And in every province, and in every city,
whithersoever the king’s commandment and his decree came, the Jews had joy and
gladness, a feast and a good day. And many of the people of the land became Jews; for the fear of the Jews fell upon them.
In every province and every city, wherever the king’s edict and decree reached, there was joy and
gladness among the Jews,
with feasting and
celebrating. And many of the people of the land themselves became Jews, because the fear of the Jews had fallen upon them.
The Jews gathered themselves together in their cities throughout all the provinces of the king
Ahasuerus, to lay hand on such as sought their
hurt: and no man could
withstand them; for the fear of them fell upon all people.
In each of the provinces of King
Xerxes, the Jews assembled in their cities to attack those who sought to
harm them. No man could
withstand them, because the fear of them had fallen upon all peoples.
Thus the Jews
smote all their enemies
with the stroke of the sword, and slaughter, and destruction, and did what they would unto those that
hated them.
The Jews put all their enemies to the sword, killing and destroying them, and they did as they pleased to those who
hated them.
And he sent the letters unto all the Jews, to the hundred twenty and seven provinces of the kingdom of
Ahasuerus,
with words of peace and truth,
And
Mordecai sent letters
with words of peace and truth to all the Jews in the 127 provinces of the kingdom of
Xerxes,
And all the acts of his power and of his might, and the declaration of the greatness of
Mordecai,
whereunto the king advanced him, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Media and Persia?
And all of
Mordecai’s powerful and magnificent accomplishments, together
with the full account of the greatness to which the king had raised him, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Media and Persia?
And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
Job’s sons would take turns holding feasts in their homes, and they would
invite their three sisters to eat and drink
with them.
Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and
Satan came also among them.
One day the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and
Satan also came
with them.
And the
Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away;
yea, they have slain the servants
with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
the
Sabeans swooped down and took them away. They put the servants to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away,
yea, and slain the servants
with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
While he was still speaking, another
messenger came and reported: “The Chaldeans formed three bands,
raided the camels, and took them away. They put the servants to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
In all this, Job did not sin or charge God
with wrongdoing.
Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and
Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.
On another day the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and
Satan also came
with them to present himself before Him.
And the LORD said unto
Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his
integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him
without cause.
Then the LORD said to
Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one on earth like him, a man who is
blameless and upright, who fears God and shuns evil. He still retains his
integrity, even though you incited Me against him to ruin him
without cause.”
So went
Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and
smote Job
with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.
So
Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and
infected Job
with terrible boils from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head.
And Job took a piece of broken pottery to
scrape himself as he sat among the ashes.
But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the
foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin
with his lips.
“You speak as a
foolish woman speaks,” he told her. “Should we accept from God only good and not
adversity?” In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.
Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and
Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to
mourn with him and to comfort him.
Now when Job’s three friends—Eliphaz the Temanite,
Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite—heard about all this
adversity that had come upon him, each of them came from his home, and they met together to go and
sympathize with Job and comfort him.
So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great.
Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights, but no one spoke a word to him because they saw how intense his suffering was.
With kings and counsellors of the earth, which built
desolate places for themselves;
with kings and counselors of the earth, who built for themselves cities now in ruins,
Or with princes that had gold, who filled their houses with silver:
or with princes who had gold, who filled their houses with silver.
“If one ventures a word
with you, will you be
wearied? Yet who can keep from speaking?
Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his angels he charged with folly:
If God puts no trust in His servants, and He charges His angels with error,
They are destroyed from morning to evening: they perish for ever without any regarding it.
Doth not their
excellency which is in them go away? they die, even
without wisdom.
Are not their tent cords pulled up, so that they die without wisdom?’
His children are far from safety, and they are
crushed in the gate, neither is there any to deliver them.
His sons are far from safety,
crushed in court
without a defender.
Which doeth great things and unsearchable; marvellous things without number:
the One who does great and unsearchable things, wonders without number.
For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field: and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.
For you will have a covenant with the stones of the field, and the wild animals will be at peace with you.
O that my grief were throughly
weighed, and my
calamity laid in the balances together!
“If only my grief could be
weighed and placed
with my
calamity on the scales.
For the arrows of the
Almighty are
within me, the poison
whereof drinketh up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in
array against me.
