Save that the Holy Ghost witnesseth in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions
abide me.
I only know that in town
after town the Holy Spirit warns me that chains and afflictions
await me.
For I know this, that
after my departing shall
grievous wolves enter in among you, not
sparing the flock.
I know that
after my departure, savage
wolves will come in among you and will not
spare the flock.
Also of your own
selves shall men arise, speaking
perverse things, to draw away disciples
after them.
Even from your own number, men will rise up and
distort the truth to draw away disciples
after them.
And it came to pass, that
after we were
gotten from them, and had
launched, we came with a straight course unto Coos, and the day following unto
Rhodes, and from thence unto Patara:
After we had
torn ourselves away from them, we sailed directly to Cos, and the next day on to
Rhodes, and from there to Patara.
Now when we had discovered
Cyprus, we left it on the left hand, and sailed into Syria, and landed at Tyre: for there the ship was to
unlade her burden.
After sighting
Cyprus and passing south of it, we sailed on to Syria and landed at Tyre, where the ship was to unload its
cargo.
And when we had taken our leave one of another, we took ship; and they returned home again.
And
after we had said our farewells, we went
aboard the ship, and they returned home.
And as we
tarried there many days, there came down from Judaea a certain prophet, named
Agabus.
After we had been there several days, a prophet named
Agabus came down from
Judea.
And after those days we took up our carriages, and went up to Jerusalem.
After these days, we
packed up and went on to Jerusalem.
And they are informed of thee, that thou teachest all the Jews which are among the Gentiles to
forsake Moses, saying that they ought not to
circumcise their children, neither to walk
after the customs.
But they are under the impression that you teach all the Jews who live among the Gentiles to
forsake Moses, telling them not to
circumcise their children or observe our customs.
For the multitude of the people followed after, crying, Away with him.
For the crowd that followed him kept
shouting, “Away with him!”
And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every
synagogue them that believed on thee:
‘Lord,’ I answered, ‘they know very well that in one
synagogue after another I imprisoned and beat those who believed in You.
Then
straightway they departed from him which should have examined him: and the chief captain also was afraid,
after he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.
Then those who were about to
interrogate Paul
stepped back, and the commander himself was
alarmed when he realized that he had put a Roman citizen in chains.
Then said Paul unto him, God shall
smite thee, thou whited wall: for sittest thou to judge me
after the law, and commandest me to be
smitten contrary to the law?
Then Paul said to him, “God will strike you, you
whitewashed wall! You sit here to judge me according to the law, yet you
yourself violate the law by commanding that I be struck.”
And he wrote a letter after this manner:
And he wrote the following letter:
And
after five days
Ananias the high priest descended with the elders, and with a certain
orator named Tertullus, who informed the governor against Paul.
Five days later the high priest
Ananias came down with some elders and a
lawyer named Tertullus, who presented to the governor their case against Paul.
Then Paul,
after that the governor had
beckoned unto him to speak, answered,
Forasmuch as I know that thou hast been of many years a judge unto this nation, I do the more
cheerfully answer for myself:
When the governor motioned for Paul to speak, he began his
response: “Knowing that you have been a judge over this nation for many years, I
gladly make my
defense.
But this I
confess unto thee, that
after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets:
I do
confess to you, however, that I worship the God of our fathers according to the Way, which they call a sect. I believe everything that is laid down by the Law and written in the Prophets,
Now
after many years I came to bring
alms to my nation, and offerings.
After several years, then, I returned to Jerusalem to bring
alms to my people and to present offerings.
And
after certain days, when
Felix came with his wife Drusilla, which was a
Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Christ.
After several days,
Felix returned with his wife Drusilla, who was a
Jewess. He sent for Paul and
listened to him speak about faith in Christ Jesus.
But
after two years Porcius
Festus came into
Felix’ room: and
Felix, willing to
shew the Jews a pleasure, left Paul bound.
