And God said unto him,
Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for
thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for
thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for
thyself understanding to
discern judgment;
So God said to him, “Since you have asked for this instead of requesting long life or wealth for
yourself or death for your enemies—but you have asked for
discernment to
administer justice—
And this woman’s child died in the night; because she overlaid it.
During the night this woman’s son died because she rolled over on him.
Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her
bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise
slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it.
Then the woman whose son was alive spoke to the king
because she
yearned with
compassion for her son. “Please, my lord,” she said, “give her the living
baby. Do not kill him!” But the other woman said, “He will be neither mine nor yours. Cut him in two!”
And Solomon left all the vessels
unweighed,
because they were exceeding many: neither was the weight of the brass found out.
Solomon left all these articles
unweighed,
because there were so many. The weight of the bronze could not be determined.
So that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of the LORD.
so that the priests could not stand there to minister because of the cloud; for the glory of the LORD filled the house of the LORD.
When thy people Israel be
smitten down before the enemy,
because they have
sinned against thee, and shall turn again to thee, and
confess thy name, and pray, and make
supplication unto thee in this house:
When Your people Israel are defeated before an enemy
because they have
sinned against You, and they return to You and
confess Your name, praying and
pleading with You in this temple,
When heaven is shut up, and there is no rain,
because they have
sinned against thee; if they pray toward this place, and
confess thy name, and turn from their sin, when thou afflictest them:
When the
skies are shut and there is no rain
because Your people have
sinned against You, and they pray toward this place and
confess Your name, and they turn from their sins
because You have
afflicted them,
Moreover concerning a stranger, that is not of thy people Israel, but cometh out of a far country for thy name’s sake;
And as for the foreigner who is not of Your people Israel but has come from a distant land because of Your name—
The same day did the king
hallow the middle of the court that was before the house of the LORD: for there he offered burnt offerings, and meat offerings, and the fat of the peace offerings:
because the
brasen altar that was before the LORD was too little to receive the burnt offerings, and meat offerings, and the fat of the peace offerings.
On that same day the king consecrated the middle of the
courtyard in front of the house of the LORD, and there he offered the burnt offerings, the grain offerings, and the fat of the peace offerings, since the bronze altar before the LORD was too small to contain all these offerings.
And they shall answer,
Because they
forsook the LORD their God, who brought forth their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and have taken hold upon other gods, and have worshipped them, and served them: therefore hath the LORD brought upon them all this evil.
And others will answer, ‘
Because they have
forsaken the LORD their God who brought their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and have embraced other gods, worshiping and serving them—
because of this, the LORD has brought all this
disaster upon them.’”
But of the children of Israel did Solomon make no
bondmen: but they were men of war, and his servants, and his princes, and his captains, and rulers of his
chariots, and his
horsemen.
But Solomon did not
consign any of the Israelites to slavery,
because they were his men of war, his servants, his officers, his captains, and the commanders of his
chariots and cavalry.
Blessed be the LORD thy God, which delighted in thee, to set thee on the throne of Israel: because the LORD loved Israel for ever, therefore made he thee king, to do judgment and justice.
Blessed be the LORD your God, who has delighted in you to set you on the throne of Israel. Because of the LORD’s eternal love for Israel, He has made you king to carry out justice and righteousness.”
And all king Solomon’s drinking vessels were of gold, and all the vessels of the house of the forest of
Lebanon were of pure gold; none were of silver: it was nothing accounted of in the days of Solomon.
All King Solomon’s drinking cups were gold, and all the utensils of the House of the Forest of
Lebanon were pure gold. There was no silver,
because it was accounted as nothing in the days of Solomon.
And the LORD was
angry with Solomon,
because his heart was turned from the LORD God of Israel, which had appeared unto him twice,
Now the LORD grew
angry with Solomon,
because his heart had turned away from the LORD, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice.
Wherefore the LORD said unto Solomon,
Forasmuch as this is done of thee, and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded thee, I will surely
rend the kingdom from thee, and will give it to thy servant.
