So now the
LORD God of Israel hath dispossessed the
Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess it?
Now since the
LORD, the God of Israel, has driven out the
Amorites from before His people Israel, should you now possess it?
Wilt not thou possess that which
Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So
whomsoever the
LORD our God shall drive out from before us, them will we possess.
Do you not possess whatever your god
Chemosh grants you? So also, we possess whatever the
LORD our God has granted us.
Wherefore I have not
sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: the
LORD the Judge be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of
Ammon.
I have not
sinned against you, but you have done me wrong by
waging war against me. May the
LORD, the Judge, decide
today between the Israelites and the
Ammonites.”
And
Jephthah vowed a
vow unto the
LORD, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of
Ammon into mine hands,
Then it shall be, that
whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of
Ammon, shall surely be the
LORD’S, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.
then whatever comes out the door of my house to
greet me on my
triumphant return from the
Ammonites will belong to the
LORD, and I will offer it up as a burnt offering.”
So
Jephthah passed over unto the children of
Ammon to fight against them; and the
LORD delivered them into his hands.
So
Jephthah crossed over to the
Ammonites to fight against them, and the
LORD delivered them into his hand.
And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said,
Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the
LORD, and I cannot go back.
As soon as
Jephthah saw her, he
tore his clothes and said, “No! Not my daughter! You have brought me to my knees! You have brought great misery upon me, for I have given my word to the
LORD and cannot take it back.”
And she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the
LORD, do to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth;
forasmuch as the
LORD hath taken
vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of
Ammon.
“My father,” she replied, “you have given your word to the
LORD. Do to me as you have said, for the
LORD has
avenged you of your enemies, the
Ammonites.”
And when I saw that ye delivered me not, I put my life in my hands, and passed over against the children of
Ammon, and the
LORD delivered them into my hand: wherefore then are ye come up unto me this day, to fight against me?
When I saw that you would not save me, I risked my life and crossed over to the
Ammonites, and the
LORD delivered them into my hand. Why then have you come
today to fight against me?”
And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD delivered them into the hand of the Philistines forty years.
Again the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD, so He delivered them into the hand of the Philistines for forty years.
And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son.
The angel of the LORD appeared to the woman and said to her, “It is true that you are barren and have no children; but you will conceive and give birth to a son.
Then
Manoah intreated the
LORD, and said, O my
Lord, let the man of God which thou
didst send come again unto us, and teach us what we shall do unto the child that shall be born.
Then
Manoah prayed to the
LORD, “Please, O
Lord, let the man of God You sent us come to us again to teach us how to raise the boy who is to be born.”
And the angel of the
LORD said unto
Manoah, Of all that I said unto the woman let her
beware.
So the angel of the
LORD answered
Manoah, “Your wife is to do everything I told her.
And
Manoah said unto the angel of the
LORD, I pray thee, let us
detain thee, until we shall have made ready a
kid for thee.
“Please stay here,”
Manoah said to the angel of the
LORD, “and we will prepare a young goat for you.”
And the angel of the
LORD said unto
Manoah, Though thou
detain me, I will not eat of thy bread: and if thou
wilt offer a burnt offering, thou must offer it unto the
LORD. For
Manoah knew not that he was an angel of the
LORD.
And the angel of the
LORD replied, “Even if I stay, I will not eat your food. But if you prepare a burnt offering, offer it to the
LORD.” For
Manoah did not know that it was the angel of the
LORD.
And
Manoah said unto the angel of the
LORD, What is thy name, that when thy sayings come to pass we may do thee honour?
Then
Manoah said to the angel of the
LORD, “What is your name, so that we may honor you when your word comes to pass?”
And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Why askest thou thus after my name, seeing it is secret?
“Why do you ask my name,” said the angel of the
LORD, “since it is beyond
comprehension?”
So
Manoah took a
kid with a meat offering, and offered it upon a rock unto the
LORD: and the angel did wonderously; and
Manoah and his wife looked on.
