Berean Standard Bible BSB Bible
So Saul took the kingdom over Israel, and fought
against all his enemies on every side,
against Moab, and
against the children of
Ammon, and
against Edom, and
against the kings of Zobah, and
against the Philistines: and
whithersoever he turned himself, he
vexed them.
After Saul had assumed the
kingship over Israel, he fought
against all his enemies on every side—the Moabites, the
Ammonites, the Edomites, the kings of Zobah, and the Philistines. Wherever he turned, he routed them.
And there was
sore war
against the Philistines all the days of Saul: and when Saul saw any strong man, or any
valiant man, he took him unto him.
And the war with the Philistines was fierce for all the days of Saul. So whenever he noticed any strong or
brave man, Saul would
enlist him.
Then Saul struck down the
Amalekites all the way from
Havilah to Shur, which is east of Egypt.
And the LORD sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the
Amalekites, and fight
against them until they be consumed.
and sent you on a mission, saying, ‘Go and
devote to destruction the sinful
Amalekites. Fight
against them until you have
wiped them out.’
And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in
array against the Philistines.
Saul and the men of Israel assembled and camped in the Valley of Elah,
arraying themselves for battle
against the Philistines.
And he stood and
cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in
array? am not I a
Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.
And
Goliath stood and
shouted to the ranks of Israel, “Why do you come out and
array yourselves for battle? Am I not a
Philistine, and are you not servants of Saul? Choose one of your men and have him come down
against me.
If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.
If he is able to fight me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and labor for us.”
Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.
They are with Saul and all the men of Israel in the Valley of Elah, fighting against the Philistines.”
For Israel and the Philistines had put the battle in
array, army
against army.
And Israel and the Philistines
arrayed in formation
against each other.
And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab’s anger was
kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down
hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the
naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle.
Now when David’s oldest brother Eliab heard him speaking to the men, his anger burned against David. “Why have you come down here?” he asked. “And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and wickedness of heart—you have come down to see the battle!”
And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go
against this
Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
But Saul replied, “You cannot go out
against this
Philistine to fight him. You are just a boy, and he has been a
warrior from his youth.”
And I went out after him, and
smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose
against me, I caught him by his
beard, and
smote him, and
slew him.
I went after it, struck it down, and delivered the lamb from its mouth. If it reared up
against me, I would
grab it by its fur, strike it down, and kill it.
Then said David to the
Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a
spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast
defied.
But David said to the
Philistine, “You come
against me with sword and
spear and
javelin, but I come
against you in the name of the LORD of Hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have
defied.
And when Saul saw David go forth
against the
Philistine, he said unto
Abner, the captain of the host,
Abner, whose son is this youth? And
Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell.
As Saul had watched David going out to
confront the
Philistine, he said to
Abner the commander of the army, “
Abner, whose son is this young man?” “As surely as you live, O king,”
Abner replied, “I do not know.”
And Saul said to David, Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give thee to wife: only be thou
valiant for me, and fight the LORD’S battles. For Saul said, Let not mine hand be upon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him.
Then Saul said to David, “Here is my older daughter Merab. I will give her to you in marriage. Only be
valiant for me and fight the LORD’s battles.” But Saul was thinking, “I need not raise my hand
against him; let the hand of the Philistines be
against him.”
And Saul said, I will give him her, that she may be a
snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be
against him. Wherefore Saul said to David, Thou shalt this day be my son in law in the one of the
twain.
“I will give her to David,” Saul thought, “so that she may be a
snare to him, and the hand of the Philistines may be
against him.” So Saul said to David, “For a second time now you can be my son-in-law.”
And
Jonathan spake good of David unto Saul his father, and said unto him, Let not the king sin
against his servant,
against David; because he hath not
sinned against thee, and because his works have been to thee-ward very good:
Then
Jonathan spoke well of David to his father Saul and said to him, “The king should not sin
against his servant David; he has not
sinned against you. In fact, his actions have been highly
beneficial to you.
For he did put his life in his hand, and
slew the
Philistine, and the LORD wrought a great salvation for all Israel: thou sawest it, and
didst rejoice: wherefore then
wilt thou sin
against innocent blood, to
slay David without a cause?
He took his life in his hands when he struck down the
Philistine, and the LORD worked a great salvation for all Israel. You saw it and
rejoiced, so why would you sin
against innocent blood by killing David for no reason?”
And David fled from Naioth in
Ramah, and came and said before
Jonathan, What have I done? what is mine iniquity? and what is my sin before thy father, that he seeketh my life?
