And they went out into the fields, and gathered their vineyards, and
trode the grapes, and made
merry, and went into the
house of their god, and did eat and drink, and
cursed Abimelech.
And after they had gone out into the fields, gathered grapes from their vineyards, and
trodden them, they held a festival and went into the
house of their god; and as they
ate and
drank, they
cursed Abimelech.
And when all the men of the tower of
Shechem heard that, they entered into an hold of the
house of the god Berith.
On hearing of this, all the leaders in the tower of
Shechem entered the inner chamber of the temple of El-berith.
Moreover the children of
Ammon passed over Jordan to fight also against Judah, and against Benjamin, and against the
house of Ephraim; so that Israel was
sore distressed.
The
Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to fight against Judah, Benjamin, and the
house of Ephraim, and Israel was in deep distress.
And
Gilead’s wife bare him sons; and his wife’s sons grew up, and they thrust out
Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not
inherit in our father’s
house; for thou art the son of a strange woman.
And
Gilead’s wife bore him sons who grew up, drove
Jephthah out, and said to him, “You shall have no inheritance in our father’s
house, because you are the son of another woman.”
And
Jephthah said unto the elders of
Gilead, Did not ye
hate me, and
expel me out of my father’s
house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?
Jephthah replied to the elders of
Gilead, “Did you not
hate me and
expel me from my father’s
house? Why then have you come to me now, when you are in distress?”
Then it shall be, that
whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my
house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of
Ammon, shall surely be the LORD’S, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.
then whatever comes out the door of my
house to
greet me on my
triumphant return from the
Ammonites will belong to the LORD, and I will offer it up as a burnt offering.”
And
Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his
house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with
timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.
And when
Jephthah returned home to
Mizpah, there was his daughter coming out to meet him with tambourines and dancing! She was his only child; he had no son or daughter besides her.
And the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and went northward, and said unto
Jephthah, Wherefore passedst thou over to fight against the children of
Ammon, and
didst not call us to go with thee? we will burn thine
house upon thee with fire.
Then the men of Ephraim assembled and crossed the Jordan to Zaphon. They said to
Jephthah, “Why have you crossed over to fight the
Ammonites without calling us to go with you? We will burn your
house down with you inside!”
And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they said unto
Samson’s wife,
Entice thy husband, that he may declare unto us the
riddle, lest we burn thee and thy father’s
house with fire: have ye called us to take that we have? is it not so?
So on the fourth day they said to
Samson’s wife, “
Entice your husband to explain the
riddle to us, or we will burn you and your father’s
household to death. Did you
invite us here to
rob us?”
And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, and
slew thirty men of them, and took their
spoil, and gave change of garments unto them which
expounded the
riddle. And his anger was
kindled, and he went up to his father’s
house.
Then the Spirit of the LORD came
mightily upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, killed thirty of their men, took their
apparel, and gave their clothes to those who had
solved the
riddle. And burning with anger,
Samson returned to his father’s
house,
But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to
Gaza, and bound him with
fetters of brass; and he did
grind in the prison
house.
Then the Philistines seized him,
gouged out his eyes, and brought him down to
Gaza, where he was bound with bronze
shackles and forced to
grind grain in the prison.
And it came to pass, when their hearts were
merry, that they said, Call for
Samson, that he may make us
sport. And they called for
Samson out of the prison
house; and he made them
sport: and they set him between the pillars.
And while their hearts were
merry, they said, “Call for
Samson to
entertain us.” So they called
Samson out of the prison to
entertain them. And they stationed him between the pillars.
And
Samson said unto the
lad that held him by the hand, Suffer me that I may feel the pillars
whereupon the
house standeth, that I may
lean upon them.
Samson said to the servant who held his hand, “Lead me where I can feel the pillars supporting the temple, so I can
lean against them.”
Now the
house was full of men and women; and all the lords of the Philistines were there; and there were upon the roof about three thousand men and women, that
beheld while
Samson made
sport.
Now the temple was full of men and women; all the lords of the Philistines were there, and about three thousand men and women were on the roof watching
Samson entertain them.
And
Samson took hold of the two middle pillars upon which the
house stood, and on which it was borne up, of the one with his right hand, and of the other with his left.
