And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her companions, and
bewailed her
virginity upon the mountains.
“Go,” he said. And he sent her away for two months. So she left with her friends and
mourned her
virginity upon the mountains.
And the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and went northward, and said unto
Jephthah, Wherefore passedst thou over to fight against the children of
Ammon, and
didst not call us to go with thee? we will burn thine house
upon thee with fire.
Then the men of Ephraim assembled and crossed the Jordan to Zaphon. They said to
Jephthah, “Why have you crossed over to fight the
Ammonites without calling us to go with you? We will burn your house down with you inside!”
So
Manoah took a
kid with a meat offering, and offered it
upon a rock unto the LORD: and the angel did wonderously; and
Manoah and his wife looked on.
Then
Manoah took a young goat and a grain offering and offered them on a rock to the LORD. And as
Manoah and his wife looked on, the LORD did a
marvelous thing.
And the Spirit of the LORD came
mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a
kid, and he had nothing in his hand: but he told not his father or his mother what he had done.
and the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully
upon him, and he
tore the lion apart with his bare hands as one would
tear a young goat. But he did not tell his father or mother what he had done.
And she
wept before him the seven days, while their feast lasted: and it came to pass on the seventh day, that he told her, because she lay
sore upon him: and she told the
riddle to the children of her people.
She
wept the whole seven days of the feast, and finally on the seventh day, because she had pressed him so much, he told her the answer. And in turn she explained the
riddle to her people.
And the Spirit of the LORD came
upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, and
slew thirty men of them, and took their
spoil, and gave change of garments unto them which
expounded the
riddle. And his anger was
kindled, and he went up to his father’s house.
Then the Spirit of the LORD came
mightily upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, killed thirty of their men, took their
apparel, and gave their clothes to those who had
solved the
riddle. And burning with anger,
Samson returned to his father’s house,
And
Samson said unto them, Though ye have done this, yet will I be
avenged of you, and after that I will cease.
And
Samson told them, “Because you have done this, I will not rest until I have taken
vengeance upon you.”
And they said unto him, We are come down to bind thee, that we may deliver thee into the hand of the Philistines. And
Samson said unto them,
Swear unto me, that ye will not fall
upon me
yourselves.
But they said to him, “We have come down to arrest you and hand you over to the Philistines.”
Samson replied, “
Swear to me that you will not kill me
yourselves.”
And when he came unto Lehi, the Philistines
shouted against him: and the Spirit of the LORD came
mightily upon him, and the cords that were
upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands.
When
Samson arrived in Lehi, the Philistines came out
shouting against him. And the Spirit of the LORD came
mightily upon him. The ropes on his arms became like burnt flax, and the bonds broke loose from his hands.
And
Samson said, With the
jawbone of an
ass, heaps
upon heaps, with the jaw of an
ass have I slain a thousand men.
And
Samson lay till
midnight, and arose at
midnight, and took the doors of the gate of the city, and the two posts, and went away with them, bar and all, and put them
upon his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of an hill that is before
Hebron.
But
Samson lay there only until
midnight, when he got up, took hold of the doors of the city gate and both gateposts, and pulled them out, bar and all. Then he put them on his shoulders and took them to the top of the mountain overlooking
Hebron.
Now there were men lying in wait,
abiding with her in the chamber. And she said unto him, The Philistines be
upon thee,
Samson. And he
brake the withs, as a thread of
tow is broken when it toucheth the fire. So his strength was not known.
While the men were hidden in her room, she called out, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!” But he
snapped the bowstrings like a
strand of yarn
seared by a flame. So the source of his strength remained unknown.
Delilah therefore took new ropes, and bound him
therewith, and said unto him, The Philistines be
upon thee,
Samson. And there were liers in wait
abiding in the chamber. And he
brake them from off his arms like a thread.
So
Delilah took new ropes,
tied him up with them, and called out, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!” But while the men were hidden in her room, he
snapped the ropes off his arms like they were threads.
And she fastened it with the pin, and said unto him, The Philistines be
upon thee,
Samson. And he
awaked out of his sleep, and went away with the pin of the beam, and with the web.
So while he
slept,
Delilah took the seven braids of his hair and
wove them into the web. Then she
tightened it with a pin and called to him, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!” But he
awoke from his sleep and pulled out the pin with the
loom and the web.
