For the saying which he
cried by the word of the LORD against the altar in
Bethel, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely
come to pass.
for the message that he
cried out by the word of the LORD against the altar in
Bethel and against all the shrines on the high places in the cities of Samaria will surely
come to pass.”
And the LORD said unto
Ahijah, Behold, the wife of
Jeroboam cometh to ask a thing of thee for her son; for he is sick: thus and thus shalt thou say unto her: for it shall be, when she
cometh in, that she shall
feign herself to be another woman.
But the LORD had said to
Ahijah, “Behold, the wife of
Jeroboam is coming to ask you about her son, for he is ill. You are to say such and such to her, because when she arrives, she will be
disguised.”
And it was so, when
Ahijah heard the sound of her feet as she came in at the door, that he said,
Come in, thou wife of
Jeroboam; why feignest thou
thyself to be another? for I am sent to thee with heavy
tidings.
So when
Ahijah heard the sound of her feet entering the door, he said, “
Come in, wife of
Jeroboam! Why are you
disguised? For I have been sent to you with bad news.
And all Israel shall
mourn for him, and
bury him: for he only of
Jeroboam shall
come to the grave, because in him there is found some good thing toward the LORD God of Israel in the house of
Jeroboam.
All Israel will
mourn for him and
bury him. For this is the only one belonging to
Jeroboam who will receive a proper burial, because only in him has the LORD, the God of Israel, found any good in the house of
Jeroboam.
And
Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah, and built
Ramah, that he might not suffer any to go out or
come in to
Asa king of Judah.
Baasha king of Israel went to war against Judah and fortified
Ramah to prevent
anyone from leaving or entering the territory of
Asa king of Judah.
There is a league between me and thee, and between my father and thy father: behold, I have sent unto thee a present of silver and gold;
come and break thy league with
Baasha king of Israel, that he may depart from me.
“Let there be a treaty between me and you, between my father and your father. See, I have sent you a gift of silver and gold. Now go and break your treaty with
Baasha king of Israel, so that he will withdraw from me.”
And she said unto
Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou
come unto me to call my sin to
remembrance, and to
slay my son?
“O man of God,” said the woman to
Elijah, “what have you done to me? Have you
come to remind me of my iniquity and cause the death of my son?”
And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and
cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child’s soul
come into him again.
Then he stretched himself out over the child three times and
cried out to the LORD, “O LORD my God, please let this boy’s life return to him!”
And it shall
come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of the LORD shall carry thee
whither I know not; and so when I
come and tell
Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he shall
slay me: but I thy servant fear the LORD from my youth.
I do not know where the Spirit of the LORD may carry you off when I leave you. Then when I go and tell
Ahab and he does not find you, he will kill me. But I, your servant, have feared the LORD from my youth.
And
Elijah said unto all the people,
Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down.
Then
Elijah said to all the people, “
Come near to me.” So all the people approached him, and he repaired the altar of the LORD that had been
torn down.
And
Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the LORD came, saying, Israel shall be thy name:
And
Elijah took twelve stones, one for each tribe of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD had
come and said, “Israel shall be your name.”
And the LORD said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou
comest,
anoint Hazael to be king over Syria:
Then the LORD said to him, “Go back by the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you arrive, you are to
anoint Hazael as king over
Aram.
And it shall
come to pass, that him that escapeth the sword of
Hazael shall
Jehu slay: and him that escapeth from the sword of
Jehu shall
Elisha slay.
And the young men of the princes of the provinces went out first; and Ben-
hadad sent out, and they told him, saying, There are men
come out of Samaria.
And the young officers of the district governors marched out first. Now Ben-
hadad had sent out scouts, who reported to him, “Men are marching out of Samaria.”
And he said, Whether they be come out for peace, take them alive; or whether they be come out for war, take them alive.
“If they have marched out in peace,” he said, “take them alive. Even if they have marched out for war, take them alive.”
And the prophet came to the king of Israel, and said unto him, Go,
strengthen thyself, and mark, and see what thou doest: for at the return of the year the king of Syria will
come up against thee.
