At that time the LORD separated the tribe of Levi, to bear the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD to minister unto him, and to
bless in his name, unto this day.
At that time the LORD
set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD to serve Him, and to
pronounce blessings in His name, as they do to this day.
Only the LORD had a delight in thy fathers to love them, and he chose their seed after them, even you above all people, as it is this day.
Yet the LORD has set His affection on your fathers and loved them. And He has chosen you, their descendants after them, above all the peoples, even to this day.
There shall no man be able to stand before you: for the LORD your God shall lay the fear of you and the
dread of you upon all the land that ye shall
tread upon, as he hath said unto you.
No man will be able to stand against you; the LORD your God will put the fear and
dread of you upon all the land, wherever you
set foot, as He has promised you.
Behold, I
set before you this day a blessing and a
curse;
See,
today I am
setting before you a blessing and a
curse—
For ye shall pass over Jordan to go in to possess the land which the LORD your God giveth you, and ye shall possess it, and dwell therein.
For you are about to cross the Jordan to enter and possess the land that the LORD your God is giving you. When you take possession of it and settle in it,
And ye shall observe to do all the statutes and judgments which I set before you this day.
be careful to follow all the statutes and ordinances that I am
setting before you
today.
Thou shalt truly
tithe all the increase of thy seed, that the field bringeth forth year by year.
You must be sure to set aside a tenth of all the produce brought forth each year from your fields.
And if the way be too long for thee, so that thou art not able to carry it; or if the place be too far from thee, which the LORD thy God shall choose to set his name there, when the LORD thy God hath blessed thee:
But if the distance is too great for you to carry that with which the LORD your God has blessed you, because the place where the LORD your God will choose to put His Name is too far away,
And if thy brother, an Hebrew man, or an Hebrew woman, be sold unto thee, and serve thee six years; then in the seventh year thou shalt let him go free from thee.
If a fellow Hebrew, a man or a woman, is sold to you and serves you six years, then in the seventh year you must set him free.
It shall not seem hard unto thee, when thou sendest him away free from thee; for he hath been worth a double
hired servant to thee, in serving thee six years: and the LORD thy God shall
bless thee in all that thou doest.
Do not regard it as a
hardship to
set your servant free, because his six years of service were worth twice the wages of a
hired hand. And the LORD your God will
bless you in all you do.
You must
set apart to the LORD your God every
firstborn male produced by your herds and flocks. You are not to put the
firstborn of your oxen to work, nor are you to
shear the
firstborn of your flock.
But at the place which the LORD thy God shall choose to place his name in, there thou shalt sacrifice the
passover at even, at the going down of the sun, at the season that thou camest forth out of Egypt.
You must only offer the
Passover sacrifice at the place the LORD your God will choose as a dwelling for His Name. Do this in the evening as the sun
sets, at the same time you departed from Egypt.
Thou shalt not plant thee a
grove of any trees near unto the altar of the LORD thy God, which thou shalt make thee.
Do not set up any wooden Asherah pole next to the altar you will build for the LORD your God,
Neither shalt thou set thee up any image; which the LORD thy God hateth.
and do not
set up for
yourselves a sacred
pillar, which the LORD your God hates.
When thou art come unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, and shalt possess it, and shalt dwell therein, and shalt say, I will set a king over me, like as all the nations that are about me;
When you enter the land that the LORD your God is giving you and have taken possession of it and settled in it, and you say, “Let us set a king over us like all the nations around us,”
Thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee, whom the LORD thy God shall choose: one from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee: thou mayest not set a stranger over thee, which is not thy brother.
you are to
appoint over
yourselves the king whom the LORD your God shall choose.
Appoint a king from among your brothers; you are not to
set over
yourselves a foreigner who is not one of your brothers.
When the LORD thy God hath cut off the nations, whose land the LORD thy God giveth thee, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their cities, and in their houses;
When the LORD your God has cut off the nations whose land He is giving you, and when you have driven them out and settled in their cities and houses,
Thou shalt separate three cities for thee in the midst of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.
then you are to
set apart for
yourselves three cities within the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess.
Wherefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt separate three cities for thee.
This is why I am commanding you to
set apart for
yourselves three cities.
Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour’s
landmark, which they of old time have
set in thine inheritance, which thou shalt
inherit in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.
You must not move your
neighbor’s boundary marker, which was
set up by your ancestors to mark the inheritance you shall receive in the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess.
But it shall be, when evening cometh on, he shall wash himself with water: and when the sun is down, he shall come into the camp again.
When evening approaches, he must wash with water, and when the sun sets he may return to the camp.
Unto a stranger thou mayest
lend upon
usury; but unto thy brother thou shalt not
lend upon
usury: that the LORD thy God may
bless thee in all that thou
settest thine hand to in the land
whither thou goest to possess it.
You may charge a foreigner interest, but not your brother, so that the LORD your God may
bless you in everything to which you put your hand in the land that you are entering to possess.
At his day thou shalt give him his
hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it; for he is poor, and
setteth his heart upon it: lest he cry against thee unto the LORD, and it be sin unto thee.
You are to pay his wages each day before
sunset, because he is poor and depends on them. Otherwise he may cry out to the LORD against you, and you will be guilty of sin.
And it shall be, when thou art come in unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and possessest it, and dwellest therein;
When you enter the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, and you take possession of it and settle in it,
And the priest shall take the
basket out of thine hand, and
set it down before the altar of the LORD thy God.
Then the priest shall take the
basket from your hands and place it before the altar of the LORD your God,
And now, behold, I have brought the firstfruits of the land, which thou, O LORD, hast given me. And thou shalt set it before the LORD thy God, and worship before the LORD thy God:
And now, behold, I have brought the firstfruits of the land that You, O LORD, have given me.” Then you are to place the
basket before the LORD your God and bow down before Him.
And to make thee high above all nations which he hath made, in praise, and in name, and in honour; and that thou mayest be an holy people unto the LORD thy God, as he hath spoken.
that He will set you high in praise and name and honor above all the nations He has made, and that you will be a holy people to the LORD your God, as He has promised.
And it shall be on the day when ye shall pass over Jordan unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, that thou shalt
set thee up great stones, and
plaister them with
plaister:
And on the day you cross the Jordan into the land that the LORD your God is giving you,
set up large stones and coat them with
plaster.
Therefore it shall be when ye be gone over Jordan, that ye shall
set up these stones, which I command you this day, in mount
Ebal, and thou shalt
plaister them with
plaister.
And when you have crossed the Jordan, you are to
set up these stones on Mount
Ebal, as I am commanding you
today, and you are to coat them with
plaster.
Cursed be he that
setteth light by his father or his mother. And all the people shall say,
Amen.
‘
Cursed is he who dishonors his father or mother.’ And let all the people say, ‘
Amen!’
And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt
hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will
set thee on high above all nations of the earth:
“Now if you faithfully obey the voice of the LORD your God and are careful to follow all His commandments I am giving you
today, the LORD your God will
set you high above all the nations of the earth.
The LORD shall command the blessing upon thee in thy storehouses, and in all that thou
settest thine hand unto; and he shall
bless thee in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
The LORD will decree a blessing on your barns and on everything to which you put your hand; the LORD your God will
bless you in the land He is giving you.
The LORD shall send upon thee
cursing,
vexation, and
rebuke, in all that thou
settest thine hand unto for to do, until thou be destroyed, and until thou perish quickly; because of the wickedness of thy doings, whereby thou hast
forsaken me.
The LORD will send curses upon you, confusion and reproof in all to which you put your hand, until you are destroyed and quickly perish because of the wickedness you have committed in
forsaking Him.
The LORD shall bring thee, and thy king which thou shalt set over thee, unto a nation which neither thou nor thy fathers have known; and there shalt thou serve other gods, wood and stone.
