And she said unto
Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come unto me to call my sin to
remembrance, and to
slay my son?
“O man of God,” said the
woman to
Elijah, “what have you done to me? Have you come to remind me of my iniquity and cause the death of my son?”
And the
woman said to
Elijah, Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in thy mouth is truth.
Then the
woman said to
Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the LORD from your mouth is truth.”
Now there
cried a certain
woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto
Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the LORD: and the
creditor is come to take unto him my two sons to be
bondmen.
Now the wife of one of the sons of the prophets
cried out to
Elisha, “Your servant, my husband, is dead, and you know that your servant feared the LORD. And now his
creditor is coming to take my two children as his slaves!”
And it fell on a day, that
Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great
woman; and she
constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as
oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread.
One day
Elisha went to Shunem, and a prominent
woman who lived there persuaded him to have a meal. So whenever he would pass by, he would stop there to eat.
And she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is an holy man of God, which passeth by us continually.
Then the woman said to her husband, “Behold, now I know that the one who often comes our way is a holy man of God.
And he said to Gehazi his servant, Call this Shunammite. And when he had called her, she stood before him.
And he said to Gehazi his servant, “Call the Shunammite woman.” And when he had called her, she stood before him,
And the
woman conceived, and bare a son at that season that
Elisha had said unto her, according to the time of life.
But the
woman did conceive, and at that time the next year she gave birth to a son, just as
Elisha had told her.
And she called unto her husband, and said, Send me, I pray thee, one of the young men, and one of the
asses, that I may run to the man of God, and come again.
And the
woman called her husband and said, “Please send me one of the servants and one of the
donkeys, that I may go quickly to the man of God and return.”
So she went and came unto the man of God to mount
Carmel. And it came to pass, when the man of God saw her
afar off, that he said to Gehazi his servant, Behold,
yonder is that Shunammite:
So she set out and went to the man of God at Mount
Carmel. When the man of God saw her at a distance, he said to his servant Gehazi, “Look, there is the Shunammite
woman.
And he called Gehazi, and said, Call this Shunammite. So he called her. And when she was come in unto him, he said, Take up thy son.
Elisha summoned Gehazi and said, “Call the Shunammite
woman.” So he called her and she came. Then
Elisha said, “
Pick up your son.”
And as the king of Israel was passing by upon the wall, there
cried a
woman unto him, saying, Help, my lord, O king.
As the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a
woman cried out to him, “Help me, my lord the king!”
And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, This
woman said unto me, Give thy son, that we may eat him to day, and we will eat my son to
morrow.
Then the king asked her, “What is the matter?” And she answered, “This
woman said to me, ‘Give up your son, that we may eat him, and
tomorrow we will eat my son.’
And it came to pass, when the king heard the words of the
woman, that he rent his clothes; and he passed by upon the wall, and the people looked, and, behold, he had
sackcloth within upon his flesh.
When the king heard the words of the
woman, he
tore his clothes. And as he passed by on the wall, the people saw the
sackcloth under his clothes next to his skin.
Then spake
Elisha unto the
woman, whose son he had restored to life, saying, Arise, and go thou and thine household, and
sojourn wheresoever thou canst
sojourn: for the LORD hath called for a famine; and it shall also come upon the land seven years.
Now
Elisha had said to the
woman whose son he had restored to life, “Arise, you and your household; go and live as a foreigner wherever you can. For the LORD has decreed a seven-year famine, and it has already come to the land.”
And the
woman arose, and did after the saying of the man of God: and she went with her household, and
sojourned in the land of the Philistines seven years.
So the
woman had proceeded to do as the man of God had
instructed. And she and her household lived as foreigners for seven years in the land of the Philistines.
And it came to pass at the seven years’ end, that the woman returned out of the land of the Philistines: and she went forth to cry unto the king for her house and for her land.
At the end of seven years, when the woman returned from the land of the Philistines, she went to the king to appeal for her house and her land.
And it came to pass, as he was telling the king how he had restored a dead body to life, that, behold, the
woman, whose son he had restored to life,
cried to the king for her house and for her land. And Gehazi said, My lord, O king, this is the
woman, and this is her son, whom
Elisha restored to life.
And Gehazi was telling the king how
Elisha had brought the dead back to life. Just then the
woman whose son
Elisha had revived came to appeal to the king for her house and her land. So Gehazi said, “My lord the king, this is the
woman, and this is the son
Elisha restored to life.”
