And in those times there was no peace to him that went out, nor to him that came in, but great vexations were upon all the inhabitants of the countries.
In those days there was no safety for travelers, because the residents of the lands had many conflicts.
Be ye strong therefore, and let not your hands be weak: for your work shall be rewarded.
But as for you, be strong; do not be discouraged, for your work will be rewarded.”
But the high places were not taken away out of Israel: nevertheless the heart of
Asa was perfect all his days.
The high places were not removed from Israel,
but Asa’s heart was fully devoted all his days.
And
Asa in the thirty and ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet, until his disease was exceeding great: yet in his disease he sought not to the LORD,
but to the physicians.
In the thirty-ninth year of his reign,
Asa became diseased in his feet, and his
malady became increasingly severe. Yet even in his illness he did not seek the LORD,
but only the physicians.
But sought to the LORD God of his father, and walked in his commandments, and not after the doings of Israel.
but he sought the God of his father and walked by His commandments rather than the practices of Israel.
And
Jehoshaphat said unto the king of Israel,
Enquire, I pray thee, at the word of the LORD to day.
But Jehoshaphat also said to the king of Israel, “Please inquire first for the word of the LORD.”
But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the LORD besides, that we might
enquire of him?
But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there not still a prophet of the LORD here of whom we can inquire?”
And the king of Israel said unto
Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man, by whom we may
enquire of the LORD:
but I
hate him; for he never
prophesied good unto me,
but always evil: the same is Micaiah the son of Imla. And
Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so.
The king of Israel answered, “There is still one man who can ask the LORD,
but I
hate him because he never prophesies anything good for me,
but only bad. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.” “The king should not say that!”
Jehoshaphat replied.
And Micaiah said, As the LORD liveth, even what my God saith, that will I speak.
But Micaiah said, “As surely as the LORD lives, I will speak whatever my God tells me.”
And the king said to him, How many times shall I
adjure thee that thou say nothing
but the truth to me in the name of the LORD?
But the king said to him, “How many times must I make you
swear not to tell me anything
but the truth in the name of the LORD?”
And the king of Israel said to
Jehoshaphat, Did I not tell thee that he would not
prophesy good unto me,
but evil?
Then the king of Israel said to
Jehoshaphat, “Did I not tell you that he never prophesies good for me,
but only bad?”
And Micaiah said, If thou certainly return in peace, then hath not the LORD spoken by me. And he said,
Hearken, all ye people.
But Micaiah replied, “If you ever return safely, the LORD has not spoken through me.” Then he added, “Take
heed, all you people!”
And the king of Israel said unto
Jehoshaphat, I will
disguise myself, and will go to the battle;
but put thou on thy robes. So the king of Israel
disguised himself; and they went to the battle.
And the king of Israel said to
Jehoshaphat, “I will
disguise myself and go into battle,
but you wear your royal robes.” So the king of Israel
disguised himself and went into battle.
And it came to pass, when the captains of the
chariots saw
Jehoshaphat, that they said, It is the king of Israel. Therefore they compassed about him to fight:
but Jehoshaphat cried out, and the LORD helped him; and God moved them to depart from him.
When the
chariot commanders saw
Jehoshaphat, they said, “This is the king of Israel!” So they turned to fight against him,
but Jehoshaphat cried out, and the LORD helped him. God drew them away from him.
And said to the judges, Take
heed what ye do: for ye judge not for man,
but for the LORD, who is with you in the judgment.
Then he said to the judges, “Consider carefully what you do, for you are not judging for man, but for the LORD, who is with you when you render judgment.
And now, behold, the children of
Ammon and Moab and mount
Seir, whom thou wouldest not let Israel
invade, when they came out of the land of Egypt,
but they turned from them, and destroyed them not;
And now, here are the men of
Ammon, Moab, and Mount
Seir, whom You did not let Israel
invade when they came out of the land of Egypt;
but Israel turned away from them and did not destroy them.
O our God,
wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do:
but our eyes are upon thee.
Our God, will You not judge them? For we are powerless before this vast army that comes against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon You.”
And he said,
Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king
Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours,
but God’s.
And he said, “
Listen, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem!
Listen, King
Jehoshaphat! This is what the LORD says: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army, for the battle does not belong to you,
but to God.
And when Judah came toward the watch tower in the wilderness, they looked unto the multitude, and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none escaped.
