early in the morning
Laban rose up, and
kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them: and
Laban departed, and returned unto his place.
Early the next morning,
Laban got up and
kissed his grandchildren and daughters and blessed them. Then he left to return home.
And they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in their hand, and all their
earrings which were in their
ears; and Jacob
hid them under the oak which was by
Shechem.
So they gave Jacob all their foreign gods and all their
earrings, and Jacob buried them under the oak near
Shechem.
And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father
rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the
earth?
He told his father and brothers, but his father
rebuked him and said, “What is this dream that you have had? Will your mother and brothers and I actually come and bow down to the ground before you?”
And he
slept and dreamed the second time: and, behold, seven
ears of corn came up upon one
stalk, rank and good.
but he fell back
asleep and dreamed a second time: Seven heads of grain,
plump and ripe, came up on one
stalk.
And, behold, seven thin ears and blasted with the east wind sprung up after them.
After them, seven other heads of grain
sprouted, thin and
scorched by the east wind.
And the seven thin
ears devoured the seven rank and full
ears. And Pharaoh
awoke, and, behold, it was a dream.
And the thin heads of grain
swallowed up the seven
plump, ripe ones. Then Pharaoh
awoke and realized it was a dream.
And I saw in my dream, and, behold, seven
ears came up in one
stalk, full and good:
In my dream I also saw seven heads of grain,
plump and ripe, growing on a single
stalk.
And, behold, seven
ears,
withered, thin, and blasted with the east wind, sprung up after them:
And the thin
ears devoured the seven good
ears: and I told this unto the magicians; but there was none that could declare it to me.
And the thin heads of grain
swallowed the seven
plump ones. I told this dream to the magicians, but no one could explain it to me.”
The seven good
kine are seven years; and the seven good
ears are seven years: the dream is one.
The seven good cows are seven years, and the seven ripe heads of grain are seven years. The dreams have the same meaning.
And the seven thin and ill favoured
kine that came up after them are seven years; and the seven empty
ears blasted with the east wind shall be seven years of famine.
Moreover, the seven thin,
ugly cows that came up after them are seven years, and so are the seven worthless heads of grain
scorched by the east wind—they are seven years of famine.
And in the seven
plenteous years the
earth brought forth by handfuls.
During the seven years of abundance, the land brought forth
bountifully.
And the famine was over all the face of the
earth: and Joseph opened all the storehouses, and sold unto the Egyptians; and the famine waxed
sore in the land of Egypt.
When the famine had spread over all the land, Joseph opened up all the storehouses and sold grain to the Egyptians; for the famine was severe in the land of Egypt.
And all countries came into Egypt to Joseph for to
buy corn; because that the famine was so
sore in all lands.
And every nation came to Joseph in Egypt to
buy grain, because the famine was severe over all the
earth.
And Joseph was the governor over the land, and he it was that sold to all the people of the land: and Joseph’s brethren came, and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth.
Now Joseph was the ruler of the land; he was the one who sold grain to all its people. So when his brothers arrived, they bowed down before him with their faces to the ground.
And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the earth.
When Joseph came home, they presented him with the gifts they had brought, and they bowed to the ground before him.
Then Judah came near unto him, and said, Oh my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord’s ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant: for thou art even as Pharaoh.
Then Judah approached Joseph and said, “Sir, please let your servant speak personally to my lord. Do not be
angry with your servant, for you are equal to Pharaoh himself.
For these two years hath the famine been in the land: and yet there are five years, in the which there shall neither be earing nor harvest.
For the famine has covered the land these two years, and there will be five more years without
plowing or harvesting.
And God sent me before you to preserve you a
posterity in the
earth, and to save your lives by a great
deliverance.
God sent me before you to preserve you as a
remnant on the
earth and to save your lives by a great
deliverance.
And Joseph brought them out from between his knees, and he bowed himself with his face to the earth.
Then Joseph removed his sons from his father’s knees and bowed facedown.
