At the same time came to them Tatnai, governor on this side the river, and Shethar-boznai, and their companions, and said thus unto them, Who hath commanded you to build this house, and to make up this wall?
At that time Tattenai the governor of the region west of the Euphrates, Shethar-bozenai, and their associates went to the Jews and asked, “Who authorized you to rebuild this temple and restore this structure?”
Then said we unto them after this manner, What are the names of the men that make this building?
They also asked, “What are the names of the men who are constructing this building?”
Then asked we those elders, and said unto them thus, Who commanded you to build this house, and to make up these walls?
So we questioned the elders and asked, “Who authorized you to rebuild this temple and restore this structure?”
Moreover I
make a decree what ye shall do to the elders of these Jews for the building of this house of God: that of the king’s goods, even of the tribute beyond the river,
forthwith expenses be given unto these men, that they be not hindered.
I
hereby decree what you must do for these elders of the Jews who are rebuilding this house of God: The cost is to be paid in full to these men from the royal treasury out of the taxes of the provinces west of the Euphrates, so that the work will not be hindered.
I
make a decree, that all they of the people of Israel, and of his priests and Levites, in my realm, which are minded of their own
freewill to go up to Jerusalem, go with thee.
I
hereby decree that any
volunteers among the Israelites in my kingdom, including the priests and Levites, may go up with you to Jerusalem.
And I, even I
Artaxerxes the king, do
make a decree to all the treasurers which are beyond the river, that
whatsoever Ezra the priest, the
scribe of the law of the God of heaven, shall require of you, it be done speedily,
I, King
Artaxerxes, decree to all the treasurers west of the Euphrates: Whatever
Ezra the priest, the
scribe of the Law of the God of heaven, may require of you, it must be provided
promptly,
Now therefore let us
make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those that
tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law.
So now let us
make a covenant before our God to send away all the foreign wives and their children, according to the counsel of my lord and of those who
tremble at the command of our God. Let it be done according to the Law.
Now therefore
make confession unto the LORD God of your fathers, and do his pleasure: and separate
yourselves from the people of the land, and from the strange wives.
Now, therefore,
make a confession to the LORD, the God of your fathers, and do His will. Separate
yourselves from the people of the land and from your foreign wives.”
Then the king said unto me, For what
dost thou
make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven.
“What is your request?” replied the king. So I prayed to the God of heaven
And a letter unto
Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to
make beams for the gates of the palace which
appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.
And may I have a letter to
Asaph, keeper of the king’s forest, so that he will give me timber to
make beams for the gates of the citadel to the temple, for the city wall, and for the house I will occupy.” And because the
gracious hand of my God was upon me, the king granted my requests.
And he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews? will they
fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they
make an end in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the
rubbish which are burned?
before his associates and the army of Samaria, saying, “What are these feeble Jews doing? Can they restore the wall by themselves? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they complete it in a day? Can they bring these burnt stones back to life from the mounds of
rubble?”
And all the people went their way to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to
make great
mirth, because they had understood the words that were declared unto them.
Then all the people began to eat and drink, to send out portions, and to
rejoice greatly, because they understood the words that had been made known to them.
And that they should
publish and
proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, Go forth unto the mount, and
fetch olive branches, and pine branches, and
myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to
make booths, as it is written.
So they proclaimed this message and spread it throughout their towns and in Jerusalem, saying, “Go out to the hill country and bring back branches of olive, wild olive,
myrtle, palm, and other
leafy trees, to
make booths, as it is written.”
And because of all this we make a sure covenant, and write it; and our princes, Levites, and priests, seal unto it.
In view of all this, we make a binding agreement, putting it in writing and sealing it with the names of our leaders, Levites, and priests.”
For the
shewbread, and for the continual meat offering, and for the continual burnt offering, of the sabbaths, of the new moons, for the set feasts, and for the holy things, and for the sin offerings to
make an
atonement for Israel, and for all the work of the house of our God.
for the
showbread, for the regular grain offerings and burnt offerings, for the Sabbath offerings, for the New Moons and appointed feasts, for the holy offerings, for the sin offerings to
make atonement for Israel, and for all the duties of the house of our God.
And when the king’s decree which he shall make shall be published throughout all his empire, (for it is great,) all the wives shall give to their husbands honour, both to great and small.
The edict the king issues will be heard throughout his vast kingdom—and so all women, from the least to the greatest, will honor their husbands.”
Also he gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given at
Shushan to destroy them, to
shew it unto
Esther, and to declare it unto her, and to charge her that she should go in unto the king, to
make supplication unto him, and to
make request before him for her people.
Mordecai also gave Hathach a copy of the written decree issued in
Susa for the destruction of the Jews, to show and explain to
Esther,
urging her to approach the king,
implore his favor, and
plead before him for her people.
Then the king said to
Haman,
Make haste, and take the
apparel and the horse, as thou hast said, and do even so to
Mordecai the
Jew, that sitteth at the king’s gate: let nothing fail of all that thou hast spoken.
“
Hurry,” said the king to
Haman, “and do just as you proposed. Take the
robe and the horse to
Mordecai the
Jew, who is sitting at the king’s gate. Do not neglect anything that you have suggested.”