The LORD will bring you and the king you
appoint to a nation neither you nor your fathers have known, and there you will worship other gods—gods of wood and stone.
The tender and delicate woman among you, which would not
adventure to
set the sole of her foot upon the ground for delicateness and tenderness, her eye shall be evil toward the husband of her
bosom, and toward her son, and toward her daughter,
The most gentle and refined woman among you, so gentle and refined she would not
venture to
set the sole of her foot on the ground, will
begrudge the husband she embraces and her son and daughter
And it shall come to pass, when all these things are come upon thee, the blessing and the
curse, which I have
set before thee, and thou shalt call them to mind among all the nations,
whither the LORD thy God hath driven thee,
“When all these things come upon you—the blessings and curses I have set before you—and you call them to mind in all the nations to which the LORD your God has banished you,
See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil;
See, I have
set before you
today life and goodness, as well as death and
disaster.
I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have
set before you life and death, blessing and
cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:
I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you
today that I have
set before you life and death, blessing and
cursing. Therefore choose life, so that you and your descendants may live,
My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall
distil as the
dew, as the small rain upon the tender
herb, and as the showers upon the grass:
Let my teaching fall like rain and my speech
settle like
dew, like gentle rain on new grass, like showers on tender plants.
When the most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel.
When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance, when He divided the sons of man, He set the boundaries of the peoples according to the number of the sons of God.
For a fire is
kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest
hell, and shall
consume the earth with her increase, and
set on fire the foundations of the mountains.
For a fire has been
kindled by My anger, and it burns to the depths of
Sheol; it consumes the earth and its produce, and scorches the foundations of the mountains.
And he said unto them,
Set your hearts unto all the words which I
testify among you this day, which ye shall command your children to observe to do, all the words of this law.
he said to them, “Take to heart all these words I
testify among you
today, so that you may command your children to carefully follow all the words of this law.
They shall teach Jacob thy judgments, and Israel thy law: they shall put incense before thee, and whole burnt sacrifice upon thine altar.
He will teach Your ordinances to Jacob and Your law to Israel; he will set incense before You and whole burnt offerings on Your altar.
And the men pursued after them the way to Jordan unto the fords: and as soon as they which pursued after them were gone out, they shut the gate.
So the king’s men
set out in pursuit of the
spies along the road to the fords of the Jordan, and as soon as they had gone out, the gate was shut.
And they commanded the people, saying, When ye see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, and the priests the Levites bearing it, then ye shall remove from your place, and go after it.
and commanded the people: “When you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God being carried by the
Levitical priests, you are to
set out from your positions and follow it.
And command ye them, saying, Take you hence out of the midst of Jordan, out of the place where the priests’ feet stood firm, twelve stones, and ye shall carry them over with you, and leave them in the
lodging place, where ye shall
lodge this night.
and command them: ‘Take up for
yourselves twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan where the priests were standing, carry them with you, and
set them down in the place where you
spend the night.’”
And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of Jordan, as the LORD spake unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them unto the place where they
lodged, and laid them down there.
Thus the Israelites did as Joshua had commanded them. They took up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, one for each tribe of Israel, just as the LORD had told Joshua; and they carried them to the camp, where they set them down.
And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests which bare the ark of the covenant stood: and they are there unto this day.
Joshua also set up twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan, in the place where the priests who carried the ark of the covenant stood. And the stones are there to this day.
And those twelve stones, which they took out of Jordan, did Joshua pitch in
Gilgal.
And there at
Gilgal Joshua
set up the twelve stones they had taken from the Jordan.
But keep away from the things devoted to destruction, lest you
yourself be
set apart for destruction. If you take any of these, you will
set apart the camp of Israel for destruction and bring
disaster upon it.
And the young men that were
spies went in, and brought
Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had; and they brought out all her kindred, and left them without the camp of Israel.
So the young
spies went in and brought out
Rahab, her father and mother and brothers, and all who belonged to her. They brought out her whole family and
settled them outside the camp of Israel.