Then
Manoah took a young goat and a grain offering and offered them on a rock to the
LORD. And as
Manoah and his wife looked on, the
LORD did a
marvelous thing.
For it came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the angel of the
LORD ascended in the flame of the altar. And
Manoah and his wife looked on it, and fell on their faces to the ground.
When the flame went up from the altar to the sky, the angel of the
LORD ascended in the flame. When
Manoah and his wife saw this, they fell facedown to the ground.
But the angel of the
LORD did no more appear to
Manoah and to his wife. Then
Manoah knew that he was an angel of the
LORD.
And when the angel of the
LORD did not appear again to
Manoah and his wife,
Manoah realized that it had been the angel of the
LORD.
But his wife said unto him, If the LORD were pleased to kill us, he would not have received a burnt offering and a meat offering at our hands, neither would he have shewed us all these things, nor would as at this time have told us such things as these.
But his wife replied, “If the LORD had intended to kill us, He would not have accepted the burnt offering and the grain offering from our hands, nor would He have shown us all these things or spoken to us this way.”
And the woman bare a son, and called his name
Samson: and the child grew, and the
LORD blessed him.
So the woman gave birth to a son and named him
Samson. The boy grew, and the
LORD blessed him.
And the Spirit of the
LORD began to move him at times in the camp of
Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol.
And the Spirit of the
LORD began to
stir him at Mahaneh-
dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.
But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the LORD, that he sought an occasion against the Philistines: for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel.
(Now his father and mother did not know this was from the LORD, who was seeking an occasion to move against the Philistines; for at that time the Philistines were ruling over Israel.)
And the Spirit of the
LORD came
mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a
kid, and he had nothing in his hand: but he told not his father or his mother what he had done.
and the Spirit of the
LORD came powerfully upon him, and he
tore the lion apart with his bare hands as one would
tear a young goat. But he did not tell his father or mother what he had done.
And the Spirit of the
LORD came upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, and
slew thirty men of them, and took their
spoil, and gave change of garments unto them which
expounded the
riddle. And his anger was
kindled, and he went up to his father’s house.
Then the Spirit of the
LORD came
mightily upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, killed thirty of their men, took their
apparel, and gave their clothes to those who had
solved the
riddle. And burning with anger,
Samson returned to his father’s house,
And when he came unto Lehi, the Philistines
shouted against him: and the Spirit of the
LORD came
mightily upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands.
When
Samson arrived in Lehi, the Philistines came out
shouting against him. And the Spirit of the
LORD came
mightily upon him. The ropes on his arms became like burnt flax, and the bonds broke loose from his hands.
And the
lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and said unto her,
Entice him, and see wherein his great strength lieth, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to
afflict him: and we will give thee every one of us eleven hundred pieces of silver.
The
lords of the Philistines went to her and said, “
Entice him and find out the source of his great strength and how we can overpower him to
tie him up and
subdue him. Then each one of us will give you eleven hundred shekels of silver.”
Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven green withs which had not been dried, and she bound him with them.
So the
lords of the Philistines brought her seven fresh bowstrings that had not been dried, and she
tied him up with them.
And when
Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the
lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath shewed me all his heart. Then the
lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought money in their hand.
When
Delilah realized that he had revealed to her all that was in his heart, she sent this message to the
lords of the Philistines: “Come up once more, for he has revealed to me all that is in his heart.” Then the
lords of the Philistines came to her, bringing the money in their hands.
And she said, The Philistines be upon thee,
Samson. And he
awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and
shake myself. And he
wist not that the
LORD was departed from him.
Then she called out, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!” When
Samson awoke from his sleep, he thought, “I will escape as I did before and
shake myself free.” But he did not know that the
LORD had departed from him.
Then the
lords of the Philistines gathered them together for to offer a great sacrifice unto
Dagon their god, and to
rejoice: for they said, Our god hath delivered
Samson our enemy into our hand.
Now the
lords of the Philistines gathered together to offer a great sacrifice to their god
Dagon. They
rejoiced and said, “Our god has delivered
Samson our enemy into our hands.”