And
Samson reached out for the two central pillars supporting the temple.
Bracing himself against them with his right hand on one
pillar and his left hand on the other,
And
Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines. And he bowed himself with all his might; and the
house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein. So the dead which he
slew at his death were more than they which he
slew in his life.
Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines.” Then he pushed with all his might, and the temple fell on the lords and all the people in it. So in his death he killed more than he had killed in his life.
Then his brethren and all the
house of his father came down, and took him, and brought him up, and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the buryingplace of
Manoah his father. And he judged Israel twenty years.
Then
Samson’s brothers and his father’s family came down, carried him back, and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of his father
Manoah. And he had judged Israel twenty years.
Yet he restored the money unto his mother; and his mother took two hundred shekels of silver, and gave them to the founder, who made thereof a
graven image and a
molten image: and they were in the
house of
Micah.
So he returned the silver to his mother, and she took two hundred shekels of silver and gave them to a
silversmith, who made them into a
graven image and a
molten idol. And they were placed in the
house of
Micah.
And the man
Micah had an
house of gods, and made an
ephod, and
teraphim, and consecrated one of his sons, who became his priest.
Now this man
Micah had a
shrine, and he made an
ephod and some
household idols, and ordained one of his sons as his priest.
And the man departed out of the city from Bethlehemjudah to
sojourn where he could find a place: and he came to mount Ephraim to the
house of
Micah, as he journeyed.
This man left the city of
Bethlehem in Judah to settle where he could find a place. And as he traveled, he came to
Micah’s
house in the hill country of Ephraim.
And
Micah consecrated the
Levite; and the young man became his priest, and was in the
house of
Micah.
Micah ordained the
Levite, and the young man became his priest and lived in his
house.
And the children of
Dan sent of their family five men from their coasts, men of valour, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to
spy out the land, and to search it; and they said unto them, Go, search the land: who when they came to mount Ephraim, to the
house of
Micah, they
lodged there.
So the Danites sent out five men from their clans, men of
valor from Zorah and Eshtaol, to
spy out the land and
explore it. “Go and
explore the land,” they told them. The men entered the hill country of Ephraim and came to the
house of
Micah, where they spent the night.
When they were by the
house of
Micah, they knew the voice of the young man the
Levite: and they turned in thither, and said unto him, Who brought thee
hither? and what makest thou in this place? and what hast thou here?
And while they were near
Micah’s
house, they recognized the voice of the young
Levite; so they went over and asked him, “Who brought you here? What are you doing in this place? Why are you here?”
And they passed thence unto mount Ephraim, and came unto the
house of
Micah.
And from there they traveled to the hill country of Ephraim and came to
Micah’s
house.
Then answered the five men that went to
spy out the country of Laish, and said unto their brethren, Do ye know that there is in these
houses an
ephod, and
teraphim, and a
graven image, and a
molten image? now therefore consider what ye have to do.
Then the five men who had gone to
spy out the land of Laish said to their brothers, “Did you know that one of these
houses has an
ephod,
household gods, a
graven image, and a
molten idol? Now think about what you should do.”
So they turned aside there and went to the home of the young
Levite, the
house of
Micah, and
greeted him.
And the five men that went to
spy out the land went up, and came in thither, and took the
graven image, and the
ephod, and the
teraphim, and the
molten image: and the priest stood in the entering of the gate with the six hundred men that were appointed with weapons of war.
And the five men who had gone to
spy out the land went inside and took the
graven image, the
ephod, the
household idols, and the
molten idol, while the priest stood at the entrance of the gate with the six hundred armed men.
And these went into
Micah’s
house, and
fetched the carved image, the
ephod, and the
teraphim, and the
molten image. Then said the priest unto them, What do ye?
When they entered
Micah’s
house and took the
graven image, the
ephod, the
household idols, and the
molten idol, the priest said to them, “What are you doing?”
And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be a priest unto the house of one man, or that thou be a priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?
“Be quiet,” they told him. “Put your hand over your mouth and come with us and be a father and a priest to us. Is it better for you to be a priest for the house of one person or a priest for a tribe and family in Israel?”
And the priest’s heart was
glad, and he took the
ephod, and the
teraphim, and the
graven image, and went in the midst of the people.