And Joshua
adjured them at that time, saying,
Cursed be the man before the LORD, that riseth up and buildeth this city
Jericho: he shall lay the foundation thereof in his
firstborn, and in his youngest son shall he
set up the gates of it.
At that time Joshua
invoked this solemn oath: “
Cursed before the LORD is the man who rises up and rebuilds this city,
Jericho; at the cost of his
firstborn he will lay its foundations; at the cost of his youngest he will
set up its gates.”
But the children of Israel committed a
trespass in the
accursed thing: for
Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the
accursed thing: and the anger of the LORD was
kindled against the children of Israel.
The Israelites, however, acted unfaithfully regarding the things devoted to destruction.
Achan son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of what was
set apart. So the anger of the LORD burned against the Israelites.
Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were
accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the
accursed from among you.
This is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies. They will turn their backs and run from their enemies, because they themselves have been set apart for destruction. I will no longer be with you unless you remove from among you whatever is devoted to destruction.
And thou shalt do to
Ai and her king as thou
didst unto
Jericho and her king: only the
spoil thereof, and the cattle thereof, shall ye take for a prey unto
yourselves: lay thee an
ambush for the city behind it.
So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against
Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night.
So Joshua and the whole army
set out to attack
Ai. Joshua chose 30,000 mighty men of
valor and sent them out at night
And it shall be, when ye have taken the city, that ye shall set the city on fire: according to the commandment of the LORD shall ye do. See, I have commanded you.
And when you have taken the city, set it on fire. Do as the LORD has commanded! See, I have given you orders.”
And he took about five thousand men, and
set them to lie in
ambush between
Bethel and
Ai, on the west side of the city.
Now Joshua had taken about five thousand men and
set up an
ambush between
Bethel and
Ai, to the west of the city.
And when they had set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their liers in wait on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.
So the forces were stationed with the main camp to the north of the city and the rear guard to the west of the city. And that night Joshua went into the valley.
And it came to pass, when the king of
Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he
wist not that there were liers in
ambush against him behind the city.
When the king of
Ai saw the Israelites, he
hurried out early in the morning with the men of the city to
engage them in battle at an appointed place overlooking the Arabah. But he did not know that an
ambush had been
set up against him behind the city.
And the
ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand: and they entered into the city, and took it, and hasted and
set the city on fire.
and as soon as he did so, the men in
ambush rose quickly from their position. They
rushed forward, entered the city, captured it, and immediately
set it on fire.
They did work
wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their
asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;
And the children of Israel journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were
Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjath-jearim.
So the Israelites
set out and on the third day arrived at their cities—
Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath-jearim.
And Joshua said, Roll great stones upon the mouth of the cave, and set men by it for to keep them:
So Joshua said, “Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave, and post men there to guard them.
For it was of the LORD to
harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that he might destroy them utterly, and that they might have no favour, but that he might destroy them, as the LORD commanded Moses.
For it was of the LORD to
harden their hearts to
engage Israel in battle, so that they would be
set apart for destruction and would receive no mercy, being
annihilated as the LORD had commanded Moses.
And Moses
sware on that day, saying, Surely the land
whereon thy feet have
trodden shall be thine inheritance, and thy children’s for ever, because thou hast wholly followed the LORD my God.
On that day Moses
swore to me, saying, ‘Surely the land on which you have
set foot will be an inheritance to you and your children
forever, because you have wholly followed the LORD my God.’
And the separate cities for the children of Ephraim were among the inheritance of the children of
Manasseh, all the cities with their villages.
along with all the cities and villages
set apart for the descendants of Ephraim within the inheritance of
Manasseh.
And
Manasseh had in
Issachar and in Asher Beth-shean and her towns, and Ibleam and her towns, and the inhabitants of
Dor and her towns, and the inhabitants of
Endor and her towns, and the inhabitants of Taanach and her towns, and the inhabitants of
Megiddo and her towns, even three countries.