The Angel which redeemed me from all evil,
bless the lads; and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the
earth.
the angel who has redeemed me from all
harm— may He
bless these boys. And may they be called by my name and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac, and may they grow into a multitude upon the
earth.”
And when the days of his
mourning were past, Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have found grace in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the
ears of Pharaoh, saying,
When the days of
mourning had passed, Joseph said to Pharaoh’s court, “If I have found favor in your eyes, please tell Pharaoh that
And when they came to Reuel their father, he said, How is it that ye are come so soon to day?
When the daughters returned to their father Reuel, he asked them, “Why have you returned so
early today?”
And the LORD said unto Moses, Say unto Aaron, Stretch out thy rod, and
smite the dust of the land, that it may become
lice throughout all the land of Egypt.
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the earth, that it may turn into swarms of gnats throughout the land of Egypt.’”
And they did so; for Aaron stretched out his hand with his rod, and
smote the dust of the
earth, and it became
lice in man, and in beast; all the dust of the land became
lice throughout all the land of Egypt.
This they did, and when Aaron stretched out his hand with his staff and struck the dust of the earth, gnats came upon man and beast. All the dust of the earth turned into gnats throughout the land of Egypt.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Rise up early in the morning, and stand before Pharaoh; lo, he cometh forth to the water; and say unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Let my people go, that they may serve me.
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Get up early in the morning, and when Pharaoh goes out to the water, stand before him and tell him that this is what the LORD says: ‘Let My people go, so that they may worship Me.
And I will
sever in that day the land of
Goshen, in which my people dwell, that no swarms of
flies shall be there; to the end thou mayest know that I am the LORD in the midst of the
earth.
But on that day I will give special treatment to the land of
Goshen, where My people live; no swarms of
flies will be found there. In this way you will know that I, the LORD, am in the land.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Rise up early in the morning, and stand before Pharaoh, and say unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of the Hebrews, Let my people go, that they may serve me.
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Get up early in the morning, stand before Pharaoh, and tell him that this is what the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, says: ‘Let My people go, so that they may worship Me.
For I will at this time send all my plagues upon thine heart, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people; that thou mayest know that there is none like me in all the earth.
Otherwise, I will send all My plagues against you and your officials and your people, so you may know that there is no one like Me in all the earth.
For now I will stretch out my hand, that I may
smite thee and thy people with
pestilence; and thou shalt be cut off from the
earth.
For by this time I could have stretched out My hand and struck you and your people with a plague to
wipe you off the
earth.
And in very deed for this cause have I raised thee up, for to
shew in thee my power; and that my name may be declared throughout all the
earth.
But I have raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display My power to you, and that My name might be proclaimed in all the earth.
And Moses stretched forth his rod toward heaven: and the LORD sent
thunder and
hail, and the fire ran along upon the ground; and the LORD rained
hail upon the land of Egypt.
So Moses stretched out his staff toward heaven, and the LORD sent
thunder and
hail, and
lightning struck the
earth. So the LORD rained down
hail upon the land of Egypt.
And Moses said unto him, As soon as I am gone out of the city, I will spread abroad my hands unto the LORD; and the
thunder shall cease, neither shall there be any more
hail; that thou mayest know how that the
earth is the LORD’S.
Moses said to him, “When I have left the city, I will spread out my hands to the LORD. The
thunder will cease, and there will be no more
hail, so that you may know that the
earth is the LORD’s.
And the flax and the barley was
smitten: for the barley was in the
ear, and the flax was
bolled.
(Now the flax and barley were destroyed, since the barley was ripe and the flax was in
bloom;
And Moses went out of the city from Pharaoh, and spread abroad his hands unto the LORD: and the thunders and
hail ceased, and the rain was not poured upon the
earth.
Then Moses departed from Pharaoh, went out of the city, and spread out his hands to the LORD. The
thunder and
hail ceased, and the rain no longer poured down on the land.
