And it came to pass, while Saul talked unto the priest, that the noise that was in the host of the Philistines went on and increased: and Saul said unto the priest, Withdraw thine hand.
While Saul was talking to the priest, the
commotion in the
Philistine camp continued to increase. So Saul said to the priest, “Withdraw your hand.”
Moreover the Hebrews that were with the Philistines before that time, which
went up with them into the camp from the country round about, even they also turned to be with the Israelites that were with Saul and
Jonathan.
And the Hebrews who had previously gone up into the surrounding camps of the Philistines now
went over to the Israelites who were with Saul and
Jonathan.
Then Saul went up from following the Philistines: and the Philistines went to their own place.
Then Saul gave up his pursuit of the Philistines, and the Philistines returned to their own land.
And Saul said unto Samuel,
Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought
Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the
Amalekites.
“But I did obey the LORD,” Saul replied. “I
went on the mission that the LORD gave me. I brought back
Agag king of Amalek and devoted the
Amalekites to destruction.
So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshipped the LORD.
So Samuel went back with Saul, and Saul worshiped the LORD.
Then Samuel
went to
Ramah; and Saul
went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul.
Then Samuel
went to
Ramah, but Saul
went up to his home in Gibeah of Saul.
And Samuel did that which the LORD spake, and came to
Bethlehem. And the elders of the town
trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou
peaceably?
So Samuel did what the LORD had said and
went to
Bethlehem. When the elders of the town met him, they
trembled and asked, “Do you come in peace?”
Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and
anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and
went to
Ramah.
So Samuel took the horn of oil and
anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and the Spirit of the LORD
rushed upon David from that day forward. Then Samuel set out and
went to
Ramah.
And there
went out a
champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named
Goliath, of
Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.
And the staff of his
spear was like a
weaver’s beam; and his
spear’s head
weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield
went before him.
The shaft of his
spear was like a
weaver’s beam, and its iron point
weighed six hundred shekels. In addition, his shield bearer
went before him.
Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehemjudah, whose name was
Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man
went among men for an old man in the days of Saul.
Now David was the son of a man named
Jesse, an Ephrathite from
Bethlehem of Judah who had eight sons in the days of Saul. And
Jesse was old and well along in years.
And the three eldest sons of
Jesse went and followed Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons that
went to the battle were Eliab the first born, and next unto him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.
The three older sons of
Jesse had followed Saul into battle: The
firstborn was Eliab, the second was Abinadab, and the third was Shammah.
But David
went and returned from Saul to feed his father’s sheep at
Bethlehem.
but David
went back and forth from Saul to tend his father’s sheep in
Bethlehem.
And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and
went, as
Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the
trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and
shouted for the battle.
So David got up early in the morning, left the flock with a keeper, loaded up, and set out as
Jesse had
instructed him. He reached the camp as the army was marching out to its position and
shouting the battle cry.
And I
went out after him, and
smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his
beard, and
smote him, and
slew him.
I
went after it, struck it down, and delivered the lamb from its mouth. If it reared up against me, I would
grab it by its fur, strike it down, and kill it.
And the
Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield
went before him.
Now the
Philistine came closer and closer to David, with his shield-bearer before him.
And David
went out
whithersoever Saul sent him, and
behaved himself wisely: and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul’s servants.
So David marched out and
prospered in everything Saul sent him to do, and Saul set him over the men of war. And this was pleasing in the sight of all the people, and of Saul’s officers as well.
Therefore Saul removed him from him, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.
Therefore Saul sent David away and gave him command of a thousand men. David led the troops out to battle and back,
But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he went out and came in before them.
But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he was leading them out to battle and back.
Wherefore David arose and
went, he and his men, and
slew of the Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be the king’s son in law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife.
David and his men went out and killed two hundred Philistines. He brought their foreskins and presented them as payment in full to become the king’s son-in-law. Then Saul gave his daughter Michal to David in marriage.
Then the princes of the Philistines
went forth: and it came to pass, after they
went forth, that David
behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.
Every time the
Philistine commanders came out for battle, David was more successful than all of Saul’s officers, so that his name was highly esteemed.
And there was war again: and David
went out, and fought with the Philistines, and
slew them with a great slaughter; and they fled from him.
When war broke out again, David went out and fought the Philistines and struck them with such a mighty blow that they fled before him.
So Michal let David down through a window: and he went, and fled, and escaped.
So Michal lowered David from the window, and he ran away and escaped.
So David fled, and escaped, and came to Samuel to
Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel
went and dwelt in Naioth.
So David ran away and escaped. And he
went to Samuel at
Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him. Then he and Samuel
went to Naioth and stayed there.