When the men of Judah came to a place overlooking the wilderness, they looked for the vast army, but there were only corpses lying on the ground; no one had escaped.
And their father gave them great gifts of silver, and of gold, and of precious things, with
fenced cities in Judah:
but the kingdom gave he to Jehoram; because he was the
firstborn.
Their father had given them many gifts of silver and gold and precious things, as well as the fortified cities in Judah;
but he gave the kingdom to Jehoram because he was the
firstborn.
But hast walked in the way of the kings of Israel, and hast made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to go a
whoring, like to the whoredoms of the house of
Ahab, and also hast slain thy brethren of thy father’s house, which were better than
thyself:
but you have walked in the ways of the kings of Israel and have caused Judah and the people of Jerusalem to
prostitute themselves, just as the house of
Ahab prostituted itself. You have also killed your brothers, your father’s family, who were better than you.
Thirty and two years old was he when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years, and departed without being desired.
Howbeit they buried him in the city of David,
but not in the
sepulchres of the kings.
Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years. He died, to no one’s
regret, and was buried in the City of David,
but not in the tombs of the kings.
He walked also after their counsel, and went with Jehoram the son of
Ahab king of Israel to war against
Hazael king of Syria at
Ramoth-
gilead: and the Syrians
smote Joram.
But when
Athaliah the mother of
Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the seed royal of the house of Judah.
When
Athaliah the mother of
Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she proceeded to
annihilate all the royal heirs of the house of Judah.
But Jehoshabeath, the daughter of the king, took
Joash the son of
Ahaziah, and
stole him from among the king’s sons that were slain, and put him and his
nurse in a
bedchamber. So Jehoshabeath, the daughter of king Jehoram, the wife of Jehoiada the priest, (for she was the sister of
Ahaziah,)
hid him from
Athaliah, so that she
slew him not.
But Jehoshabeath daughter of King Jehoram took
Joash son of
Ahaziah and
stole him away from among the sons of the king who were being murdered, and she put him and his
nurse in a
bedroom. Because Jehoshabeath, the daughter of King Jehoram and the wife of Jehoiada the priest, was
Ahaziah’s sister, she
hid Joash from
Athaliah so that she could not kill him.
But let none come into the house of the LORD, save the priests, and they that minister of the Levites; they shall go in, for they are holy: but all the people shall keep the watch of the LORD.
No one is to enter the house of the LORD except the priests and those Levites who serve; they may enter because they are consecrated, but all the people are to obey the requirement of the LORD.
And the Levites shall compass the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand; and
whosoever else cometh into the house, he shall be put to death:
but be ye with the king when he cometh in, and when he goeth out.
The Levites must
surround the king with weapons in hand, and
anyone who enters the temple must be put to death. You must stay close to the king wherever he goes.”
But Jehoiada waxed old, and was full of days when he died; an hundred and thirty years old was he when he died.
When Jehoiada was old and full of years, he died at the age of 130.
Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again unto the LORD; and they
testified against them:
but they would not give ear.
Nevertheless, the LORD sent prophets to bring the people back to Him and to
testify against them;
but they would not
listen.
And they
conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the LORD.
Thus
Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him,
but slew his son. And when he died, he said, The LORD look upon it, and require it.
Thus King
Joash failed to remember the kindness that
Zechariah’s father Jehoiada had extended to him. Instead,
Joash killed Jehoiada’s son. As he lay dying,
Zechariah said, “May the LORD see this and call you to account.”
And when they were departed from him, (for they left him in great diseases,) his own servants
conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and
slew him on his bed, and he died: and they buried him in the city of David,
but they buried him not in the
sepulchres of the kings.
And when the Arameans had withdrawn, they left
Joash severely wounded. His own servants
conspired against him for
shedding the blood of the son of Jehoiada the priest, and they killed him on his bed. So he died and was buried in the City of David,
but not in the tombs of the kings.
And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, but not with a perfect heart.
And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, but not wholeheartedly.
But he
slew not their children,
but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses, where the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, neither shall the children die for the fathers,
but every man shall die for his own sin.
Yet he did not put their sons to death, but acted according to what is written in the Law, in the Book of Moses, where the LORD commanded: “Fathers must not be put to death for their children, and children must not be put to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin.”
But there came a man of God to him, saying, O king, let not the army of Israel go with thee; for the LORD is not with Israel, to wit, with all the children of Ephraim.