After two years had passed,
Felix was succeeded by Porcius
Festus. And wishing to do the Jews a favor,
Felix left Paul in prison.
Now when
Festus was come into the province,
after three days he ascended from Caesarea to Jerusalem.
Three days
after his arrival in the province,
Festus went up from Caesarea to Jerusalem,
And when he had
tarried among them more than ten days, he went down unto Caesarea; and the next day sitting on the judgment seat commanded Paul to be brought.
After spending no more than eight or ten days with them,
Festus went down to Caesarea. The next day he sat on the judgment seat and ordered that Paul be brought in.
After several days had passed, King
Agrippa and
Bernice came down to Caesarea to pay their respects to
Festus.
Of whom I have no certain thing to write unto my lord. Wherefore I have brought him forth before you, and specially before thee, O king
Agrippa, that,
after examination had, I might have somewhat to write.
I have nothing definite to write to our sovereign one about him. Therefore I have brought him before all of you, and especially before you, King
Agrippa, so that
after this inquiry I may have something to write.
Which knew me from the beginning, if they would
testify, that
after the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a
Pharisee.
They have known me for a long time and can
testify, if they are willing, that I lived as a
Pharisee,
adhering to the strictest sect of our religion.
And when we had
launched from thence, we sailed under
Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.
After putting out from there, we sailed to the
lee of
Cyprus because the winds were against us.
And when we had sailed slowly many days, and
scarce were come over against Cnidus, the wind not suffering us, we sailed under
Crete, over against Salmone;
After sailing slowly for many days, we arrived off Cnidus. When the wind
impeded us, we sailed to the
lee of
Crete, opposite Salmone.
And, hardly passing it, came unto a place which is called The fair havens;
nigh whereunto was the city of Lasea.
After we had moved along the coast with difficulty, we came to a place called Fair Havens, near the town of Lasea.
Now when much time was spent, and when sailing was now dangerous, because the fast was now already past, Paul
admonished them,
By now much time had passed, and the voyage had already become dangerous because it was
after the Fast. So Paul
advised them,
Which when they had taken up, they used helps, undergirding the ship; and, fearing lest they should fall into the quicksands,
strake sail, and so were driven.
After hoisting it up, the
crew used ropes to
undergird the ship. And fearing that they would run
aground on the sandbars of
Syrtis, they lowered the sea anchor and were driven along.
But
after long
abstinence Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should have
hearkened unto me, and not have loosed from
Crete, and to have gained this
harm and loss.
After the men had gone a long time without food, Paul stood up among them and said, “Men, you should have followed my advice not to sail from
Crete. Then you would have
averted this
disaster and loss.
And when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave
thanks to God in presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat.
After he had said this, Paul took bread and gave
thanks to God in front of them all. Then he broke it and began to eat.
And when they had eaten enough, they
lightened the ship, and cast out the wheat into the sea.
After the men had eaten their fill, they
lightened the ship by throwing the grain into the sea.
Howbeit they looked when he should have
swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but
after they had looked a great while, and saw no
harm come to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.
The islanders were expecting him to swell up or suddenly drop dead. But after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god.
And it came to pass, that the father of
Publius lay sick of a fever and of a
bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and
healed him.
The father of
Publius was sick in bed, suffering from fever and
dysentery. Paul went in to see him, and
after praying and placing his hands on him, he
healed the man.
So when this was done, others also, which had diseases in the island, came, and were
healed:
After this had happened, the rest of the sick on the island came and were cured as well.
And
after three months we departed in a ship of Alexandria, which had wintered in the isle, whose sign was
Castor and
Pollux.
After three months we set sail in an
Alexandrian ship that had wintered in the island. It had the
Twin Brothers as a
figurehead.
And from thence we
fetched a compass, and came to
Rhegium: and
after one day the south wind
blew, and we came the next day to
Puteoli:
From there we
weighed anchor and came to
Rhegium.
After one day, a south wind came up, and on the second day we arrived at
Puteoli.
