These are the inheritances which
Eleazar the
priest, and Joshua the son of
Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, divided for an inheritance by lot in
Shiloh before the LORD, at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. So they made an end of dividing the country.
These are the inheritances that
Eleazar the
priest, Joshua son of
Nun, and the heads of the families distributed by lot to the tribes of Israel at
Shiloh before the LORD at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. So they finished dividing up the land.
And he shall dwell in that city, until he stand before the congregation for judgment, and until the death of the high
priest that shall be in those days: then shall the
slayer return, and come unto his own city, and unto his own house, unto the city from whence he fled.
He is to stay in that city until he stands trial before the assembly and until the death of the high
priest serving at that time. Then the
manslayer may return to his own home in the city from which he fled.”
Then came near the heads of the fathers of the Levites unto
Eleazar the
priest, and unto Joshua the son of
Nun, and unto the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel;
Now the family heads of the Levites approached
Eleazar the
priest, Joshua son of
Nun, and the heads of the other tribes of Israel
And the lot came out for the families of the Kohathites: and the children of Aaron the
priest, which were of the Levites, had by lot out of the tribe of Judah, and out of the tribe of
Simeon, and out of the tribe of Benjamin, thirteen cities.
The first lot came out for the Kohathite clans. The Levites who were descendants of Aaron the
priest received thirteen cities by lot from the tribes of Judah,
Simeon, and Benjamin.
Thus they gave to the children of Aaron the
priest Hebron with her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for the
slayer; and
Libnah with her suburbs,
So to the descendants of Aaron the
priest they gave these cities, together with their pasturelands:
Hebron, a city of refuge for the
manslayer,
Libnah,
All the cities of the children of Aaron, the priests, were thirteen cities with their suburbs.
In all, thirteen cities, together with their pasturelands, were given to the priests, the descendants of Aaron.
And when
Phinehas the
priest, and the princes of the congregation and heads of the thousands of Israel which were with him, heard the words that the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad and the children of
Manasseh spake, it pleased them.
When
Phinehas the
priest and the chiefs of the congregation—the heads of Israel’s clans who were with him—heard what the descendants of
Reuben,
Gad, and
Manasseh had to say, they were satisfied.
And
Phinehas the son of
Eleazar the
priest said unto the children of
Reuben, and to the children of
Gad, and to the children of
Manasseh, This day we perceive that the LORD is among us, because ye have not committed this
trespass against the LORD: now ye have delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of the LORD.
Phinehas son of
Eleazar the
priest said to the descendants of
Reuben,
Gad, and
Manasseh, “
Today we know that the LORD is among us, because you have not committed this breach of faith against Him. Consequently, you have delivered the Israelites from the hand of the LORD.”
And
Phinehas the son of
Eleazar the
priest, and the princes, returned from the children of
Reuben, and from the children of
Gad, out of the land of
Gilead, unto the land of
Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again.
Then
Phinehas son of
Eleazar the
priest, together with the other leaders, returned to the Israelites in the land of
Canaan and brought back a report regarding the Reubenites and Gadites in the land of
Gilead.
And the man
Micah had an house of gods, and made an
ephod, and
teraphim, and consecrated one of his sons, who became his
priest.
Now this man
Micah had a
shrine, and he made an
ephod and some household idols, and ordained one of his sons as his
priest.
And
Micah said unto him, Dwell with me, and be unto me a father and a
priest, and I will give thee ten shekels of silver by the year, and a suit of
apparel, and thy
victuals. So the
Levite went in.
“Stay with me,”
Micah said to him, “and be my father and
priest, and I will give you ten shekels of silver per year, a suit of clothes, and your provisions.” So the
Levite went in
And
Micah consecrated the
Levite; and the young man became his
priest, and was in the house of
Micah.
Micah ordained the
Levite, and the young man became his
priest and lived in his house.
Then said
Micah, Now know I that the LORD will do me good, seeing I have a
Levite to my
priest.
