Who
smote Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? did not a woman cast a piece of a
millstone upon him from the wall, that he died in Thebez? why
went ye
nigh the wall? then say thou, Thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.
Who was the one to strike
Abimelech son of Jerubbesheth? Was it not a woman who dropped an upper
millstone on him from the wall, so that he died in Thebez? Why did you get so close to the wall?’ If so, then you are to say, ‘Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead as well.’”
So the
messenger went, and came and shewed David all that
Joab had sent him for.
So the
messenger set out and reported to David all that
Joab had sent him to say.
David therefore
besought God for the child; and David fasted, and
went in, and lay all night upon the earth.
David
pleaded with God for the boy. He fasted and
went into his house and spent the night lying in
sackcloth on the ground.
And the elders of his house arose, and went to him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them.
The elders of his household stood beside him to help him up from the ground, but he was unwilling and would not eat anything with them.
Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and
anointed himself, and changed his
apparel, and came into the house of the LORD, and worshipped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he did eat.
Then David got up from the ground, washed and
anointed himself, changed his clothes, and
went into the house of the LORD and worshiped. Then he
went to his own house, and at his request they set food before him, and he
ate.
And David comforted Bath-
sheba his wife, and
went in unto her, and lay with her: and she bare a son, and he called his name Solomon: and the LORD loved him.
Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba, and he went to her and lay with her. So she gave birth to a son, and they named him Solomon. Now the LORD loved the child
And David gathered all the people together, and went to Rabbah, and fought against it, and took it.
So David assembled all the troops and went to Rabbah; and he fought against it and captured it.
So Tamar
went to her brother Amnon’s house; and he was laid down. And she took flour, and
kneaded it, and made cakes in his sight, and did
bake the cakes.
So Tamar
went to the house of her brother Amnon, who was lying down. She took some
dough,
kneaded it, made cakes in his sight, and
baked them.
And she took a pan, and poured them out before him; but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, Have out all men from me. And they went out every man from him.
Then she brought the pan and set it down before him, but he refused to eat. “Send
everyone away!” said Amnon. And
everyone went out.
And Amnon said unto Tamar, Bring the meat into the chamber, that I may eat of thine hand. And Tamar took the cakes which she had made, and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother.
Then Amnon said to Tamar, “Bring the food into the
bedroom, so that I may eat it from your hand.” Tamar took the cakes she had made and
went to her brother Amnon’s
bedroom.
And Tamar put ashes on her head, and rent her garment of
divers colours that was on her, and laid her hand on her head, and
went on crying.
And Tamar put ashes on her head and
tore her
robe. And putting her hand on her head, she
went away crying bitterly.
And
Absalom came to the king, and said, Behold now, thy servant hath sheepshearers; let the king, I
beseech thee, and his servants go with thy servant.
And he
went to the king and said, “Your servant has just
hired shearers. Will the king and his servants please come with me?”
But
Absalom fled. And the young man that kept the watch lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came much people by the way of the hill side behind him.
Meanwhile,
Absalom had fled. When the young man standing watch looked up, he saw many people coming down the road west of him, along the side of the hill. And the
watchman went and reported to the king, “I see men coming from the direction of Horonaim, along the side of the hill.”
But
Absalom fled, and
went to Talmai, the son of Ammihud, king of Geshur. And David
mourned for his son every day.
Now
Absalom fled and
went to Talmai son of Ammihud, the king of Geshur. But David
mourned for his son every day.
So
Absalom fled, and
went to Geshur, and was there three years.
After
Absalom had fled and gone to Geshur, he stayed there three years.
And when the woman of Tekoah spake to the king, she fell on her face to the ground, and did
obeisance, and said, Help, O king.
When the woman from Tekoa
went to the king, she fell facedown in
homage and said, “Help me, O king!”
So
Joab arose and
went to Geshur, and brought
Absalom to Jerusalem.
So
Joab got up,
went to Geshur, and brought
Absalom to Jerusalem.
So
Joab came to the king, and told him: and when he had called for
Absalom, he came to the king, and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king: and the king
kissed Absalom.
So
Joab went and told the king, and David summoned
Absalom, who came to him and bowed facedown before him. Then the king
kissed Absalom.
