But they
hearkened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their
evil heart, and went backward, and not forward.
Yet they did not
listen or
incline their ear, but they followed the
stubborn inclinations of their own
evil hearts. They went backward and not forward.
Yet they
hearkened not unto me, nor inclined their ear, but
hardened their neck: they did worse than their fathers.
Yet they would not
listen to Me or
incline their ear, but they
stiffened their necks and did more
evil than their fathers.
For the children of Judah have done
evil in my sight, saith the LORD: they have set their abominations in the house which is called by my name, to
pollute it.
For the people of Judah have done
evil in My sight, declares the LORD. They have set up their abominations in the house that bears My Name, and so have
defiled it.
And death shall be chosen rather than life by all the residue of them that remain of this
evil family, which remain in all the places
whither I have driven them, saith the LORD of hosts.
And wherever I have banished them, the
remnant of this
evil family will choose death over life,” declares the LORD of Hosts.
And they bend their tongues like their bow for lies: but they are not
valiant for the truth upon the earth; for they proceed from
evil to
evil, and they know not me, saith the LORD.
“They bend their tongues like bows; lies prevail over truth in the land. For they proceed from evil to evil, and they do not take Me into account,” declares the LORD.
They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.
Like scarecrows in a
cucumber patch, their idols cannot speak. They must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them, for they can do no
harm, and neither can they do any good.”
Yet they obeyed not, nor inclined their ear, but walked every one in the imagination of their evil heart: therefore I will bring upon them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do; but they did them not.
Yet they would not obey or
incline their ears, but each one followed the
stubbornness of his
evil heart. So I brought on them all the curses of this covenant I had commanded them to follow but they did not keep.”
Therefore thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring
evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and though they shall cry unto me, I will not
hearken unto them.
Therefore this is what the LORD says: ‘I am about to bring upon them a
disaster that they cannot escape. They will cry out to Me, but I will not
listen to them.
What hath my beloved to do in mine house, seeing she hath wrought
lewdness with many, and the holy flesh is passed from thee? when thou doest
evil, then thou rejoicest.
What right has My beloved in My house, having carried out so many
evil schemes? Can consecrated meat
avert your
doom, so that you can
rejoice?
For the LORD of hosts, that planted thee, hath pronounced
evil against thee, for the
evil of the house of Israel and of the house of Judah, which they have done against themselves to
provoke me to anger in offering incense unto
Baal.
The LORD of Hosts, who planted you, has decreed
disaster against you on account of the
evil that the house of Israel and the house of Judah have brought upon themselves,
provoking Me to anger by burning incense to
Baal.”
And there shall be no
remnant of them: for I will bring
evil upon the men of Anathoth, even the year of their
visitation.
There will be no
remnant, for I will bring
disaster on the people of Anathoth in the year of their punishment.”
How long shall the land
mourn, and the herbs of every field wither, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein? the beasts are consumed, and the birds; because they said, He shall not see our last end.
How long will the land
mourn and the grass of every field be
withered? Because of the
evil of its residents, the animals and birds have been swept away, for the people have said, “He cannot see what our end will be.”
Thus saith the LORD against all mine
evil neighbours, that touch the inheritance which I have caused my people Israel to
inherit; Behold, I will
pluck them out of their land, and
pluck out the house of Judah from among them.
This is what the LORD says: “As for all My
evil neighbors who attack the inheritance that I
bequeathed to My people Israel, I am about to
uproot them from their land, and I will
uproot the house of Judah from among them.
This
evil people, which refuse to hear my words, which walk in the imagination of their heart, and walk after other gods, to serve them, and to worship them, shall even be as this
girdle, which is good for nothing.
These
evil people, who refuse to
listen to My words, who follow the
stubbornness of their own hearts, and who go after other gods to serve and worship them, they will be like this loincloth—of no use at all.
Can the
Ethiopian change his skin, or the
leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do
evil.
Can the
Ethiopian change his skin, or the
leopard his spots? Neither are you able to do good— you who are accustomed to doing
evil.
And the people to whom they
prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword; and they shall have none to
bury them, them, their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters: for I will pour their wickedness upon them.
