And conspirators
plotted against
Amaziah in Jerusalem, and he fled to
Lachish. But men were sent after him to
Lachish, and they killed him
there.
For the LORD saw the
affliction of Israel, that it was very bitter: for
there was not any shut up, nor any left, nor any helper for Israel.
For the LORD saw that the
affliction of the Israelites, both slave and free, was very bitter.
There was no one to help Israel,
Save that the high places were not removed: the people sacrificed and burnt incense still on the high places.
Nevertheless, the high places were not taken away; the people continued sacrificing and burning incense there.
Then Menahem
smote Tiphsah, and all that were
therein, and the coasts
thereof from Tirzah: because they opened not to him,
therefore he
smote it; and all the women
therein that were with child he
ripped up.
At that time Menahem, starting from Tirzah, attacked Tiphsah and
everyone in its vicinity, because they would not open their gates. So he attacked Tiphsah and
ripped open all the
pregnant women.
And Menahem exacted the money of Israel, even of all the mighty men of wealth, of each man fifty shekels of silver, to give to the king of Assyria. So the king of Assyria turned back, and stayed not there in the land.
Menahem exacted this money from each of the wealthy men of Israel—fifty shekels of silver from each man—to give to the king of Assyria. So the king of Assyria withdrew and did not remain in the land.
Howbeit the high places were not removed: the people sacrificed and burned incense still in the high places. He built the higher gate of the house of the LORD.
Nevertheless, the high places were not taken away; the people continued sacrificing and burning incense there. Jotham rebuilt the Upper Gate of the house of the LORD.
At that time Rezin king of Syria recovered
Elath to Syria, and
drave the Jews from
Elath: and the Syrians came to
Elath, and dwelt
there unto this day.
At that time Rezin king of
Aram recovered
Elath for
Aram, drove out the men of Judah, and sent the Edomites into
Elath, where they live to this day.
And king
Ahaz went to Damascus to meet Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, and saw an altar that was at Damascus: and king
Ahaz sent to Urijah the priest the fashion of the altar, and the pattern of it, according to all the
workmanship thereof.
Then King
Ahaz went to Damascus to meet Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria. On seeing the altar in Damascus, King
Ahaz sent Uriah the priest a model of the altar and complete plans for its construction.
And when the king was come from Damascus, the king saw the altar: and the king approached to the altar, and offered
thereon.
When the king came back from Damascus and saw the altar, he approached it and presented offerings on it.
And the king of Assyria found
conspiracy in Hoshea: for he had sent messengers to So king of Egypt, and brought no present to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year:
therefore the king of Assyria shut him up, and bound him in prison.
But the king of Assyria discovered that Hoshea had
conspired to send envoys to King So of Egypt, and that he had not paid tribute to the king of Assyria as in previous years.
Therefore the king of Assyria arrested Hoshea and put him in prison.
And
there they burnt incense in all the high places, as did the heathen whom the LORD carried away before them; and wrought wicked things to
provoke the LORD to anger:
They burned incense on all the high places like the nations that the LORD had driven out before them. They did wicked things,
provoking the LORD to anger.
Therefore the LORD was very
angry with Israel, and removed them out of his sight:
there was none left but the tribe of Judah only.
So the LORD was very
angry with Israel, and He removed them from His presence. Only the tribe of Judah remained,
And the king of Assyria brought men from Babylon, and from Cuthah, and from
Ava, and from
Hamath, and from
Sepharvaim, and placed them in the cities of Samaria instead of the children of Israel: and they possessed Samaria, and dwelt in the cities
thereof.
Then the king of Assyria brought people from Babylon, Cuthah, Avva,
Hamath, and
Sepharvaim and settled them in the towns of Samaria to replace the Israelites. They took possession of Samaria and lived in its towns.
And so it was at the beginning of their dwelling
there, that they feared not the LORD:
therefore the LORD sent lions among them, which
slew some of them.
Now when the settlers first lived there, they did not worship the LORD, so He sent lions among them, which killed some of them.
