-jearim, saying, The Philistines
have brought again the ark of the LORD; come ye down, and
fetch it up to you.
So they sent messengers to the people of Kiriath-jearim, saying, “The Philistines have returned the ark of the LORD. Come down and take it up with you.”
And they gathered together to Mizpeh, and drew water, and poured it out before the LORD, and fasted on that day, and said there, We
have sinned against the LORD. And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpeh.
When they had gathered at
Mizpah, they drew water and poured it out before the LORD. On that day they fasted, and there they
confessed, “We
have sinned against the LORD.” And Samuel judged the Israelites at
Mizpah.
And the LORD said unto Samuel,
Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they
have not rejected thee, but they
have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.
And the LORD said to Samuel, “
Listen to the voice of the people in all that they say to you. For it is not you they
have rejected, but they
have rejected Me as their king.
According to all the works which they
have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day,
wherewith they
have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.
Just as they
have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day,
forsaking Me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you.
And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day.
When that day comes, you will
beg for relief from the king you
have chosen, but the LORD will not answer you on that day.”
Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said,
Nay; but we will
have a king over us;
Nevertheless, the people refused to
listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We must
have a king over us.
Then said Saul to his servant, But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? for the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God: what have we?
“If we do go,” Saul replied, “what can we give the man? For the bread in our packs is gone, and there is no gift to take to the man of God. What do we have?”
And the servant answered Saul again, and said, Behold, I
have here at hand the fourth part of a
shekel of silver: that will I give to the man of God, to tell us our way.
The servant answered him again. “Look,” he said, “I
have here in my hand a quarter
shekel of silver. I will give it to the man of God, and he will tell us our way.”
And they answered them, and said, He is; behold, he is before you: make
haste now, for he came to day to the city; for there is a sacrifice of the people to day in the high place:
“
Yes, he is
ahead of you,” they answered. “
Hurry now, for
today he has come to the city because the people
have a sacrifice on the high place.
To
morrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt
anoint him to be captain over my people Israel, that he may save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I
have looked upon my people, because their cry is come unto me.
“At this time
tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you are to
anoint him leader over My people Israel; he will save them from the hand of the Philistines. For I
have looked upon My people, because their cry has come to Me.”
And as for thine
asses that were lost three days ago, set not thy mind on them; for they are found. And on whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on thee, and on all thy father’s house?
As for the
donkeys you lost three days ago, do not
worry about them, for they
have been found. And upon whom is all the desire of Israel, if not upon you and all your father’s house?”
And the
cook took up the shoulder, and that which was upon it, and set it before Saul. And Samuel said, Behold that which is left! set it before thee, and eat: for unto this time hath it been kept for thee since I said, I
have invited the people. So Saul did eat with Samuel that day.
So the
cook picked up the leg and what was attached to it and set it before Saul. Then Samuel said, “Here is what was kept back. It was set apart for you. Eat, for it has been kept for you for this occasion, from the time I said, ‘I
have invited the people.’” So Saul
dined with Samuel that day.
When thou art departed from me to day, then thou shalt find two men by
Rachel’s
sepulchre in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say unto thee, The
asses which thou wentest to seek are found: and, lo, thy father hath left the care of the
asses, and sorroweth for you, saying, What shall I do for my son?
When you leave me
today, you will find two men at
Rachel’s tomb in Zelzah on the border of Benjamin. They will say to you, ‘The
donkeys you seek
have been found, and now your father has stopped
worrying about the
donkeys and started
worrying about you, asking, “What should I do about my son?”’
After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither to the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place with a
psaltery, and a
tabret, and a pipe, and a
harp, before them; and they shall
prophesy:
After that you will come to Gibeah of God, where the Philistines
have an outpost. As you approach the city, you will meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place, preceded by harps, tambourines, flutes, and lyres, and they will be
prophesying.
And let it be, when these signs are come unto thee, that thou do as occasion serve thee; for God is with thee.
When these signs have come, do as the occasion demands, for God is with you.
And ye
have this day rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your
adversities and your tribulations; and ye
have said unto him,
Nay, but set a king over us. Now therefore present
yourselves before the LORD by your tribes, and by your thousands.
