And they went up into the city: and when they were come into the city, behold, Samuel came out against them, for to go up to the high place.
So Saul and his servant went up toward the city, and as they were entering it, there was Samuel coming toward them on his way up to the high place.
Now the LORD had told Samuel in his ear a day before Saul came, saying,
Now on the day before Saul’s arrival, the LORD had revealed to Samuel,
And they arose early: and it came to pass about the spring of the day, that Samuel called Saul to the top of the house, saying, Up, that I may send thee away. And Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad.
They got up early in the morning, and just before
dawn Samuel called to Saul on the roof, “Get ready, and I will send you on your way!” So Saul arose, and both he and Samuel went outside together.
And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day.
As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God changed Saul’s heart, and all the signs came to pass that day.
And when they
came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God
came upon him, and he
prophesied among them.
When Saul and his servant arrived at Gibeah, a group of prophets met him. Then the Spirit of God
rushed upon him, and he
prophesied along with them.
And it
came to pass, when all that knew him
beforetime saw that, behold, he
prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that is come unto the son of
Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?
All those who had formerly known Saul and saw him
prophesying with the prophets asked one another, “What has happened to the son of
Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?”
And when he had made an end of
prophesying, he
came to the high place.
And when Saul had finished
prophesying, he went up to the high place.
And Saul’s uncle said unto him and to his servant,
Whither went ye? And he said, To seek the
asses: and when we saw that they were no where, we
came to Samuel.
Now Saul’s uncle asked him and his servant, “Where did you go?” “To look for the
donkeys,” Saul replied. “When we saw they were not to be found, we went to Samuel.”
Soon Nahash the
Ammonite came up and laid siege to
Jabesh-
gilead. All the men of
Jabesh said to him, “Make a treaty with us, and we will serve you.”
Then
came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the
tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and
wept.
When the messengers
came to Gibeah of Saul and relayed these words in the hearing of the people, they all
wept aloud.
And, behold, Saul
came after the
herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they
weep? And they told him the
tidings of the men of
Jabesh.
Just then Saul was returning from the field, behind his oxen. “What troubles the people?” asked Saul. “Why are they
weeping?” And they relayed to him the words of the men from
Jabesh.
And the Spirit of God
came upon Saul when he heard those
tidings, and his anger was
kindled greatly.
When Saul heard their words, the Spirit of God
rushed upon him, and he burned with great anger.
And he took a yoke of oxen, and
hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying,
Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they
came out with one consent.
He took a pair of oxen, cut them into pieces, and sent them by messengers throughout the land of Israel,
proclaiming, “This is what will be done to the oxen of
anyone who does not march behind Saul and Samuel.” Then the terror of the LORD fell upon the people, and they turned out as one man.
And they said unto the messengers that
came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of
Jabesh-
gilead, To
morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers
came and shewed it to the men of
Jabesh; and they were
glad.
And it was so on the
morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they
came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and
slew the
Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it
came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.
The next day Saul organized the troops into three divisions, and during the morning watch they invaded the
camp of the
Ammonites and slaughtered them, until the hottest part of the day. And the survivors were so scattered that no two of them were left together.
And when ye saw that Nahash the king of the children of
Ammon came against you, ye said unto me,
Nay; but a king shall reign over us: when the LORD your God was your king.
But when you saw that Nahash king of the
Ammonites was moving against you, you said to me, ‘No, we must have a king to rule over us’—even though the LORD your God was your king.
And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand
chariots, and six thousand
horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude: and they
came up, and pitched in
Michmash, eastward from Beth-
aven.
Now the Philistines assembled to fight against Israel with three thousand
chariots, six thousand
horsemen, and troops as numerous as the sand on the
seashore. They went up and
camped at
Michmash, east of Beth-
aven.
And he
tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel
came not to
Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.
And Saul waited seven days for the time appointed by Samuel, but Samuel did not come to
Gilgal, and the troops began to desert Saul.
And it
came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel
came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might
salute him.
Just as he finished offering the burnt offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to
greet him.
And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou
camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at
Michmash;
“What have you done?” Samuel asked. And Saul replied, “When I saw that the troops were deserting me, and that you did not come at the appointed time and the Philistines were gathering at
Michmash,
And Saul, and
Jonathan his son, and the people that were present with them, abode in Gibeah of Benjamin: but the Philistines
encamped in
Michmash.
