And they said, There must be an inheritance for them that be escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe be not destroyed out of Israel.
They added, “There
must be heirs for the survivors of Benjamin, so that a tribe of Israel will not be
wiped out.
Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the hand of
Naomi, thou
must buy it also of
Ruth the
Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance.
Then Boaz said, “On the day you
buy the land from
Naomi and also from
Ruth the
Moabitess, you
must also acquire the widow of the deceased in order to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance.”
And if any man said unto him, Let them not fail to burn the fat presently, and then take as much as thy soul desireth; then he would answer him,
Nay; but thou shalt give it me now: and if not, I will take it by force.
And if any man said to him, “The fat must be burned first; then you may take whatever you want,” the servant would reply, “No, you must give it to me right now. If you refuse, I will take it by force!”
And when the men of
Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not
abide with us: for his hand is
sore upon us, and upon
Dagon our god.
And when the men of
Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, “The ark of the God of Israel
must not stay here with us, because His hand is heavy upon us and upon our god
Dagon.”
They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto
Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about thither.
So they called together all the rulers of the Philistines and asked, “What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?” “It
must be moved to
Gath,” they replied. So they carried away the ark of the God of Israel.
So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it
slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.
Then the Ekronites assembled all the rulers of the Philistines and said, “Send away the ark of the God of Israel. It
must return to its place, so that it will not kill us and our people!” For a deadly confusion had
pervaded the city; the hand of God was heavy upon it.
Now therefore
hearken unto their voice:
howbeit yet
protest solemnly unto them, and
shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.
Now
listen to them, but you
must solemnly
warn them and show them the manner of the king who will reign over them.”
Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said,
Nay; but we will have a king over us;
Nevertheless, the people refused to
listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We
must have a king over us.
And the LORD said to Samuel,
Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.
“
Listen to their voice,” the LORD said to Samuel. “
Appoint a king for them.” Then Samuel told the men of Israel, “
Everyone must go back to his city.”
As soon as ye be come into the city, ye shall
straightway find him, before he go up to the high place to eat: for the people will not eat until he come, because he
doth bless the sacrifice; and afterwards they eat that be
bidden. Now therefore get you up; for about this time ye shall find him.
As soon as you enter the city, you will find him before he goes up to the high place to eat. The people will not eat until he comes, because he
must bless the sacrifice; after that, the guests will eat. Go up at once; you will find him.”
And when ye saw that Nahash the king of the children of
Ammon came against you, ye said unto me,
Nay; but a king shall reign over us: when the LORD your God was your king.
But when you saw that Nahash king of the
Ammonites was moving against you, you said to me, ‘No, we
must have a king to rule over us’—even though the LORD your God was your king.
Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears:
And no
blacksmith could be found in all the land of Israel, because the Philistines had said, “The Hebrews
must not be allowed to make swords or spears.”
And Saul said,
Disperse yourselves among the people, and say unto them, Bring me
hither every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and
slay them here, and eat; and sin not against the LORD in eating with the blood. And all the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and
slew them there.
Then he said, “Go among the troops and tell them, ‘Each man
must bring me his ox or his sheep, slaughter them in this place, and then eat. Do not sin against the LORD by eating meat with the blood still in it.’” So that night
everyone brought his ox and slaughtered it there.
And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and
spoil them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do
whatsoever seemeth good unto thee. Then said the priest, Let us draw near
hither unto God.
And Saul said, “Let us go down after the Philistines by night and
plunder them until
dawn, leaving no man alive!” “Do what seems good to you,” the troops replied. But the priest said, “We
must consult God here.”
For, as the LORD liveth, which saveth Israel, though it be in
Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. But there was not a man among all the people that answered him.
As surely as the LORD who saves Israel lives, even if it is my son
Jonathan, he
must die!” But not one of the troops said a word.
Then Saul said to
Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. And
Jonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in mine hand, and, lo, I
must die.
“Tell me what you have done,” Saul commanded him. So
Jonathan told him, “I only tasted a little honey with the end of the staff that was in my hand. And now I
must die?”