And the people to whom they
prophesy will be thrown into the streets of Jerusalem because of famine and sword. There will be no one to
bury them or their wives, their sons or their daughters. I will pour out their own
evil upon them.
The LORD said: “Surely I will deliver you for a good purpose; surely I will
intercede with your enemy in your time of trouble, in your time of distress.
And it shall come to pass, when thou shalt
shew this people all these words, and they shall say unto thee, Wherefore hath the LORD pronounced all this great
evil against us? or what is our iniquity? or what is our sin that we have committed against the LORD our God?
When you tell these people all these things, they will ask you, ‘Why has the LORD pronounced all this great
disaster against us? What is our guilt? What is the sin that we have committed against the LORD our God?’
And ye have done worse than your fathers; for, behold, ye walk every one after the imagination of his
evil heart, that they may not
hearken unto me:
And you have done more
evil than your fathers. See how each of you follows the
stubbornness of his
evil heart instead of obeying Me.
Be not a terror unto me: thou art my hope in the day of evil.
Do not become a terror to me; You are my refuge in the day of
disaster.
Let them be confounded that
persecute me, but let not me be confounded: let them be dismayed, but let not me be dismayed: bring upon them the day of
evil, and destroy them with double destruction.
Let my persecutors be put to shame, but do not let me be put to shame. Let them be
terrified, but do not let me be
terrified. Bring upon them the day of
disaster and
shatter them with double destruction.
If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their
evil, I will
repent of the
evil that I thought to do unto them.
But if that nation I
warned turns from its
evil, then I will relent of the
disaster I had
planned to bring.
If it do
evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will
repent of the good,
wherewith I said I would benefit them.
and if it does
evil in My sight and does not
listen to My voice, then I will relent of the good I had intended for it.
Now therefore go to, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I frame
evil against you, and
devise a
device against you: return ye now every one from his
evil way, and make your ways and your doings good.
Now therefore, tell the men of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem that this is what the LORD says: ‘Behold, I am
planning a
disaster for you and
devising a plan against you. Turn now, each of you, from your
evil ways, and correct your ways and deeds.’
And they said, There is no hope: but we will walk after our own devices, and we will every one do the imagination of his evil heart.
But they will reply, ‘It is hopeless. We will follow our own plans, and each of us will act according to the
stubbornness of his
evil heart.’”
Shall
evil be
recompensed for good? for they have
digged a pit for my soul. Remember that I stood before thee to speak good for them, and to turn away thy wrath from them.
Should good be repaid with
evil? Yet they have
dug a pit for me. Remember how I stood before You to speak good on their behalf, to turn Your wrath from them.
And say, Hear ye the word of the LORD, O kings of Judah, and inhabitants of Jerusalem; Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring
evil upon this place, the which
whosoever heareth, his ears shall
tingle.
saying, ‘Hear the word of the LORD, O kings of Judah and residents of Jerusalem. This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: I am going to bring such
disaster on this place that the ears of all who hear of it will ring,
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring upon this city and upon all her towns all the
evil that I have pronounced against it, because they have
hardened their necks, that they might not hear my words.
“This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘Behold, I am about to bring on this city and on all the villages around it every
disaster I have pronounced against them, because they have
stiffened their necks so as not to
heed My words.’”
Sing unto the LORD, praise ye the LORD: for he hath delivered the soul of the poor from the hand of evildoers.
Sing to the LORD! Praise the LORD! For He rescues the life of the
needy from the hands of
evildoers.
For I have set my face against this city for evil, and not for good, saith the LORD: it shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.
For I have set My face against this city to bring
disaster and not good, declares the LORD. It will be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, who will destroy it with fire.’
O house of David, thus saith the LORD;
Execute judgment in the morning, and deliver him that is
spoiled out of the hand of the
oppressor, lest my
fury go out like fire, and burn that none can
quench it, because of the
evil of your doings.
O house of David, this is what the LORD says: ‘
Administer justice every morning, and
rescue the
victim of
robbery from the hand of his
oppressor, or My wrath will go forth like fire and burn with no one to
extinguish it because of their
evil deeds.