Now Saul and
Jonathan his son and the troops with them were staying in Geba of Benjamin, while the Philistines
camped at
Michmash.
And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of Shual:
And raiders went out of the
Philistine camp in three divisions. One headed toward Ophrah in the land of Shual,
So it
came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor
spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and
Jonathan: but with Saul and with
Jonathan his son was there found.
So on the day of battle not a sword or
spear could be found in the hands of the troops with Saul and
Jonathan; only Saul and his son
Jonathan had weapons.
Now it
came to pass upon a day, that
Jonathan the son of Saul said unto the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over to the Philistines’ garrison, that is on the other side. But he told not his father.
One day
Jonathan son of Saul said to the young man bearing his
armor, “Come, let us cross over to the
Philistine outpost on the other side.” But
Jonathan did not tell his father.
And there was
trembling in the host, in the field, and among all the people: the garrison, and the spoilers, they also
trembled, and the earth
quaked: so it was a very great
trembling.
Then terror struck the Philistines in the
camp, in the field, and among all the people. Even those in the outposts and
raiding parties
trembled. Indeed, the earth
quaked and
panic spread from God.
And it came to pass, while Saul talked unto the priest, that the noise that was in the host of the Philistines went on and increased: and Saul said unto the priest, Withdraw thine hand.
While Saul was talking to the priest, the
commotion in the
Philistine camp continued to increase. So Saul said to the priest, “Withdraw your hand.”
And Saul and all the people that were with him assembled themselves, and they
came to the battle: and, behold, every man’s sword was against his fellow, and there was a very great
discomfiture.
Then Saul and all his troops assembled and marched to the battle, and they found the Philistines in total confusion, with each man
wielding the sword against his
neighbor.
Moreover the Hebrews that were with the Philistines before that time, which went up with them into the
camp from the country round about, even they also turned to be with the Israelites that were with Saul and
Jonathan.
And the Hebrews who had previously gone up into the surrounding
camps of the Philistines now went over to the Israelites who were with Saul and
Jonathan.
And all they of the land came to a wood; and there was honey upon the ground.
Then all the troops entered the forest, and there was honey on the ground.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt.
This is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘I witnessed what the
Amalekites did to the Israelites when they
ambushed them on their way up from Egypt.
Now go and
smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and
spare them not; but
slay both man and woman, infant and
suckling, ox and sheep,
camel and
ass.
Now go and attack the
Amalekites and
devote to destruction all that belongs to them. Do not
spare them, but put to death men and women, children and infants, oxen and sheep,
camels and
donkeys.’”
And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and laid wait in the valley.
Saul came to the city of Amalek and lay in wait in the valley.
And Saul said unto the
Kenites, Go, depart, get you down from among the
Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them: for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they
came up out of Egypt. So the
Kenites departed from among the
Amalekites.
And he
warned the
Kenites, “Since you showed kindness to all the Israelites when they
came up out of Egypt, go on and get away from the
Amalekites. Otherwise I will
sweep you away with them.” So the
Kenites moved away from the
Amalekites.
Then came the word of the LORD unto Samuel, saying,
Then the word of the LORD came to Samuel, saying,
And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, Saul
came to
Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a place, and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to
Gilgal.
Early in the morning Samuel got up to
confront Saul, but he was told, “Saul has gone to
Carmel, and behold, he has set up a monument for himself and has turned and gone down to
Gilgal.”
And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of the LORD: I have performed the commandment of the LORD.
When Samuel reached him, Saul said to him, “May the LORD
bless you. I have carried out the LORD’s instructions.”
Then said Samuel, Bring ye
hither to me
Agag the king of the
Amalekites. And
Agag came unto him delicately. And
Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past.
Then Samuel said, “Bring me
Agag king of the
Amalekites.”
Agag came to him
cheerfully, for he thought, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.”
And Samuel
came no more to see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel
mourned for Saul: and the LORD
repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.
And to the day of his death, Samuel never again visited Saul. Samuel
mourned for Saul, and the LORD
regretted that He had made Saul king over Israel.