Now the house was full of men and women; and all the
lords of the Philistines were there; and there were upon the roof about three thousand men and women, that
beheld while
Samson made
sport.
Now the temple was full of men and women; all the
lords of the Philistines were there, and about three thousand men and women were on the roof watching
Samson entertain them.
And
Samson called unto the
LORD, and said, O
Lord GOD, remember me, I pray thee, and
strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once
avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.
Then
Samson called out to the
LORD: “O
Lord GOD, please remember me.
Strengthen me, O God, just once more, so that with one
vengeful blow I may pay back the Philistines for my two eyes.”
And
Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines. And he bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell upon the
lords, and upon all the people that were therein. So the dead which he
slew at his death were more than they which he
slew in his life.
Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines.” Then he pushed with all his might, and the temple fell on the
lords and all the people in it. So in his death he killed more than he had killed in his life.
And he said unto his mother, The eleven hundred shekels of silver that were taken from thee, about which thou cursedst, and spakest of also in mine ears, behold, the silver is with me; I took it. And his mother said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my son.
said to his mother, “The eleven hundred shekels of silver that were taken from you and about which I heard you utter a
curse—I have the silver here with me; I took it.” Then his mother said, “Blessed be my son by the
LORD!”
And when he had restored the eleven hundred shekels of silver to his mother, his mother said, I had wholly dedicated the silver unto the
LORD from my hand for my son, to make a
graven image and a
molten image: now therefore I will restore it unto thee.
And when he had returned the eleven hundred shekels of silver to his mother, she said, “I wholly
dedicate the silver to the
LORD for my son’s benefit, to make a
graven image and a
molten idol. Therefore I will now return it to you.”
Then said
Micah, Now know I that the
LORD will do me good, seeing I have a
Levite to my priest.
Then
Micah said, “Now I know that the
LORD will be good to me, because a
Levite has become my priest.”
And the priest said unto them, Go in peace: before the LORD is your way wherein ye go.
And the priest told them, “Go in peace. The LORD is watching over your journey.”
And he said unto him, We are passing from Bethlehemjudah toward the side of mount Ephraim; from thence am I: and I went to Bethlehemjudah, but I am now going to the house of the LORD; and there is no man that receiveth me to house.
The
Levite replied, “We are traveling from
Bethlehem in Judah to the remote hill country of Ephraim, where I am from. I went to
Bethlehem in Judah, and now I am going to the house of the
LORD; but no one has taken me into his home,
Then came the woman in the
dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man’s house where her
lord was, till it was light.
Early that morning, the woman went back to the house where her master was staying,
collapsed at the
doorway, and lay there until it was light.
And her
lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way: and, behold, the woman his
concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, and her hands were upon the
threshold.
In the morning, when her master got up and opened the doors of the house to go out on his journey, there was his
concubine,
collapsed in the
doorway of the house, with her hands on the
threshold.
Then all the children of Israel went out, and the congregation was gathered together as one man, from
Dan even to Beer-
sheba, with the land of
Gilead, unto the
LORD in Mizpeh.
Then all the Israelites from
Dan to
Beersheba and from the land of
Gilead came out, and the congregation assembled as one man before the
LORD at
Mizpah.
And the children of Israel arose, and went up to the house of God, and asked counsel of God, and said, Which of us shall go up first to the battle against the children of Benjamin? And the LORD said, Judah shall go up first.
The Israelites set out, went up to
Bethel, and inquired of God, “Who of us shall go up first to fight against the Benjamites?” “Judah will be first,” the
LORD replied.
(And the children of Israel went up and
wept before the
LORD until even, and asked counsel of the
LORD, saying, Shall I go up again to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother? And the
LORD said, Go up against him.)
They went up and
wept before the
LORD until evening, inquiring of Him, “Should we again draw near for battle against our brothers the Benjamites?” And the
LORD answered, “Go up against them.”
Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto the house of God, and
wept, and sat there before the
LORD, and fasted that day until even, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the
LORD.
Then the Israelites, all the people, went up to
Bethel, where they sat
weeping before the
LORD. That day they fasted until evening and presented burnt offerings and peace offerings to the
LORD.
And the children of Israel enquired of the LORD, (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,
And the Israelites inquired of the LORD. (In those days the ark of the covenant of God was there,
And
Phinehas, the son of
Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days,) saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease? And the
LORD said, Go up; for to
morrow I will deliver them into thine hand.
and
Phinehas son of
Eleazar, the son of Aaron, served before it.) The Israelites asked, “Should we again go out to battle against our brothers the Benjamites, or should we stop?” The
LORD answered, “Fight, for
tomorrow I will deliver them into your hand.”
And the
LORD smote Benjamin before Israel: and the children of Israel destroyed of the Benjamites that day twenty and five thousand and an hundred men: all these drew the sword.
The LORD defeated Benjamin in the presence of Israel, and on that day the Israelites slaughtered 25,100 Benjamites, all armed with swords.
And said, O LORD God of Israel, why is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be to day one tribe lacking in Israel?
“Why, O
LORD God of Israel,” they
cried out, “has this happened in Israel?
Today in Israel one tribe is missing!”
And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the congregation unto the LORD? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up to the LORD to Mizpeh, saying, He shall surely be put to death.
The Israelites asked, “Who among all the tribes of Israel did not come to the assembly before the
LORD?” For they had taken a solemn oath that
anyone who failed to come up before the
LORD at
Mizpah would surely be put to death.
How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing we have
sworn by the
LORD that we will not give them of our daughters to wives?
What should we do about wives for the survivors, since we have
sworn by the
LORD not to give them our daughters in marriage?”
And they said, What one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up to Mizpeh to the
LORD? And, behold, there came none to the camp from
Jabesh-
gilead to the assembly.
So they asked, “Which one of the tribes of Israel failed to come up before the
LORD at
Mizpah?” And, in fact, no one from
Jabesh-
gilead had come to the camp for the assembly.
And the people
repented them for Benjamin, because that the
LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.
The people
grieved for Benjamin, because the
LORD had made a void in the tribes of Israel.
Then they said, Behold, there is a feast of the
LORD in
Shiloh yearly in a place which is on the north side of
Bethel, on the east side of the
highway that goeth up from
Bethel to
Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.
“But look,” they said, “there is a yearly feast to the
LORD in
Shiloh, which is north of
Bethel east of the road that goes up from
Bethel to
Shechem, and south of Lebonah.”
Then she arose with her daughters in law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that the LORD had visited his people in giving them bread.
When
Naomi heard in Moab that the
LORD had attended to His people by providing them with food, she and her daughters-in-law prepared to leave the land of Moab.
And
Naomi said unto her two daughters in law, Go, return each to her mother’s house: the
LORD deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me.
Then
Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go back, each of you to your mother’s home. May the
LORD show you loving devotion, as you have shown to your dead and to me.
The
LORD grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband. Then she
kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and
wept.
May the
LORD enable each of you to find rest in the home of your new husband.” And she
kissed them as they
wept aloud Would ye
tarry for them till they were grown? would ye stay for them from having husbands?
nay, my daughters; for it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the
LORD is gone out against me.
would you wait for them to grow up? Would you
refrain from having husbands? No, my daughters, it grieves me very much for your sakes that the hand of the
LORD has gone out against me.”
Where thou
diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the
LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.
Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the
LORD punish me, and ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me.”
I went out full, and the
LORD hath brought me home again empty: why then call ye me
Naomi, seeing the
LORD hath
testified against me, and the
Almighty hath
afflicted me?
I went away full, but the
LORD has brought me back empty. Why call me
Naomi? After all, the
LORD has
testified against me, and the
Almighty has
afflicted me.”
And behold, Boaz came from
Bethlehem, and said unto the reapers, The
LORD be with you. And they answered him, The
LORD bless thee.
