But he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he should multiply horses:
forasmuch as the LORD hath said unto you, Ye shall henceforth return no more that way.
But the king must not acquire many horses for himself or send the people back to Egypt to acquire more horses, for the LORD has said, ‘You are never to go back that way again.’
According to all that thou desiredst of the LORD thy God in
Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear
again the voice of the LORD my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not.
This is what you asked of the LORD your God at
Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the LORD our God or see this great fire anymore, so that we will not die!”
But if any man
hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up
against him, and
smite him
mortally that he die, and fleeth into one of these cities:
If, however, a man hates his
neighbor and lies in wait, attacks him and kills him, and then flees to one of these cities,
One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.
A
lone witness is not sufficient to establish any
wrongdoing or sin
against a man, regardless of what
offense he may have committed. A matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.
If a false witness rise up
against any man to
testify against him that which is wrong;
If a false witness testifies
against someone,
accusing him of a crime,
And the judges shall make
diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath
testified falsely
against his brother;
The judges shall
investigate thoroughly, and if the witness is
proven to be a
liar who has falsely accused his brother,
And those which remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil among you.
Then the rest of the people will hear and be afraid, and they will never again do anything so evil among you.
When thou goest out to battle
against thine enemies, and seest horses, and
chariots, and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the LORD thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
When you go out to war
against your enemies and see horses,
chariots, and an army larger than yours, do not be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, is with you.
And shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye approach this day unto battle
against your enemies: let not your hearts
faint, fear not, and do not
tremble, neither be ye
terrified because of them;
saying to them, “Hear, O Israel,
today you are going into battle with your enemies. Do not be
fainthearted or afraid; do not be
alarmed or
terrified because of them.
For the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.
For the LORD your God goes with you to fight for you against your enemies, to give you the victory.”
When thou comest
nigh unto a city to fight
against it, then
proclaim peace unto it.
When you approach a city to fight against it, you are to make an offer of peace.
And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war
against thee, then thou shalt
besiege it:
But if they refuse to make peace with you and
wage war
against you, lay siege to that city.
That they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods; so should ye sin against the LORD your God.
so that they cannot teach you to do all the
detestable things they do for their gods, and so cause you to sin
against the LORD your God.
When thou shalt
besiege a city a long time, in making war
against it to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by forcing an
axe against them: for thou mayest eat of them, and thou shalt not cut them down (for the tree of the field is man’s life) to employ them in the siege:
When you lay siege to a city for an extended time while fighting
against it to capture it, you must not destroy its trees by putting an
axe to them, because you can eat their fruit. You must not cut them down. Are the trees of the field human, that you should
besiege them?
Only the trees which thou knowest that they be not trees for meat, thou shalt destroy and cut them down; and thou shalt build bulwarks against the city that maketh war with thee, until it be subdued.
But you may destroy the trees that you know do not produce fruit. Use them to build siege works
against the city that is
waging war
against you, until it falls.
Be
merciful, O LORD, unto thy people Israel, whom thou hast redeemed, and lay not innocent blood unto thy people of Israel’s charge. And the blood shall be
forgiven them.
Accept this
atonement, O LORD, for Your people Israel whom You have redeemed, and do not hold the
shedding of innocent blood
against them.” And the
bloodshed will be
atoned for.
When thou goest forth to war
against thine enemies, and the LORD thy God hath delivered them into thine hands, and thou hast taken them
captive,
When you go to war
against your enemies and the LORD your God delivers them into your hand and you take them
captive,
Thou shalt not see the brother’s ox or his sheep go
astray, and hide
thyself from them: thou shalt in any case bring them
again unto thy brother.
If you see your brother’s ox or sheep
straying, you must not
ignore it; be sure to return it to your brother.
And if thy brother be not
nigh unto thee, or if thou know him not, then thou shalt bring it unto thine own house, and it shall be with thee until thy brother seek after it, and thou shalt restore it to him
again.
If your brother does not live near you, or if you do not know who he is, you are to take the animal home to remain with you until your brother comes seeking it; then you can return it to him.
Thou shalt not see thy brother’s
ass or his ox fall down by the way, and hide
thyself from them: thou shalt surely help him to lift them up
again.
If you see your brother’s
donkey or ox fallen on the road, you must not
ignore it; you must help him lift it up.
And give occasions of speech
against her, and bring up an evil name upon her, and say, I took this woman, and when I came to her, I found her not a
maid:
and he then accuses her of shameful conduct and gives her a bad name, saying, “I married this woman and had relations with her, but I discovered she was not a virgin.”
