But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day’s journey; and they sought him among their
kinsfolk and acquaintance.
Assuming He was in their company, they traveled on for a day before they began to look for Him among their relatives and friends.
And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.
But they did not understand the statement He was making to them.
And he went down with them, and came to
Nazareth, and
was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.
Now when all the people were
baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being
baptized, and praying, the heaven
was opened,
When all the people were being
baptized, Jesus
was baptized too. And as He
was praying, heaven
was opened,

And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
Being forty days
tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward
hungered.
where for forty days He
was tempted by the devil. He
ate nothing during those days, and when they had ended, He
was hungry.
And he taught in their synagogues, being
glorified of all.
And he came to
Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom
was, he went into the
synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.
Then Jesus came to
Nazareth, where He had been brought up. As
was His custom, He entered the
synagogue on the Sabbath. And when He stood up to read,
And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,
the
scroll of the prophet Isaiah
was handed to Him. Unrolling it, He found the place where it
was written:
But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land;
But I tell you truthfully that there were many widows in Israel in the time of
Elijah, when the sky
was shut for three and a half years and great famine swept over all the land.
But unto none of them
was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of
Sidon, unto a woman that
was a widow.
Yet
Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to the widow of Zarephath in
Sidon.
And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them
was cleansed, saving
Naaman the
Syrian.
And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the
brow of the hill
whereon their city
was built, that they might cast him down
headlong.
They got up, drove Him out of the town, and led Him to the
brow of the hill on which the town
was built, in order to throw Him over the
cliff.
And they were
astonished at his doctrine: for his word
was with power.
They were
astonished at His teaching, because His message had authority.
And in the
synagogue there
was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and
cried out with a loud voice,
In the
synagogue there
was a man possessed by the spirit of an unclean
demon. He
cried out in a loud voice,
And he arose out of the
synagogue, and entered into Simon’s house. And Simon’s wife’s mother
was taken with a great fever; and they
besought him for her.
After Jesus had left the
synagogue, He went to the home of Simon, whose mother-in-law
was suffering from a high fever. So they appealed to Jesus on her behalf,
Now when the sun
was setting, all they that had any sick with
divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and
healed them.
At
sunset, all who were ill with various diseases were brought to Jesus, and laying His hands on each one, He
healed them.
And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he
rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he
was Christ.
Demons also came out of many people,
shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But He
rebuked the demons and would not allow them to speak, because they knew He
was the Christ.
And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them.
At
daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place, and the crowds were looking for Him. They came to Him and tried to keep Him from leaving.
And he said unto them, I must
preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.
But Jesus told them, “I must
preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well, because that is why I
was sent.”
And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret,
On one occasion, while Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret with the crowd pressing in on Him to hear the word of God,
And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the
fishermen were gone out of them, and were
washing their nets.
He saw two boats at the edge of the lake. The
fishermen had left them and were
washing their nets.
And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon’s, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.
Jesus got into the boat belonging to Simon and asked him to put out a little from shore. And sitting down, He taught the people from the boat.
For he
was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken:
For he and his companions were
astonished at the catch of fish they had taken,
And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.
and so were his partners James and John, the sons of Zebedee. “Do not be afraid,” Jesus said to Simon. “From now on you will catch men.”
And it came to pass, when he
was in a certain city, behold a man full of
leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and
besought him, saying, Lord, if thou
wilt, thou canst make me clean.
While Jesus
was in one of the towns, a man came along who
was covered with
leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he fell facedown and
begged Him, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”
And it came to pass on a certain day, as he
was teaching, that there were
Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of
Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord
was present to
heal them.
One day Jesus
was teaching, and the
Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there. People had come from Jerusalem and from every village of
Galilee and
Judea, and the power of the Lord
was present for Him to
heal the sick.
And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which
was taken with a
palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him.
Just then some men came carrying a
paralyzed man on a mat. They tried to bring him inside to set him before Jesus,
And they were all
amazed, and they
glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day.
