On the
twelfth day Ahira the son of Enan, prince of the children of
Naphtali, offered:
On the
twelfth day Ahira son of Enan, the leader of the Naphtalites, drew
near.
And there went forth a wind from the LORD, and brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, as it were a day’s journey on this side, and as it were a day’s journey on the other side, round about the camp, and as it were two cubits high upon the face of the earth.
Now a wind sent by the LORD came up, drove in
quail from the sea, and brought them
near the camp, about two cubits above the surface of the ground, for a day’s journey in every direction around the camp.
And he spake unto
Korah and unto all his company, saying, Even to
morrow the LORD will
shew who are his, and who is holy; and will cause him to come
near unto him: even him whom he hath chosen will he cause to come
near unto him.
Then he said to
Korah and all his followers, “
Tomorrow morning the LORD will
reveal who belongs to Him and who is holy, and He will bring that person
near to Himself. The one He chooses, He will bring
near to Himself.
Seemeth it but a small thing unto you, that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself to do the service of the tabernacle of the LORD, and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them?
Is it not enough for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the congregation of Israel and brought you near to Himself to perform the work at the LORD’s tabernacle, and to stand before the congregation to minister to them?
And he hath brought thee near to him, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee: and seek ye the priesthood also?
He has brought you near, you and all your fellow Levites, but you are seeking the priesthood as well.
To be a
memorial unto the children of Israel, that no stranger, which is not of the seed of Aaron, come
near to offer incense before the LORD; that he be not as
Korah, and as his company: as the LORD said to him by the hand of Moses.
just as the LORD commanded him through Moses. This was to be a reminder to the Israelites that no outsider who is not a
descendant of Aaron should approach to offer incense before the LORD, lest he become like
Korah and his followers.
Whosoever cometh any thing
near unto the tabernacle of the LORD shall die: shall we be consumed with dying?
Anyone who comes
near the tabernacle of the LORD will die. Are we all going to perish?”
And they shall keep thy charge, and the charge of all the tabernacle: only they shall not come
nigh the vessels of the sanctuary and the altar, that neither they, nor ye also, die.
And they shall attend to your duties and to all the duties of the Tent; but they must not come near to the furnishings of the sanctuary or the altar, or both they and you will die.
And they shall be joined unto thee, and keep the charge of the tabernacle of the congregation, for all the service of the tabernacle: and a stranger shall not come
nigh unto you.
They are to join you and attend to the duties of the Tent of Meeting, doing all the work at the Tent; but no outsider may come near you.
Therefore thou and thy sons with thee shall keep your priest’s office for every thing of the altar, and within the
vail; and ye shall serve: I have given your priest’s office unto you as a service of gift: and the stranger that cometh
nigh shall be put to death.
But only you and your sons shall attend to your priesthood for everything concerning the altar and what is inside the
veil, and you are to perform that service. I am giving you the work of the priesthood as a gift, but any outsider who comes
near the sanctuary must be put to death.”
Neither must the children of Israel henceforth come
nigh the tabernacle of the congregation, lest they bear sin, and die.
No longer may the Israelites come
near to the Tent of Meeting, or they will
incur guilt and die.
And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in mount
Hor, by the coast of the land of
Edom, saying,
And at Mount
Hor,
near the border of the land of
Edom, the LORD said to Moses and Aaron,
And the children of Israel set forward, and pitched in the plains of Moab on this side Jordan by
Jericho.
Then the Israelites traveled on and camped in the plains of Moab
near the Jordan, across from
Jericho.
I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not
nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a
Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall
smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of
Sheth.
I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not
near. A star will come forth from Jacob, and a
scepter will arise from Israel. He will
crush the skulls of Moab and strike down all the sons of
Sheth.
And Moses and
Eleazar the priest spake with them in the plains of Moab by Jordan
near Jericho, saying,
So on the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from
Jericho, Moses and
Eleazar the priest issued the instruction,
These are they that were numbered by Moses and
Eleazar the priest, who numbered the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by Jordan
near Jericho.