And, lo, he hath given occasions of speech
against her, saying, I found not thy daughter a
maid; and yet these are the
tokens of my daughter’s
virginity. And they shall spread the cloth before the elders of the city.
And now he has accused her of shameful conduct, saying, ‘I discovered that your daughter was not a virgin.’ But here is the proof of her
virginity.” And they shall spread out the cloth before the city elders.
But unto the
damsel thou shalt do nothing; there is in the
damsel no sin worthy of death: for as when a man riseth
against his neighbour, and slayeth him, even so is this matter:
Do nothing to the young woman, because she has committed no sin worthy of death. This case is just like one in which a man attacks his
neighbor and murders him.
Because they met you not with bread and with water in the way, when ye came forth out of Egypt; and because they
hired against thee
Balaam the son of Beor of
Pethor of
Mesopotamia, to
curse thee.
For they did not meet you with food and water on your way out of Egypt, and they
hired Balaam son of Beor from
Pethor in
Aram-naharaim to
curse you.
When the host goeth forth against thine enemies, then keep thee from every wicked thing.
When you are
encamped against your enemies, then you shall keep
yourself from every wicked thing.
But it shall be, when evening cometh on, he shall wash himself with water: and when the sun is down, he shall come into the camp again.
When evening approaches, he must wash with water, and when the sun sets he may return to the camp.
Her former husband, which sent her away, may not take her
again to be his wife, after that she is
defiled; for that is
abomination before the LORD: and thou shalt not cause the land to sin, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.
then the husband who
divorced her first may not remarry her after she has been
defiled, for that is an
abomination to the LORD. You must not bring sin upon the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.
In any case thou shalt deliver him the
pledge again when the sun goeth down, that he may sleep in his own
raiment, and
bless thee: and it shall be righteousness unto thee before the LORD thy God.
be sure to return it to him by
sunset, so that he may sleep in his own
cloak and
bless you, and this will be credited to you as righteousness before the LORD your God.
At his day thou shalt give him his
hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it; for he is poor, and setteth his heart upon it: lest he cry
against thee unto the LORD, and it be sin unto thee.
You are to pay his wages each day before
sunset, because he is poor and depends on them. Otherwise he may cry out to the LORD
against you, and you will be guilty of sin.
When thou cuttest down thine harvest in thy field, and hast
forgot a
sheaf in the field, thou shalt not go
again to
fetch it: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow: that the LORD thy God may
bless thee in all the work of thine hands.
If you are harvesting in your field and
forget a
sheaf there, do not go back to get it. It is to be left for the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow, so that the LORD your God may
bless you in all the work of your hands.
When thou beatest thine olive tree, thou shalt not go over the boughs again: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow.
When you beat the olives from your trees, you must not go over the branches again. What remains will be for the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow.
When thou gatherest the grapes of thy
vineyard, thou shalt not
glean it afterward: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow.
When you gather the grapes of your
vineyard, you must not go over the vines
again. What remains will be for the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow.
The LORD shall cause thine enemies that rise up
against thee to be
smitten before thy face: they shall come out
against thee one way, and
flee before thee seven ways.
The LORD will cause the enemies who rise up
against you to be defeated before you. They will march out
against you in one direction but
flee from you in seven.
The LORD shall cause thee to be
smitten before thine enemies: thou shalt go out one way
against them, and
flee seven ways before them: and shalt be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth.
The LORD will cause you to be defeated before your enemies. You will march out
against them in one direction but
flee from them in seven. You will be an object of
horror to all the kingdoms of the earth.
Therefore shalt thou serve thine enemies which the LORD shall send
against thee, in hunger, and in
thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of all things: and he shall put a yoke of iron upon thy neck, until he have destroyed thee.
you will serve your enemies the LORD will send
against you in famine,
thirst, nakedness, and
destitution. He will place an iron yoke on your neck until He has destroyed you.
The LORD shall bring a nation against thee from far, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flieth; a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand;
The LORD will bring a nation from
afar, from the ends of the earth, to
swoop down upon you like an eagle—a nation whose language you will not understand,
Moreover he will bring upon thee all the diseases of Egypt, which thou
wast afraid of; and they shall
cleave unto thee.
He will
afflict you
again with all the diseases you
dreaded in Egypt, and they will
cling to you.
And the LORD shall bring thee into Egypt
again with ships, by the way
whereof I spake unto thee, Thou shalt see it no more
again: and there ye shall be sold unto your enemies for
bondmen and
bondwomen, and no man shall
buy you.
The LORD will return you to Egypt in ships by a route that I said you should never see
again. There you will sell
yourselves to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will
buy you.”