Wherefore they spake to the king of Assyria, saying, The nations which thou hast removed, and placed in the cities of Samaria, know not the manner of the God of the land:
therefore he hath sent lions among them, and, behold, they
slay them, because they know not the manner of the God of the land.
So they spoke to the king of Assyria, saying, “The peoples that you have removed and placed in the cities of Samaria do not know the requirements of the God of the land. Because of this, He has sent lions among them, which are indeed killing them off.”
Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying, Carry thither one of the priests whom ye brought from thence; and let them go and dwell there, and let him teach them the manner of the God of the land.
Then the king of Assyria commanded: “Send back one of the priests you carried off from Samaria, and have him go back to live there and teach the requirements of the God of the land.”
He
smote the Philistines, even unto
Gaza, and the borders
thereof, from the tower of the
watchmen to the
fenced city.
He defeated the Philistines as far as
Gaza and its borders, from
watchtower to fortified city.
And when they had called to the king,
there came out to them Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, and Shebna the
scribe, and Joah the son of
Asaph the recorder.
Then they called for the king; and Eliakim son of Hilkiah the palace
administrator, Shebnah the
scribe, and Joah son of
Asaph the recorder, went out to them.
Now therefore, I pray thee, give pledges to my lord the king of Assyria, and I will deliver thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.
Now,
therefore, make a
bargain with my master, the king of Assyria. I will give you two thousand horses—if you can put riders on them!
And they said unto him, Thus saith
Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of
rebuke, and
blasphemy: for the children are come to the birth, and
there is not strength to bring forth.
to tell him, “This is what
Hezekiah says:
Today is a day of distress,
rebuke, and disgrace; for children have come to the point of birth, but
there is no strength to deliver them.
It may be the LORD thy God will hear all the words of
Rab-shakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God; and will reprove the words which the LORD thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the
remnant that are left.
Perhaps the LORD your God will hear all the words of the
Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to
defy the living God, and He will
rebuke him for the words that the LORD your God has heard.
Therefore lift up a prayer for the
remnant that still survives.”
And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them.
They have cast their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods, but only wood and stone—the work of human hands.
Now
therefore, O LORD our God, I
beseech thee, save thou us out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD God, even thou only.
And now, O LORD our God, please save us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You alone, O LORD, are God.”
By the messengers thou hast reproached the Lord, and hast said, With the multitude of my
chariots I am come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of
Lebanon, and will cut down the tall
cedar trees
thereof, and the choice
fir trees
thereof: and I will enter into the lodgings of his borders, and into the forest of his
Carmel.
Through your servants you have
taunted the Lord, and you have said: “With my many
chariots I have ascended to the heights of the mountains, to the remote peaks of
Lebanon. I have cut down its tallest cedars, the finest of its
cypresses. I have reached its
farthest outposts, the densest of its forests.
Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded; they were as the grass of the field, and as the green
herb, as the grass on the house tops, and as corn blasted before it be grown up.
Therefore their inhabitants, devoid of power, are dismayed and
ashamed. They are like plants in the field, tender green shoots, grass on the rooftops,
scorched before it is grown.
Because thy
rage against me and thy
tumult is come up into mine ears,
therefore I will put my hook in thy nose, and my
bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest.
Because your
rage and
arrogance against Me have reached My ears, I will put My hook in your nose and My
bit in your mouth; I will send you back the way you came.’
And this shall be a sign unto thee, Ye shall eat this year such things as grow of themselves, and in the second year that which springeth of the same; and in the third year
sow ye, and
reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruits
thereof.
And this will be a sign to you, O
Hezekiah: This year you will eat what grows on its own, and in the second year what springs from the same. But in the third year you will
sow and
reap; you will plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an
arrow there, nor come before it with shield, nor cast a bank against it.
So this is what the LORD says about the king of Assyria: ‘He will not enter this city or shoot an
arrow into it. He will not come before it with a shield or build up a siege
ramp against it.