These were the ones numbered by Moses and
Eleazar the priest when they counted the Israelites on the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from
Jericho.
And they brought the
captives, and the prey, and the
spoil, unto Moses, and
Eleazar the priest, and unto the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the camp at the plains of Moab, which are by Jordan
near Jericho.
They brought the
captives, spoils, and
plunder to Moses, to
Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of Israel at the camp on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan across from
Jericho.
And the officers which were over thousands of the host, the captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, came near unto Moses:
Then the officers who were over the units of the army—the commanders of thousands and of hundreds—approached Moses
And they came near unto him, and said, We will build sheepfolds here for our cattle, and cities for our little ones:
Then the Gadites and Reubenites approached Moses and said, “We want to build sheepfolds here for our
livestock and cities for our little ones.
And they removed from Etham, and turned again unto
Pi-hahiroth, which is before
Baal-zephon: and they pitched before
Migdol.
They set out from Etham and turned back to
Pi-hahiroth, opposite
Baal-zephon, and they camped
near Migdol.
And they departed from the mountains of Abarim, and pitched in the plains of Moab by Jordan
near Jericho.
They set out from the mountains of Abarim and camped on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from
Jericho.
And the LORD spake unto Moses in the plains of Moab by Jordan
near Jericho, saying,
On the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from
Jericho, the LORD said to Moses,
The two tribes and the half tribe have received their inheritance on this side Jordan
near Jericho eastward, toward the
sunrising.
These two and a half tribes have received their inheritance across the Jordan from
Jericho, toward the
sunrise.”
And the LORD spake unto Moses in the plains of Moab by Jordan
near Jericho, saying,
Again the LORD spoke to Moses on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from
Jericho:
And the chief fathers of the families of the children of
Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of
Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came
near, and spake before Moses, and before the princes, the chief fathers of the children of Israel:
Now the family heads of the clan of
Gilead son of Machir son of
Manasseh, one of the clans of Joseph, approached Moses and the leaders who were the heads of the
Israelite families and addressed them,
These are the commandments and the judgments, which the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses unto the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by Jordan
near Jericho.
These are the commandments and ordinances that the LORD gave the Israelites through Moses on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from
Jericho.
And ye came near unto me every one of you, and said, We will send men before us, and they shall search us out the land, and bring us word again by what way we must go up, and into what cities we shall come.
Then all of you approached me and said, “Let us send men
ahead of us to search out the land and bring us word of what route to follow and which cities to enter.”
Only unto the land of the children of
Ammon thou camest not, nor unto any place of the river
Jabbok, nor unto the cities in the mountains, nor unto
whatsoever the LORD our God
forbad us.
But you did not go
near the land of the
Ammonites, or the land along the banks of the
Jabbok River, or the cities of the hill country, or any place that the LORD our God had forbidden.
For what nation is there so great, who hath God so
nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for?
For what nation is great enough to have a god as near to them as the LORD our God is to us whenever we call on Him?
And ye came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire unto the midst of heaven, with darkness, clouds, and thick darkness.
You came
near and stood at the base of the mountain, a mountain
blazing with fire to the heavens, with black clouds and deep darkness.
And it came to pass, when ye heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, (for the mountain did burn with fire,) that ye came near unto me, even all the heads of your tribes, and your elders;
And when you heard the voice out of the darkness while the mountain was
blazing with fire, all the heads of your tribes and your elders approached me,
Go thou near, and hear all that the LORD our God shall say: and speak thou unto us all that the LORD our God shall speak unto thee; and we will hear it, and do it.
Go
near and
listen to all that the LORD our God says. Then you can tell us everything the LORD our God tells you; we will
listen and obey.”
Are they not on the other side Jordan, by the way where the sun goeth down, in the land of the
Canaanites, which dwell in the
champaign over against
Gilgal, beside the plains of Moreh?
Are not these mountains across the Jordan, west of the road toward the
sunset, in the land of the
Canaanites who live in the Arabah opposite
Gilgal near the Oak of Moreh?
Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you,
nigh unto thee, or far off from thee, from the one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth;
the gods of the peoples around you, whether near or far, whether from one end of the earth or the other),
Beware that there be not a thought in thy wicked heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy poor brother, and thou givest him
nought; and he cry unto the LORD against thee, and it be sin unto thee.
Be careful not to
harbor this wicked thought in your heart: “The seventh year, the year of release, is
near,” so that you look upon your poor brother begrudgingly and give him nothing. He will cry out to the LORD against you, and you will be guilty of sin.
Thou shalt not plant thee a
grove of any trees
near unto the altar of the LORD thy God, which thou shalt make thee.
Do not set up any wooden Asherah pole next to the altar you will build for the LORD your God,
Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations.
This is how you are to treat all the cities that are far away from you and do not belong to the nations nearby.
And it shall be, that the city which is next unto the slain man, even the elders of that city shall take an
heifer, which hath not been wrought with, and which hath not drawn in the yoke;
Then the elders of the city
nearest the
victim shall take a
heifer that has never been yoked or used for work,
And the priests the sons of Levi shall come
near; for them the LORD thy God hath chosen to minister unto him, and to
bless in the name of the LORD; and by their word shall every controversy and every stroke be tried:
And the priests, the sons of Levi, shall come forward, for the LORD your God has chosen them to serve Him and
pronounce blessings in His name and to give a ruling in every dispute and case of
assault.
And all the elders of that city, that are next unto the slain man, shall wash their hands over the
heifer that is
beheaded in the valley:
Then all the elders of the city
nearest the
victim shall wash their hands by the stream over the
heifer whose neck has been broken,
And if thy brother be not
nigh unto thee, or if thou know him not, then thou shalt bring it unto thine own house, and it shall be with thee until thy brother seek after it, and thou shalt restore it to him again.
If your brother does not live near you, or if you do not know who he is, you are to take the animal home to remain with you until your brother comes seeking it; then you can return it to him.
When men
strive together one with another, and the wife of the one draweth
near for to deliver her husband out of the hand of him that smiteth him, and putteth forth her hand, and taketh him by the secrets:
If two men are fighting, and the wife of one steps in to
rescue her husband from the one striking him, and she reaches out her hand and grabs his
genitals,
But the word is very
nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it.
But the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you may obey it.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Behold, thy days approach that thou must die: call Joshua, and present
yourselves in the tabernacle of the congregation, that I may give him a charge. And Moses and Joshua went, and presented themselves in the tabernacle of the congregation.
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, the time of your death is
near. Call Joshua and present
yourselves at the Tent of Meeting, so that I may commission him.” So Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves at the Tent of Meeting.
To me belongeth
vengeance, and recompence; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their
calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make
haste.
Vengeance is Mine; I will repay. In due time their foot will slip; for their day of
disaster is
near, and their
doom is coming quickly.”
Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure: come not
near unto it, that ye may know the way by which ye must go: for ye have not passed this way
heretofore.
But keep a distance of about two thousand cubits between
yourselves and the ark. Do not go
near it, so that you can see the way to go, since you have never traveled this way before.”
And it came to pass, when Joshua was by
Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our
adversaries?
Now when Joshua was
near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in His hand. Joshua approached Him and asked, “Are You for us or for our enemies?”
And Joshua sent men from
Jericho to
Ai, which is beside Beth-
aven, on the east side of
Bethel, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and view the country. And the men went up and viewed
Ai.
Meanwhile, Joshua sent men from
Jericho to
Ai, which is
near Beth-
aven to the east of
Bethel, and told them, “Go up and
spy out the land.” So the men went up and
spied out
Ai.
And the men of Israel said unto the
Hivites,
Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you?
But the men of Israel said to the
Hivites, “Perhaps you dwell
near us. How can we make a treaty with you?”
Now it came to pass, when Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken
Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to
Jericho and her king, so he had done to
Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of
Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them;
Now Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had captured
Ai and devoted it to destruction—doing to
Ai and its king as he had done to
Jericho and its king—and that the people of
Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were living
near them.