And when ye came unto this place, Sihon the king of
Heshbon, and
Og the king of
Bashan, came out
against us unto battle, and we
smote them:
When you reached this place, Sihon king of
Heshbon and
Og king of
Bashan came out
against us in battle, but we defeated them.
The LORD will not
spare him, but then the anger of the LORD and his jealousy shall smoke
against that man, and all the curses that are written in this book shall lie upon him, and the LORD shall
blot out his name from under heaven.
The LORD will never be willing to
forgive him. Instead, His anger and jealousy will burn
against that man, and every
curse written in this book will fall upon him. The LORD will
blot out his name from under heaven
And the anger of the LORD was
kindled against this land, to bring upon it all the curses that are written in this book:
Therefore the anger of the LORD burned
against this land, and He brought upon it every
curse written in this book.
And thou shalt return and obey the voice of the LORD, and do all his commandments which I command thee this day.
And you will
again obey the voice of the LORD and follow all His commandments I am giving you
today.
And the LORD thy God will make thee
plenteous in every work of thine hand, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy land, for good: for the LORD will
again rejoice over thee for good, as he
rejoiced over thy fathers:
So the LORD your God will make you abound in all the work of your hands and in the fruit of your
womb, the offspring of your
livestock, and the produce of your land. Indeed, the LORD will
again delight in your goodness, as He delighted in that of your fathers,
I call heaven and earth to record this day
against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and
cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:
I call heaven and earth as witnesses
against you
today that I have set before you life and death, blessing and
cursing. Therefore choose life, so that you and your descendants may live,
Then my anger shall be
kindled against them in that day, and I will
forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be
devoured, and many evils and troubles shall
befall them; so that they will say in that day, Are not these evils come upon us, because our God is not among us?
On that day My anger will burn
against them, and I will
abandon them and hide My face from them, so that they will be consumed, and many troubles and afflictions will
befall them. On that day they will say, ‘Have not these disasters come upon us because our God is no longer with us?’
Now therefore write ye this song for you, and teach it the children of Israel: put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against the children of Israel.
Now therefore, write down for
yourselves this song and teach it to the Israelites; have them
recite it, so that it may be a witness for Me
against them.
And it shall come to pass, when many evils and troubles are
befallen them, that this song shall
testify against them as a witness; for it shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their seed: for I know their imagination which they go about, even now, before I have brought them into the land which I
sware.
And when many troubles and afflictions have come upon them, this song will
testify against them, because it will not be forgotten from the lips of their descendants. For I know their inclination, even before I bring them into the land that I
swore to give them.”
Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee.
“Take this Book of the Law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, so that it may remain there as a witness against you.
For I know thy rebellion, and thy stiff neck: behold, while I am yet alive with you this day, ye have been
rebellious against the LORD; and how much more after my death?
For I know how
rebellious and stiff-necked you are. If you are already rebelling
against the LORD while I am still alive, how much more will you
rebel after my death!
Gather unto me all the elders of your tribes, and your officers, that I may speak these words in their ears, and call heaven and earth to record against them.
Assemble before me all the elders of your tribes and all your officers so that I may speak these words in their hearing and call heaven and earth to witness
against them.
I will
heap mischiefs upon them; I will
spend mine arrows upon them.
I will
heap disasters upon them; I will
spend My arrows
against them.
They shall be burnt with hunger, and
devoured with burning heat, and with bitter destruction: I will also send the teeth of beasts upon them, with the poison of serpents of the dust.
They will be wasted from hunger and
ravaged by
pestilence and bitter plague; I will send the fangs of wild beasts
against them, with the
venom of vipers that
slither in the dust.
Get thee up into this mountain Abarim, unto mount
Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, that is over
against Jericho; and behold the land of
Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel for a possession:
“Go up into the Abarim Range to Mount
Nebo, in the land of Moab across from
Jericho, and view the land of
Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites as their own possession.
Because ye
trespassed against me among the children of Israel at the waters of Meribah-Kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin; because ye
sanctified me not in the midst of the children of Israel.
For at the waters of Meribah-kadesh in the Wilderness of Zin, both of you broke faith with Me among the Israelites by failing to treat Me as holy in their presence.
And this is the blessing of Judah: and he said, Hear, LORD, the voice of Judah, and bring him unto his people: let his hands be sufficient for him; and be thou an help to him from his enemies.
And concerning Judah he said: “O LORD, hear the cry of Judah and bring him to his people. With his own hands he defends his cause, but may You be a help against his foes.”