Then
went he also to
Ramah, and came to a great well that is in Sechu: and he asked and said, Where are Samuel and David? And one said, Behold, they be at Naioth in
Ramah.
Finally, Saul himself left for
Ramah and came to the large
cistern at Secu, where he asked, “Where are Samuel and David?” “At Naioth in
Ramah,” he was told.
And he
went thither to Naioth in
Ramah: and the Spirit of God was upon him also, and he
went on, and
prophesied, until he came to Naioth in
Ramah.
So Saul
went to Naioth in
Ramah. But the Spirit of God came upon even Saul, and he walked along
prophesying until he came to Naioth in
Ramah.
And
Jonathan said unto David, Come, and let us go out into the field. And they
went out both of them into the field.
“Come,” he replied, “let us go out to the field.” So the two of them went out into the field,
And it came to pass in the morning, that
Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little
lad with him.
In the morning
Jonathan went out to the field for the appointment with David, and a small boy was with him.
And
Jonathan said to David, Go in peace,
forasmuch as we have
sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever. And he arose and departed: and
Jonathan went into the city.
And
Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, for the two of us have
sworn in the name of the LORD, saying, ‘May the LORD be a witness between you and me, and between your descendants and mine
forever.’” Then David got up and departed, and
Jonathan went back into the city.
And David arose, and fled that day for fear of Saul, and
went to Achish the king of
Gath.
That day David fled from Saul and
went to Achish king of
Gath.
David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave
Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father’s house heard it, they
went down thither to him.
So David left
Gath and took refuge in the cave of
Adullam. When his brothers and the rest of his father’s household heard about it, they
went down to him there.
And David went thence to Mizpeh of Moab: and he said unto the king of Moab, Let my father and my mother, I pray thee, come forth, and be with you, till I know what God will do for me.
From there David went to Mizpeh of Moab, where he said to the king of Moab, “Please let my father and mother stay with you until I learn what God will do for me.”
And the prophet
Gad said unto David,
Abide not in the hold; depart, and get thee into the land of Judah. Then David departed, and came into the forest of Hareth.
Then the prophet
Gad said to David, “Do not stay in the
stronghold. Depart and go into the land of Judah.” So David left and
went to the forest of Hereth.
So David and his men
went to Keilah, and fought with the Philistines, and brought away their cattle, and
smote them with a great slaughter. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah.
Then David and his men
went to Keilah, fought against the Philistines, and carried off their
livestock, striking them with a mighty blow. So David saved the people of Keilah.
Then David and his men, which were about six hundred, arose and departed out of Keilah, and
went whithersoever they could go. And it was told Saul that David was escaped from Keilah; and he
forbare to go forth.
Then David and his men, about six hundred strong, set out and departed from Keilah, moving from place to place. When Saul was told that David had escaped from Keilah, he declined to go forth.
And
Jonathan Saul’s son arose, and
went to David into the wood, and strengthened his hand in God.
And Saul’s son
Jonathan came to David in Horesh and strengthened his hand in God,
And they two made a covenant before the LORD: and David abode in the wood, and
Jonathan went to his house.
So the two of them made a covenant before the LORD. And David remained in Horesh, while
Jonathan went home.
And they arose, and went to Ziph before Saul: but David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon, in the plain on the south of Jeshimon.
So they set out and
went to Ziph
ahead of Saul. Now David and his men were in the Wilderness of Maon in the Arabah south of Jeshimon,
Saul also and his men went to seek him. And they told David: wherefore he came down into a rock, and abode in the wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard that, he pursued after David in the wilderness of Maon.
and Saul and his men went to seek him. When David was told about it, he went down to the rock and stayed in the Wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard of this, he pursued David there.
And Saul
went on this side of the mountain, and David and his men on that side of the mountain: and David made
haste to get away for fear of Saul; for Saul and his men compassed David and his men round about to take them.
Saul was proceeding along one side of the mountain, and David and his men along the other side. Even though David was
hurrying to get away, Saul and his men were closing in on David and his men to capture them.
Wherefore Saul returned from pursuing after David, and went against the Philistines: therefore they called that place Sela-hammahlekoth.
So Saul broke off his pursuit of David and went to meet the Philistines. That is why that place is called Sela-hammahlekoth.
And David went up from thence, and dwelt in strong holds at En-gedi.
And David went up from there and lived in the strongholds of En-gedi.
Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats.
So Saul took three thousand chosen men from all Israel and went to look for David and his men in the region of the Rocks of the Wild Goats.
And he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet: and David and his men remained in the sides of the cave.