Then David fled from Naioth in
Ramah. He came to
Jonathan and asked, “What have I done? What is my iniquity? How have I
sinned against your father, that he wants to take my life?”
And
Jonathan said, Far be it from thee: for if I knew certainly that evil were determined by my father to come upon thee, then would not I tell it thee?
“Never!”
Jonathan replied. “If I ever found out that my father had evil intentions
against you, would I not tell you?”
Then Saul’s anger was
kindled against Jonathan, and he said unto him, Thou son of the
perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of
Jesse to thine own confusion, and unto the confusion of thy mother’s nakedness?
Then Saul’s anger burned
against Jonathan, and he said to him, “You son of a
perverse and
rebellious woman! Do I not know that you have chosen the son of
Jesse to your own shame and to the disgrace of the mother who bore you?
That all of you have
conspired against me, and there is none that sheweth me that my son hath made a league with the son of
Jesse, and there is none of you that is
sorry for me, or sheweth unto me that my son hath
stirred up my servant
against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?
Is that why all of you have
conspired against me? Not one of you told me that my own son had made a covenant with the son of
Jesse. Not one of you has shown
concern for me or revealed to me that my son has
stirred up my own servant to lie in wait
against me, as is the case
today.”
And Saul said unto him, Why have ye
conspired against me, thou and the son of
Jesse, in that thou hast given him bread, and a sword, and hast enquired of God for him, that he should rise
against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?
And Saul asked him, “Why have you and the son of
Jesse conspired against me? You gave him bread and a sword and inquired of God for him so that he could rise up
against me to lie in wait, as he is doing
today.”
Then they told David, saying, Behold, the Philistines fight
against Keilah, and they
rob the threshingfloors.
Now it was reported to David, “Look, the Philistines are fighting
against Keilah and
looting the
threshing floors.”
And David’s men said unto him, Behold, we be afraid here in Judah: how much more then if we come to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?
But David’s men said to him, “Look, we are afraid here in Judah; how much more if we go to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?”
So David and his men went to Keilah, and fought with the Philistines, and brought away their cattle, and
smote them with a great slaughter. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah.
Then David and his men went to Keilah, fought
against the Philistines, and carried off their
livestock, striking them with a mighty blow. So David saved the people of Keilah.
And David knew that Saul secretly practised mischief
against him; and he said to
Abiathar the priest, Bring
hither the
ephod.
When David learned that Saul was
plotting evil
against him, he said to
Abiathar the priest, “Bring the
ephod.”
Wherefore Saul returned from pursuing after David, and went against the Philistines: therefore they called that place Sela-hammahlekoth.
So Saul broke off his pursuit of David and went to meet the Philistines. That is why that place is called Sela-hammahlekoth.
And he said unto his men, The LORD
forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the LORD’S
anointed, to stretch forth mine hand
against him, seeing he is the
anointed of the LORD.
So he said to his men, “The LORD
forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the LORD’s
anointed. May I never lift my hand
against him, since he is the LORD’s
anointed.”
So David stayed his servants with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. But Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.
With these words David restrained his men, and he did not let them rise up against Saul. Then Saul left the cave and went on his way.
Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and some
bade me kill thee: but mine eye
spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine hand
against my lord; for he is the LORD’S
anointed.
Behold, this day you have seen with your own eyes that the LORD delivered you into my hand in the cave. I was told to kill you, but I
spared you and said, ‘I will not lift my hand
against my lord, since he is the LORD’s
anointed.’
Moreover, my father, see,
yea, see the
skirt of thy
robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the
skirt of thy
robe and killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor
transgression in mine hand, and I have not
sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it.
See, my father, look at the corner of your
robe in my hand. For I cut it off, but I did not kill you. See and know that there is no evil or rebellion in my hands. I have not
sinned against you, even though you are hunting me down to take my life.
The LORD judge between me and thee, and the LORD
avenge me of thee: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.
May the LORD judge between you and me, and may the LORD take
vengeance on you, but my hand will never be
against you.
As saith the
proverb of the ancients, Wickedness proceedeth from the wicked: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.
As the old
proverb says, ‘Wickedness proceeds from the wicked.’ But my hand will never be
against you.
After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom
dost thou pursue? after a dead dog, after a
flea.
Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Whom are you pursuing? A dead dog? A
flea?
Now therefore know and consider what thou
wilt do; for evil is determined
against our master, and
against all his household: for he is such a son of
Belial, that a man cannot speak to him.