And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.
When they had brought the kings to Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the army commanders who had accompanied him, “Come here and put your feet on the necks of these kings.” So the commanders came forward and put their feet on their necks.
And their coast was Jazer, and all the cities of
Gilead, and half the land of the children of
Ammon, unto Aroer that is before Rabbah;
The territory of Jazer, all the cities of
Gilead, and half the land of the
Ammonites as far as Aroer,
near Rabbah;
From
Ekron even unto the sea, all that lay
near Ashdod, with their villages:
from
Ekron to the sea, all the cities
near Ashdod, along with their villages;
And they came
near before
Eleazar the priest, and before Joshua the son of
Nun, and before the princes, saying, The LORD commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brethren. Therefore according to the commandment of the LORD he gave them an inheritance among the brethren of their father.
They approached
Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of
Nun, and the leaders, and said, “The LORD commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brothers.” So Joshua gave them an inheritance among their father’s brothers, in keeping with the command of the LORD.
And the coast of
Manasseh was from Asher to Michmethah, that lieth before
Shechem; and the border went along on the right hand unto the inhabitants of En-tappuah.
Now the border of
Manasseh went from Asher to Michmethath
near Shechem, then southward to include the inhabitants of En-tappuah.
And the border went over from thence toward
Luz, to the side of
Luz, which is
Bethel, southward; and the border descended to Ataroth-
adar,
near the hill that lieth on the south side of the
nether Beth-horon.
From there the border crossed over to the southern slope of
Luz (that is,
Bethel) and went down to Ataroth-addar on the hill south of Lower Beth-horon.
Then came
near the heads of the fathers of the Levites unto
Eleazar the priest, and unto Joshua the son of
Nun, and unto the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel;
Now the family heads of the Levites approached
Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of
Nun, and the heads of the other tribes of Israel
And when they came unto the borders of Jordan, that are in the land of
Canaan, the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad and the half tribe of
Manasseh built there an altar by Jordan, a great altar to see to.
And when they came to Geliloth
near the Jordan in the land of
Canaan, the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh built an imposing altar there by the Jordan.
And the children of Israel heard say, Behold, the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad and the half tribe of
Manasseh have built an altar over against the land of
Canaan, in the borders of Jordan, at the passage of the children of Israel.
Then the Israelites received the report: “Behold, the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh have built an altar on the border of the land of
Canaan, at Geliloth
near the Jordan on the
Israelite side.”
And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God, and took a great stone, and set it up there under an oak, that was by the sanctuary of the LORD.
Joshua recorded these things in the Book of the Law of God. Then he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak that was near the sanctuary of the LORD.
And the children of the Kenite, Moses’ father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lieth in the south of
Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.
Now the descendants of Moses’ father-in-law, the Kenite, went up with the men of Judah from the City of Palms to the Wilderness of Judah in the Negev
near Arad. They went to live among the people.
But he himself turned again from the
quarries that were by
Gilgal, and said, I have a secret
errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.
But upon reaching the idols
near Gilgal, he himself turned back and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.” “Silence,” said the king, and all his attendants left him.
Now
Heber the Kenite, which was of the children of Hobab the father in law of Moses, had severed himself from the
Kenites, and pitched his tent unto the plain of Zaanaim, which is by Kedesh.
Now
Heber the Kenite had moved away from the
Kenites, the descendants of Hobab the father-in-law of Moses, and had pitched his tent by the great tree of Zaanannim, which was
near Kedesh.
Then Jerubbaal, who is
Gideon, and all the people that were with him, rose up early, and pitched beside the well of Harod: so that the host of the Midianites were on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.
Early in the morning Jerubbaal (that is,
Gideon) and all the men with him camped beside the spring of Harod. And the camp of
Midian was north of them in the valley
near the hill of Moreh.
And the three hundred
blew the
trumpets, and the LORD set every man’s sword against his fellow, even throughout all the host: and the host fled to Beth-
shittah in Zererath, and to the border of
Abel-meholah, unto Tabbath.
