And the elders of
Gilead said unto
Jephthah, Therefore we turn again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight against the children of
Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of
Gilead.
They
answered Jephthah, “This is why we now turn to you, that you may go with us, fight the
Ammonites, and become leader over all of us who live in
Gilead.”
And the king of the children of
Ammon answered unto the messengers of
Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from
Arnon even unto
Jabbok, and unto Jordan: now therefore restore those lands again
peaceably.
The king of the
Ammonites answered Jephthah’s messengers, “When Israel came up out of Egypt, they seized my land, from the
Arnon to the
Jabbok and all the way to the Jordan. Now, therefore, restore it
peaceably.”
And the Gileadites took the passages of Jordan before the Ephraimites: and it was so, that when those Ephraimites which were escaped said, Let me go over; that the men of
Gilead said unto him, Art thou an Ephraimite? If he said,
Nay;
The Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan leading to Ephraim, and whenever a
fugitive from Ephraim would say, “Let me cross over,” the Gileadites would ask him, “Are you an Ephraimite?” If he
answered, “No,”
And the angel of the LORD said unto
Manoah, Of all that I said unto the woman let her
beware.
So the angel of the LORD
answered Manoah, “Your wife is to do everything I told her.
And she
wept before him the seven days, while their feast lasted: and it came to pass on the seventh day, that he told her, because she lay
sore upon him: and she told the
riddle to the children of her people.
She
wept the whole seven days of the feast, and finally on the seventh day, because she had pressed him so much, he told her the
answer. And in turn she explained the
riddle to her people.
Then the Philistines said, Who hath done this? And they
answered,
Samson, the son in law of the Timnite, because he had taken his wife, and given her to his companion. And the Philistines came up, and burnt her and her father with fire.
“Who did this?” the Philistines demanded. “It was
Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite,” they were told. “For his wife was given to his companion.” So the Philistines went up and burned her and her father to death.
And the men of Judah said, Why are ye come up against us? And they
answered, To bind
Samson are we come up, to do to him as he hath done to us.
“Why have you attacked us?” said the men of Judah. The Philistines replied, “We have come to arrest
Samson and pay him back for what he has done to us.”
And they spake unto him, saying, No; but we will bind thee fast, and deliver thee into their hand: but surely we will not kill thee. And they bound him with two new cords, and brought him up from the rock.
“No,” they
answered, “we will not kill you, but we will
tie you up securely and hand you over to them.” So they bound him with two new ropes and led him up from the rock.
And they said, Arise, that we may go up against them: for we have seen the land, and, behold, it is very good: and are ye still? be not
slothful to go, and to enter to possess the land.
They
answered, “Come on, let us go up against them, for we have seen the land, and it is very good. Why would you fail to act? Do not
hesitate to go there and take possession of the land!
Then
answered the five men that went to
spy out the country of Laish, and said unto their brethren, Do ye know that there is in these houses an
ephod, and
teraphim, and a
graven image, and a
molten image? now therefore consider what ye have to do.
Then the five men who had gone to
spy out the land of Laish said to their brothers, “Did you know that one of these houses has an
ephod, household gods, a
graven image, and a
molten idol? Now think about what you should do.”
And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going. But none
answered. Then the man took her up upon an
ass, and the man rose up, and
gat him unto his place.
“Get up,” he told her. “Let us go.” But there was no
response. So the man put her on his
donkey and set out for home.
And the
Levite, the husband of the woman that was slain,
answered and said, I came into Gibeah that belongeth to Benjamin, I and my
concubine, to
lodge.
So the
Levite, the husband of the murdered woman,
answered: “I and my
concubine came to Gibeah in Benjamin to
spend the night.
(And the children of Israel went up and
wept before the LORD until even, and asked counsel of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up again to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother? And the LORD said, Go up against him.)
They went up and
wept before the LORD until evening, inquiring of Him, “Should we again draw near for battle against our brothers the Benjamites?” And the LORD
answered, “Go up against them.”
And
Phinehas, the son of
Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days,) saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease? And the LORD said, Go up; for to
morrow I will deliver them into thine hand.
and
Phinehas son of
Eleazar, the son of Aaron, served before it.) The Israelites asked, “Should we again go out to battle against our brothers the Benjamites, or should we stop?” The LORD
answered, “Fight, for
tomorrow I will deliver them into your hand.”
