And give occasions of speech against her, and bring up an evil name upon her, and say, I
took this woman, and when I came to her, I found her not a
maid:
and he then accuses her of shameful conduct and gives her a bad name, saying, “I married this woman and had relations with her, but I discovered she was not a virgin.”
And if the latter husband
hate her, and write her a bill of
divorcement, and giveth it in her hand, and sendeth her out of his house; or if the latter husband die, which
took her to be his wife;
and the second man hates her, writes her a
certificate of
divorce, hands it to her, and sends her away from his house, or if he dies,
And we
took their land, and gave it for an inheritance unto the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to the half tribe of
Manasseh.
We
took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh.
And he shall say, Where are their gods, their rock in whom they trusted,
He will say: “Where are their gods, the rock in which they took refuge,
And the woman
took the two men, and
hid them, and said thus, There came men unto me, but I
wist not whence they were:
But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. So she said, “
Yes, the men did come to me, but I did not know where they had come from.
And Joshua spake unto the priests, saying, Take up the ark of the covenant, and pass over before the people. And they took up the ark of the covenant, and went before the people.
And he said to the priests, “Take the ark of the covenant and go on
ahead of the people.” So they carried the ark of the covenant and went
ahead of them.
And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and
took up twelve stones out of the midst of Jordan, as the LORD spake unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them unto the place where they
lodged, and laid them down there.
Thus the Israelites did as Joshua had commanded them. They took up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, one for each tribe of Israel, just as the LORD had told Joshua; and they carried them to the camp, where they set them down.
And those twelve stones, which they
took out of Jordan, did Joshua pitch in
Gilgal.
And there at
Gilgal Joshua set up the twelve stones they had taken from the Jordan.
And Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of the LORD.
Joshua got up early the next morning, and the priests took the ark of the LORD.
So the people
shouted when the priests
blew with the
trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the
trumpet, and the people
shouted with a great
shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they
took the city.
So when the rams’ horns sounded, the people
shouted. When they heard the blast of the horn, the people gave a great
shout, and the wall
collapsed. Then all the people charged straight into the city and captured it.
But the children of Israel committed a
trespass in the
accursed thing: for
Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah,
took of the
accursed thing: and the anger of the LORD was
kindled against the children of Israel.
The Israelites, however, acted unfaithfully regarding the things devoted to destruction.
Achan son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah,
took some of what was set apart. So the anger of the LORD burned against the Israelites.
And he brought the family of Judah; and he took the family of the Zarhites: and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man; and Zabdi was taken:
He had the clans of Judah come forward, and the clan of the Zerahites was selected. He had the clan of the Zerahites come forward, and the family of Zabdi was selected.
When I saw among the spoils a goodly
Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a
wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I
coveted them, and
took them; and, behold, they are
hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.
When I saw among the spoils a beautiful
cloak from
Shinar, two hundred shekels of silver, and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels, I
coveted them and
took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver
underneath.”
And they took them out of the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the LORD.
They took the things from inside the tent, brought them to Joshua and all the Israelites, and spread them out before the LORD.
And Joshua, and all Israel with him,
took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the
wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his
asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them unto the valley of
Achor.
Then Joshua, together with all Israel,
took Achan son of Zerah, the silver, the
cloak, the bar of gold, his sons and daughters, his oxen and
donkeys and sheep, his tent, and everything else he owned, and brought them to the Valley of
Achor.
And he
took about five thousand men, and set them to lie in
ambush between
Bethel and
Ai, on the west side of the city.
Now Joshua had taken about five thousand men and set up an
ambush between
Bethel and
Ai, to the west of the city.
And the
ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand: and they entered into the city, and
took it, and hasted and set the city on fire.
and as soon as he did so, the men in
ambush rose quickly from their position. They
rushed forward, entered the city, captured it, and immediately set it on fire.
And the king of
Ai they
took alive, and brought him to Joshua.
But they
took the king of
Ai alive and brought him to Joshua.
Only the cattle and the
spoil of that city Israel
took for a prey unto themselves, according unto the word of the LORD which he commanded Joshua.
Israel
took for themselves only the cattle and
plunder of that city, as the LORD had commanded Joshua.