That he told her all his heart, and said unto her. There hath not come a
razor upon mine head; for I have been a
Nazarite unto God from my mother’s
womb: if I be
shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.
Samson told her all that was in his heart: “My hair has never been cut, because I have been a
Nazirite to God from my mother’s
womb. If I am
shaved, my strength will leave me, and I will become as weak as any other man.”
And she made him sleep
upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to
shave off the seven locks of his head; and she began to
afflict him, and his strength went from him.
And having
lulled him to sleep on her
lap, she called a man to
shave off the seven braids of his head. In this way she began to
subdue him, and his strength left him.
And she said, The Philistines be
upon thee,
Samson. And he
awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and
shake myself. And he
wist not that the LORD was departed from him.
Then she called out, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!” When
Samson awoke from his sleep, he thought, “I will escape as I did before and
shake myself free.” But he did not know that the LORD had departed from him.
And
Samson said unto the
lad that held him by the hand, Suffer me that I may feel the pillars
whereupon the house standeth, that I may
lean upon them.
Samson said to the servant who held his hand, “Lead me where I can feel the pillars supporting the temple, so I can
lean against them.”
Now the house was full of men and women; and all the lords of the Philistines were there; and there were
upon the roof about three thousand men and women, that
beheld while
Samson made
sport.
Now the temple was full of men and women; all the lords of the Philistines were there, and about three thousand men and women were on the roof watching
Samson entertain them.
And
Samson took hold of the two middle pillars
upon which the house stood, and on which it was borne up, of the one with his right hand, and of the other with his left.
And
Samson reached out for the two central pillars supporting the temple.
Bracing himself against them with his right hand on one
pillar and his left hand on the other,
And
Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines. And he bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell
upon the lords, and
upon all the people that were therein. So the dead which he
slew at his death were more than they which he
slew in his life.
Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines.” Then he pushed with all his might, and the temple fell on the lords and all the people in it. So in his death he killed more than he had killed in his life.
And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be a priest unto the house of one man, or that thou be a priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?
“Be quiet,” they told him. “Put your hand over your mouth and come with us and be a father and a priest to us. Is it better for you to be a priest for the house of one person or a priest for a tribe and family in Israel?”
And the children of
Dan said unto him, Let not thy voice be heard among us, lest
angry fellows run
upon thee, and thou lose thy life, with the lives of thy household.
The Danites said to him, “Do not raise your voice against us, or
angry men will attack you, and you and your family will lose your lives.”
And they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down upon them when they were by Gibeah, which belongeth to Benjamin.
So they continued on their journey, and the sun set as they neared Gibeah in Benjamin.
And the old man said, Peace be with thee;
howsoever let all thy wants lie
upon me; only
lodge not in the street.
“Peace to you,” said the old man. “Let me supply everything you need. Only do not
spend the night in the square.”
And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way: and, behold, the woman his
concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, and her hands were
upon the
threshold.
In the morning, when her master got up and opened the doors of the house to go out on his journey, there was his
concubine,
collapsed in the
doorway of the house, with her hands on the
threshold.
And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going. But none answered. Then the man took her up
upon an
ass, and the man rose up, and
gat him unto his place.
“Get up,” he told her. “Let us go.” But there was no
response. So the man put her on his
donkey and set out for home.
And the men of Gibeah rose against me, and
beset the house round about
upon me by night, and thought to have slain me: and my
concubine have they forced, that she is dead.
And during the night, the men of Gibeah rose up against me and surrounded the house. They intended to kill me, but they
abused my
concubine, and she died.
And there came against Gibeah ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and the battle was
sore: but they knew not that evil was near them.
Then 10,000 select men from all Israel made a
frontal assault against Gibeah, and the battle was fierce. But the Benjamites did not
realize that
disaster was
upon them.
And the liers in wait hasted, and
rushed upon Gibeah; and the liers in wait drew themselves along, and
smote all the city with the edge of the sword.
The men in
ambush rushed suddenly against Gibeah; they advanced and put the whole city to the sword.
And when the men of Israel turned again, the men of Benjamin were
amazed: for they saw that evil was come
upon them.
Then the men of Israel turned back on them, and the men of Benjamin were
terrified when they realized that
disaster had come
upon them.
And the men of Israel turned again
upon the children of Benjamin, and
smote them with the edge of the sword, as well the men of every city, as the beast, and all that came to hand: also they set on fire all the cities that they came to.