And the king arising from the
banquet of wine in his wrath went into the palace garden: and
Haman stood up to
make request for his life to
Esther the queen; for he saw that there was evil determined against him by the king.
In his
fury, the king arose from drinking his wine and went to the palace garden, while
Haman stayed behind to
beg Queen
Esther for his life, for he realized that the king was
planning a terrible fate for him.
As the days wherein the Jews rested from their enemies, and the month which was turned unto them from sorrow to joy, and from
mourning into a good day: that they should
make them days of feasting and joy, and of sending portions one to another, and gifts to the poor.
as the days on which the Jews gained rest from their enemies and the month in which their sorrow turned to joy and their
mourning into a
holiday. He wrote that these were to be days of feasting and joy, of sending gifts to one another and to the poor.
Shall
mortal man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his
maker?
‘Can a
mortal be more righteous than God, or a man more pure than his
Maker?
For he
maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands
make whole.
For He wounds, but He also binds; He strikes, but His hands also
heal.
But if you would earnestly seek God and ask the
Almighty for mercy,
If thou
wert pure and upright; surely now he would
awake for thee, and
make the
habitation of thy righteousness prosperous.
if you are pure and upright, even now He will
rouse Himself on your behalf and restore your righteous estate.
He is the
Maker of the Bear and
Orion, of the
Pleiades and the constellations of the south.
Whom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answer, but I would
make supplication to my judge.
For even if I were right, I could not answer. I could only
beg my Judge for mercy.
If I wash myself with snow water, and make my hands never so clean;
If I should wash myself with snow and
cleanse my hands with
lye,
Should thy lies
make men hold their peace? and when thou mockest, shall no man
make thee
ashamed?
Also thou shalt lie down, and none shall
make thee afraid;
yea, many shall
make suit unto thee.
You will lie down without fear, and many will court your favor.
He leadeth counsellors away
spoiled, and
maketh the judges fools.
He leads counselors away
barefoot and
makes fools of judges.
He increaseth the nations, and destroyeth them: he enlargeth the nations, and straiteneth them again.
He makes nations great and destroys them; He enlarges nations, then disperses them.
He taketh away the heart of the chief of the people of the earth, and causeth them to
wander in a wilderness where there is no way.
He deprives the earth’s leaders of reason and
makes them
wander in a
trackless wasteland.
They
grope in the darkness without light; He
makes them
stagger like drunkards.
Would His majesty not
terrify you? Would the
dread of Him not fall upon you?
Withdraw thine hand far from me: and let not thy
dread make me afraid.
Withdraw Your hand from me, and do not let Your terror
frighten me.
For thou writest bitter things against me, and
makest me to possess the
iniquities of my youth.
For You record bitter accusations against me and
bequeath to me the
iniquities of my youth.
Trouble and
anguish shall
make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.
Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.
Though his face is covered with fat and his waistline bulges with flesh,
How long will it be
ere ye
make an end of words? mark, and afterwards we will speak.
“How long until you end these speeches? Show some sense, and then we can talk.
Terrors shall make him afraid on every side, and shall drive him to his feet.
These ten times have ye reproached me: ye are not
ashamed that ye
make yourselves strange to me.
Ten times now you have reproached me; you
shamelessly mistreat me.
Therefore do my thoughts cause me to answer, and for this I
make haste.
“So my anxious thoughts
compel me to answer, because of the
turmoil within me.
Is it any pleasure to the
Almighty, that thou art righteous? or is it gain to him that thou
makest thy ways perfect?
Does it delight the
Almighty that you are righteous? Does He profit if your ways are
blameless?
Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows.
You will pray to Him, and He will hear you, and you will
fulfill your vows.
For God
maketh my heart soft, and the
Almighty troubleth me:
Which
make oil within their walls, and
tread their winepresses, and suffer
thirst.
And if it be not so now, who will
make me a
liar, and
make my speech nothing worth?
If this is not so, then who can prove me a
liar and reduce my words to nothing?”
Dominion and fear are with him, he maketh peace in his high places.
“Dominion and
awe belong to God; He establishes harmony in the heights of heaven.
He buildeth his house as a
moth, and as a
booth that the keeper
maketh.
To make the weight for the winds; and he weigheth the waters by measure.
When God fixed the weight of the wind and measured out the waters,
Did not he that made me in the
womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the
womb?
Did not He who made me in the
womb also
make them? Did not the same One form us in the
womb?
For I know not to give
flattering titles; in so doing my
maker would soon take me away.
For I do not know how to
flatter, or my
Maker would remove me in an instant.
Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, neither shall my hand be heavy upon thee.
Surely no fear of me should
terrify you; nor will my hand be heavy upon you.
When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only:
But when He remains silent, who can
condemn Him? When He hides His face, who can see Him? Yet He watches over both man and nation,
By reason of the multitude of oppressions they
make the
oppressed to cry: they cry out by reason of the arm of the mighty.
Men cry out under great oppression; they
plead for relief from the arm of the mighty.