And Samuel did that which the LORD spake, and
came to
Bethlehem. And the elders of the town
trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou
peaceably?
So Samuel did what the LORD had said and went to
Bethlehem. When the elders of the town met him, they
trembled and asked, “Do you come in peace?”
And it
came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD’S
anointed is before him.
When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and said, “Surely here before the LORD is His
anointed.”
Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and
anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD
came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to
Ramah.
So Samuel took the horn of oil and
anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and the Spirit of the LORD
rushed upon David from that day forward. Then Samuel set out and went to
Ramah.
And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer.
When David
came to Saul and entered his service, Saul
admired him greatly, and David became his
armor-bearer.
And it
came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an
harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
And whenever the spirit from God
came upon Saul, David would
pick up his
harp and play, and Saul would become well, and the spirit of distress would depart from him.
Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongeth to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephes-dammim.
Now the Philistines gathered their forces for war at Socoh in Judah, and they camped between Socoh and Azekah in Ephes-dammim.
And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in
array against the Philistines.
Saul and the men of Israel assembled and
camped in the Valley of Elah,
arraying themselves for battle against the Philistines.
And there went out a
champion out of the
camp of the Philistines, named
Goliath, of
Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.
And the
Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.
For forty days the
Philistine came forward every morning and evening to take his stand.
And
Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an
ephah of this
parched corn, and these ten
loaves, and run to the
camp to thy brethren;
One day
Jesse said to his son David, “Take this
ephah of
roasted grain and these ten
loaves of bread for your brothers and
hurry to their
camp.
And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as
Jesse had commanded him; and he
came to the
trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and
shouted for the battle.
So David got up early in the morning, left the flock with a keeper, loaded up, and set out as
Jesse had
instructed him. He reached the
camp as the army was marching out to its position and
shouting the battle cry.
And David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, and
came and
saluted his brethren.
Then David left his supplies in the care of the
quartermaster and ran to the battle line. When he arrived, he asked his brothers how they were doing.
And as he talked with them, behold, there
came up the
champion, the
Philistine of
Gath,
Goliath by name, out of the armies of the Philistines, and spake according to the same words: and David heard them.
And as he was speaking with them, suddenly the
champion named
Goliath, the
Philistine from
Gath,
came forward from the Philistines and
shouted his usual words, which David also heard.
And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab’s anger was
kindled against David, and he said, Why
camest thou down
hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the
naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle.
Now when David’s oldest brother Eliab heard him speaking to the men, his anger burned against David. “Why have you come down here?” he asked. “And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and wickedness of heart—you have come down to see the battle!”
And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:
David replied, “Your servant has been tending his father’s sheep, and whenever a lion or a bear came and carried off a lamb from the flock,
And the
Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him.
Now the
Philistine came closer and closer to David, with his shield-bearer before him.
And it
came to pass, when the
Philistine arose, and
came and drew
nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the
Philistine.
As the
Philistine started forward to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him.
And the children of Israel returned from
chasing after the Philistines, and they
spoiled their tents.
When the Israelites returned from their pursuit of the Philistines, they
plundered their
camps.
And it
came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of
Jonathan was
knit with the soul of David, and
Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
After David had finished speaking with Saul, the souls of
Jonathan and David were
knit together, and
Jonathan loved him as himself.
And it
came to pass as they
came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the
Philistine, that the women
came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick.
As the troops were returning home after David had killed the
Philistine, the women
came out of all the cities of Israel to meet King Saul with singing and dancing, with joyful songs, and with tambourines and other instruments.
And it
came to pass on the
morrow, that the evil spirit from God
came upon Saul, and he
prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a
javelin in Saul’s hand.
The next day a spirit of distress sent from God
came upon Saul, and he
prophesied inside the house while David played the
harp as usual. Now Saul was holding a
spear,
Therefore Saul removed him from him, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.
Therefore Saul sent David away and gave him command of a thousand men. David led the troops out to battle and back,
But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he went out and came in before them.
But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he was leading them out to battle and back.
But it came to pass at the time when Merab Saul’s daughter should have been given to David, that she was given unto Adriel the Meholathite to wife.
So when it was time to give Saul’s daughter Merab to David, she was given in marriage to Adriel of Meholah.
Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it
came to pass, after they went forth, that David
behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.
Every time the
Philistine commanders
came out for battle, David was more successful than all of Saul’s officers, so that his name was highly esteemed.
And the evil spirit from the LORD was upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his
javelin in his hand: and David played with his hand.
But as Saul was sitting in his house with his
spear in his hand, a spirit of distress from the LORD
came upon him. While David was playing the
harp,
So David fled, and escaped, and
came to Samuel to
Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and dwelt in Naioth.
So David ran away and escaped. And he went to Samuel at
Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him. Then he and Samuel went to Naioth and stayed there.
And Saul sent messengers to take David: and when they saw the company of the prophets
prophesying, and Samuel standing as appointed over them, the Spirit of God was upon the messengers of Saul, and they also
prophesied.
he sent messengers to capture him. But when they saw the group of prophets
prophesying, with Samuel leading them, the Spirit of God
came upon them, and Saul’s messengers also began to
prophesy.
Then went he also to
Ramah, and
came to a great well that is in Sechu: and he asked and said, Where are Samuel and David? And one said, Behold, they be at Naioth in
Ramah.
Finally, Saul himself left for
Ramah and
came to the large
cistern at Secu, where he asked, “Where are Samuel and David?” “At Naioth in
Ramah,” he was told.
And he went thither to Naioth in
Ramah: and the Spirit of God was upon him also, and he went on, and
prophesied, until he
came to Naioth in
Ramah.
So Saul went to Naioth in
Ramah. But the Spirit of God
came upon even Saul, and he walked along
prophesying until he
came to Naioth in
Ramah.
And David fled from Naioth in
Ramah, and
came and said before
Jonathan, What have I done? what is mine iniquity? and what is my sin before thy father, that he seeketh my life?
Then David fled from Naioth in
Ramah. He
came to
Jonathan and asked, “What have I done? What is my iniquity? How have I
sinned against your father, that he wants to take my life?”
And it
came to pass on the
morrow, which was the second day of the month, that David’s place was empty: and Saul said unto
Jonathan his son, Wherefore cometh not the son of
Jesse to meat, neither
yesterday, nor to day?
But on the day after the New Moon, the second day, David’s place was still empty, and Saul asked his son
Jonathan, “Why hasn’t the son of
Jesse come to the meal either
yesterday or
today?”
And it
came to pass in the morning, that
Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little
lad with him.
In the morning
Jonathan went out to the field for the appointment with David, and a small boy was with him.
Then
came David to
Nob to
Ahimelech the priest: and
Ahimelech was afraid at the meeting of David, and said unto him, Why art thou alone, and no man with thee?
Then David
came to
Nob, to
Ahimelech the priest. And when
Ahimelech met David, he
trembled and asked him, “Why are you alone? Why is no one with you?”
And David answered the priest, and said unto him, Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days, since I
came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in a manner common,
yea, though it were
sanctified this day in the vessel.
David answered, “Women have indeed been kept from us, as is usual when I set out. And the
equipment of the young men is holy, as it is even on common missions, and all the more at this time.”
And the prophet
Gad said unto David,
Abide not in the hold; depart, and get thee into the land of Judah. Then David departed, and
came into the forest of Hareth.
Then the prophet
Gad said to David, “Do not stay in the
stronghold. Depart and go into the land of Judah.” So David left and went to the forest of Hereth.
Then the king sent to call
Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father’s house, the priests that were in
Nob: and they
came all of them to the king.
Then the king sent messengers to
summon Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and his father’s whole family, who were priests at
Nob. And all of them
came to the king.
And it
came to pass, when
Abiathar the son of
Ahimelech fled to David to Keilah, that he
came down with an
ephod in his hand.
And
Jonathan Saul’s son arose, and went to David into the wood, and strengthened his hand in God.
And Saul’s son
Jonathan came to David in Horesh and strengthened his hand in God,
Then
came up the Ziphites to Saul to Gibeah, saying,
Doth not David hide himself with us in strong holds in the wood, in the hill of Hachilah, which is on the south of Jeshimon?
Then the Ziphites came up to Saul at Gibeah and said, “Is not David hiding among us in the strongholds at Horesh, on the hill of Hachilah south of Jeshimon?