And the people said unto Saul, Shall
Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? God
forbid: as the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day. So the people
rescued Jonathan, that he died not.
But the people said to Saul, “
Must Jonathan die—he who accomplished such a great
deliverance for Israel? Never! As surely as the LORD lives, not a hair of his head will fall to the ground, for with God’s help he has accomplished this
today.” So the people
rescued Jonathan, and he did not die.
And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the
Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of
musick.
As the troops were returning home after David had killed the
Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel to meet King Saul with singing and dancing, with joyful songs, and with tambourines and other instruments.
And David
sware moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he saith, Let not
Jonathan know this, lest he be
grieved: but truly as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death.
But David again
vowed, “Your father knows very well that I have found favor in your eyes, and he has said, ‘
Jonathan must not know of this, or he will be
grieved.’ As surely as the LORD lives and as you
yourself live, there is but a step between me and death.”
But if I say thus unto the young man, Behold, the arrows are beyond thee; go thy way: for the LORD hath sent thee away.
But if I say to the young man, ‘Look, the arrows are beyond you,’ then you must go, for the LORD has sent you away.
For as long as the son of
Jesse liveth upon the ground, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send and
fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die.
For as long as the son of
Jesse lives on this earth, neither you nor your
kingship shall be established. Now send for him and bring him to me, for he
must surely die!”
And
Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said unto him, Wherefore shall he be slain? what hath he done?
“Why
must he be put to death?”
Jonathan replied. “What has he done?”
Have I need of
mad men, that ye have brought this fellow to play the
mad man in my presence? shall this fellow come into my house?
Am I in need of
madmen, that you have brought this man to
rave in my presence?
Must this man come into my house?”
Now therefore know and consider what thou
wilt do; for evil is determined against our master, and against all his household: for he is such a son of
Belial, that a man cannot speak to him.
Now consider carefully what you
must do, because
disaster looms over our master and all his household. For he is such a
scoundrel that
nobody can speak to him!”
And it came to pass in those days, that the Philistines gathered their armies together for warfare, to fight with Israel. And Achish said unto David, Know thou
assuredly, that thou shalt go out with me to battle, thou and thy men.
Now in those days the Philistines gathered their forces for warfare against Israel. So Achish said to David, “You must understand that you and your men are to go out to battle with me.”
And the princes of the Philistines were
wroth with him; and the princes of the Philistines said unto him, Make this fellow return, that he may go again to his place which thou hast appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest in the battle he be an
adversary to us: for
wherewith should he
reconcile himself unto his master? should it not be with the heads of these men?
But the commanders of the Philistines were
angry with Achish and told him, “Send that man back and let him return to the place you assigned him. He
must not go down with us into battle only to become our
adversary during the war. What better way for him to regain the favor of his master than with the heads of our men?
And Achish answered and said to David, I know that thou art good in my sight, as an angel of God: notwithstanding the princes of the Philistines have said, He shall not go up with us to the battle.
Achish replied, “I know that you are as pleasing in my sight as an angel of God. But the commanders of the Philistines have said, ‘He must not go into battle with us.’
Then said David, Ye shall not do so, my brethren, with that which the LORD hath given us, who hath preserved us, and delivered the company that came against us into our hand.
But David said, “My brothers, you must not do this with what the LORD has given us. He has protected us and delivered into our hands the raiders who came against us.
Then
Abner called to
Joab, and said, Shall the sword
devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then,
ere thou
bid the people return from following their brethren?
Then
Abner called out to
Joab: “
Must the sword
devour forever? Do you not
realize that this will only end in bitterness? How long before you tell the troops to stop pursuing their brothers?”
And David said on that day,
Whosoever getteth up to the
gutter, and smiteth the Jebusites, and the
lame and the blind, that are
hated of David’s soul, he shall be chief and captain. Wherefore they said, The blind and the
lame shall not come into the house.
On that day he said, “
Whoever attacks the Jebusites
must use the water shaft to reach the
lame and blind who are
despised by David.” That is why it is said, “The blind and the
lame will never enter the palace.”