But none saith, Where is God my maker, who giveth songs in the night;
But no one asks, ‘Where is God my Maker, who gives us songs in the night,
Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and maketh us wiser than the fowls of heaven?
who teaches us more than the beasts of the earth and makes us wiser than the birds of the air?’
I will
fetch my knowledge from
afar, and will
ascribe righteousness to my
Maker.
I get my knowledge from
afar, and I will
ascribe justice to my
Maker.
For he maketh small the drops of water: they pour down rain according to the vapour thereof:
For He draws up drops of water which distill the rain from the
mist,
Dost thou know when God disposed them, and caused the light of his cloud to
shine?
Do you know how God dispatches the clouds or
makes the
lightning flash?
To satisfy the
desolate and waste ground; and to cause the
bud of the tender
herb to spring forth?
to satisfy the
parched wasteland and
make it
sprout with tender grass?
Canst thou
make him afraid as a
grasshopper? the glory of his nostrils is terrible.
Doth the eagle mount up at thy command, and
make her nest on high?
Does the eagle
soar at your command and
make his nest on high?
He is the chief of the ways of God: he that made him can make his sword to approach unto him.
He is the foremost of God’s works; only his Maker can draw the sword against him.
Will he make many supplications unto thee? will he speak soft words unto thee?
Will he
beg you for mercy or speak to you softly?
Will he
make a covenant with thee?
wilt thou take him for a servant for ever?
Will he make a covenant with you to take him as a slave for life?
Shall the companions
make a
banquet of him? shall they part him among the merchants?
Will traders
barter for him or divide him among the merchants?
He
maketh the deep to
boil like a pot: he
maketh the sea like a pot of
ointment.
He
maketh a path to
shine after him; one would think the deep to be
hoary.
He leaves a
glistening wake behind him; one would think the deep had white hair!
Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the
uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.
Ask Me, and I will make the nations Your inheritance, the ends of the earth Your possession.
I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.
I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.
Lead me, O LORD, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies; make thy way straight before my face.
Lead me, O LORD, in Your righteousness because of my enemies; make straight Your way before me.
When he
maketh inquisition for blood, he remembereth them: he forgetteth not the cry of the humble.
For, lo, the wicked bend their bow, they
make ready their
arrow upon the string, that they may
privily shoot at the upright in heart.
For behold, the wicked bend their bows. They set their
arrow on the string to shoot from the shadows at the upright in heart.
It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect.
It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way clear.
He maketh my feet like hinds’ feet, and setteth me upon my high places.
He makes my feet like those of a deer and stations me upon the heights.
Grant thee according to thine own heart, and fulfil all thy counsel.
May He give you the desires of your heart and make all your plans succeed.
Thou shalt
make them as a
fiery oven in the time of thine anger: the LORD shall
swallow them up in his wrath, and the fire shall
devour them.
You will place them in a
fiery furnace at the time of Your appearing. In His wrath the LORD will
engulf them, and the fire will
consume them.
Therefore shalt thou make them turn their back, when thou shalt make ready thine arrows upon thy strings against the face of them.
For You will put them to flight when Your bow is trained upon them.
But thou art he that took me out of the
womb: thou
didst make me hope when I was upon my mother’s breasts.
Yet You brought me forth from the
womb; You made me secure at my mother’s breast.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters.
And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing,
yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD.
Then my head will be held high above my enemies around me. At His tabernacle I will offer sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing and make music to the LORD.
The voice of the LORD
maketh the hinds to
calve, and discovereth the forests: and in his temple
doth every one speak of his glory.
The voice of the LORD twists the oaks and strips the forests bare. And in His temple all cry, “Glory!”
Make thy face to
shine upon thy servant: save me for thy
mercies’ sake.
Make Your face
shine on Your servant; save me by Your loving devotion.
Be ye not as the horse, or as the
mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with
bit and
bridle, lest they come near unto thee.
Do not be like the horse or
mule, which have no understanding; they must be
controlled with
bit and
bridle to
make them come to you.
Praise the LORD with
harp: sing unto him with the
psaltery and an instrument of ten strings.
Praise the LORD with the
harp;
make music to Him with ten strings.
The LORD bringeth the counsel of the heathen to
nought: he
maketh the devices of the people of none effect.
The LORD frustrates the plans of the nations; He thwarts the devices of the peoples.
My soul shall
make her
boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be
glad.
False witnesses did rise up; they laid to my charge things that I knew not.
Hostile witnesses come forward; they make charges I know nothing about.
They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house; and thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures.
They feast on the abundance of Your house, and You give them drink from Your river of delights.
Make haste to help me, O Lord my salvation.
Come quickly to help me, O Lord my
Savior.
LORD,
make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know how
frail I am.
“Show me, O LORD, my end and the measure of my days. Let me know how fleeting my life is.
Deliver me from all my transgressions:
make me not the reproach of the
foolish.
Deliver me from all my transgressions; do not make me the reproach of fools.
When thou with rebukes
dost correct man for iniquity, thou
makest his beauty to
consume away like a
moth: surely every man is vanity.
Selah.
Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
Blessed is the man who has made the LORD his trust, who has not turned to the proud, nor to those who
lapse into
falsehood.