Afterward, the prophet approached the king of Israel and said, “Go and
strengthen your position, and take note what you must do, for in the spring the king of
Aram will
come up against you.”
Now the men did
diligently observe whether any thing would
come from him, and did
hastily catch it: and they said, Thy brother Ben-
hadad. Then he said, Go ye, bring him. Then Ben-
hadad came forth to him; and he caused him to
come up into the
chariot.
Now the men were looking for a sign of hope, and they quickly
grasped at this word and replied, “
Yes, your brother Ben-
hadad.” “Go and get him!” said the king. Then Ben-
hadad came out, and
Ahab had him
come up into his
chariot.
And say, Thus saith the king, Put this fellow in the prison, and feed him with bread of
affliction and with water of
affliction, until I
come in peace.
and tell them that this is what the king says: ‘Put this man in prison and feed him only bread and water until I return safely.’”
Now therefore thus saith the LORD, Thou shalt not
come down from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die. And
Elijah departed.
Therefore this is what the LORD says: ‘You will not get up from the bed on which you are lying. You will surely die.’” So
Elijah departed.
And they said unto him, There came a man up to meet us, and said unto us, Go, turn again unto the king that sent you, and say unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Is it not because there is not a God in Israel, that thou sendest to
enquire of
Baal-
zebub the god of
Ekron? therefore thou shalt not
come down from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.
They replied, “A man came up to meet us and said, ‘Go back to the king who sent you and tell him that this is what the LORD says: Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending these men to inquire of
Baal-
zebub, the god of
Ekron? Therefore you will not get up from the bed on which you are lying. You will surely die.’”
Then the king sent unto him a captain of fifty with his fifty. And he went up to him: and, behold, he sat on the top of an hill. And he spake unto him, Thou man of God, the king hath said, Come down.
Then King
Ahaziah sent to
Elijah a captain with his company of fifty men. So the captain went up to
Elijah, who was sitting on top of a hill, and said to him, “Man of God, the king declares, ‘
Come down!’”
And
Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, If I be a man of God, then let fire
come down from heaven, and
consume thee and thy fifty. And there came down fire from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.
Elijah answered the captain, “If I am a man of God, may fire
come down from heaven and
consume you and your fifty men.” And fire came down from heaven and consumed the captain and his fifty men.
Again also he sent unto him another captain of fifty with his fifty. And he answered and said unto him, O man of God, thus hath the king said, Come down quickly.
So the king sent to
Elijah another captain with his fifty men. And the captain said to
Elijah, “Man of God, the king declares, ‘
Come down at once!’”
And
Elijah answered and said unto them, If I be a man of God, let fire
come down from heaven, and
consume thee and thy fifty. And the fire of God came down from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.
Again
Elijah replied, “If I am a man of God, may fire
come down from heaven and
consume you and your fifty men.” And the fire of God came down from heaven and consumed the captain and his fifty men.
Behold, there came fire down from heaven, and burnt up the two captains of the former
fifties with their
fifties: therefore let my life now be precious in thy sight.
Behold, fire has come down from heaven and consumed the first two captains of fifty, with all their men. But now may my life be precious in your sight.”
And he said unto him, Thus saith the LORD,
Forasmuch as thou hast sent messengers to
enquire of
Baal-
zebub the god of
Ekron, is it not because there is no God in Israel to
enquire of his word? therefore thou shalt not
come down off that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.
And
Elijah said to King
Ahaziah, “This is what the LORD says: Is there really no God in Israel for you to inquire of His word? Is that why you have sent messengers to inquire of
Baal-
zebub, the god of
Ekron? Therefore you will not get up from the bed on which you are lying. You will surely die.”
And when all the Moabites heard that the kings were come up to fight against them, they gathered all that were able to put on armour, and upward, and stood in the border.
Now all the Moabites had heard that the kings had come up to fight against them. So all who could bear arms, young and old, were summoned and stationed at the border.
Now there
cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto
Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the LORD: and the
creditor is
come to take unto him my two sons to be
bondmen.
