When thou criest, let thy companies deliver thee; but the
wind shall carry them all away; vanity shall take them: but he that putteth his trust in me shall possess the land, and shall
inherit my holy mountain;
When you cry out, let your companies of idols deliver you! Yet the
wind will carry off all of them, a breath will take them away. But he who seeks refuge in Me will
inherit the land and possess My holy mountain.”
Who are these that fly as a cloud, and as the doves to their windows?
Who are these who fly like clouds, like doves to their shelters?
The LORD hath
sworn by his right hand, and by the arm of his strength, Surely I will no more give thy corn to be meat for thine enemies; and the sons of the stranger shall not drink thy
wine, for the which thou hast laboured:
The LORD has
sworn by His right hand and by His mighty arm: “Never again will I give your grain to your enemies for food, nor will foreigners drink the new
wine for which you have
toiled.
But they that have gathered it shall eat it, and praise the LORD; and they that have brought it together shall drink it in the courts of my
holiness.
For those who harvest grain will eat it and praise the LORD, and those who gather grapes will drink the wine in My holy courts.”
Wherefore art thou red in thine
apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the
winefat?
Why are Your clothes red, and Your garments like one who treads the winepress?
I have
trodden the
winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will
tread them in mine anger, and
trample them in my
fury; and their blood shall be
sprinkled upon my garments, and I will
stain all my
raiment.
“I have
trodden the
winepress alone, and no one from the nations was with Me. I
trampled them in My anger and
trod them down in My
fury; their blood
spattered My garments, and all My clothes were
stained.
But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as
filthy rags; and we all do
fade as a leaf; and our
iniquities, like the
wind, have taken us away.
Each of us has become like something unclean, and all our righteous acts are like
filthy rags; we all wither like a leaf, and our
iniquities carry us away like the
wind.
Thus saith the LORD, As the new
wine is found in the
cluster, and one saith, Destroy it not; for a blessing is in it: so will I do for my servants’ sakes, that I may not destroy them all.
This is what the LORD says: “As the new
wine is found in a
cluster of grapes, and men say, ‘Do not destroy it, for it contains a blessing,’ so I will act on behalf of My servants; I will not destroy them all.
But ye are they that
forsake the LORD, that
forget my holy mountain, that prepare a table for that
troop, and that furnish the drink offering unto that number.
But you who
forsake the LORD, who
forget My holy mountain, who set a table for Fortune and fill
bowls of mixed
wine for
Destiny,
A wild
ass used to the wilderness, that snuffeth up the
wind at her pleasure; in her occasion who can turn her away? all they that seek her will not
weary themselves; in her month they shall find her.
a wild
donkey at home in the wilderness,
sniffing the
wind in the heat of her desire. Who can restrain her passion? All who seek her need not
weary themselves; in mating season they will find her.
At that time shall it be said to this people and to Jerusalem, A dry
wind of the high places in the wilderness toward the daughter of my people, not to
fan, nor to
cleanse,
At that time it will be said to this people and to Jerusalem, “A
searing wind from the barren heights in the desert blows toward the daughter of My people, but not to
winnow or to
sift;
Even a full wind from those places shall come unto me: now also will I give sentence against them.
a
wind too strong for that comes from Me. Now I also
pronounce judgments against them.”
And the prophets shall become wind, and the word is not in them: thus shall it be done unto them.
The prophets are but
wind, for the word is not in them. So let their own predictions
befall them.”
For death is come up into our windows, and is entered into our palaces, to cut off the children from without, and the young men from the streets.
For death has
climbed in through our
windows; it has entered our fortresses to cut off the children from the streets, the young men from the town squares.
When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapors to
ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the
wind out of his treasures.
When He thunders, the waters in the heavens
roar; He causes the clouds to rise from the ends of the earth. He generates the
lightning with the rain and brings forth the
wind from His storehouses.
Therefore thou shalt speak unto them this word; Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Every
bottle shall be filled with
wine: and they shall say unto thee, Do we not certainly know that every
bottle shall be filled with
wine?
Therefore you are to tell them that this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Every wineskin shall be filled with wine.’ And when they reply, ‘Don’t we surely know that every wineskin should be filled with wine?’
Therefore will I
scatter them as the
stubble that passeth away by the
wind of the wilderness.
And the wild
asses did stand in the high places, they
snuffed up the
wind like
dragons; their eyes did fail, because there was no grass.