And behold, Boaz came from
Bethlehem, and said unto the reapers, The LORD be with you. And they
answered him, The LORD
bless thee.
Just then Boaz arrived from
Bethlehem and said to the harvesters, “The LORD be with you.” “The LORD
bless you,” they replied.
And the servant that was set over the reapers
answered and said, It is the
Moabitish damsel that came back with
Naomi out of the country of Moab:
And Boaz
answered and said unto her, It hath fully been shewed me, all that thou hast done unto thy mother in law since the death of thine husband: and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother, and the land of thy
nativity, and art come unto a people which thou knewest not
heretofore.
Boaz replied, “I have been made fully aware of all you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband, how you left your father and mother and the land of your birth, and how you came to a people you did not know before.
And she said unto her, All that thou sayest unto me I will do.
“I will do everything you say,”
Ruth answered.
“Who are you?” he asked. “I am your servant
Ruth,” she replied. “Spread the corner of your garment over me, for you are a
kinsman-
redeemer.”
And
Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have
drunken neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD.
“No, my lord,”
Hannah replied. “I am a woman
oppressed in spirit. I have not had any wine or strong drink, but I have poured out my soul before the LORD.
Then
Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.
“Go in peace,”
Eli replied, “and may the God of Israel grant the petition you have asked of Him.”
And if any man said unto him, Let them not fail to burn the fat presently, and then take as much as thy soul desireth; then he would
answer him,
Nay; but thou shalt give it me now: and if not, I will take it by force.
And if any man said to him, “The fat must be burned first; then you may take whatever you want,” the servant would reply, “No, you must give it to me right now. If you refuse, I will take it by force!”
That the LORD called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I.
Then the LORD called to Samuel, and he answered, “Here I am.”
And the LORD called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to
Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou
didst call me. And he
answered, I called not, my son; lie down again.
Once again the LORD called, “Samuel!” So Samuel got up, went to
Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you have called me.” “My son, I did not call,”
Eli replied. “Go back and lie down.”
And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.
Then the LORD came and stood there, calling as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel
answered, “Speak, for Your servant is
listening.”
Then
Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. And he
answered, Here am I.
but
Eli called to him and said, “Samuel, my son.” “Here I am,”
answered Samuel.
And the
messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also,
Hophni and
Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.
The
messenger answered, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been a great slaughter among the people. Your two sons,
Hophni and
Phinehas, are both dead, and the ark of God has been captured.”
And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.
As she was dying, the women attending to her said, “Do not be afraid, for you have given birth to a son!” But she did not
respond or pay any
heed.
They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they
answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto
Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about thither.
So they called together all the rulers of the Philistines and asked, “What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?” “It must be moved to
Gath,” they replied. So they carried away the ark of the God of Israel.
Then said they, What shall be the
trespass offering which we shall return to him? They
answered, Five golden
emerods, and five golden
mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines: for one plague was on you all, and on your lords.
“What guilt offering should we send back to Him?” asked the Philistines. “Five gold tumors and five gold rats,” they said, “according to the number of rulers of the Philistines, since the same plague has struck both you and your rulers.
And Samuel took a
sucking lamb, and offered it for a burnt offering wholly unto the LORD: and Samuel
cried unto the LORD for Israel; and the LORD heard him.
Then Samuel took a
suckling lamb and offered it as a whole burnt offering to the LORD. He
cried out to the LORD on behalf of Israel, and the LORD
answered him.
And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day.
When that day comes, you will
beg for relief from the king you have chosen, but the LORD will not
answer you on that day.”
And the servant
answered Saul again, and said, Behold, I have here at hand the fourth part of a
shekel of silver: that will I give to the man of God, to tell us our way.
The servant
answered him again. “Look,” he said, “I have here in my hand a quarter
shekel of silver. I will give it to the man of God, and he will tell us our way.”
And they
answered them, and said, He is; behold, he is before you: make
haste now, for he came to day to the city; for there is a sacrifice of the people to day in the high place:
“
Yes, he is
ahead of you,” they
answered. “
Hurry now, for
today he has come to the city because the people have a sacrifice on the high place.