But a man of God came to him and said, “O king, do not let the army of Israel go with you, for the LORD is not with Israel—not with any of the Ephraimites.
But if thou
wilt go, do it, be strong for the battle: God shall make thee fall before the enemy: for God hath power to help, and to cast down.
Even if you go and fight
bravely in battle, God will make you
stumble before the enemy, for God has power to help and power to overthrow.”
And
Amaziah said to the man of God,
But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel? And the man of God answered, The LORD is able to give thee much more than this.
Amaziah asked the man of God, “What should I do about the hundred talents I have given to the army of Israel?” And the man of God replied, “The LORD is able to give you much more than this.”
But the soldiers of the army which
Amaziah sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, fell upon the cities of Judah, from Samaria even unto Beth-horon, and
smote three thousand of them, and took much
spoil.
Meanwhile the troops that
Amaziah had dismissed from battle
raided the cities of Judah, from Samaria to Beth-horon. They struck down 3,000 people and carried off a great deal of
plunder.
And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that the king said unto him, Art thou made of the king’s counsel?
forbear; why shouldest thou be
smitten? Then the prophet
forbare, and said, I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not
hearkened unto my counsel.
While he was still speaking, the king asked, “Have we made you the
counselor to the king? Stop! Why be struck down?” So the prophet stopped,
but he said, “I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not
heeded my advice.”
But Amaziah would not hear; for it came of God, that he might deliver them into the hand of their enemies, because they sought after the gods of
Edom.
But Amaziah would not
listen, for this had come from God in order to deliver them into the hand of Jehoash, because they had sought the gods of
Edom.
Now after the time that
Amaziah did turn away from following the LORD they made a
conspiracy against him in Jerusalem; and he fled to
Lachish:
but they sent to
Lachish after him, and
slew him there.
From the time that
Amaziah turned from following the LORD, a
conspiracy was formed against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to
Lachish.
But men were sent after him to
Lachish, and they killed him there.
But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction: for he
transgressed against the LORD his God, and went into the temple of the LORD to burn incense upon the altar of incense.
But when Uzziah grew powerful, his
arrogance led to his own destruction. He was unfaithful to the LORD his God, for he entered the temple of the LORD to burn incense on the altar of incense.
And they
withstood Uzziah the king, and said unto him, It appertaineth not unto thee, Uzziah, to burn incense unto the LORD,
but to the priests the sons of Aaron, that are consecrated to burn incense: go out of the sanctuary; for thou hast
trespassed; neither shall it be for thine honour from the LORD God.
They took their stand against King Uzziah and said, “Uzziah, you have no right to offer incense to the LORD. Only the priests, the descendants of Aaron, are consecrated to burn incense. Leave the sanctuary, for you have acted unfaithfully; you will not receive honor from the LORD God.”
Then Uzziah was
wroth, and had a
censer in his hand to burn incense: and while he was
wroth with the priests, the
leprosy even rose up in his
forehead before the priests in the house of the LORD, from beside the incense altar.
Uzziah, with a
censer in his hand to offer incense, was
enraged.
But while he
raged against the priests in their presence in the house of the LORD before the altar of incense,
leprosy broke out on his
forehead.
And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father Uzziah did:
howbeit he entered not into the temple of the LORD. And the people did yet corruptly.
And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father Uzziah had done. In addition, he did not enter the temple of the LORD.
But the people still
behaved corruptly.
Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem:
but he did not that which was right in the sight of the LORD, like David his father:
Ahaz was twenty years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem sixteen years. And unlike David his father, he did not do what was right in the eyes of the LORD.
But a prophet of the LORD was there, whose name was
Oded: and he went out before the host that came to Samaria, and said unto them, Behold, because the LORD God of your fathers was
wroth with Judah, he hath delivered them into your hand, and ye have slain them in a
rage that reacheth up unto heaven.
But a prophet of the LORD named
Oded was there, and he went out to meet the army that returned to Samaria. “Look,” he said to them, “because of His wrath against Judah, the LORD, the God of your fathers, has delivered them into your hand.
But you have slaughtered them in a
rage that reaches up to heaven.
And now ye purpose to keep under the children of Judah and Jerusalem for
bondmen and
bondwomen unto you:
but are there not with you, even with you, sins against the LORD your God?
And now you intend to reduce to slavery the men and women of Judah and Jerusalem. But are you not also guilty before the LORD your God?