And the king said unto him, Go in peace. So he arose, and
went to
Hebron.
“Go in peace,” said the king. So
Absalom got up and
went to
Hebron.
And with
Absalom went two hundred men out of Jerusalem, that were called; and they
went in their simplicity, and they knew not any thing.
Two hundred men from Jerusalem accompanied
Absalom. They had been invited as guests and they
went along innocently, for they knew nothing about the matter.
And the king went forth, and all his household after him. And the king left ten women, which were concubines, to keep the house.
Then the king set out, and his entire household followed him. But he left behind ten concubines to take care of the palace.
And the king
went forth, and all the people after him, and
tarried in a place that was far off.
So the king set out with all the people following him. He stopped at the last house,
And lo
Zadok also, and all the Levites were with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God: and they set down the ark of God; and
Abiathar went up, until all the people had done passing out of the city.
Zadok was also there, and all the Levites with him were carrying the ark of the covenant of God. And they set down the ark of God, and
Abiathar offered sacrifices until the people had passed out of the city.
And David
went up by the
ascent of mount Olivet, and
wept as he
went up, and had his head covered, and he
went barefoot: and all the people that was with him covered every man his head, and they
went up,
weeping as they
went up.
But David continued up the Mount of Olives,
weeping as he
went up. His head was covered, and he was walking
barefoot. And all the people with him covered their heads and
went up,
weeping as they
went.
And as David and his men
went by the way, Shimei
went along on the hill’s side over against him, and
cursed as he
went, and threw stones at him, and cast dust.
So David and his men proceeded along the road as Shimei
went along the ridge of the hill opposite him. As Shimei
went, he
yelled curses, threw stones, and
flung dust at David.
And it came to pass, when Hushai the Archite, David’s friend, was come unto
Absalom, that Hushai said unto
Absalom, God save the king, God save the king.
And David’s friend Hushai the Archite
went to
Absalom and said to him, “Long live the king! Long live the king!”
And
Absalom said to Hushai, Is this thy kindness to thy friend? why
wentest thou not with thy friend?
“Is this the
loyalty you show your friend?”
Absalom replied. “Why did you not go with your friend?”
So they spread
Absalom a tent upon the top of the house; and
Absalom went in unto his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel.
So they pitched a tent for
Absalom on the roof, and he
slept with his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel.
Now
Jonathan and
Ahimaaz stayed by En-rogel; for they might not be seen to come into the city: and a
wench went and told them; and they
went and told king David.
Now
Jonathan and
Ahimaaz were staying at En-rogel, where a servant
girl would come and pass along information to them. They in turn would go and inform King David, for they
dared not be seen entering the city.
Nevertheless a
lad saw them, and told
Absalom: but they
went both of them away quickly, and came to a man’s house in Bahurim, which had a well in his court;
whither they
went down.
But a young man did see them and told
Absalom. So the two left quickly and came to the house of a man in Bahurim. He had a well in his
courtyard, and they
climbed down into it.
And it came to pass, after they were departed, that they came up out of the well, and
went and told king David, and said unto David, Arise, and pass quickly over the water: for thus hath
Ahithophel counselled against you.
After the men had gone,
Ahimaaz and
Jonathan climbed up out of the well and
went to inform King David, saying, “Get up and cross over the river at once, for
Ahithophel has given this advice against you.”
Then David came to
Mahanaim. And
Absalom passed over Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him.
Then David
went to
Mahanaim, and
Absalom crossed the Jordan with all the men of Israel.
So the people went out into the field against Israel: and the battle was in the wood of Ephraim;
So David’s army marched into the field to
engage Israel in the battle, which took place in the forest of Ephraim.
And
Absalom met the servants of David. And
Absalom rode upon a
mule, and the
mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the
mule that was under him
went away.
Now
Absalom was riding on his
mule when he met the servants of David, and as the
mule went under the thick branches of a large oak,
Absalom’s head was caught fast in the tree. The
mule under him kept going, so that he was suspended in midair.
And David sat between the two gates: and the
watchman went up to the roof over the gate unto the wall, and lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold a man running alone.
Now David was sitting between the two gates when the
watchman went up to the roof of the
gateway by the wall, looked out, and saw a man running alone.