And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the LORD went out, and
smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred
fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.
And that very night the angel of the LORD went out and struck down 185,000 men in the camp of the Assyrians. When the people got up the next morning, there were all the dead bodies!
So
Sennacherib king of Assyria broke camp and withdrew. He returned to
Nineveh and stayed
there.
And
Hezekiah hearkened unto them, and shewed them all the house of his precious things, the silver, and the gold, and the spices, and the precious
ointment, and all the house of his armour, and all that was found in his treasures:
there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that
Hezekiah shewed them not.
And
Hezekiah received the envoys and showed them all that was in his
treasure house—the silver, the gold, the spices, and the precious oil, as well as his
armory—all that was found in his storehouses.
There was nothing in his palace or in all his dominion that
Hezekiah did not show them.
And he said, What have they seen in thine house? And
Hezekiah answered, All the things that are in mine house have they seen:
there is nothing among my treasures that I have not shewed them.
“What have they seen in your palace?” Isaiah asked. “They have seen everything in my palace,” answered
Hezekiah. “
There is nothing among my treasures that I did not show them.”
Then said
Hezekiah unto Isaiah, Good is the word of the LORD which thou hast spoken. And he said, Is it not good, if peace and truth be in my days?
But
Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The word of the LORD that you have spoken is good.” For he thought, “Will
there not at least be peace and security in my lifetime?”
Therefore thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Behold, I am bringing such evil upon Jerusalem and Judah, that
whosoever heareth of it, both his ears shall
tingle.
this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Behold, I am bringing such
calamity upon Jerusalem and Judah that the news will
reverberate in the ears of all who hear it.
Howbeit there was no
reckoning made with them of the money that was delivered into their hand, because they dealt faithfully.
But they need not account for the money put into their hands, since they work with
integrity.”
Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the words of the book which the king of Judah hath read:
that this is what the LORD says: I am about to bring
calamity on this place and on its people, according to all the words of the book that the king of Judah has read,
Because they have
forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might
provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands;
therefore my wrath shall be
kindled against this place, and shall not be
quenched.
because they have
forsaken Me and burned incense to other gods, that they might
provoke Me to anger with all the works of their hands. My wrath will be
kindled against this place and will not be
quenched.’
Because thine heart was tender, and thou hast humbled
thyself before the LORD, when thou heardest what I spake against this place, and against the inhabitants
thereof, that they should become a
desolation and a
curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and
wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith the LORD.
because your heart was tender and you humbled
yourself before the LORD when you heard what I spoke against this place and against its people, that they would become a
desolation and a
curse, and because you have
torn your clothes and
wept before Me, I have heard you,’ declares the LORD.
Behold therefore, I will gather thee unto thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered into thy grave in peace; and thine eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place. And they brought the king word again.
‘
Therefore I will indeed gather you to your fathers, and you will be gathered to your grave in peace. Your eyes will not see all the
calamity that I will bring on this place.’” So they brought her answer back to the king.
And he brought out the
grove from the house of the LORD, without Jerusalem, unto the
brook Kidron, and burned it at the
brook Kidron, and stamped it small to powder, and cast the powder
thereof upon the graves of the children of the people.
He brought the Asherah pole from the house of the LORD to the Kidron Valley outside Jerusalem, and there he burned it, ground it to powder, and threw its dust on the graves of the common people.
And the altars that were on the top of the upper chamber of
Ahaz, which the kings of Judah had made, and the altars which
Manasseh had made in the two courts of the house of the LORD, did the king beat down, and
brake them down from thence, and cast the dust of them into the
brook Kidron.
He pulled down the altars that the kings of Judah had set up on the roof near the upper chamber of
Ahaz, and the altars that
Manasseh had set up in the two courtyards of the house of the LORD. The king
pulverized them
there and threw their dust into the Kidron Valley.