And when the king asked the woman, she told him. So the king appointed unto her a certain officer, saying, Restore all that was hers, and all the fruits of the field since the day that she left the land, even until now.
When the king asked the woman, she confirmed it. So the king appointed for her an officer, saying, “Restore all that was hers, along with all the proceeds of the field from the day that she left the country until now.”
And when he was come in, he did eat and drink, and said, Go, see now this
cursed woman, and
bury her: for she is a king’s daughter.
Then
Jehu went in and
ate and
drank. “Take care of this
cursed woman,” he said, “and
bury her, for she was the daughter of a king.”
And he dealt to every one of Israel, both man and
woman, to every one a
loaf of bread, and a good piece of flesh, and a
flagon of wine.
Then he distributed to every man and
woman of Israel a
loaf of bread, a date
cake, and a
raisin cake.
The son of a
woman of the daughters of
Dan, and his father was a man of Tyre, skilful to work in gold, and in silver, in brass, in iron, in stone, and in timber, in purple, in blue, and in fine linen, and in
crimson; also to grave any manner of graving, and to find out every
device which shall be put to him, with thy
cunning men, and with the
cunning men of my lord David thy father.
He is the son of a
woman from the daughters of
Dan, and his father is a man of Tyre. He is skilled in work with gold and silver, bronze and iron, stone and wood, purple, blue, and
crimson yarn, and fine linen. He is experienced in every kind of engraving and can
execute any design that is given him. He will work with your
craftsmen and with those of my lord, your father David.
That
whosoever would not seek the LORD God of Israel should be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or
woman.
And
whoever would not seek the LORD, the God of Israel, would be put to death, whether young or old, man or
woman.
For the sons of
Athaliah, that wicked
woman, had broken up the house of God; and also all the dedicated things of the house of the LORD did they
bestow upon
Baalim.
For the sons of that wicked
woman Athaliah had broken into the house of God and had even used the sacred objects of the house of the LORD for the Baals.
Let now our rulers of all the congregation stand, and let all them which have taken strange wives in our cities come at appointed times, and with them the elders of every city, and the judges thereof, until the fierce wrath of our God for this matter be turned from us.
Let our leaders represent the whole assembly. Then let
everyone in our towns who has married a foreign
woman come at an appointed time, together with the elders and judges of each town, until the fierce anger of our God in this matter is turned away from us.”
If it please the king, let there go a royal commandment from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, that it be not altered, That Vashti come no more before king
Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate unto another that is better than she.
So if it pleases the king, let him issue a royal decree, and let it be recorded in the laws of Persia and Media so that it cannot be
repealed, that Vashti shall never again enter the presence of King
Xerxes, and that her royal position shall be given to a
woman better than she.
And let the
maiden which pleaseth the king be queen instead of Vashti. And the thing pleased the king; and he did so.
Then let the young woman who pleases the king become queen in place of Vashti.” This suggestion pleased the king, and he acted accordingly.
And he brought up Hadassah, that is,
Esther, his uncle’s daughter: for she had neither father nor mother, and the
maid was fair and beautiful; whom
Mordecai, when her father and mother were dead, took for his own daughter.
And
Mordecai had brought up Hadassah (that is,
Esther), the daughter of his uncle, because she did not have a father or mother. The young
woman was lovely in form and appearance, and when her father and mother had died,
Mordecai had taken her in as his own daughter.
And the
maiden pleased him, and she obtained kindness of him; and he speedily gave her her things for
purification, with such things as belonged to her, and seven maidens, which were meet to be given her, out of the king’s house: and he preferred her and her maids unto the best place of the house of the women.
And the young
woman pleased him and obtained his favor, so he quickly provided her with beauty treatments and the special diet. He assigned to her seven select maidservants from the palace and transferred her with them to the best place in the
harem.
Now when every
maid’s turn was come to go in to king
Ahasuerus, after that she had been twelve months, according to the manner of the women, (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, to wit, six months with oil of
myrrh, and six months with sweet odours, and with other things for the
purifying of the women;)
In the twelve months before her turn to go to King
Xerxes, the
harem regulation required each young
woman to receive beauty treatments with oil of
myrrh for six months, and then with perfumes and cosmetics for another six months.
