Yea, the
stork in the heaven knoweth her appointed times;
and the
turtle and the
crane and the
swallow observe the time of their coming; but my people know not the judgment of the LORD.
Even the
stork in the sky knows her appointed seasons. The
turtledove, the swift,
and the
thrush keep their time of
migration, but My people do not know the requirements of the LORD.
How do ye say, We are wise,
and the law of the LORD is with us? Lo, certainly in vain made he it; the pen of the
scribes is in vain.
How can you say, ‘We are wise,
and the Law of the LORD is with us,’ when in fact the lying pen of the
scribes has produced a
deception?
The wise men are
ashamed, they are dismayed
and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of the LORD;
and what wisdom is in them?
The wise will be put to shame; they will be dismayed
and trapped. Since they have rejected the word of the LORD, what wisdom do they really have?
Therefore will I give their wives unto others,
and their fields to them that shall
inherit them: for every one from the least even unto the greatest is given to
covetousness, from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely.
Therefore I will give their wives to other men
and their fields to new owners. For from the least of them to the greatest, all are
greedy for gain; from prophet to priest, all practice
deceit.
I will surely
consume them, saith the LORD: there shall be no grapes on the vine, nor figs on the fig tree,
and the leaf shall
fade;
and the things that I have given them shall pass away from them.
I will take away their harvest, declares the LORD. There will be no grapes on the vine, nor figs on the tree, and even the leaf will wither. Whatever I have given them will be lost to them.”
Why do we sit still?
assemble yourselves,
and let us enter into the defenced cities,
and let us be silent there: for the LORD our God hath put us to silence,
and given us water of gall to drink, because we have
sinned against the LORD.
Why are we just sitting here? Gather together, let us
flee to the fortified cities
and perish there, for the LORD our God has
doomed us. He has given us poisoned water to drink, because we have
sinned against the LORD.
We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of health, and behold trouble!
We hoped for peace, but no good has come, for a time of
healing, but there was only terror.
The
snorting of his horses was heard from
Dan: the whole land
trembled at the sound of the
neighing of his strong ones; for they are come,
and have
devoured the land,
and all that is in it; the city,
and those that dwell therein.
The
snorting of enemy horses is heard from
Dan. At the sound of the
neighing of mighty steeds, the whole land quakes. They come to
devour the land
and everything in it, the city
and all who dwell in it.
For, behold, I will send serpents, cockatrices, among you, which will not be charmed,
and they shall
bite you, saith the LORD.
“For behold, I will send snakes among you, vipers that cannot be charmed,
and they will
bite you,” declares the LORD.
Behold the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people because of them that dwell in a far country: Is not the LORD in
Zion? is not her king in her? Why have they
provoked me to anger with their
graven images,
and with strange
vanities?
Listen to the cry of the daughter of my people from a land far away: “Is the LORD no longer in
Zion? Is her King no longer there?” “Why have they
provoked Me to anger with their carved images, with their worthless foreign idols?”
The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.
“The harvest has passed, the summer has ended, but we have not been saved.”
Oh that my head were waters,
and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might
weep day
and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!
Oh, that my head were a spring of water,
and my eyes a fountain of tears! I would
weep day
and night over the slain daughter of my people.
Oh that I had in the wilderness a
lodging place of
wayfaring men; that I might leave my people,
and go from them! for they be all adulterers, an assembly of
treacherous men.
If only I had a traveler’s
lodge in the wilderness, I would
abandon my people
and depart from them, for they are all adulterers, a crowd of faithless people.
And they bend their tongues like their bow for lies: but they are not
valiant for the truth upon the earth; for they proceed from evil to evil,
and they know not me, saith the LORD.
“They bend their tongues like bows; lies prevail over truth in the land. For they proceed from evil to evil, and they do not take Me into account,” declares the LORD.
Take ye
heed every one of his neighbour,
and trust ye not in any brother: for every brother will utterly
supplant,
and every neighbour will walk with slanders.
And they will
deceive every one his neighbour,
and will not speak the truth: they have taught their tongue to speak lies,
and weary themselves to commit iniquity.
Each one betrays his friend; no one tells the truth. They have taught their tongues to lie; they wear themselves out
committing iniquity.
Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold, I will
melt them,
and try them; for how shall I do for the daughter of my people?
Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Behold, I will refine them and test them, for what else can I do because of the daughter of My people?
For the mountains will I take up a
weeping and wailing,
and for the habitations of the wilderness a
lamentation, because they are burned up, so that none can pass through them; neither can men hear the voice of the cattle; both the fowl of the heavens
and the beast are fled; they are gone.
I will take up a
weeping and wailing for the mountains, a
dirge over the wilderness pasture, for they have been
scorched so no one passes through,
and the lowing of cattle is not heard. Both the birds of the air
and the beasts have fled; they have gone away.
And I will make Jerusalem heaps,
and a den of
dragons;
and I will make the cities of Judah
desolate, without an inhabitant.
“
And I will make Jerusalem a
heap of
rubble, a
haunt for jackals;
and I will make the cities of Judah a
desolation, without inhabitant.”
Who is the wise man, that may understand this? and who is he to whom the mouth of the LORD hath spoken, that he may declare it, for what the land perisheth and is burned up like a wilderness, that none passeth through?
Who is the man wise enough to understand this? To whom has the mouth of the LORD spoken, that he may explain it? Why is the land destroyed
and scorched like a desert, so no one can pass through it?
And the LORD saith, Because they have
forsaken my law which I set before them,
and have not obeyed my voice, neither walked therein;
And the LORD answered, “It is because they have
forsaken My law, which I set before them; they have not walked in it or obeyed My voice.
But have walked after the imagination of their own heart,
and after
Baalim, which their fathers taught them:
Instead, they have followed the
stubbornness of their hearts
and gone after the Baals, as their fathers taught them.”
Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will feed them, even this people, with
wormwood,
and give them water of gall to drink.
Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: “Behold, I will feed this people
wormwood and give them poisoned water to drink.
I will
scatter them also among the heathen, whom neither they nor their fathers have known:
and I will send a sword after them, till I have consumed them.
I will
scatter them among the nations that neither they nor their fathers have known,
and I will send a sword after them until I have finished them off.”
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Consider ye,
and call for the
mourning women, that they may come;
and send for
cunning women, that they may come:
This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Take note,
and summon the
wailing women; send for the most skillful among them.
And let them make
haste,
and take up a
wailing for us, that our eyes may run down with tears,
and our eyelids
gush out with waters.
Let them come quickly
and take up a
lament over us, that our eyes may overflow with tears,
and our eyelids may
gush with water.
Yet hear the word of the LORD, O ye women,
and let your ear receive the word of his mouth,
and teach your daughters
wailing,
and every one her neighbour
lamentation.
Now, O women, hear the word of the LORD. Open your ears to the word of His mouth. Teach your daughters to
wail,
and one another to
lament.
For death is come up into our windows, and is entered into our palaces, to cut off the children from without, and the young men from the streets.
For death has
climbed in through our windows; it has entered our fortresses to cut off the children from the streets, the young men from the town squares.
Speak, Thus saith the LORD, Even the carcases of men shall fall as dung upon the open field,
and as the handful after the
harvestman,
and none shall gather them.
Declare that this is what the LORD says: “The corpses of men will fall like dung upon the open field, like newly cut grain behind the
reaper, with no one to gather it.”
But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.
But let him who boasts
boast in this, that he understands
and knows Me, that I am the LORD, who exercises loving devotion, justice
and righteousness on the earth— for I delight in these things,” declares the LORD.
Egypt,
and Judah,
and Edom,
and the children of
Ammon,
and Moab,
and all that are in the utmost corners, that dwell in the wilderness: for all these nations are
uncircumcised,
and all the house of Israel are
uncircumcised in the heart.
Egypt, Judah,
Edom,
Ammon, Moab,
and all the inhabitants of the desert who
clip the hair of their temples. For all these nations are
uncircumcised,
and the whole house of Israel is
uncircumcised in heart.”
Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.
This is what the LORD says: “Do not learn the ways of the nations or be
terrified by the signs in the heavens, though the nations themselves are
terrified by them.
They deck it with silver
and with gold; they
fasten it with
nails and with hammers, that it move not.
They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.
Like scarecrows in a
cucumber patch, their idols cannot speak. They must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them, for they can do no
harm,
and neither can they do any good.”
Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O LORD; thou art great,
and thy name is great in might.
There is none like You, O LORD. You are great, and Your name is mighty in power.
Who would not fear thee, O King of nations? for to thee
doth it
appertain:
forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations,
and in all their kingdoms, there is none like unto thee.
Who would not fear You, O King of nations? This is Your due. For among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like You.
But they are altogether senseless
and foolish,
instructed by worthless idols made of wood!
Silver spread into plates is brought from
Tarshish,
and gold from Uphaz, the work of the
workman,
and of the hands of the founder: blue
and purple is their clothing: they are all the work of
cunning men.
Hammered silver is brought from
Tarshish,
and gold from Uphaz— the work of a
craftsman from the hands of a
goldsmith. Their clothes are blue
and purple, all fashioned by skilled workers.
But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God,
and an
everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall
tremble,
and the nations shall not be able to
abide his
indignation.
But the LORD is the true God; He is the living God
and eternal King. The earth quakes at His wrath,
and the nations cannot
endure His
indignation.
Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens.
Thus you are to tell them: “These gods, who have made neither the heavens nor the earth, will perish from this earth and from under these heavens.”
He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom,
and hath stretched out the heavens by his
discretion.
The LORD made the earth by His power; He established the world by His wisdom and stretched out the heavens by His understanding.
When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens,
and he causeth the vapors to
ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings with rain,
and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures.
When He thunders, the waters in the heavens
roar; He causes the clouds to rise from the ends of the earth. He generates the
lightning with the rain
and brings forth the wind from His storehouses.
Every man is
brutish in his knowledge: every founder is confounded by the
graven image: for his
molten image is
falsehood,
and there is no breath in them.
Every man is senseless
and devoid of knowledge; every
goldsmith is put to shame by his idols. For his
molten images are a
fraud,
and there is no breath in them.
They are vanity,
and the work of errors: in the time of their
visitation they shall perish.
They are worthless, a work to be
mocked. In the time of their punishment they will perish.
The portion of Jacob is not like them: for he is the former of all things; and Israel is the rod of his inheritance: The LORD of hosts is his name.
The Portion of Jacob is not like these, for He is the Maker of all things, and Israel is the tribe of His inheritance— the LORD of Hosts is His name.
For thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will
sling out the inhabitants of the land at this once,
and will distress them, that they may find it so.
For this is what the LORD says: “Behold, at this time I will
sling out the inhabitants of the land
and bring distress upon them so that they may be captured.”
Woe is me for my
hurt! my wound is
grievous: but I said, Truly this is a grief,
and I must bear it.
Woe to me because of my brokenness; my wound is
grievous! But I said, “This is truly my sickness,
and I must bear it.”
My tabernacle is
spoiled,
and all my cords are broken: my children are gone forth of me,
and they are not: there is none to stretch forth my tent any more,
and to set up my curtains.
My tent is destroyed,
and all its ropes are
snapped. My sons have departed from me
and are no more. I have no one left to pitch my tent or set up my curtains.
For the pastors are become
brutish,
and have not sought the LORD: therefore they shall not
prosper,
and all their flocks shall be scattered.
For the
shepherds have become senseless; they do not seek the LORD. Therefore they have not
prospered,
and all their flock is scattered.
Behold, the noise of the
bruit is come,
and a great
commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah
desolate,
and a den of
dragons.
Listen! The sound of a report is coming— a great
commotion from the land to the north. The cities of Judah will be made a
desolation, a
haunt for jackals.
Pour out thy
fury upon the heathen that know thee not,
and upon the families that call not on thy name: for they have eaten up Jacob,
and devoured him,
and consumed him,
and have made his
habitation desolate.
Pour out Your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge You,
and on the families that do not call on Your name. For they have
devoured Jacob; they have consumed him
and finished him off; they have
devastated his homeland.
Hear ye the words of this covenant, and speak unto the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem;
“
Listen to the words of this covenant
and tell them to the men of Judah
and the residents of Jerusalem.
And say thou unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel;
Cursed be the man that obeyeth not the words of this covenant,
You must tell them that this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:
Cursed is the man who does not obey the words of this covenant,
Which I commanded your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, from the iron furnace, saying, Obey my voice, and do them, according to all which I command you: so shall ye be my people, and I will be your God:
which I commanded your forefathers when I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the iron furnace, saying, ‘Obey Me, and do everything I command you, and you will be My people, and I will be your God.’