And Samuel
answered Saul, and said, I am the
seer: go up before me unto the high place; for ye shall eat with me to day, and to
morrow I will let thee go, and will tell thee all that is in thine heart.
“I am the
seer,” Samuel replied. “Go up before me to the high place, for you shall eat with me
today. And when I send you off in the morning, I will tell you all that is in your heart.
And Saul
answered and said, Am not I a
Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? wherefore then speakest thou so to me?
Saul replied, “Am I not a
Benjamite from the smallest tribe of Israel, and is not my clan the least of all the clans of Benjamin? So why would you say such a thing to me?”
And one of the same place
answered and said, But who is their father? Therefore it became a
proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets?
Then a man who lived there replied, “And who is their father?” So the saying became a
proverb: “Is Saul also among the prophets?”
Therefore they enquired of the LORD further, if the man should yet come thither. And the LORD
answered, Behold, he hath
hid himself among the stuff.
So again they inquired of the LORD, “Has the man come here yet?” And the LORD replied, “Behold, he has hidden himself among the
baggage.”
And Nahash the
Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.
But Nahash the
Ammonite replied, “I will make a treaty with you on one condition, that I may put out
everyone’s right eye and bring reproach upon all Israel.”
And he said unto them, The LORD is witness against you, and his
anointed is witness this day, that ye have not found ought in my hand. And they
answered, He is witness.
Samuel said to them, “The LORD is a witness against you, and His
anointed is a witness
today, that you have not found anything in my hand.” “He is a witness,” they replied.
And the men of the garrison
answered Jonathan and his armourbearer, and said, Come up to us, and we will
shew you a thing. And
Jonathan said unto his armourbearer, Come up after me: for the LORD hath delivered them into the hand of Israel.
So the men of the outpost called out to
Jonathan and his
armor-bearer, “Come on up, and we will teach you a
lesson!” “Follow me,”
Jonathan told his
armor-bearer, “for the LORD has delivered them into the hand of Israel.”
Then
answered one of the people, and said, Thy father straitly charged the people with an oath, saying,
Cursed be the man that eateth any food this day. And the people were
faint.
Then one of the soldiers told him, “Your father bound the troops with a solemn oath, saying, ‘
Cursed is the man who eats food
today.’ That is why the people are
faint.”
And Saul asked counsel of God, Shall I go down after the Philistines?
wilt thou deliver them into the hand of Israel? But he
answered him not that day.
So Saul inquired of God, “Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will You give them into the hand of Israel?” But God did not answer him that day.
For, as the LORD liveth, which saveth Israel, though it be in
Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. But there was not a man among all the people that
answered him.
As surely as the LORD who saves Israel lives, even if it is my son
Jonathan, he must die!” But not one of the troops said a word.
Therefore Saul said unto the LORD God of Israel, Give a perfect lot. And Saul and
Jonathan were taken: but the people escaped.
So Saul said to the LORD, the God of Israel, “Why have You not
answered Your servant this day? If the fault is with me or my son
Jonathan,
respond with
Urim; but if the fault is with the men of Israel,
respond with
Thummim.” And
Jonathan and Saul were selected, but the people were cleared of the charge.
And Saul
answered, God do so and more also: for thou shalt surely die,
Jonathan.
And Saul declared, “May God
punish me, and ever so severely, if you,
Jonathan, do not surely die!”
And Saul said, They have brought them from the
Amalekites: for the people
spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.
Saul
answered, “The troops brought them from the
Amalekites; they
spared the best sheep and cattle to sacrifice to the LORD your God, but the rest we devoted to destruction.”
And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the LORD said, Take an
heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the LORD.
“How can I go?” Samuel asked. “Saul will hear of it and kill me!” The LORD
answered, “Take a
heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.’
Then
answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of
Jesse the
Bethlehemite, that is
cunning in playing, and a mighty
valiant man, and a man of war, and
prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him.
One of the servants
answered, “I have seen a son of
Jesse of
Bethlehem who knows how to play the
harp. He is a mighty man of
valor, a
warrior,
eloquent and handsome, and the LORD is with him.”
And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.
The people told him about the offer, saying, “That is what will be done for the man who kills him.”
And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.
Then he turned from him toward another and asked about the offer, and those people answered him just as the first ones had answered.
And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, thou young man? And David
answered, I am the son of thy servant
Jesse the
Bethlehemite.