Then thus came every
maiden unto the king;
whatsoever she desired was given her to go with her out of the house of the women unto the king’s house.
When the young
woman would go to the king, she was given whatever she requested to take with her from the
harem to the king’s palace.
All the king’s servants, and the people of the king’s provinces, do know, that
whosoever, whether man or
woman, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law of his to put him to death, except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden
sceptre, that he may live: but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.
“All the royal officials and the people of the king’s provinces know that one law applies to every man or
woman who approaches the king in the inner court without being summoned—that he be put to death. Only if the king extends the gold
scepter may that person live. But I have not been summoned to appear before the king for the past thirty days.”
But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the
foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.
“You speak as a
foolish woman speaks,” he told her. “Should we accept from God only good and not
adversity?” In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.
Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.
“Man, who is born of woman, is short of days and full of trouble.
What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
What is man, that he should be pure, or one born of woman, that he should be righteous?
How then can man be justified with God? or how can he be clean that is born of a woman?
How then can a man be just before God? How can one born of woman be pure?
If mine heart have been
deceived by a
woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour’s door;
Fear took hold upon them there, and pain, as of a
woman in
travail.
As a
snail which melteth, let every one of them pass away: like the untimely birth of a
woman, that they may not see the sun.
Like a
slug that dissolves in its
slime, like a
woman’s
stillborn child, may they never see the sun.
He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children. Praise ye the LORD.
He settles the barren
woman in her home as a joyful mother to her children.
Hallelujah!
To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words;
It will
rescue you from the forbidden
woman, from the stranger with
seductive words
For the lips of a strange
woman drop as an
honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil:
Though the lips of the forbidden
woman drip honey and her speech is smoother than oil,
And why
wilt thou, my son, be
ravished with a strange
woman, and embrace the
bosom of a stranger?
To keep thee from the evil
woman, from the
flattery of the tongue of a strange
woman.
to keep you from the evil
woman, from the smooth tongue of the
adulteress.
For by means of a
whorish woman a man is brought to a piece of bread: and the
adulteress will
hunt for the precious life.
But
whoso committeth
adultery with a
woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.
That they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words.
The
woman named Folly is loud; she is
naive and knows nothing.
A
gracious woman retaineth honour: and strong men retain riches.
Like a gold ring in a pig’s
snout is a beautiful
woman who lacks
discretion.
A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown, but she who causes shame is like decay in his bones.
Every wise
woman buildeth her house: but the
foolish plucketh it down with her hands.
Every wise
woman builds her house, but a
foolish one tears it down with her own hands.
Take his garment that is
surety for a stranger: and take a
pledge of him for a strange
woman.
Take the garment of the one who posts security for a stranger; get
collateral if it is for a foreigner.
It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a
brawling woman in a wide house.
Better to live on a corner of the roof than to share a house with a
quarrelsome wife.
It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a
contentious and an
angry woman.
Better to live in the desert than with a
contentious and ill-tempered wife.
For a
whore is a deep
ditch; and a strange
woman is a narrow pit.
It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, than with a
brawling woman and in a wide house.
Better to live on a corner of the roof than to share a house with a
quarrelsome wife.
Take his garment that is
surety for a stranger, and take a
pledge of him for a strange
woman.
Take the garment of him who posts security for a stranger; get
collateral if it is for a foreigner.
Such is the way of an
adulterous woman; she eateth, and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no wickedness.
This is the way of an
adulteress: She eats and wipes her mouth and says, ‘I have done nothing wrong.’
A wife of noble character, who can find? She is far more precious than
rubies.
Favour is
deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a
woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.
Charm is
deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a
woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
And I find more bitter than death the
woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands:
whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the
sinner shall be taken by her.
And I find more bitter than death the
woman who is a
snare, whose heart is a net, and whose hands are chains. The man who pleases God escapes her, but the
sinner is ensnared.
Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.
While my soul was still searching but not finding, among a thousand I have found one upright man, but among all these I have not found one such woman.
Tell me, O thou whom my soul loveth, where thou feedest, where thou makest thy flock to rest at
noon: for why should I be as one that turneth aside by the flocks of thy companions?
Tell me, O one I love, where do you pasture your sheep? Where do you rest them at
midday? Why should I be like a
veiled woman beside the flocks of your companions?