They did work
wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and
took old sacks upon their
asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;
This our bread we
took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is
mouldy:
This bread of ours was warm when we
packed it at home on the day we left to come to you. But take a look, it is now dry and
moldy.
And the men
took of their
victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.
Then the men of Israel sampled their provisions, but did not seek the counsel of the LORD.
And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had
avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.
So the sun stood still and the moon stopped until the nation
took vengeance upon its enemies. Is this not written in the Book of
Jashar? “So the sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day.”
And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they
took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had been
hid, and laid great stones in the cave’s mouth, which remain until this very day.
At
sunset Joshua ordered that they be taken down from the trees and thrown into the cave in which they had hidden. Then large stones were placed against the mouth of the cave, and the stones are there to this day.
And that day Joshua
took Makkedah, and
smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof he utterly destroyed, them, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain: and he did to the king of Makkedah as he did unto the king of
Jericho.
On that day Joshua captured Makkedah and put it to the sword, along with its king. He devoted to destruction
everyone in the city, leaving no survivors. So he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of
Jericho.
And the LORD delivered
Lachish into the hand of Israel, which
took it on the second day, and
smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to
Libnah.
And the LORD delivered
Lachish into the hand of Israel, and Joshua captured it on the second day. He put all the people to the sword, just as he had done to
Libnah.
And they
took it on that day, and
smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to
Lachish.
That day they captured
Eglon and put it to the sword, and Joshua devoted to destruction
everyone in the city, just as he had done to
Lachish.
And they
took it, and
smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to
Eglon; but destroyed it utterly, and all the souls that were therein.
They captured it and put to the sword its king, all its villages, and all the people. Joshua left no survivors, just as he had done at
Eglon; he devoted to destruction
Hebron and
everyone in it.
And he
took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they
smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to
Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to
Libnah, and to her king.
And they captured Debir, its king, and all its villages. They put them to the sword and devoted to destruction
everyone in the city, leaving no survivors. Joshua did to Debir and its king as he had done to
Hebron and as he had done to
Libnah and its king.
And Joshua at that time turned back, and
took Hazor, and
smote the king thereof with the sword: for Hazor
beforetime was the head of all those kingdoms.
At that time Joshua turned back and captured Hazor and put its king to the sword, because Hazor was formerly the head of all these kingdoms.
And all the
spoil of these cities, and the cattle, the children of Israel
took for a prey unto themselves; but every man they
smote with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them, neither left they any to
breathe.
The Israelites
took for themselves all the
plunder and
livestock of these cities, but they put all the people to the sword until they had completely destroyed them, not
sparing anyone who breathed.
So Joshua
took all that land, the hills, and all the south country, and all the land of
Goshen, and the valley, and the plain, and the mountain of Israel, and the valley of the same;
So Joshua
took this entire region: the hill country, all the Negev, all the land of
Goshen, the western foothills, the Arabah, and the mountains of Israel and their foothills,
Even from the mount Halak, that goeth up to
Seir, even unto
Baal-
gad in the valley of
Lebanon under mount
Hermon: and all their kings he
took, and
smote them, and
slew them.
from Mount Halak, which rises toward
Seir, as far as
Baal-
gad in the Valley of
Lebanon at the foot of Mount
Hermon. He captured all their kings and struck them down, putting them to death.
There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, save the
Hivites the inhabitants of
Gibeon: all other they
took in battle.
No city made peace with the Israelites except the
Hivites living in
Gibeon; all others were taken in battle.
So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD said unto Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land rested from war.
So Joshua took the entire land, in keeping with all that the LORD had spoken to Moses. And Joshua gave it as an inheritance to Israel according to the allotments to their tribes. Then the land had rest from war.
Now these are the kings of the land, which the children of Israel
smote, and possessed their land on the other side Jordan toward the rising of the sun, from the river
Arnon unto mount
Hermon, and all the plain on the east:
Now these are the kings of the land whom the Israelites struck down and whose lands they
took beyond the Jordan to the east, from the
Arnon Valley to Mount
Hermon, including all the Arabah eastward:
And Othniel the son of Kenaz, the brother of
Caleb,
took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.