Then the LORD said to Solomon, “
Because you have done this and have not kept My covenant and My statutes, which I have commanded you, I will
tear the kingdom away from you and give it to your servant.
Because that they have
forsaken me, and have worshipped
Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians,
Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Milcom the god of the children of
Ammon, and have not walked in my ways, to do that which is right in mine eyes, and to keep my statutes and my judgments, as did David his father.
For they have
forsaken Me to worship
Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians,
Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Milcom the god of the
Ammonites. They have not walked in My ways, nor done what is right in My eyes, nor kept My statutes and judgments, as Solomon’s father David did.
Howbeit I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand: but I will make him prince all the days of his life for David my servant’s sake, whom I chose,
because he kept my commandments and my statutes:
Nevertheless, I will not take the whole kingdom out of Solomon’s hand, because I have made him ruler all the days of his life for the sake of David My servant, whom I chose because he kept My commandments and statutes.
And I will for this
afflict the seed of David, but not for ever.
Because of this, I will humble David’s descendants—but not
forever.’”
And he
cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the LORD,
Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the LORD, and hast not kept the commandment which the LORD thy God commanded thee,
and the prophet
cried out to the man of God who had come from Judah, “This is what the LORD says: ‘
Because you have
defied the word of the LORD and have not kept the commandment that the LORD your God gave you,
And
Jeroboam’s wife did so, and arose, and went to
Shiloh, and came to the house of
Ahijah. But
Ahijah could not see; for his eyes were set by reason of his age.
And the LORD said unto
Ahijah, Behold, the wife of
Jeroboam cometh to ask a thing of thee for her son; for he is sick: thus and thus shalt thou say unto her: for it shall be, when she cometh in, that she shall
feign herself to be another woman.
But the LORD had said to
Ahijah, “Behold, the wife of
Jeroboam is coming to ask you about her son, for he is ill. You are to say such and such to her,
because when she arrives, she will be
disguised.”
Therefore, behold, I will bring evil upon the house of
Jeroboam, and will cut off from
Jeroboam him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel, and will take away the
remnant of the house of
Jeroboam, as a man taketh away dung, till it be all gone.
Because of all this, behold, I am bringing
disaster on the house of
Jeroboam: I will cut off from
Jeroboam every male, both slave and free, in Israel; I will burn up the house of
Jeroboam as one burns up dung until it is gone!
And all Israel shall
mourn for him, and
bury him: for he only of
Jeroboam shall come to the grave,
because in him there is found some good thing toward the LORD God of Israel in the house of
Jeroboam.
All Israel will
mourn for him and
bury him. For this is the only one belonging to
Jeroboam who will receive a proper burial,
because only in him has the LORD, the God of Israel, found any good in the house of
Jeroboam.
For the LORD shall
smite Israel, as a reed is
shaken in the water, and he shall root up Israel out of this good land, which he gave to their fathers, and shall
scatter them beyond the river,
because they have made their groves,
provoking the LORD to anger.
For the LORD will strike Israel as a reed is
shaken in the water. He will
uproot Israel from this good land that He gave their fathers, and He will
scatter them beyond the Euphrates,
because they have made their Asherah poles,
provoking the LORD to anger.
And he shall give Israel up
because of the sins of
Jeroboam, who did sin, and who made Israel to sin.
So He will give Israel over on account of the sins
Jeroboam has committed and has caused Israel to commit.”
Because David did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, and turned not aside from any thing that he commanded him all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.
For David had done what was right in the eyes of the LORD and had not turned aside from anything the LORD commanded all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.
And also Maachah his mother, even her he removed from being queen,
because she had made an
idol in a
grove; and
Asa destroyed her
idol, and burnt it by the
brook Kidron.
because of the sins
Jeroboam had committed and had caused Israel to commit, and
because he had
provoked the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger.
And also by the hand of the prophet
Jehu the son of Hanani came the word of the LORD against
Baasha, and against his house, even for all the evil that he did in the sight of the LORD, in
provoking him to anger with the work of his hands, in being like the house of
Jeroboam; and
because he killed him.