And they shall be afraid: pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them; they shall be in pain as a
woman that travaileth: they shall be
amazed one at another; their faces shall be as flames.
Terror, pain, and
anguish will seize them; they will
writhe like a
woman in labor. They will look at one another, their faces
flushed with fear.
Therefore are my loins filled with pain: pangs have taken hold upon me, as the pangs of a woman that travaileth: I was bowed down at the hearing of it; I was dismayed at the seeing of it.
Therefore my body is filled with
anguish. Pain grips me, like the pains of a
woman in labor. I am
bewildered to hear, I am dismayed to see.
Like as a
woman with child, that draweth near the time of her
delivery, is in pain, and crieth out in her pangs; so have we been in thy sight, O LORD.
As a
woman with child about to give birth writhes and
cries out in pain, so were we in Your presence, O LORD.
“I have kept silent from ages past; I have remained quiet and restrained. But now I will
groan like a
woman in labor; I will at once
gasp and
pant.
Woe unto him that saith unto his father, What begettest thou? or to the
woman, What hast thou brought forth?
Woe to him who says to his father, ‘What have you
begotten?’ or to his mother, ‘What have you brought forth?’”
Sing, O barren, thou that
didst not bear; break forth into singing, and cry
aloud, thou that
didst not
travail with child: for more are the children of the
desolate than the children of the married wife, saith the LORD.
“
Shout for joy, O barren
woman, who bears no children; break forth in song and cry
aloud, you who have never
travailed; because more are the children of the
desolate woman than of her who has a husband,” says the LORD.
For the LORD hath called thee as a
woman forsaken and
grieved in spirit, and a wife of youth, when thou
wast refused, saith thy God.
For the LORD has called you back, like a wife deserted and wounded in spirit, like the rejected wife of one’s youth,” says your God.
For as a young man marrieth a virgin, so shall thy sons marry thee: and as the
bridegroom rejoiceth over the
bride, so shall thy God
rejoice over thee.
For as a young man marries a young
woman, so your sons will marry you; and as a
bridegroom rejoices over his
bride, so your God will
rejoice over you.
Surely as a wife
treacherously departeth from her husband, so have ye dealt
treacherously with me, O house of Israel, saith the LORD.
But as a
woman may
betray her husband, so you have
betrayed Me, O house of Israel,” declares the LORD.
For I have heard a voice as of a
woman in
travail, and the
anguish as of her that bringeth forth her first child, the voice of the daughter of
Zion, that bewaileth herself, that spreadeth her hands, saying,
Woe is me now! for my soul is
wearied because of murderers.
For I hear a cry like a
woman in labor, a cry of
anguish like one bearing her first child— the cry of the Daughter of
Zion gasping for breath, stretching out her hands to say, “
Woe is me, for my soul
faints before the murderers!”
I have
likened the daughter of
Zion to a comely and delicate
woman.
Though she is beautiful and delicate, I will destroy the Daughter of
Zion.
We have heard the fame thereof: our hands wax feeble:
anguish hath taken hold of us, and pain, as of a
woman in
travail.
We have heard the report; our hands
hang limp.
Anguish has gripped us, pain like that of a
woman in labor.
What
wilt thou say when he shall
punish thee? for thou hast taught them to be captains, and as chief over thee: shall not sorrows take thee, as a
woman in
travail?
What will you say when He sets over you close allies whom you
yourself trained? Will not pangs of
anguish grip you, as they do a
woman in labor?
O inhabitant of
Lebanon, that makest thy nest in the cedars, how
gracious shalt thou be when pangs come upon thee, the pain as of a
woman in
travail!
Ask ye now, and see whether a man
doth travail with child? wherefore do I see every man with his hands on his loins, as a
woman in
travail, and all faces are turned into paleness?
Ask now, and see: Can a male give birth? Why then do I see every man with his hands on his stomach like a woman in labor and every face turned pale?
Behold, I will bring them from the north country, and gather them from the coasts of the earth, and with them the blind and the
lame, the
woman with child and her that travaileth with child together: a great company shall return thither.
Behold, I will bring them from the land of the north and gather them from the
farthest parts of the earth, including the blind and the
lame,
expectant mothers and women in labor. They will return as a great assembly!
How long
wilt thou go about, O thou
backsliding daughter? for the LORD hath created a new thing in the earth, A
woman shall compass a man.