And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them.
Then Levi hosted a great
banquet for Jesus at his house. A large crowd of tax collectors
was there, along with others who were eating with them.
And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old.
He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and sews it on an old one. If he does, he will
tear the new garment as well, and the
patch from the new will not
match the old.
And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples
plucked the ears of corn, and did eat,
rubbing them in their hands.
One Sabbath Jesus
was passing through the grainfields, and His disciples began to
pick the heads of grain,
rub them in their hands, and eat them.
And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when himself
was an
hungred, and they which were with him;
Jesus replied, “Have you not read what David did when he and his companions were
hungry?
And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the
synagogue and taught: and there
was a man whose right hand
was withered.
On another Sabbath Jesus entered the
synagogue and
was teaching, and a man
was there whose right hand
was withered.
And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other.
And after looking around at all of them, He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and it was restored.
And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;
When
daylight came, He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also designated as apostles:
And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and
Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be
healed of their diseases;
Then Jesus came down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of His disciples
was there, along with a great number of people from all over
Judea, Jerusalem, and the sea coast of Tyre and
Sidon.
And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and
healed them all.
The entire crowd
was trying to touch Him, because power
was coming from Him and
healing them all.
He is like a man which built an house, and
digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat
vehemently upon that house, and could not
shake it: for it
was founded upon a rock.
He is like a man building a house, who
dug down deep and laid his foundation on the rock. When the flood came, the
torrent crashed against that house but could not
shake it, because it
was well built.
But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat
vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house
was great.
But the one who hears My words and does not act on them is like a man who built his house on ground without a foundation. The
torrent crashed against that house, and immediately it fell—and great
was its destruction!”
And a certain
centurion’s servant, who
was dear unto him,
was sick, and ready to die.
There a highly valued servant of a
centurion was sick and about to die.
And when they came to Jesus, they
besought him instantly, saying, That he
was worthy for whom he should do this:
They came to Jesus and
pleaded with Him earnestly, “This man is worthy to have You grant this,
Then Jesus went with them. And when he
was now not far from the house, the
centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not
thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof:
So Jesus went with them. But when He
was not far from the house, the
centurion sent friends with the message: “Lord, do not trouble
Yourself, for I am not worthy to have You come under my roof.
Now when he came
nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there
was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she
was a widow: and much people of the city
was with her.
As He approached the town gate, He saw a dead man being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her.
And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.
And the dead man sat up and began to speak! Then Jesus gave him back to his mother.
And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?
So John called two of his disciples and sent them to ask the Lord, “Are You the One who was to come, or should we look for someone else?”
When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?
When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to ask, ‘Are You the One who was to come, or should we look for someone else?’”
And stood at his feet behind him
weeping, and began to
wash his feet with tears, and did
wipe them with the hairs of her head, and
kissed his feet, and
anointed them with the
ointment.
As she stood behind Him at His feet
weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears and
wipe them with her hair. Then she
kissed His feet and
anointed them with the
perfume.
There
was a certain
creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred
pence, and the other fifty.
“Two men were debtors to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred
denarii, and the other fifty.
Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he
forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.
“I suppose the one who
was forgiven more,” Simon replied. “You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.
And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath
washed my feet with tears, and
wiped them with the hairs of her head.
And turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? When I entered your house, you did not give Me water for My feet, but she wet My feet with her tears and
wiped them with her hair.
And when much people were gathered together, and were come to him out of every city, he spake by a parable:
While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town, He told them this parable:
A
sower went out to
sow his seed: and as he
sowed, some fell by the way side; and it
was trodden down, and the fowls of the air
devoured it.
“A farmer went out to
sow his seed. And as he
was sowing, some seed fell along the path, where it
was trampled, and the birds of the air
devoured it.
And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it
was sprung up, it
withered away, because it lacked moisture.
Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up, the seedlings
withered because they had no moisture.
And it was told him by certain which said, Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee.
He was told, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see You.”