Moreover, the word of the LORD came through the prophet
Jehu son of Hanani against
Baasha and his house,
because of all the evil he had done in the sight of the LORD,
provoking Him to anger with the work of his hands and becoming like the house of
Jeroboam, and also
because Baasha had struck down the house of
Jeroboam.
For all the sins of
Baasha, and the sins of Elah his son, by which they
sinned, and by which they made Israel to sin, in
provoking the LORD God of Israel to anger with their
vanities.
This happened
because of all the sins
Baasha and his son Elah had committed and had caused Israel to commit,
provoking the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger with their worthless idols.
For his sins which he
sinned in doing evil in the sight of the LORD, in walking in the way of
Jeroboam, and in his sin which he did, to make Israel to sin.
because of the sins he had committed, doing evil in the sight of the LORD and following the example of
Jeroboam and the sin he had committed and had caused Israel to commit.
And it came to pass after a while, that the
brook dried up,
because there had been no rain in the land.
Some time later, however, the
brook dried up
because there had been no rain in the land.
And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.
A second time the angel of the LORD returned and touched him, saying, “Get up and eat, or the journey will be too much for you.”
And he said, I have been very
jealous for the LORD God of hosts:
because the children of Israel have
forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
“I have been very
zealous for the LORD, the God of Hosts,” he replied, “but the Israelites have
forsaken Your covenant,
torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I am the only one left, and they are seeking my life as well.”
And there came a man of God, and spake unto the king of Israel, and said, Thus saith the LORD, Because the Syrians have said, The LORD is God of the hills, but he is not God of the valleys, therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thine hand, and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
Then the man of God approached the king of Israel and said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Because the Arameans think the LORD is a god of the hills and not of the valleys, I will deliver all this great army into your hand. Then you will know that I am the LORD.’”
Then said he unto him,
Because thou hast not obeyed the voice of the LORD, behold, as soon as thou art departed from me, a lion shall
slay thee. And as soon as he was departed from him, a lion found him, and
slew him.
Then the prophet said to him, “Because you have not obeyed the voice of the LORD, as soon as you depart from me a lion will kill you.” And when he left, a lion found him and killed him.
And he said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Because thou hast let go out of thy hand a man whom I appointed to utter destruction, therefore thy life shall go for his life, and thy people for his people.
And the prophet said to the king, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Because you have let slip from your hand the man I had devoted to destruction, your life will be exchanged for his life, and your people for his people.’”
And
Ahab spake unto
Naboth, saying, Give me thy
vineyard, that I may have it for a garden of herbs,
because it is near unto my house: and I will give thee for it a better
vineyard than it; or, if it seem good to thee, I will give thee the worth of it in money.
So
Ahab said to
Naboth, “Give me your
vineyard to use as a vegetable garden, since it is next to my palace. I will give you a better
vineyard in its place—or if you
prefer, I will give you its value in silver.”
And
Ahab came into his house heavy and displeased
because of the word which
Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him: for he had said, I will not give thee the inheritance of my fathers. And he laid him down upon his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no bread.
So
Ahab went to his palace,
sullen and
angry because Naboth the Jezreelite had told him, “I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers.” He lay down on his bed, turned his face away, and refused to eat.
And he said unto her,
Because I spake unto
Naboth the Jezreelite, and said unto him, Give me thy
vineyard for money; or else, if it please thee, I will give thee another
vineyard for it: and he answered, I will not give thee my
vineyard.
Ahab answered, “
Because I spoke to
Naboth the Jezreelite and told him, ‘Give me your
vineyard for silver, or if you wish, I will give you another
vineyard in its place.’ And he replied, ‘I will not give you my
vineyard!’”
And
Ahab said to
Elijah, Hast thou found me, O mine enemy? And he answered, I have found thee:
because thou hast sold
thyself to work evil in the sight of the LORD.