And it came to pass, that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together: and when they were come together, he said unto them, Men and brethren, though I have committed nothing against the people, or customs of our fathers, yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.
After three days, he called together the leaders of the Jews. When they had gathered, he said to them, “Brothers, although I have done nothing against our people or the customs of our fathers, I was taken prisoner in Jerusalem and handed over to the Romans.
And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers,
They disagreed among themselves and began to leave after Paul had made this final statement: “The Holy Spirit was right when He spoke to your fathers through Isaiah the prophet:
But
after thy hardness and
impenitent heart treasurest up unto
thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;
But because of your hard and
unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against
yourself for the day of wrath, when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.
There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
There is no one who understands, no one who seeks God.
In what
context was it credited? Was it
after his
circumcision, or before? It was not
after, but before.
Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not
sinned after the
similitude of Adam’s
transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.
Nevertheless, death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who did not sin in the way that Adam
transgressed. He is a pattern of the One to come.
I speak
after the manner of men because of the
infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto
holiness.
I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to escalating wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to
holiness.
For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
For in my inner being I delight in God’s law.
There is therefore now no
condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not
after the flesh, but
after the Spirit.
Therefore, there is now no
condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
so that the righteous standard of the law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
Those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh; but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation, but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it.
For if ye live
after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do
mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.
What then will we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith;
But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness.
but Israel, who pursued a law of righteousness, has not attained it.
But Esaias is very bold, and saith, I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me.
And Isaiah boldly says: “I was found by those who did not seek Me; I revealed Myself to those who did not ask for Me.”
Let us therefore follow
after the things which make for peace, and things
wherewith one may
edify another.
So then, let us pursue what leads to peace and to mutual
edification.
Whensoever I take my journey into Spain, I will come to you: for I trust to see you in my journey, and to be brought on my way
thitherward by you, if first I be somewhat filled with your company.
I hope to see you on my way to Spain. And
after I have enjoyed your company for a while, you can
equip me for my journey.
When therefore I have performed this, and have sealed to them this fruit, I will come by you into Spain.
So
after I have completed this service and have safely delivered this
bounty to them, I will set off to Spain by way of you.
For
after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the
foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.
For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know Him, God was pleased through the
foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.
For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:
Jews demand signs and Greeks search for wisdom,
For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:
Brothers, consider the time of your calling: Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were powerful; not many were of noble birth.
For I would that all men were even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that.
I wish that all men were as I am. But each man has his own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that.
But she is happier if she so
abide,
after my judgment: and I think also that I have the Spirit of God.
In my judgment, however, she is happier if she remains as she is. And I think that I too have the Spirit of God.
But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a
castaway.
No, I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.
Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not
lust after evil things, as they also
lusted.
These things took place as examples to keep us from
craving evil things as they did.
Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?
Consider the people of Israel: Are not those who eat the sacrifices fellow partakers in the altar?
After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had
supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as
oft as ye drink it, in
remembrance of me.
In the same way,
after supper He took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in
remembrance of Me.”
And God hath set some in the church, first apostles,
secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers,
after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments,
diversities of tongues.
And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, and those with gifts of
healing, helping, administration, and various tongues.
Follow
after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may
prophesy.
Earnestly pursue love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy.
After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen
asleep.
After that, He appeared to more than five hundred brothers at once, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen
asleep.
After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles.
Then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles.
But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming.
But each in his own turn: Christ the firstfruits; then at His coming, those who belong to Him.
Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.
Then the end will come, when He hands over the kingdom to God the Father after He has destroyed all dominion, authority, and power.
If
after the manner of men I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what advantageth it me, if the dead rise not? let us eat and drink; for to
morrow we die.
If I fought wild beasts in Ephesus for human motives, what did I gain? If the dead are not raised, “Let us eat and drink, for
tomorrow we die.”
Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and
afterward that which is spiritual.
