Wherefore the king said unto me, Why is thy countenance
sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very
sore afraid,
so the king said to me, “Why is your face
sad, though you are not ill? This could
only be
sadness of the heart.” I was
overwhelmed with fear
And I arose in the night, I and some few men with me; neither told I any man what my God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem: neither was there any beast with me, save the beast that I
rode upon.
I set out at night with a few men. I did not tell
anyone what my God had laid on my heart to do for Jerusalem. The
only animal with me was the one on which I was riding.
And Memucan answered before the king and the princes, Vashti the queen hath not done wrong to the king
only, but also to all the princes, and to all the people that are in all the provinces of the king
Ahasuerus.
And in the presence of the king and his princes, Memucan replied, “Queen Vashti has wronged not
only the king, but all the princes and the peoples in all the provinces of King
Xerxes.
And came even before the king’s gate: for none might enter into the king’s gate clothed with
sackcloth.
But he went
only as far as the king’s gate, because the law prohibited
anyone wearing
sackcloth from entering that gate.
All the king’s servants, and the people of the king’s provinces, do know, that
whosoever, whether man or woman, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law of his to put him to death, except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden
sceptre, that he may live: but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.
“All the royal officials and the people of the king’s provinces know that one law applies to every man or woman who approaches the king in the inner court without being summoned—that he be put to death.
Only if the king extends the gold
scepter may that person live. But I have not been summoned to appear before the king for the past thirty days.”
For
Mordecai the
Jew was next unto king
Ahasuerus, and great among the Jews, and accepted of the multitude of his brethren, seeking the wealth of his people, and speaking peace to all his seed.
For
Mordecai the
Jew was second
only to King
Xerxes, preeminent among the Jews and highly favored by his many
kinsmen, seeking the good of his people and speaking peace to all his countrymen.
And the LORD said unto
Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power;
only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So
Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.
“Very well,” said the LORD to
Satan. “Everything he has is in your hands, but you must not lay a hand on the man himself.” Then
Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.
And the
Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away;
yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I
only am escaped alone to tell thee.

Sabeans swooped down and took them away. They put the servants to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”

While he was still speaking, another
messenger came and reported: “The fire of God fell from heaven. It burned and consumed the sheep and the servants, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away,
yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I
only am escaped alone to tell thee.
While he was still speaking, another
messenger came and reported: “The Chaldeans formed three bands,
raided the camels, and took them away. They put the servants to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and
smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I
only am escaped alone to tell thee.

collapsed on the young people and they are dead, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the
foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.
“You speak as a
foolish woman speaks,” he told her. “Should we accept from God
only good and not
adversity?” In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.
Let that day be darkness; let not God regard it from above, neither let the light
shine upon it.
If
only that day had turned to darkness! May God above disregard it; may no light
shine upon it.
As for that night, let darkness seize upon it; let it not be joined unto the days of the year, let it not come into the number of the months.
If only darkness had taken that night away! May it not appear among the days of the year; may it never be entered in any of the months.
O that my grief were throughly
weighed, and my
calamity laid in the balances together!
“If
only my grief could be
weighed and placed with my
calamity on the scales.
Oh that I might have my request; and that God would grant me the thing that I long for!
If
only my request were granted and God would
fulfill my hope:
Whom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answer, but I would make
supplication to my judge.
For even if I were right, I could not answer. I could
only beg my Judge for mercy.
I should have been as though I had not been; I should have been carried from the
womb to the grave.
If
only I had never come to be, but had been carried from the
womb to the grave.
But oh that God would speak, and open his lips against thee;
But if only God would speak and open His lips against you,
Because thou shalt
forget thy misery, and remember it as waters that pass away:
For you will
forget your misery, recalling it
only as waters gone by.
Oh that ye would altogether hold your peace! and it should be your wisdom.
If only you would remain silent; for that would be your wisdom!
Only do not two things unto me: then will I not hide myself from thee.