Just then Boaz arrived from
Bethlehem and said to the harvesters, “The
LORD be with you.” “The
LORD bless you,” they replied.
The
LORD recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the
LORD God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust.
May the LORD repay your work, and may you receive a rich reward from the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have taken refuge.”
Then she said, Let me find favour in thy sight, my
lord; for that thou hast comforted me, and for that thou hast spoken friendly unto thine
handmaid, though I be not like unto one of thine handmaidens.
“My
lord,” she said, “may I continue to find favor in your eyes, for you have comforted and spoken kindly to your
maidservant, though I am not like one of your servant girls.”
And
Naomi said unto her daughter in law, Blessed be he of the
LORD, who hath not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead. And
Naomi said unto her, The man is near of
kin unto us, one of our next
kinsmen.
Then
Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, “May he be blessed by the
LORD, who has not withdrawn His kindness from the living or the dead.”
Naomi continued, “The man is a close relative. He is one of our
kinsman-redeemers.”
And he said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my daughter: for thou hast shewed more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou followedst not young men, whether poor or rich.
Then Boaz said, “May the
LORD bless you, my daughter. You have shown more kindness now than before, because you have not run after the younger men, whether rich or poor.
Tarry this night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will perform unto thee the part of a
kinsman, well; let him do the
kinsman’s part: but if he will not do the part of a
kinsman to thee, then will I do the part of a
kinsman to thee, as the
LORD liveth: lie down until the morning.
Stay here
tonight, and in the morning, if he wants to
redeem you, good. Let him
redeem you. But if he does not want to
redeem you, as surely as the
LORD lives, I will. Now lie here until morning.”
And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The
LORD make the woman that is come into thine house like
Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou
worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in
Bethlehem:
“We are witnesses,” said the elders and all the people at the gate. “May the
LORD make the woman entering your home like
Rachel and Leah, who together built up the house of Israel. May you be prosperous in Ephrathah and famous in
Bethlehem.
And let thy house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bare unto Judah, of the seed which the LORD shall give thee of this young woman.
And may your house become like the house of
Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, because of the offspring the
LORD will give you by this young woman.”
So Boaz took
Ruth, and she was his wife: and when he went in unto her, the
LORD gave her conception, and she bare a son.
So Boaz took
Ruth, and she became his wife. And when he had relations with her, the
LORD enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son.
And the women said unto
Naomi, Blessed be the
LORD, which hath not left thee this day without a
kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel.
Then the women said to
Naomi, “Blessed be the
LORD, who has not left you this day without a
kinsman-
redeemer. May his name become famous in Israel.
And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto the
LORD of hosts in
Shiloh. And the two sons of
Eli,
Hophni and
Phinehas, the priests of the
LORD, were there.
Year after year Elkanah would go up from his city to worship and sacrifice to the
LORD of Hosts at
Shiloh, where
Eli’s two sons,
Hophni and
Phinehas, were priests to the
LORD.
But unto
Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved
Hannah: but the
LORD had shut up her
womb.
But to
Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved her even though the
LORD had closed her
womb.
And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the
LORD, so she
provoked her; therefore she
wept, and did not eat.
And this went on year after year. Whenever
Hannah went up to the house of the
LORD, her rival
taunted her until she
wept and would not eat.
So
Hannah rose up after they had eaten in
Shiloh, and after they had
drunk. Now
Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of the
LORD.
So after they had finished eating and drinking in
Shiloh,
Hannah stood up. Now
Eli the priest was sitting on a chair by the
doorpost of the temple of the
LORD.
And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the
LORD, and
wept sore.
In her bitter distress,
Hannah prayed to the
LORD and
wept with many tears.
And she
vowed a
vow, and said, O
LORD of hosts, if thou
wilt indeed look on the
affliction of thine
handmaid, and remember me, and not
forget thine
handmaid, but
wilt give unto thine
handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the
LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no
razor come upon his head.
And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the
LORD, that
Eli marked her mouth.