Wild
donkeys stand on barren heights; they
pant for air like jackals; their eyes fail for lack of pasture.”
And I will
fan them with a
fan in the gates of the land; I will
bereave them of children, I will destroy my people, since they return not from their ways.
I will
scatter them with a
winnowing fork at the gates of the land. I will
bereave and destroy My people who have not turned from their ways.
I will
scatter them as with an east
wind before the enemy; I will
shew them the back, and not the face, in the day of their
calamity.
I will
scatter them before the enemy like the east
wind. I will show them My back and not My face in the day of their
calamity.”
That saith, I will build me a wide house and large chambers, and cutteth him out
windows; and it is cieled with
cedar, and painted with
vermilion.
who says, ‘I will build myself a great palace, with
spacious upper rooms.’ So he cuts
windows in it, panels it with
cedar, and paints it with
vermilion.
The
wind shall eat up all thy pastors, and thy lovers shall go into captivity: surely then shalt thou be
ashamed and confounded for all thy wickedness.
The
wind will drive away all your
shepherds, and your lovers will go into captivity. Then you will be
ashamed and
humiliated because of all your wickedness.
Mine heart within me is broken because of the prophets; all my bones
shake; I am like a
drunken man, and like a man whom
wine hath overcome, because of the LORD, and because of the words of his
holiness.
As for the prophets: My heart is broken within me, and all my bones
tremble. I have become like a
drunkard, like a man overcome by
wine, because of the LORD, because of His holy words.
For thus saith the LORD God of Israel unto me; Take the
wine cup of this
fury at my hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send thee, to drink it.
This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me: “Take from My hand this cup of the wine of wrath, and make all the nations to whom I send you drink from it.
Therefore they shall come and sing in the height of
Zion, and shall flow together to the goodness of the LORD, for wheat, and for
wine, and for oil, and for the young of the flock and of the
herd: and their soul shall be as a watered garden; and they shall not sorrow any more at all.
They will come and
shout for joy on the heights of
Zion; they will be
radiant over the
bounty of the LORD— the grain, new
wine, and oil, and the young of the flocks and herds. Their life will be like a well-watered garden, and never again will they
languish.
Go unto the house of the
Rechabites, and speak unto them, and bring them into the house of the LORD, into one of the chambers, and give them
wine to drink.
“Go to the house of the
Rechabites, speak to them, and bring them to one of the chambers of the house of the LORD to offer them a drink of
wine.”
And I set before the sons of the house of the
Rechabites pots full of
wine, and cups, and I said unto them, Drink ye
wine.
Then I set pitchers full of
wine and some cups before the men of the house of the
Rechabites, and I said to them, “Drink some
wine.”
But they said, We will drink no wine: for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying, Ye shall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your sons for ever:
“We do not drink
wine,” they replied, “for our
forefather Jonadab son of Rechab commanded us, ‘Neither you nor your descendants are ever to drink
wine.
Thus have we obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab our father in all that he hath charged us, to drink no wine all our days, we, our wives, our sons, nor our daughters;
And we have obeyed the voice of our
forefather Jonadab son of Rechab in all he commanded us. So we have not
drunk wine all our lives—neither we nor our wives nor our sons and daughters.
The words of Jonadab the son of Rechab, that he commanded his sons not to drink
wine, are performed; for unto this day they drink none, but obey their father’s commandment: notwithstanding I have spoken unto you, rising early and speaking; but ye
hearkened not unto me.
The words of Jonadab son of Rechab have been carried out. He commanded his sons not to drink
wine, and they have not
drunk it to this very day because they have obeyed the command of their
forefather. But I have spoken to you again and again, and you have not obeyed Me!
Now the king sat in the
winterhouse in the ninth month: and there was a fire on the
hearth burning before him.
Since it was the ninth month, the king was sitting in his winter quarters with a fire burning before him.
As for me, behold, I will dwell at
Mizpah to serve the Chaldeans, which will come unto us: but ye, gather ye
wine, and summer fruits, and oil, and put them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that ye have taken.
As for me, I will stay in
Mizpah to represent you before the Chaldeans who come to us. As for you, gather
wine grapes, summer fruit, and oil, place them in your
storage jars, and live in the cities you have taken.”