Only grant these two things to me, so that I need not hide from You:
Oh that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest
appoint me a set time, and remember me!
If
only You would hide me in
Sheol and
conceal me until Your anger has passed! If
only You would
appoint a time for me and then remember me!
But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall
mourn.
He feels only the pain of his own body and mourns only for himself.”
The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the
oppressor.
A wicked man writhes in pain all his days;
only a few years are reserved for the
ruthless.
When a few years are come, then I shall go the way whence I shall not return.
For when only a few years are past I will go the way of no return.
Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat!
If only I knew where to find Him, so that I could go to His seat.
Great men are not always wise: neither do the aged understand judgment.
It is not only the old who are wise, or the elderly who understand justice.
When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only:
But when He remains silent, who can
condemn Him? When He hides His face, who can see Him? Yet He watches over both man and nation,
My desire is that Job may be tried unto the end because of his answers for wicked men.
If only Job were tried to the utmost for answering like a wicked man.
Thy wickedness may
hurt a man as thou art; and thy righteousness may profit the son of man.
Your wickedness affects
only a man like
yourself, and your righteousness
only a son of man.
He is the chief of the ways of God: he that made him can make his sword to approach unto him.
He is the foremost of God’s works; only his Maker can draw the sword against him.
I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.
I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.
Against thee, thee
only, have I
sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.
Against You, You
only, have I
sinned and done what is evil in Your sight, so that You may be proved right when You speak and
blameless when You judge.
He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved.
He alone is my rock and my salvation. He is my fortress; I will never be
shaken.
They fully intend to cast him down from his lofty
perch; they delight in lies; with their mouths they
bless, but inwardly they
curse.
Selah My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.
Rest in God alone, O my soul, for my hope comes from Him.
He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved.
He alone is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress; I will not be
shaken.
I will go in the strength of the Lord GOD: I will make mention of thy righteousness, even of thine only.
I will enter in the strength of the Lord GOD; I will
proclaim Your righteousness—Yours alone.
Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who
only doeth
wondrous things.
Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who alone does
marvelous deeds.
Hear, O My people, and I will
warn you: O Israel, if
only you would
listen to Me!
Oh that my people had
hearkened unto me, and Israel had walked in my ways!
If
only My people would
listen to Me, if Israel would follow My ways,
Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.
You will only see it with your eyes and witness the punishment of the wicked.
Princes have
persecuted me without a cause: but my heart standeth in
awe of thy word.
Rulers
persecute me without cause, but my heart fears
only Your word.
For I was my father’s son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother.
When I was a son to my father, tender and the only child of my mother,
Let them be only thine own, and not strangers’ with thee.
Let them be yours alone, never to be shared with strangers.
A
gracious woman retaineth honour: and strong men retain riches.
The desire of the righteous is only good: but the expectation of the wicked is wrath.
The desire of the righteous leads only to good, but the hope of the wicked brings wrath.
There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.
One gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds what is right, only to become poor.
A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender
mercies of the wicked are cruel.
A righteous man regards the life of his animal, but the tender
mercies of the wicked are
only cruelty.
The
lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment.
Truthful lips
endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts
only a moment.
In all labour there is profit: but the talk of the lips tendeth
only to
penury.
There is profit in all labor, but mere talk leads only to poverty.
An evil man seeketh
only rebellion: therefore a cruel
messenger shall be sent against him.
An evil man seeks
only rebellion; a cruel
messenger will be sent against him.
A
fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself.
A
fool does not delight in understanding, but
only in airing his opinions.
It is a
snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make
enquiry.
For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors there is safety.
Only with sound guidance should you
wage war, and victory lies in a multitude of counselors.
So is the man that deceiveth his neighbour, and saith, Am not I in
sport?
so is the man who deceives his
neighbor and says, “I was
only joking!”
Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.
Only this have I found: I have discovered that God made men upright, but they have sought out many schemes.”