Therefore thus saith the LORD God of Israel against the pastors that feed my people; Ye have scattered my flock, and driven them away, and have not visited them: behold, I will visit upon you the evil of your doings, saith the LORD.
Therefore this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says about the
shepherds who tend My people: “You have scattered My flock and driven them away, and have not attended to them. Behold, I will attend to you for the
evil of your deeds, declares the LORD.
For the land is full of adulterers; for because of
swearing the land mourneth; the pleasant places of the wilderness are dried up, and their course is
evil, and their force is not right.
For the land is full of adulterers— because of the
curse, the land mourns and the pastures of the wilderness have dried up— their course is
evil and their power is misused.
Wherefore their way shall be unto them as
slippery ways in the darkness: they shall be driven on, and fall therein: for I will bring
evil upon them, even the year of their
visitation, saith the LORD.
“Therefore their path will become
slick; they will be driven away into the darkness and fall into it. For I will bring
disaster upon them in the year of their punishment,” declares the LORD.
I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an
horrible thing: they commit
adultery, and walk in lies: they
strengthen also the hands of
evildoers, that none
doth return from his wickedness: they are all of them unto me as
Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as
Gomorrah.
And among the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen a
horrible thing: They commit
adultery and walk in lies. They
strengthen the hands of
evildoers, so that no one turns his back on wickedness. They are all like
Sodom to Me; the people of Jerusalem are like
Gomorrah.”
They say still unto them that
despise me, The LORD hath said, Ye shall have peace; and they say unto every one that walketh after the imagination of his own heart, No
evil shall come upon you.
They keep saying to those who
despise Me, ‘The LORD says that you will have peace,’ and to
everyone who walks in the
stubbornness of his own heart, ‘No
harm will come to you.’
But if they had stood in my counsel, and had caused my people to hear my words, then they should have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their doings.
But if they had stood in My council, they would have proclaimed My words to My people and turned them back from their evil ways and deeds.”
Then said the LORD unto me, What seest thou, Jeremiah? And I said, Figs; the good figs, very good; and the evil, very evil, that cannot be eaten, they are so evil.
“Jeremiah,” the LORD asked, “what do you see?” “Figs!” I replied. “The good figs are very good, but the bad figs are very bad, so bad they cannot be eaten.”
And as the
evil figs, which cannot be eaten, they are so
evil; surely thus saith the LORD, So will I give
Zedekiah the king of Judah, and his princes, and the residue of Jerusalem, that remain in this land, and them that dwell in the land of Egypt:
But like the bad figs, so bad they cannot be eaten,’ says the LORD, ‘so will I deal with
Zedekiah king of Judah, his officials, and the
remnant of Jerusalem—those remaining in this land and those living in the land of Egypt.
They said, Turn ye again now every one from his evil way, and from the evil of your doings, and dwell in the land that the LORD hath given unto you and to your fathers for ever and ever:
The prophets told you, ‘Turn now, each of you, from your
evil ways and deeds, and you can dwell in the land that the LORD has given to you and your fathers
forever and ever.
For, lo, I begin to bring evil on the city which is called by my name, and should ye be utterly unpunished? Ye shall not be unpunished: for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, saith the LORD of hosts.
For behold, I am beginning to bring
disaster on the city that bears My Name, so how could you possibly go unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for I am calling down a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, declares the LORD of Hosts.’
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold,
evil shall go forth from nation to nation, and a great
whirlwind shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth.
This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Behold!
Disaster is spreading from nation to nation; a mighty storm is rising from the ends of the earth.”
If so be they will
hearken, and turn every man from his
evil way, that I may
repent me of the
evil, which I purpose to do unto them because of the
evil of their doings.
Perhaps they will
listen and turn—each from his
evil way of life—so that I may relent of the
disaster I am
planning to bring upon them because of the
evil of their deeds.
Therefore now
amend your ways and your doings, and obey the voice of the LORD your God; and the LORD will
repent him of the
evil that he hath pronounced against you.
So now, correct your ways and deeds, and obey the voice of the LORD your God, so that He might relent of the
disaster He has pronounced against you.
