And he said unto him, Fear not: for the hand of Saul my father shall not find thee; and thou shalt be king over Israel, and I shall be next unto thee; and that also Saul my father knoweth.
saying, “Do not be afraid, for my father Saul will never lay a hand on you. And you will be king over Israel, and I will be your second-in-command. Even my father Saul knows this is true.”
And David arose, and came to the place where Saul had pitched: and David
beheld the place where Saul
lay, and
Abner the son of
Ner, the captain of his host: and Saul
lay in the
trench, and the people pitched round about him.
Then David set out and went to the place where Saul had camped. He saw the place where Saul and
Abner son of
Ner, the general of his army, had
lain down. Saul was lying inside the inner circle of the camp, with the troops camped around him.
So David and
Abishai came to the people by night: and, behold, Saul
lay sleeping within the
trench, and his
spear stuck in the ground at his
bolster: but
Abner and the people
lay round about him.
That night David and
Abishai came to the troops, and Saul was lying there
asleep in the inner circle of the camp, with his
spear stuck in the ground by his head. And
Abner and the troops were lying around him.
And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath cut off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land: wherefore then
layest thou a
snare for my life, to cause me to die?
But the woman replied, “Surely you know what Saul has done, how he has killed the mediums and spiritists in the land. Why have you set a
trap to get me killed?”
And
Abner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and
lay thee hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armour. But
Asahel would not turn aside from following of him.
And the sons of
Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, went, and came about the heat of the day to the house of
Ish-bosheth, who
lay on a bed at
noon.
Now Rechab and Baanah, the sons of
Rimmon the Beerothite, set out and arrived at the house of
Ish-bosheth in the heat of the day, while the king was taking his
midday nap.
For when they came into the house, he
lay on his bed in his
bedchamber, and they
smote him, and
slew him, and
beheaded him, and took his head, and
gat them away through the plain all night.
They had entered the house while
Ish-bosheth was lying on his bed, and having
stabbed and killed him, they
beheaded him, took his head, and traveled all night by way of the Arabah.
And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he
lay with her; for she was
purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house.
Then David sent messengers to get her, and when she came to him, he
slept with her. (Now she had just
purified herself from her uncleanness.) Then she returned home.
But the poor man had nothing, save one little
ewe lamb, which he had bought and
nourished up: and it grew up together with him, and with his children; it did eat of his own meat, and
drank of his own cup, and
lay in his
bosom, and was unto him as a daughter.
but the poor man had nothing except one small
ewe lamb that he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It shared his food and
drank from his cup; it
slept in his arms and was like a daughter to him.
David therefore
besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and
lay all night upon the earth.
David
pleaded with God for the boy. He fasted and went into his house and spent the night lying in
sackcloth on the ground.
And David comforted Bath-
sheba his wife, and went in unto her, and
lay with her: and she bare a son, and he called his name Solomon: and the LORD loved him.
Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba, and he went to her and lay with her. So she gave birth to a son, and they named him Solomon. Now the LORD loved the child
Now therefore gather the rest of the people together, and
encamp against the city, and take it: lest I take the city, and it be called after my name.
Now, therefore,
assemble the rest of the troops,
lay siege to the city, and capture it. Otherwise I will capture the city, and it will be named after me.”
And Jonadab said unto him,
Lay thee down on thy bed, and make
thyself sick: and when thy father cometh to see thee, say unto him, I pray thee, let my sister Tamar come, and give me meat, and dress the meat in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it at her hand.
Jonadab told him, “Lie down on your bed and pretend you are ill. When your father comes to see you, say to him, ‘Please let my sister Tamar come and give me something to eat. Let her prepare it in my sight so I may watch her and eat it from her hand.’”
So Amnon lay down, and made himself sick: and when the king was come to see him, Amnon said unto the king, I pray thee, let Tamar my sister come, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat at her hand.
So Amnon
lay down and
feigned illness. When the king came to see him, Amnon said, “Please let my sister Tamar come and make a couple of cakes in my sight, so that I may eat from her hand.”
Howbeit he would not
hearken unto her voice: but, being stronger than she, forced her, and
lay with her.