And the king was much moved, and
went up to the chamber over the gate, and
wept: and as he
went, thus he said, O my son
Absalom, my son, my son
Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O
Absalom, my son, my son!
The king was
shaken and
went up to the gate chamber and
wept. And as he walked, he
cried out, “O my son
Absalom! My son, my son
Absalom! If only I had died instead of you, O
Absalom, my son, my son!”
And
Joab came into the house to the king, and said, Thou hast shamed this day the faces of all thy servants, which this day have saved thy life, and the lives of thy sons and of thy daughters, and the lives of thy wives, and the lives of thy concubines;
Then
Joab went into the house and said to the king, “
Today you have disgraced all your servants who have saved your life and the lives of your sons and daughters, of your wives, and of your concubines.
And there were a thousand men of Benjamin with him, and Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him; and they went over Jordan before the king.
along with a thousand men of Benjamin, as well as Ziba the
steward of the house of Saul and his fifteen sons and twenty servants. They
rushed down to the Jordan before the king
And there
went over a
ferry boat to carry over the king’s household, and to do what he thought good. And Shimei the son of
Gera fell down before the king, as he was come over Jordan;
and crossed at the
ford to carry over the king’s household and to do what was good in his sight. When Shimei son of
Gera crossed the Jordan, he fell down before the king
And said unto the king, Let not my lord
impute iniquity unto me, neither do thou remember that which thy servant did
perversely the day that my lord the king
went out of Jerusalem, that the king should take it to his heart.
and said, “My lord, do not hold me guilty, and do not remember your servant’s
wrongdoing on the day my lord the king left Jerusalem. May the king not take it to heart.
And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king, and had neither dressed his feet, nor
trimmed his
beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came again in peace.
Then Mephibosheth, Saul’s grandson,
went down to meet the king. He had not cared for his feet or
trimmed his
mustache or washed his clothes from the day the king had left until the day he returned safely.
And it came to pass, when he was come to Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said unto him, Wherefore wentest not thou with me, Mephibosheth?
And he came from Jerusalem to meet the king, who asked him, “Mephibosheth, why did you not go with me?”
And Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim, and went over Jordan with the king, to conduct him over Jordan.
Now Barzillai the Gileadite had come down from Rogelim to cross the Jordan with the king and send him on his way from there.
And all the people
went over Jordan. And when the king was come over, the king
kissed Barzillai, and blessed him; and he returned unto his own place.
So all the people crossed the Jordan, and then the king crossed over. The king
kissed Barzillai and blessed him, and Barzillai returned home.
Then the king
went on to
Gilgal, and Chimham
went on with him: and all the people of Judah conducted the king, and also half the people of Israel.
Then the king
went on to
Gilgal, and Chimham crossed over with him. All the troops of Judah and half the troops of Israel
escorted the king.
So every man of Israel
went up from after David, and followed
Sheba the son of Bichri: but the men of Judah
clave unto their king, from Jordan even to Jerusalem.
So all the men of Israel deserted David to follow
Sheba son of Bichri. But the men of Judah stayed by their king all the way from the Jordan to Jerusalem.
And David came to his house at Jerusalem; and the king took the ten women his concubines, whom he had left to keep the house, and put them in ward, and fed them, but
went not in unto them. So they were shut up unto the day of their death, living in
widowhood.
When David returned to his palace in Jerusalem, he took the ten concubines he had left to care for the palace, and he placed them in a house under guard. He provided for them, but he no longer
slept with them. They were confined until the day of their death, living as widows.
So
Amasa went to
assemble the men of Judah: but he
tarried longer than the set time which he had appointed him.
And there
went out after him
Joab’s men, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, and all the mighty men: and they
went out of Jerusalem, to pursue after
Sheba the son of Bichri.
So
Joab’s men, along with the Cherethites, the Pelethites, and all the mighty men, marched out of Jerusalem in pursuit of
Sheba son of Bichri.
When they were at the great stone which is in
Gibeon,
Amasa went before them. And
Joab’s garment that he had put on was
girded unto him, and upon it a
girdle with a sword fastened upon his loins in the
sheath thereof; and as he
went forth it fell out.
When he was removed out of the
highway, all the people
went on after
Joab, to pursue after
Sheba the son of Bichri.