And he shall restore the lamb
fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no
pity.
Because he has done this thing and has shown no
pity, he
must pay for the lamb four times over.”
And Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s brother, answered and said, Let not my lord suppose that they have slain all the young men the king’s sons; for Amnon only is dead: for by the appointment of
Absalom this hath been determined from the day that he forced his sister Tamar.
But Jonadab, the son of David’s brother Shimeah, spoke up: “My lord
must not think they have killed all the sons of the king, for only Amnon is dead. In fact,
Absalom has
planned this since the day Amnon
violated his sister Tamar.
For we
must needs die, and are as water
spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; neither
doth God respect any person: yet
doth he
devise means, that his banished be not expelled from him.
For surely we will die and be like water poured out on the ground, which cannot be recovered. Yet God does not take away a life; but He devises ways that the banished one may not be cast out from Him.
And the king said, Let him turn to his own house, and let him not see my face. So
Absalom returned to his own house, and saw not the king’s face.
But the king added, “He may return to his house, but he
must not see my face.” So
Absalom returned to his own house, but he did not see the king.
And David said unto all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us
flee; for we shall not else escape from
Absalom: make speed to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly, and bring evil upon us, and
smite the city with the edge of the sword.
And David said to all the servants with him in Jerusalem, “Arise and let us
flee, or we will not escape from
Absalom! We
must leave quickly, or he will soon overtake us,
heap disaster on us, and put the city to the sword.”
But the people answered, Thou shalt not go forth: for if we
flee away, they will not care for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us: but now thou art worth ten thousand of us: therefore now it is better that thou succour us out of the city.
But the people
pleaded, “You
must not go out! For if we have to
flee, they will pay no attention to us. Even if half of us die, they will not care; but you are worth ten thousand of us. It is better for now if you support us from the city.”
And
Joab said unto him, Thou shalt not bear
tidings this day, but thou shalt bear
tidings another day: but this day thou shalt bear no
tidings, because the king’s son is dead.
But
Joab replied, “You are not the man to take good news
today. You may do it another day, but you
must not do so
today, because the king’s son is dead.”
And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king, and had neither dressed his feet, nor
trimmed his
beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came again in peace.
Then Mephibosheth, Saul’s grandson, went down to meet the king. He had not cared for his feet or
trimmed his
mustache or washed his clothes from the day the king had left until the day he returned safely.
But
Abishai the son of Zeruiah succoured him, and
smote the
Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David
sware unto him, saying, Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou
quench not the light of Israel.
But
Abishai son of Zeruiah came to his aid, struck the
Philistine, and killed him. Then David’s men
swore to him, “You
must never again go out with us to battle, so that the lamp of Israel may not be
extinguished.”
The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God.
The God of Israel spoke; the Rock of Israel said to me, ‘He who rules the people with justice, who rules in the fear of God,
But the man that shall touch them
must be
fenced with iron and the staff of a
spear; and they shall be utterly burned with fire in the same place.
The man who touches them
must be armed with iron or with the shaft of a
spear. The fire burns them to ashes in the place where they lie.”
And while he yet spake, behold,
Jonathan the son of
Abiathar the priest came: and Adonijah said unto him, Come in; for thou art a
valiant man, and bringest good
tidings.
As he was speaking, suddenly
Jonathan the son of
Abiathar the priest arrived. “Come in,” said Adonijah, “for you are a man of
valor. You
must be bringing good news.”
Of the nations concerning which the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon
clave unto these in love.
These women were from the nations about which the LORD had told the Israelites, “You
must not
intermarry with them, for surely they will turn your hearts after their gods.” Yet Solomon
clung to these women in love.
Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. They
hearkened therefore to the word of the LORD, and returned to depart, according to the word of the LORD.
that this is what the LORD says: ‘You are not to go up and fight against your brothers, the Israelites. Each of you
must return home, for this word is from Me.’” So they
listened to the word of the LORD and turned back according to the word of the LORD.
For so was it charged me by the word of the LORD, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest.