So Othniel son of
Caleb’s brother Kenaz captured the city, and
Caleb gave his daughter Acsah to him in marriage.
So the children of Joseph,
Manasseh and Ephraim,
took their inheritance.
So Ephraim and
Manasseh, the sons of Joseph, received their inheritance.
And the coast of the children of
Dan went out too little for them: therefore the children of
Dan went up to fight against Leshem, and
took it, and
smote it with the edge of the sword, and possessed it, and dwelt therein, and called Leshem,
Dan, after the name of
Dan their father.
(Later, when the territory of the Danites was lost to them, they went up and fought against Leshem, captured it, and put it to the sword. So they
took possession of Leshem, settled there, and renamed it after their father
Dan.)
And the LORD gave unto Israel all the land which he
sware to give unto their fathers; and they possessed it, and dwelt therein.
Thus the LORD gave Israel all the land He had
sworn to give their fathers, and they
took possession of it and settled in it.
And I
took your father Abraham from the other side of the flood, and led him throughout all the land of
Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac.
But I
took your father Abraham from beyond the Euphrates and led him through all the land of
Canaan, and I multiplied his descendants. I gave him Isaac,
And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God, and took a great stone, and set it up there under an oak, that was by the sanctuary of the LORD.
Joshua recorded these things in the Book of the Law of God. Then he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak that was near the sanctuary of the LORD.
And Othniel the son of Kenaz,
Caleb’s younger brother,
took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.
So Othniel son of
Caleb’s younger brother Kenaz captured the city, and
Caleb gave his daughter Acsah to him in marriage.
Also Judah
took Gaza with the coast thereof, and
Askelon with the coast thereof, and
Ekron with the coast thereof.
And Judah also captured
Gaza, Ashkelon, and
Ekron—each with its territory.
And the LORD was with Judah; and he
drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had
chariots of iron.
The LORD was with Judah, and they
took possession of the hill country; but they could not drive out the inhabitants of the plains because they had
chariots of iron.
And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.
And they took the daughters of these people in marriage, gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods.
And Ehud put forth his left hand, and
took the
dagger from his right
thigh, and thrust it into his
belly:
And Ehud reached with his left hand, pulled the sword from his right
thigh, and
plunged it into
Eglon’s
belly.
And they
tarried till they were
ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlour; therefore they
took a key, and opened them: and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.
So they waited until they became
worried and saw that he had still not opened the doors of the upper room. Then they
took the key and opened the doors—and there was their lord lying dead on the floor.
And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.
“Follow me,” he told them, “for the LORD has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” So they followed him down and seized the fords of the Jordan leading to Moab, and did not allow
anyone to cross over.
Then Jael
Heber’s wife
took a
nail of the tent, and
took an hammer in her hand, and went softly unto him, and
smote the
nail into his temples, and fastened it into the ground: for he was fast
asleep and
weary. So he died.
But as he lay sleeping from
exhaustion,
Heber’s wife Jael
took a tent
peg,
grabbed a hammer, and went silently to Sisera. She drove the
peg through his temple and into the ground, and he died.
In the days of Shamgar the son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the
highways were unoccupied, and the travelers walked through byways.
In the days of Shamgar son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the
highways were deserted and the travelers
took the byways.
The kings came and fought, then fought the kings of
Canaan in Taanach by the waters of
Megiddo; they
took no gain of money.
Kings came and fought; then the kings of
Canaan fought at Taanach by the waters of
Megiddo, but they
took no
plunder of silver.
Then
Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the LORD had said unto him: and so it was, because he feared his father’s household, and the men of the city, that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.
So
Gideon took ten of his servants and did as the LORD had told him. But because he was too afraid of his father’s household and the men of the city, he did it by night rather than in the
daytime.
So the people
took victuals in their hand, and their
trumpets: and he sent all the rest of Israel every man unto his tent, and retained those three hundred men: and the host of
Midian was beneath him in the valley.
So
Gideon sent the rest of the Israelites to their tents but kept the three hundred men, who
took charge of the provisions and rams’ horns of the others. And the camp of
Midian lay below him in the valley.
And they stood every man in his place round about the camp: and all the host ran, and
cried, and fled.
Each
Israelite took his position around the camp, and the entire Midianite army fled, crying out as they ran.