And the men of Israel turned back against the other Benjamites and put to the sword all the cities, including the animals and everything else they found. And they burned down all the cities in their path.
Wash
thyself therefore, and
anoint thee, and put thy
raiment upon thee, and get thee down to the floor: but make not
thyself known unto the man, until he shall have done eating and drinking.
Therefore wash
yourself, put on
perfume, and wear your best clothes. Go down to the
threshing floor, but do not let the man know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking.
Also he said, Bring the
vail that thou hast
upon thee, and hold it. And when she held it, he measured six measures of barley, and laid it on her: and she went into the city.
And he told her, “Bring the
shawl you are wearing and hold it out.” When she did so, he
shoveled six measures of barley into her
shawl. Then he went into the city.
Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the hand of
Naomi, thou must
buy it also of
Ruth the
Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead
upon his inheritance.
Then Boaz said, “On the day you
buy the land from
Naomi and also from
Ruth the
Moabitess, you must also acquire the widow of the deceased in order to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance.”
Moreover
Ruth the
Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead
upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day.
Moreover, I have acquired
Ruth the
Moabitess, Mahlon’s widow, as my wife, to raise up the name of the deceased through his inheritance, so that his name will not disappear from among his brothers or from the gate of his home. You are witnesses
today.”
So
Hannah rose up after they had eaten in
Shiloh, and after they had
drunk. Now
Eli the priest sat
upon a seat by a post of the temple of the LORD.
So after they had finished eating and drinking in
Shiloh,
Hannah stood up. Now
Eli the priest was sitting on a chair by the
doorpost of the temple of the LORD.
And she
vowed a
vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou
wilt indeed look on the
affliction of thine
handmaid, and remember me, and not
forget thine
handmaid, but
wilt give unto thine
handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no
razor come
upon his head.
He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the
beggar from the
dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them
inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD’S, and he hath set the world
upon them.
He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the
needy from the ash
heap. He seats them among princes and bestows on them a throne of honor. For the foundations of the earth are the LORD’s, and
upon them He has set the world.
The
adversaries of the LORD shall be broken to pieces; out of heaven shall he
thunder upon them: the LORD shall judge the ends of the earth; and he shall give strength unto his king, and
exalt the horn of his
anointed.
Those who
oppose the LORD will be
shattered. He will
thunder from heaven against them. The LORD will judge the ends of the earth and will give power to His king. He will
exalt the horn of His
anointed.”
And did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to offer
upon mine altar, to burn incense, to wear an
ephod before me? and did I give unto the house of thy father all the offerings made by fire of the children of Israel?
And out of all the tribes of Israel I selected your father to be My priest, to offer sacrifices on My altar, to burn incense, and to wear an
ephod in My presence. I also gave to the house of your father all the offerings of the Israelites made by fire.
And this shall be a sign unto thee, that shall come
upon thy two sons, on
Hophni and
Phinehas; in one day they shall die both of them.
And this sign shall come to you concerning your two sons
Hophni and
Phinehas: They will both die on the same day.
And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to
Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth
upon his head.
That same day a
Benjamite ran from the battle line all the way to
Shiloh, with his clothes
torn and
dirt on his head.
And when he came, lo,
Eli sat
upon a seat by the
wayside watching: for his heart
trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city
cried out.
When he arrived, there was
Eli, sitting on his chair beside the road and watching, because his heart
trembled for the ark of God. When the man entered the city to give a report, the whole city
cried out.
And his daughter in law,
Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the
tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and
travailed; for her pains came
upon her.
Now
Eli’s daughter-in-law, the wife of
Phinehas, was
pregnant and about to give birth. When she heard the news of the capture of God’s ark and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband, she
collapsed and gave birth, for her labor pains overtook her.
And when they of
Ashdod arose early on the
morrow, behold,
Dagon was fallen
upon his face to the earth before the ark of the LORD. And they took
Dagon, and set him in his place again.
When the people of
Ashdod got up early the next morning, there was
Dagon, fallen on his face before the ark of the LORD. So they took
Dagon and returned him to his place.
And when they arose early on the
morrow morning, behold,
Dagon was fallen
upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the head of
Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off
upon the
threshold; only the
stump of
Dagon was left to him.
But when they got up early the next morning, there was
Dagon, fallen on his face before the ark of the LORD, with his head and his hands broken off and lying on the
threshold. Only the
torso remained.