Within
Issachar and Asher,
Manasseh was assigned Beth-shean, Ibleam,
Dor (that is, Naphath),
Endor, Taanach, and
Megiddo, each with their surrounding
settlements.
And the whole congregation of the children of Israel assembled together at
Shiloh, and
set up the tabernacle of the congregation there. And the land was subdued before them.
Then the whole congregation of Israel assembled at
Shiloh and
set up the Tent of Meeting there. And though the land was subdued before them,
And the coast of the children of
Dan went out too little for them: therefore the children of
Dan went up to fight against Leshem, and took it, and
smote it with the edge of the sword, and possessed it, and dwelt therein, and called Leshem,
Dan, after the name of
Dan their father.
(Later, when the territory of the Danites was lost to them, they went up and fought against Leshem, captured it, and put it to the sword. So they took possession of Leshem,
settled there, and renamed it after their father
Dan.)
According to the word of the LORD they gave him the city which he asked, even Timnath-serah in mount Ephraim: and he built the city, and dwelt therein.
as the LORD had commanded. They gave him the city of Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim, as he requested. He rebuilt the city and settled in it.
And they appointed Kedesh in
Galilee in mount
Naphtali, and
Shechem in mount Ephraim, and Kirjath-arba, which is
Hebron, in the mountain of Judah.
So they
set apart Kedesh in
Galilee in the hill country of
Naphtali,
Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and Kiriath-arba (that is,
Hebron) in the hill country of Judah.
And the LORD gave unto Israel all the land which he
sware to give unto their fathers; and they possessed it, and dwelt therein.
Thus the LORD gave Israel all the land He had
sworn to give their fathers, and they took possession of it and
settled in it.
Did not
Achan the son of Zerah commit a
trespass in the
accursed thing, and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? and that man perished not alone in his iniquity.
Was not
Achan son of Zerah unfaithful regarding what was
set apart for destruction, bringing wrath upon the whole congregation of Israel? Yet it was not only
Achan who perished because of his sin!’”
Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and
warred against Israel, and sent and called
Balaam the son of Beor to
curse you:
Then Balak son of Zippor, the king of Moab,
set out to fight against Israel. He sent for
Balaam son of Beor to
curse you,
So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and
set them a statute and an
ordinance in
Shechem.
On that day Joshua made a covenant for the people, and there at
Shechem he established for them a statute and
ordinance.
And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God, and took a great stone, and set it up there under an oak, that was by the sanctuary of the LORD.
Joshua recorded these things in the Book of the Law of God. Then he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak that was near the sanctuary of the LORD.
Now the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and
smitten it with the edge of the sword, and
set the city on fire.
Then the men of Judah fought against Jerusalem and captured it. They put the city to the sword and set it on fire.
Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and
set it before thee. And he said, I will
tarry until thou come again.
Please do not depart from this place until I return to You. Let me bring my offering and set it before You.” And the LORD said, “I will stay until you return.”
So he brought down the people unto the water: and the LORD said unto
Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou
set by himself; likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink.
So
Gideon brought the people down to the water, and the LORD said to him, “Separate those who
lap the water with their tongues like a dog from those who
kneel to drink.”
And the Midianites and the
Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like grasshoppers for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the sea side for multitude.
Now the Midianites,
Amalekites, and all the other people of the east had
settled in the valley like a
swarm of locusts, and their camels were as countless as the sand on the
seashore.
So
Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly
set the watch: and they
blew the
trumpets, and
brake the pitchers that were in their hands.
Gideon and the hundred men with him reached the outskirts of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after the changing of the guard. They
blew their horns and broke the jars that were in their hands.
And the three hundred
blew the
trumpets, and the LORD
set every man’s sword against his fellow, even throughout all the host: and the host fled to Beth-
shittah in Zererath, and to the border of
Abel-meholah, unto Tabbath.
And when the three hundred rams’ horns sounded, the LORD
set all the men in the camp against one another with their swords. The army fled to Beth-
shittah toward Zererah as far as the border of
Abel-meholah near Tabbath.