Bless, LORD, his substance, and accept the work of his hands:
smite through the loins of them that rise
against him, and of them that
hate him, that they rise not
again.
Bless his substance, O LORD, and accept the work of his hands.
Smash the loins of those who rise
against him, and of his foes so they can rise no more.”
And Moses went up from the plains of Moab unto the mountain of
Nebo, to the top of
Pisgah, that is over
against Jericho. And the LORD shewed him all the land of
Gilead, unto
Dan,
Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount
Nebo, to the top of
Pisgah, which faces
Jericho. And the LORD showed him the whole land—from
Gilead as far as
Dan,
And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over
against Beth-peor: but no man knoweth of his
sepulchre unto this day.
And He buried him in a valley in the land of Moab facing Beth-peor, and no one to this day knows the
location of his grave.
There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor
forsake thee.
No one shall stand
against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so will I be with you; I will never leave you nor
forsake you.
Whosoever he be that
doth rebel against thy commandment, and will not
hearken unto thy words in all that thou commandest him, he shall be put to death: only be strong and of a good courage.
Anyone who rebels
against your order and does not obey your words, all that you command him, will be put to death. Above all, be strong and
courageous!”
That the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon an
heap very far from the city Adam, that is beside Zaretan: and those that came down toward the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, failed, and were cut off: and the people passed over right
against Jericho.
the flowing water stood still. It backed up as far
upstream as Adam, a city in the area of Zarethan, while the water flowing toward the Sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea) was completely cut off. So the people crossed over opposite
Jericho.
At that time the LORD said unto Joshua, Make thee sharp
knives, and
circumcise again the children of Israel the second time.
At that time the LORD said to Joshua, “Make flint
knives and
circumcise the sons of Israel once
again.”
And it came to pass, when Joshua was by
Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over
against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our
adversaries?
Now when Joshua was near
Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in His hand. Joshua approached Him and asked, “Are You for us or for our enemies?”
But the children of Israel committed a
trespass in the
accursed thing: for
Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the
accursed thing: and the anger of the LORD was
kindled against the children of Israel.
The Israelites, however, acted unfaithfully regarding the things devoted to destruction.
Achan son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of what was set apart. So the anger of the LORD burned
against the Israelites.
Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were
accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the
accursed from among you.
This is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies. They will turn their backs and run from their enemies, because they themselves have been set apart for destruction. I will no longer be with you unless you remove from among you whatever is devoted to destruction.
Up,
sanctify the people, and say,
Sanctify yourselves against to
morrow: for thus saith the LORD God of Israel, There is an
accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the
accursed thing from among you.
Get up and
consecrate the people, saying, ‘
Consecrate yourselves for
tomorrow, for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Among you, O Israel, there are things devoted to destruction. You cannot stand
against your enemies until you remove them.
And
Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have
sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:
“It is true,”
Achan replied, “I have
sinned against the LORD, the God of Israel. This is what I did:
So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up
against Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night.
So Joshua and the whole army set out to attack
Ai. Joshua chose 30,000 mighty men of
valor and sent them out at night
And he commanded them, saying, Behold, ye shall lie in wait against the city, even behind the city: go not very far from the city, but be ye all ready:
with these orders: “Pay attention. You are to lie in
ambush behind the city, not too far from it. All of you must be ready.
And I, and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city: and it shall come to pass, when they come out
against us, as at the first, that we will
flee before them,
Then I and all the troops with me will advance on the city. When they come out
against us as they did the first time, we will
flee from them.
And it came to pass, when the king of
Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out
against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he
wist not that there were liers in
ambush against him behind the city.
When the king of
Ai saw the Israelites, he
hurried out early in the morning with the men of the city to
engage them in battle at an appointed place overlooking the Arabah. But he did not know that an
ambush had been set up
against him behind the city.
And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the
ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned
again, and
slew the men of
Ai.
When Joshua and all Israel saw that the men in
ambush had captured the city and that smoke was rising from it, they turned around and struck down the men of
Ai.
And the other issued out of the city
against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they
smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.
Meanwhile, those in the
ambush came out of the city
against them, and the men of
Ai were
trapped between the
Israelite forces on both sides. So Israel struck them down until no
survivor or
fugitive remained.
And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, as well the stranger, as he that was born among them; half of them over
against mount
Gerizim, and half of them over
against mount
Ebal; as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded before, that they should
bless the people of Israel.
All Israel, foreigners and citizens alike, with their elders, officers, and judges, stood on both sides of the ark of the covenant of the LORD facing the
Levitical priests who carried it. Half of the people stood in front of Mount
Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount
Ebal, as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded earlier, to
bless the people of Israel.