When
Elijah arrived,
Ahab said to him, “So you have found me out, my enemy.” He replied, “I have found you out
because you have sold
yourself to do evil in the sight of the LORD.
I will make your house like that of
Jeroboam son of Nebat and like that of
Baasha son of
Ahijah,
because you have
provoked My anger and caused Israel to sin.’
Seest thou how
Ahab humbleth himself before me?
because he humbleth himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his days: but in his son’s days will I bring the evil upon his house.
“Have you seen how
Ahab has humbled himself before Me?
Because he has humbled himself before Me, I will not bring the
calamity during his days, but I will bring it upon his house in the days of his son.”
And the king of Israel said unto
Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man, Micaiah the son of Imlah, by whom we may
enquire of the LORD: but I
hate him; for he
doth not
prophesy good concerning me, but evil. And
Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so.
The king of Israel answered, “There is still one man who can ask the LORD, but I
hate him
because he never prophesies anything good for me, but only bad. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.” “The king should not say that!”
Jehoshaphat replied.
Jehoshaphat made ships of Tharshish to go to
Ophir for gold: but they went not; for the ships were broken at Ezion-
geber.
But the angel of the LORD said to
Elijah the Tishbite, Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say unto them, Is it not
because there is not a God in Israel, that ye go to
enquire of
Baal-
zebub the god of
Ekron?
But the angel of the LORD said to
Elijah the Tishbite, “Go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and ask them, ‘Is it
because there is no God in Israel that you are on your way to inquire of
Baal-
zebub, the god of
Ekron?’
And they said unto him, There came a man up to meet us, and said unto us, Go, turn again unto the king that sent you, and say unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Is it not
because there is not a God in Israel, that thou sendest to
enquire of
Baal-
zebub the god of
Ekron? therefore thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.
They replied, “A man came up to meet us and said, ‘Go back to the king who sent you and tell him that this is what the LORD says: Is it
because there is no God in Israel that you are sending these men to inquire of
Baal-
zebub, the god of
Ekron? Therefore you will not get up from the bed on which you are lying. You will surely die.’”
And he said unto him, Thus saith the LORD,
Forasmuch as thou hast sent messengers to
enquire of
Baal-
zebub the god of
Ekron, is it not
because there is no God in Israel to
enquire of his word? therefore thou shalt not come down off that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.
And
Elijah said to King
Ahaziah, “This is what the LORD says: Is there really no God in Israel for you to inquire of His word? Is that why you have sent messengers to inquire of
Baal-
zebub, the god of
Ekron? Therefore you will not get up from the bed on which you are lying. You will surely die.”
So he died according to the word of the LORD which
Elijah had spoken. And Jehoram reigned in his
stead in the second year of Jehoram the son of
Jehoshaphat king of Judah;
because he had no son.
So
Ahaziah died according to the word of the LORD that
Elijah had spoken. And since he had no son, Jehoram succeeded him in the second year of the reign of Jehoram son of
Jehoshaphat over Judah.
Now
Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honourable,
because by him the LORD had given
deliverance unto Syria: he was also a mighty man in valour, but he was a
leper.
Now
Naaman, the commander of the army of the king of
Aram, was a great man in his master’s sight and highly regarded, for through him the LORD had given victory to
Aram. And he was a mighty man of
valor, but he was a
leper.
And
Hazael said, Why weepeth my lord? And he answered,
Because I know the evil that thou
wilt do unto the children of Israel: their strong holds
wilt thou set on fire, and their young men
wilt thou
slay with the sword, and
wilt dash their children, and
rip up their women with child.
“Why is my lord
weeping?” asked
Hazael. “
Because I know the evil you will do to the Israelites,”
Elisha replied. “You will set fire to their fortresses, kill their young men with the sword,
dash their little ones to pieces, and
rip open their
pregnant women.”
And king
Joram went back to be
healed in
Jezreel of the wounds which the Syrians had given him at
Ramah, when he fought against
Hazael king of Syria. And
Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see
Joram the son of
Ahab in
Jezreel,
because he was sick.