That I may perform the oath which I have
sworn unto your fathers, to give them a land flowing with milk
and honey, as it is this day. Then answered I,
and said, So be it, O LORD.
This was in order to establish the oath I
swore to your forefathers, to give them a land flowing with milk
and honey, as it is to this day.” “
Amen, LORD,” I answered.
Then the LORD said unto me,
Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah,
and in the streets of Jerusalem, saying, Hear ye the words of this covenant,
and do them.
Then the LORD said to me, “
Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah
and in the streets of Jerusalem, saying: Hear the words of this covenant
and carry them out.
For I earnestly
protested unto your fathers in the day that I brought them up out of the land of Egypt, even unto this day, rising early
and protesting, saying, Obey my voice.
For from the time I brought your fathers out of the land of Egypt until
today, I strongly
warned them again
and again, saying, ‘Obey My voice.’
And the LORD said unto me, A
conspiracy is found among the men of Judah,
and among the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
And the LORD told me, “There is a
conspiracy among the men of Judah
and the residents of Jerusalem.
They are turned back to the
iniquities of their forefathers, which refused to hear my words;
and they went after other gods to serve them: the house of Israel
and the house of Judah have broken my covenant which I made with their fathers.
They have returned to the sins of their forefathers who refused to obey My words. They have followed other gods to serve them. The house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken the covenant I made with their fathers.
Therefore thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape;
and though they shall cry unto me, I will not
hearken unto them.
Therefore this is what the LORD says: ‘I am about to bring upon them a
disaster that they cannot escape. They will cry out to Me, but I will not
listen to them.
Then shall the cities of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem go, and cry unto the gods unto whom they offer incense: but they shall not save them at all in the time of their trouble.
Then the cities of Judah
and the residents of Jerusalem will go
and cry out to the gods to which they have been burning incense, but these gods certainly will not save them in their time of
disaster.
For according to the number of thy cities were thy gods, O Judah;
and according to the number of the streets of Jerusalem have ye set up altars to that shameful thing, even altars to burn incense unto
Baal.
Your gods are indeed as numerous as your cities, O Judah; the altars of shame you have set up—the altars to burn incense to
Baal—are as many as the streets of Jerusalem.’
What hath my beloved to do in mine house, seeing she hath wrought
lewdness with many,
and the holy flesh is passed from thee? when thou doest evil, then thou rejoicest.
What right has My beloved in My house, having carried out so many evil schemes? Can consecrated meat
avert your
doom, so that you can
rejoice?
The LORD called thy name, A green olive tree, fair,
and of goodly fruit: with the noise of a great
tumult he hath
kindled fire upon it,
and the branches of it are broken.
The LORD once called you a flourishing olive tree, beautiful with well-formed fruit. But with a mighty
roar He will set it on fire,
and its branches will be consumed.
For the LORD of hosts, that planted thee, hath pronounced evil against thee, for the evil of the house of Israel
and of the house of Judah, which they have done against themselves to
provoke me to anger in offering incense unto
Baal.
The LORD of Hosts, who planted you, has decreed
disaster against you on account of the evil that the house of Israel
and the house of Judah have brought upon themselves,
provoking Me to anger by burning incense to
Baal.”
And the LORD hath given me knowledge of it, and I know it: then thou shewedst me their doings.
And the LORD informed me, so I knew. Then You showed me their deeds.
But I was like a lamb or an ox that is brought to the slaughter; and I knew not that they had devised devices against me, saying, Let us destroy the tree with the fruit thereof, and let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name may be no more remembered.
For I was like a gentle lamb led to slaughter; I did not know that they had
plotted against me: “Let us destroy the tree with its fruit; let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name may be remembered no more.”
But, O LORD of hosts, that judgest righteously, that triest the
reins and the heart, let me see thy
vengeance on them: for unto thee have I revealed my cause.
O LORD of Hosts, who judges righteously, who examines the heart
and mind, let me see Your
vengeance upon them, for to You I have committed my cause.
