And he ran unto
Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not;
lie down again. And he went and lay down.
He ran to
Eli and said, “Here I am, for you have called me.” “I did not call,”
Eli replied. “Go back and
lie down.” So he went and lay down.
And the LORD called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to
Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou
didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son;
lie down again.
Once again the LORD called, “Samuel!” So Samuel got up, went to
Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you have called me.” “My son, I did not call,”
Eli replied. “Go back and
lie down.”
Therefore
Eli said unto Samuel, Go,
lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
“Go and
lie down,” he said to Samuel, “and if He calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for Your servant is
listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
And also the Strength of Israel will not
lie nor
repent: for he is not a man, that he should
repent.

That all of you have
conspired against me, and there is none that sheweth me that my son hath made a league with the son of
Jesse, and there is none of you that is
sorry for me, or sheweth unto me that my son hath
stirred up my servant against me, to
lie in wait, as at this day?
Is that why all of you have
conspired against me? Not one of you told me that my own son had made a covenant with the son of
Jesse. Not one of you has shown
concern for me or revealed to me that my son has
stirred up my own servant to
lie in wait against me, as is the case
today.”
And Saul said unto him, Why have ye
conspired against me, thou and the son of
Jesse, in that thou hast given him bread, and a sword, and hast enquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to
lie in wait, as at this day?
And Saul asked him, “Why have you and the son of
Jesse conspired against me? You gave him bread and a sword and inquired of God for him so that he could rise up against me to
lie in wait, as he is doing
today.”
The beauty of Israel is slain upon thy high places: how are the mighty fallen!
“Your glory, O Israel, lies slain on your heights. How the mighty have fallen!
How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! O
Jonathan, thou
wast slain in thine high places.
How the mighty have fallen in the thick of battle!
Jonathan lies slain on your heights.
Joab also and
Abishai pursued after
Abner: and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, that
lieth before Giah by the way of the wilderness of
Gibeon.
But
Joab and
Abishai pursued
Abner. By
sunset, they had gone as far as the hill of Ammah opposite Giah on the way to the wilderness of
Gibeon.
And he
smote Moab, and measured them with a line, casting them down to the ground; even with two lines measured he to put to death, and with one full line to keep alive. And so the Moabites became David’s servants, and brought gifts.
David also defeated the Moabites, made them
lie down on the ground, and measured them off with a cord. He measured off with two lengths those to be put to death, and with one length those to be
spared. So the Moabites became subject to David and brought him tribute.
And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah,
abide in tents; and my lord
Joab, and the servants of my lord, are
encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to
lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.
Uriah answered, “The ark and Israel and Judah are dwelling in tents, and my master
Joab and his soldiers are camped in the open field. How can I go to my house to eat and drink and sleep with my wife? As surely as you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do such a thing!”
And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him
drunk: and at even he went out to
lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house.

drunk. And in the evening Uriah went out to
lie down on his
cot with his master’s servants, but he did not go home.

adversity against you from your own house. Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to another, and he will
lie with them in broad
daylight.
And Jonadab said unto him, Lay thee down on thy bed, and make
thyself sick: and when thy father cometh to see thee, say unto him, I pray thee, let my sister Tamar come, and give me meat, and dress the meat in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it at her hand.
Jonadab told him, “Lie down on your bed and pretend you are ill. When your father comes to see you, say to him, ‘Please let my sister Tamar come and give me something to eat. Let her prepare it in my sight so I may watch her and eat it from her hand.’”
And when she had brought them unto him to eat, he took hold of her, and said unto her, Come lie with me, my sister.

But the man that shall touch them must be
fenced with iron and the staff of a
spear; and they shall be utterly burned with fire in the same place.
The man who touches them must be armed with iron or with the shaft of a
spear. The fire burns them to ashes in the place where they
lie.”