For the arrows of the
Almighty have pierced me; my spirit drinks in their poison; the terrors of God are
arrayed against me.
Can that which is unsavoury be eaten without salt? or is there any taste in the white of an egg?
Is tasteless food eaten
without salt, or is there
flavor in the white of an egg?
Is not my help in me? and is wisdom driven quite from me?
Is there any help within me now that success is driven from me?
My flesh is clothed
with worms and clods of dust; my skin is broken, and become
loathsome.
My days are swifter than a
weaver’s
shuttle, and are spent
without hope.
My days are swifter than a
weaver’s
shuttle; they come to an end
without hope.
Then thou scarest me with dreams, and terrifiest me through visions:
Can the
rush grow up
without mire? can the flag grow
without water?
Does
papyrus grow where there is no marsh? Do reeds
flourish without water?
Whilst it is yet in his greenness, and not cut down, it
withereth before any other
herb.
While the shoots are still uncut, they dry up quicker than grass.
He will yet fill your mouth
with laughter, and your lips
with a
shout of joy.
They that
hate thee shall be clothed
with shame; and the dwelling place of the wicked shall come to
nought.
Your enemies will be clothed in shame, and the tent of the wicked will be no more.”
I know it is so of a truth: but how should man be just with God?
“
Yes, I know that it is so, but how can a
mortal be righteous before God?
If he will
contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand.
If one wished to
contend with God, he could not answer Him one time out of a thousand.
Which removeth the mountains, and they know not: which overturneth them in his anger.
He moves mountains without their knowledge and overturns them in His anger.
Which doeth great things past finding out;
yea, and wonders
without number.
He does great things beyond searching out, and wonders without number.
If God will not
withdraw his anger, the proud helpers do
stoop under him.
God does not restrain His anger; the helpers of
Rahab cower beneath Him.
How much less shall I answer him, and choose out my words to reason with him?
How then can I answer Him or choose my arguments against Him?
For he breaketh me
with a
tempest, and multiplieth my wounds
without cause.
For He would
crush me
with a
tempest and multiply my wounds
without cause.
He will not suffer me to take my breath, but filleth me with bitterness.
He does not let me catch my breath, but overwhelms me with bitterness.
Now my days are swifter than a post: they
flee away, they see no good.
My days are swifter than a
runner; they
flee without seeing good.
If I wash myself with snow water, and make my hands never so clean;
If I should wash myself
with snow and
cleanse my hands
with lye,
Then would I speak, and not fear him; but it is not so with me.
Then I would speak without fear of Him. But as it is, I am on my own.
I will say unto God, Do not
condemn me;
shew me wherefore thou contendest
with me.
Thou hast clothed me
with skin and flesh, and hast
fenced me
with bones and sinews.
You clothed me
with skin and flesh, and
knit me together
with bones and sinews.
And these things hast thou
hid in thine heart: I know that this is
with thee.
Yet You concealed these things in Your heart, and I know that this was in Your mind:
Thou renewest thy
witnesses against me, and increasest thine
indignation upon me; changes and war are against me.
You produce new
witnesses against me and multiply Your anger toward me. Hardships
assault me in wave after wave.
Are not my days few? cease then, and let me alone, that I may take comfort a little,
Are my days not few? Withdraw from me, that I may have a little comfort,
A land of darkness, as darkness itself; and of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is as darkness.
to a land of utter darkness, of deep shadow and disorder, where even the light is like darkness.”
Should thy lies make men hold their peace? and when thou mockest, shall no man make thee
ashamed?
For vain man would be wise, though man be born like a wild
ass’s
colt.
But a
witless man can no more become wise than the
colt of a wild
donkey can be born a man!
For then shalt thou lift up thy face
without spot;
yea, thou shalt be
stedfast, and shalt not fear:
then indeed you will lift up your face without shame; you will stand firm and unafraid.
Also thou shalt lie down, and none shall make thee afraid;
yea, many shall make suit unto thee.
You will lie down without fear, and many will court your favor.
No doubt but ye are the people, and wisdom shall die with you.
“Truly then you are the people with whom wisdom itself will die!
He that is ready to slip
with his feet is as a lamp
despised in the thought of him that is at ease.
The one at ease scorns misfortune as the fate of those whose feet are
slipping.
With the ancient is wisdom; and in length of days understanding.