Saul also and his men went to seek him. And they told David: wherefore he came down into a rock, and abode in the wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard that, he pursued after David in the wilderness of Maon.
and Saul and his men went to seek him. When David was told about it, he went down to the rock and stayed in the Wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard of this, he pursued David there.
But there
came a
messenger unto Saul, saying,
Haste thee, and come; for the Philistines have invaded the land.
Then a
messenger came to Saul, saying, “Come quickly, for the Philistines have
raided the land!”
And it came to pass, when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Behold, David is in the wilderness of En-gedi.
After Saul had returned from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, “David is in the wilderness of En-gedi.”
And he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet: and David and his men remained in the sides of the cave.
Soon Saul
came to the sheepfolds along the road, where there was a cave, and he went in to
relieve himself. And David and his men were hiding in the recesses of the cave.
And it
came to pass afterward, that David’s heart
smote him, because he had cut off Saul’s
skirt.
Afterward, David’s conscience was
stricken because he had cut off the corner of Saul’s
robe.
And it
came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and
wept.
When David had finished saying these things, Saul called back, “Is that your voice, David my son?” Then Saul
wept aloud And when David’s young men came, they spake to Nabal according to all those words in the name of David, and ceased.
When David’s young men arrived, they relayed all these words to Nabal on behalf of David. Then they waited.
So David’s young men turned their way, and went again, and came and told him all those sayings.
So David’s men turned around and went back, and they relayed to him all these words.
And it was so, as she
rode on the
ass, that she
came down by the
covert of the hill, and, behold, David and his men
came down against her; and she met them.
As
Abigail came riding her
donkey into a mountain
ravine, she saw David and his men coming down toward her, and she met them.
And
Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal’s heart was
merry within him, for he was very
drunken: wherefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light.
When
Abigail returned to Nabal, there he was in the house, holding a feast fit for a king, in high spirits and very
drunk. So she told him nothing until morning light.
But it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became as a stone.
In the morning when Nabal was
sober, his wife told him about these events, and his heart failed within him and he became like a stone.
And it
came to pass about ten days after, that the LORD
smote Nabal, that he died.
About ten days later, the LORD struck Nabal dead.
And when the servants of David were come to
Abigail to
Carmel, they spake unto her, saying, David sent us unto thee to take thee to him to wife.
When his servants
came to
Abigail at
Carmel, they said, “David has sent us to take you as his wife.”
And the Ziphites
came unto Saul to Gibeah, saying,
Doth not David hide himself in the hill of Hachilah, which is before Jeshimon?
Then the Ziphites came to Saul at Gibeah and said, “Is not David hiding on the hill of Hachilah, opposite Jeshimon?”
And Saul pitched in the hill of Hachilah, which is before Jeshimon, by the way. But David abode in the wilderness, and he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness.
Saul camped beside the road at the hill of Hachilah opposite Jeshimon, but David was living in the wilderness. When he realized that Saul had followed him there,
And David arose, and
came to the place where Saul had pitched: and David
beheld the place where Saul lay, and
Abner the son of
Ner, the captain of his host: and Saul lay in the
trench, and the people pitched round about him.
Then David set out and went to the place where Saul had
camped. He saw the place where Saul and
Abner son of
Ner, the general of his army, had
lain down. Saul was lying inside the inner circle of the
camp, with the troops
camped around him.
Then answered David and said to
Ahimelech the Hittite, and to
Abishai the son of Zeruiah, brother to
Joab, saying, Who will go down with me to Saul to the
camp? And
Abishai said, I will go down with thee.
And David asked
Ahimelech the Hittite and
Abishai son of Zeruiah,
Joab’s brother, “Who will go down with me to Saul in the
camp?” “I will go with you,” answered
Abishai.
So David and
Abishai came to the people by night: and, behold, Saul lay sleeping within the
trench, and his
spear stuck in the ground at his
bolster: but
Abner and the people lay round about him.
That night David and
Abishai came to the troops, and Saul was lying there
asleep in the inner circle of the
camp, with his
spear stuck in the ground by his head. And
Abner and the troops were lying around him.
And David said to
Abner, Art not thou a
valiant man? and who is like to thee in Israel? wherefore then hast thou not kept thy lord the king? for there