Now the wife of one of the sons of the prophets
cried out to
Elisha, “Your servant, my husband, is dead, and you know that your servant feared the LORD. And now his
creditor is coming to take my two children as his slaves!”
And when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, and thou shalt set aside that which is full.
Then go inside, shut the door behind you and your sons, and pour oil into all these jars, setting the full ones aside.”
And she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is an holy man of God, which passeth by us continually.
Then the woman said to her husband, “Behold, now I know that the one who often comes our way is a holy man of God.
Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a
stool, and a
candlestick: and it shall be, when he
cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither.
Please let us make a small room
upstairs and put in it a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp for him. Then when he
comes to us, he can stay there.”
And she called unto her husband, and said, Send me, I pray thee, one of the young men, and one of the
asses, that I may run to the man of God, and
come again.
And the woman called her husband and said, “Please send me one of the servants and one of the
donkeys, that I may go quickly to the man of God and return.”
And when
Elisha was
come into the house, behold, the child was dead, and laid upon his bed.
When
Elisha reached the house, there was the boy lying dead on his bed.
And he called Gehazi, and said, Call this Shunammite. So he called her. And when she was come in unto him, he said, Take up thy son.
Elisha summoned Gehazi and said, “Call the Shunammite woman.” So he called her and she came. Then
Elisha said, “
Pick up your son.”
And he brought the letter to the king of Israel, saying, Now when this letter is
come unto thee, behold, I have
therewith sent
Naaman my servant to thee, that thou mayest recover him of his
leprosy.
And the letter that he took to the king of Israel stated: “With this letter I am sending my servant
Naaman, so that you may cure him of his
leprosy.”
And it was so, when
Elisha the man of God had heard that the king of Israel had rent his clothes, that he sent to the king, saying, Wherefore hast thou rent thy clothes? let him
come now to me, and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel.
Now when
Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had
torn his clothes, he sent a message to the king: “Why have you
torn your clothes? Please let the man
come to me, and he will know that there is a prophet in Israel.”
And
Elisha sent a
messenger unto him, saying, Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and thy flesh shall
come again to thee, and thou shalt be clean.
Then
Elisha sent him a
messenger, who said, “Go and wash
yourself seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will be restored, and you will be clean.”
But
Naaman was
wroth, and went away, and said, Behold, I thought, He will surely
come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of the LORD his God, and strike his hand over the place, and recover the
leper.
But
Naaman went away
angry, saying, “I thought that he would surely
come out, stand and call on the name of the LORD his God, and wave his hand over the spot to cure my
leprosy.
And he said, All is well. My master hath sent me, saying, Behold, even now there be come to me from mount Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets: give them, I pray thee, a talent of silver, and two changes of garments.
“Everything is all right,” Gehazi replied. “My master has sent me to say, ‘I have just now discovered that two young men from the sons of the prophets have come to me from the hill country of Ephraim. Please give them a talent of silver and two sets of clothing.’”
But he went in, and stood before his master. And
Elisha said unto him, Whence
comest thou, Gehazi? And he said, Thy servant went no
whither.
When Gehazi went in and stood before his master,
Elisha asked him, “Gehazi, where have you been?” “Your servant did not go
anywhere,” he replied.
And one said, Be content, I pray thee, and go with thy servants. And he answered, I will go.
Then one of them said, “Please come with your servants.” “I will come,” he replied.
And the man of God sent unto the king of Israel, saying,
Beware that thou pass not such a place; for thither the Syrians are
come down.
Then the man of God sent word to the king of Israel: “Be careful passing by this place, for the Arameans are going down there.”
And it came to pass, when they were
come into Samaria, that
Elisha said, LORD, open the eyes of these men, that they may see. And the LORD opened their eyes, and they saw; and, behold, they were in the midst of Samaria.
When they had entered Samaria,
Elisha said, “O LORD, open the eyes of these men that they may see.” Then the LORD opened their eyes, and they looked around and discovered that they were in Samaria.
And he prepared great provision for them: and when they had eaten and
drunk, he sent them away, and they went to their master. So the bands of Syria came no more into the land of Israel.