Then
Micah said, “Now I know that the LORD will be good to me, because a
Levite has become my
priest.”
And he said unto them, Thus and thus dealeth
Micah with me, and hath
hired me, and I am his
priest.
“
Micah has done this and that for me,” he replied, “and he has
hired me to be his
priest.”
And the priest said unto them, Go in peace: before the LORD is your way wherein ye go.
And the priest told them, “Go in peace. The LORD is watching over your journey.”
And the five men that went to
spy out the land went up, and came in thither, and took the
graven image, and the
ephod, and the
teraphim, and the
molten image: and the
priest stood in the entering of the gate with the six hundred men that were appointed with weapons of war.
And the five men who had gone to
spy out the land went inside and took the
graven image, the
ephod, the household idols, and the
molten idol, while the
priest stood at the entrance of the gate with the six hundred armed men.
And these went into
Micah’s house, and
fetched the carved image, the
ephod, and the
teraphim, and the
molten image. Then said the
priest unto them, What do ye?
When they entered
Micah’s house and took the
graven image, the
ephod, the household idols, and the
molten idol, the
priest said to them, “What are you doing?”
And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be a priest unto the house of one man, or that thou be a priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?
“Be quiet,” they told him. “Put your hand over your mouth and come with us and be a father and a priest to us. Is it better for you to be a priest for the house of one person or a priest for a tribe and family in Israel?”
And the
priest’s heart was
glad, and he took the
ephod, and the
teraphim, and the
graven image, and went in the midst of the people.
So the
priest was
glad and took the
ephod, the household idols, and the
graven image, and went with the people.
And he said, Ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and ye are gone away: and what have I more? and what is this that ye say unto me, What aileth thee?
He replied, “You took the gods I had made, and my priest, and went away. What else do I have? How can you say to me, ‘What is the matter with you?’”
And they took the things which
Micah had made, and the
priest which he had, and came unto Laish, unto a people that were at quiet and secure: and they
smote them with the edge of the sword, and burnt the city with fire.
After they had taken
Micah’s idols and his
priest, they went to Laish, to a
tranquil and
unsuspecting people, and they struck them with their swords and burned down the city.
And the children of
Dan set up the
graven image: and
Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of
Manasseh, he and his sons were
priests to the tribe of
Dan until the day of the captivity of the land.
The Danites set up idols for themselves, and
Jonathan son of Gershom, the son of Moses, and his sons were
priests for the tribe of
Dan until the day of the captivity of the land.
And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto the LORD of hosts in
Shiloh. And the two sons of
Eli,
Hophni and
Phinehas, the
priests of the LORD, were there.
Year after year Elkanah would go up from his city to worship and sacrifice to the LORD of Hosts at
Shiloh, where
Eli’s two sons,
Hophni and
Phinehas, were
priests to the LORD.
So
Hannah rose up after they had eaten in
Shiloh, and after they had
drunk. Now
Eli the
priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of the LORD.
So after they had finished eating and drinking in
Shiloh,
Hannah stood up. Now
Eli the
priest was sitting on a chair by the
doorpost of the temple of the LORD.
And Elkanah went to
Ramah to his house. And the child did minister unto the LORD before
Eli the
priest.
Then Elkanah went home to
Ramah, but the boy began ministering to the LORD before
Eli the
priest.
And the
priest’s custom with the people was, that, when any man offered sacrifice, the
priest’s servant came, while the flesh was in
seething, with a
fleshhook of three teeth in his hand;
or for the custom of the
priests with the people. When any man offered a sacrifice, the servant of the
priest would come with a three-
pronged meat
fork while the meat was boiling
And he struck it into the pan, or
kettle, or
caldron, or pot; all that the
fleshhook brought up the
priest took for himself. So they did in
Shiloh unto all the Israelites that came thither.
and
plunge it into the pan or
kettle or cauldron or
cooking pot. And the
priest would claim for himself whatever the meat
fork brought up. This is how they treated all the Israelites who came to
Shiloh.