“Whose son are you, young man?” asked Saul. “I am the son of your servant
Jesse of
Bethlehem,” David replied.
And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.
And as the women danced, they
sang out: “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.”
And Saul said unto Michal, Why hast thou
deceived me so, and sent away mine enemy, that he is escaped? And Michal
answered Saul, He said unto me, Let me go; why should I kill thee?
And Saul said to Michal, “Why did you
deceive me like this? You sent my enemy away and he has escaped!” Michal replied, “He said to me, ‘Help me get away, or I will kill you!’”
Then said David to
Jonathan, Who shall tell me? or what if thy father
answer thee roughly?
Then David asked
Jonathan, “Who will tell me if your father
answers you harshly?”
And
Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said unto him, Wherefore shall he be slain? what hath he done?
“Why must he be put to death?”
Jonathan replied. “What has he done?”
And the priest
answered David, and said, There is no common bread under mine hand, but there is
hallowed bread; if the young men have kept themselves at least from women.
“There is no common bread on hand,” the priest replied, “but there is some consecrated bread—provided that the young men have kept themselves from women.”
And David
answered the priest, and said unto him, Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days, since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in a manner common,
yea, though it were
sanctified this day in the vessel.
David
answered, “Women have indeed been kept from us, as is usual when I set out. And the
equipment of the young men is holy, as it is even on common missions, and all the more at this time.”
Then
answered Doeg the
Edomite, which was set over the servants of Saul, and said, I saw the son of
Jesse coming to
Nob, to
Ahimelech the son of Ahitub.
But Doeg the
Edomite, who had stationed himself with Saul’s servants,
answered: “I saw the son of
Jesse come to
Ahimelech son of Ahitub at
Nob.
And Saul said, Hear now, thou son of Ahitub. And he answered, Here I am, my lord.
“
Listen now, son of Ahitub,” said Saul. “Here I am, my lord,” he replied.
Then
Ahimelech answered the king, and said, And who is so faithful among all thy servants as David, which is the king’s son in law, and goeth at thy
bidding, and is honourable in thine house?
Ahimelech answered the king, “Who among all your servants is as faithful as David, the king’s son-in-law, the captain of your
bodyguard who is honored in your house?
Then David enquired of the LORD yet again. And the LORD answered him and said, Arise, go down to Keilah; for I will deliver the Philistines into thine hand.
Once again, David inquired of the LORD, and the LORD answered him: “Go at once to Keilah, for I will deliver the Philistines into your hand.”
And Nabal
answered David’s servants, and said, Who is David? and who is the son of
Jesse? there be many servants now a days that break away every man from his master.
But Nabal asked them, “Who is David? Who is this son of
Jesse? Many servants these days are breaking away from their masters.
Then
answered David and said to
Ahimelech the Hittite, and to
Abishai the son of Zeruiah, brother to
Joab, saying, Who will go down with me to Saul to the camp? And
Abishai said, I will go down with thee.
And David asked
Ahimelech the Hittite and
Abishai son of Zeruiah,
Joab’s brother, “Who will go down with me to Saul in the camp?” “I will go with you,”
answered Abishai.
And David
cried to the people, and to
Abner the son of
Ner, saying,
Answerest thou not,
Abner? Then
Abner answered and said, Who art thou that criest to the king?
And David
shouted to the troops and to
Abner son of
Ner, “Will you not
answer me,
Abner?” “Who calls to the king?”
Abner replied.
And David
answered and said, Behold the king’s
spear! and let one of the young men come over and
fetch it.
“Here is the king’s
spear,” David
answered. “Let one of the young men come over and get it.
And when Saul enquired of the LORD, the LORD
answered him not, neither by dreams nor by
Urim, nor by prophets.
He inquired of the LORD, but the LORD did not
answer him by dreams or
Urim or prophets.
And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: for what sawest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth.
“Do not be afraid,” the king replied. “What do you see?” “I see a god coming up out of the earth,” the woman answered.
And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul
answered, I am
sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and
answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do.
Then Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” “I am deeply distressed,” replied Saul. “The Philistines are fighting against me, and God has turned away from me. He no longer answers me, either by prophets or by dreams. So I have called on you to tell me what to do.”