Even all the Jews returned out of all places
whither they were driven, and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah, unto
Mizpah, and gathered
wine and summer fruits very much.
they all returned from all the places to which they had been banished and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah at
Mizpah. And they gathered an abundance of
wine grapes and summer fruit.
Give
wings unto Moab, that it may
flee and get away: for the cities thereof shall be
desolate, without any to dwell therein.
Put salt on Moab, for she will be laid waste; her cities will become
desolate, with no one to dwell in them.
Moab hath been at ease from his youth, and he hath settled on his
lees, and hath not been
emptied from vessel to vessel, neither hath he gone into captivity: therefore his taste remained in him, and his
scent is not changed.
Moab has been at ease from youth, settled like
wine on its
dregs; he has not been poured from vessel to vessel or gone into exile. So his
flavor has remained the same, and his
aroma is unchanged.
Joy and
gladness are removed from the
orchard and from the fields of Moab. I have stopped the flow of
wine from the presses; no one treads them with shouts of joy; their shouts are not for joy.
For thus saith the LORD; Behold, he shall fly as an eagle, and shall spread his wings over Moab.
For this is what the LORD says: “Behold, an eagle swoops down and spreads his wings against Moab.
Behold, he shall come up and fly as the eagle, and spread his
wings over
Bozrah: and at that day shall the heart of the mighty men of
Edom be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.
Look! An eagle will
soar and
swoop down, spreading its
wings over
Bozrah. In that day the hearts of
Edom’s mighty men will be like the heart of a woman in labor.
And their camels shall be a
booty, and the multitude of their cattle a
spoil: and I will
scatter into all
winds them that are in the utmost corners; and I will bring their
calamity from all sides thereof, saith the LORD.
Their camels will become
plunder, and their large herds will be
spoil. I will
scatter to the
wind in every direction those who
shave their temples; I will bring
calamity on them from all sides,” declares the LORD.
And upon
Elam will I bring the four
winds from the four quarters of heaven, and will
scatter them toward all those
winds; and there shall be no nation
whither the outcasts of
Elam shall not come.
I will bring the four
winds against
Elam from the four corners of the heavens, and I will
scatter them to all these
winds. There will not be a nation to which
Elam’s exiles will not go.
Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will raise up against Babylon, and against them that dwell in the midst of them that rise up against me, a destroying wind;
This is what the LORD says: “Behold, I will
stir up against Babylon and against the people of Leb-kamai the spirit of a destroyer.
And will send unto Babylon fanners, that shall
fan her, and shall empty her land: for in the day of trouble they shall be against her round about.
I will send strangers to Babylon to
winnow her and empty her land; for they will come against her from every side in her day of
disaster.
Babylon hath been a golden cup in the LORD’S hand, that made all the earth
drunken: the nations have
drunken of her
wine; therefore the nations are
mad.
Babylon was a gold cup in the hand of the LORD, making the whole earth
drunk. The nations
drank her
wine; therefore the nations have gone
mad.
When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens; and he causeth the vapors to
ascend from the ends of the earth: he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the
wind out of his treasures.
When He thunders, the waters in the heavens
roar; He causes the clouds to rise from the ends of the earth. He generates the
lightning with the rain and brings forth the
wind from His storehouses.
The Lord hath
trodden under foot all my mighty men in the midst of me: he hath called an assembly against me to
crush my young men: the Lord hath
trodden the virgin, the daughter of Judah, as in a
winepress.
The Lord has rejected all the mighty men in my midst; He has summoned an army against me to
crush my young warriors. Like grapes in a
winepress, the Lord has
trampled the Virgin Daughter of Judah.
They say to their mothers, Where is corn and
wine? when they
swooned as the wounded in the streets of the city, when their soul was poured out into their mothers’
bosom.
They cry out to their mothers: “Where is the grain and
wine?” as they
faint like the wounded in the streets of the city, as their lives
fade away in the arms of their mothers.
And every one had four faces, and every one had four wings.
but each had four faces and four wings.
And they had the hands of a man under their wings on their four sides; and they four had their faces and their wings.
Under their wings on their four sides they had human hands. All four living creatures had faces and wings,
Their wings were joined one to another; they turned not when they went; they went every one straight forward.
and their
wings were touching one another. They did not turn as they moved; each one went straight
ahead.
Thus were their faces: and their wings were stretched upward; two wings of every one were joined one to another, and two covered their bodies.
