Then the disciples took him by night, and let him down by the wall in a
basket.
One night,
however, his disciples took him and lowered him in a
basket through a window in the wall.
But
Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared unto them
how he had seen the Lord in the way, and that he had spoken to him, and
how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus.
Then
Barnabas brought him to the apostles and described
how Saul had seen the Lord, who spoke to him on the road to Damascus, and
how Saul had spoken boldly in that city in the name of Jesus.
And it came to pass in those days, that she was sick, and died: whom when they had washed, they laid her in an upper chamber.
At that time, however, she became sick and died, and her body was washed and placed in an upper room.
And he said unto them, Ye know
how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a
Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.
He said to them, “You know
how unlawful it is for a
Jew to associate with a foreigner or visit him. But God has shown me that I should not call any man impure or unclean.
How God
anointed Jesus of
Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and
healing all that were
oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
how God
anointed Jesus of
Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, and
how Jesus went around doing good and
healing all who were
oppressed by the devil, because God was with Him.
And he shewed us
how he had seen an angel in his house, which stood and said unto him, Send men to
Joppa, and call for Simon, whose
surname is Peter;
He told us
how he had seen an angel standing in his house and saying, ‘Send to
Joppa for Simon who is called Peter.
Then remembered I the word of the Lord,
how that he said, John indeed
baptized with water; but ye shall be
baptized with the Holy Ghost.
Then I remembered the word of the Lord, as He used to say, ‘John
baptized with water, but you will be
baptized with the Holy Spirit.’
And when she knew Peter’s voice, she opened not the gate for
gladness, but ran in, and told
how Peter stood before the gate.
When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed that she
forgot to open the gate, but ran inside and
announced, “Peter is standing at the gate!”
But he,
beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them
how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go
shew these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place.
Peter motioned with his hand for silence, and he described how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. “Send word to James and to the brothers,” he said, and he left for another place.
And we declare unto you
glad tidings,
how that the promise which was made unto the fathers,
And now we
proclaim to you the good news: What God promised our fathers
But the Jews
stirred up the
devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and
Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts.
The Jews,
however, incited the religious women of prominence and the leading men of the city. They
stirred up persecution against Paul and
Barnabas and drove them out of their district.
Howbeit, as the disciples stood round about him, he rose up, and came into the city: and the next day he departed with
Barnabas to Derbe.
But after the disciples had gathered around him, he got up and went back into the city. And the next day he left with
Barnabas for Derbe.
And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they
rehearsed all that God had done with them, and
how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles.
When they arrived, they gathered the church together and reported all that God had done through them, and how He had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.
And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.
After much discussion, Peter got up and said to them, “Brothers, you know that in the early days God made a choice among you that the Gentiles would hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe.
Simeon hath declared
how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name.
Simon has told us how God first visited the Gentiles to take from them a people to be His own.
And some days after Paul said unto
Barnabas, Let us go again and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord, and see
how they do.
Some time later Paul said to
Barnabas, “Let us go back and visit the brothers in every town where we proclaimed the word of the Lord, to see
how they are doing.”
But the Jews which believed not, moved with
envy, took unto them certain
lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an
uproar, and
assaulted the house of
Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.
The Jews,
however, became
jealous. So they brought in some troublemakers from the marketplace, formed a
mob, and sent the city into an
uproar. They
raided Jason’s house in search of Paul and
Silas, hoping to bring them out to the people.
But some joined him and believed, including
Dionysius the
Areopagite, a woman named Damaris, and others who were with them.
And when the townclerk had
appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not
how that the city of the
Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess
Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?
Finally the city clerk quieted the crowd and declared, “Men of Ephesus, doesn’t
everyone know that the city of Ephesus is
guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of her image, which fell from heaven?
And when they were come to him, he said unto them, Ye know, from the first day that I came into Asia, after what manner I have been with you at all seasons,
When they came to him, he said, “You know how I lived the whole time I was with you, from the first day I arrived in the province of Asia.
And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house,
I did not
shrink back from declaring anything that was helpful to you as I taught you publicly and from house to house,
I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.
In everything, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus Himself: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”
And when they heard it, they
glorified the Lord, and said unto him, Thou seest, brother,
how many thousands of Jews there are which believe; and they are all
zealous of the law:
When they heard this, they
glorified God. Then they said to Paul, “You see, brother,
how many thousands of Jews have believed, and all of them are
zealous for the law.
And they that stood by said, Revilest thou God’s high priest?
But those standing nearby said, “
How dare you
insult the high priest of God!”
And when it was told me
how that the Jews laid wait for the man, I sent
straightway to thee, and gave commandment to his accusers also to say before thee what they had against him.
Farewell.
When I was informed that there was a plot against the man, I sent him to you at once. I also
instructed his accusers to present their case against him before you.