Wisdom is found with the elderly, and understanding comes with long life.
With him is wisdom and strength, he hath counsel and understanding.
Wisdom and strength belong to God; counsel and understanding are His.
Behold, he withholdeth the waters, and they dry up: also he sendeth them out, and they overturn the earth.
If He holds back the waters, they dry up, and if He releases them, they
overwhelm the land.
He looseth the bond of kings, and girdeth their loins
with a
girdle.
He loosens the bonds placed by kings and fastens a belt around their waists.
They
grope in the darkness
without light; He makes them
stagger like drunkards.
Surely I would speak to the
Almighty, and I desire to reason
with God.
Yet I desire to speak to the
Almighty and
argue my case before God.
But ye are forgers of lies, ye are all physicians of no value.
You, however,
smear with lies; you are all worthless physicians.
Hear
diligently my speech, and my declaration
with your ears.
Listen carefully to my words; let my declaration ring in your ears.
Who is he that will
plead with me? for now, if I hold my tongue, I shall give up the ghost.
Withdraw thine hand far from me: and let not thy
dread make me afraid.
Withdraw Your hand from me, and do not let Your terror
frighten me.
He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.
Like a flower, he comes forth, then
withers away; like a fleeting shadow, he does not
endure.
And
dost thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment
with thee?
Do You open Your eyes to one like this? Will You bring him into judgment before You?
Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;
Since his days are determined and the number of his months is with You, and since You have set limits that he cannot exceed,
But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul
within him shall
mourn.
He feels only the pain of his own body and mourns only for himself.”
Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his
belly with the east wind?
“Does a wise man answer
with empty counsel or fill his
belly with the hot east wind?
Should he reason
with unprofitable talk? or
with speeches
wherewith he can do no good?
Should he
argue with useless words or speeches that serve no purpose?
With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.
Both the gray-haired and the aged are on our side— men much older than your father.
Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?
Are the consolations of God not enough for you, even words spoken gently to you?
The wicked man travaileth
with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the
oppressor.
A wicked man writhes in pain all his days; only a few years are reserved for the
ruthless.
He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick
bosses of his bucklers:
Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.
Though his face is covered with fat and his waistline bulges with flesh,
He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.
He will not escape from the darkness; the flame will wither his shoots, and the breath of God’s mouth will carry him away.
Let not him that is
deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.
They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their
belly prepareth
deceit.
But I would
strengthen you
with my mouth, and the moving of my lips should
asswage your grief.
And thou hast filled me
with wrinkles, which is a
witness against me: and my
leanness rising up in me beareth
witness to my face.
You have bound me, and it has become a
witness; my
frailty rises up and testifies against me.
He teareth me in his wrath, who hateth me: he gnasheth upon me with his teeth; mine enemy sharpeneth his eyes upon me.
His anger has
torn me and opposed me; He gnashes His teeth at me. My
adversary pierces me
with His eyes.
They open their mouths against me and strike my cheeks with contempt; they join together against me.
His archers compass me round about, he cleaveth my
reins asunder, and
doth not
spare; he poureth out my gall upon the ground.
His archers
surround me. He pierces my
kidneys without mercy and spills my gall on the ground.
He breaketh me
with breach upon breach, he runneth upon me like a
giant.
He breaks me
with wound upon wound; He rushes me like a mighty
warrior.
My face is foul
with weeping, and my eyelids is the shadow of death;
My face is red
with weeping, and deep shadows ring my eyes;
Also now, behold, my witness is in heaven, and my record is on high.
Even now my witness is in heaven, and my advocate is on high.
Oh that one might
plead for a man
with God, as a man pleadeth for his neighbour!
Oh, that a man might
plead with God as he pleads
with his
neighbor!
Are there not mockers
with me? and
doth not mine eye continue in their
provocation?
Surely mockers
surround me, and my eyes must
gaze at their rebellion.
Lay down now, put me in a
surety with thee; who is he that will strike hands
with me?
Mine eye also is
dim by reason of sorrow, and all my members are as a shadow.
My eyes have grown
dim with grief, and my whole body is but a shadow.
The righteous also shall hold on his way, and he that hath clean hands shall be stronger and stronger.
Yet a righteous one holds to his way, and the one with clean hands grows stronger.