But Amnon refused to
listen to her, and being stronger, he
violated her and
lay with her.
Then the king arose, and
tare his garments, and
lay on the earth; and all his servants stood by with their clothes rent.
Then the king stood up,
tore his clothes, and
lay down on the ground; and all his servants stood by with their clothes
torn.
Now Barzillai was a very aged man, even
fourscore years old: and he had provided the king of
sustenance while he
lay at
Mahanaim; for he was a very great man.
Barzillai was quite old, eighty years of age, and since he was a very wealthy man, he had provided for the king while he stayed in
Mahanaim.
And the king commanded, and they brought great stones, costly stones, and
hewed stones, to
lay the foundation of the house.

quarry large, costly stones to

And it was covered with
cedar above upon the beams, that
lay on forty five pillars, fifteen in a row.
The house was roofed with
cedar above the beams that rested on the pillars—forty-five beams, fifteen per row.
And it came to pass, when king
Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had
cried against the altar in
Bethel, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying,
Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him.
Now when King
Jeroboam, who was at the altar in
Bethel, heard the word that the man of God had
cried out against it, he stretched out his hand and said, “Seize him!” But the hand he stretched out toward him
withered, so that he could not pull it back.
And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he spake to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then
bury me in the
sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried;
lay my bones beside his bones:
After he had buried him, the prophet said to his sons, “When I die, you must
bury me in the tomb where the man of God is buried.
Lay my bones beside his bones,
Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one
bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and
lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other
bullock, and
lay it on wood, and put no fire under:
Get two bulls for us. Let the prophets of
Baal choose one bull for themselves, cut it into pieces, and place it on the wood but not light the fire. And I will prepare the other bull and place it on the wood but not light the fire.
And as he
lay and
slept under a
juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat.
Then he
lay down under the
broom tree and fell
asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.”
And he looked, and, behold, there was a
cake baken on the coals, and a
cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again.
And he looked around, and there by his head was a
cake of bread
baked over hot coals, and a
jar of water. So he
ate and
drank and
lay down again.
And
Ahab came into his house heavy and displeased because of the word which
Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him: for he had said, I will not give thee the inheritance of my fathers. And he laid him down upon his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no bread.
So
Ahab went to his palace,
sullen and
angry because
Naboth the Jezreelite had told him, “I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers.” He
lay down on his bed, turned his face away, and refused to eat.
And it came to pass, when
Ahab heard those words, that he rent his clothes, and put
sackcloth upon his flesh, and fasted, and
lay in
sackcloth, and went softly.
And it fell on a day, that he came thither, and he turned into the chamber, and lay there.
One day
Elisha came to visit and went to his upper room to lie down.
Then he said to Gehazi,
Gird up thy loins, and take my staff in thine hand, and go thy way: if thou meet any man,
salute him not; and if any
salute thee, answer him not again: and
lay my staff upon the face of the child.
So
Elisha said to Gehazi, “
Tie up your garment, take my staff in your hand, and go! If you meet
anyone, do not
greet him, and if
anyone greets you, do not answer him. Then
lay my staff on the boy’s face.”
And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and he stretched himself upon the child; and the flesh of the child waxed warm.
Then
Elisha got on the bed and
lay on the boy, mouth to mouth, eye to eye, and hand to hand. As he stretched himself out over him, the boy’s body became warm.
And there came a
messenger, and told him, saying, They have brought the heads of the king’s sons. And he said,
Lay ye them in two heaps at the entering in of the gate until the morning.
When the
messenger arrived, he told
Jehu, “They have brought the heads of the sons of the king.” And
Jehu ordered, “Pile them in two heaps at the entrance of the gate until morning.”
Hast thou not heard long ago how I have done it, and of ancient times that I have formed it? now have I brought it to pass, that thou shouldest be to
lay waste
fenced cities into
ruinous heaps.
Have you not heard? Long ago I ordained it; in days of old I
planned it. Now I have brought it to pass, that you should
crush fortified cities into piles of
rubble.
Thus
Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but
slew his son. And when he died, he said, The LORD look upon it, and require it.