Also before they burnt the fat, the
priest’s servant came, and said to the man that sacrificed, Give flesh to
roast for the
priest; for he will not have
sodden flesh of thee, but raw.
Even before the fat was burned, the servant of the
priest would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, “Give the
priest some meat to
roast, because he will not accept boiled meat from you, but only raw.”
And did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my
priest, to offer upon mine altar, to burn incense, to wear an
ephod before me? and did I give unto the house of thy father all the offerings made by fire of the children of Israel?
And out of all the tribes of Israel I selected your father to be My
priest, to offer sacrifices on My altar, to burn incense, and to wear an
ephod in My presence. I also gave to the house of your father all the offerings of the Israelites made by fire.
And I will raise me up a faithful
priest, that shall do according to that which is in mine heart and in my mind: and I will build him a sure house; and he shall walk before mine
anointed for ever.
Then I will raise up for Myself a faithful
priest. He will do whatever is in My heart and mind. And I will build for him an
enduring house, and he will walk before My
anointed one for all time.
And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left in thine house shall come and
crouch to him for a piece of silver and a
morsel of bread, and shall say, Put me, I pray thee, into one of the
priests’ offices, that I may eat a piece of bread.
And
everyone left in your house will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver or a
morsel of bread,
pleading, “Please
appoint me to some
priestly office so that I can eat a piece of bread.”’”
And the Philistines called for the
priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do to the ark of the LORD? tell us
wherewith we shall send it to his place.
the Philistines summoned the priests and diviners, saying, “What shall we do with the ark of the LORD? Tell us how to send it back to its place.”
And Ahiah, the son of Ahitub, I-chabod’s brother, the son of
Phinehas, the son of
Eli, the LORD’S
priest in
Shiloh, wearing an
ephod. And the people knew not that
Jonathan was gone.
including
Ahijah, who was wearing an
ephod. He was the son of Ichabod’s brother Ahitub son of
Phinehas, the son of
Eli the
priest of the LORD in
Shiloh. But the troops did not know that
Jonathan had left.
And it came to pass, while Saul talked unto the priest, that the noise that was in the host of the Philistines went on and increased: and Saul said unto the priest, Withdraw thine hand.
While Saul was talking to the
priest, the
commotion in the
Philistine camp continued to increase. So Saul said to the
priest, “Withdraw your hand.”
And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and
spoil them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do
whatsoever seemeth good unto thee. Then said the
priest, Let us draw near
hither unto God.
And Saul said, “Let us go down after the Philistines by night and
plunder them until
dawn, leaving no man alive!” “Do what seems good to you,” the troops replied. But the
priest said, “We must
consult God here.”
Then came David to
Nob to
Ahimelech the
priest: and
Ahimelech was afraid at the meeting of David, and said unto him, Why art thou alone, and no man with thee?
Then David came to
Nob, to
Ahimelech the
priest. And when
Ahimelech met David, he
trembled and asked him, “Why are you alone? Why is no one with you?”
And David said unto
Ahimelech the
priest, The king hath commanded me a business, and hath said unto me, Let no man know any thing of the business
whereabout I send thee, and what I have commanded thee: and I have appointed my servants to such and such a place.
“The king has given me a mission,” David replied. “He told me no one is to know about the mission or charge. And I have directed my young men to meet me at a certain place.
And the
priest answered David, and said, There is no common bread under mine hand, but there is
hallowed bread; if the young men have kept themselves at least from women.
“There is no common bread on hand,” the priest replied, “but there is some consecrated bread—provided that the young men have kept themselves from women.”
And David answered the
priest, and said unto him, Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days, since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in a manner common,
yea, though it were
sanctified this day in the vessel.
David answered, “Women have indeed been kept from us, as is usual when I set out. And the
equipment of the young men is holy, as it is even on common missions, and all the more at this time.”