Did
Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him at all to death? did he not fear the LORD, and
besought the LORD, and the LORD
repented him of the
evil which he had pronounced against them? Thus might we
procure great
evil against our souls.
Did
Hezekiah king of Judah or
anyone else in Judah put him to death? Did
Hezekiah not fear the LORD and seek His favor, and did not the LORD relent of the
disaster He had pronounced against them? But we are about to bring great
harm on ourselves!”
The prophets that have been before me and before thee of old
prophesied both against many countries, and against great kingdoms, of war, and of
evil, and of
pestilence.
The prophets of old who preceded you and me
prophesied war,
disaster, and plague against many lands and great kingdoms.
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to
prosper you and not to
harm you, to give you a future and a hope.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will send upon them the sword, the famine, and the
pestilence, and will make them like
vile figs, that cannot be eaten, they are so
evil.
this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “I will send against them sword and famine and plague, and I will make them like
rotten figs, so bad they cannot be eaten.
And they came in, and possessed it; but they obeyed not thy voice, neither walked in thy law; they have done nothing of all that thou commandedst them to do: therefore thou hast caused all this evil to come upon them:
They came in and possessed it, but they did not obey Your voice or walk in Your law. They failed to perform all that You commanded them to do, and so You have brought upon them all this
disaster.
For the children of Israel and the children of Judah have only done
evil before me from their youth: for the children of Israel have only
provoked me to anger with the work of their hands, saith the LORD.
For the children of Israel and of Judah have done nothing but
evil in My sight from their youth; indeed, they have done nothing but
provoke Me to anger by the work of their hands, declares the LORD.
Because of all the
evil of the children of Israel and of the children of Judah, which they have done to
provoke me to anger, they, their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets, and the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
because of all the
evil the children of Israel and of Judah have done to
provoke Me to anger—they, their kings, their officials, their priests and prophets, the men of Judah, and the residents of Jerusalem.
For thus saith the LORD; Like as I have brought all this great evil upon this people, so will I bring upon them all the good that I have promised them.
For this is what the LORD says: Just as I have brought all this great
disaster on this people, so I will bring on them all the good I have promised them.
I have sent also unto you all my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, Return ye now every man from his
evil way, and
amend your doings, and go not after other gods to serve them, and ye shall dwell in the land which I have given to you and to your fathers: but ye have not inclined your ear, nor
hearkened unto me.
Again and again I have sent you all My servants the prophets,
proclaiming: ‘Turn now, each of you, from your wicked ways, and correct your actions. Do not go after other gods to serve them. Live in the land that I have given to you and your fathers.’ But you have not inclined your ear or
listened to Me.
Therefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the evil that I have pronounced against them: because I have spoken unto them, but they have not heard; and I have called unto them, but they have not answered.
Therefore this is what the LORD God of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘Behold, I will bring to Judah and to all the residents of Jerusalem all the
disaster I have pronounced against them, because I have spoken to them but they have not obeyed, and I have called to them but they have not answered.’”
It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the
evil which I purpose to do unto them; that they may return every man from his
evil way; that I may
forgive their iniquity and their sin.
Perhaps when the people of Judah hear about all the
calamity I plan to bring upon them, each of them will turn from his wicked way. Then I will
forgive their iniquity and their sin.”
It may be they will present their
supplication before the LORD, and will return every one from his
evil way: for great is the anger and the
fury that the LORD hath pronounced against this people.
Perhaps they will bring their petition before the LORD, and each one will turn from his wicked way; for great are the anger and
fury that the LORD has pronounced against this people.”
And I will
punish him and his seed and his servants for their iniquity; and I will bring upon them, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and upon the men of Judah, all the
evil that I have pronounced against them; but they
hearkened not.
I will
punish him and his descendants and servants for their iniquity. I will bring on them, on the residents of Jerusalem, and on the men of Judah, all the
calamity about which I
warned them but they did not
listen.”
My lord the king, these men have done
evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the
dungeon; and he is like to die for hunger in the place where he is: for there is no more bread in the city.
“My lord the king, these men have acted wickedly in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet. They have dropped him into the
cistern, where he will
starve to death, for there is no more bread in the city.”