Thus King
Joash failed to remember the kindness that
Zechariah’s father Jehoiada had extended to him. Instead,
Joash killed Jehoiada’s son. As he
lay dying,
Zechariah said, “May the LORD see this and call you to account.”
In the third month they began to lay the foundation of the heaps, and finished them in the seventh month.
In the third month they began building up the heaps, and they finished in the seventh month.
And stand in the holy place according to the divisions of the families of the fathers of your brethren the people, and after the division of the families of the Levites.
Moreover, stand in the Holy Place by the divisions of the families of your
kinsmen the
lay people, and by the divisions of the families of the Levites.
To fulfil the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths: for as long as she
lay desolate she kept sabbath, to fulfil
threescore and ten years.
So the land enjoyed its Sabbath rest all the days of the
desolation, until seventy years were completed, in
fulfillment of the word of the LORD through Jeremiah.
With three rows of great stones, and a row of new timber: and let the expences be given out of the king’s house:
with three layers of cut stones and one of timbers. The costs are to be paid from the royal treasury.
Then we departed from the river of
Ahava on the
twelfth day of the first month, to go unto Jerusalem: and the hand of our God was upon us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy, and of such as
lay in wait by the way.
On the
twelfth day of the first month we set out from the
Ahava Canal to go to Jerusalem, and the hand of our God was upon us to protect us from the hands of the enemies and
bandits along the way.
Then I
testified against them, and said unto them, Why
lodge ye about the wall? if ye do so again, I will
lay hands on you. From that time forth came they no more on the sabbath.
but I
warned them, “Why are you camping in front of the wall? If you do it again, I will
lay hands on you.” From that time on, they did not return on the Sabbath.
In those days, while
Mordecai sat in the king’s gate, two of the king’s chamberlains, Bigthan and Teresh, of those which kept the door, were
wroth, and sought to
lay hand on the king
Ahasuerus.
And he thought
scorn to
lay hands on
Mordecai alone; for they had shewed him the people of
Mordecai: wherefore
Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of
Ahasuerus, even the people of
Mordecai.
And when he learned the identity of
Mordecai’s people, he
scorned the notion of
laying hands on
Mordecai alone. Instead, he sought to destroy all of
Mordecai’s people, the Jews, throughout the kingdom of
Xerxes.
In every province to which the king’s command and edict came, there was great
mourning among the Jews. They fasted,
wept, and
lamented, and many
lay in
sackcloth and ashes.
And it was found written, that
Mordecai had told of Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king’s chamberlains, the keepers of the door, who sought to
lay hand on the king
Ahasuerus.
And there it was found recorded that
Mordecai had exposed Bigthana and Teresh, two of the eunuchs who guarded the king’s entrance, when they had
conspired to
assassinate King
Xerxes.
The Jews gathered themselves together in their cities throughout all the provinces of the king
Ahasuerus, to
lay hand on such as sought their
hurt: and no man could
withstand them; for the fear of them fell upon all people.
In each of the provinces of King
Xerxes, the Jews assembled in their cities to attack those who sought to
harm them. No man could
withstand them, because the fear of them had fallen upon all peoples.
The ten sons of
Haman the son of Hammedatha, the enemy of the Jews,
slew they; but on the
spoil laid they not their hand.
They killed these ten sons of
Haman son of Hammedatha, the enemy of the Jews, but they did not
lay a hand on the
plunder.
For the Jews that were in
Shushan gathered themselves together on the
fourteenth day also of the month
Adar, and
slew three hundred men at
Shushan; but on the prey they laid not their hand.
On the
fourteenth day of the month of
Adar, the Jews in
Susa came together again and put to death three hundred men there, but they did not
lay a hand on the
plunder.
But the other Jews that were in the king’s provinces gathered themselves together, and stood for their lives, and had rest from their enemies, and
slew of their foes seventy and five thousand, but they laid not their hands on the prey,
The rest of the Jews in the royal provinces also assembled to defend themselves and rid themselves of their enemies. They killed 75,000 who
hated them, but they did not
lay a hand on the
plunder.