As
Hannah kept on praying before the
LORD,
Eli watched her mouth.
And
Hannah answered and said, No, my
lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have
drunken neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the
LORD.
“No, my
lord,”
Hannah replied. “I am a woman
oppressed in spirit. I have not had any wine or strong drink, but I have poured out my soul before the
LORD.
And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the
LORD, and returned, and came to their house to
Ramah: and Elkanah knew
Hannah his wife; and the
LORD remembered her.
The next morning Elkanah and
Hannah got up early to bow in worship before the
LORD, and then returned home to
Ramah. And Elkanah had relations with his wife
Hannah, and the
LORD remembered her.
Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after
Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the
LORD.
So in the course of time,
Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked for him from the
LORD.”
And the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer unto the
LORD the yearly sacrifice, and his
vow.
Then Elkanah and all his house went up to make the annual sacrifice to the
LORD and to
fulfill his
vow,
But
Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be
weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the
LORD, and there
abide for ever.
but
Hannah did not go. “After the boy is
weaned,” she said to her husband, “I will take him to appear before the
LORD and to stay there permanently.”
And Elkanah her husband said unto her, Do what seemeth thee good;
tarry until thou have
weaned him; only the
LORD establish his word. So the woman abode, and gave her son
suck until she
weaned him.
“Do what you think is best,” her husband Elkanah replied, “and stay here until you have
weaned him. Only may the
LORD confirm His word.” So
Hannah stayed and
nursed her son until she had
weaned him.
And when she had
weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one
ephah of flour, and a
bottle of wine, and brought him unto the house of the
LORD in
Shiloh: and the child was young.
Once she had
weaned him,
Hannah took the boy with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an
ephah of flour, and a skin of wine. Though the boy was still young, she brought him to the house of the
LORD at
Shiloh.
And she said, Oh my lord, as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the LORD.
“Please, my
lord,” said
Hannah, “as surely as you live, my
lord, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the
LORD.
For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him:
I prayed for this boy, and since the LORD has granted me what I asked of Him,
Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshipped the LORD there.
I now
dedicate the boy to the
LORD. For as long as he lives, he is dedicated to the
LORD.” So they worshiped the
LORD there.
And
Hannah prayed, and said, My heart rejoiceth in the
LORD, mine horn is
exalted in the
LORD: my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I
rejoice in thy salvation.
At that time
Hannah prayed: “My heart rejoices in the
LORD in whom my horn is
exalted. My mouth speaks boldly against my enemies, for I
rejoice in Your salvation.
There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God.
There is no one holy like the LORD. Indeed, there is no one besides You! And there is no Rock like our God.
Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not
arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the
LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are
weighed.
Do not
boast so proudly, or let
arrogance come from your mouth, for the
LORD is a God who knows, and by Him actions are
weighed.
The LORD killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up.
The
LORD brings death and gives life; He brings down to
Sheol and raises up.
The LORD maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, and lifteth up.
The LORD sends poverty and wealth; He humbles and He exalts.
He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the
beggar from the
dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them
inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the
LORD’S, and he hath set the world upon them.
He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the
needy from the ash
heap. He seats them among princes and bestows on them a throne of honor. For the foundations of the earth are the
LORD’s, and upon them He has set the world.
The
adversaries of the
LORD shall be broken to pieces; out of heaven shall he
thunder upon them: the
LORD shall judge the ends of the earth; and he shall give strength unto his king, and
exalt the horn of his
anointed.
Those who
oppose the
LORD will be
shattered. He will
thunder from heaven against them. The
LORD will judge the ends of the earth and will give power to His king. He will
exalt the horn of His
anointed.”
And Elkanah went to
Ramah to his house. And the child did minister unto the
LORD before
Eli the priest.
Then Elkanah went home to
Ramah, but the boy began ministering to the
LORD before
Eli the priest.
Now the sons of
Eli were sons of
Belial; they knew not the
LORD.
Now the sons of
Eli were wicked men; they had no regard for the
LORD