But as they sailed he fell
asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filled with water, and were in
jeopardy.
As they sailed, He fell
asleep, and a
windstorm came down on the lake, so that the boat
was being
swamped, and they were in great danger.
And they came to him, and
awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and
rebuked the wind and the
raging of the water: and they ceased, and there
was a calm.
The disciples went and
woke Him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” Then Jesus got up and
rebuked the wind and the
raging waters, and they
subsided, and all
was calm.
And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs.
When Jesus
stepped ashore, He
was met by a
demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothing or lived in a house, but he stayed in the tombs.
(For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For
oftentimes it had caught him: and he
was kept bound with chains and in
fetters; and he
brake the bands, and
was driven of the devil into the wilderness.)
For Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he
was bound with chains and
shackles, he had broken the chains and been driven by the
demon into solitary places.
And there
was there an
herd of many
swine feeding on the mountain: and they
besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them.
There on the
hillside a large
herd of pigs
was feeding. So the demons
begged Jesus to let them enter the pigs, and He gave them permission.
Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the
swine: and the
herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were
choked.
Then the demons came out of the man and went into the pigs, and the
herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and
was drowned.
When they that fed them saw what was done, they fled, and went and told it in the city and in the country.
When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and
countryside.
Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.
So the people went out to see what had happened. They came to Jesus and found the man whom the demons had left, sitting at Jesus’ feet, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
They also which saw it told them by what means he that
was possessed of the devils
was healed.
Meanwhile, those who had seen it reported how the
demon-possessed man had been
healed.
And it came to pass, that, when Jesus
was returned, the people
gladly received him: for they were all waiting for him.
When Jesus returned, the crowd
welcomed Him, for they had all been waiting for Him.
And, behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he
was a ruler of the
synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus’ feet, and
besought him that he would come into his house:
Just then a
synagogue leader named Jairus came and fell at Jesus’ feet. He
begged Him to come to his house,
For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying. But as he went the people
thronged him.
because his only daughter, who was about twelve, was dying. As Jesus went with him, the crowds pressed around Him,
And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be
healed of any,
including a woman who had suffered from
bleeding for twelve years. She had spent all her money on physicians, but no one
was able to
heal her.
And when the woman saw that she
was not
hid, she came
trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him and how she
was healed immediately.
Then the woman, seeing that she could not escape notice, came
trembling and fell down before Him. In the presence of all the people, she explained why she had touched Him and how she had immediately been
healed.
While he yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the
synagogue’s house, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Master.
While He
was still speaking, someone arrived from the house of the
synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” he told Jairus. “Do not bother the Teacher anymore.”
And all
wept, and
bewailed her: but he said,
Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth.
And they
laughed at Him, knowing that she
was dead.
And her parents were
astonished: but he charged them that they should tell no man what
was done.
Her parents were
astounded, but Jesus ordered them not to tell
anyone what had happened.
Now Herod the
tetrarch heard of all that
was done by him: and he
was perplexed, because that it
was said of some, that John
was risen from the dead;
When Herod the
tetrarch heard about all that
was happening, he
was perplexed. For some were saying that John had risen from the dead,
And of some, that Elias had appeared; and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again.
others that
Elijah had appeared, and still others that a prophet of old had arisen.
And they did so, and made them all sit down.
And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets.
They all
ate and were satisfied, and the disciples
picked up twelve
basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am?
One day as Jesus was praying in private and the disciples were with Him, He questioned them: “Who do the crowds say I am?”
And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance
was altered, and his
raiment was white and
glistering.
And as He
was praying, the appearance of His face changed, and His clothes became
radiantly white.
Who appeared in glory, and spake of his
decease which he should
accomplish at Jerusalem.
They appeared in glory and spoke about His departure, which He
was about to
accomplish at Jerusalem.
And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.
As Moses and
Elijah were leaving, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for You, one for Moses, and one for
Elijah.” (He did not know what he
was saying.)