And the LORD said unto
Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So
Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.
“Very well,” said the LORD to
Satan. “Everything he has is in your hands, but you must not
lay a hand on the man himself.” Then
Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.
I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause:
However, if I were you, I would appeal to God and lay my cause before Him—
Neither is there any
daysman betwixt us, that might
lay his hand upon us both.
Nor is there a
mediator between us, to
lay his hand upon us both.
Lay down now, put me in a
surety with thee; who is he that will strike hands with me?
Mark me, and be
astonished, and
lay your hand upon your mouth.
Look at me and be
appalled; put your hand over your mouth.
God layeth up his iniquity for his children: he rewardeth him, and he shall know it.
It is said that God lays up one’s punishment for his children. Let God repay the man himself, so he will know it.
Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.
Receive instruction from His mouth, and lay up His words in your heart.
Then shalt thou
lay up gold as dust, and the gold of
Ophir as the stones of the
brooks.
and
consign your gold to the dust and the gold of
Ophir to the stones of the ravines,
Men
groan from out of the city, and the soul of the wounded crieth out: yet God
layeth not folly to them.
From the city, men
groan, and the souls of the wounded cry out, yet God charges no one with
wrongdoing.
He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver.
what he lays up, the righteous will wear, and his silver will be divided by the innocent.
My root was spread out by the waters, and the
dew lay all night upon my branch.
My roots will spread out to the waters, and the
dew will rest nightly on my branches.
Upon my right hand rise the youth; they
push away my feet, and they raise up against me the ways of their destruction.
The
rabble arises at my right; they
lay snares for my feet and build siege ramps against me.
For he will not lay upon man more than right; that he should enter into judgment with God.
For God need not examine a man further or have him approach for judgment.
That the
hypocrite reign not, lest the people be ensnared.
that godless men should not rule or lay snares for the people.
Behold, I am
vile; what shall I answer thee? I will
lay mine hand upon my mouth.
“Behold, I am insignificant. How can I reply to You? I place my hand over my mouth.
Lay thine hand upon him, remember the battle, do no more.
If you
lay a hand on him, you will remember the battle and never
repeat it!
The sword that reaches him has no effect, nor does the
spear or
dart or
arrow.
I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.
I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.
My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.
In the morning, O LORD, You hear my voice; at
daybreak I
lay my
plea before You and wait in expectation.
Let the enemy
persecute my soul, and take it;
yea, let him
tread down my life upon the earth, and
lay mine honour in the dust.
Selah.
then may my enemy pursue me and overtake me; may he
trample me to the ground and leave my honor in the dust.
Selah Put them in fear, O LORD: that the nations may know themselves to be but men.
Selah.
Lay terror upon them, O LORD; let the nations know they are but men.
Selah My strength is dried up like a
potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.
My strength is dried up like a
potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth. You
lay me in the dust of death.
He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an
heap: he
layeth up the depth in storehouses.
He piles up the waters of the sea; He puts the depths into storehouses.
They also that seek after my life
lay snares for me: and they that seek my
hurt speak
mischievous things, and imagine deceits all the day long.
Those who seek my life
lay snares; those who wish me
harm speak destruction,
plotting deceit all day long.
They
encourage themselves in an evil matter: they commune of
laying snares
privily; they say, Who shall see them?
They hold fast to their evil purpose; they speak of hiding their snares. “Who will see them?” they say.
For mine enemies speak against me; and they that lay wait for my soul take counsel together,
For my enemies speak against me, and those who lie in wait for my life
conspire,
Yea, the
sparrow hath found an house, and the
swallow a nest for herself, where she may
lay her young, even thine altars, O LORD of hosts, my King, and my God.
Even the
sparrow has found a home, and the
swallow a nest for herself, where she places her young near Your altars, O LORD of Hosts, my King and my God.
Who
layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters: who maketh the clouds his
chariot: who walketh upon the wings of the wind:
laying the beams of His chambers in the waters above, making the clouds His
chariot, walking on the wings of the wind.
The sun ariseth, they gather themselves together, and lay them down in their dens.
The sun rises, and they withdraw; they lie down in their dens.