And as
Josiah turned himself, he
spied the
sepulchres that were
there in the mount, and sent, and took the bones out of the
sepulchres, and burned them upon the altar, and
polluted it, according to the word of the LORD which the man of God proclaimed, who proclaimed these words.
And as
Josiah turned, he saw the tombs
there on the
hillside, and he sent someone to take the bones out of the tombs, and he burned them on the altar to
defile it, according to the word of the LORD proclaimed by the man of God who had
foretold these things.
And he
slew all the priests of the high places that were
there upon the altars, and burned men’s bones upon them, and returned to Jerusalem.
On the altars he slaughtered all the priests of the high places, and he burned human bones on them. Then he returned to Jerusalem.
Surely
there was not
holden such a
passover from the days of the judges that judged Israel, nor in all the days of the kings of Israel, nor of the kings of Judah;
No such
Passover had been observed from the days of the judges who had governed Israel through all the days of the kings of Israel and Judah.
And like unto him was there no king before him, that turned to the LORD with all his heart, and with all his soul, and with all his might, according to all the law of Moses; neither after him arose there any like him.
Neither before nor after
Josiah was
there any king like him, who turned to the LORD with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his strength, according to all the Law of Moses.
And the LORD said, I will remove Judah also out of my sight, as I have removed Israel, and will cast off this city Jerusalem which I have chosen, and the house of which I said, My name shall be there.
For the LORD had said, “I will remove Judah from My sight, just as I removed Israel. I will
reject this city Jerusalem, which I chose, and the temple of which I said, ‘My Name shall be
there.’”
And Pharaoh-nechoh made Eliakim the son of
Josiah king in the room of
Josiah his father, and turned his name to
Jehoiakim, and took
Jehoahaz away: and he came to Egypt, and died
there.
Then Pharaoh Neco made Eliakim son of
Josiah king in place of his father
Josiah, and he changed Eliakim’s name to
Jehoiakim. But Neco took
Jehoahaz and carried him off to Egypt, where he died.
And on the ninth day of the fourth month the famine prevailed in the city, and there was no bread for the people of the land.
By the ninth day of the fourth month, the famine in the city was so severe that the people of the land had no food.
And the king of Babylon
smote them, and
slew them at Riblah in the land of
Hamath. So Judah was carried away out of their land.
There at Riblah in the land of
Hamath, the king of Babylon struck them down and put them to death. So Judah was taken into exile, away from its own land.
And when all the captains of the armies, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah governor,
there came to Gedaliah to
Mizpah, even
Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan the son of Careah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah the son of a Maachathite, they and their men.
When all the commanders of the armies and their men heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah as governor, they came to Gedaliah at
Mizpah—
Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan son of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah son of the Maacathite, as well as their men.
And he took Geshur, and
Aram, with the towns of
Jair, from them, with Kenath, and the towns
thereof, even
threescore cities. All these belonged to the sons of Machir the father of
Gilead.
But Geshur and
Aram captured Havvoth-
jair, along with Kenath and its sixty surrounding villages. All these were descendants of Machir the father of
Gilead.
These six were born unto him in
Hebron; and
there he reigned seven years and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years.
These six sons were born to David in
Hebron, where he reigned seven years and six months. And David reigned in Jerusalem thirty-three years,
These were the potters, and those that dwelt among plants and hedges: there they dwelt with the king for his work.
These were the potters who lived at Netaim and Gederah. They lived there in the service of the king.
And they found fat pasture and good, and the land was wide, and quiet, and peaceable; for they of
Ham had dwelt
there of old.
There they found rich, good pasture, and the land was
spacious, peaceful, and quiet; for some Hamites had lived
there formerly.
And these written by name came in the days of
Hezekiah king of Judah, and
smote their tents, and the habitations that were found
there, and destroyed them utterly unto this day, and dwelt in their rooms: because
there was pasture
there for their flocks.
These who were noted by name came in the days of
Hezekiah king of Judah. They attacked the Hamites and Meunites
there in their dwellings,
devoting them to destruction even to this day. Then they settled in their place, because
there was pasture for their flocks.