As soon as
Amasa’s body was removed from the road, all the men
went on with
Joab to pursue
Sheba son of Bichri.
And he
went through all the tribes of Israel unto
Abel, and to Beth-maachah, and all the Berites: and they were gathered together, and
went also after him.
Sheba passed through all the tribes of Israel to
Abel-beth-
maacah and through the entire region of the Berites, who gathered together and followed him.
Then the woman
went unto all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of
Sheba the son of Bichri, and cast it out to
Joab. And he
blew a
trumpet, and they retired from the city, every man to his tent. And
Joab returned to Jerusalem unto the king.
Then the woman
went to all the people with her wise counsel, and they cut off the head of
Sheba son of Bichri and threw it to
Joab. So he
blew the ram’s horn and his men
dispersed from the city, each to his own home. And
Joab returned to the king in Jerusalem.
And David
went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of
Jonathan his son from the men of
Jabesh-
gilead, which had
stolen them from the street of Beth-shan, where the Philistines had
hanged them, when the Philistines had slain Saul in
Gilboa:
he
went and took the bones of Saul and his son
Jonathan from the men of
Jabesh-
gilead, who had
stolen them from the public square of Beth-shan where the Philistines had hung the bodies after they had struck down Saul at
Gilboa.
Moreover the Philistines had yet war again with Israel; and David
went down, and his servants with him, and fought against the Philistines: and David waxed
faint.
Once again the Philistines
waged war against Israel, and David and his servants
went down and fought against the Philistines; but David became exhausted.
There
went up a smoke out of his nostrils, and fire out of his mouth
devoured: coals were
kindled by it.
And after him was
Eleazar the son of
Dodo the Ahohite, one of the three mighty men with David, when they
defied the Philistines that were there gathered together to battle, and the men of Israel were gone away:
Next in command was
Eleazar son of
Dodo the Ahohite. As one of the three mighty men, he
went with David to
taunt the Philistines who had gathered for battle at
Pas-dammim. The men of Israel retreated,
And three of the thirty chief
went down, and came to David in the harvest time unto the cave of
Adullam: and the
troop of the Philistines pitched in the valley of
Rephaim.
At harvest time, three of the thirty chief men
went down to David at the cave of
Adullam, while a company of Philistines was
encamped in the Valley of
Rephaim.
And he said, Be it far from me, O LORD, that I should do this: is not this the blood of the men that
went in
jeopardy of their lives? therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mighty men.
saying, “Far be it from me, O LORD, to do this! Is this not the blood of the men who risked their lives?” So he refused to drink it. Such were the exploits of the three mighty men.
And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a
valiant man, of Kabzeel, who had done many acts, he
slew two
lionlike men of Moab: he
went down also and
slew a lion in the midst of a pit in time of snow:
And Benaiah son of Jehoiada was a man of
valor from Kabzeel, a man of many exploits. He struck down two champions of Moab, and on a
snowy day he
went down into a pit and killed a lion.
And he
slew an Egyptian, a goodly man: and the Egyptian had a
spear in his hand; but he
went down to him with a staff, and
plucked the
spear out of the Egyptian’s hand, and
slew him with his own
spear.
He also killed an Egyptian, a huge man. Although the Egyptian had a
spear in his hand, Benaiah
went against him with a club,
snatched the
spear from his hand, and killed the Egyptian with his own
spear.
Notwithstanding the king’s word prevailed against
Joab, and against the captains of the host. And
Joab and the captains of the host
went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel.
Nevertheless, the king’s word prevailed against
Joab and against the commanders of the army. So
Joab and the commanders of the army departed from the presence of the king to count the troops of Israel.
Then they came to
Gilead, and to the land of Tahtim-hodshi; and they came to
Dan-jaan, and about to Zidon,
Then they
went to
Gilead and the land of Tahtim-hodshi, and on to
Dan-jaan and around to
Sidon.
And came to the strong hold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the
Hivites, and of the
Canaanites: and they
went out to the south of Judah, even to Beer-
sheba.
They
went toward the fortress of Tyre and all the cities of the
Hivites and
Canaanites. Finally, they
went on to the Negev of Judah, to
Beersheba.