And Tilgath-pilneser king of Assyria came unto him, and distressed him, but strengthened him not.
For
Ahaz took away a portion out of the house of the LORD, and out of the house of the king, and of the princes, and gave it unto the king of Assyria:
but he helped him not.
Although
Ahaz had taken a portion from the house of the LORD, from the royal palace, and from the princes and had presented it to the king of Assyria, it did not help him.
For he sacrificed unto the gods of Damascus, which
smote him: and he said, Because the gods of the kings of Syria help them, therefore will I sacrifice to them, that they may help me.
But they were the ruin of him, and of all Israel.
Since Damascus had defeated him, he sacrificed to their gods and said, “Because the gods of the kings of
Aram have helped them, I will sacrifice to them that they may help me.”
But these gods were the
downfall of
Ahaz and of all Israel.
And
Ahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city, even in Jerusalem:
but they brought him not into the
sepulchres of the kings of Israel: and
Hezekiah his son reigned in his
stead.
And
Ahaz rested with his fathers and was buried in the city of Jerusalem,
but he was not placed in the tombs of the kings of Israel. And his son
Hezekiah reigned in his place.
But the priests were too few, so that they could not
flay all the burnt offerings: wherefore their brethren the Levites did help them, till the work was ended, and until the other priests had
sanctified themselves: for the Levites were more upright in heart to
sanctify themselves than the priests.
However, since there were not enough priests to skin all the burnt offerings, their
Levite brothers helped them until the work was finished and until the priests had been consecrated. For the Levites had been more
diligent in
consecrating themselves than the priests had been.
Now be ye not stiffnecked, as your fathers were,
but yield
yourselves unto the LORD, and enter into his sanctuary, which he hath
sanctified for ever: and serve the LORD your God, that the fierceness of his wrath may turn away from you.
Now do not
stiffen your necks as your fathers did. Submit to the LORD and come to His sanctuary, which He has consecrated
forever. Serve the LORD your God, so that His fierce anger will turn away from you.
And the couriers traveled from city to city through the land of Ephraim and
Manasseh as far as
Zebulun;
but the people
scorned and
mocked them.
With him is an arm of flesh;
but with us is the LORD our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of
Hezekiah king of Judah.
With him is only the arm of flesh,
but with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles.” So the people were strengthened by the words of
Hezekiah king of Judah.
After this did
Sennacherib king of Assyria send his servants to Jerusalem, (
but he himself laid siege against
Lachish, and all his power with him,) unto
Hezekiah king of Judah, and unto all Judah that were at Jerusalem, saying,
Later, as
Sennacherib king of Assyria and all his forces besieged
Lachish, he sent his servants to Jerusalem with a message for King
Hezekiah of Judah and all the people of Judah who were in Jerusalem:
But Hezekiah rendered not again according to the benefit done unto him; for his heart was lifted up: therefore there was wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem.
But because his heart was proud,
Hezekiah did not repay the favor shown to him. Therefore wrath came upon him and upon Judah and Jerusalem.
But did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, like unto the abominations of the heathen, whom the LORD had cast out before the children of Israel.
And he did evil in the sight of the LORD by following the abominations of the nations that the LORD had driven out before the Israelites.
And the LORD spake to
Manasseh, and to his people:
but they would not
hearken.
And the LORD spoke to
Manasseh and his people,
but they did not
listen.
Nevertheless the people did sacrifice still in the high places, yet unto the LORD their God only.
Nevertheless, the people still sacrificed at the high places, but only to the LORD their God.
But he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, as did
Manasseh his father: for Amon sacrificed unto all the carved images which
Manasseh his father had made, and served them;
And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, as his father
Manasseh had done. Amon served and sacrificed to all the idols that his father
Manasseh had made,
And humbled not himself before the LORD, as
Manasseh his father had humbled himself;
but Amon
trespassed more and more.
but he did not humble himself before the LORD as his father
Manasseh had done; instead, Amon increased his guilt.
But the people of the land
slew all them that had
conspired against king Amon; and the people of the land made
Josiah his son king in his
stead.
But the people of the land killed all those who had
conspired against King Amon, and they made his son
Josiah king in his place.
And as for the king of Judah, who sent you to
enquire of the LORD, so shall ye say unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel concerning the words which thou hast heard;
But as for the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the LORD, tell him that this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘As for the words that you heard,
And they
roasted the
passover with fire according to the
ordinance:
but the other holy offerings
sod they in pots, and in caldrons, and in pans, and divided them speedily among all the people.