And
Gideon sent messengers throughout all mount Ephraim, saying, Come down against the Midianites, and take before them the waters unto Beth-barah and Jordan. Then all the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and
took the waters unto Beth-barah and Jordan.
Gideon sent messengers throughout the hill country of Ephraim to say, “Come down against the Midianites and seize the waters of the Jordan
ahead of them as far as Beth-barah.” So all the men of Ephraim were called out, and they captured the waters of the Jordan as far as Beth-barah.
And they
took two princes of the Midianites, Oreb and Zeeb; and they
slew Oreb upon the rock Oreb, and Zeeb they
slew at the winepress of Zeeb, and pursued
Midian, and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to
Gideon on the other side Jordan.
They also captured Oreb and Zeeb, the two princes of
Midian; and they killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb and Zeeb at the winepress of Zeeb. So they pursued the Midianites and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to
Gideon on the other side of the Jordan.
And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued after them, and
took the two kings of
Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and
discomfited all the host.
When Zebah and Zalmunna fled,
Gideon pursued and captured these two kings of
Midian, routing their entire army.
And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.
Then he took the elders of the city, and using the thorns and briers of the wilderness, he disciplined the men of Succoth.
Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man is, so is his strength. And
Gideon arose, and
slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and
took away the ornaments that were on their camels’ necks.
Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, “Get up and kill us
yourself, for as the man is, so is his strength.” So
Gideon got up and killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and he
took the
crescent ornaments from the necks of their camels.
And he
took the people, and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field, and looked, and, behold, the people were come forth out of the city; and he rose up against them, and
smote them.
So he took his men, divided them into three companies, and lay in wait in the fields. When he saw the people coming out of the city, he rose up against them and attacked them.
And
Abimelech, and the company that was with him,
rushed forward, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and the two other companies ran upon all the people that were in the fields, and
slew them.
Then
Abimelech and the companies with him
rushed forward and
took their stand at the entrance of the city gate. The other two companies
rushed against all who were in the fields and struck them down.
And
Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he
took the city, and
slew the people that was therein, and beat down the city, and
sowed it with salt.
And all that day
Abimelech fought against the city until he had captured it and killed its people. Then he
demolished the city and
sowed it with salt.
And
Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were with him; and
Abimelech took an
axe in his hand, and cut down a
bough from the trees, and
took it, and laid it on his shoulder, and said unto the people that were with him, What ye have seen me do, make
haste, and do as I have done.
he and all his men went up to Mount Zalmon.
Abimelech took his
axe in his hand and cut a branch from the trees, which he lifted to his shoulder, saying to his men, “
Hurry and do what you have seen me do.”
And the king of the children of
Ammon answered unto the messengers of
Jephthah, Because Israel
took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from
Arnon even unto
Jabbok, and unto Jordan: now therefore restore those lands again
peaceably.
The king of the
Ammonites answered
Jephthah’s messengers, “When Israel came up out of Egypt, they seized my land, from the
Arnon to the
Jabbok and all the way to the Jordan. Now, therefore, restore it
peaceably.”
And said unto him, Thus saith
Jephthah, Israel
took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of
Ammon:
to tell him, “This is what
Jephthah says: Israel did not take away the land of Moab or of the
Ammonites.
And the LORD God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they
smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the
Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.
Then the LORD, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, who defeated them. So Israel
took possession of all the land of the
Amorites who inhabited that country,
And the Gileadites
took the passages of Jordan before the Ephraimites: and it was so, that when those Ephraimites which were escaped said, Let me go over; that the men of
Gilead said unto him, Art thou an Ephraimite? If he said,
Nay;
The Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan leading to Ephraim, and whenever a
fugitive from Ephraim would say, “Let me cross over,” the Gileadites would ask him, “Are you an Ephraimite?” If he answered, “No,”
Then said they unto him, Say now
Shibboleth: and he said Sibboleth: for he could not frame to
pronounce it right. Then they
took him, and
slew him at the passages of Jordan: and there fell at that time of the Ephraimites forty and two thousand.
they told him, “Please say
Shibboleth.” If he said, “Sibboleth,” because he could not
pronounce it correctly, they seized him and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. So at that time 42,000 Ephraimites were killed.