So the
priest gave him
hallowed bread: for there was no bread there but the
shewbread, that was taken from before the LORD, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away.
So the priest gave him the consecrated bread, since there was no bread there but the Bread of the Presence, which had been removed from before the LORD and replaced with hot bread on the day it was taken away.
And the
priest said, The sword of
Goliath the
Philistine, whom thou slewest in the valley of Elah, behold, it is here
wrapped in a cloth behind the
ephod: if thou
wilt take that, take it: for there is no other save that here. And David said, There is none like that; give it me.
The
priest replied, “The sword of
Goliath the
Philistine, whom you killed in the Valley of Elah, is here; it is
wrapped in a cloth behind the
ephod. If you want, you may take it. For there is no other but this one.” And David said, “There is none like it; give it to me.”
Then the king sent to call
Ahimelech the
priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father’s house, the
priests that were in
Nob: and they came all of them to the king.
Then the king sent messengers to
summon Ahimelech the
priest, the son of Ahitub, and his father’s whole family, who were
priests at
Nob. And all of them came to the king.
And the king said unto the
footmen that stood about him, Turn, and
slay the
priests of the LORD; because their hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled, and did not
shew it to me. But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the
priests of the LORD.
Then the king ordered the guards at his side, “Turn and kill the
priests of the LORD, because they too sided with David. For they knew he was
fleeing, but they did not tell me.” But the king’s servants would not lift a hand to strike the
priests of the LORD.
And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall upon the
priests. And Doeg the
Edomite turned, and he fell upon the
priests, and
slew on that day
fourscore and five persons that did wear a linen
ephod.
So the king ordered Doeg, “You turn and strike down the
priests!” And Doeg the
Edomite turned and struck down the
priests himself. On that day he killed eighty-five men who
wore the linen
ephod.
And
Nob, the city of the
priests,
smote he with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings, and oxen, and
asses, and sheep, with the edge of the sword.
He also put to the sword
Nob, the city of the
priests, with its men and women, children and infants, oxen,
donkeys, and sheep.
And
Abiathar shewed David that Saul had slain the LORD’S
priests.
And
Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the
priests of the LORD.
And David knew that Saul secretly practised mischief against him; and he said to
Abiathar the
priest, Bring
hither the
ephod.
When David learned that Saul was
plotting evil against him, he said to
Abiathar the
priest, “Bring the
ephod.”
And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over both the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David’s sons were chief rulers.
Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and Pelethites; and David’s sons were priestly leaders.
The king said also unto
Zadok the
priest, Art not thou a
seer? return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you,
Ahimaaz thy son, and
Jonathan the son of
Abiathar.
And hast thou not there with thee
Zadok and
Abiathar the
priests? therefore it shall be, that what thing
soever thou shalt hear out of the king’s house, thou shalt tell it to
Zadok and
Abiathar the
priests.
Will not
Zadok and
Abiathar the
priests be there with you? Report to them everything you hear from the king’s palace.
And king David sent to
Zadok and to
Abiathar the
priests, saying, Speak unto the elders of Judah, saying, Why are ye the last to bring the king back to his house? seeing the speech of all Israel is come to the king, even to his house.
Then King David sent this message to
Zadok and
Abiathar, the
priests: “Say to the elders of Judah, ‘Why should you be the last to restore the king to his palace, since the talk of all Israel has reached the king at his quarters?
And Ira also the Jairite was a chief ruler about David.
and Ira the Jairite was David’s priest.
And he conferred with
Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with
Abiathar the
priest: and they following Adonijah helped him.
So Adonijah conferred with
Joab son of Zeruiah and with
Abiathar the
priest, who supported him.
But
Zadok the
priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and
Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and
Rei, and the mighty men which belonged to David, were not with Adonijah.
But
Zadok the
priest, Benaiah son of Jehoiada,
Nathan the prophet, Shimei,
Rei, and David’s mighty men would not join Adonijah.