But the hand of the LORD was heavy
upon them of
Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and
smote them with
emerods, even
Ashdod and the coasts thereof.
Now the hand of the LORD was heavy on the people of
Ashdod and its vicinity,
ravaging them and
afflicting them with tumors.
And when the men of
Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not
abide with us: for his hand is
sore upon us, and
upon Dagon our god.
And when the men of
Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, “The ark of the God of Israel must not stay here with us, because His hand is heavy
upon us and
upon our god
Dagon.”
So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it
slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.
Then the Ekronites assembled all the rulers of the Philistines and said, “Send away the ark of the God of Israel. It must return to its place, so that it will not kill us and our people!” For a deadly confusion had
pervaded the city; the hand of God was heavy
upon it.
And take the ark of the LORD, and lay it
upon the
cart; and put the jewels of gold, which ye return him for a
trespass offering, in a
coffer by the side thereof; and send it away, that it may go.
Take the ark of the LORD, set it on the
cart, and in a chest beside it put the gold objects you are sending Him as a guilt offering. Then send the ark on its way,
And they laid the ark of the LORD
upon the
cart, and the
coffer with the
mice of gold and the images of their
emerods.
Then they put the ark of the LORD on the
cart, along with the chest containing the gold rats and the images of the tumors.
And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but the LORD
thundered with a great
thunder on that day
upon the Philistines, and
discomfited them; and they were
smitten before Israel.
As the Philistines drew near to fight against Israel, Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering. But that day the LORD
thundered loudly against the Philistines and threw them into such confusion that they fled before Israel.
To
morrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt
anoint him to be captain over my people Israel, that he may save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked
upon my people, because their cry is come unto me.
“At this time
tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you are to
anoint him leader over My people Israel; he will save them from the hand of the Philistines. For I have looked
upon My people, because their cry has come to Me.”
And as for thine
asses that were lost three days ago, set not thy mind on them; for they are found. And on whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on thee, and on all thy father’s house?
As for the
donkeys you lost three days ago, do not
worry about them, for they have been found. And
upon whom is all the desire of Israel, if not
upon you and all your father’s house?”
And the
cook took up the shoulder, and that which was
upon it, and set it before Saul. And Samuel said, Behold that which is left! set it before thee, and eat: for unto this time hath it been kept for thee since I said, I have invited the people. So Saul did eat with Samuel that day.
So the
cook picked up the leg and what was attached to it and set it before Saul. Then Samuel said, “Here is what was kept back. It was set apart for you. Eat, for it has been kept for you for this occasion, from the time I said, ‘I have invited the people.’” So Saul
dined with Samuel that day.
And when they were come down from the high place into the city, Samuel communed with Saul upon the top of the house.
And after they had come down from the high place into the city, Samuel spoke with Saul on the roof of his house.
Then Samuel took a
vial of oil, and poured it
upon his head, and
kissed him, and said, Is it not because the LORD hath
anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?
Then Samuel took a
flask of oil, poured it on Saul’s head,
kissed him, and said, “Has not the LORD
anointed you ruler over His inheritance?
And the Spirit of the LORD will come
upon thee, and thou shalt
prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.
Then the Spirit of the LORD will
rush upon you, and you will
prophesy with them; and you will be transformed into a different person.
And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came
upon him, and he
prophesied among them.
When Saul and his servant arrived at Gibeah, a group of prophets met him. Then the Spirit of God
rushed upon him, and he
prophesied along with them.
And Nahash the
Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach
upon all Israel.
But Nahash the
Ammonite replied, “I will make a treaty with you on one condition, that I may put out
everyone’s right eye and bring reproach
upon all Israel.”
And the Spirit of God came
upon Saul when he heard those
tidings, and his anger was
kindled greatly.
When Saul heard their words, the Spirit of God
rushed upon him, and he burned with great anger.
And he took a yoke of oxen, and
hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying,
Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.
He took a pair of oxen, cut them into pieces, and sent them by messengers throughout the land of Israel,
proclaiming, “This is what will be done to the oxen of
anyone who does not march behind Saul and Samuel.” Then the terror of the LORD fell
upon the people, and they turned out as one man.
Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now
upon me to
Gilgal, and I have not made
supplication unto the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering.
I thought, ‘Now the Philistines will descend
upon me at
Gilgal, and I have not sought the favor of the LORD.’ So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering.”