Gad and Jazer.
Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let there be sought for my lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before the king, and let her
cherish him, and let her
lie in thy
bosom, that my lord the king may get heat.
So his servants said to him, “Let us search for a young virgin for our lord the king, to attend to him and care for him and lie by his side to keep him warm.”
He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he
lied unto him.
Then the prophet replied, “I too am a prophet like you, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the LORD, saying, ‘Bring him back with you to your house, so that he may eat bread and drink water.’” The old prophet was lying to him,

One day
Elisha came to visit and went to his upper room to
lie down.

Nay, my lord, thou man of God, do not
lie unto thine
handmaid.
And
Elisha declared, “At this time next year, you will hold a son in your arms.” “No, my lord,” she said. “Do not
lie to your
maidservant, O man of God.”
And they said, It is false; tell us now. And he said, Thus and thus spake he to me, saying, Thus saith the LORD, I have
anointed thee king over Israel.

lie!” they said. “Tell us now!” So

anoint you king over Israel.’”
And the
carcase of
Jezebel shall be as dung upon the face of the field in the portion of
Jezreel; so that they shall not say, This is
Jezebel.
And
Jezebel’s body will
lie like dung in the field on the plot of ground at
Jezreel, so that no one can say: This is
Jezebel.’”

And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be
sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’
sepulchres,
lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire?
and replied to the king, “May the king live
forever! Why should I not be
sad when the city where my fathers are buried
lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?”
Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.
Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in. Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned down. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, so that we will no longer be a disgrace.”

After them the Tekoites repaired another piece, over against the great tower that lieth out, even unto the wall of Ophel.