And when the three hundred rams’ horns sounded, the LORD set all the men in the camp against one another with their swords. The army fled to Beth-
shittah toward Zererah as far as the border of
Abel-meholah
near Tabbath.
Then the Philistines went up, and pitched in Judah, and spread themselves in Lehi.
Then the Philistines went up, camped in Judah, and
deployed themselves
near the town of Lehi.
When they were by the house of
Micah, they knew the voice of the young man the
Levite: and they turned in thither, and said unto him, Who brought thee
hither? and what makest thou in this place? and what hast thou here?
And while they were
near Micah’s house, they recognized the voice of the young
Levite; so they went over and asked him, “Who brought you here? What are you doing in this place? Why are you here?”
And when they were a good way from the house of
Micah, the men that were in the houses
near to
Micah’s house were gathered together, and overtook the children of
Dan.
After they were some distance from
Micah’s house, the men in the houses
near Micah’s house
mobilized and overtook the Danites.
And there was no deliverer, because it was far from Zidon, and they had no business with any man; and it was in the valley that lieth by Beth-rehob. And they built a city, and dwelt therein.
There was no one to deliver them, because the city was far from
Sidon and had no alliance with
anyone; it was in a valley
near Beth-rehob. And the Danites rebuilt the city and lived there.
And when they were by
Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn in into this city of the Jebusites, and
lodge in it.
When they were
near Jebus and the day was almost gone, the servant said to his master, “Please, let us stop at this Jebusite city and
spend the night here.”
And he said unto his servant, Come, and let us draw
near to one of these places to
lodge all night, in Gibeah, or in
Ramah.
He continued, “Come, let us try to reach one of these towns to
spend the night in Gibeah or
Ramah.”
And they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down upon them when they were by Gibeah, which belongeth to Benjamin.
So they continued on their journey, and the sun set as they neared Gibeah in Benjamin.
And the children of Israel rose up in the morning, and
encamped against Gibeah.
The next morning the Israelites set out and camped near Gibeah.
(And the children of Israel went up and
wept before the LORD until even, and asked counsel of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up again to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother? And the LORD said, Go up against him.)
They went up and
wept before the LORD until evening, inquiring of Him, “Should we again draw
near for battle against our brothers the Benjamites?” And the LORD answered, “Go up against them.”
And the children of Israel came near against the children of Benjamin the second day.
On the second day the Israelites advanced against the Benjamites.
And there came against Gibeah ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and the battle was
sore: but they knew not that evil was
near them.
Then 10,000 select men from all Israel made a
frontal assault against Gibeah, and the battle was fierce. But the Benjamites did not
realize that
disaster was upon them.
And
Naomi said unto her daughter in law, Blessed be he of the LORD, who hath not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead. And
Naomi said unto her, The man is
near of
kin unto us, one of our next
kinsmen.
Then
Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, “May he be blessed by the LORD, who has not withdrawn His kindness from the living or the dead.”
Naomi continued, “The man is a close relative. He is one of our
kinsman-redeemers.”
“Who are you?” he asked. “I am your servant
Ruth,” she replied. “Spread the corner of your garment over me, for you are a
kinsman-
redeemer.”
And his daughter in law,
Phinehas’ wife, was with child,
near to be delivered: and when she heard the
tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and
travailed; for her pains came upon her.
Now
Eli’s daughter-in-law, the wife of
Phinehas, was
pregnant and about to give birth. When she heard the news of the capture of God’s ark and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband, she
collapsed and gave birth, for her labor pains overtook her.
And the
cart came into the field of Joshua, a Beth-
shemite, and stood there, where there was a great stone: and they
clave the wood of the
cart, and offered the
kine a burnt offering unto the LORD.
The
cart came to the field of Joshua of Beth-shemesh and stopped there
near a large rock. The people
chopped up the
cart and offered the cows as a burnt offering to the LORD.
And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew
near to battle against Israel: but the LORD
thundered with a great
thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and
discomfited them; and they were
smitten before Israel.