So the priest was
glad and took the
ephod, the
household idols, and the
graven image, and went with the people.
And when they were a good way from the
house of
Micah, the men that were in the
houses near to
Micah’s
house were gathered together, and overtook the children of
Dan.
After they were some distance from
Micah’s
house, the men in the
houses near
Micah’s
house mobilized and overtook the Danites.
And the children of
Dan said unto him, Let not thy voice be heard among us, lest
angry fellows run upon thee, and thou lose thy life, with the lives of thy
household.
The Danites said to him, “Do not raise your voice against us, or
angry men will attack you, and you and your family will lose your lives.”
And the children of
Dan went their way: and when
Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back unto his
house.
So the Danites went on their way, and
Micah turned to go back home, because he saw that they were too strong for him.
And they set them up
Micah’s
graven image, which he made, all the time that the
house of God was in
Shiloh.
So they set up for themselves
Micah’s
graven image, and it was there the whole time the
house of God was in
Shiloh.
And his
concubine played the
whore against him, and went away from him unto her father’s
house to Bethlehemjudah, and was there four whole months.
But she was unfaithful to him and left him to return to her father’s
house in
Bethlehem in Judah. After she had been there four months,
And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak friendly unto her, and to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of
asses: and she brought him into her father’s
house: and when the father of the
damsel saw him, he
rejoiced to meet him.
her husband got up and went after her to speak kindly to her and bring her back, taking his servant and a pair of
donkeys. So the
girl brought him into her father’s
house, and when her father saw him, he
gladly welcomed him.
And they turned aside thither, to go in and to
lodge in Gibeah: and when he went in, he sat him down in a street of the city: for there was no man that took them into his
house to
lodging.
They stopped to go in and
lodge in Gibeah. The
Levite went in and sat down in the city square, but no one would take them into his home for the night.
And he said unto him, We are passing from Bethlehemjudah toward the side of mount Ephraim; from thence am I: and I went to Bethlehemjudah, but I am now going to the house of the LORD; and there is no man that receiveth me to house.
The
Levite replied, “We are traveling from
Bethlehem in Judah to the remote hill country of Ephraim, where I am from. I went to
Bethlehem in Judah, and now I am going to the
house of the LORD; but no one has taken me into his home,
So he brought him into his
house, and gave
provender unto the
asses: and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.
So he brought him to his
house and fed his
donkeys. And they washed their feet and
ate and
drank.
Now as they were making their hearts
merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of
Belial,
beset the
house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the
house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine
house, that we may know him.
While they were enjoying themselves, suddenly the wicked men of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they said to the old man who owned the house, “Bring out the man who came to your house, so we can have relations with him!”
And the man, the master of the
house, went out unto them, and said unto them,
Nay, my brethren,
nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine
house, do not this folly.
The owner of the
house went out and said to them, “No, my brothers, do not do this wicked thing! After all, this man is a
guest in my
house. Do not commit this
outrage.
Then came the woman in the
dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man’s
house where her lord was, till it was light.
Early that morning, the woman went back to the
house where her master was staying,
collapsed at the
doorway, and lay there until it was light.
And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the
house, and went out to go his way: and, behold, the woman his
concubine was fallen down at the door of the
house, and her hands were upon the
threshold.
In the morning, when her master got up and opened the doors of the
house to go out on his journey, there was his
concubine,
collapsed in the
doorway of the
house, with her hands on the
threshold.
And when he was come into his
house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his
concubine, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel.
When he reached his
house, he
picked up a knife, took hold of his
concubine, cut her limb by limb into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout the territory of Israel.
And the men of Gibeah rose against me, and
beset the
house round about upon me by night, and thought to have slain me: and my
concubine have they forced, that she is dead.
And during the night, the men of Gibeah rose up against me and surrounded the
house. They intended to kill me, but they
abused my
concubine, and she died.
And all the people arose as one man, saying, We will not any of us go to his tent, neither will we any of us turn into his house.
Then all the people stood as one man and said, “Not one of us will return to his tent or to his house.
And the children of Israel arose, and went up to the house of God, and asked counsel of God, and said, Which of us shall go up first to the battle against the children of Benjamin? And the LORD said, Judah shall go up first.