And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge;
yea, he gave good
heed, and sought out, and set in order many
proverbs.
Not
only was the Teacher wise, but he also taught the people knowledge; he
pondered, searched out, and arranged many
proverbs.
Draw me, we will run after thee: the king hath brought me into his chambers: we will be
glad and
rejoice in thee, we will remember thy love more than wine: the upright love thee.
Take me away with you—let us
hurry! May the king bring me to his chambers. We will
rejoice and delight in you; we will praise your love more than wine. It is
only right that they
adore you.
My
dove, my
undefiled is but one; she is the
only one of her mother, she is the choice one of her that bare her. The daughters saw her, and blessed her;
yea, the queens and the concubines, and they praised her.
but my
dove, my perfect one, is unique, the
favorite of the mother who bore her. The maidens see her and call her blessed; the queens and concubines sing her praises.
From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither
mollified with
ointment.
From the sole of your foot to the top of your head, there is no soundness—
only wounds and welts and
festering sores neither
cleansed nor
bandaged nor
soothed with oil.
How is the faithful city become an
harlot! it was full of judgment; righteousness
lodged in it; but now murderers.
See how the faithful city has become a
harlot! She once was full of justice; righteousness resided within her, but now
only murderers!
Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of?
Put no more trust in man, who has only the breath in his nostrils. Of what account is he?
And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own
apparel:
only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach.
In that day seven women will take hold of one man and say, “We will eat our own bread and provide our own clothes. Just let us be called by your name. Take away our disgrace!”
Yea, ten acres of
vineyard shall yield one bath, and the seed of an homer shall yield an
ephah.
For ten acres of
vineyard will yield but a bath of wine, and a homer of seed
only an
ephah of grain.”
And it shall come to pass in that day, that every place shall be, where there were a thousand vines at a thousand silverlings, it shall even be for briers and thorns.
And on that day, in every place that had a thousand vines worth a thousand shekels of silver, only briers and thorns will be found.
Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your
dread.
The LORD of Hosts is the One you shall regard as holy.
Only He should be feared;
only He should be
dreaded.
And they shall look unto the earth; and behold trouble and darkness,
dimness of
anguish; and they shall be driven to darkness.
Then they will look to the earth and see
only distress and darkness and the
gloom of
anguish. And they will be driven into utter darkness.
For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a
remnant of them shall return: the consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness.
Though your people, O Israel, be like the sand of the sea,
only a
remnant will return. Destruction has been decreed, overflowing with righteousness.
Therefore hath the
curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are
desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left.
Therefore a
curse has consumed the earth, and its inhabitants must bear the guilt; the earth’s dwellers have been burned, and
only a few
survive.
O LORD our God, other lords besides thee have had dominion over us: but by thee only will we make mention of thy name.
O LORD our God, other lords besides You have had dominion, but Your name alone do we
confess.
Fury is not in me: who would set the briers and thorns against me in battle? I would go through them, I would burn them together.
I am not
angry. If
only thorns and briers
confronted Me, I would march and
trample them, I would burn them to the ground.
From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a
vexation only to understand the report.
As often as it passes through, it will carry you away; it will
sweep through morning after morning, by day and by night.” The understanding of this message will bring sheer terror.
And an
highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of
holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the
wayfaring men, though fools, shall not
err therein.
And there will be a
highway called the Way of
Holiness. The unclean will not travel it—
only those who walk in the Way— and fools will not
stray onto it.
But
Rabshakeh said, Hath my master sent me to thy master and to thee to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own
piss with you?
But the
Rabshakeh replied, “Has my master sent me to speak these words
only to you and your master, and not to the men sitting on the wall, who are destined with you to eat their own dung and drink their own
urine?”
And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them.
They have cast their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods, but only wood and stone—the work of human hands.
Now therefore, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD, even thou only.
And now, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You alone, O LORD, are God.”
The living, the living, he shall praise thee, as I do this day: the father to the children shall make known thy truth.