Therefore thus saith the LORD of the men of Anathoth, that seek thy life, saying,
Prophesy not in the name of the LORD, that thou die not by our hand:
Therefore this is what the LORD says concerning the people of Anathoth who are seeking your life
and saying, “You must not
prophesy in the name of the LORD, or you will die by our hand.”
Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold, I will
punish them: the young men shall die by the sword; their sons
and their daughters shall die by famine:
So this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “I will
punish them. Their young men will die by the sword, their sons
and daughters by famine.
And there shall be no
remnant of them: for I will bring evil upon the men of Anathoth, even the year of their
visitation.
There will be no
remnant, for I will bring
disaster on the people of Anathoth in the year of their punishment.”
Thou hast planted them,
yea, they have taken root: they grow,
yea, they bring forth fruit: thou art near in their mouth,
and far from their
reins.
You planted them, and they have taken root. They have grown and produced fruit. You are ever on their lips, but far from their hearts.
But thou, O LORD, knowest me: thou hast seen me, and tried mine heart toward thee: pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and prepare them for the day of slaughter.
But You know me, O LORD; You see me
and test my heart toward You.
Drag away the wicked like sheep to the slaughter
and set them apart for the day of
carnage.
How long shall the land
mourn,
and the herbs of every field wither, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein? the beasts are consumed,
and the birds; because they said, He shall not see our last end.
How long will the land
mourn and the grass of every field be
withered? Because of the evil of its residents, the animals
and birds have been swept away, for the people have said, “He cannot see what our end will be.”
If thou hast run with the
footmen,
and they have
wearied thee, then how canst thou
contend with horses?
and if in the land of peace, wherein thou trustedst, they
wearied thee, then how
wilt thou do in the swelling of Jordan?
“If you have raced with men on foot
and they have worn you out, how can you
compete with horses? If you
stumble in a peaceful land, how will you do in the thickets of the Jordan?
For even thy brethren,
and the house of thy father, even they have dealt
treacherously with thee;
yea, they have called a multitude after thee: believe them not, though they speak fair words unto thee.
Even your brothers— your own father’s household— even they have
betrayed you; even they have
cried aloud against you. Do not trust them, though they speak well of you.
They have made it
desolate,
and being
desolate it mourneth unto me; the whole land is made
desolate, because no man layeth it to heart.
They have made it a
desolation;
desolate before Me, it mourns. All the land is laid waste, but no man takes it to heart.
They have sown wheat, but shall
reap thorns: they have put themselves to pain, but shall not profit:
and they shall be
ashamed of your revenues because of the fierce anger of the LORD.
They have sown wheat but harvested thorns. They have exhausted themselves to no
avail. Bear the shame of your harvest because of the fierce anger of the LORD.”
Thus saith the LORD against all mine evil neighbours, that touch the inheritance which I have caused my people Israel to
inherit; Behold, I will
pluck them out of their land,
and pluck out the house of Judah from among them.
This is what the LORD says: “As for all My evil neighbors who attack the inheritance that I
bequeathed to My people Israel, I am about to
uproot them from their land,
and I will
uproot the house of Judah from among them.
And it shall come to pass, after that I have
plucked them out I will return,
and have
compassion on them,
and will bring them again, every man to his
heritage,
and every man to his land.
But after I have uprooted them, I will once again have
compassion on them
and return each one to his inheritance
and to his land.
And it shall come to pass, if they will
diligently learn the ways of my people, to
swear by my name, The LORD liveth; as they taught my people to
swear by
Baal; then shall they be built in the midst of my people.
And if they will
diligently learn the ways of My people
and swear by My name, saying, ‘As surely as the LORD lives’—just as they once taught My people to
swear by
Baal—then they will be established among My people.
But if they will not obey, I will utterly
pluck up
and destroy that nation, saith the LORD.
But if they will not obey, then I will
uproot that nation; I will
uproot it
and destroy it, declares the LORD.”
Thus saith the LORD unto me, Go
and get thee a linen
girdle,
and put it upon thy loins,
and put it not in water.
This is what the LORD said to me: “Go
and buy yourself a linen loincloth
and put it around your
waist, but do not let it touch water.”
So I got a
girdle according to the word of the LORD,
and put it on my loins.
So I bought a loincloth as the LORD had
instructed me,
and I put it around my
waist.
