For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.
For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His prized possession out of all peoples on the face of the earth.
Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God; him shalt thou serve, and to him shalt thou
cleave, and
swear by his name.
You are to fear the LORD your God and serve Him. Hold fast to Him and take your oaths in His name.
For if ye shall
diligently keep all these commandments which I command you, to do them, to love the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, and to
cleave unto him;
For if you carefully keep all these commandments I am giving you to follow—to love the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways, and to hold fast to Him—
Only thy holy things which thou hast, and thy vows, thou shalt take, and go unto the place which the LORD shall choose:
But you are to take your
holy things and your
vow offerings and go to the place the LORD will choose.
Ye shall walk after the LORD your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and
cleave unto him.

listen to His voice; serve Him and
hold fast to Him.

Ye shall not eat of any thing that dieth of itself: thou shalt give it unto the stranger that is in thy gates, that he may eat it; or thou mayest sell it unto an
alien: for thou art an
holy people unto the LORD thy God. Thou shalt not
seethe a
kid in his mother’s milk.
You are not to eat any

holy people belonging to the LORD your God. You must not
cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.

unleavened bread: and on the seventh day shall be a solemn assembly to the LORD thy God: thou shalt do no work therein.

And it shall come to pass, that
whosoever will not
hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.

hold accountable
anyone who does not

Be
merciful, O LORD, unto thy people Israel, whom thou hast redeemed, and lay not innocent blood unto thy people of Israel’s charge. And the blood shall be
forgiven them.

atonement, O LORD, for Your people Israel whom You have redeemed, and do not
hold the
shedding of innocent blood against them.” And the
bloodshed will be
atoned for.

If a man find a
damsel that is a virgin, which is not
betrothed, and lay
hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found;
If a man encounters a virgin who is not
pledged in marriage, and he seizes her and lies with her, and they are discovered,
And thou shalt have a
paddle upon thy weapon; and it shall be, when thou
wilt ease
thyself abroad, thou shalt
dig therewith, and shalt turn back and cover that which cometh from thee:
For the LORD thy God walketh in the midst of thy camp, to deliver thee, and to give up thine enemies before thee; therefore shall thy camp be holy: that he see no unclean thing in thee, and turn away from thee.
For the LORD your God walks throughout your camp to protect you and deliver your enemies to you. Your camp must be holy, lest He see anything unclean among you and turn away from you.
Look down from thy
holy habitation, from heaven, and
bless thy people Israel, and the land which thou hast given us, as thou swarest unto our fathers, a land that floweth with milk and honey.
Look down from Your
holy habitation, from heaven, and
bless Your people Israel and the land You have given us as You
swore to our fathers—a land flowing with milk and honey.”

holy people unto himself, as he hath
sworn unto thee, if thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, and walk in his ways.

sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of the LORD your God and walk in His ways.
That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest
cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD
sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.
and that you may love the LORD your God, obey Him, and
hold fast to Him. For He is your life, and He will
prolong your life in the land that the LORD
swore to give to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”
If I
whet my
glittering sword, and mine hand take
hold on judgment; I will render
vengeance to mine enemies, and will reward them that
hate me.
Because ye
trespassed against me among the children of Israel at the waters of Meribah-Kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin; because ye
sanctified me not in the midst of the children of Israel.
For at the waters of Meribah-kadesh in the Wilderness of Zin, both of you broke faith with Me among the Israelites by failing to treat Me as holy in their presence.
And he said, The LORD came from
Sinai, and rose up from
Seir unto them; he
shined forth from mount
Paran, and he came with ten thousands of saints: from his right hand went a
fiery law for them.
He said: “The LORD came from
Sinai and
dawned upon us from
Seir; He
shone forth from Mount
Paran and came with myriads of
holy ones, with flaming fire at His right hand.
Yea, he loved the people; all his saints are in thy hand: and they sat down at thy feet; every one shall receive of thy words.
Surely You love the people; all the holy ones are in Your hand, and they sit down at Your feet; each receives Your words—
And of Levi he said, Let thy
Thummim and thy
Urim be with thy
holy one, whom thou
didst prove at Massah, and with whom thou
didst strive at the waters of Meribah;