But this I
confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets:
I do
confess to you,
however, that I worship the God of our fathers according to the Way, which they call a sect. I believe everything that is laid down by the Law and written in the Prophets,
For if I be an
offender, or have committed any thing worthy of death, I refuse not to die: but if there be none of these things
whereof these
accuse me, no man may deliver me unto them. I appeal unto Caesar.
If, however, I am guilty of anything worthy of death, I do not refuse to die. But if there is no truth to their accusations against me, no one has the right to hand me over to them. I appeal to Caesar!”
And because I doubted of such manner of questions, I asked him whether he would go to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these matters.
Since I was at a loss as to
how to
investigate these matters, I asked if he was willing to go to Jerusalem and be tried there on these charges.
My manner of life from my youth, which was at the first among mine own nation at Jerusalem, know all the Jews;
Surely all the Jews know how I have lived from the earliest days of my youth, among my own people and in Jerusalem.
Howbeit we must be cast upon a certain island.
However, we must run
aground on some island.”
Howbeit they looked when he should have
swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but after they had looked a great while, and saw no
harm come to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.
The islanders were expecting him to swell up or suddenly drop dead. But after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god.
For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers;
God, whom I serve with my spirit in preaching the gospel of His Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you
Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that
oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles.
I do not want you to be unaware, brothers,
how often I
planned to come to you (but have been prevented from visiting until now), in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles.
God
forbid: for then
how shall God judge the world?
Certainly not! In that case, how could God judge the world?
For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my lie unto his glory; why yet am I also judged as a
sinner?
However, if my
falsehood accentuates God’s truthfulness, to the increase of His glory, why am I still condemned as a
sinner?
But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
However, to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the wicked, his faith is credited as righteousness.
In what
context was it credited? Was it after his
circumcision, or before? It was not after, but before.
Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
Therefore, since we have now been justified by His blood, how much more shall we be saved from wrath through Him!
For if, when we were enemies, we were
reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being
reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
For if, when we were enemies of God, we were
reconciled to Him through the death of His Son,
how much more, having been
reconciled, shall we be saved through His life!
But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.
But the gift is not like the
trespass. For if the many died by the
trespass of the one man,
how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many!
For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)
For if, by the
trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man,
how much more will those who receive an abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!
God
forbid.
How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
Certainly not! How can we who died to sin live in it any longer?
Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?
Do you not know, brothers (for I am speaking to those who know the law), that the law has authority over a man only as long as he lives?
For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh; for I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.
But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
You,
however, are
controlled not by the flesh, but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if
anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.
Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our
infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh
intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know how we ought to pray, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans too deep for words.
He that
spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all,
how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
He who did not
spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all,
how will He not also, along with Him, freely give us all things?
How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
How then can they call on the One in whom they have not believed? And
how can they believe in the One of whom they have not heard? And
how can they hear without someone to
preach?
And
how shall they
preach, except they be sent? as it is written,
How beautiful are the feet of them that
preach the gospel of peace, and bring
glad tidings of good things!
And
how can they
preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “
How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”
God hath not cast away his people which he
foreknew.
Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias?
how he maketh
intercession to God against Israel, saying,
God did not
reject His people, whom He
foreknew. Do you not know what the Scripture says about
Elijah,
how he appealed to God against Israel:
I say then, Have they
stumbled that they should fall? God
forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to
provoke them to jealousy.
I ask then, did they
stumble so as to fall beyond recovery? Certainly not!
However, because of their
trespass, salvation has come to the Gentiles to make Israel
jealous.
Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles;
how much more their
fulness?
But if their
trespass means riches for the world, and their failure means riches for the Gentiles,
how much greater riches will their fullness bring!
For if thou
wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and
wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive tree:
how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be graffed into their own olive tree?
For if you were cut from a wild olive tree, and contrary to nature were
grafted into one that is cultivated,
how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be
grafted into their own olive tree!
O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!
O, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments, and untraceable His ways!
Nevertheless, brethren, I have written the more boldly unto you in some sort, as putting you in mind, because of the grace that is given to me of God,
However, I have written you a bold reminder on some points, because of the grace God has given me
But now I go unto Jerusalem to minister unto the saints.
Now, however, I am on my way to Jerusalem to serve the saints there.
For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:
Brothers, consider the time of your calling: Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were powerful; not many were of noble birth.
Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to
nought:
Among the
mature,
however, we speak a message of wisdom—but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.
According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth
thereon. But let every man take
heed how he buildeth
thereupon.
By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an
expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one must be careful
how he builds.
But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged of you, or of man’s judgment:
yea, I judge not mine own self.
I care very little, however, if I am judged by you or by any human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself.
Now ye are full, now ye are rich, ye have reigned as kings without us: and I would to God ye did reign, that we also might reign with you.