Such were their faces. Their wings were spread upward; each had two wings touching the wings of the creature on either side, and two wings covering its body.
And under the
firmament were their
wings straight, the one toward the other: every one had two, which covered on this side, and every one had two, which covered on that side, their bodies.
And under the
expanse, their
wings stretched out toward one another. Each one also had two
wings covering its body.
And when they went, I heard the noise of their
wings, like the noise of great waters, as the voice of the
Almighty, the voice of speech, as the noise of an host: when they stood, they let down their
wings.
When the creatures moved, I heard the sound of their
wings like the
roar of many waters, like the voice of the
Almighty, like the
tumult of an army. When they stood still, they lowered their
wings.
And there was a voice from the
firmament that was over their heads, when they stood, and had let down their
wings.
And there came a voice from above the
expanse over their heads as they stood still with their
wings lowered.
I heard also the noise of the
wings of the living creatures that touched one another, and the noise of the wheels over against them, and a noise of a great
rushing.
It was the sound of the
wings of the living creatures
brushing against one another and the sound of the wheels beside them, a great
rumbling sound.
Thou shalt burn with fire a third part in the midst of the city, when the days of the siege are fulfilled: and thou shalt take a third part, and
smite about it with a knife: and a third part thou shalt
scatter in the
wind; and I will draw out a sword after them.
When the days of the siege have ended, you are to burn up a third of the hair inside the city; you are also to take a third and
slash it with the sword all around the city; and you are to
scatter a third to the
wind. For I will
unleash a sword behind them.
Therefore the fathers shall eat the sons in the midst of thee, and the sons shall eat their fathers; and I will
execute judgments in thee, and the whole
remnant of thee will I
scatter into all the
winds.
As a result, fathers among you will eat their sons, and sons will eat their fathers. I will
execute judgments against you and
scatter all your
remnant to every
wind.’
A third part of thee shall die with the
pestilence, and with famine shall they be consumed in the midst of thee: and a third part shall fall by the sword round about thee and I will
scatter a third part into all the
winds, and I will draw out a sword after them.
A third of your people will die by plague or be consumed by famine within you, a third will fall by the sword outside your walls, and a third I will
scatter to every
wind and
unleash a sword behind them.
And the sound of the cherubims’
wings was heard even to the outer court, as the voice of the
Almighty God when he speaketh.
The sound of the
wings of the
cherubim could be heard as far as the outer court, like the voice of God
Almighty when He speaks.
And there appeared in the cherubims the form of a man’s hand under their wings.
(The
cherubim appeared to have the form of human hands under their
wings.)
And their whole body, and their backs, and their hands, and their wings, and the wheels, were full of eyes round about, even the wheels that they four had.
Their entire bodies, including their backs, hands, and wings, were full of eyes all around, as were their four wheels.
And when the cherubims went, the wheels went by them: and when the cherubims lifted up their wings to mount up from the earth, the same wheels also turned not from beside them.
When the
cherubim moved, the wheels moved beside them, and even when they spread their
wings to rise from the ground, the wheels did not
veer away from their side.
And the cherubims lifted up their wings, and mounted up from the earth in my sight: when they went out, the wheels also were beside them, and every one stood at the door of the east gate of the LORD’S house; and the glory of the God of Israel was over them above.
As I watched, the
cherubim lifted their
wings and rose up from the ground, with the wheels beside them as they went. And they stopped at the entrance of the east gate of the house of the LORD, with the glory of the God of Israel above them.
Every one had four faces
apiece, and every one four
wings; and the likeness of the hands of a man was under their
wings.
Each had four faces and four wings, with what looked like human hands under their wings.
Then did the cherubims lift up their wings, and the wheels beside them; and the glory of the God of Israel was over them above.
Then the
cherubim, with the wheels beside them, spread their
wings, and the glory of the God of Israel was above them.
And I will
scatter toward every
wind all that are about him to help him, and all his bands; and I will draw out the sword after them.
And I will
scatter to every
wind all the attendants around him and all his troops, and I will draw a sword to
chase after them.
Say unto them which
daub it with untempered
morter, that it shall fall: there shall be an overflowing shower; and ye, O great hailstones, shall fall; and a
stormy wind shall
rend it.
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; I will even
rend it with a
stormy wind in my
fury; and there shall be an overflowing shower in mine anger, and great hailstones in my
fury to
consume it.