They
roasted the
Passover animals on the fire according to the regulation, and they boiled the other holy offerings in pots, kettles, and
bowls and quickly brought them to all the people.
But he sent ambassadors to him, saying, What have I to do with thee, thou king of Judah? I come not against thee this day,
but against the house
wherewith I have war: for God commanded me to make
haste:
forbear thee from
meddling with God, who is with me, that he destroy thee not.
But Neco sent messengers to him, saying, “What is the issue between you and me, O king of Judah? I have not come against you
today,
but I am fighting another dynasty. God told me to
hurry; so stop
opposing God, who is with me, or He will destroy you!”
Nevertheless
Josiah would not turn his face from him,
but disguised himself, that he might fight with him, and
hearkened not unto the words of
Necho from the mouth of God, and came to fight in the valley of
Megiddo.
Josiah, however, did not turn away from him; instead, in order to
engage him in battle, he
disguised himself. He did not
listen to Neco’s words from the mouth of God,
but went to fight him on the Plain of
Megiddo.
And the king of Egypt made Eliakim his brother king over Judah and Jerusalem, and turned his name to
Jehoiakim. And
Necho took
Jehoahaz his brother, and carried him to Egypt.
Then Neco king of Egypt made Eliakim brother of
Jehoahaz king over Judah and Jerusalem, and he changed Eliakim’s name to
Jehoiakim.
But Neco took Eliakim’s brother
Jehoahaz and carried him off to Egypt.
But they
mocked the messengers of God, and
despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy.
But they
mocked the messengers of God,
despising His words and
scoffing at His prophets, until the wrath of the LORD against His people was
stirred up beyond remedy.
And these were they which went up from Tel-melah, Tel-harsa,
Cherub, Addan, and Immer:
but they could not
shew their father’s house, and their seed, whether they were of Israel:
The following came up from Tel-melah, Tel-harsha,
Cherub, Addan, and Immer,
but could not prove that their families were descended from Israel:
These sought their register among those that were reckoned by
genealogy,
but they were not found: therefore were they, as
polluted, put from the priesthood.
These men searched for their family records, but they could not find them and so were excluded from the priesthood as unclean.
From the first day of the seventh month began they to offer burnt offerings unto the LORD. But the foundation of the temple of the LORD was not yet laid.
On the first day of the seventh month, the Israelites began to offer burnt offerings to the LORD, although the foundation of the temple of the LORD had not been laid.
But many of the priests and Levites and chief of the fathers, who were ancient men, that had seen the first house, when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes,
wept with a loud voice; and many
shouted aloud for joy:
But many of the older priests, Levites, and family heads who had seen the first temple
wept loudly when they saw the foundation of this temple. Still, many others
shouted joyfully.
But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God;
but we ourselves together will build unto the LORD God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.
But Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the other heads of the families of Israel replied, “You have no part with us in building a house for our God, since we alone must build it for the LORD, the God of Israel, as Cyrus king of Persia has commanded us.”
But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews, that they could not cause them to cease, till the matter came to
Darius: and then they returned answer by letter concerning this matter.
But the eye of their God was on the elders of the Jews, so that they were not stopped until a report was sent to
Darius and written instructions about this matter were returned.
But after that our fathers had
provoked the God of heaven unto wrath, he gave them into the hand of
Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, the
Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon.
But since our fathers angered the God of heaven, He delivered them into the hand of
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the
Chaldean who destroyed this temple and carried away the people to Babylon.
But in the first year of Cyrus the king of Babylon the same king Cyrus made a decree to build this house of God.
In his first year, however, Cyrus king of Babylon issued a decree to rebuild this house of God.
Then came the same Sheshbazzar, and laid the foundation of the house of God which is in Jerusalem: and since that time even until now hath it been in building, and yet it is not finished.
So this Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundation of the house of God in Jerusalem, and from that time until now it has been under construction, but it has not yet been completed.”
For I was
ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and
horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him;
but his power and his wrath is against all them that
forsake him.
For I was
ashamed to ask the king for an
escort of soldiers and
horsemen to protect us from our enemies on the road, since we had told him, “The hand of our God is
gracious to all who seek Him,
but His great anger is against all who
forsake Him.”