And Jerubbaal the son of
Joash went and dwelt in his own house.
and he—Jerubbaal son of
Joash—returned home and
settled down.
And it came to pass, as soon as
Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a
whoring after
Baalim, and made
Baal-berith their god.
And as soon as
Gideon was dead, the Israelites turned and
prostituted themselves with the Baals, and they
set up
Baal-berith as their god.
The trees went forth on a time to
anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive tree, Reign thou over us.
One day the trees
set out to
anoint a king for themselves. They said to the olive tree, ‘Reign over us.’
And the men of
Shechem set liers in wait for him in the top of the mountains, and they
robbed all that came along that way by them: and it was told
Abimelech.
And it shall be, that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, thou shalt rise early, and set upon the city: and, behold, when he and the people that is with him come out against thee, then mayest thou do to them as thou shalt find occasion.
And in the morning at
sunrise, get up and advance against the city. When Gaal and his men come out against you, do to them whatever you are able.”
And
Abimelech rose up, and all the people that were with him, by night, and they laid wait against
Shechem in four companies.
So
Abimelech and all his troops
set out by night and lay in wait against
Shechem in four companies.
And all the people likewise cut down every man his
bough, and followed
Abimelech, and put them to the hold, and
set the hold on fire upon them; so that all the men of the tower of
Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.
So each man also cut his own branch and followed
Abimelech. Then they piled the branches against the inner chamber and
set it on fire above them, killing
everyone in the tower of
Shechem, about a thousand men and women.
And
Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it, and went hard unto the door of the tower to burn it with fire.
When
Abimelech came to attack the tower, he approached its entrance to
set it on fire.
Then
Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of
Tob: and there were gathered vain men to
Jephthah, and went out with him.
So
Jephthah fled from his brothers and
settled in the land of
Tob, where worthless men gathered around him and traveled with him.
And
Samson said unto them, I will now put forth a
riddle unto you: if ye can certainly declare it me within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty sheets and thirty change of garments:
“Let me tell you a
riddle,”
Samson said to them. “If you can
solve it for me within the seven days of the feast, I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty
sets of clothes.
But if ye cannot declare it me, then shall ye give me thirty sheets and thirty change of garments. And they said unto him, Put forth thy
riddle, that we may hear it.
But if you cannot
solve it, you must give me thirty linen garments and thirty
sets of clothes.” “Tell us your
riddle,” they replied. “Let us hear it.”
And when he had set the brands on fire, he let them go into the standing corn of the Philistines, and burnt up both the shocks, and also the standing corn, with the vineyards and olives.
Then he
lit the torches and released the foxes into the standing grain of the Philistines, burning up the piles of grain and the standing grain, as well as the vineyards and olive groves.
And it came to pass, when their hearts were
merry, that they said, Call for
Samson, that he may make us
sport. And they called for
Samson out of the prison house; and he made them
sport: and they
set him between the pillars.
And while their hearts were
merry, they said, “Call for
Samson to
entertain us.” So they called
Samson out of the prison to
entertain them. And they stationed him between the pillars.
And the man departed out of the city from Bethlehemjudah to
sojourn where he could find a place: and he came to mount Ephraim to the house of
Micah, as he journeyed.
This man left the city of
Bethlehem in Judah to
settle where he could find a place. And as he traveled, he came to
Micah’s house in the hill country of Ephraim.
And
Micah said unto him, Whence comest thou? And he said unto him, I am a
Levite of Bethlehemjudah, and I go to
sojourn where I may find a place.
“Where are you from?”
Micah asked him. “I am a
Levite from
Bethlehem in Judah,” he replied, “and I am on my way to
settle wherever I can find a place.”
And the children of
Dan set up the
graven image: and
Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of
Manasseh, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of
Dan until the day of the captivity of the land.
The Danites
set up idols for themselves, and
Jonathan son of Gershom, the son of Moses, and his sons were priests for the tribe of
Dan until the day of the captivity of the land.