And he had thirty sons, and thirty daughters, whom he sent abroad, and took in thirty daughters from abroad for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years.
He had thirty sons, as well as thirty daughters whom he gave in marriage to men outside his clan; and for his sons he brought back thirty wives from elsewhere. Ibzan judged Israel seven years.
So
Manoah took a
kid with a meat offering, and offered it upon a rock unto the LORD: and the angel did wonderously; and
Manoah and his wife looked on.
Then
Manoah took a young goat and a grain offering and offered them on a rock to the LORD. And as
Manoah and his wife looked on, the LORD did a
marvelous thing.
And he
took thereof in his hands, and went on eating, and came to his father and mother, and he gave them, and they did eat: but he told not them that he had taken the honey out of the
carcase of the lion.
So he
scooped some honey into his hands and
ate it as he went along. And when he returned to his father and mother, he gave some to them and they
ate it. But he did not tell them that he had taken the honey from the lion’s
carcass.
And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, and
slew thirty men of them, and
took their
spoil, and gave change of garments unto them which
expounded the
riddle. And his anger was
kindled, and he went up to his father’s house.
Then the Spirit of the LORD came
mightily upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, killed thirty of their men,
took their
apparel, and gave their clothes to those who had
solved the
riddle. And burning with anger,
Samson returned to his father’s house,
But it came to pass within a while after, in the time of wheat harvest, that
Samson visited his wife with a
kid; and he said, I will go in to my wife into the chamber. But her father would not suffer him to go in.
Later on, at the time of the wheat harvest,
Samson took a young goat and went to visit his wife. “I want to go to my wife in her room,” he said. But her father would not let him enter.
And
Samson went and caught three hundred foxes, and
took firebrands, and turned tail to tail, and put a
firebrand in the midst between two tails.
Then
Samson went out and caught three hundred foxes. And he
took torches, turned the foxes tail-to-tail, and fastened a
torch between each pair of tails.
He found the fresh
jawbone of a
donkey, reached out his hand and
took it, and struck down a thousand men.
And
Samson lay till
midnight, and arose at
midnight, and
took the doors of the gate of the city, and the two posts, and went away with them, bar and all, and put them upon his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of an hill that is before
Hebron.
But
Samson lay there only until
midnight, when he got up,
took hold of the doors of the city gate and both gateposts, and pulled them out, bar and all. Then he put them on his shoulders and
took them to the top of the mountain overlooking
Hebron.
Delilah therefore
took new ropes, and bound him
therewith, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee,
Samson. And there were liers in wait
abiding in the chamber. And he
brake them from off his arms like a thread.
So
Delilah took new ropes,
tied him up with them, and called out, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!” But while the men were hidden in her room, he
snapped the ropes off his arms like they were threads.
And she fastened it with the pin, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee,
Samson. And he
awaked out of his sleep, and went away with the pin of the beam, and with the web.
So while he
slept,
Delilah took the seven braids of his hair and
wove them into the web. Then she
tightened it with a pin and called to him, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!” But he
awoke from his sleep and pulled out the pin with the
loom and the web.
But the Philistines
took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to
Gaza, and bound him with
fetters of brass; and he did
grind in the prison house.
Then the Philistines seized him,
gouged out his eyes, and brought him down to
Gaza, where he was bound with bronze
shackles and forced to
grind grain in the prison.
And
Samson took hold of the two middle pillars upon which the house stood, and on which it was borne up, of the one with his right hand, and of the other with his left.
And
Samson reached out for the two central pillars supporting the temple.
Bracing himself against them with his right hand on one
pillar and his left hand on the other,
Then his brethren and all the house of his father came down, and
took him, and brought him up, and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the buryingplace of
Manoah his father. And he judged Israel twenty years.
Then
Samson’s brothers and his father’s family came down, carried him back, and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of his father
Manoah. And he had judged Israel twenty years.
And he said unto his mother, The eleven hundred shekels of silver that were taken from thee, about which thou cursedst, and spakest of also in mine ears, behold, the silver is with me; I took it. And his mother said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my son.
said to his mother, “The eleven hundred shekels of silver that were taken from you and about which I heard you utter a
curse—I have the silver here with me; I
took it.” Then his mother said, “Blessed be my son by the LORD!”