So King
Joram returned to
Jezreel to recover from the wounds that the Arameans had inflicted on him at
Ramah when he fought against
Hazael king of
Aram. Then
Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to
Jezreel to visit
Joram son of
Ahab,
because Joram had been wounded.
And the LORD said unto
Jehu,
Because thou hast done well in
executing that which is right in mine eyes, and hast done unto the house of
Ahab according to all that was in mine heart, thy children of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel.
Nevertheless, the LORD said to
Jehu, “
Because you have done well in carrying out what is right in My sight and have done to the house of
Ahab all that was in My heart, four generations of your sons will sit on the throne of Israel.”
And all the people of the land
rejoiced, and the city was in quiet: and they
slew Athaliah with the sword beside the king’s house.
and all the people of the land
rejoiced. And the city was quiet,
because Athaliah had been put to the sword at the royal palace.
Moreover they reckoned not with the men, into whose hand they delivered the money to be bestowed on workmen: for they dealt faithfully.
No accounting was required from the men who received the money to pay the workmen,
because they acted with
integrity.
Then
Jehoahaz sought the favor of the LORD, and the LORD
listened to him
because He saw the oppression that the king of
Aram had inflicted on Israel.
And the LORD was
gracious unto them, and had
compassion on them, and had respect unto them,
because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not destroy them, neither cast he them from his presence as yet.
But the LORD was
gracious to Israel and had
compassion on them, and He turned toward them
because of His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. And to this day, the LORD has been unwilling to destroy them or cast them from His presence.
Then Menahem
smote Tiphsah, and all that were therein, and the coasts thereof from Tirzah:
because they opened not to him, therefore he
smote it; and all the women therein that were with child he
ripped up.
At that time Menahem, starting from Tirzah, attacked Tiphsah and
everyone in its vicinity,
because they would not open their gates. So he attacked Tiphsah and
ripped open all the
pregnant women.
For so it was, that the children of Israel had
sinned against the LORD their God, which had brought them up out of the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods,
All this happened
because the people of Israel had
sinned against the LORD their God, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. They had worshiped other gods
Wherefore they spake to the king of Assyria, saying, The nations which thou hast removed, and placed in the cities of Samaria, know not the manner of the God of the land: therefore he hath sent lions among them, and, behold, they
slay them,
because they know not the manner of the God of the land.
So they spoke to the king of Assyria, saying, “The peoples that you have removed and placed in the cities of Samaria do not know the requirements of the God of the land. Because of this, He has sent lions among them, which are indeed killing them off.”
Because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD their God, but
transgressed his covenant, and all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded, and would not hear them, nor do them.
This happened
because they did not
listen to the voice of the LORD their God, but
violated His covenant—all that Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded—and would neither
listen nor obey.
Because thy
rage against me and thy
tumult is come up into mine ears, therefore I will put my hook in thy nose, and my
bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest.
Because your
rage and
arrogance against Me have reached My ears, I will put My hook in your nose and My
bit in your mouth; I will send you back the way you came.’
Because Manasseh king of Judah hath done these abominations, and hath done wickedly above all that the
Amorites did, which were before him, and hath made Judah also to sin with his idols:
“Since
Manasseh king of Judah has committed all these abominations, acting more wickedly than the
Amorites who preceded him, and with his idols has caused Judah to sin,
Because they have done that which was evil in my sight, and have
provoked me to anger, since the day their fathers came forth out of Egypt, even unto this day.
because they have done evil in My sight and have
provoked Me to anger from the day their fathers came out of Egypt until this day.’”
Howbeit there was no
reckoning made with them of the money that was delivered into their hand,
because they dealt faithfully.
But they need not account for the money put into their hands, since they work with
integrity.”
Go ye,
enquire of the LORD for me, and for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that is found: for great is the wrath of the LORD that is
kindled against us,
because our fathers have not
hearkened unto the words of this book, to do according unto all that which is written concerning us.