And Achish answered and said to David, I know that thou art good in my sight, as an angel of God: notwithstanding the princes of the Philistines have said, He shall not go up with us to the battle.
Achish replied, “I know that you are as pleasing in my sight as an angel of God. But the commanders of the Philistines have said, ‘He must not go into battle with us.’
And David enquired at the LORD, saying, Shall I pursue after this
troop? shall I overtake them? And he
answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all.
and David inquired of the LORD: “Should I pursue these raiders? Will I overtake them?” “Pursue them,” the LORD replied, “for you will surely overtake them and
rescue the
captives.”
Then
answered all the wicked men and men of
Belial, of those that went with David, and said, Because they went not with us, we will not give them ought of the
spoil that we have recovered, save to every man his wife and his children, that they may lead them away, and depart.
but all the wicked and worthless men among those who had gone with David said, “Because they did not go with us, we will not share with them the
plunder we recovered, except for each man’s wife and children. They may take them and go.”
And David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he
answered, That the people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and
Jonathan his son are dead also.
“What was the outcome?” David asked. “Please tell me.” “The troops fled from the battle,” he replied. “Many of them fell and died. And Saul and his son
Jonathan are also dead.”
And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called unto me. And I answered, Here am I.
When he turned around and saw me, he called out and I answered, ‘Here I am!’
And he said unto me, Who art thou? And I answered him, I am an Amalekite.
‘Who are you?’ he asked. So I told him, ‘I am an Amalekite.’
And David said unto the young man that told him, Whence art thou? And he answered, I am the son of a stranger, an Amalekite.
And David inquired of the young man who had brought him the report, “Where are you from?” “I am the son of a foreigner,” he answered. “I am an Amalekite.”
And it came to pass after this, that David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the LORD said unto him, Go up. And David said,
Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto
Hebron.
Some time later, David inquired of the LORD, “Should I go up to one of the towns of Judah?” “Go up,” the LORD
answered. Then David asked, “Where should I go?” “To
Hebron,” replied the LORD.
Then
Abner looked behind him, and said, Art thou
Asahel? And he
answered, I am.
And he could not
answer Abner a word again, because he feared him.
And for fear of
Abner,
Ish-bosheth did not
dare to say another word to him.
And David
answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of
Rimmon the Beerothite, and said unto them, As the LORD liveth, who hath redeemed my soul out of all
adversity,
But David
answered Rechab and his brother Baanah, the sons of
Rimmon the Beerothite, “As surely as the LORD lives, who has redeemed my life from all distress,
And when David enquired of the LORD, he said, Thou shalt not go up; but
fetch a compass behind them, and come upon them over against the
mulberry trees.
So David inquired of the LORD, who
answered, “Do not march straight up, but circle around behind them and attack them in front of the
balsam trees.
And the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may
shew the kindness of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king,
Jonathan hath yet a son, which is
lame on his feet.
So the king asked, “Is there
anyone left of Saul’s family to whom I can show the kindness of God?” Ziba
answered, “There is still
Jonathan’s son, who is
lame in both feet.”
Now when Mephibosheth, the son of
Jonathan, the son of Saul, was come unto David, he fell on his face, and did reverence. And David said, Mephibosheth. And he
answered, Behold thy servant!
And when Mephibosheth son of
Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to David, he fell facedown in reverence. Then David said, “Mephibosheth!” “I am your servant,” he replied.
And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah,
abide in tents; and my lord
Joab, and the servants of my lord, are
encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.
Uriah
answered, “The ark and Israel and Judah are dwelling in tents, and my master
Joab and his soldiers are camped in the open field. How can I go to my house to eat and drink and sleep with my wife? As surely as you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do such a thing!”
And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and
wept: for I said, Who can tell whether GOD will be
gracious to me, that the child may live?
David
answered, “While the child was alive, I fasted and
wept, for I said, ‘Who knows? The LORD may be
gracious to me and let him live.’
And she
answered him,
Nay, my brother, do not force me; for no such thing ought to be done in Israel: do not thou this folly.
“No, my brother!” she
cried. “Do not
humiliate me, for such a thing should never be done in Israel. Do not do this disgraceful thing!
And Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s brother,
answered and said, Let not my lord suppose that they have slain all the young men the king’s sons; for Amnon only is dead: for by the appointment of
Absalom this hath been determined from the day that he forced his sister Tamar.