The Israelites set out, went up to
Bethel, and inquired of God, “Who of us shall go up first to fight against the Benjamites?” “Judah will be first,” the LORD replied.
Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto the
house of God, and
wept, and sat there before the LORD, and fasted that day until even, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.
Then the Israelites, all the people, went up to
Bethel, where they sat
weeping before the LORD. That day they fasted until evening and presented burnt offerings and peace offerings to the LORD.
And the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to
smite of the people, and kill, as at other times, in the
highways, of which one goeth up to the
house of God, and the other to Gibeah in the field, about thirty men of Israel.
The Benjamites came out against them and were drawn away from the city. They began to attack the people as before, killing about thirty men of Israel in the fields and on the roads, one of which led up to
Bethel and the other to Gibeah.
And the people came to the
house of God, and abode there till even before God, and lifted up their voices, and
wept sore;
So the people came to
Bethel and sat there before God until evening, lifting up their voices and
weeping bitterly.
And
Naomi said unto her two daughters in law, Go, return each to her mother’s
house: the LORD deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me.
Then
Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go back, each of you to your mother’s home. May the LORD show you loving devotion, as you have shown to your dead and to me.
The LORD grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the
house of her husband. Then she
kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and
wept.
May the LORD enable each of you to find rest in the home of your new husband.” And she
kissed them as they
wept aloud And she said, I pray you, let me
glean and gather after the reapers among the
sheaves: so she came, and hath continued even from the morning until now, that she
tarried a little in the
house.
She has said, ‘Please let me
glean and gather among the
sheaves after the harvesters.’ So she came out and has continued from morning until now, except that she rested a short time in the shelter.”
And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The LORD make the woman that is come into thine
house like
Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the
house of Israel: and do thou
worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in
Bethlehem:
“We are witnesses,” said the elders and all the people at the gate. “May the LORD make the woman entering your home like
Rachel and Leah, who together built up the
house of Israel. May you be prosperous in Ephrathah and famous in
Bethlehem.
And let thy house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bare unto Judah, of the seed which the LORD shall give thee of this young woman.
And may your
house become like the
house of
Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, because of the offspring the LORD will give you by this young woman.”
And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the
house of the LORD, so she
provoked her; therefore she
wept, and did not eat.
And this went on year after year. Whenever
Hannah went up to the
house of the LORD, her rival
taunted her until she
wept and would not eat.
And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the LORD, and returned, and came to their
house to
Ramah: and Elkanah knew
Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her.
The next morning Elkanah and
Hannah got up early to bow in worship before the LORD, and then returned home to
Ramah. And Elkanah had relations with his wife
Hannah, and the LORD remembered her.
And the man Elkanah, and all his
house, went up to offer unto the LORD the yearly sacrifice, and his
vow.
Then Elkanah and all his
house went up to make the annual sacrifice to the LORD and to
fulfill his
vow,
And when she had
weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one
ephah of flour, and a
bottle of wine, and brought him unto the
house of the LORD in
Shiloh: and the child was young.
Once she had
weaned him,
Hannah took the boy with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an
ephah of flour, and a skin of wine. Though the boy was still young, she brought him to the
house of the LORD at
Shiloh.
And Elkanah went to
Ramah to his
house. And the child did minister unto the LORD before
Eli the priest.
Then Elkanah went home to
Ramah, but the boy began ministering to the LORD before
Eli the priest.
And there came a man of God unto
Eli, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Did I plainly appear unto the
house of thy father, when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh’s
house?
Then a man of God came to
Eli and told him, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Did I not clearly
reveal Myself to your father’s
house when they were in Egypt under Pharaoh’s
house?
And did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to offer upon mine altar, to burn incense, to wear an
ephod before me? and did I give unto the
house of thy father all the offerings made by fire of the children of Israel?
And out of all the tribes of Israel I selected your father to be My priest, to offer sacrifices on My altar, to burn incense, and to wear an
ephod in My presence. I also gave to the
house of your father all the offerings of the Israelites made by fire.
Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy
house, and the
house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that
despise me shall be lightly esteemed.
Therefore, the LORD, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I did indeed say that your
house and the
house of your father would walk before Me
forever. But now the LORD declares: Far be it from Me! For I will honor those who honor Me, but those who
despise Me will be
disdained.