Now consider carefully what you must do, because
disaster looms over our master and all his household. For he is such a
scoundrel that
nobody can speak to him!”
And it was so, as she
rode on the
ass, that she came down by the
covert of the hill, and, behold, David and his men came down
against her; and she met them.
As
Abigail came riding her
donkey into a mountain
ravine, she saw David and his men coming down toward her, and she met them.
So and more also do God unto the enemies of David, if I leave of all that
pertain to him by the morning light any that pisseth
against the wall.
May God
punish David, and ever so severely, if I let one of Nabal’s men
survive until morning.”
For in very deed, as the LORD God of Israel liveth, which hath kept me back from
hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted and come to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light any that pisseth
against the wall.
Otherwise, as surely as the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, who has restrained me from
harming you, if you had not come quickly to meet me, then surely no male belonging to Nabal would have been left alive by morning light.”
And when David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be the LORD, that hath
pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and hath kept his servant from evil: for the LORD hath returned the wickedness of Nabal upon his own head. And David sent and communed with
Abigail, to take her to him to wife.
On hearing that Nabal was dead, David said, “Blessed be the LORD, who has
upheld my cause
against the reproach of Nabal and has restrained His servant from evil. For the LORD has brought the wickedness of Nabal down upon his own head.” Then David sent word to
Abigail, asking for her in marriage.
And David said to
Abishai, Destroy him not: for who can stretch forth his hand
against the LORD’S
anointed, and be guiltless?
But David said to
Abishai, “Do not destroy him, for who can lift a hand
against the LORD’s
anointed and be guiltless?”
The LORD
forbid that I should stretch forth mine hand
against the LORD’S
anointed: but, I pray thee, take thou now the
spear that is at his
bolster, and the
cruse of water, and let us go.
But the LORD
forbid that I should stretch out my hand
against the LORD’s
anointed. Instead, take the
spear and water
jug by his head, and let us go.”
Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If the LORD have
stirred thee up
against me, let him accept an offering: but if they be the children of men,
cursed be they before the LORD; for they have driven me out this day from
abiding in the inheritance of the LORD, saying, Go, serve other gods.
Now please, may my lord the king hear the words of his servant: If the LORD has
stirred you up
against me, then may He accept an offering. But if men have done it, may they be
cursed in the presence of the LORD! For
today they have driven me away from sharing in the inheritance of the LORD, saying, ‘Go, serve other gods.’
The LORD render to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness: for the LORD delivered thee into my hand to day, but I would not stretch forth mine hand
against the LORD’S
anointed.
May the LORD repay every man for his righteousness and faithfulness. For the LORD delivered you into my hand
today, but I would not stretch out my hand
against the LORD’s
anointed.
And Achish said,
Whither have ye made a road to day? And David said,
Against the south of Judah, and
against the south of the Jerahmeelites, and
against the south of the
Kenites.
who would ask him, “What have you
raided today?” And David would reply, “The Negev of Judah,” or “The Negev of Jerahmeel,” or “The Negev of the
Kenites.”
And it came to pass in those days, that the Philistines gathered their armies together for warfare, to fight with Israel. And Achish said unto David, Know thou
assuredly, that thou shalt go out with me to battle, thou and thy men.
Now in those days the Philistines gathered their forces for warfare against Israel. So Achish said to David, “You must understand that you and your men are to go out to battle with me.”
And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am
sore distressed; for the Philistines make war
against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do.
Then Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” “I am deeply distressed,” replied Saul. “The Philistines are fighting against me, and God has turned away from me. He no longer answers me, either by prophets or by dreams. So I have called on you to tell me what to do.”
Because thou obeyedst not the voice of the LORD, nor executedst his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath the LORD done this thing unto thee this day.
Because you did not obey the LORD or carry out His burning anger
against Amalek, the LORD has done this to you
today.
And David said unto Achish, But what have I done? and what hast thou found in thy servant so long as I have been with thee unto this day, that I may not go fight against the enemies of my lord the king?
“But what have I done?” David replied. “What have you found
against your servant, from the day I came to you until
today, to keep me from going along to fight
against the enemies of my lord the king?”
Then said David, Ye shall not do so, my brethren, with that which the LORD hath given us, who hath preserved us, and delivered the company that came against us into our hand.
But David said, “My brothers, you must not do this with what the LORD has given us. He has protected us and delivered into our hands the raiders who came against us.
Now the Philistines fought
against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount
Gilboa.