And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done
foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom
upon Israel for ever.
“You have acted
foolishly,” Samuel declared. “You have not kept the command that the LORD your God gave you; if you had, the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time.
Now it came to pass
upon a day, that
Jonathan the son of Saul said unto the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over to the Philistines’ garrison, that is on the other side. But he told not his father.
One day
Jonathan son of Saul said to the young man bearing his
armor, “Come, let us cross over to the
Philistine outpost on the other side.” But
Jonathan did not tell his father.
And
Jonathan climbed up
upon his hands and
upon his feet, and his armourbearer after him: and they fell before
Jonathan; and his armourbearer
slew after him.
So
Jonathan climbed up on his hands and feet, with his
armor-bearer behind him. And the Philistines fell before
Jonathan, and his
armor-bearer followed and finished them off.
And all they of the land came to a wood; and there was honey upon the ground.
Then all the troops entered the forest, and there was honey on the ground.
And the people
flew upon the
spoil, and took sheep, and oxen, and
calves, and
slew them on the ground: and the people did eat them with the blood.
So they
rushed greedily to the
plunder, taking sheep, cattle, and
calves. They slaughtered them on the ground and
ate meat with the blood still in it.
Wherefore then
didst thou not obey the voice of the LORD, but
didst fly
upon the
spoil, and
didst evil in the sight of the LORD?
So why did you not obey the LORD? Why did you
rush upon the
plunder and do evil in the sight of the LORD?”
And as Samuel turned about to go away, he laid hold
upon the
skirt of his
mantle, and it rent.
Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and
anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came
upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to
Ramah.
So Samuel took the horn of oil and
anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and the Spirit of the LORD
rushed upon David from that day forward. Then Samuel set out and went to
Ramah.
Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a
cunning player on an
harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is
upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.
Let our lord command your servants here to seek out someone who can
skillfully play the
harp. Whenever the spirit of distress from God is
upon you, he is to play it, and you will be well.”
And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was
upon Saul, that David took an
harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
And whenever the spirit from God came
upon Saul, David would
pick up his
harp and play, and Saul would become well, and the spirit of distress would depart from him.
And he had an
helmet of brass
upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of
mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass.
and he had a bronze
helmet on his head. He
wore a bronze coat of
mail weighing five thousand shekels,
And he had
greaves of brass
upon his legs, and a
target of brass between his shoulders.
and he had
armor of bronze on his legs and a
javelin of bronze
slung between his shoulders.
And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an
helmet of brass
upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of
mail.
Then Saul clothed David in his own
tunic, put a bronze
helmet on his head, and dressed him in
armor.
And David
girded his sword
upon his armour, and he
assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.
David
strapped his sword over the
tunic and tried to walk, but he was not accustomed to them. “I cannot walk in these,” David said to Saul. “I am not accustomed to them.” So David took them off.
Therefore David ran, and stood
upon the
Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the
sheath thereof, and
slew him, and cut off his head
therewith. And when the Philistines saw their
champion was dead, they fled.
David ran and stood over him. He
grabbed the
Philistine’s sword and pulled it from its
sheath and killed him; and he cut off his head with the sword. When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran.
And
Jonathan stripped himself of the
robe that was
upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his
girdle.
And
Jonathan removed the
robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his
tunic, his sword, his bow, and his belt.
And it came to pass on the
morrow, that the evil spirit from God came
upon Saul, and he
prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a
javelin in Saul’s hand.
The next day a spirit of distress sent from God came
upon Saul, and he
prophesied inside the house while David played the
harp as usual. Now Saul was holding a
spear,
And Saul said to David, Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give thee to wife: only be thou
valiant for me, and fight the LORD’S battles. For Saul said, Let not mine hand be
upon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be
upon him.
Then Saul said to David, “Here is my older daughter Merab. I will give her to you in marriage. Only be
valiant for me and fight the LORD’s battles.” But Saul was thinking, “I need not raise my hand against him; let the hand of the Philistines be against him.”
And the evil spirit from the LORD was
upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his
javelin in his hand: and David played with his hand.
But as Saul was sitting in his house with his
spear in his hand, a spirit of distress from the LORD came
upon him. While David was playing the
harp,
And Saul sent messengers to take David: and when they saw the company of the prophets
prophesying, and Samuel standing as appointed over them, the Spirit of God was
upon the messengers of Saul, and they also
prophesied.
he sent messengers to capture him. But when they saw the group of prophets
prophesying, with Samuel leading them, the Spirit of God came
upon them, and Saul’s messengers also began to
prophesy.