Soon Saul came to the sheepfolds along the road, where there was a cave, and he
went in to
relieve himself. And David and his men were hiding in the recesses of the cave.
So David stayed his servants with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. But Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.
With these words David restrained his men, and he did not let them rise up against Saul. Then Saul left the cave and went on his way.
David also arose afterward, and
went out of the cave, and
cried after Saul, saying, My lord the king. And when Saul looked behind him, David
stooped with his face to the earth, and bowed himself.
After that, David got up, went out of the cave, and called out to Saul, “My lord the king!” When Saul looked behind him, David bowed facedown in reverence
And David
sware unto Saul. And Saul
went home; but David and his men
gat them up unto the hold.
So David gave his oath to Saul. Then Saul returned home, but David and his men
went up to the
stronghold.
And Samuel died; and all the Israelites were gathered together, and
lamented him, and buried him in his house at
Ramah. And David arose, and
went down to the wilderness of
Paran.
When Samuel died, all Israel gathered to
mourn for him; and they buried him at his home in
Ramah. Then David set out and
went down to the Wilderness of
Paran.
So David’s young men turned their way, and went again, and came and told him all those sayings.
So David’s men turned around and went back, and they relayed to him all these words.
And David said unto his men,
Gird ye on every man his sword. And they
girded on every man his sword; and David also
girded on his sword: and there
went up after David about four hundred men; and two hundred abode by the stuff.
And David said to his men, “
Strap on your swords!” So David and all his men put on their swords, and about four hundred men followed David, while two hundred stayed with the supplies.
But the men were very good unto us, and we were not
hurt, neither missed we any thing, as long as we were
conversant with them, when we were in the fields:
Yet these men were very good to us. When we were in the field, we were not
harassed, and nothing of ours
went missing the whole time we lived among them.
And
Abigail hasted, and arose, and
rode upon an
ass, with five damsels of hers that
went after her; and she
went after the messengers of David, and became his wife.
So
Abigail hurried and got on a
donkey, and attended by five of her maidens, she followed David’s messengers and became his wife.
Then Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.
So Saul, accompanied by three thousand chosen men of Israel, went down to the Wilderness of Ziph to search for David there.
And David arose, and came to the place where Saul had pitched: and David
beheld the place where Saul lay, and
Abner the son of
Ner, the captain of his host: and Saul lay in the
trench, and the people pitched round about him.
Then David set out and
went to the place where Saul had camped. He saw the place where Saul and
Abner son of
Ner, the general of his army, had
lain down. Saul was lying inside the inner circle of the camp, with the troops camped around him.
Then David
went over to the other side, and stood on the top of an hill
afar off; a great space being between them:
Then David crossed to the other side and stood
atop the mountain at a distance; there was a wide gulf between them.
Then Saul said to David, Blessed be thou, my son David: thou shalt both do great things, and also shalt still prevail. So David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place.
Saul said to him, “May you be blessed, David my son. You will
accomplish great things and will surely prevail.” So David
went on his way, and Saul returned home.
And David arose, and he passed over with the six hundred men that were with him unto Achish, the son of Maoch, king of
Gath.
So David set out with his six hundred men and
went to Achish son of Maoch, the king of
Gath.
And David and his men
went up, and invaded the Geshurites, and the Gezrites, and the
Amalekites: for those nations were of old the inhabitants of the land, as thou goest to Shur, even unto the land of Egypt.
Now David and his men
went up and
raided the Geshurites, the Girzites, and the
Amalekites. (From ancient times these people had inhabited the land extending to Shur and Egypt.)
And Saul
disguised himself, and put on other
raiment, and he
went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I pray thee, divine unto me by the familiar spirit, and bring me him up, whom I shall name unto thee.
So Saul
disguised himself by putting on different clothes, and he set out with two of his men. They came to the woman at night, and Saul said, “
Consult a spirit for me. Bring up for me the one I name.”
And she brought it before Saul, and before his servants; and they did eat. Then they rose up, and went away that night.
She served it to Saul and his servants, and they
ate. And that night they got up and left.
So David and his men rose up early to depart in the morning, to return into the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines
went up to
Jezreel.
So David and his men got up early in the morning to return to the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines
went up to
Jezreel.
And had taken the women
captives, that were therein: they
slew not any, either great or small, but carried them away, and
went on their way.
They had taken
captive the women and all who were there, both young and old. They had not killed
anyone, but had carried them off as they
went on their way.
So David
went, he and the six hundred men that were with him, and came to the
brook Besor, where those that were left behind stayed.