And that thou mayest tell in the ears of thy son, and of thy son’s son, what things I have wrought in Egypt, and my signs which I have done among them; that ye may know how that I am the LORD.
and that you may tell your children and grandchildren how severely I dealt with the Egyptians when I performed
miraculous signs among them, so that all of you may know that I am the LORD.”
And they shall cover the face of the
earth, that one cannot be able to see the
earth: and they shall eat the residue of that which is escaped, which remaineth unto you from the
hail, and shall eat every tree which groweth for you out of the field:
They will cover the face of the land so that no one can see it. They will
devour whatever is left after the
hail and eat every tree that grows in your fields.
And they shall fill thy houses, and the houses of all thy servants, and the houses of all the Egyptians; which neither thy fathers, nor thy fathers’ fathers have seen, since the day that they were upon the earth unto this day. And he turned himself, and went out from Pharaoh.
They will fill your houses and the houses of all your officials and every Egyptian—something neither your fathers nor your grandfathers have seen since the day they came into this land.’” Then Moses turned and left Pharaoh’s presence.
For they covered the face of the whole
earth, so that the land was
darkened; and they did eat every
herb of the land, and all the fruit of the trees which the
hail had left: and there remained not any green thing in the trees, or in the herbs of the field, through all the land of Egypt.
They covered the face of all the land until it was black, and they consumed all the plants on the ground and all the fruit on the trees that the
hail had left behind. Nothing green was left on any tree or plant in all the land of Egypt.
Speak now in the
ears of the people, and let every man
borrow of his neighbour, and every woman of her neighbour, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold.
Now
announce to the people that men and women alike should ask their neighbors for articles of silver and gold.”
Thou stretchedst out thy right hand, the
earth swallowed them.
You stretched out Your right hand, and the
earth swallowed them up.
And said, If thou
wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and
wilt do that which is right in his sight, and
wilt give
ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.
saying, “If you will
listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God, and do what is right in His eyes, and pay attention to His commands, and keep all His statutes, then I will not bring on you any of the diseases I inflicted on the Egyptians. For I am the LORD who heals you.”
And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this for a
memorial in a book, and
rehearse it in the
ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the
remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Write this on a
scroll as a reminder and
recite it to Joshua, because I will utterly
blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.”
Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar
treasure unto me above all people: for all the
earth is mine:
Now if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, you will be My
treasured possession out of all the nations—for the whole
earth is Mine.
Thou shalt not make unto thee any
graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the
earth beneath, or that is in the water under the
earth:
You shall not make for
yourself an
idol in the form of anything in the heavens above, on the
earth below, or in the waters beneath.
For in six days the LORD made heaven and
earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and
hallowed it.
For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth and the sea and all that is in them, but on the seventh day He rested. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.
An altar of
earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice
thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will
bless thee.
You are to make for Me an altar of
earth, and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and peace offerings, your sheep and goats and cattle. In every place where I cause My name to be remembered, I will come to you and
bless you.
Then his master shall bring him unto the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an aul; and he shall serve him for ever.
then his master is to bring him before the judges. And he shall take him to the door or
doorpost and
pierce his
ear with an
awl. Then he shall serve his master for life.
And Moses wrote all the words of the LORD, and rose up early in the morning, and builded an altar under the hill, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Israel.
And Moses wrote down all the words of the LORD. Early the next morning he got up and built an altar at the base of the mountain, along with twelve pillars for the twelve tribes of Israel.
Then shalt thou kill the ram, and take of his blood, and put it upon the
tip of the right
ear of Aaron, and upon the
tip of the right
ear of his sons, and upon the
thumb of their right hand, and upon the great
toe of their right foot, and
sprinkle the blood upon the altar round about.
Slaughter the ram, take some of its blood, and put it on the right
earlobes of Aaron and his sons, on the thumbs of their right hands, and on the
big toes of their right feet.
Sprinkle the remaining blood on all sides of the altar.
It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.