Already you have all you want. Already you have become rich. Without us, you have become kings. How I wish you really were kings, so that we might be kings with you!
Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints?
If any of you has a
grievance against another,
how dare he go to law before the unrighteous instead of before the saints!
Know ye not that we shall judge angels?
how much more things that
pertain to this life?
Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life!
For what knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband? or how knowest thou, O man, whether thou shalt save thy wife?
How do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife?
But I would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord:
I want you to be free from
concern. The unmarried man is concerned about the work of the Lord,
how he can please the Lord.
But he that is married careth for the things that are of the world, how he may please his wife.
But the married man is concerned about the affairs of this world, how he can please his wife,
There is difference also between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit: but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband.
and his interests are divided. The unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the work of the Lord, how she can be holy in both body and spirit. But the married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world, how she can please her husband.
But if any man think that he behaveth himself uncomely toward his virgin, if she pass the flower of her age, and need so require, let him do what he will, he sinneth not: let them marry.
However, if someone thinks he is acting inappropriately toward his
betrothed, and if she is beyond her youth and they ought to marry, let him do as he wishes; he is not
sinning; they should get married.
But she is happier if she so
abide, after my judgment: and I think also that I have the Spirit of God.
In my judgment, however, she is happier if she remains as she is. And I think that I too have the Spirit of God.
Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the
idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an
idol; and their conscience being weak is
defiled.
But not
everyone has this knowledge. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that they eat such food as if it were sacrificed to an
idol. And since their conscience is weak, it is
defiled.
But take
heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.
Be careful,
however, that your freedom does not become a
stumbling block to the weak.
Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;
I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our forefathers were all under the cloud, and that they all passed through the sea.
Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.
In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman.
For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him;
howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men, but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries in the Spirit.
Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by
prophesying, or by doctrine?
Now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching?
And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or
harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds,
how shall it be known what is piped or
harped?
Even in the case of lifeless instruments, such as the
flute or
harp,
how will
anyone recognize the
tune they are playing unless the notes are distinct?
So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.
So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue,
how will
anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air.
Else when thou shalt
bless with the spirit,
how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say
Amen at thy giving of
thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?
Otherwise, if you speak a blessing in spirit,
how can someone who is
uninstructed say “
Amen” to your
thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying?
Brethren, be not children in understanding:
howbeit in
malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.
Brothers, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be
mature.
Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but
prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.
Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers, but for unbelievers. Prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers.
How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a
psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto
edifying.
What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together,
everyone has a
psalm or a teaching, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. All of these must be done to build up the church.
For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?
But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?
But some man will say, How are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come?
But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come?”
Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.
The spiritual, however, was not first, but the natural, and then the spiritual.
Now I will come unto you, when I shall pass through
Macedonia: for I do pass through
Macedonia.
After I go through
Macedonia,
however, I will come to you; for I will be going through
Macedonia.
For out of much
affliction and
anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be
grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you.
For through many tears I wrote you out of great distress and
anguish of heart, not to
grieve you but to let you know
how much I love you.
How shall not the
ministration of the spirit be rather glorious?
will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious?
For if the ministry of
condemnation was glorious,
how much more glorious is the ministry of righteousness!
For if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which remaineth is glorious.
For if what was
fading away came with glory,
how much greater is the glory of that which endures!
And his inward affection is more abundant toward you, whilst he remembereth the obedience of you all,
how with fear and
trembling ye received him.
And his affection for you is even greater when he remembers that you were all
obedient as you
welcomed him with fear and
trembling.
How that in a great trial of
affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their
liberality.
In the terrible
ordeal they suffered, their abundant joy and deep poverty overflowed into rich
generosity.
But we will not
boast of things without our measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even unto you.
We,
however, will not
boast beyond our limits, but only within the field of influence that God has assigned to us—a field that reaches even to you.
But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent
beguiled Eve through his
subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
I am afraid,
however, that just as
Eve was
deceived by the serpent’s
cunning, your minds may be led
astray from your simple and pure devotion to Christ.
I speak as concerning reproach, as though we had been weak.
Howbeit whereinsoever any is bold, (I speak
foolishly,) I am bold also.
How that he was caught up into
paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.
was caught up to
Paradise. The things he heard were too sacred for words, things that man is not permitted to tell.
Examine
yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own
selves. Know ye not your own
selves,
how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?
Examine
yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test
yourselves. Can’t you see for
yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you—unless you actually fail the test?
I
marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
I am
amazed how quickly you are deserting the One who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—
For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews’ religion,
how that beyond measure I
persecuted the church of God, and wasted it:
For you have heard of my former way of life in
Judaism,
how severely I
persecuted the church of God and tried to destroy it.
And was unknown by face unto the churches of Judaea which were in Christ:
I was personally unknown,
however, to the churches of
Judea that are in Christ.