For this is what I was commanded by the word of the LORD: ‘You must not eat bread or drink water or return by the way you came.’”
For it was said to me by the word of the LORD, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest.
For I have been told by the word of the LORD: ‘You must not eat bread or drink water there or return by the way you came.’”
And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he spake to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then
bury me in the
sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones:
After he had buried him, the prophet said to his sons, “When I die, you
must bury me in the tomb where the man of God is buried. Lay my bones beside his bones,
And it came to pass at
noon, that
Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry
aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or
peradventure he sleepeth, and
must be
awaked.
At
noon Elijah began to
taunt them, saying, “
Shout louder, for he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or occupied, or on a journey. Perhaps he is sleeping and
must be
awakened!”
And the prophet came to the king of Israel, and said unto him, Go,
strengthen thyself, and mark, and see what thou doest: for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against thee.
Afterward, the prophet approached the king of Israel and said, “Go and
strengthen your position, and take note what you
must do, for in the spring the king of
Aram will come up against you.”
And number thee an army, like the army that thou hast lost, horse for horse, and
chariot for
chariot: and we will fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they. And he
hearkened unto their voice, and did so.
And you
must raise an army like the one you have lost—horse for horse and
chariot for
chariot—so we can fight the Israelites on the plain, where we will surely prevail.” And the king approved their plan and acted accordingly.
And the king said unto him, How many times shall I
adjure thee that thou tell me nothing but that which is true in the name of the LORD?
But the king said to him, “How many times
must I make you
swear not to tell me anything but the truth in the name of the LORD?”
For the Lord had made the host of the Syrians to hear a noise of
chariots, and a noise of horses, even the noise of a great host: and they said one to another, Lo, the king of Israel hath
hired against us the kings of the
Hittites, and the kings of the Egyptians, to come upon us.
For the Lord had caused the Arameans to hear the sound of
chariots, horses, and a great army, so that they said to one another, “Look, the king of Israel
must have
hired the kings of the
Hittites and Egyptians to attack us.”
And ye shall compass the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand: and he that cometh within the ranges, let him be slain: and be ye with the king as he goeth out and as he cometh in.
You
must surround the king with weapons in hand, and
anyone who approaches the ranks
must be put to death. You
must stay close to the king wherever he goes.”
But Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of the hundreds, the officers of the host, and said unto them, Have her forth without the ranges: and him that followeth her kill with the sword. For the priest had said, Let her not be slain in the house of the LORD.
And Jehoiada the priest ordered the commanders of hundreds in charge of the army, “Bring her out between the ranks, and put to the sword
anyone who follows her.” For the priest had said, “She
must not be put to death in the house of the LORD.”
But the children of the murderers he
slew not: according unto that which is written in the book of the law of Moses, wherein the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, nor the children be put to death for the fathers; but every man shall be put to death for his own sin.
Yet he did not put the sons of the murderers to death, but acted according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, where the LORD commanded: “Fathers must not be put to death for their children, and children must not be put to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin.”
And the statutes, and the ordinances, and the law, and the commandment, which he wrote for you, ye shall observe to do for
evermore; and ye shall not fear other gods.
And you must always be careful to observe the statutes, ordinances, laws, and commandments He wrote for you. Do not worship other gods.
But if ye say unto me, We trust in the LORD our God: is not that he, whose high places and whose altars
Hezekiah hath taken away, and hath said to Judah and Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem?
But if you say to me, ‘We trust in the LORD our God,’ is He not the One whose high places and altars
Hezekiah has removed, saying to Judah and Jerusalem: ‘You
must worship before this altar in Jerusalem’?
And out of the city he took an officer that was set over the men of war, and five men of them that were in the king’s presence, which were found in the city, and the principal
scribe of the host, which
mustered the people of the land, and
threescore men of the people of the land that were found in the city:
Of those still in the city, he took a court official who had been appointed over the men of war, as well as five royal advisors. He also took the
scribe of the captain of the army, who had
enlisted the people of the land, and sixty men who were found in the city.
The sons of Merari; Mahli, and Mushi. And these are the families of the Levites according to their fathers.