So the king prepared a great feast for them, and after they had finished eating and drinking, he sent them away, and they returned to their master. And the
Aramean raiders did not
come into the land of Israel again.
But
Elisha sat in his house, and the elders sat with him; and the king sent a man from before him: but
ere the
messenger came to him, he said to the elders, See ye how this son of a murderer hath sent to take away mine head? look, when the
messenger cometh, shut the door, and hold him fast at the door: is not the sound of his master’s feet behind him?
Now
Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. The king sent a
messenger ahead, but before he arrived,
Elisha said to the elders, “Do you see how this murderer has sent someone to cut off my head? Look, when the
messenger comes, shut the door to keep him out. Is not the sound of his master’s footsteps behind him?”
If we say, We will enter into the city, then the famine is in the city, and we shall die there: and if we sit still here, we die also. Now therefore come, and let us fall unto the host of the Syrians: if they save us alive, we shall live; and if they kill us, we shall but die.
If we say, ‘Let us go into the city,’ we will die there from the famine in the city; but if we sit here, we will also die. So come now, let us go over to the camp of the Arameans. If they let us live, we will live; if they kill us, we will die.”
And they rose up in the
twilight, to go unto the camp of the Syrians: and when they were
come to the
uttermost part of the camp of Syria, behold, there was no man there.
So they arose at
twilight and went to the camp of the Arameans. But when they came to the outskirts of the camp, there was not a man to be found.
For the Lord had made the host of the Syrians to hear a noise of
chariots, and a noise of horses, even the noise of a great host: and they said one to another, Lo, the king of Israel hath
hired against us the kings of the
Hittites, and the kings of the Egyptians, to
come upon us.
For the Lord had caused the Arameans to hear the sound of
chariots, horses, and a great army, so that they said to one another, “Look, the king of Israel must have
hired the kings of the
Hittites and Egyptians to attack us.”
Then they said one to another, We do not well: this day is a day of good
tidings, and we hold our peace: if we
tarry till the morning light, some mischief will
come upon us: now therefore
come, that we may go and tell the king’s household.
Finally, they said to one another, “We are not doing what is right.
Today is a day of good news. If we are silent and wait until morning light, our sin will overtake us. Now, therefore, let us go and tell the king’s household.”
And the king arose in the night, and said unto his servants, I will now
shew you what the Syrians have done to us. They know that we be
hungry; therefore are they gone out of the camp to hide themselves in the field, saying, When they
come out of the city, we shall catch them alive, and get into the city.
So the king got up in the night and said to his servants, “Let me tell you what the Arameans have done to us. They know we are
starving, so they have left the camp to hide in the field, thinking, ‘When they
come out of the city, we will take them alive and enter the city.’”
And the king appointed the lord on whose hand he
leaned to have the charge of the gate: and the people
trode upon him in the gate, and he died, as the man of God had said, who spake when the king came down to him.
Now the king had appointed the officer on whose arm he
leaned to be in charge of the gate, but the people
trampled him in the
gateway, and he died, just as the man of God had
foretold when the king had
come to him.
Then spake
Elisha unto the woman, whose son he had restored to life, saying, Arise, and go thou and thine household, and
sojourn wheresoever thou canst
sojourn: for the LORD hath called for a famine; and it shall also
come upon the land seven years.
Now
Elisha had said to the woman whose son he had restored to life, “Arise, you and your household; go and live as a foreigner wherever you can. For the LORD has decreed a seven-year famine, and it has already
come to the land.”
And
Elisha came to Damascus; and Ben-
hadad the king of Syria was sick; and it was told him, saying, The man of God is
come hither.
Then
Elisha came to Damascus while Ben-
hadad king of
Aram was sick, and the king was told, “The man of God has
come here.”
And when thou
comest thither, look out there
Jehu the son of
Jehoshaphat the son of Nimshi, and go in, and make him arise up from among his brethren, and carry him to an inner chamber;
When you arrive, look for
Jehu son of
Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi. Go in, get him away from his companions, and take him to an inner room.
Then
Jehu came forth to the servants of his lord: and one said unto him, Is all well? wherefore came this
mad fellow to thee? And he said unto them, Ye know the man, and his communication.