And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over
against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the
Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof;
That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one
accord.
they came together to
wage war
against Joshua and Israel.
And the children of Israel
smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had
sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel. And all the congregation
murmured against the princes.
But the Israelites did not attack them, because the leaders of the congregation had
sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. And the whole congregation grumbled
against the leaders.
Therefore the five kings of the
Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of
Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of
Lachish, the king of
Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and
encamped before
Gibeon, and made war
against it.
So the five kings of the
Amorites—the kings of Jerusalem,
Hebron, Jarmuth,
Lachish, and
Eglon—joined forces and advanced with all their armies. They camped before
Gibeon and made war
against it.
And the men of
Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to
Gilgal, saying,
Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the
Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together
against us.
Then the men of
Gibeon sent word to Joshua in the camp at
Gilgal: “Do not
abandon your servants. Come quickly and save us! Help us, because all the kings of the
Amorites from the hill country have joined forces
against us.”
And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee.
The LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them, for I have delivered them into your hand. Not one of them shall stand against you.”
And Joshua said, Roll great stones upon the mouth of the cave, and set men by it for to keep them:
So Joshua said, “Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave, and post men there to guard them.
And all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.
The whole army returned safely to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah, and no one
dared to utter a word
against the Israelites.
And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the LORD do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.
“Do not be afraid or discouraged,” Joshua said. “Be strong and
courageous, for the LORD will do this to all the enemies you fight.”
And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had been
hid, and laid great stones in the cave’s mouth, which remain until this very day.
At
sunset Joshua ordered that they be taken down from the trees and thrown into the cave in which they had hidden. Then large stones were placed
against the mouth of the cave, and the stones are there to this day.
Then Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, unto
Libnah, and fought
against Libnah:
Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Makkedah to
Libnah and fought
against Libnah.
And Joshua passed from
Libnah, and all Israel with him, unto
Lachish, and
encamped against it, and fought
against it:
And Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from
Libnah to
Lachish. They laid siege to it and fought
against it.
And from
Lachish Joshua passed unto
Eglon, and all Israel with him; and they
encamped against it, and fought
against it:
So Joshua moved on from
Lachish to
Eglon, and all Israel with him. They laid siege to it and fought
against it.
And Joshua went up from
Eglon, and all Israel with him, unto
Hebron; and they fought
against it:
Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from
Eglon to
Hebron and fought
against it.
And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir; and fought against it:
Finally Joshua and all Israel with him turned toward Debir and fought against it.
And when all these kings were met together, they came and pitched together at the waters of
Merom, to fight
against Israel.
All these kings joined forces and
encamped at the waters of
Merom to fight
against Israel.
So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him,
against them by the waters of
Merom suddenly; and they fell upon them.
So by the waters of
Merom, Joshua and his whole army came upon them suddenly and attacked them,
Joshua made war a long time with all those kings.
Joshua
waged war
against all these kings for a long period of time.
For it was of the LORD to
harden their hearts, that they should come
against Israel in battle, that he might destroy them utterly, and that they might have no favour, but that he might destroy them, as the LORD commanded Moses.
For it was of the LORD to
harden their hearts to
engage Israel in battle, so that they would be set apart for destruction and would receive no mercy, being

Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh-barnea to
espy out the land; and I brought him word
again as it was in mine heart.
I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh-barnea to
spy out the land, and I brought back to him an
honest report.

From there he marched against the inhabitants of Debir (formerly known as Kiriath-sepher).
Give out from among you three men for each tribe: and I will send them, and they shall rise, and go through the land, and describe it according to the inheritance of them; and they shall come again to me.
Appoint three men from each tribe, and I will send them out to survey the land and map it out, according to the inheritance of each. Then they will return to me
And the men arose, and went away: and Joshua charged them that went to describe the land, saying, Go and walk through the land, and describe it, and come

Shiloh.
As the men got up to go out, Joshua commanded them to map out the land, saying, “Go and survey the land, map it out, and return to me. Then I will cast lots for you here in
Shiloh in the presence of the LORD.”
And the men went and passed through the land, and described it by cities into seven parts in a book, and came
again to Joshua to the host at
Shiloh.
So the men departed and went throughout the land,
mapping it city by city into seven portions. Then they returned with the document to Joshua at the camp in
Shiloh.

Reuben,
From there it curved northward and proceeded to En-shemesh and on to Geliloth facing the
Ascent of Adummim, and continued down to the Stone of Bohan son of
Reuben.
And passed along toward the side over against Arabah northward, and went down unto Arabah:
Then it went on to the northern slope of Beth-arabah and went down into the valley.