Now the Philistines fought
against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before them, and many fell slain on Mount
Gilboa.
And the battle went
sore against Saul, and the archers
hit him; and he was
sore wounded of the archers.
When the battle
intensified against Saul, the archers overtook him and wounded him critically.
And David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy mouth hath
testified against thee, saying, I have slain the LORD’S
anointed.
For David had said to the Amalekite, “Your blood be on your own head because your own mouth has
testified against you, saying, ‘I killed the LORD’s
anointed.’”
Then was
Abner very
wroth for the words of
Ish-bosheth, and said, Am I a dog’s head, which
against Judah do
shew kindness this day unto the house of Saul thy father, to his brethren, and to his friends, and have not delivered thee into the hand of David, that thou chargest me to day with a fault concerning this woman?
Abner was
furious over
Ish-bosheth’s
accusation. “Am I the head of a dog that belongs to Judah?” he asked. “All this time I have been
loyal to the house of your father Saul, to his brothers, and to his friends. I have not delivered you into the hand of David, but now you
accuse me of
wrongdoing with this woman!
And they brought the head of
Ish-bosheth unto David to
Hebron, and said to the king, Behold the head of
Ish-bosheth the son of Saul thine enemy, which sought thy life; and the LORD hath
avenged my lord the king this day of Saul, and of his seed.
They brought the head of
Ish-bosheth to David at
Hebron and said to the king, “Here is the head of
Ish-bosheth son of Saul, your enemy who sought your life.
Today the LORD has granted
vengeance to my lord the king
against Saul and his offspring.”
And the king and his men went to Jerusalem unto the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land: which spake unto David, saying, Except thou take away the blind and the
lame, thou shalt not come in
hither: thinking, David cannot come in
hither.
Now the king and his men marched to Jerusalem
against the Jebusites who inhabited the land. The Jebusites said to David: “You will never get in here. Even the blind and
lame can
repel you.” For they thought, “David cannot get in here.”
And David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up to the Philistines?
wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto David, Go up: for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into thine hand.
So David inquired of the LORD, “Should I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hand?” “Go,” replied the LORD, “for I will surely deliver the Philistines into your hand.”
And David came to
Baal-perazim, and David
smote them there, and said, The LORD hath broken forth upon mine enemies before me, as the breach of waters. Therefore he called the name of that place
Baal-perazim.
So David went to
Baal-perazim, where he defeated the Philistines and said, “Like a
bursting flood, the LORD has
burst out
against my enemies before me.” So he called that place
Baal-perazim.
And when David enquired of the LORD, he said, Thou shalt not go up; but
fetch a compass behind them, and come upon them over
against the
mulberry trees.
So David inquired of the LORD, who answered, “Do not march straight up, but circle around behind them and attack them in front of the
balsam trees.
And the anger of the LORD was
kindled against Uzzah; and God
smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God.
And the anger of the LORD burned
against Uzzah, and God struck him down on the spot for his
irreverence, and he died there beside the ark of God.
And David was displeased, because the LORD had made a breach upon Uzzah: and he called the name of the place
Perez-uzzah to this day.
Then David became
angry because the LORD had
burst forth
against Uzzah; so he named that place
Perez-uzzah, as it is called to this day.
Then Toi sent
Joram his son unto king David, to
salute him, and to
bless him, because he had fought
against Hadadezer, and
smitten him: for Hadadezer had wars with Toi. And
Joram brought with him vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and vessels of brass:
he sent his son
Joram to
greet King David and
bless him for fighting and defeating Hadadezer, who had been at war with Toi.
Joram brought with him articles of silver and gold and bronze,
When
Joab saw that the front of the battle was
against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in
array against the Syrians:
When
Joab saw the battle lines before him and behind him, he selected some of the best men of Israel and
arrayed them
against the Arameans.
And the rest of the people he delivered into the hand of
Abishai his brother, that he might put them in
array against the children of
Ammon.
And he placed the rest of the forces under the command of his brother
Abishai, who
arrayed them
against the
Ammonites.
And
Joab drew
nigh, and the people that were with him, unto the battle
against the Syrians: and they fled before him.
So
Joab and his troops advanced to fight the Arameans, who fled before him.
And when the children of
Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, then fled they also before
Abishai, and entered into the city. So
Joab returned from the children of
Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.
When the
Ammonites saw that the Arameans had fled, they too fled before
Abishai, and they entered the city. So
Joab returned from fighting
against the
Ammonites and came to Jerusalem.