It is a sign between Me and the Israelites
forever; for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the
earth, but on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed.’”
And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me.
So Aaron told them, “Take off the gold earrings that are on your wives and sons and daughters, and bring them to me.”
And all the people
brake off the golden
earrings which were in their
ears, and brought them unto Aaron.
Then all the people took off their gold earrings and brought them to Aaron.
And they rose up
early on the
morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.
So the next day they arose, offered burnt offerings, and presented peace offerings. And the people sat down to eat and drink, and got up to
indulge in
revelry.
Wherefore should the Egyptians speak, and say, For mischief did he bring them out, to
slay them in the mountains, and to
consume them from the face of the
earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and
repent of this evil against thy people.
Why should the Egyptians declare, ‘He brought them out with evil intent, to kill them in the mountains and
wipe them from the face of the
earth’? Turn from Your fierce anger and relent from doing
harm to Your people.
For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? is it not in that thou goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.
For how then can it be known that Your people and I have found favor in Your sight, unless You go with us? How else will we be distinguished from all the other people on the face of the earth?”
And he
hewed two tables of stone like unto the first; and Moses rose up
early in the morning, and went up unto mount
Sinai, as the LORD had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tables of stone.
So Moses
chiseled out two stone tablets like the originals. He rose
early in the morning, and taking the two stone tablets in his hands, he went up Mount
Sinai as the LORD had commanded him.
And Moses made
haste, and bowed his head toward the
earth, and worshipped.
Moses immediately bowed down to the ground and worshiped.
And he said, Behold, I make a covenant: before all thy people I will do marvels, such as have not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation: and all the people among which thou art shall see the work of the LORD: for it is a terrible thing that I will do with thee.
And the LORD said, “Behold, I am making a covenant. Before all your people I will perform wonders that have never been done in any nation in all the world. All the people among whom you live will see the LORD’s work, for it is an
awesome thing that I am doing with you.
Six days thou shalt work, but on the seventh day thou shalt rest: in earing time and in harvest thou shalt rest.
Six days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even in the seasons of
plowing and harvesting, you must rest.
And they came, both men and women, as many as were willing hearted, and brought bracelets, and earrings, and rings, and tablets, all jewels of gold: and every man that offered offered an offering of gold unto the LORD.
So all who had willing hearts, both men and women, came and brought brooches and
earrings, rings and necklaces, and all kinds of gold
jewelry. And they all presented their gold as a wave offering to the LORD.
And if thou offer a meat offering of thy firstfruits unto the LORD, thou shalt offer for the meat offering of thy firstfruits green ears of corn dried by the fire, even corn beaten out of full ears.
If you bring a grain offering of firstfruits to the LORD, you shall offer
crushed heads of new grain
roasted on the fire.
The clay pot in which the sin offering is boiled must be broken; if it is boiled in a bronze pot, the pot must be
scoured and
rinsed with water.
And he
slew it; and Moses took of the blood of it, and put it upon the
tip of Aaron’s right
ear, and upon the
thumb of his right hand, and upon the great
toe of his right foot.
Moses slaughtered the ram and took some of its blood and put it on Aaron’s right
earlobe, on the
thumb of his right hand, and on the
big toe of his right foot.
And he brought Aaron’s sons, and Moses put of the blood upon the
tip of their right
ear, and upon the thumbs of their right hands, and upon the great toes of their right feet: and Moses
sprinkled the blood upon the altar round about.
Moses also presented Aaron’s sons and put some of the blood on their right
earlobes, on the thumbs of their right hands, and on the
big toes of their right feet. Then he
sprinkled the blood on all sides of the altar.
Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, These are the beasts which ye shall eat among all the beasts that are on the earth.
“Say to the Israelites, ‘Of all the beasts of the earth, these ones you may eat:
Yet these may ye eat of every flying
creeping thing that goeth upon all four, which have legs above their feet, to
leap withal upon the
earth;
However, you may eat the following kinds of flying insects that walk on all fours: those having jointed legs above their feet for
hopping on the ground.