And he hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the sons of the king, and
Abiathar the
priest, and
Joab the captain of the host: but Solomon thy servant hath he not called.
And he has sacrificed an abundance of oxen,
fattened calves, and sheep, and has invited all the other sons of the king, as well as
Abiathar the
priest and
Joab the commander of the army. But he did not
invite your servant Solomon.
For he is gone down this day, and hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the king’s sons, and the captains of the host, and
Abiathar the
priest; and, behold, they eat and drink before him, and say, God save king Adonijah.
For
today he has gone down and sacrificed an abundance of oxen,
fattened calves, and sheep, and has invited all the sons of the king, the commanders of the army, and
Abiathar the
priest. And behold, they are eating and drinking before him, saying, ‘Long live King Adonijah!’
But me, even me thy servant, and
Zadok the
priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and thy servant Solomon, hath he not called.
But me your servant he did not
invite, nor
Zadok the
priest, nor Benaiah son of Jehoiada, nor your servant Solomon.
And king David said, Call me
Zadok the
priest, and
Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada. And they came before the king.
Then King David said, “Call in for me
Zadok the
priest,
Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada.” So they came before the king.
And let
Zadok the
priest and
Nathan the prophet
anoint him there king over Israel: and blow ye with the
trumpet, and say, God save king Solomon.
There
Zadok the
priest and
Nathan the prophet are to
anoint him king over Israel. You are to blow the ram’s horn and declare, ‘Long live King Solomon!’
So
Zadok the
priest, and
Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, went down, and caused Solomon to
ride upon king David’s
mule, and brought him to
Gihon.
Then
Zadok the
priest,
Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada, along with the Cherethites and Pelethites, went down and set Solomon on King David’s
mule, and they
escorted him to
Gihon.
And
Zadok the
priest took an horn of oil out of the tabernacle, and
anointed Solomon. And they
blew the
trumpet; and all the people said, God save king Solomon.
Zadok the
priest took the horn of oil from the tabernacle and
anointed Solomon. Then they
blew the ram’s horn, and all the people proclaimed, “Long live King Solomon!”
And while he yet spake, behold,
Jonathan the son of
Abiathar the
priest came: and Adonijah said unto him, Come in; for thou art a
valiant man, and bringest good
tidings.
As he was speaking, suddenly
Jonathan the son of
Abiathar the
priest arrived. “Come in,” said Adonijah, “for you are a man of
valor. You must be bringing good news.”
And the king hath sent with him
Zadok the
priest, and
Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, and they have caused him to
ride upon the king’s
mule:
And with Solomon, the king has sent
Zadok the
priest,
Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada, along with the Cherethites and Pelethites, and they have set him on the king’s
mule.
And
Zadok the
priest and
Nathan the prophet have
anointed him king in
Gihon: and they are come up from thence
rejoicing, so that the city
rang again. This is the noise that ye have heard.
Zadok the
priest and
Nathan the prophet have
anointed him king at
Gihon, and they have gone up from there with
rejoicing that rings out in the city. That is the noise you hear.
And king Solomon answered and said unto his mother, And why
dost thou ask
Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? ask for him the kingdom also; for he is mine elder brother; even for him, and for
Abiathar the
priest, and for
Joab the son of Zeruiah.
King Solomon answered his mother, “Why do you request
Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? Since he is my older brother, you might as well request the kingdom for him and for
Abiathar the
priest and for
Joab son of Zeruiah!”
And unto
Abiathar the
priest said the king, Get thee to Anathoth, unto thine own fields; for thou art worthy of death: but I will not at this time put thee to death, because thou barest the ark of the Lord GOD before David my father, and because thou hast been
afflicted in all wherein my father was
afflicted.
Then the king said to
Abiathar the
priest, “Go back to your fields in Anathoth. Even though you deserve to die, I will not put you to death at this time, since you carried the ark of the Lord GOD before my father David, and you suffered through all that my father suffered.”