And now for a little space grace hath been shewed from the LORD our God, to leave us a
remnant to escape, and to give us a
nail in his holy place, that our God may
lighten our eyes, and give us a little
reviving in our
bondage.
But now, for a brief moment, grace has come from the LORD our God to preserve for us a
remnant and to give us a
stake in His holy place. Even in our
bondage, our God has given us new life and light to our eyes.
For we were
bondmen; yet our God hath not
forsaken us in our
bondage,
but hath extended mercy unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a
reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair the desolations thereof, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.
Though we are slaves, our God has not
forsaken us in our
bondage,
but He has extended to us grace in the sight of the kings of Persia, giving us new life to rebuild the house of our God and repair its ruins, and giving us a wall of protection in Judah and Jerusalem.
But the people are many, and it is a time of much rain, and we are not able to stand without, neither is this a work of one day or two: for we are many that have
transgressed in this thing.
But there are many people here, and it is the
rainy season. We are not able to stay out in the open. Nor is this the work of one or two days, for we have
transgressed greatly in this matter.
But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the
uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there.
but if you return to Me and keep and practice My commandments, then even if your exiles have been banished to the
farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for My Name.’
Wherefore the king said unto me, Why is thy countenance
sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else
but sorrow of heart. Then I was very
sore afraid,
so the king said to me, “Why is your face
sad, though you are not ill? This could only be
sadness of the heart.” I was
overwhelmed with fear
But when
Sanballat the Horonite and
Tobiah the
Ammonite official heard about this, they were deeply disturbed that someone had come to seek the well-being of the Israelites.
Then I went on to the gate of the fountain, and to the king’s
pool:
but there was no place for the beast that was under me to pass.
Then I went on to the Fountain Gate and the King’s
Pool,
but there was no room for the animal under me to get through;
But when
Sanballat the Horonite,
Tobiah the
Ammonite official, and Geshem the Arab heard about this, they
mocked us and
ridiculed us, saying, “What is this you are doing? Are you rebelling against the king?”
Then answered I them, and said unto them, The God of heaven, he will
prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and build:
but ye have no portion, nor right, nor
memorial, in Jerusalem.
So I answered them and said, “The God of heaven is the One who will grant us success. We, His servants, will start rebuilding, but you have no portion, right, or claim in Jerusalem.”
But the fish gate did the sons of Hassenaah build, who also laid the beams thereof, and set up the doors thereof, the locks thereof, and the bars thereof.
The Fish Gate was rebuilt by the sons of Hassenaah. They laid its beams and
installed its doors, bolts, and bars.
And next unto them the Tekoites repaired; but their nobles put not their necks to the work of their Lord.
Next to him, the Tekoites made repairs, but their nobles did not put their shoulders to the work under their supervisors.
But the dung gate repaired Malchiah the son of Rechab, the ruler of part of Beth-haccerem; he build it, and set up the doors thereof, the locks thereof, and the bars thereof.
The Dung Gate was repaired by Malchijah son of Rechab, ruler of the district of Beth-haccherem. He rebuilt it and
installed its doors, bolts, and bars.
But the gate of the fountain repaired Shallun the son of
Col-hozeh, the ruler of part of
Mizpah; he built it, and covered it, and set up the doors thereof, the locks thereof, and the bars thereof, and the wall of the
pool of
Siloah by the king’s garden, and unto the stairs that go down from the city of David.
The Fountain Gate was repaired by Shallun son of
Col-hozeh, ruler of the district of
Mizpah. He rebuilt it, roofed it, and
installed its doors, bolts, and bars. He also repaired the wall of the
Pool of Shelah near the king’s garden, as far as the stairs that descend from the City of David.
But it came to pass, that when
Sanballat, and
Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the
Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very
wroth,
When
Sanballat and
Tobiah, together with the Arabs,
Ammonites, and Ashdodites, heard that the repair to the walls of Jerusalem was progressing and that the gaps were being closed, they were
furious,
For the builders, every one had his sword
girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded the
trumpet was by me.
And each of the builders worked with his sword
strapped at his side.
But the
trumpeter stayed beside me.
Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into
bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought unto
bondage already: neither is it in our power to
redeem them; for other men have our lands and vineyards.
We and our children are just like our countrymen and their children, yet we are subjecting our sons and daughters to slavery. Some of our daughters are already
enslaved,
but we are powerless to
redeem them because our fields and vineyards belong to others.”