The spiritual, however, was not first, but the natural, and then the spiritual.
Now I will come unto you, when I shall pass through
Macedonia: for I do pass through
Macedonia.
After I go through
Macedonia, however, I will come to you; for I will be going through
Macedonia.
Wherefore henceforth know we no man
after the flesh:
yea, though we have known Christ
after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more.
So from now on we regard no one according to the flesh. Although we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer.
Now I
rejoice, not that ye were made
sorry, but that ye sorrowed to
repentance: for ye were made
sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.
And now I
rejoice, not because you were made sorrowful, but because your sorrow led you to
repentance. For you felt the sorrow that God had intended, and so were not
harmed in any way by us.
For behold this
selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed
after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you,
yea, what clearing of
yourselves,
yea, what
indignation,
yea, what fear,
yea, what
vehement desire,
yea, what zeal,
yea, what
revenge! In all things ye have approved
yourselves to be clear in this matter.
Consider what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear
yourselves, what
indignation, what
alarm, what longing, what zeal, what
vindication! In every way you have proved
yourselves to be innocent in this matter.
And by their prayer for you, which long after you for the exceeding grace of God in you.
And their prayers for you will express their affection for you, because of the
surpassing grace God has given you.
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:
For though we live in the flesh, we do not
wage war according to the flesh.
Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ’s, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ’s, even so are we Christ’s.
You are looking at outward appearances. If
anyone is
confident that he belongs to Christ, he should remind himself that we belong to Christ just as much as he does.
That which I speak, I speak it not
after the Lord, but as it were
foolishly, in this confidence of
boasting.
Seeing that many glory after the flesh, I will glory also.
Since many are
boasting according to the flesh, I too will
boast.
But I
certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not
after man.
For I
certify to you, brothers, that the gospel I preached was not devised by man.
Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days.
Only
after three years did I go up to Jerusalem to
confer with
Cephas, and I stayed with him fifteen days.
Afterwards I came into the regions of Syria and
Cilicia;
Later I went to the regions of Syria and
Cilicia.
Then fourteen years
after I went up again to Jerusalem with
Barnabas, and took
Titus with me also.
Fourteen years later I went up again to Jerusalem, accompanied by
Barnabas. I took
Titus along also.
But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a
Jew, livest
after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?
When I saw that they were not walking in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to
Cephas in front of them all, “If you, who are a
Jew, live like a
Gentile and not like a
Jew, how can you
compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?”
Are ye so
foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?
Are you so
foolish?
After starting in the Spirit, are you now finishing in the flesh?
Brethren, I speak
after the manner of men; Though it be but a man’s covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth
thereto.
Brothers, let me put this in human terms. Even a human covenant, once it is
ratified, cannot be
canceled or
amended.
And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years
after, cannot
disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.
What I mean is this: The law that came 430 years later does not
revoke the covenant previously established by God, so as to
nullify the promise.
But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.
Before this faith came, we were held in
custody under the law, locked up until faith should be revealed.
But
after that faith is come, we are no longer under a
schoolmaster.
Now that faith has come, we are no longer under a
guardian.
But now,
after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and
beggarly elements,
whereunto ye desire again to be in
bondage?
But now that you know God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you are turning back to those weak and worthless principles? Do you wish to be
enslaved by them all over again?
But he who was of the
bondwoman was born
after the flesh; but he of the
freewoman was by promise.
His son by the slave woman was born according to the flesh, but his son by the free woman was born through the promise.
But as then he that was born
after the flesh
persecuted him that was born
after the Spirit, even so it is now.
At that time, however, the son born by the flesh
persecuted the son born by the Spirit. It is the same now.
In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being
predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things
after the counsel of his own will:
In Him we were also chosen as God’s own, having been predestined according to the plan of Him who works out everything by the counsel of His will,
In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
And in Him, having heard and believed the word of truth—the gospel of your salvation—you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,
Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints,
For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints,