The following creatures that move along the ground are unclean for you: the
mole, the
mouse, any kind of great
lizard,
If any of them falls into a clay pot, everything in it will be unclean; you must break the pot.
And every
creeping thing that creepeth upon the
earth shall be an
abomination; it shall not be eaten.
Every creature that moves along the ground is
detestable; it must not be eaten.
Do not eat any creature that moves along the ground, whether it crawls on its
belly or walks on four or more feet; for such creatures are
detestable.
This is the law of the beasts, and of the fowl, and of every living creature that moveth in the waters, and of every creature that creepeth upon the earth:
This is the law regarding animals, birds, all living creatures that move in the water, and all creatures that
crawl along the ground.
And the priest shall command that one of the birds be killed in an
earthen vessel over running water:
Then the priest shall command that one of the birds be slaughtered over fresh water in a clay pot.
And the priest shall take some of the blood of the
trespass offering, and the priest shall put it upon the
tip of the right
ear of him that is to be
cleansed, and upon the
thumb of his right hand, and upon the great
toe of his right foot:
The priest is to take some of the blood from the guilt offering and put it on the right
earlobe of the one to be
cleansed, on the
thumb of his right hand, and on the
big toe of his right foot.
And of the rest of the oil that is in his hand shall the priest put upon the
tip of the right
ear of him that is to be
cleansed, and upon the
thumb of his right hand, and upon the great
toe of his right foot, upon the blood of the
trespass offering:
And the priest is to put some of the oil remaining in his palm on the right
earlobe of the one to be
cleansed, on the
thumb of his right hand, and on the
big toe of his right foot, on top of the blood of the guilt offering.
And he shall kill the lamb of the
trespass offering, and the priest shall take some of the blood of the
trespass offering, and put it upon the
tip of the right
ear of him that is to be
cleansed, and upon the
thumb of his right hand, and upon the great
toe of his right foot:
And after he slaughters the lamb for the guilt offering, the priest is to take some of the blood of the guilt offering and put it on the right
earlobe of the one to be
cleansed, on the
thumb of his right hand, and on the
big toe of his right foot.
And the priest shall put of the oil that is in his hand upon the
tip of the right
ear of him that is to be
cleansed, and upon the
thumb of his right hand, and upon the great
toe of his right foot, upon the place of the blood of the
trespass offering:
The priest shall also put some of the oil in his palm on the right
earlobe of the one to be
cleansed, on the
thumb of his right hand, and on the
big toe of his right foot—on the same places as the blood of the guilt offering.
And he shall kill the one of the birds in an
earthen vessel over running water:
and he shall slaughter one of the birds over fresh water in a clay pot.
And the vessel of
earth, that he toucheth which hath the issue, shall be broken: and every vessel of wood shall be
rinsed in water.
Any clay pot that the man with the discharge touches must be broken, and any wooden
utensil must be
rinsed with water.
And ye shall eat neither bread, nor
parched corn, nor green
ears, until the
selfsame day that ye have brought an offering unto your God: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.
You must not eat any bread or
roasted or new grain until the very day you have brought this offering to your God. This is to be a permanent statute for the generations to come, wherever you live.
And I will break the pride of your power; and I will make your heaven as iron, and your earth as brass:
I will break down your
stubborn pride and make your sky like iron and your land like bronze,
And the priest shall take holy water in an
earthen vessel; and of the dust that is in the floor of the tabernacle the priest shall take, and put it into the water:
Then he is to take some holy water in a clay
jar and put some of the dust from the tabernacle floor into the water.
And say thou unto the people,
Sanctify yourselves against to
morrow, and ye shall eat flesh: for ye have
wept in the
ears of the LORD, saying, Who shall give us flesh to eat? for it was well with us in Egypt: therefore the LORD will give you flesh, and ye shall eat.