So David and his six hundred men
went to the
Brook of Besor, where some stayed behind
And David came to the two hundred men, which were so
faint that they could not follow David, whom they had made also to
abide at the
brook Besor: and they
went forth to meet David, and to meet the people that were with him: and when David came near to the people, he
saluted them.
When David came to the two hundred men who had been too exhausted to follow him from the
Brook of Besor, they came out to meet him and the troops with him. As David approached the men, he
greeted them,
Then answered all the wicked men and men of
Belial, of those that
went with David, and said, Because they
went not with us, we will not give them ought of the
spoil that we have recovered, save to every man his wife and his children, that they may lead them away, and depart.
but all the wicked and worthless men among those who had gone with David said, “Because they did not go with us, we will not share with them the
plunder we recovered, except for each man’s wife and children. They may take them and go.”
For who will
hearken unto you in this matter? but as his part is that goeth down to the battle, so shall his part be that tarrieth by the stuff: they shall part alike.
Who will
listen to your proposal? The share of the one who
went to battle will
match the share of the one who stayed with the supplies. They will share alike.”
And the battle
went sore against Saul, and the archers
hit him; and he was
sore wounded of the archers.
When the battle
intensified against Saul, the archers overtook him and wounded him critically.
All the
valiant men arose, and
went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan, and came to
Jabesh, and burnt them there.
all their men of
valor set out, journeyed all night, and
retrieved the bodies of Saul and his sons from the wall of Beth-shan. When they arrived at
Jabesh, they burned the bodies there.
And David said unto him, How
went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, That the people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and
Jonathan his son are dead also.
“What was the outcome?” David asked. “Please tell me.” “The troops fled from the battle,” he replied. “Many of them fell and died. And Saul and his son
Jonathan are also dead.”
So David
went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and
Abigail Nabal’s wife the
Carmelite.
So David
went there with his two wives, Ahinoam of
Jezreel and
Abigail the widow of Nabal of
Carmel.
And
Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David,
went out, and met together by the
pool of
Gibeon: and they sat down, the one on the one side of the
pool, and the other on the other side of the
pool.
So
Joab son of Zeruiah, along with the servants of David, marched out and met them by the
pool of
Gibeon. And the two camps took up positions on opposite sides of the
pool.
Then there arose and
went over by number twelve of Benjamin, which
pertained to
Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.
So they got up and were counted off—twelve for Benjamin and
Ish-bosheth son of Saul, and twelve for David.
Joab also and
Abishai pursued after
Abner: and the sun
went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, that lieth before Giah by the way of the wilderness of
Gibeon.
But
Joab and
Abishai pursued
Abner. By
sunset, they had gone as far as the hill of Ammah opposite Giah on the way to the wilderness of
Gibeon.
And
Abner and his men walked all that night through the plain, and passed over Jordan, and
went through all Bithron, and they came to
Mahanaim.
And all that night
Abner and his men marched through the Arabah. They crossed the Jordan, marched all morning, and arrived at
Mahanaim.
And they took up
Asahel, and buried him in the
sepulchre of his father, which was in
Bethlehem. And
Joab and his men
went all night, and they came to
Hebron at break of day.
And her husband
went with her along
weeping behind her to Bahurim. Then said
Abner unto him, Go, return. And he returned.
Her husband followed her,
weeping all the way to Bahurim. Then
Abner said to him, “Go back.” So he returned home.
And
Abner also spake in the ears of Benjamin: and
Abner went also to speak in the ears of David in
Hebron all that seemed good to Israel, and that seemed good to the whole house of Benjamin.
Abner also spoke to the Benjamites and
went to
Hebron to tell David all that seemed good to Israel and to the whole house of Benjamin.
And
Abner said unto David, I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel unto my lord the king, that they may make a league with thee, and that thou mayest reign over all that thine heart desireth. And David sent
Abner away; and he
went in peace.
Then
Abner said to David, “Let me go at once, and I will gather all Israel to my lord the king, that they may make a covenant with you, and that you may rule over all that your heart desires.” So David dismissed
Abner, and he
went in peace.
Then
Joab came to the king, and said, What hast thou done? behold,
Abner came unto thee; why is it that thou hast sent him away, and he is quite gone?
So
Joab went to the king and said, “What have you done? Look,
Abner came to you. Why did you dismiss him? Now he is getting away!
And the sons of
Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah,
went, and came about the heat of the day to the house of
Ish-bosheth, who lay on a bed at
noon.
Now Rechab and Baanah, the sons of
Rimmon the Beerothite, set out and arrived at the house of
Ish-bosheth in the heat of the day, while the king was taking his
midday nap.
And the king and his men
went to Jerusalem unto the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land: which spake unto David, saying, Except thou take away the blind and the
lame, thou shalt not come in
hither: thinking, David cannot come in
hither.