And if the people of the land bring ware or any
victuals on the sabbath day to sell, that we would not
buy it of them on the sabbath, or on the holy day: and that we would leave the seventh year, and the
exaction of every debt.
When the people of the land bring
merchandise or any kind of grain to sell on the Sabbath day, we will not
buy from them on a Sabbath or holy day. Every seventh year we will let the fields
lie fallow, and will
cancel every debt.
Then were the king’s
scribes called on the
thirteenth day of the first month, and there was written according to all that
Haman had commanded unto the king’s
lieutenants, and to the governors that were over every province, and to the rulers of every people of every province according to the writing thereof, and to every people after their language; in the name of king
Ahasuerus was it written, and sealed with the king’s ring.
On the
thirteenth day of the first month, the royal
scribes were summoned and the order was written exactly as
Haman commanded the royal satraps, the governors of each province, and the officials of each people, in the
script of each province and the language of every people. It was written in the name of King
Xerxes and sealed with the royal
signet ring.
Then were the king’s
scribes called at that time in the third month, that is, the month
Sivan, on the three and
twentieth day thereof; and it was written according to all that
Mordecai commanded unto the Jews, and to the
lieutenants, and the
deputies and rulers of the provinces which are from India unto
Ethiopia, an hundred twenty and seven provinces, unto every province according to the writing thereof, and unto every people after their language, and to the Jews according to their writing, and according to their language.
At once the royal
scribes were summoned, and on the twenty-third day of the third month (the month of
Sivan), they recorded all of
Mordecai’s orders to the Jews and to the satraps, governors, and princes of the 127 provinces from India to
Cush—writing to each province in its own
script, to every people in their own language, and to the Jews in their own
script and language.
And all the rulers of the provinces, and the
lieutenants, and the
deputies, and officers of the king, helped the Jews; because the fear of
Mordecai fell upon them.
And all the officials of the provinces, the satraps, the governors, and the king’s administrators helped the Jews, because the fear of
Mordecai had fallen upon them.
Now therefore be content, look upon me; for it is evident unto you if I lie.
But now, please look at me. Would I lie to your face?
When I
lie down, I say, When shall I arise, and the night be gone? and I am full of tossings to and
fro unto the
dawning of the day.
When I
lie down I think: ‘When will I get up?’ But the night drags on, and I
toss and turn until
dawn.
And why
dost thou not
pardon my
transgression, and take away mine iniquity? for now shall I sleep in the dust; and thou shalt seek me in the morning, but I shall not be.
Why do You not
pardon my
transgression and take away my iniquity? For soon I will
lie down in the dust; You will seek me, but I will be no more.”
Should thy
lies make men hold their peace? and when thou mockest, shall no man make thee
ashamed?
And thou shalt be secure, because there is hope;
yea, thou shalt
dig about thee, and thou shalt take thy rest in safety.
You will be secure, because there is hope, and you will look around and lie down in safety.
Also thou shalt
lie down, and none shall make thee afraid;
yea, many shall make suit unto thee.
You will lie down without fear, and many will court your favor.
But ye are forgers of lies, ye are all physicians of no value.
You, however,
smear with
lies; you are all worthless physicians.
So man
lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not
awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.
so a man
lies down and does not rise. Until the heavens are no more, he will not be
awakened or
roused from sleep.
The
snare is laid for him in the ground, and a
trap for him in the way.
A
noose is hidden in the ground, and a
trap lies in his path.
But ye should say, Why
persecute we him, seeing the root of the matter is found in me?
If you say, ‘Let us
persecute him, since the root of the matter
lies with him,’
His bones are full of the sin of his youth, which shall lie down with him in the dust.
The youthful
vigor that fills his bones will
lie down with him in the dust.
They shall lie down alike in the dust, and the worms shall cover them.
But together they lie down in the dust, and worms cover them both.
The rich man shall lie down, but he shall not be gathered: he openeth his eyes, and he is not.
He lies down wealthy, but will do so no more; when he opens his eyes, all is gone.
Should I
lie against my right? my wound is incurable without
transgression.
Would I
lie about my case? My wound is incurable, though I am without
transgression.’
How thy garments are warm, when he quieteth the earth by the south wind?
You whose clothes get hot when the land
lies hushed under the south wind,
He
lieth under the
shady trees, in the
covert of the reed, and fens.
He
lies under the
lotus plants, hidden among the reeds of the marsh.
I laid me down and
slept; I
awaked; for the LORD sustained me.
I
lie down and sleep; I
wake again, for the LORD sustains me.
O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame? how long will ye love vanity, and seek after
leasing?
Selah.
How long, O men, will my honor be
maligned? How long will you love vanity and seek after
lies?
Selah I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.
I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.
You destroy those who tell
lies; the LORD abhors the man of
bloodshed and
deceit.
For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness; their throat is an open
sepulchre; they
flatter with their tongue.
For not a word they speak can be trusted; destruction
lies within them. Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice
deceit.
He sitteth in the
lurking places of the villages: in the secret places
doth he murder the innocent: his eyes are
privily set against the poor.
He
lies in wait near the villages; in
ambush he slays the innocent; his eyes watch in
stealth for the helpless.
He
lieth in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he
lieth in wait to catch the poor: he
doth catch the poor, when he draweth him into his net.
He
lies in wait like a lion in a
thicket; he lurks to seize the
oppressed; he catches the lowly in his net.
They speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with
flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak.
They
lie to one another; they speak with