How long will you
wander, O faithless daughter? For the LORD has created a new thing in the land— a
woman will shelter a man.”
Therefore now thus saith the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel; Wherefore commit ye this great evil against your souls, to cut off from you man and
woman, child and
suckling, out of Judah, to leave you none to remain;
So now, this is what the LORD God of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Why are you doing such great
harm to
yourselves by cutting off from Judah man and
woman, child and infant, leaving
yourselves without a
remnant?
O inhabitant of Aroer, stand by the way, and
espy; ask him that fleeth, and her that escapeth, and say, What is done?
Stand by the road and watch, O dweller of Aroer! Ask the man
fleeing or the
woman escaping, ‘What has happened?’
Kerioth is taken, and the strong holds are surprised, and the mighty men’s hearts in Moab at that day shall be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.
Kirioth has been taken, and the strongholds seized. In that day the heart of Moab’s warriors will be like the heart of a woman in labor.
Behold, he shall come up and fly as the eagle, and spread his wings over
Bozrah: and at that day shall the heart of the mighty men of
Edom be as the heart of a
woman in her pangs.
Look! An eagle will
soar and
swoop down, spreading its wings over
Bozrah. In that day the hearts of
Edom’s mighty men will be like the heart of a
woman in labor.
Damascus is waxed feeble, and turneth herself to
flee, and fear hath seized on her:
anguish and sorrows have taken her, as a
woman in
travail.
Damascus has become feeble; she has turned to
flee.
Panic has gripped her;
anguish and pain have seized her like a
woman in labor.
The king of Babylon hath heard the report of them, and his hands waxed feeble:
anguish took hold of him, and pangs as of a
woman in
travail.
The king of Babylon has heard the report, and his hands
hang limp.
Anguish has gripped him, pain like that of a
woman in labor.
With thee also will I break in pieces man and
woman; and with thee will I break in pieces old and young; and with thee will I break in pieces the young man and the
maid;
Zion spreadeth forth her hands, and there is none to comfort her: the LORD hath commanded concerning Jacob, that his
adversaries should be round about him: Jerusalem is as a
menstruous woman among them.
Zion stretches out her hands, but there is no one to comfort her. The LORD has decreed against Jacob that his neighbors become his foes. Jerusalem has become an unclean thing among them.
How weak is thine heart, saith the Lord GOD, seeing thou doest all these things, the work of an
imperious whorish woman;
How weak-willed is your heart, declares the Lord GOD, while you do all these things, the acts of a shameless
prostitute!
And hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath
defiled his neighbour’s wife, neither hath come near to a
menstruous woman,
He does not eat at the mountain or look to the idols of the house of Israel. He does not
defile his
neighbor’s wife or approach a
woman during her period.
Yet they went in unto her, as they go in unto a
woman that playeth the
harlot: so went they in unto Aholah and unto
Aholibah, the
lewd women.
Son of man, when the house of Israel dwelt in their own land, they
defiled it by their own way and by their doings: their way was before me as the uncleanness of a removed
woman.
“Son of man, when the people of Israel lived in their land, they
defiled it by their own ways and deeds. Their
behavior before Me was like the uncleanness of a
woman’s impurity.
Neither shall they take for their wives a widow, nor her that is put away: but they shall take maidens of the seed of the house of Israel, or a widow that had a priest before.
And they shall not marry a widow or a
divorced woman, but must marry a virgin of the descendants of the house of Israel, or a widow of a priest.
Then said the LORD unto me, Go yet, love a
woman beloved of her friend, yet an
adulteress, according to the love of the LORD toward the children of Israel, who look to other gods, and love flagons of wine.
Then the LORD said to me, “Go show love to your wife again, though she is loved by another and is an
adulteress. Love her as the LORD loves the Israelites, though they turn to other gods and offer
raisin cakes to idols.”
The sorrows of a
travailing woman shall come upon him: he is an unwise son; for he should not stay long in the place of the breaking forth of children.
Labor pains come upon him, but he is an unwise son. When the time arrives, he fails to present himself at the opening of the
womb.
Now why
dost thou cry out
aloud? is there no king in thee? is thy counsellor perished? for pangs have taken thee as a
woman in
travail.
Why do you now cry
aloud? Is there no king among you? Has your
counselor perished so that
anguish grips you like a
woman in labor?