And say to the people:
Consecrate yourselves for
tomorrow, and you will eat meat, because you have
cried out in the hearing of the LORD, saying: ‘Who will feed us meat? For we were better off in Egypt!’ Therefore the LORD will give you meat, and you will eat.
And there went forth a wind from the LORD, and brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, as it were a day’s journey on this side, and as it were a day’s journey on the other side, round about the camp, and as it were two cubits high upon the face of the earth.
Now a wind sent by the LORD came up, drove in
quail from the sea, and brought them near the camp, about two cubits above the surface of the ground, for a day’s journey in every direction around the camp.
(Now the man Moses was very
meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the
earth.)
Now Moses was a very humble man, more so than any man on the face of the earth.
But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD.
“Yet as surely as I live and as surely as the whole earth is filled with the glory of the LORD,
Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the LORD, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you:
So tell them: As surely as I live, declares the LORD, I will do to you exactly as I heard you say.
And they rose up
early in the morning, and
gat them up into the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here, and will go up unto the place which the LORD hath promised: for we have
sinned.
Early the next morning they got up and went up toward the ridge of the hill country. “We have indeed
sinned,” they said, “but we will go to the place the LORD has promised.”
But if the LORD make a new thing, and the
earth open her mouth, and
swallow them up, with all that
appertain unto them, and they go down quick into the pit; then ye shall understand that these men have
provoked the LORD.
But if the LORD brings about something
unprecedented, and the
earth opens its mouth and
swallows them and all that belongs to them so that they go down alive into
Sheol, then you will know that these men have treated the LORD with contempt.”
And the
earth opened her mouth, and
swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that
appertained unto
Korah, and all their goods.
and the
earth opened its mouth and
swallowed them and their households—all
Korah’s men and all their possessions.
They, and all that
appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the
earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation.
They went down alive into
Sheol with all they owned. The
earth closed over them, and they
vanished from the assembly.
And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them: for they said, Lest the
earth swallow us up also.
At their
cries, all the people of Israel who were around them fled, saying, “The
earth may
swallow us too!”
He sent messengers therefore unto
Balaam the son of Beor to
Pethor, which is by the river of the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt: behold, they cover the face of the
earth, and they
abide over against me:
he sent messengers to
Balaam son of Beor at
Pethor, which is by the Euphrates in the land of his people. “Behold, a people has come out of Egypt,” said Balak. “They cover the face of the land and have settled next to me.
Behold, there is a people come out of Egypt, which covereth the face of the
earth: come now,
curse me them;
peradventure I shall be able to overcome them, and drive them out.
‘Behold, a people has come out of Egypt, and they cover the face of the land. Now come and put a
curse on them for me. Perhaps I may be able to fight against them and drive them away.’”
And Balak said unto
Balaam, Did I not
earnestly send unto thee to call thee? wherefore camest thou not unto me? am I not able indeed to promote thee to honour?
And he said to
Balaam, “Did I not send you an
urgent summons? Why did you not come to me? Am I really not able to richly reward you?”
And he took up his parable, and said, Rise up, Balak, and hear;
hearken unto me, thou son of Zippor:
Then
Balaam lifted up an
oracle, saying: “Arise, O Balak, and
listen; give
ear to me, O son of Zippor.
And the
earth opened her mouth, and
swallowed them up together with
Korah, when that company died, what time the fire
devoured two hundred and fifty men: and they became a sign.
And the
earth opened its mouth and
swallowed them along with
Korah, whose followers died when the fire consumed 250 men. They serve as a
warning sign.
We have therefore brought an
oblation for the LORD, what every man hath
gotten, of jewels of gold, chains, and bracelets, rings,
earrings, and tablets, to make an
atonement for our souls before the LORD.
So we have brought to the LORD an offering of the gold articles each man acquired—armlets, bracelets, rings,
earrings, and necklaces—to make
atonement for ourselves before the LORD.”
And ye returned and
wept before the LORD; but the LORD would not
hearken to your voice, nor give