But Jonadab, the son of David’s brother Shimeah, spoke up: “My lord must not think they have killed all the sons of the king, for only Amnon is dead. In fact,
Absalom has
planned this since the day Amnon
violated his sister Tamar.
And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, I am indeed a widow woman, and mine husband is dead.
“What troubles you?” the king asked her. “Indeed,” she said, “I am a widow, for my husband is dead.
Then the king answered and said unto the woman, Hide not from me, I pray thee, the thing that I shall ask thee. And the woman said, Let my lord the king now speak.
Then the king said to the woman, “I am going to ask you something; do not
conceal it from me!” “Let my lord the king speak,” she replied.
And the king said, Is not the hand of
Joab with thee in all this? And the woman
answered and said, As thy soul liveth, my lord the king, none can turn to the right hand or to the left from ought that my lord the king hath spoken: for thy servant
Joab, he
bade me, and he put all these words in the mouth of thine
handmaid:
So the king asked, “Is the hand of
Joab behind all this?” The woman
answered, “As surely as you live, my lord the king, no one can turn to the right or to the left from anything that my lord the king says.
Yes, your servant
Joab is the one who gave me orders; he told your
maidservant exactly what to say.
And
Absalom answered Joab, Behold, I sent unto thee, saying, Come
hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say, Wherefore am I come from Geshur? it had been good for me to have been there still: now therefore let me see the king’s face; and if there be any iniquity in me, let him kill me.
“Look,” said
Absalom, “I sent for you and said, ‘Come here. I want to send you to the king to ask: Why have I come back from Geshur? It would be better for me if I were still there.’ So now, let me see the king’s face, and if there is iniquity in me, let him kill me.”
And Ittai answered the king, and said, As the LORD liveth, and as my lord the king liveth, surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also will thy servant be.
But Ittai answered the king, “As surely as the LORD lives, and as my lord the king lives, wherever my lord the king may be, whether it means life or death, there will your servant be!”
And the king said, And where is thy master’s son? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he abideth at Jerusalem: for he said,
Today shall the house of Israel restore me the kingdom of my father.
“Where is your master’s grandson?” asked the king. And Ziba
answered, “Indeed, he is staying in Jerusalem, for he has said, ‘
Today, the house of Israel will restore to me the kingdom of my
grandfather.’”
And Hushai said unto
Absalom,
Nay; but whom the LORD, and this people, and all the men of Israel, choose, his will I be, and with him will I
abide.
“Not at all,” Hushai answered. “For the one chosen by the LORD, by the people, and by all the men of Israel—his I will be, and with him I will remain.
But the people
answered, Thou shalt not go forth: for if we
flee away, they will not care for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us: but now thou art worth ten thousand of us: therefore now it is better that thou succour us out of the city.
But the people
pleaded, “You must not go out! For if we have to
flee, they will pay no attention to us. Even if half of us die, they will not care; but you are worth ten thousand of us. It is better for now if you support us from the city.”
And the king said, Is the young man
Absalom safe? And
Ahimaaz answered, When
Joab sent the king’s servant, and me thy servant, I saw a great
tumult, but I knew not what it was.
The king asked, “Is the young man
Absalom all right?” And
Ahimaaz replied, “When
Joab sent the king’s servant and your servant, I saw a great
tumult, but I do not know what it was.”
And the king said unto Cushi, Is the young man
Absalom safe? And Cushi
answered, The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise against thee to do thee
hurt, be as that young man is.
The king asked the
Cushite, “Is the young man
Absalom all right?” And the
Cushite replied, “May what has become of the young man happen to the enemies of my lord the king and to all who rise up against you to
harm you.”
But
Abishai the son of Zeruiah
answered and said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he
cursed the LORD’S
anointed?
But
Abishai son of Zeruiah said, “Shouldn’t Shimei be put to death for this, because he
cursed the LORD’s
anointed?”
And he
answered, My lord, O king, my servant
deceived me: for thy servant said, I will
saddle me an
ass, that I may
ride thereon, and go to the king; because thy servant is
lame.
“My lord the king,” he replied, “because I am
lame, I said, ‘I will have my
donkey saddled so that I may
ride on it and go with the king.’ But my servant Ziba
deceived me,