Yet he restored the money unto his mother; and his mother
took two hundred shekels of silver, and gave them to the founder, who made thereof a
graven image and a
molten image: and they were in the house of
Micah.
So he returned the silver to his mother, and she
took two hundred shekels of silver and gave them to a
silversmith, who made them into a
graven image and a
molten idol. And they were placed in the house of
Micah.
And the five men that went to
spy out the land went up, and came in thither, and
took the
graven image, and the
ephod, and the
teraphim, and the
molten image: and the priest stood in the entering of the gate with the six hundred men that were appointed with weapons of war.
And the five men who had gone to
spy out the land went inside and
took the
graven image, the
ephod, the household idols, and the
molten idol, while the priest stood at the entrance of the gate with the six hundred armed men.
And these went into
Micah’s house, and
fetched the carved image, the
ephod, and the
teraphim, and the
molten image. Then said the priest unto them, What do ye?
When they entered
Micah’s house and
took the
graven image, the
ephod, the household idols, and the
molten idol, the priest said to them, “What are you doing?”
And the priest’s heart was
glad, and he
took the
ephod, and the
teraphim, and the
graven image, and went in the midst of the people.
So the priest was
glad and
took the
ephod, the household idols, and the
graven image, and went with the people.
And he said, Ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and ye are gone away: and what have I more? and what is this that ye say unto me, What aileth thee?
He replied, “You took the gods I had made, and my priest, and went away. What else do I have? How can you say to me, ‘What is the matter with you?’”
And they
took the things which
Micah had made, and the priest which he had, and came unto Laish, unto a people that were at quiet and secure: and they
smote them with the edge of the sword, and burnt the city with fire.
After they had taken
Micah’s idols and his priest, they went to Laish, to a
tranquil and
unsuspecting people, and they struck them with their swords and burned down the city.
And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain
Levite sojourning on the side of mount Ephraim, who
took to him a
concubine out of Bethlehemjudah.
Now in those days, when there was no king in Israel, a
Levite who lived in the remote hill country of Ephraim
took for himself a
concubine from
Bethlehem in Judah.
And they turned aside thither, to go in and to
lodge in Gibeah: and when he went in, he sat him down in a street of the city: for there was no man that
took them into his house to
lodging.
They stopped to go in and
lodge in Gibeah. The
Levite went in and sat down in the city square, but no one would take them into his home for the night.
But the men would not
hearken to him: so the man
took his
concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and
abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.
But the men would not
listen to him. So the
Levite took his
concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and
abused her throughout the night, and at
dawn they let her go.
And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going. But none answered. Then the man
took her up upon an
ass, and the man rose up, and
gat him unto his place.
“Get up,” he told her. “Let us go.” But there was no
response. So the man put her on his
donkey and set out for home.
And when he was come into his house, he
took a knife, and laid hold on his
concubine, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel.
When he reached his house, he
picked up a knife,
took hold of his
concubine, cut her limb by limb into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout the territory of Israel.
And I
took my
concubine, and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israel: for they have committed
lewdness and folly in Israel.
Then I
took my
concubine, cut her into pieces, and sent her throughout the land of Israel’s inheritance, because they had committed a
lewd and disgraceful act in Israel.
And the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin; and the men of Israel put themselves in
array to fight against them at Gibeah.
And the men of Israel went out to fight against Benjamin and took up their battle positions at Gibeah.
And the people the men of Israel encouraged themselves, and set their battle again in
array in the place where they put themselves in
array the first day.
But the
Israelite army
took courage and again
took their battle positions in the same place where they had
arrayed themselves on the first day.
And the children of Benjamin did so, and took them wives, according to their number, of them that danced, whom they caught: and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and repaired the cities, and dwelt in them.
The Benjamites did as
instructed and carried away the number of women they needed from the dancers they caught. They went back to their own inheritance, rebuilt their cities, and settled in them.
And they
took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other
Ruth: and they dwelled there about ten years.
who
took Moabite women as their wives, one named Orpah and the other named
Ruth. And after they had lived in Moab about ten years,