And they
smote the rest of the
Amalekites that were escaped, and dwelt
there unto this day.
and struck down the
remnant of the
Amalekites who had escaped. And they have lived
there to this day.
For there fell down many slain, because the war was of God. And they dwelt in their steads until the captivity.
and many others fell slain, because the battle belonged to God. And they occupied the land until the exile.
And these are they whom David set over the service of song in the house of the LORD, after that the ark had rest.
These are the men David put in charge of the music in the house of the LORD after the ark rested there.
And they gave them
Hebron in the land of Judah, and the suburbs
thereof round about it.
They were given
Hebron in the land of Judah and its surrounding pasturelands.
But the fields of the city, and the villages
thereof, they gave to
Caleb the son of Jephunneh.
But the fields and villages around the city were given to
Caleb son of Jephunneh.
And the sons of
Bela; Ezbon, and Uzzi, and Uzziel, and Jerimoth, and Iri, five; heads of the house of their fathers, mighty men of valour; and were reckoned by their
genealogies twenty and two thousand and thirty and four.
The sons of
Bela: Ezbon, Uzzi, Uzziel, Jerimoth, and Iri, heads of their families—five in all.
There were 22,034 mighty men of
valor listed in their
genealogies.
All these the sons of Jediael, by the heads of their fathers, mighty men of valour, were seventeen thousand and two hundred soldiers, fit to go out for war and battle.
Jeush, Benjamin, Ehud, Chenaanah, Zethan,
Tarshish, and Ahishahar. All these sons of Jediael were heads of their families, mighty men of
valor;
there were 17,200 fit for battle.
And their possessions and habitations were,
Bethel and the towns
thereof, and eastward Naaran, and westward
Gezer, with the towns
thereof;
Shechem also and the towns
thereof, unto
Gaza and the towns
thereof:
Their holdings and settlements included
Bethel and its villages, Naaran to the east,
Gezer and its villages to the west, and
Shechem and its villages as far as Ayyah and its villages.
The sons of Elpaal; Eber, and Misham, and Shamed, who built Ono, and Lod, with the towns thereof:
The sons of Elpaal:
And they
lodged round about the house of God, because the charge was upon them, and the opening
thereof every morning
pertained to them.
They would
spend the night stationed around the house of God, because they were responsible for guarding it and opening it every morning.
Then said Saul to his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through
therewith; lest these
uncircumcised come and
abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was
sore afraid. So Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.
Then Saul said to his
armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and run it through me, or these
uncircumcised men will come and
torture me!” But his
armor-bearer was
terrified and refused to do it. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it.
And enquired not of the LORD:
therefore he
slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of
Jesse.
and he failed to inquire of the LORD. So the LORD put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David son of
Jesse.
Therefore came all the elders of Israel to the king to
Hebron; and David made a covenant with them in
Hebron before the LORD; and they
anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD by Samuel.
So all the elders of Israel came to the king at
Hebron, where David made a covenant with them before the LORD. And they
anointed him king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD through Samuel.
And David dwelt in the castle; therefore they called it the city of David.
So David took up residence in the fortress; that is why it was called the City of David.
He was with David at
Pas-dammim, and
there the Philistines were gathered together to battle, where was a
parcel of ground full of barley; and the people fled from before the Philistines.
He was with David at
Pas-dammim when the Philistines gathered
there for battle. At the place with a field full of barley, the troops fled from the Philistines.
And said, My God
forbid it me, that I should do this thing: shall I drink the blood of these men that have put their lives in
jeopardy? for with the
jeopardy of their lives they brought it.
Therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mightiest.
saying, “Far be it from me, my God, to do this! How can I drink the blood of these men who risked their lives?” Because they had brought it at the risk of their lives, David refused to drink it. Such were the exploits of the three mighty men.