flattering lips and a double heart.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters.
Let me not be
ashamed, O LORD; for I have called upon thee: let the wicked be
ashamed, and let them be silent in the grave.
O LORD, let me not be
ashamed, for I have called on You. Let the wicked be put to shame; let them
lie silent in
Sheol.
There are the workers of iniquity fallen: they are cast down, and shall not be able to rise.
There the evildoers lie fallen, thrown down and unable to rise.
The wicked watcheth the righteous, and seeketh to
slay him.
Though the wicked
lie in wait for the righteous, and seek to
slay them,
Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
Blessed is the man who has made the LORD his trust, who has not turned to the proud, nor to those who
lapse into
falsehood.
An evil disease, say they, cleaveth fast unto him: and now that he lieth he shall rise up no more.
“A
vile disease has been poured into him; he will never get up from where he
lies!”
Day and night they go about it upon the walls thereof: mischief also and sorrow are in the midst of it.
Day and night they
encircle the walls, while
malice and trouble
lie within.
My soul is among lions: and I lie even among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.
My soul is among the lions; I
lie down with
ravenous beasts— with men whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords.
For, lo, they
lie in wait for my soul: the mighty are gathered against me; not for my
transgression, nor for my sin, O LORD.
See how they
lie in wait for me. Fierce men
conspire against me for no
transgression or sin of my own, O LORD.
For the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips let them even be taken in their pride: and for
cursing and lying which they speak.
By the sins of their mouths and the words of their lips, let them be
trapped in their pride, in the curses and
lies they utter.
They fully intend to cast him down from his lofty
perch; they delight in
lies; with their mouths they
bless, but inwardly they
curse.
Selah Surely men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie: to be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity.
But the king shall
rejoice in God; every one that sweareth by him shall glory: but the mouth of them that speak
lies shall be stopped.
But the king will
rejoice in God; all who
swear by Him will
exult, for the mouths of liars will be shut.
Though ye have
lien among the pots, yet shall ye be as the wings of a
dove covered with silver, and her feathers with yellow gold.
Though you
lie down among the sheepfolds, the wings of the
dove are covered with silver, and her feathers with
shimmering gold.”
For mine enemies speak against me; and they that lay wait for my soul take counsel together,
For my enemies speak against me, and those who
lie in wait for my life
conspire,
The stouthearted are
spoiled, they have
slept their sleep: and none of the men of might have found their hands.
The
valiant lie plundered; they sleep their last sleep. No men of might could lift a hand.
At thy
rebuke, O God of Jacob, both the
chariot and horse are cast into a dead sleep.
At Your
rebuke, O God of Jacob, both horse and rider
lie stunned.
Nevertheless they did
flatter him with their mouth, and they
lied unto him with their tongues.
But they
deceived Him with their mouths, and
lied to Him with their tongues.
Free among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, whom thou rememberest no more: and they are cut off from thy hand.
I am
forsaken among the dead, like the slain who
lie in the grave, whom You remember no more, who are cut off from Your care.
Thy wrath
lieth hard upon me, and thou hast
afflicted me with all thy waves.
Selah.
Once and for all I have
sworn by My
holiness— I will not
lie to David—
He that worketh
deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that telleth
lies shall not
tarry in my sight.
No one who practices
deceit shall dwell in my house; no one who tells
lies shall stand in my presence.
I watch, and am as a
sparrow alone upon the house top.
I
lie awake; I am like a
lone bird on a housetop.
The sun ariseth, they gather themselves together, and lay them down in their dens.
The sun rises, and they withdraw; they lie down in their dens.
The proud have
forged a
lie against me: but I will keep thy precepts with my whole heart.
Though the
arrogant have
smeared me with
lies, I keep Your precepts with all my heart.
If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us
lurk privily for the innocent without cause:
If they say, “Come along, let us
lie in wait for blood, let us
ambush the innocent without cause,
And they lay wait for their own blood; they
lurk privily for their own lives.
But they
lie in wait for their own blood; they
ambush their own lives.
When thou
liest down, thou shalt not be afraid:
yea, thou shalt
lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.
When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you rest, your sleep will be sweet.
How long will you lie there, O slacker? When will you get up from your sleep?
A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
a false witness who gives false testimony, and one who stirs up discord among brothers.
When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.
When you walk, they will guide you; when you
lie down, they will watch over you; when you
awake, they will speak to you.
Now is she without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.)
Now in the street, now in the squares, she lurks at every corner.
The words of the wicked are to lie in wait for blood: but the mouth of the upright shall deliver them.
The words of the wicked lie in wait for blood, but the speech of the upright rescues them.
A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies.
A true witness delivereth souls: but a
deceitful witness speaketh
lies.
A truthful witness saves lives, but one who utters
lies is
deceitful.
Hell and destruction are before the LORD: how much more then the hearts of the children of men?
Sheol and
Abaddon lie open before the LORD— how much more the hearts of men!
A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape.
A false witness will not go unpunished, and one who utters lies will not escape.
A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish.
A false witness will not go unpunished, and one who pours out lies will perish.
Thorns and snares are in the way of the
froward: he that
doth keep his soul shall be far from them.
Thorns and snares
lie on the path of the
perverse; he who guards his soul stays far from them.
She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.
Like a
robber she
lies in wait and multiplies the faithless among men.