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: In My wrath I will release a
windstorm, and in My anger torrents of rain and
hail will fall with destructive
fury.
And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; A great eagle with great
wings, longwinged, full of feathers, which had
divers colours, came unto
Lebanon, and took the highest branch of the
cedar:
and tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘A great eagle with great
wings and long pinions, full of feathers of many colors, came to
Lebanon and took away the top of the
cedar.
There was also another great eagle with great
wings and many feathers: and, behold, this vine did bend her roots toward him, and shot forth her branches toward him, that he might water it by the furrows of her
plantation.
But there was another great eagle with great wings and many feathers. And behold, this vine bent its roots toward him. It stretched out its branches to him from its planting bed, so that he might water it.
Yea, behold, being planted, shall it
prosper? shall it not utterly wither, when the east
wind toucheth it? it shall wither in the furrows where it grew.
Even if it is
transplanted, will it
flourish? Will it not completely wither when the east
wind strikes? It will wither on the bed where it
sprouted.’”
And all his fugitives with all his bands shall fall by the sword, and they that remain shall be scattered toward all winds: and ye shall know that I the LORD have spoken it.
All his choice troops will fall by the sword, and those who
survive will be scattered to every
wind. Then you will know that I, the LORD, have spoken.’
In the mountain of the height of Israel will I plant it: and it shall bring forth boughs, and bear fruit, and be a goodly
cedar: and under it shall dwell all fowl of every
wing; in the shadow of the branches thereof shall they dwell.
I will plant it on the mountain heights of Israel so that it will bear branches; it will yield fruit and become a
majestic cedar. Birds of every kind will nest under it, taking shelter in the shade of its branches.
But she was
plucked up in
fury, she was cast down to the ground, and the east
wind dried up her fruit: her strong rods were broken and
withered; the fire consumed them.
But it was uprooted in
fury, cast down to the ground, and the east
wind dried up its fruit. Its strong branches were
stripped off and they
withered; the fire consumed them.
Damascus was thy merchant in the multitude of the wares of thy making, for the multitude of all riches; in the wine of Helbon, and white wool.
Because of your many products and your great wealth of goods, Damascus traded with you wine from Helbon, wool from Zahar,
and casks of
wine from Izal for your wares. Wrought iron,
cassia, and sweet cane were exchanged for your
merchandise.
Thy rowers have brought thee into great waters: the east wind hath broken thee in the midst of the seas.
Your
oarsmen have brought you
onto the high seas, but the east
wind will
shatter you in the heart of the sea.
Then said he unto me,
Prophesy unto the
wind,
prophesy, son of man, and say to the
wind, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Come from the four
winds, O breath, and
breathe upon these slain, that they may live.
Then He said to me, “
Prophesy to the breath;
prophesy, son of man, and tell the breath that this is what the Lord GOD says: Come from the four
winds, O breath, and
breathe into these slain, so that they may live!”
And there were narrow windows to the little chambers, and to their posts within the gate round about, and likewise to the arches: and windows were round about inward: and upon each post were palm trees.
The gate chambers and their side pillars had
beveled windows all around the inside of the
gateway. The
porticos also had
windows all around on the inside. Each side
pillar was decorated with palm trees.
And their windows, and their arches, and their palm trees, were after the measure of the gate that looketh toward the east; and they went up unto it by seven steps; and the arches thereof were before them.
Its
windows,
portico, and palm trees had the same measurements as those of the gate facing east. Seven steps led up to it, with its
portico opposite them.
And there were windows in it and in the arches thereof round about, like those windows: the length was fifty cubits, and the breadth five and twenty cubits.
Both the
gateway and its
portico had
windows all around, like the other
windows. It was fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide.
And the little chambers thereof, and the posts thereof, and the arches thereof, according to these measures: and there were windows in it and in the arches thereof round about: it was fifty cubits long, and five and twenty cubits broad.
Its gate chambers, side pillars, and
portico had the same measurements as the others. Both the
gateway and its
portico had
windows all around; it was fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide.
And the little chambers thereof, and the posts thereof, and the arches thereof, were according to these measures: and there were windows therein and in the arches thereof round about: it was fifty cubits long, and five and twenty cubits broad.
Its gate chambers, side pillars, and
portico had the same measurements as the others. Both the
gateway and its
portico had
windows all around. It was fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide.