Thummim to Levi and Your
Urim to Your godly one, whom You tested at Massah and contested at the waters of Meribah.

holy.” And Joshua did so.

spear that is in thy hand toward
Ai; for I will give it into thine hand. And Joshua stretched out the
spear that he had in his hand toward the city.

lance toward
Ai, for into your hand I will deliver the city.” So Joshua held out his battle
lance toward
Ai,
And
Goshen, and
Holon, and Giloh; eleven cities with their villages:

Holon, and Giloh—eleven cities, along with their villages.
And Holon with her suburbs, and Debir with her suburbs,
Holon, Debir,
But take
diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to
cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.
But be very careful to observe the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you: to love the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways, to keep His commandments, to hold fast to Him, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul.”
That we have built us an altar to turn from following the LORD, or if to offer
thereon burnt offering or meat offering, or if to offer peace offerings
thereon, let the LORD himself require it;
If we have built for ourselves an altar to turn away from Him and to offer burnt offerings and grain offerings on it, or to sacrifice
fellowship offerings on it, may the LORD Himself
hold us accountable.
But
cleave unto the LORD your God, as ye have done unto this day.

And Joshua said unto the people, Ye cannot serve the LORD: for he is an
holy God; he is a

holy God; He is a
jealous God; He will not
forgive your rebellion or your sins.

And the three companies
blew the
trumpets, and
brake the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left hands, and the
trumpets in their right hands to blow
withal: and they
cried, The sword of the LORD, and of
Gideon.
The three companies
blew their horns and
shattered their jars.
Holding the torches in their left hands and the horns in their right hands, they
shouted, “A sword for the LORD and for
Gideon!”
But the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness,
wherewith by me they honour God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?
But the olive tree replied, ‘Should I stop giving my oil that honors both God and man, to
hold sway over the trees?’
But the fig tree said unto them, Should I
forsake my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to be promoted over the trees?
But the fig tree replied, ‘Should I stop giving my sweetness and my good fruit, to
hold sway over the trees?’
And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?
But the
grapevine replied, ‘Should I stop giving my wine that cheers both God and man, to
hold sway over the trees?’
And when all the men of the tower of
Shechem heard that, they entered into an
hold of the house of the god Berith.
On hearing of this, all the leaders in the tower of
Shechem entered the inner chamber of the temple of El-berith.
And all the people likewise cut down every man his
bough, and followed
Abimelech, and put them to the
hold, and set the
hold on fire upon them; so that all the men of the tower of
Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.
So each man also cut his own branch and followed
Abimelech. Then they piled the branches against the inner chamber and set it on fire above them, killing
everyone in the tower of
Shechem, about a thousand men and women.
But God
clave an
hollow place that was in the jaw, and there came water
thereout; and when he had
drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived: wherefore he called the name thereof En-hakkore, which is in Lehi unto this day.
So God opened up the
hollow place in Lehi, and water came out of it. When
Samson drank, his strength returned, and he was revived. That is why he named it En-hakkore, and it remains in Lehi to this day.
And
Samson lay till
midnight, and arose at
midnight, and took the doors of the gate of the city, and the two posts, and went away with them, bar and all, and put them upon his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of an hill that is before
Hebron.
But
Samson lay there only until
midnight, when he got up, took
hold of the doors of the city gate and both gateposts, and pulled them out, bar and all. Then he put them on his shoulders and took them to the top of the mountain overlooking
Hebron.
And
Samson took
hold of the two middle pillars upon which the house stood, and on which it was borne up, of the one with his right hand, and of the other with his left.
And
Samson reached out for the two central pillars supporting the temple.
Bracing himself against them with his right hand on one
pillar and his left hand on the other,
And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be a priest unto the house of one man, or that thou be a priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?
“Be quiet,” they told him. “Put your hand over your mouth and come with us and be a father and a priest to us. Is it better for you to be a priest for the house of one person or a priest for a tribe and family in Israel?”
And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid
hold on his
concubine, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel.
When he reached his house, he
picked up a knife, took
hold of his
concubine, cut her limb by limb into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout the territory of Israel.
Also he said, Bring the
vail that thou hast upon thee, and
hold it. And when she held it, he measured six measures of barley, and laid it on her: and she went into the city.
And he told her, “Bring the
shawl you are wearing and
hold it out.” When she did so, he
shoveled six measures of barley into her
shawl. Then he went into the city.
There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God.