“Go and inquire of the LORD for me, for the people, and for all Judah concerning the words in this book that has been found. For great is the wrath of the LORD that burns against us because our fathers have not obeyed the words of this book by doing all that is written about us.”
Because they have
forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might
provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be
kindled against this place, and shall not be
quenched.
because they have
forsaken Me and burned incense to other gods, that they might
provoke Me to anger with all the works of their hands. My wrath will be
kindled against this place and will not be
quenched.’
Because thine heart was tender, and thou hast humbled
thyself before the LORD, when thou heardest what I spake against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a
desolation and a
curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and
wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith the LORD.
because your heart was tender and you humbled
yourself before the LORD when you heard what I spoke against this place and against its people, that they would become a
desolation and a
curse, and
because you have
torn your clothes and
wept before Me, I have heard you,’ declares the LORD.
Notwithstanding the LORD turned not from the fierceness of his great wrath,
wherewith his anger was
kindled against Judah,
because of all the provocations that
Manasseh had
provoked him
withal.
Nevertheless, the LORD did not turn away from the
fury of His burning anger, which was
kindled against Judah
because of all that
Manasseh had done to
provoke Him to anger.
Surely at the commandment of the LORD came this upon Judah, to remove them out of his sight, for the sins of
Manasseh, according to all that he did;
Surely this happened to Judah at the LORD’s command, to remove them from His presence
because of the sins of
Manasseh and all that he had done,
And the king of Egypt came not again any more out of his land: for the king of Babylon had taken from the river of Egypt unto the river Euphrates all that
pertained to the king of Egypt.
Now the king of Egypt did not march out of his land again,
because the king of Babylon had taken all his territory, from the
Brook of Egypt to the Euphrates River.
For through the anger of the LORD it came to pass in Jerusalem and Judah, until he had cast them out from his presence, that
Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.
For
because of the anger of the LORD, all this happened in Jerusalem and Judah, until He finally banished them from His presence. And
Zedekiah also rebelled against the king of Babylon.
And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of the one was Peleg; because in his days the earth was divided: and his brother’s name was Joktan.
Two sons were born to Eber: One was named Peleg, because in his days the earth was divided, and his brother was named Joktan.
And Jabez was more honourable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow.
Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.”
And Meonothai
begat Ophrah: and Seraiah
begat Joab, the father of the valley of Charashim; for they were
craftsmen.
Meonothai was the father of Ophrah, and Seraiah was the father of
Joab, the father of those living in Ge-harashim, which was given this name
because its people were
craftsmen.
And these written by name came in the days of
Hezekiah king of Judah, and
smote their tents, and the habitations that were found there, and destroyed them utterly unto this day, and dwelt in their rooms:
because there was pasture there for their flocks.
These who were noted by name came in the days of
Hezekiah king of Judah. They attacked the Hamites and Meunites there in their dwellings,
devoting them to destruction even to this day. Then they settled in their place,
because there was pasture for their flocks.
And eastward he inhabited unto the entering in of the wilderness from the river Euphrates:
because their cattle were multiplied in the land of
Gilead.
They also settled in the east as far as the edge of the desert that extends to the Euphrates River,
because their
livestock had increased in the land of
Gilead.
And they were helped against them, and the Hagarites were delivered into their hand, and all that were with them: for they
cried to God in the battle, and he was intreated of them;
because they put their trust in him.
And
because they
cried out to God in battle, they were helped against their enemies, and the Hagrites and all their allies were delivered into their hands.
Because they put their trust in God, He answered their prayers.
For there fell down many slain, because the war was of God. And they dwelt in their steads until the captivity.
and many others fell slain, because the battle belonged to God. And they occupied the land until the exile.
Now these are their dwelling places throughout their castles in their coasts, of the sons of Aaron, of the families of the Kohathites: for theirs was the lot.
Now these were the territories assigned to the descendants of Aaron from the Kohathite clan for their settlements, because the first lot fell to them:
And Zabad his son, and Shuthelah his son, and Ezer, and Elead, whom the men of
Gath that were born in that land
slew,
because they came down to take away their cattle.