And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and passed over Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in
array against David, and fought with him.
When this was reported to David, he gathered all Israel, crossed the Jordan, and went to Helam. Then the Arameans
arrayed themselves
against David and fought
against him.
And the men of the city went out, and fought with
Joab: and there fell some of the people of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.
And when the men of the city came out and fought
against Joab, some of David’s servants fell, and Uriah the Hittite also died.
And the
messenger said unto David, Surely the men prevailed
against us, and came out unto us into the field, and we were upon them even unto the entering of the gate.
The
messenger said to David, “The men overpowered us and came out
against us in the field, but we drove them back to the entrance of the gate.
Then David said unto the
messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto
Joab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another: make thy battle more strong
against the city, and overthrow it: and
encourage thou him.
And David’s anger was greatly
kindled against the man; and he said to
Nathan, As the LORD liveth, the man that hath done this thing shall surely die:
David burned with anger
against the man and said to
Nathan: “As surely as the LORD lives, the man who did this deserves to die!
Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.
This is what the LORD says: ‘I will raise up
adversity against you from your own house. Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to another, and he will lie with them in broad
daylight.
And David said unto
Nathan, I have
sinned against the LORD. And
Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.
Then David said to
Nathan, “I have
sinned against the LORD.” “The LORD has taken away your sin,”
Nathan replied. “You will not die.
And
Joab fought
against Rabbah of the children of
Ammon, and took the royal city.
Meanwhile,
Joab fought
against Rabbah of the
Ammonites and captured the royal fortress.
And
Joab sent messengers to David, and said, I have fought
against Rabbah, and have taken the city of waters.
Then
Joab sent messengers to David to say, “I have fought
against Rabbah and have captured the water supply of the city.
Now therefore gather the rest of the people together, and
encamp against the city, and take it: lest I take the city, and it be called after my name.
Now, therefore,
assemble the rest of the troops, lay siege to the city, and capture it. Otherwise I will capture the city, and it will be named after me.”
And David gathered all the people together, and went to Rabbah, and fought against it, and took it.
So David assembled all the troops and went to Rabbah; and he fought against it and captured it.
And, behold, the whole family is risen
against thine
handmaid, and they said, Deliver him that
smote his brother, that we may kill him, for the life of his brother whom he
slew; and we will destroy the heir also: and so they shall
quench my coal which is left, and shall not leave to my husband neither name nor remainder upon the earth.
Now the whole clan has risen up
against your
maidservant and said, ‘Hand over the one who struck down his brother, that we may put him to death for the life of the brother whom he killed. Then we will cut off the heir as well!’ So they would
extinguish my one remaining
ember by not preserving my husband’s name or
posterity on the earth.”
And the woman said, Wherefore then hast thou thought such a thing
against the people of God? for the king
doth speak this thing as one which is
faulty, in that the king
doth not
fetch home again his banished.
The woman asked, “Why have you devised a thing like this
against the people of God? When the king says this, does he not
convict himself, since he has not brought back his own banished son?
And as David and his men went by the way, Shimei went along on the hill’s side over
against him, and
cursed as he went, and threw stones at him, and cast dust.
So David and his men proceeded along the road as Shimei went along the ridge of the hill opposite him. As Shimei went, he
yelled curses, threw stones, and
flung dust at David.
And it came to pass, after they were departed, that they came up out of the well, and went and told king David, and said unto David, Arise, and pass quickly over the water: for thus hath
Ahithophel counselled against you.
After the men had gone,
Ahimaaz and
Jonathan climbed up out of the well and went to inform King David, saying, “Get up and cross over the river at once, for
Ahithophel has given this advice
against you.”
So the people went out into the field against Israel: and the battle was in the wood of Ephraim;
So David’s army marched into the field to
engage Israel in the battle, which took place in the forest of Ephraim.
And the man said unto
Joab, Though I should receive a thousand shekels of silver in mine hand, yet would I not put forth mine hand
against the king’s son: for in our hearing the king charged thee and
Abishai and Ittai, saying,
Beware that none touch the young man
Absalom.
The man replied, “Even if a thousand shekels of silver were
weighed out into my hands, I would not raise my hand
against the son of the king. For we heard the king command you and
Abishai and Ittai, ‘Protect the young man
Absalom for my sake.’
Otherwise I should have wrought
falsehood against mine own life: for there is no matter
hid from the king, and thou
thyself wouldest have set
thyself against me.
If I had
jeopardized my own life—and nothing is hidden from the king—you would have abandoned me.”