The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. These are the clans of the Levites listed according to their fathers:
And these are they whom David set over the service of song in the house of the LORD, after that the ark had rest.
These are the men David put in charge of the music in the house of the LORD after the ark rested there.
The son of Mahli, the son of Mushi, the son of Merari, the son of Levi.
the son of Mahli, the son of Mushi, the son of Merari, the son of Levi.
And these are the singers, chief of the fathers of the Levites, who remaining in the chambers were free: for they were employed in that work day and night.
Those who were
musicians, the heads of
Levite families, stayed in the temple chambers and were
exempt from other duties because they were on duty day and night.
And said unto them, Ye are the chief of the fathers of the Levites:
sanctify yourselves, both ye and your brethren, that ye may bring up the ark of the LORD God of Israel unto the place that I have prepared for it.
And he said to them, “You are the heads of the
Levitical families. You and your relatives
must consecrate yourselves so that you may bring the ark of the LORD, the God of Israel, to the place I have prepared for it.
And David spake to the chief of the Levites to
appoint their brethren to be the singers with instruments of
musick,
psalteries and harps and cymbals, sounding, by lifting up the voice with joy.
David also told the leaders of the Levites to
appoint their relatives as singers to lift up their voices with joy, accompanied by
musical instruments—harps, lyres, and cymbals.
So the singers, Heman,
Asaph, and
Ethan, were appointed to sound with cymbals of brass;
The
musicians Heman,
Asaph, and
Ethan were to sound the bronze cymbals.
And Mattithiah, and Elipheleh, and Mikneiah, and Obed-
edom, and Jeiel, and Azaziah, with harps on the Sheminith to
excel.
And Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-
edom, Jeiel, and Azaziah were to lead the
music with lyres according to Sheminith.
And Chenaniah, chief of the Levites, was for song: he
instructed about the song, because he was skilful.
Chenaniah the head
Levite was the director of the
music because he was highly skilled.
And David was clothed with a
robe of fine linen, and all the Levites that bare the ark, and the singers, and Chenaniah the master of the song with the singers: David also had upon him an
ephod of linen.
Now David was dressed in a
robe of fine linen, as were all the Levites who were carrying the ark, as well as the singers and Chenaniah, the director of
music for the singers. David also
wore a linen
ephod.
Thus all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the LORD with
shouting, and with sound of the
cornet, and with
trumpets, and with cymbals, making a noise with
psalteries and harps.
So all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the LORD with
shouting, with the sounding of rams’ horns and
trumpets, and with cymbals and the
music of harps and lyres.
And with them Heman and
Jeduthun with
trumpets and cymbals for those that should make a sound, and with
musical instruments of God. And the sons of
Jeduthun were
porters.
Heman and
Jeduthun had with them
trumpets and cymbals for the
music and instruments for the songs of God. And the sons of
Jeduthun were stationed at the gate.
And it shall come to pass, when thy days be
expired that thou
must go to be with thy fathers, that I will raise up thy seed after thee, which shall be of thy sons; and I will establish his kingdom.
And when your days are fulfilled and you go to be with your fathers, I will raise up your
descendant after you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom.
So
Gad came to David, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Choose thee
So
Gad went and said to David, “This is what the LORD says: ‘You

And David said, Solomon my son is young and tender, and the house that is to be builded for the LORD
must be exceeding
magnifical, of fame and of glory throughout all countries: I will therefore now make preparation for it. So David prepared abundantly before his death.
And David said, “My son Solomon is young and inexperienced, and the house to be built for the LORD
must be exceedingly magnificent—famous and glorious throughout all lands. Therefore I
must make preparations for it.” So David made
lavish preparations before his death.
The sons of Merari; Mahli, and
Mushi. The sons of Mahli;
Eleazar, and
Kish.
The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi.
The sons of Mushi; Mahli, and Eder, and Jeremoth, three.
The sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder, and Jeremoth—three in all.
The sons of Merari were Mahli and Mushi: the sons of Jaaziah; Beno.