So
Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or
wilt thou
flee three months before thine enemies, while they pursue thee? or that there be three days’
pestilence in thy land? now
advise, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me.
So
Gad went and said to David, “Do you choose to
endure three years of famine in your land, three months of
fleeing the pursuit of your enemies, or three days of plague upon your land? Now then, think it over and decide how I should reply to Him who sent me.”
And David, according to the saying of
Gad,
went up as the LORD commanded.
So David
went up at the word of
Gad, just as the LORD had commanded.
And Araunah looked, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him: and Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king on his face upon the ground.
When Araunah looked out and saw the king and his servants coming toward him, he went out and bowed facedown before the king.
And Bath-
sheba went in unto the king into the chamber: and the king was very old; and
Abishag the Shunammite ministered unto the king.
So Bathsheba
went to see the king in his
bedroom. Since the king was very old,
Abishag the Shunammite was serving him.
And they told the king, saying, Behold
Nathan the prophet. And when he was come in before the king, he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.
So the king was told, “
Nathan the prophet is here.” And
Nathan went in and bowed facedown before the king.
So
Zadok the priest, and
Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites,
went down, and caused Solomon to
ride upon king David’s
mule, and brought him to
Gihon.
Then
Zadok the priest,
Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada, along with the Cherethites and Pelethites,
went down and set Solomon on King David’s
mule, and they
escorted him to
Gihon.
And all the guests that were with Adonijah were afraid, and rose up, and went every man his way.
At this, all the guests of Adonijah arose in terror and scattered.
And Adonijah feared because of Solomon, and arose, and went, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.
But Adonijah, in fear of Solomon, got up and went to take hold of the horns of the altar.
And, behold, thou hast with thee Shimei the son of
Gera, a
Benjamite of Bahurim, which
cursed me with a
grievous curse in the day when I
went to
Mahanaim: but he came down to meet me at Jordan, and I
sware to him by the LORD, saying, I will not put thee to death with the sword.
Keep an eye on Shimei the son of
Gera, the
Benjamite from Bahurim who is with you. He called down bitter curses against me on the day I
went to
Mahanaim, but when he came down to meet me at the Jordan, I
swore to him by the LORD: ‘I will never put you to the sword.’
And Adonijah the son of Haggith came to Bath-
sheba the mother of Solomon. And she said, Comest thou
peaceably? And he said,
Peaceably.
Now Adonijah son of Haggith
went to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, and she asked, “Do you come in peace?” “
Yes, in peace,” he replied.
Bath-
sheba therefore
went unto king Solomon, to speak unto him for Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her, and bowed himself unto her, and sat down on his throne, and caused a seat to be set for the king’s mother; and she sat on his right hand.
So Bathsheba
went to King Solomon to speak to him for Adonijah. The king stood up to
greet her, bowed to her, and sat down on his throne. Then the king had a throne brought for his mother, who sat down at his right hand.
So Benaiah the son of Jehoiada
went up, and fell upon him, and
slew him: and he was buried in his own house in the wilderness.
So Benaiah son of Jehoiada
went up, struck down
Joab, and killed him. He was buried at his own home in the wilderness.
And Shimei arose, and
saddled his
ass, and
went to
Gath to Achish to seek his servants: and Shimei
went, and brought his servants from
Gath.
So Shimei
saddled his
donkey and set out to Achish at
Gath in search of his slaves, and he brought them back from
Gath.
So the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; which went out, and fell upon him, that he died. And the kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon.
Then the king commanded Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and he went out and struck Shimei down, and he died. Thus the kingdom was firmly established in the hand of Solomon.
And the king
went to
Gibeon to sacrifice there; for that was the great high place: a thousand burnt offerings did Solomon offer upon that altar.
Now the king
went to
Gibeon to sacrifice there, for it was the great high place. Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on the altar there.
The door for the middle chamber was in the right side of the house: and they went up with winding stairs into the middle chamber, and out of the middle into the third.
The entrance to the bottom floor was on the south side of the temple. A
stairway led up to the middle level, and from there to the third floor.
On the eighth day he sent the people away: and they blessed the king, and
went unto their tents joyful and
glad of heart for all the goodness that the LORD had done for David his servant, and for Israel his people.