Now the king and his men marched to Jerusalem against the Jebusites who inhabited the land. The Jebusites said to David: “You will never get in here. Even the blind and
lame can
repel you.” For they thought, “David cannot get in here.”
And David went on, and grew great, and the LORD God of hosts was with him.
And David became greater and greater, for the LORD God of Hosts was with him.
But when the Philistines heard that they had
anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines came up to seek David; and David heard of it, and
went down to the hold.
When the Philistines heard that David had been
anointed king over Israel, they all
went in search of him; but David learned of this and
went down to the
stronghold.
And David came to
Baal-perazim, and David
smote them there, and said, The LORD hath broken forth upon mine enemies before me, as the breach of waters. Therefore he called the name of that place
Baal-perazim.
So David
went to
Baal-perazim, where he defeated the Philistines and said, “Like a
bursting flood, the LORD has
burst out against my enemies before me.” So he called that place
Baal-perazim.
And David arose, and went with all the people that were with him from Baale of Judah, to bring up from thence the ark of God, whose name is called by the name of the LORD of hosts that dwelleth between the cherubims.
And he and all his troops set out for Baale of Judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the Name— the name of the LORD of Hosts, who is enthroned between the
cherubim that are on it.
And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab which was at Gibeah, accompanying the ark of God: and Ahio went before the ark.
bringing with it the ark of God. And Ahio was walking in front of the ark.
And it was told king David, saying, The LORD hath blessed the house of Obed-
edom, and all that pertaineth unto him, because of the ark of God. So David
went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-
edom into the city of David with
gladness.
Now it was reported to King David, “The LORD has blessed the house of Obed-
edom and all that belongs to him, because of the ark of God.” So David
went and had the ark of God brought up from the house of Obed-
edom into the City of David with
rejoicing.
And I was with thee
whithersoever thou
wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth.
I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make for you a name like the greatest in the land.
Then went king David in, and sat before the LORD, and he said, Who am I, O Lord GOD? and what is my house, that thou hast brought me hitherto?
Then King David went in, sat before the LORD, and said, “Who am I, O Lord GOD, and what is my house, that You have brought me this far?
And what one nation in the earth is like thy people, even like Israel, whom God
went to
redeem for a people to himself, and to make him a name, and to do for you great things and terrible, for thy land, before thy people, which thou redeemedst to thee from Egypt, from the nations and their gods?
And who is like Your people Israel—the one nation on earth whom God
went out to
redeem as a people for Himself and to make a name for Himself? You performed great and
awesome wonders by driving out nations and their gods from before Your people, whom You redeemed for
Yourself from Egypt.
David
smote also Hadadezer, the son of Rehob, king of Zobah, as he
went to recover his border at the river Euphrates.
David also defeated Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of Zobah, who had marched out to restore his dominion along the Euphrates River.
Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus: and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought gifts. And the LORD preserved David
whithersoever he
went.
Then he placed garrisons in
Aram of Damascus, and the Arameans became subject to David and brought him tribute. So the LORD made David victorious wherever he
went.
And he put garrisons in
Edom; throughout all
Edom put he garrisons, and all they of
Edom became David’s servants. And the LORD preserved David
whithersoever he
went.
He placed garrisons throughout
Edom, and all the Edomites were subject to David. So the LORD made David victorious wherever he
went.
And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the river: and they came to Helam; and Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.
Hadadezer sent messengers to bring more Arameans from beyond the Euphrates, and they came to Helam with Shobach the commander of Hadadezer’s army leading them.
And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and passed over Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in
array against David, and fought with him.
When this was reported to David, he gathered all Israel, crossed the Jordan, and
went to Helam. Then the Arameans
arrayed themselves against David and fought against him.
But Uriah
slept at the door of the king’s house with all the servants of his lord, and
went not down to his house.
But Uriah
slept at the door of the palace with all his master’s servants; he did not go down to his house.
And when they had told David, saying, Uriah
went not down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Camest thou not from thy journey? why then
didst thou not go down unto thine house?
And David was told, “Uriah did not go home.” “
Haven’t you just arrived from a journey?” David asked Uriah. “Why didn’t you go home?”
And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him
drunk: and at even he
went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but
went not down to his house.
Then David invited Uriah to eat and drink with him, and he got Uriah
drunk. And in the evening Uriah
went out to lie down on his
cot with his master’s servants, but he did not go home.
And the men of the city
went out, and fought with
Joab: and there fell some of the people of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.
And when the men of the city came out and fought against
Joab, some of David’s servants fell, and Uriah the Hittite also died.