As the Philistines drew
near to fight against Israel, Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering. But that day the LORD
thundered loudly against the Philistines and threw them into such confusion that they fled before Israel.
Then Saul drew
near to Samuel in the gate, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, where the
seer’s house is.
Saul approached Samuel in the
gateway and asked, “Would you please tell me where the
seer’s house is?”
And when Samuel had caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was taken.
Thus Samuel had all the tribes of Israel come forward, and the tribe of Benjamin was selected.
When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come
near by their families, the family of Matri was taken, and Saul the son of
Kish was taken: and when they sought him, he could not be found.
Then he had the tribe of Benjamin come forward by its clans, and the clan of Matri was selected. Finally, Saul son of
Kish was selected. But when they looked for him, they could not find him.
And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and
spoil them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do
whatsoever seemeth good unto thee. Then said the priest, Let us draw
near hither unto God.
And Saul said, “Let us go down after the Philistines by night and
plunder them until
dawn, leaving no man alive!” “Do what seems good to you,” the troops replied. But the priest said, “We must
consult God here.”
And Saul said, Draw ye
near hither, all the chief of the people: and know and see wherein this sin hath been this day.
Therefore Saul said, “Come here, all you leaders of the troops, and let us
investigate how this sin has occurred
today.
And the
Philistine drew
near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.
For forty days the
Philistine came forward every morning and evening to take his stand.
And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the
brook, and put them in a
shepherd’s
bag which he had, even in a
scrip; and his
sling was in his hand: and he drew
near to the
Philistine.
And David took his staff in his hand, selected five smooth stones from the
brook, and put them in the
pouch of his
shepherd’s
bag. And with his
sling in hand, he approached the
Philistine.
And the
Philistine came on and drew
near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him.
Now the
Philistine came closer and closer to David, with his shield-bearer before him.
They were a wall unto us both by night and day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep.
They were a wall around us, both day and night, the whole time we were
herding our sheep
near them.
And David came to the two hundred men, which were so
faint that they could not follow David, whom they had made also to
abide at the
brook Besor: and they went forth to meet David, and to meet the people that were with him: and when David came
near to the people, he
saluted them.
When David came to the two hundred men who had been too exhausted to follow him from the
Brook of Besor, they came out to meet him and the troops with him. As David approached the men, he
greeted them,
And David called one of the young men, and said, Go
near, and fall upon him. And he
smote him that he died.
Then David summoned one of the young men and said, “Go,
execute him!” So the young man struck him down, and he died.
And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of
Hebron.
David also took the men who were with him, each with his household, and they settled in the towns
near Hebron.
And it came to pass after two full years, that
Absalom had sheepshearers in
Baal-hazor, which is beside Ephraim: and
Absalom invited all the king’s sons.
Two years later, when
Absalom’s sheepshearers were at
Baal-hazor
near Ephraim, he invited all the sons of the king.
Therefore he said unto his servants, See,
Joab’s field is
near mine, and he hath barley there; go and set it on fire. And
Absalom’s servants set the field on fire.
Then
Absalom said to his servants, “Look,
Joab’s field is next to mine, and he has barley there. Go and set it on fire!” And
Absalom’s servants set the field on fire.
And the
watchman cried, and told the king. And the king said, If he be alone, there is
tidings in his mouth. And he came
apace, and drew
near.
So he called out and told the king. “If he is alone,” the king replied, “he bears good news.” As the first
runner drew
near,
Let thy servant, I pray thee, turn back again, that I may die in mine own city, and be buried by the grave of my father and of my mother. But behold thy servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good unto thee.
Please let your servant return, that I may die in my own city near the tomb of my father and mother. But here is your servant Chimham. Let him cross over with my lord the king, and do for him what is good in your sight.”
And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, Because the king is
near of
kin to us: wherefore then be ye
angry for this matter? have we eaten at all of the king’s cost? or hath he given us any gift?
And all the men of Judah replied to the men of Israel, “We did this because the king is our relative. Why does this anger you? Have we ever eaten at the king’s expense or received anything for ourselves?”