So Solomon thrust out
Abiathar from being
priest unto the LORD; that he might fulfil the word of the LORD, which he spake concerning the house of
Eli in
Shiloh.
So Solomon banished
Abiathar from the
priesthood of the LORD and thus fulfilled the word that the LORD had spoken at
Shiloh against the house of
Eli.
And the king put Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his room over the host: and
Zadok the
priest did the king put in the room of
Abiathar.
And the king appointed Benaiah son of Jehoiada in
Joab’s place over the army, and he appointed
Zadok the
priest in
Abiathar’s place.
And these were the princes which he had;
Azariah the son of
Zadok the
priest,
and these were his chief officials:
Azariah son of
Zadok was the
priest;
And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the host: and
Zadok and
Abiathar were the
priests:
Benaiah son of Jehoiada was in charge of the army;
Zadok and
Abiathar were
priests;
And
Azariah the son of
Nathan was over the officers: and Zabud the son of
Nathan was principal officer, and the king’s friend:
And all the elders of Israel came, and the priests took up the ark.
When all the elders of Israel had arrived, the priests took up the ark,
And they brought up the ark of the LORD, and the tabernacle of the congregation, and all the holy vessels that were in the tabernacle, even those did the priests and the Levites bring up.
and they brought up the ark of the LORD and the Tent of Meeting with all its sacred furnishings. So the priests and Levites carried them up.
And the
priests brought in the ark of the covenant of the LORD unto his place, into the
oracle of the house, to the most holy place, even under the wings of the cherubims.
Then the
priests brought the ark of the covenant of the LORD to its place in the inner sanctuary of the temple, the Most Holy Place, beneath the wings of the
cherubim.
And it came to pass, when the priests were come out of the holy place, that the cloud filled the house of the LORD,
And when the priests came out of the Holy Place, the cloud filled the house of the LORD
So that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of the LORD.
so that the priests could not stand there to minister because of the cloud; for the glory of the LORD filled the house of the LORD.
And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi.
Jeroboam also built shrines on the high places and appointed from every class of people
priests who were not Levites.
And
Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the
fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in
Bethel, sacrificing unto the
calves that he had made: and he placed in
Bethel the
priests of the high places which he had made.
And
Jeroboam ordained a feast on the
fifteenth day of the eighth month, like the feast that was in Judah, and he offered sacrifices on the altar; he made this offering in
Bethel to sacrifice to the
calves he had set up, and he
installed priests in
Bethel for the high places he had set up.
And he
cried against the altar in the word of the LORD, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith the LORD; Behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David,
Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he offer the
priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men’s bones shall be burnt upon thee.
And he
cried out against the altar by the word of the LORD, “O altar, O altar, this is what the LORD says: ‘A son named
Josiah will be born to the house of David, and upon you he will sacrifice the
priests of the high places who burn incense upon you, and human bones will be burned upon you.’”
After this thing
Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people
priests of the high places:
whosoever would, he consecrated him, and he became one of the
priests of the high places.
Even after these events,
Jeroboam did not
repent of his evil ways, but again he appointed
priests for the high places from every class of people. He ordained
anyone who desired to be a
priest of the high places.
So
Jehu slew all that remained of the house of
Ahab in
Jezreel, and all his great men, and his kinsfolks, and his
priests, until he left him none remaining.
So
Jehu killed
everyone in
Jezreel who remained of the house of
Ahab, as well as all his great men and close friends and
priests, leaving him without a single
survivor.
Now therefore call unto me all the prophets of
Baal, all his servants, and all his
priests; let none be wanting: for I have a great sacrifice to do to
Baal;
whosoever shall be wanting, he shall not live. But
Jehu did it in
subtilty, to the intent that he might destroy the worshippers of
Baal.