Shuthelah, Bered his son, Tahath his son, Eleadah his son, Tahath his son, Zabad his son, and Shuthelah his son. Ezer and Elead were killed by the natives of
Gath,
because they went down to
steal their
livestock.
And when he went in to his wife, she conceived, and bare a son, and he called his name Beriah, because it went evil with his house.
And again he
slept with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to a son. So he named him Beriah,
because tragedy had come upon his house.
So all Israel were reckoned by
genealogies; and, behold, they were written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah, who were carried away to Babylon for their
transgression.
So all Israel was recorded in the
genealogies written in the Book of the Kings of Israel. But Judah was exiled to Babylon
because of their unfaithfulness.
And they
lodged round about the house of God,
because the charge was upon them, and the opening thereof every morning
pertained to them.
They would
spend the night stationed around the house of God,
because they were responsible for guarding it and opening it every morning.
And these are the singers, chief of the fathers of the Levites, who remaining in the chambers were free: for they were employed in that work day and night.
Those who were musicians, the heads of
Levite families, stayed in the temple chambers and were
exempt from other duties
because they were on duty day and night.
So Saul died for his
transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to
enquire of it;
So Saul died for his unfaithfulness to the LORD, because he did not keep the word of the LORD and even consulted a medium for guidance,
And said, My God
forbid it me, that I should do this thing: shall I drink the blood of these men that have put their lives in
jeopardy? for with the
jeopardy of their lives they brought it. Therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mightiest.
saying, “Far be it from me, my God, to do this! How can I drink the blood of these men who risked their lives?” Because they had brought it at the risk of their lives, David refused to drink it. Such were the exploits of the three mighty men.
Now these are they that came to David to
Ziklag, while he yet kept himself close
because of Saul the son of
Kish: and they were among the mighty men, helpers of the war.
Now these were the men who came to David at
Ziklag, while he was still banished from the presence of Saul son of
Kish (they were among the mighty men who helped him in battle;
And there fell some of
Manasseh to David, when he came with the Philistines against Saul to battle: but they helped them not: for the lords of the Philistines upon
advisement sent him away, saying, He will fall to his master Saul to the
jeopardy of our heads.
Some from
Manasseh defected to David when he went with the Philistines to fight against Saul. (They did not help the Philistines
because the
Philistine rulers consulted and sent David away, saying, “It will cost us our heads if he defects to his master Saul.”)
And all the congregation said that they would do so: for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people.
And because this proposal seemed right to all the people, the whole assembly agreed to it.
And when they came unto the threshingfloor of Chidon, Uzza put forth his hand to hold the ark; for the oxen
stumbled.
When they came to the
threshing floor of Chidon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark,
because the oxen had
stumbled.
And the anger of the LORD was
kindled against Uzza, and he
smote him,
because he put his hand to the ark: and there he died before God.
And the anger of the LORD burned against Uzzah, and He struck him down because he had put his hand on the ark. So he died there before God.
And David was displeased,
because the LORD had made a breach upon Uzza: wherefore that place is called
Perez-uzza to this day.
Then David became
angry because the LORD had
burst forth against Uzzah; so he named that place
Perez-uzzah, as it is called to this day.
And David perceived that the LORD had confirmed him king over Israel, for his kingdom was lifted up on high, because of his people Israel.
And David realized that the LORD had established him as king over Israel and had highly
exalted his kingdom for the sake of His people Israel.
And it shall be, when thou shalt hear a sound of going in the tops of the
mulberry trees, that then thou shalt go out to battle: for God is gone forth before thee to
smite the host of the Philistines.
As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the
balsam trees, move out to battle,
because this will mean that God has marched out before you to strike the camp of the Philistines.”
Then David said, None ought to carry the ark of God but the Levites: for them hath the LORD chosen to carry the ark of God, and to minister unto him for ever.
Then David said, “No one but the Levites may carry the ark of God,
because the LORD has chosen them to carry the ark of the LORD and to minister before Him
forever.”