When
Jehu went out to the servants of his master, they asked, “Is everything all right? Why did this
madman come to you?” “You know his kind and their
babble,” he replied.
And there stood a
watchman on the tower in
Jezreel, and he
spied the company of
Jehu as he came, and said, I see a company. And
Joram said, Take an
horseman, and send to meet them, and let him say, Is it peace?
Now the
watchman standing on the tower in
Jezreel saw
Jehu’s troops approaching, and he called out, “I see a company of troops!” “Choose a rider,”
Joram commanded. “Send him out to meet them and ask, ‘Have you
come in peace?’”
So there went one on
horseback to meet him, and said, Thus saith the king, Is it peace? And
Jehu said, What hast thou to do with peace? turn thee behind me. And the
watchman told, saying, The
messenger came to them, but he
cometh not again.
So a
horseman rode off to meet
Jehu and said, “This is what the king asks: ‘Have you
come in peace?’” “What do you know about peace?”
Jehu replied. “Fall in behind me.” And the
watchman reported, “The
messenger reached them, but he is not coming back.”
Then he sent out a second on
horseback, which came to them, and said, Thus saith the king, Is it peace? And
Jehu answered, What hast thou to do with peace? turn thee behind me.
So the king sent out a second
horseman, who went to them and said, “This is what the king asks: ‘Have you
come in peace?’” “What do you know about peace?”
Jehu replied. “Fall in behind me.”
And the
watchman told, saying, He came even unto them, and
cometh not again: and the driving is like the driving of
Jehu the son of Nimshi; for he driveth
furiously.
Again the
watchman reported, “He reached them, but he is not coming back. And the
charioteer is driving like
Jehu son of Nimshi—he is driving like a
madman!”
And it came to pass, when
Joram saw
Jehu, that he said, Is it peace,
Jehu? And he answered, What peace, so long as the whoredoms of thy mother
Jezebel and her witchcrafts are so many?
And when
Jehu was
come to
Jezreel,
Jezebel heard of it; and she painted her face, and
tired her head, and looked out at a window.
Now when
Jehu arrived in
Jezreel,
Jezebel heard of it. So she painted her eyes, adorned her head, and looked down from a window.
And as
Jehu entered in at the gate, she said, Had Zimri peace, who
slew his master?
And as
Jehu entered the gate, she asked, “Have you
come in peace, O Zimri, murderer of your master?”
And when he was
come in, he did eat and drink, and said, Go, see now this
cursed woman, and
bury her: for she is a king’s daughter.
Then
Jehu went in and
ate and
drank. “Take care of this
cursed woman,” he said, “and
bury her, for she was the daughter of a king.”
Now as soon as this letter
cometh to you, seeing your master’s sons are with you, and there are with you
chariots and horses, a
fenced city also, and armour;
“When this letter arrives, since your master’s sons are with you and you have
chariots and horses, a fortified city and
weaponry,
Then he wrote a letter the second time to them, saying, If ye be mine, and if ye will
hearken unto my voice, take ye the heads of the men your master’s sons, and
come to me to
Jezreel by to
morrow this time. Now the king’s sons, being seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, which brought them up.
Then
Jehu wrote them a second letter and said: “If you are on my side, and if you will obey me, then bring the heads of your master’s sons to me at
Jezreel by this time
tomorrow.” Now the sons of the king, seventy in all, were being brought up by the leading men of the city.
Jehu met with the brethren of
Ahaziah king of Judah, and said, Who are ye? And they answered, We are the brethren of
Ahaziah; and we go down to
salute the children of the king and the children of the queen.
Jehu met some relatives of
Ahaziah king of Judah and asked, “Who are you?” “We are relatives of
Ahaziah,” they answered, “and we have
come down to
greet the sons of the king and of the queen mother.”
And he said,
Come with me, and see my zeal for the LORD. So they made him
ride in his
chariot.
saying, “
Come with me and see my zeal for the LORD!” So he had him
ride in his
chariot.