And of the Gadites
there separated themselves unto David into the hold to the wilderness men of might, and men of war fit for the battle, that could handle shield and
buckler, whose faces were like the faces of lions, and were as swift as the roes upon the mountains;
Some Gadites defected to David at his
stronghold in the desert. They were mighty men of
valor, trained for battle, experts with the shield and
spear, whose faces were like the faces of lions and who were as swift as gazelles on the mountains:
And there came of the children of Benjamin and Judah to the hold unto David.
Other Benjamites and some men from Judah also came to David in his
stronghold.
And David went out to meet them, and answered and said unto them, If ye be come
peaceably unto me to help me, mine heart shall be
knit unto you: but if ye be come to
betray me to mine enemies, seeing
there is no wrong in mine hands, the God of our fathers look
thereon, and
rebuke it.
And David went out to meet them, saying, “If you have come to me in peace to help me, my heart will be united with you; but if you have come to
betray me to my enemies when my hands are free of violence, may the God of our fathers see it and judge you.”
And
there fell some of
Manasseh to David, when he came with the Philistines against Saul to battle: but they helped them not: for the lords of the Philistines upon
advisement sent him away, saying, He will fall to his master Saul to the
jeopardy of our heads.
Some from
Manasseh defected to David when he went with the Philistines to fight against Saul. (They did not help the Philistines because the
Philistine rulers consulted and sent David away, saying, “It will cost us our heads if he defects to his master Saul.”)
As he went to
Ziklag,
there fell to him of
Manasseh, Adnah, and Jozabad, and Jediael, and Michael, and Jozabad, and
Elihu, and Zilthai, captains of the thousands that were of
Manasseh.
When David went to
Ziklag, these men of
Manasseh defected to him: Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad,
Elihu, and Zillethai, chiefs of thousands in
Manasseh.
For at that time day by day there came to David to help him, until it was a great host, like the host of God.
For at that time men came to David day after day to help him, until he had a great army, like the army of God.
And on the other side of Jordan, of the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and of the half tribe of
Manasseh, with all manner of instruments of war for the battle, an hundred and twenty thousand.
And from east of the Jordan, from
Reuben,
Gad, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh there: 120,000 armed with every kind of weapon of war.
And there they were with David three days, eating and drinking: for their brethren had prepared for them.
They spent three days there eating and drinking with David, for their relatives had provided for them.
Moreover they that were
nigh them, even unto
Issachar and
Zebulun and
Naphtali, brought bread on
asses, and on camels, and on mules, and on oxen, and meat, meal, cakes of figs, and bunches of
raisins, and wine, and oil, and oxen, and sheep abundantly: for
there was joy in Israel.
And their neighbors from as far away as
Issachar,
Zebulun, and
Naphtali came bringing food on
donkeys, camels, mules, and oxen—abundant supplies of flour, fig cakes and
raisin cakes, wine and oil, oxen and sheep. Indeed,
there was joy in Israel.
And David went up, and all Israel, to Baalah, that is, to Kirjath-jearim, which belonged to Judah, to bring up thence the ark of God the LORD, that dwelleth between the cherubims, whose name is called on it.
David and all Israel went up to Baalah of Judah (that is, Kiriath-jearim) to bring up from
there the ark of God the LORD, who is enthroned between the
cherubim—the ark that is called by the Name.
And the anger of the LORD was
kindled against Uzza, and he
smote him, because he put his hand to the ark: and
there he died before God.
And the anger of the LORD burned against Uzzah, and He struck him down because he had put his hand on the ark. So he died there before God.
So they came up to
Baal-perazim; and David
smote them
there. Then David said, God hath broken in upon mine enemies by mine hand like the breaking forth of waters:
therefore they called the name of that place
Baal-perazim.
So David and his men went up to
Baal-perazim, where he defeated the Philistines and said, “Like a
bursting flood, God has
burst out against my enemies by my hand.” So they called that place
Baal-perazim.
And when they had left their gods there, David gave a commandment, and they were burned with fire.
There the Philistines abandoned their gods, and David ordered that they be burned in the fire.