But
today you
have rejected your God, who saves you from all your troubles and afflictions, and you
have said to Him, ‘No, set a king over us.’ Now therefore present
yourselves before the LORD by your tribes and clans.”
And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of
Jabesh-
gilead, To
morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall
have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of
Jabesh; and they were
glad.
And Samuel said unto all Israel, Behold, I
have hearkened unto your voice in all that ye said unto me, and
have made a king over you.
Then Samuel said to all Israel, “I
have listened to your voice in all that you
have said to me, and I
have set over you a king.
And now, behold, the king walketh before you: and I am old and grayheaded; and, behold, my sons are with you: and I
have walked before you from my
childhood unto this day.
Now here is the king walking before you, and I am old and gray, and my sons are here with you. I have walked before you from my youth until this day.
Behold, here I am: witness against me before the LORD, and before his
anointed: whose ox
have I taken? or whose
ass have I taken? or whom
have I
defrauded? whom
have I
oppressed? or of whose hand
have I received any
bribe to blind mine eyes
therewith? and I will restore it you.
Here I am. Bear witness against me before the LORD and before His
anointed: Whose ox or
donkey have I taken? Whom
have I
cheated or
oppressed? From whose hand
have I accepted a
bribe and closed my eyes? Tell me, and I will restore it to you.”
And they said, Thou hast not
defrauded us, nor
oppressed us, neither hast thou taken ought of any man’s hand.
“You
have not wronged us or
oppressed us,” they replied, “nor
have you taken anything from the hand of man.”
And he said unto them, The LORD is witness against you, and his
anointed is witness this day, that ye
have not found ought in my hand. And they answered, He is witness.
Samuel said to them, “The LORD is a witness against you, and His
anointed is a witness
today, that you
have not found anything in my hand.” “He is a witness,” they replied.
And they
cried unto the LORD, and said, We
have sinned, because we
have forsaken the LORD, and
have served
Baalim and
Ashtaroth: but now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve thee.
Then they
cried out to the LORD and said, ‘We
have sinned, for we
have forsaken the LORD and served the Baals and Ashtoreths. Now deliver us from the hands of our enemies, that we may serve You.’
And when ye saw that Nahash the king of the children of
Ammon came against you, ye said unto me,
Nay; but a king shall reign over us: when the LORD your God was your king.
But when you saw that Nahash king of the
Ammonites was moving against you, you said to me, ‘No, we must
have a king to rule over us’—even though the LORD your God was your king.
Now therefore behold the king whom ye have chosen, and whom ye have desired! and, behold, the LORD hath set a king over you.
Now here is the king you have chosen, the one you requested. Behold, the LORD has placed a king over you.
Is it not wheat harvest to day? I will call unto the LORD, and he shall send
thunder and rain; that ye may perceive and see that your wickedness is great, which ye
have done in the sight of the LORD, in asking you a king.
Is it not the wheat harvest
today? I will call on the LORD to send
thunder and rain, so that you will know and see what a great evil you
have committed in the sight of the LORD by asking for a king.”
And all the people said unto Samuel, Pray for thy servants unto the LORD thy God, that we die not: for we have added unto all our sins this evil, to ask us a king.
They
pleaded with Samuel, “Pray to the LORD your God for your servants so that we will not die! For we
have added to all our sins the evil of asking for a king.”
And Samuel said unto the people, Fear not: ye have done all this wickedness: yet turn not aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart;
“Do not be afraid,” Samuel replied. “Even though you have committed all this evil, do not turn aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart.
And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at
Michmash;
“What
have you done?” Samuel asked. And Saul replied, “When I saw that the troops were deserting me, and that you did not come at the appointed time and the Philistines were gathering at
Michmash,
Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to
Gilgal, and I
have not made
supplication unto the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering.
I thought, ‘Now the Philistines will descend upon me at
Gilgal, and I
have not sought the favor of the LORD.’ So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering.”
And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done
foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD
have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.
“You
have acted
foolishly,” Samuel declared. “You
have not kept the command that the LORD your God gave you; if you had, the LORD would
have established your kingdom over Israel for all time.
But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.
But now your kingdom will not
endure; the LORD has sought a man after His own heart and appointed him ruler over His people, because you
have not kept the command of the LORD.”