And the word of the LORD came unto me the second time, saying,
Then the word of the LORD came to me a second time:
Take the
girdle that thou hast got, which is upon thy loins,
and arise, go to Euphrates,
and hide it there in a hole of the rock.
“Take the loincloth that you bought
and are wearing,
and go at once to Perath
and hide it there in a
crevice of the rocks.”
So I went,
and hid it by Euphrates, as the LORD commanded me.
So I went
and hid it at Perath, as the LORD had commanded me.
And it came to pass after many days, that the LORD said unto me, Arise, go to Euphrates,
and take the
girdle from thence, which I commanded thee to hide there.
Many days later the LORD said to me, “Arise, go to Perath, and get the loincloth that I commanded you to hide there.”
Then I went to Euphrates,
and digged,
and took the
girdle from the place where I had
hid it:
and, behold, the
girdle was
marred, it was profitable for nothing.
So I went to Perath
and dug up the loincloth,
and I took it from the place where I had hidden it. But now it was ruined—of no use at all.
Thus saith the LORD, After this manner will I
mar the pride of Judah,
and the great pride of Jerusalem.
“This is what the LORD says: In the same way I will ruin the pride of Judah and the great pride of Jerusalem.
This evil people, which refuse to hear my words, which walk in the imagination of their heart,
and walk after other gods, to serve them,
and to worship them, shall even be as this
girdle, which is good for nothing.
These evil people, who refuse to
listen to My words, who follow the
stubbornness of their own hearts,
and who go after other gods to serve
and worship them, they will be like this loincloth—of no use at all.
For as the
girdle cleaveth to the loins of a man, so have I caused to
cleave unto me the whole house of Israel
and the whole house of Judah, saith the LORD; that they might be unto me for a people,
and for a name,
and for a praise,
and for a glory: but they would not hear.
For just as a loincloth clings to a man’s
waist, so I have made the whole house of Israel
and the whole house of Judah
cling to Me, declares the LORD, so that they might be My people for My
renown and praise
and glory. But they did not
listen.
Therefore thou shalt speak unto them this word; Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Every
bottle shall be filled with wine:
and they shall say unto thee, Do we not certainly know that every
bottle shall be filled with wine?
Therefore you are to tell them that this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Every wineskin shall be filled with wine.’ And when they reply, ‘Don’t we surely know that every wineskin should be filled with wine?’
Then shalt thou say unto them, Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will fill all the inhabitants of this land, even the kings that sit upon David’s throne,
and the priests,
and the prophets,
and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, with
drunkenness.
then you are to tell them that this is what the LORD says: ‘I am going to fill with
drunkenness all who live in this land—the kings who sit on David’s throne, the priests, the prophets,
and all the people of Jerusalem.
And I will
dash them one against another, even the fathers
and the sons together, saith the LORD: I will not
pity, nor
spare, nor have mercy, but destroy them.
I will
smash them against one another, fathers
and sons alike, declares the LORD. I will allow no mercy or
pity or
compassion to keep Me from destroying them.’”
Hear ye, and give ear; be not proud: for the LORD hath spoken.
Give glory to the LORD your God, before he cause darkness,
and before your feet
stumble upon the dark mountains,
and, while ye look for light, he turn it into the shadow of death,
and make it gross darkness.
Give glory to the LORD your God before He brings darkness, before your feet
stumble on the
dusky mountains. You wait for light, but He turns it into deep
gloom and thick darkness.
But if ye will not hear it, my soul shall
weep in secret places for your pride;
and mine eye shall
weep sore,
and run down with tears, because the LORD’S flock is carried away
captive.
But if you do not
listen, I will
weep in secret because of your pride. My eyes will overflow with tears, because the LORD’s flock has been taken
captive.
Say unto the king
and to the queen, Humble
yourselves, sit down: for your
principalities shall come down, even the crown of your glory.
Say to the king and to the queen mother: “Take a lowly seat, for your glorious crowns have fallen from your heads.”
The cities of the south shall be shut up,
and none shall open them: Judah shall be carried away
captive all of it, it shall be wholly carried away
captive.
The cities of the Negev have been shut
tight,
and no one can open them. All Judah has been carried into exile, wholly taken
captive.