On the
fifteenth day Solomon sent the people away. So they blessed the king and
went home, joyful and
glad in heart for all the good things that the LORD had done for His servant David and for His people Israel.
And
Hiram came out from Tyre to see the cities which Solomon had given him; and they pleased him not.
So
Hiram went out from Tyre to
inspect the towns that Solomon had given him, but he was not pleased with them.
And the meat of his table, and the sitting of his servants, and the attendance of his ministers, and their
apparel, and his cupbearers, and his
ascent by which he
went up unto the house of the LORD; there was no more spirit in her.
the food at his table, the seating of his servants, the service and
attire of his attendants and cupbearers, and the burnt offerings he presented at the house of the LORD, it took her breath away.
And king Solomon gave unto the queen of
Sheba all her desire,
whatsoever she asked, beside that which Solomon gave her of his royal
bounty. So she turned and
went to her own country, she and her servants.
King Solomon gave the queen of
Sheba all she desired—whatever she asked—besides what he had given her out of his royal
bounty. Then she left and returned to her own country, along with her servants.
And king Solomon made two hundred targets of beaten gold: six hundred shekels of gold
went to one
target.
King Solomon made two hundred large shields of hammered gold; six hundred shekels of gold went into each shield.
And he made three hundred shields of beaten gold; three pound of gold
went to one shield: and the king put them in the house of the forest of
Lebanon.
He also made three hundred small shields of hammered gold; three
minas of gold
went into each shield. And the king put them in the House of the Forest of
Lebanon.
And a
chariot came up and
went out of Egypt for six hundred shekels of silver, and an horse for an hundred and fifty: and so for all the kings of the
Hittites, and for the kings of Syria, did they bring them out by their means.
A
chariot could be imported from Egypt for six hundred shekels of silver, and a horse for a hundred and fifty. Likewise, they exported them to all the kings of the
Hittites and to the kings of
Aram.
And Solomon did evil in the sight of the LORD, and went not fully after the LORD, as did David his father.
So Solomon did evil in the sight of the LORD; unlike his father David, he did not follow the LORD completely.
And they arose out of
Midian, and came to
Paran: and they took men with them out of
Paran, and they came to Egypt, unto Pharaoh king of Egypt; which gave him an house, and appointed him
victuals, and gave him land.
Hadad and his men set out from
Midian and
went to
Paran. They took men from
Paran with them and
went to Egypt, to Pharaoh king of Egypt, who gave
Hadad a house and land and provided him with food.
And he gathered men unto him, and became captain over a band, when David
slew them of Zobah: and they
went to Damascus, and dwelt therein, and reigned in Damascus.
and had gathered men to himself. When David killed the Zobaites, Rezon captained a band of raiders and went to Damascus, where they settled and gained control.
And it came to pass at that time when
Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, that the prophet
Ahijah the Shilonite found him in the way; and he had
clad himself with a new garment; and they two were alone in the field:
During that time, the prophet
Ahijah the Shilonite met
Jeroboam on the road as he was going out of Jerusalem. Now
Ahijah had
wrapped himself in a new
cloak, and the two of them were alone in the open field.
Then
Rehoboam went to
Shechem, for all Israel had gone there to make him king.
So when all Israel saw that the king
hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of
Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.
When all Israel saw that the king had refused to
listen to them, they answered the king: “What portion do we have in David, and what inheritance in the son of
Jesse? To your tents, O Israel! Look now to your own house, O David!” So the Israelites
went home,
Then
Jeroboam built
Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt therein; and
went out from thence, and built Penuel.
Then
Jeroboam built
Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim and lived there. And from there he
went out and built Penuel.
And this thing became a sin: for the people
went to worship before the one, even unto
Dan.
And this thing became a sin; the people walked as far as
Dan to worship before one of the
calves.
So he
went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to
Bethel.
So the man of God
went another way and did not return by the way he had come to
Bethel.
And their father said unto them, What way went he? For his sons had seen what way the man of God went, which came from Judah.
“Which way did he go?” their father asked. And his sons showed him the way taken by the man of God, who had come from Judah.
And went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak: and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am.
and went after the man of God. He found him sitting under an oak tree and asked, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?” “I am,” he replied.