Behold, the days come, that I will cut off thine arm, and the arm of thy father’s house, that there shall not be an old man in thine house.
Behold, the days are coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your father’s house, so that no older man will be left in your house.
And thou shalt see an enemy in my
habitation, in all the wealth which God shall give Israel: and there shall not be an old man in thine
house for ever.
You will see distress in My dwelling place.
Despite all that is good in Israel, no one in your
house will ever again reach old age.
And the man of thine, whom I shall not cut off from mine altar, shall be to
consume thine eyes, and to
grieve thine heart: and all the increase of thine
house shall die in the flower of their age.
And every one of you that I do not cut off from My altar, your eyes will fail and your heart will
grieve. All your descendants will die by the sword of men.
And I will raise me up a faithful priest, that shall do according to that which is in mine heart and in my mind: and I will build him a sure
house; and he shall walk before mine
anointed for ever.
Then I will raise up for Myself a faithful priest. He will do whatever is in My heart and mind. And I will build for him an
enduring house, and he will walk before My
anointed one for all time.
And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left in thine
house shall come and
crouch to him for a piece of silver and a
morsel of bread, and shall say, Put me, I pray thee, into one of the priests’ offices, that I may eat a piece of bread.
And
everyone left in your
house will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver or a
morsel of bread,
pleading, “Please
appoint me to some priestly office so that I can eat a piece of bread.”’”
In that day I will perform against
Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his
house: when I begin, I will also make an end.
On that day I will carry out against
Eli everything I have spoken about his family, from beginning to end.
For I have told him that I will judge his
house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves
vile, and he restrained them not.
I told him that I would judge his
house forever for the iniquity of which he knows, because his sons
blasphemed God and he did not restrain them.
And therefore I have
sworn unto the
house of
Eli, that the iniquity of
Eli’s
house shall not be
purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever.
Therefore I have
sworn to the
house of
Eli, ‘The iniquity of
Eli’s
house shall never be
atoned for by sacrifice or offering.’”
And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the
house of the LORD. And Samuel feared to
shew Eli the vision.
Samuel lay down until the morning; then he opened the doors of the
house of the LORD. He was afraid to tell
Eli the vision,
When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the
house of
Dagon, and set it by
Dagon.
carried it into the temple of
Dagon, and set it beside his statue.
And the men of Kirjath-jearim came, and brought up the ark of the LORD, and brought it into the
house of Abinadab in the hill, and
sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the LORD.
Then the men of Kiriath-jearim came for the ark of the LORD and took it into Abinadab’s
house on the hill. And they consecrated his son
Eleazar to guard the ark of the LORD.
And it came to pass, while the ark abode in Kirjath-jearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the
house of Israel
lamented after the LORD.
And from that day a long time passed, twenty years in all, as the ark remained at Kiriath-jearim. And all the
house of Israel
mourned and sought after the LORD.
And Samuel spake unto all the
house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and
Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.
Then Samuel said to all the
house of Israel, “If you are returning to the LORD with all your hearts, then rid
yourselves of the foreign gods and Ashtoreths among you, prepare your hearts for the LORD, and serve Him only. And He will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.”
And his return was to
Ramah; for there was his
house; and there he judged Israel; and there he built an altar unto the LORD.
Then he would return to
Ramah because his home was there, and there he judged Israel and built an altar to the LORD.
Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, where the
seer’s
house is.
Saul approached Samuel in the
gateway and asked, “Would you please tell me where the
seer’s
house is?”
And as for thine
asses that were lost three days ago, set not thy mind on them; for they are found. And on whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on thee, and on all thy father’s
house?
As for the
donkeys you lost three days ago, do not
worry about them, for they have been found. And upon whom is all the desire of Israel, if not upon you and all your father’s
house?”
And when they were come down from the high place into the city, Samuel communed with Saul upon the top of the house.
And after they had come down from the high place into the city, Samuel spoke with Saul on the roof of his house.
And they arose early: and it came to pass about the spring of the day, that Samuel called Saul to the top of the house, saying, Up, that I may send thee away. And Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad.
They got up early in the morning, and just before
dawn Samuel called to Saul on the roof, “Get ready, and I will send you on your way!” So Saul arose, and both he and Samuel went outside together.
Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the LORD. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.
Then Samuel explained to the people the rights of
kingship. He wrote them on a
scroll and laid it up before the LORD. And Samuel sent all the people away, each to his own home.
Then Samuel went to
Ramah; and Saul went up to his
house to Gibeah of Saul.
Then Samuel went to
Ramah, but Saul went up to his home in Gibeah of Saul.
And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to
defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will
enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father’s
house free in Israel.
Now the men of Israel had been saying, “Do you see this man who keeps coming out to
defy Israel? To the man who kills him the king will give great riches. And he will give him his daughter in marriage and
exempt his father’s
house from taxation in Israel.”
And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father’s house.
And from that day Saul kept David with him and did not let him return to his father’s house.
And it came to pass on the
morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he
prophesied in the midst of the
house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a
javelin in Saul’s hand.
The next day a spirit of distress sent from God came upon Saul, and he
prophesied inside the
house while David played the
harp as usual. Now Saul was holding a
spear,
And the evil spirit from the LORD was upon Saul, as he sat in his
house with his
javelin in his hand: and David played with his hand.
But as Saul was sitting in his
house with his
spear in his hand, a spirit of distress from the LORD came upon him. While David was playing the
harp,
Saul also sent messengers unto David’s
house, to watch him, and to
slay him in the morning: and Michal David’s wife told him, saying, If thou save not thy life to night, to
morrow thou shalt be slain.
Then Saul sent messengers to David’s
house to watch him and kill him in the morning. But David’s wife Michal
warned him, “If you do not run for your life
tonight,
tomorrow you will be dead!”
And Michal took an image, and laid it in the bed, and put a
pillow of goats hair for his
bolster, and covered it with a cloth.
Then Michal took a
household idol and laid it in the bed, placed some goat hair on its head, and covered it with a garment.
But also thou shalt not cut off thy kindness from my house for ever: no, not when the LORD hath cut off the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth.
and do not ever cut off your loving devotion from my household—not even when the LORD cuts off every one of David’s enemies from the face of the earth.”
So
Jonathan made a covenant with the
house of David, saying, Let the LORD even require it at the hand of David’s enemies.
So
Jonathan made a covenant with the
house of David, saying, “May the LORD hold David’s enemies accountable.”
Have I need of
mad men, that ye have brought this fellow to play the
mad man in my presence? shall this fellow come into my
house?
Am I in need of
madmen, that you have brought this man to
rave in my presence? Must this man come into my
house?”
David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave
Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father’s
house heard it, they went down thither to him.
So David left
Gath and took refuge in the cave of
Adullam. When his brothers and the rest of his father’s
household heard about it, they went down to him there.
Then the king sent to call
Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father’s
house, the priests that were in
Nob: and they came all of them to the king.
Then the king sent messengers to
summon Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and his father’s whole family, who were priests at
Nob. And all of them came to the king.
Then
Ahimelech answered the king, and said, And who is so faithful among all thy servants as David, which is the king’s son in law, and goeth at thy
bidding, and is honourable in thine
house?
Ahimelech answered the king, “Who among all your servants is as faithful as David, the king’s son-in-law, the captain of your
bodyguard who is honored in your
house?
Did I then begin to
enquire of God for him? be it far from me: let not the king
impute any thing unto his servant, nor to all the
house of my father: for thy servant knew nothing of all this, less or more.
Was that day the first time I inquired of God for him? Far be it from me! Let not the king
accuse your servant or any of my father’s
household, for your servant knew nothing of this whole
affair—not in part or in whole.”
And the king said, Thou shalt surely die,
Ahimelech, thou, and all thy father’s
house.
But the king replied, “You will surely die,
Ahimelech, you and all your father’s
house!”
And David said unto
Abiathar, I knew it that day, when Doeg the
Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul: I have occasioned the death of all the persons of thy father’s
house.
Then David said to
Abiathar, “I knew that Doeg the
Edomite was there that day, and that he was sure to tell Saul. I myself am responsible for the lives of
everyone in your father’s
house.
And they two made a covenant before the LORD: and David abode in the wood, and
Jonathan went to his
house.
So the two of them made a covenant before the LORD. And David remained in Horesh, while
Jonathan went home.