And he went thither to Naioth in
Ramah: and the Spirit of God was
upon him also, and he went on, and
prophesied, until he came to Naioth in
Ramah.
So Saul went to Naioth in
Ramah. But the Spirit of God came
upon even Saul, and he walked along
prophesying until he came to Naioth in
Ramah.
And
Jonathan said, Far be it from thee: for if I knew certainly that evil were determined by my father to come
upon thee, then would not I tell it thee?
“Never!”
Jonathan replied. “If I ever found out that my father had evil intentions against you, would I not tell you?”
And the king sat
upon his seat, as at other times, even
upon a seat by the wall: and
Jonathan arose, and
Abner sat by Saul’s side, and David’s place was empty.
He sat in his usual place by the wall, opposite
Jonathan and beside
Abner, but David’s place was empty.
For as long as the son of
Jesse liveth
upon the ground, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send and
fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die.
For as long as the son of
Jesse lives on this earth, neither you nor your
kingship shall be established. Now send for him and bring him to me, for he must surely die!”
And he changed his behaviour before them, and
feigned himself
mad in their hands, and
scrabbled on the doors of the gate, and let his
spittle fall down
upon his
beard.
And the king said unto the
footmen that stood about him, Turn, and
slay the priests of the LORD; because their hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled, and did not
shew it to me. But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall
upon the priests of the LORD.
Then the king ordered the guards at his side, “Turn and kill the priests of the LORD, because they too sided with David. For they knew he was
fleeing, but they did not tell me.” But the king’s servants would not lift a hand to strike the priests of the LORD.
And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall
upon the priests. And Doeg the
Edomite turned, and he fell
upon the priests, and
slew on that day
fourscore and five persons that did wear a linen
ephod.
So the king ordered Doeg, “You turn and strike down the priests!” And Doeg the
Edomite turned and struck down the priests himself. On that day he killed eighty-five men who
wore the linen
ephod.
Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats.
So Saul took three thousand chosen men from all Israel and went to look for David and his men in the region of the Rocks of the Wild Goats.
The LORD judge between me and thee, and the LORD
avenge me of thee: but mine hand shall not be
upon thee.
May the LORD judge between you and me, and may the LORD take
vengeance on you, but my hand will never be against you.
As saith the
proverb of the ancients, Wickedness proceedeth from the wicked: but mine hand shall not be
upon thee.
As the old
proverb says, ‘Wickedness proceeds from the wicked.’ But my hand will never be against you.
And fell at his feet, and said,
Upon me, my lord,
upon me let this iniquity be: and let thine
handmaid, I pray thee, speak in thine
audience, and hear the words of thine
handmaid.
She fell at his feet and said, “My lord, may the
blame be on me alone, but please let your servant speak to you; hear the words of your servant.
And when David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be the LORD, that hath
pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and hath kept his servant from evil: for the LORD hath returned the wickedness of Nabal
upon his own head. And David sent and communed with
Abigail, to take her to him to wife.
On hearing that Nabal was dead, David said, “Blessed be the LORD, who has
upheld my cause against the reproach of Nabal and has restrained His servant from evil. For the LORD has brought the wickedness of Nabal down
upon his own head.” Then David sent word to
Abigail, asking for her in marriage.
And
Abigail hasted, and arose, and
rode upon an
ass, with five damsels of hers that went after her; and she went after the messengers of David, and became his wife.
So
Abigail hurried and got on a
donkey, and attended by five of her maidens, she followed David’s messengers and became his wife.
So David took the
spear and the
cruse of water from Saul’s
bolster; and they
gat them away, and no man saw it, nor knew it, neither
awaked: for they were all
asleep; because a deep sleep from the LORD was fallen
upon them.
So David took the
spear and water
jug by Saul’s head, and they departed. No one saw them or knew about it, nor did
anyone wake up; they all remained
asleep, because a deep sleep from the LORD had fallen on them.
And Saul
sware to her by the LORD, saying, As the LORD liveth, there shall no punishment happen to thee for this thing.
Then Saul
swore to her by the LORD: “As surely as the LORD lives, no punishment shall come
upon you for this.”