And the men of Beth-shemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy LORD God? and to whom shall he go up from us?
The men of Beth-shemesh asked, “Who can stand in the presence of the LORD, this holy God? To whom should the ark go up from here?”
And the elders of
Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee.
“
Hold off for seven days,” replied the elders of
Jabesh, “and let us send messengers throughout Israel. If there is no one to save us, we will surrender to you.”
And both of them discovered themselves unto the garrison of the Philistines: and the Philistines said, Behold, the Hebrews come forth out of the
holes where they had
hid themselves.
So the two of them showed themselves to the outpost of the Philistines, who
exclaimed, “Look, the Hebrews are coming out of the
holes in which they were hiding!”
And as Samuel turned about to go away, he laid
hold upon the
skirt of his
mantle, and it rent.
And as David returned from the slaughter of the
Philistine,
Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the
Philistine in his hand.
So when David returned from killing the
Philistine, still
holding his head in his hand,
Abner took him and brought him before Saul.
And it came to pass on the
morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he
prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a
javelin in Saul’s hand.
The next day a spirit of distress sent from God came upon Saul, and he
prophesied inside the house while David played the
harp as usual. Now Saul was
holding a
spear,
So
Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, Let the LORD even require it at the hand of David’s enemies.
So
Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, “May the LORD
hold David’s enemies accountable.”
And he said, Let me go, I pray thee; for our family hath a sacrifice in the city; and my brother, he hath commanded me to be there: and now, if I have found favour in thine eyes, let me get away, I pray thee, and see my brethren. Therefore he cometh not unto the king’s table.
saying, ‘Please let me go, because our clan is holding a sacrifice in the city, and my brother has told me to be there. So now, if I have found favor in your eyes, please let me go and see my brothers.’ That is why he did not come to the king’s table.”
And David answered the priest, and said unto him, Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days, since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are
holy, and the bread is in a manner common,
yea, though it were
sanctified this day in the vessel.
David answered, “Women have indeed been kept from us, as is usual when I set out. And the
equipment of the young men is
holy, as it is even on common missions, and all the more at this time.”
And he brought them before the king of Moab: and they dwelt with him all the while that David was in the hold.
So he left them in the care of the king of Moab, and they stayed with him the whole time David was in the
stronghold.

Abide not in the
hold; depart, and get thee into the land of Judah. Then David departed, and came into the forest of Hareth.

stronghold. Depart and go into the land of Judah.” So David left and went to the forest of Hereth.
And David abode in the wilderness in strong holds, and remained in a mountain in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God delivered him not into his hand.

Then came up the Ziphites to Saul to Gibeah, saying,

holds in the wood, in the hill of Hachilah, which is on the south of Jeshimon?
Then the Ziphites came up to Saul at Gibeah and said, “Is not David hiding among us in the strongholds at Horesh, on the hill of Hachilah south of Jeshimon?
And David went up from thence, and dwelt in strong holds at En-gedi.
And David went up from there and lived in the strongholds of En-gedi.
And David
sware unto Saul. And Saul went home; but David and his men
gat them up unto the
hold.
So David gave his oath to Saul. Then Saul returned home, but David and his men went up to the
stronghold.
And
Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal’s heart was
merry within him, for he was very
drunken: wherefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light.
When
Abigail returned to Nabal, there he was in the house,
holding a feast fit for a king, in high spirits and very
drunk. So she told him nothing until morning light.
Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that were with him:
Then David took
hold of his own clothes and
tore them, and all the men who were with him did the same.
And
Abner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and lay thee
hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armour. But
Asahel would not turn aside from following of him.
And
Abner said again to
Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me: wherefore should I
smite thee to the ground? how then should I
hold up my face to
Joab thy brother?
When one told me, saying, Behold, Saul is dead, thinking to have brought good
tidings, I took
hold of him, and
slew him in
Ziklag, who thought that I would have given him a reward for his
tidings:
when someone told me, ‘Look, Saul is dead,’ and thought he was a bearer of good news, I seized him and put him to death at
Ziklag. That was his reward for his news!
Nevertheless David took the strong
hold of