If they say, Come with us, let us
lay wait for blood, let us
lurk privily for the innocent without cause:
If they say, “Come along, let us lie in wait for blood, let us
ambush the innocent without cause,
And they
lay wait for their own blood; they
lurk privily for their own lives.
But they lie in wait for their own blood; they
ambush their own lives.
He
layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a
buckler to them that walk uprightly.
He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk with
integrity,
She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.
She is a tree of life to those who embrace her, and those who lay hold of her are blessed.
He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.
he taught me and said, “Let your heart lay hold of my words; keep my commands and you will live.
My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee.
My son, keep my words and
treasure my commandments within you.
Wise men
lay up knowledge: but the mouth of the
foolish is near destruction.
The wise store up knowledge, but the mouth of the
fool invites destruction.
Every
prudent man dealeth with knowledge: but a
fool layeth open his folly.
Every
prudent man acts with knowledge, but a
fool displays his folly.
Lay not wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous;
spoil not his resting place:
Do not lie in wait, O wicked man, near the dwelling of the righteous; do not destroy his resting place.
He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and
layeth up
deceit within him;
A
hateful man disguises himself with his speech, but he
lays up
deceit in his heart.
He that by
usury and unjust gain increaseth his substance, he shall gather it for him that will
pity the poor.
He who increases his wealth by interest and
usury lays it up for one who is kind to the poor.
If thou hast done
foolishly in lifting up
thyself, or if thou hast thought evil,
lay thine hand upon thy mouth.
She stretches out her hands to the
distaff and grasps the
spindle with her fingers.
I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine, yet
acquainting mine heart with wisdom; and to
lay hold on folly, till I might see what was that good for the sons of men, which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life.
I sought to
cheer my body with wine and to embrace folly—my mind still guiding me with wisdom—until I could see what was
worthwhile for men to do under heaven during the few days of their lives.
So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were
oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter.
Again I looked, and I considered all the oppression taking place under the sun. I saw the tears of the
oppressed, and they had no comforter; the power
lay in the hands of their oppressors, and there was no comforter.
It is better to go to the house of
mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will
lay it to his heart.
It is better to enter a house of
mourning than a house of feasting, since death is the end of every man, and the living should take this to heart.
If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for yielding pacifieth great offences.
If the ruler’s temper flares against you, do not
abandon your post, for calmness
lays great offenses to rest.
And I will
lay it waste: it shall not be
pruned, nor
digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.
I will make it a wasteland, neither
pruned nor cultivated, and thorns and briers will grow up. I will command the clouds that rain shall not fall on it.”
Woe unto them that join house to house, that
lay field to field, till there be no place, that they may be placed alone in the midst of the earth!
Woe to you who add house to house and join field to field until no place is left and you live alone in the land.
Therefore is the anger of the LORD
kindled against his people, and he hath stretched forth his hand against them, and hath
smitten them: and the hills did
tremble, and their carcases were
torn in the midst of the streets. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
Therefore the anger of the LORD burns against His people; His hand is raised against them to strike them down. The mountains
quake, and the corpses
lay like refuse in the streets.
Despite all this, His anger is not turned away; His hand is still upraised.
Their
roaring shall be like a lion, they shall
roar like young lions:
yea, they shall
roar, and
lay hold of the prey, and shall carry it away safe, and none shall deliver it.
Their
roaring is like that of a lion; they
roar like young lions. They
growl and seize their prey; they carry it away from
deliverance.
But they shall fly upon the shoulders of the Philistines toward the west; they shall
spoil them of the east together: they shall
lay their hand upon
Edom and Moab; and the children of
Ammon shall obey them.
They will
swoop down on the slopes of the Philistines to the west; together they will
plunder the sons of the east. They will
lay their hands on
Edom and Moab, and the
Ammonites will be subject to them.
Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to
lay the land
desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it.
Behold, the Day of the LORD is coming— cruel, with
fury and burning anger— to make the earth a
desolation and to destroy the sinners within it.
And I will
punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the
arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will
lay low the
haughtiness of the terrible.