Therefore David enquired again of God; and God said unto him, Go not up after them; turn away from them, and come upon them over against the
mulberry trees.
So David again inquired of God, who answered him, “Do not march up after them, but circle around them and attack them in front of the
balsam trees.
David
therefore did as God commanded him: and they
smote the host of the Philistines from
Gibeon even to
Gazer.
So David did as God had commanded him, and they struck down the army of the Philistines all the way from
Gibeon to
Gezer.
And the children of the Levites bare the ark of God upon their shoulders with the
staves thereon, as Moses commanded according to the word of the LORD.
And the Levites carried the ark of God on their shoulders with the poles, as Moses had commanded in accordance with the word of the LORD.
Let the sea
roar, and the
fulness thereof: let the fields
rejoice, and all that is
therein.
Let the sea resound, and all that fills it; let the fields
exult, and all that is in them.
So he left
there before the ark of the covenant of the LORD
Asaph and his brethren, to minister before the ark continually, as every day’s work required:
So David left
Asaph and his brothers
there before the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to minister
there regularly according to the daily requirements,
Now
therefore thus shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the
sheepcote, even from following the sheep, that thou shouldest be ruler over my people Israel:
Now then, you are to tell My servant David that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: I took you from the pasture, from following the flock, to be the ruler over My people Israel.
O LORD, there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
O LORD, there is none like You, and there is no God but You, according to everything we have heard with our own ears.
Therefore now, LORD, let the thing that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant and concerning his house be established for ever, and do as thou hast said.
And now, O LORD, let the word You have spoken concerning Your servant and his house be established
forever. Do as You have promised,
For thou, O my God, hast told thy servant that thou
wilt build him an house:
therefore thy servant hath found in his heart to pray before thee.
For You, my God, have revealed to Your servant that You will build a house for him. Therefore Your servant has found the courage to pray before You.
Now
therefore let it please thee to
bless the house of thy servant, that it may be before thee for ever: for thou blessest, O LORD, and it shall be blessed for ever.
So now You have been pleased to
bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue
forever before You. For You, O LORD, have blessed it, and it will be blessed
forever.”
Then
there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly
ashamed. And the king said,
Tarry at
Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.
When someone came and told David about his men, he sent messengers to meet them, since the men had been thoroughly
humiliated. The king told them, “Stay in
Jericho until your beards have grown back, and then return.”
And David took the crown of their king from off his head, and found it to
weigh a talent of gold, and
there were precious stones in it; and it was set upon David’s head: and he brought also exceeding much
spoil out of the city.
Then David took the crown from the head of their king. It was found to
weigh a talent of gold and was set with precious stones, and it was placed on David’s head. And David took a great amount of
plunder from the city.
And he brought out the people that were in it, and cut them with saws, and with harrows of iron, and with axes. Even so dealt David with all the cities of the children of
Ammon. And David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.
David brought out the people who were
there and put them to work with saws, iron picks, and axes. And he did the same to all the
Ammonite cities. Then David and all his troops returned to Jerusalem.
And it came to pass after this, that
there arose war at
Gezer with the Philistines; at which time Sibbechai the Hushathite
slew Sippai, that was of the children of the
giant: and they were subdued.
Some time later, war broke out with the Philistines at
Gezer. At that time Sibbecai the Hushathite killed Sippai, a
descendant of the
Rephaim, and the Philistines were subdued.
And
there was war again with the Philistines; and Elhanan the son of
Jair slew Lahmi the brother of
Goliath the Gittite, whose
spear staff was like a
weaver’s beam.
Once again
there was a battle with the Philistines, and Elhanan son of
Jair killed Lahmi the brother of
Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose
spear was like a
weaver’s beam.
And yet again
there was war at
Gath, where was a man of great
stature, whose fingers and toes were four and twenty, six on each hand, and six on each foot: and he also was the son of the
giant.
And
there was still another battle at
Gath, where
there was a man of great
stature with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot—twenty-four in all. He too was descended from Rapha,