And
Ahimaaz called, and said unto the king, All is well. And he fell down to the earth upon his face before the king, and said, Blessed be the LORD thy God, which hath delivered up the men that lifted up their hand
against my lord the king.
Then
Ahimaaz called out to the king, “All is well!” And he bowed facedown before the king. He continued, “Blessed be the LORD your God! He has delivered up the men who raised their hands
against my lord the king.”
And, behold, Cushi came; and Cushi said,
Tidings, my lord the king: for the LORD hath
avenged thee this day of all them that rose up
against thee.
Just then the
Cushite came and said, “May my lord the king hear the good news:
Today the LORD has
avenged you of all who rose up
against you!”
And the king said unto Cushi, Is the young man
Absalom safe? And Cushi answered, The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise
against thee to do thee
hurt, be as that young man is.
The king asked the
Cushite, “Is the young man
Absalom all right?” And the
Cushite replied, “May what has become of the young man happen to the enemies of my lord the king and to all who rise up
against you to
harm you.”
But
Amasa took no
heed to the sword that was in
Joab’s hand: so he
smote him
therewith in the fifth rib, and shed out his
bowels to the ground, and struck him not again; and he died. So
Joab and
Abishai his brother pursued after
Sheba the son of Bichri.
And they came and besieged him in
Abel of Beth-maachah, and they cast up a bank
against the city, and it stood in the
trench: and all the people that were with
Joab battered the wall, to throw it down.
The matter is not so: but a man of mount Ephraim,
Sheba the son of Bichri by name, hath lifted up his hand
against the king, even
against David: deliver him only, and I will depart from the city. And the woman said unto
Joab, Behold, his head shall be thrown to thee over the wall.
That is not the case. But a man named
Sheba son of Bichri, from the hill country of Ephraim, has lifted up his hand
against the king,
against David. Deliver him alone, and I will depart from the city.” “Look,” the woman replied, “his head will be thrown to you over the wall.”
And they answered the king, The man that consumed us, and that devised against us that we should be destroyed from remaining in any of the coasts of Israel,
And they answered the king, “As for the man who consumed us and
plotted against us to
exterminate us from existing within any border of Israel,
Moreover the Philistines had yet war again with Israel; and David went down, and his servants with him, and fought
against the Philistines: and David waxed
faint.
Once again the Philistines
waged war
against Israel, and David and his servants went down and fought
against the Philistines; but David became exhausted.
For thou hast
girded me with strength to battle: them that rose up
against me hast thou subdued under me.
You have armed me with strength for battle; You have subdued my foes beneath me.
And that bringeth me forth from mine enemies: thou also hast lifted me up on high above them that rose up against me: thou hast delivered me from the violent man.
who frees me from my enemies. You
exalt me above my foes; You
rescue me from violent men.
These be the names of the mighty men whom David had: The Tachmonite that sat in the seat, chief among the captains; the same was Adino the Eznite: he lift up his
spear against eight hundred, whom he
slew at one time.
These are the names of David’s mighty men: Josheb-basshebeth the Tahchemonite was chief of the Three. He
wielded his
spear against eight hundred men, whom he killed at one time.
And
Abishai, the brother of
Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was chief among three. And he lifted up his
spear against three hundred, and
slew them, and had the name among three.
Now
Abishai, the brother of
Joab and son of Zeruiah, was chief of the Three, and he lifted his
spear against three hundred men, killed them, and won a name along with the Three.
And he
slew an Egyptian, a goodly man: and the Egyptian had a
spear in his hand; but he went down to him with a staff, and
plucked the
spear out of the Egyptian’s hand, and
slew him with his own
spear.
He also killed an Egyptian, a huge man. Although the Egyptian had a
spear in his hand, Benaiah went
against him with a club,
snatched the
spear from his hand, and killed the Egyptian with his own
spear.
And again the anger of the LORD was
kindled against Israel, and he moved David
against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah.
Again the anger of the LORD burned
against Israel, and He
stirred up David
against them, saying, “Go and take a census of Israel and Judah.”
Notwithstanding the king’s word prevailed
against Joab, and
against the captains of the host. And
Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel.
Nevertheless, the king’s word prevailed
against Joab and
against the commanders of the army. So
Joab and the commanders of the army departed from the presence of the king to count the troops of Israel.
Go and say unto David, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things; choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.
“Go and tell David that this is what the LORD says: ‘I am offering you three options. Choose one of them, and I will carry it out against you.’”