The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. The son of Jaaziah: Beno.
The sons also of Mushi; Mahli, and Eder, and Jerimoth. These were the sons of the Levites after the house of their fathers.
And the sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder, and Jerimoth. These were the sons of the Levites, according to their families.
All these were under the hands of their father for song in the house of the LORD, with cymbals,
psalteries, and harps, for the service of the house of God, according to the king’s order to
Asaph,
Jeduthun, and Heman.
All these were under the direction of their fathers for the
music of the house of the LORD with cymbals, harps, and lyres, for the service of the house of God.
Asaph,
Jeduthun, and Heman were under the direction of the king.
It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and
thanking the LORD; and when they lifted up their voice with the
trumpets and cymbals and instruments of
musick, and praised the LORD, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever: that then the house was filled with a cloud, even the house of the LORD;
The trumpeters and singers joined together to praise and
thank the LORD with one voice. They lifted up their voices, accompanied by
trumpets, cymbals, and
musical instruments, in praise to the LORD: “For He is good; His loving devotion endures
forever.” And the temple, the house of the LORD, was filled with a cloud
And the priests waited on their offices: the Levites also with instruments of
musick of the LORD, which David the king had made to praise the LORD, because his mercy endureth for ever, when David praised by their ministry; and the priests sounded
trumpets before them, and all Israel stood.
The priests stood at their posts, as did the Levites with the
musical instruments of the LORD, which King David had made for giving
thanks to the LORD and with which David had offered praise, saying, “For His loving devotion endures
forever.” Across from the Levites, the priests sounded
trumpets, and all the Israelites were standing.
And Solomon brought up the daughter of Pharaoh out of the city of David unto the house that he had built for her: for he said, My wife shall not dwell in the house of David king of Israel, because the places are holy,
whereunto the ark of the LORD hath come.
Solomon brought the daughter of Pharaoh up from the City of David to the palace he had built for her. For he said, “My wife must not live in the house of David king of Israel, because the places the ark of the LORD has entered are holy.”
Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren: return every man to his house: for this thing is done of me. And they obeyed the words of the LORD, and returned from going against
Jeroboam.
that this is what the LORD says: ‘You are not to go up and fight against your brothers. Each of you
must return home, for this word is from Me.’” So they
listened to the words of the LORD and turned back from going against
Jeroboam.
And the king said to him, How many times shall I
adjure thee that thou say nothing but the truth to me in the name of the LORD?
But the king said to him, “How many times
must I make you
swear not to tell me anything but the truth in the name of the LORD?”
And he charged them, saying, Thus shall ye do in the fear of the LORD, faithfully, and with a perfect heart.
He commanded them, saying, “You must serve faithfully and wholeheartedly in the fear of the LORD.
And all the congregation made a covenant with the king in the house of God. And he said unto them, Behold, the king’s son shall reign, as the LORD hath said of the sons of David.
the whole assembly made a covenant with the king in the house of God. “Behold, the king’s son!” said Jehoiada. “He must reign, just as the LORD promised concerning the descendants of David.
And the Levites shall compass the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand; and
whosoever else cometh into the house, he shall be put to death: but be ye with the king when he cometh in, and when he goeth out.
The Levites
must surround the king with weapons in hand, and
anyone who enters the temple
must be put to death. You
must stay close to the king wherever he goes.”
And she looked, and, behold, the king stood at his
pillar at the entering in, and the princes and the
trumpets by the king: and all the people of the land
rejoiced, and sounded with
trumpets, also the singers with instruments of
musick, and such as taught to sing praise. Then
Athaliah rent her clothes, and said, Treason, Treason.
And she looked out and saw the king standing by his
pillar at the entrance. The officers and trumpeters were beside the king, and all the people of the land were
rejoicing and blowing
trumpets, while the singers with
musical instruments were leading the praises. Then
Athaliah tore her clothes and
screamed, “Treason, treason!”
Then Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds that were set over the host, and said unto them, Have her forth of the ranges: and
whoso followeth her, let him be slain with the sword. For the priest said,
Slay her not in the house of the LORD.