But when the Philistines heard that they had
anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines came up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went down to the
hold.

stronghold.
And when they came to Nachon’s threshingfloor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took
hold of it; for the oxen
shook it.
When they came to the
threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah reached out and took
hold of the ark of God, because the oxen had
stumbled.
And when she had brought them unto him to eat, he took hold of her, and said unto her, Come lie with me, my sister.
And when she had brought them to him to eat, he took hold of her and said, “Come lie with me, my sister!”
And
Absalom her brother said unto her, Hath Amnon thy brother been with thee? but
hold now thy peace, my sister: he is thy brother; regard not this thing. So Tamar remained
desolate in her brother
Absalom’s house.
Her brother
Absalom said to her, “Has your brother Amnon been with you? Be quiet for now, my sister. He is your brother. Do not take this thing to heart.” So Tamar lived as a
desolate woman in the house of her brother
Absalom.
And it was so, that when any man came
nigh to him to do him
obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took him, and
kissed him.
Also, when
anyone approached to bow down to him,
Absalom would reach out his hand, take
hold of him, and
kiss him.
And
Absalom met the servants of David. And
Absalom rode upon a
mule, and the
mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught
hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the
mule that was under him went away.
Now
Absalom was riding on his
mule when he met the servants of David, and as the
mule went under the thick branches of a large oak,
Absalom’s head was caught fast in the tree. The
mule under him kept going, so that he was suspended in midair.
And said unto the king, Let not my lord
impute iniquity unto me, neither do thou remember that which thy servant did
perversely the day that my lord the king went out of Jerusalem, that the king should take it to his heart.
and said, “My lord, do not
hold me guilty, and do not remember your servant’s
wrongdoing on the day my lord the king left Jerusalem. May the king not take it to heart.
He sent from above, he took me; he drew me out of many waters;
He reached down from on high and took hold of me; He drew me out of deep waters.
And David was then in an
hold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then in
Bethlehem.
At that time David was in the
stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines was at
Bethlehem.
And came to the strong
hold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the
Hivites, and of the
Canaanites: and they went out to the south of Judah, even to Beer-
sheba.
They went toward the fortress of Tyre and all the cities of the
Hivites and
Canaanites. Finally, they went on to the Negev of Judah, to
Beersheba.
And Adonijah feared because of Solomon, and arose, and went, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.
But Adonijah, in fear of Solomon, got up and went to take hold of the horns of the altar.
And it was told Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonijah feareth king Solomon: for, lo, he hath caught
hold on the horns of the altar, saying, Let king Solomon
swear unto me to day that he will not
slay his servant with the sword.
It was reported to Solomon: “Behold, Adonijah fears King Solomon, and he has taken
hold of the horns of the altar, saying, ‘Let King Solomon first
swear to me not to put his servant to the sword.’”
Now therefore
hold him not guiltless: for thou art a wise man, and knowest what thou oughtest to do unto him; but his
hoar head bring thou down to the grave with blood.
Now therefore, do not
hold him guiltless, for you are a wise man. You know what you ought to do to him to bring his gray head down to
Sheol in blood.”
Then
tidings came to
Joab: for
Joab had turned after Adonijah, though he turned not after
Absalom. And
Joab fled unto the tabernacle of the LORD, and caught
hold on the horns of the altar.
When the news reached
Joab, who had
conspired with Adonijah but not with
Absalom, he fled to the tent of the LORD and took
hold of the horns of the altar.
And he built twenty cubits on the sides of the house, both the floor and the walls with boards of
cedar: he even built them for it within, even for the
oracle, even for the most
holy place.
He partitioned off the twenty cubits at the rear of the temple with