The little chambers thereof, the posts thereof, and the arches thereof, and the windows to it round about: the length was fifty cubits, and the breadth five and twenty cubits.
as did its gate chambers, side pillars, and
portico. It also had
windows all around. It was fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide.
And there was an
enlarging, and a
winding about still upward to the side chambers: for the
winding about of the house went still upward round about the house: therefore the breadth of the house was still upward, and so increased from the lowest chamber to the highest by the midst.
The side rooms surrounding the temple
widened at each successive level, because the structure surrounding the temple ascended by stages corresponding to the narrowing of the temple wall as it rose upward. And so a
stairway went up from the lowest story to the highest, through the middle one.
The door posts, and the narrow
windows, and the
galleries round about on their three stories, over against the door, cieled with wood round about, and from the ground up to the
windows, and the
windows were covered;
as well as the thresholds and the
beveled windows and the
galleries all around with their three levels opposite the
threshold, were overlaid with wood on all sides. They were
paneled from the ground to the
windows, and the
windows were covered.
And there were narrow
windows and palm trees on the one side and on the other side, on the sides of the
porch, and upon the side chambers of the house, and thick planks.
There were
beveled windows and palm trees on the sidewalls of the
portico. The side rooms of the temple also had
canopies.
Neither shall any priest drink wine, when they enter into the inner court.
No priest may drink wine before he enters the inner court.
And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king’s meat, and of the
wine which he
drank: so
nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.
The king assigned them daily provisions of the royal food and wine. They were to be trained for three years, after which they were to enter the king’s service.
But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not
defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the
wine which he
drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not
defile himself.
But Daniel made up his mind that he would not
defile himself with the king’s food or
wine. So he asked the chief official for permission not to
defile himself.
Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the
wine that they should drink; and gave them
pulse.
So the
steward continued to
withhold their choice food and the
wine they were to drink, and he gave them vegetables instead.
Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the
chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the
wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that
smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.
Then the iron, clay, bronze, silver, and gold were
shattered and became like
chaff on the
threshing floor in summer. The
wind carried them away, and not a trace of them could be found. But the stone that had struck the statue became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.
Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and
drank wine before the thousand.
Later, King
Belshazzar held a great feast for a thousand of his nobles, and he
drank wine with them.
Belshazzar, whiles he tasted the
wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father
Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink therein.
Under the influence of the
wine,
Belshazzar gave orders to bring in the gold and silver vessels that
Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken from the temple in Jerusalem, so that the king could drink from them, along with his nobles, his wives, and his concubines.
They
drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.
As they
drank the
wine, they praised their gods of gold and silver, bronze and iron, wood and stone.
But hast lifted up
thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have
drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not
glorified:
Instead, you have
exalted yourself against the Lord of heaven. The vessels from His house were brought to you, and as you
drank wine from them with your nobles, wives, and concubines, you praised your gods of silver and gold, bronze and iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand. But you have failed to
glorify the God who holds in His hand your very breath and all your ways.
Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his
windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he
kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave
thanks before his God, as he did
aforetime.
Now when Daniel learned that the document had been signed, he went into his house, where the
windows of his upper room opened toward Jerusalem, and three times a day he got down on his knees, prayed, and gave
thanks to his God, just as he had done before.
Daniel spake and said, I saw in my vision by night, and, behold, the four
winds of the heaven
strove upon the great sea.
Daniel declared: “In my vision in the night I looked, and suddenly the four
winds of heaven were
churning up the great sea.
The first was like a lion, and had eagle’s
wings: I
beheld till the
wings thereof were
plucked, and it was lifted up from the earth, and made stand upon the feet as a man, and a man’s heart was given to it.
The first beast was like a lion, and it had the
wings of an eagle. I watched until its
wings were
torn off and it was lifted up from the ground and made to stand on two feet like a man, and given the mind of a man.
After this I
beheld, and lo another, like a
leopard, which had upon the back of it four
wings of a fowl; the beast had also four heads; and dominion was given to it.
Next, as I watched, another beast appeared. It was like a
leopard, and on its back it had four
wings like those of a bird. The beast also had four heads, and it was given authority to rule.
Therefore the he goat waxed very great: and when he was strong, the great horn was broken; and for it came up four notable ones toward the four winds of heaven.
Thus the goat became very great, but at the height of his power, his large horn was broken off, and four prominent horns came up in its place, pointing toward the four winds of heaven.