The living,
only the living, can
thank You, as I do
today; fathers will tell their children about Your faithfulness.
Behold, all his fellows shall be
ashamed: and the workmen, they are of men: let them all be gathered together, let them stand up; yet they shall fear, and they shall be
ashamed together.
Behold, all his companions will be put to shame, for the
craftsmen themselves are
only human. Let them all
assemble and take their stand; they will all be brought to terror and shame.
O that thou hadst
hearkened to my commandments! then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea:
If only you had paid attention to My commandments, your peace would have been like a river, and your righteousness like waves of the sea.
Come ye, say they, I will
fetch wine, and we will fill ourselves with strong drink; and to
morrow shall be as this day, and much more abundant.
“Come, let me get the wine, let us
imbibe the strong drink, and
tomorrow will be like
today,
only far better!”
Oh that thou wouldest
rend the heavens, that thou wouldest come down, that the mountains might flow down at thy presence,
If
only You would
rend the heavens and come down, so that mountains would
quake at Your presence,
Then said I,
Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child.
“
Ah, Lord GOD,” I said, “I surely do not know how to speak, for I am
only a child!”
But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and
whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak.
But the LORD told me: “Do not say, ‘I am
only a child.’ For to
everyone I send you, you must go, and all that I command you, you must speak.
And yet for all this her
treacherous sister Judah hath not turned unto me with her whole heart, but
feignedly, saith the LORD.
Yet in spite of all this, her unfaithful sister Judah did not return to Me with all her heart, but only in pretense,” declares the LORD.
Only acknowledge thine iniquity, that thou hast
transgressed against the LORD thy God, and hast scattered thy ways to the strangers under every green tree, and ye have not obeyed my voice, saith the LORD.
Only acknowledge your guilt, that you have rebelled against the LORD your God. You have scattered your favors to foreign gods under every green tree and have not obeyed My voice,’” declares the LORD.
Therefore I said, Surely these are poor; they are
foolish: for they know not the way of the LORD, nor the judgment of their God.
Then I said, “They are
only the poor; they have played the
fool, for they do not know the way of the LORD, the justice of their God.
O daughter of my people, dress
yourselves in
sackcloth and roll in ashes.
Mourn with bitter
wailing, as you would for an
only son, for suddenly the destroyer will come upon us.
We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of health, and behold trouble!
We hoped for peace, but no good has come, for a time of
healing, but there was
only terror.
Oh that I had in the wilderness a
lodging place of
wayfaring men; that I might leave my people, and go from them! for they be all adulterers, an assembly of
treacherous men.
If
only I had a traveler’s
lodge in the wilderness, I would
abandon my people and depart from them, for they are all adulterers, a crowd of faithless people.
O LORD, correct me, but with judgment; not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.
Correct me, O LORD, but only with justice— not in Your anger, or You will bring me to nothing.
Hast thou utterly rejected Judah? hath thy soul
lothed Zion? why hast thou
smitten us, and there is no
healing for us? we looked for peace, and there is no good; and for the time of
healing, and behold trouble!
Have You rejected Judah completely? Do You
despise Zion? Why have You
stricken us so that we are beyond
healing? We hoped for peace, but no good has come, and for the time of
healing, but there was
only terror.
Wherefore came I forth out of the
womb to see labour and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?
Why did I come out of the
womb to see
only trouble and sorrow, and to end my days in shame?
Am I a God at hand, saith the LORD, and not a God
afar off?
“Am I only a God nearby,” declares the LORD, “and not a God far away?”
The prophet which prophesieth of peace, when the word of the prophet shall come to pass, then shall the prophet be known, that the LORD hath truly sent him.
As for the prophet who prophesies peace, only if the word of the prophet comes true will the prophet be recognized as one the LORD has truly sent.”
If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the LORD, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever.
“Only if this fixed order departed from My presence, declares the LORD, would Israel’s descendants ever cease to be a nation before Me.”