cedar boards from floor to
ceiling to form within the temple an inner sanctuary, the Most
Holy Place.
And it was an hand breadth thick, and the
brim thereof was wrought like the
brim of a cup, with flowers of
lilies: it contained two thousand baths.
Then made he ten lavers of brass: one
laver contained forty baths: and every
laver was four cubits: and upon every one of the ten bases one
laver.
He also made ten bronze basins, each holding forty baths and measuring four cubits across, one basin for each of the ten stands.
And the
bowls, and the
snuffers, and the basons, and the spoons, and the censers of pure gold; and the hinges of gold, both for the doors of the inner house, the most
holy place, and for the doors of the house, to wit, of the temple.
the pure gold basins,
wick trimmers,
sprinkling bowls, ladles, and censers; and the gold hinges for the doors of the inner temple (that is, the Most
Holy Place) as well as for the doors of the main hall of the temple.
And they brought up the ark of the LORD, and the tabernacle of the congregation, and all the holy vessels that were in the tabernacle, even those did the priests and the Levites bring up.
and they brought up the ark of the LORD and the Tent of Meeting with all its sacred furnishings. So the priests and Levites carried them up.
And the priests brought in the ark of the covenant of the LORD unto his place, into the
oracle of the house, to the most
holy place, even under the wings of the cherubims.
Then the priests brought the ark of the covenant of the LORD to its place in the inner sanctuary of the temple, the Most
Holy Place, beneath the wings of the
cherubim.
And they drew out the
staves, that the ends of the
staves were seen out in the
holy place before the
oracle, and they were not seen without: and there they are unto this day.
The poles extended far enough that their ends were visible from the Holy Place in front of the inner sanctuary, but not from outside the Holy Place; and they are there to this day.
And it came to pass, when the priests were come out of the holy place, that the cloud filled the house of the LORD,
And when the priests came out of the Holy Place, the cloud filled the house of the LORD
And they shall answer, Because they
forsook the LORD their God, who brought forth their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and have taken
hold upon other gods, and have worshipped them, and served them: therefore hath the LORD brought upon them all this evil.
And others will answer, ‘Because they have
forsaken the LORD their God who brought their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and have embraced other gods, worshiping and serving them—because of this, the LORD has brought all this
disaster upon them.’”
And
Ahijah caught the new garment that was on him, and rent it in twelve pieces:
And
Ahijah took
hold of the new
cloak he was wearing,
tore it into twelve pieces,
And it came to pass, when king
Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had
cried against the altar in
Bethel, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay
hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him.
Now when King
Jeroboam, who was at the altar in
Bethel, heard the word that the man of God had
cried out against it, he stretched out his hand and said, “Seize him!” But the hand he stretched out toward him
withered, so that he could not pull it back.
And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD: and he made a
trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.
And with the stones,
Elijah built an altar in the name of the LORD. Then he
dug a
trench around the altar large enough to
hold two seahs of seed.
And the sons of the prophets that were at
Bethel came forth to
Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he said,
Yea, I know it;
hold ye your peace.
Then the sons of the prophets at
Bethel came out to
Elisha and said, “Do you know that the LORD will take your master away from you
today?” “
Yes, I know,” he replied. “Do not speak of it.”
And the sons of the prophets that were at
Jericho came to
Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he answered,
Yea, I know it;
hold ye your peace.
Then the sons of the prophets at
Jericho came up to
Elisha and said, “Do you know that the LORD will take your master away from you
today?” “
Yes, I know,” he replied. “Do not speak of it.”
And
Elisha saw it, and he
cried, My father, my father, the
chariot of Israel, and the
horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took