Now, therefore,
summon to me all the prophets of
Baal, all his servants, and all his
priests. See that no one is missing, for I have a great sacrifice for
Baal.
Whoever is missing will not live.” But
Jehu was acting
deceptively in order to destroy the servants of
Baal.
And the captains over the hundreds did according to all things that Jehoiada the priest commanded: and they took every man his men that were to come in on the sabbath, with them that should go out on the sabbath, and came to Jehoiada the priest.
So the commanders of hundreds did everything that Jehoiada the priest had ordered. Each of them took his men—those coming on duty on the Sabbath and those going off duty—and came to Jehoiada the priest.
And to the captains over hundreds did the priest give king David’s spears and shields, that were in the temple of the LORD.
Then the priest gave to the commanders of hundreds the spears and shields of King David from the house of the LORD.
But Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of the hundreds, the officers of the host, and said unto them, Have her forth without the ranges: and him that followeth her kill with the sword. For the priest had said, Let her not be slain in the house of the LORD.
And Jehoiada the
priest ordered the commanders of hundreds in charge of the army, “Bring her out between the ranks, and put to the sword
anyone who follows her.” For the
priest had said, “She must not be put to death in the house of the LORD.”
And all the people of the land went into the house of
Baal, and
brake it down; his altars and his images
brake they in pieces thoroughly, and
slew Mattan the
priest of
Baal before the altars. And the
priest appointed officers over the house of the LORD.
So all the people of the land went to the temple of
Baal and
tore it down. They
smashed the altars and idols to pieces, and they killed Mattan the
priest of
Baal in front of the altars. And Jehoiada the
priest posted guards for the house of the LORD.
And Jehoash did that which was right in the sight of the LORD all his days wherein Jehoiada the
priest instructed him.
And
Joash did what was right in the eyes of the LORD all the days he was
instructed by Jehoiada the
priest.
And Jehoash said to the priests, All the money of the dedicated things that is brought into the house of the LORD, even the money of every one that passeth the account, the money that every man is set at, and all the money that cometh into any man’s heart to bring into the house of the LORD,
Then
Joash said to the
priests, “Collect all the money brought as sacred gifts into the house of the LORD—the census money, the money from vows, and the money brought
voluntarily into the house of the LORD.
Let the
priests take it to them, every man of his acquaintance: and let them repair the breaches of the house,
wheresoever any breach shall be found.
Let every
priest receive it from his
constituency, and let it be used to repair any damage found in the temple.”
But it was so, that in the three and
twentieth year of king Jehoash the
priests had not repaired the breaches of the house.
By the twenty-third year of the reign of
Joash, however, the
priests had not yet repaired the damage to the temple.
Then king Jehoash called for Jehoiada the priest, and the other priests, and said unto them, Why repair ye not the breaches of the house? now therefore receive no more money of your acquaintance, but deliver it for the breaches of the house.
So King
Joash called Jehoiada and the other
priests and said, “Why have you not repaired the damage to the temple? Now, therefore, take no more money from your
constituency, but hand it over for the repair of the temple.”
And the priests consented to receive no more money of the people, neither to repair the breaches of the house.
So the priests agreed that they would not receive money from the people and that they would not repair the temple themselves.
But Jehoiada the
priest took a chest, and bored a hole in the
lid of it, and set it beside the altar, on the right side as one cometh into the house of the LORD: and the
priests that kept the door put therein all the money that was brought into the house of the LORD.
Then Jehoiada the
priest took a chest, bored a hole in its
lid, and set it beside the altar on the right side as one enters the house of the LORD. There the
priests who guarded the
threshold put all the money brought into the house of the LORD.
And it was so, when they saw that there was much money in the chest, that the king’s
scribe and the high
priest came up, and they put up in bags, and told the money that was found in the house of the LORD.
Whenever they saw that there was a large amount of money in the chest, the royal
scribe and the high
priest would go up, count the money brought into the house of the LORD, and
tie it up in bags.