And Jehoiada the priest sent out the commanders of hundreds in charge of the army, saying, “Bring her out between the ranks, and put to the sword
anyone who follows her.” For the priest had said, “She
must not be put to death in the house of the LORD.”
But he
slew not their children, but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses, where the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, neither shall the children die for the fathers, but every man shall die for his own sin.
Yet he did not put their sons to death, but acted according to what is written in the Law, in the Book of Moses, where the LORD commanded: “Fathers must not be put to death for their children, and children must not be put to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin.”
And said unto them, Ye shall not bring in the
captives hither: for whereas we have
offended against the LORD already, ye intend to add more to our sins and to our
trespass: for our
trespass is great, and there is fierce wrath against Israel.
“You
must not bring the
captives here,” they said, “for you are
proposing to bring guilt upon us from the LORD and to add to our sins and our guilt. For our guilt is great, and fierce anger is upon Israel.”
Hath not the same
Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, saying, Ye shall worship before one altar, and burn incense upon it?
Did not
Hezekiah himself remove His high places and His altars and say to Judah and Jerusalem, ‘You
must worship before one altar, and on it you shall burn sacrifices’?
And the men did the work faithfully: and the overseers of them were Jahath and
Obadiah, the Levites, of the sons of Merari; and
Zechariah and Meshullam, of the sons of the Kohathites, to set it forward; and other of the Levites, all that could skill of instruments of
musick.
And the men did the work faithfully. The Levites overseeing them were Jahath and
Obadiah, descendants of Merari, and
Zechariah and Meshullam, descendants of
Kohath. Other Levites, all skilled with
musical instruments,
But
Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the LORD God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.
But
Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the other heads of the families of Israel replied, “You have no part with us in building a house for our God, since we alone
must build it for the LORD, the God of Israel, as Cyrus king of Persia has commanded us.”
And also let the golden and silver vessels of the house of God, which
Nebuchadnezzar took forth out of the temple which is at Jerusalem, and brought unto Babylon, be restored, and brought again unto the temple which is at Jerusalem, every one to his place, and place them in the house of God.
Furthermore, the gold and silver articles of the house of God, which
Nebuchadnezzar took from the temple in Jerusalem and carried to Babylon,
must also be returned to the temple in Jerusalem and deposited in the house of God.
Now therefore, Tatnai, governor beyond the river, Shethar-boznai, and your companions the
Apharsachites, which are beyond the river, be ye far from thence:
Therefore
Darius decreed: To Tattenai governor of the region west of the Euphrates, Shethar-bozenai, and your associates and officials in the region: You
must stay away from that place!
Moreover I make a decree what ye shall do to the elders of these Jews for the building of this house of God: that of the king’s goods, even of the tribute beyond the river,
forthwith expenses be given unto these men, that they be not hindered.
I
hereby decree what you
must do for these elders of the Jews who are rebuilding this house of God: The cost is to be paid in full to these men from the royal treasury out of the taxes of the provinces west of the Euphrates, so that the work will not be hindered.
And that which they have need of, both young bullocks, and rams, and lambs, for the burnt offerings of the God of heaven, wheat, salt, wine, and oil, according to the appointment of the priests which are at Jerusalem, let it be given them day by day without fail:
Whatever is needed—young bulls, rams, and lambs for burnt offerings to the God of heaven, as well as wheat, salt, wine, and oil, as requested by the priests in Jerusalem—must be given to them daily without fail.
The vessels also that are given thee for the service of the house of thy God, those deliver thou before the God of Jerusalem.
You must deliver to the God of Jerusalem all the articles given to you for the service of the house of your God.
And I, even I
Artaxerxes the king, do make a decree to all the treasurers which are beyond the river, that
whatsoever Ezra the priest, the
scribe of the law of the God of heaven, shall require of you, it be done speedily,
I, King
Artaxerxes, decree to all the treasurers west of the Euphrates: Whatever
Ezra the priest, the
scribe of the Law of the God of heaven, may require of you, it
must be provided
promptly,