And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, that
Jehu said to the guard and to the captains, Go in, and
slay them; let none
come forth. And they
smote them with the edge of the sword; and the guard and the captains cast them out, and went to the city of the house of
Baal.
When he had finished making the burnt offering,
Jehu said to the guards and officers, “Go in and kill them. Do not let
anyone out.” So the guards and officers put them to the sword, threw the bodies out, and went into the inner room of the temple of
Baal.
And he commanded them, saying, This is the thing that ye shall do; A third part of you that enter in on the sabbath shall even be keepers of the watch of the king’s house;
and commanded them, “This is what you are to do: A third of you who come on duty on the Sabbath shall guard the royal palace,
And ye shall compass the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand: and he that cometh within the ranges, let him be slain: and be ye with the king as he goeth out and as he cometh in.
You must
surround the king with weapons in hand, and
anyone who approaches the ranks must be put to death. You must stay close to the king wherever he goes.”
And the captains over the hundreds did according to all things that Jehoiada the priest commanded: and they took every man his men that were to come in on the sabbath, with them that should go out on the sabbath, and came to Jehoiada the priest.
So the commanders of hundreds did everything that Jehoiada the priest had ordered. Each of them took his men—those coming on duty on the Sabbath and those going off duty—and came to Jehoiada the priest.
And Jehoash said to the priests, All the money of the dedicated things that is brought into the house of the LORD, even the money of every one that passeth the account, the money that every man is set at, and all the money that cometh into any man’s heart to bring into the house of the LORD,
Then
Joash said to the priests, “Collect all the money brought as sacred gifts into the house of the LORD—the census money, the money from vows, and the money brought
voluntarily into the house of the LORD.
But Jehoiada the priest took a chest, and bored a hole in the
lid of it, and set it beside the altar, on the right side as one
cometh into the house of the LORD: and the priests that kept the door put therein all the money that was brought into the house of the LORD.
Then Jehoiada the priest took a chest, bored a hole in its
lid, and set it beside the altar on the right side as one enters the house of the LORD. There the priests who guarded the
threshold put all the money brought into the house of the LORD.
And
Elisha died, and they buried him. And the bands of the Moabites invaded the land at the coming in of the year.
And
Elisha died and was buried. Now the
Moabite raiders used to
come into the land every spring.
Then
Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash, the son of
Jehoahaz son of
Jehu, king of Israel, saying,
Come, let us look one another in the face.
Then
Amaziah sent messengers to the king of Israel Jehoash son of
Jehoahaz, the son of
Jehu. “
Come, let us meet face to face,” he said.
So
Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, saying, I am thy servant and thy son:
come up, and save me out of the hand of the king of Syria, and out of the hand of the king of Israel, which rise up against me.
So
Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, saying, “I am your servant and your son.
Come up and save me from the hands of the kings of
Aram and Israel, who are rising up against me.”
And when the king was
come from Damascus, the king saw the altar: and the king approached to the altar, and offered
thereon.
When the king came back from Damascus and saw the altar, he approached it and presented offerings on it.
And the king of Assyria sent
Tartan and Rabsaris and
Rab-shakeh from
Lachish to king
Hezekiah with a great host against Jerusalem. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. And when they were
come up, they came and stood by the
conduit of the upper
pool, which is in the
highway of the fuller’s field.
Nevertheless, the king of Assyria sent the
Tartan, the Rabsaris, and the
Rabshakeh, along with a great army, from
Lachish to King
Hezekiah at Jerusalem. They advanced up to Jerusalem and stationed themselves by the
aqueduct of the upper
pool, on the road to the
Launderer’s Field.
Am I now come up without the LORD against this place to destroy it? The LORD said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.
So now, was it apart from the LORD that I have come up against this place to destroy it? The LORD Himself said to me, ‘Go up against this land and destroy it.’”
Hearken not to
Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and
come out to me, and then eat ye every man of his own vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his
cistern:
Do not
listen to
Hezekiah, for this is what the king of Assyria says: Make peace with me and
come out to me. Then every one of you will eat from his own vine and his own fig tree, and drink water from his own
cistern,
Until I
come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of oil olive and of honey, that ye may live, and not die: and
hearken not unto
Hezekiah, when he persuadeth you, saying, The LORD will deliver us.
until I
come and take you away to a land like your own—a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive trees and honey—so that you may live and not die. But do not
listen to
Hezekiah, for he misleads you when he says, ‘The LORD will deliver us.’
And they said unto him, Thus saith
Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of
rebuke, and
blasphemy: for the children are
come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.
to tell him, “This is what
Hezekiah says:
Today is a day of distress,
rebuke, and disgrace; for children have
come to the point of birth, but there is no strength to deliver them.
And when he heard say of Tirhakah king of
Ethiopia, Behold, he is
come out to fight against thee: he sent messengers again unto
Hezekiah, saying,
By the messengers thou hast reproached the Lord, and hast said, With the multitude of my
chariots I am
come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of
Lebanon, and will cut down the tall
cedar trees thereof, and the choice
fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the lodgings of his borders, and into the forest of his
Carmel.
Through your servants you have
taunted the Lord, and you have said: “With my many
chariots I have ascended to the heights of the mountains, to the remote peaks of
Lebanon. I have cut down its tallest cedars, the finest of its
cypresses. I have reached its
farthest outposts, the densest of its forests.
Because thy
rage against me and thy
tumult is
come up into mine ears, therefore I will put my hook in thy nose, and my
bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest.
Because your
rage and
arrogance against Me have reached My ears, I will put My hook in your nose and My
bit in your mouth; I will send you back the way you came.’
Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not
come into this city, nor shoot an
arrow there, nor
come before it with shield, nor cast a bank against it.
So this is what the LORD says about the king of Assyria: ‘He will not enter this city or shoot an
arrow into it. He will not
come before it with a shield or build up a siege
ramp against it.
By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city, saith the LORD.
He will go back the way he came, and he will not enter this city,’ declares the LORD.
Then came Isaiah the prophet unto king
Hezekiah, and said unto him, What said these men? and from whence came they unto thee? And
Hezekiah said, They are
come from a far country, even from Babylon.
Then the prophet Isaiah went to King
Hezekiah and asked, “Where did those men
come from, and what did they say to you?” “They came from a distant land,”
Hezekiah replied, “from Babylon.”
Behold, the days come, that all that is in thine house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store unto this day, shall be carried into Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith the LORD.
The time will surely come when everything in your palace and all that your fathers have stored up until this day will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left, says the LORD.
Nevertheless the priests of the high places came not up to the altar of the LORD in Jerusalem, but they did eat of the
unleavened bread among their brethren.
Although the priests of the high places did not
come up to the altar of the LORD in Jerusalem, they
ate unleavened bread with their fellow priests.
And he said, Let him alone; let no man move his bones. So they let his bones alone, with the bones of the prophet that came out of Samaria.
“Let him rest,” said
Josiah. “Do not let
anyone disturb his bones.” So they left his bones undisturbed, along with those of the prophet who had
come from Samaria.
And when he went in to his wife, she conceived, and bare a son, and he called his name Beriah, because it went evil with his house.
And again he
slept with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to a son. So he named him Beriah, because tragedy had
come upon his house.

Then said Saul to his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through
therewith; lest these
uncircumcised come and
abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was
sore afraid. So Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.
Then Saul said to his
armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and run it through me, or these
uncircumcised men will
come and
torture me!” But his
armor-bearer was
terrified and refused to do it. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it.
And the inhabitants of
Jebus said to David, Thou shalt not
come hither. Nevertheless David took the castle of
Zion, which is the city of David.
The people of
Jebus said to David, “You will never get in here.” Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of
Zion (that is, the City of David).
And David went out to meet them, and answered and said unto them, If ye be
come peaceably unto me to help me, mine heart shall be
knit unto you: but if ye be
come to
betray me to mine enemies, seeing there is no wrong in mine hands, the God of our fathers look
thereon, and
rebuke it.
And David went out to meet them, saying, “If you have
come to me in peace to help me, my heart will be united with you; but if you have
come to
betray me to my enemies when my hands are free of violence, may the God of our fathers see it and judge you.”