Go and speak to Ebed-melech the
Ethiopian, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring my words upon this city for
evil, and not for good; and they shall be accomplished in that day before thee.
“Go and tell Ebed-melech the
Cushite that this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘I am about to
fulfill My words against this city for
harm and not for good, and on that day they will be fulfilled before your eyes.
And the captain of the guard took Jeremiah, and said unto him, The LORD thy God hath pronounced this evil upon this place.
The captain of the guard found Jeremiah and said to him, “The LORD your God decreed this
disaster on this place,
But when Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were with him, heard of all the
evil that
Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had done,
When Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies with him heard of all the crimes that
Ishmael son of Nethaniah had committed,
Whether it be good, or whether it be evil, we will obey the voice of the LORD our God, to whom we send thee; that it may be well with us, when we obey the voice of the LORD our God.
Whether it is pleasant or unpleasant, we will obey the voice of the LORD our God to whom we are sending you, so that it may go well with us, for we will obey the voice of the LORD our God!”
If ye will still
abide in this land, then will I build you, and not pull you down, and I will plant you, and not
pluck you up: for I
repent me of the
evil that I have done unto you.
‘If you will indeed stay in this land, then I will build you up and not
tear you down; I will plant you and not
uproot you, for I will relent of the
disaster I have brought upon you.
So shall it be with all the men that set their faces to go into Egypt to
sojourn there; they shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the
pestilence: and none of them shall remain or escape from the
evil that I will bring upon them.
So all who
resolve to go to Egypt to reside there will die by sword and famine and plague. Not one of them will
survive or escape the
disaster I will bring upon them.’
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Ye have seen all the
evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, and upon all the cities of Judah; and, behold, this day they are a
desolation, and no man dwelleth therein,
“This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: You have seen all the
disaster that I brought against Jerusalem and all the cities of Judah; and behold, they lie
today in ruins and
desolation Because of their wickedness which they have committed to
provoke me to anger, in that they went to burn incense, and to serve other gods, whom they knew not, neither they, ye, nor your fathers.
because of the
evil they have done. They
provoked Me to anger by continuing to burn incense and to serve other gods that neither they nor you nor your fathers ever knew.
Therefore now thus saith the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel; Wherefore commit ye this great
evil against your souls, to cut off from you man and woman, child and
suckling, out of Judah, to leave you none to remain;
So now, this is what the LORD God of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Why are you doing such great
harm to
yourselves by cutting off from Judah man and woman, child and infant, leaving
yourselves without a
remnant?
Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will set my face against you for evil, and to cut off all Judah.
Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: I will set My face to bring
disaster and to cut off all Judah.
But we will certainly do
whatsoever thing goeth forth out of our own mouth, to burn incense unto the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: for then had we
plenty of
victuals, and were well, and saw no
evil.
Instead, we will do everything we
vowed to do: We will burn incense to the Queen of Heaven and offer drink offerings to her, just as we, our fathers, our kings, and our officials did in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. At that time we had
plenty of food and good things, and we saw no
disaster.
So that the LORD could no longer bear, because of the
evil of your doings, and because of the abominations which ye have committed; therefore is your land a
desolation, and an
astonishment, and a
curse, without an inhabitant, as at this day.
Because ye have burned incense, and because ye have
sinned against the LORD, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD, nor walked in his law, nor in his statutes, nor in his
testimonies; therefore this
evil is happened unto you, as at this day.
Because you burned incense and
sinned against the LORD, and did not obey the voice of the LORD or walk in His instruction, His statutes, and His
testimonies, this
disaster has
befallen you, as you see
today.”
Behold, I will watch over them for evil, and not for good: and all the men of Judah that are in the land of Egypt shall be consumed by the sword and by the famine, until there be an end of them.
I am watching over them for
harm and not for good, and every man of Judah who is in the land of Egypt will meet his end by sword or famine, until they are finished off.
And this shall be a sign unto you, saith the LORD, that I will
punish you in this place, that ye may know that my words shall surely stand against you for
evil:
This will be a sign to you that I will
punish you in this place, declares the LORD, so that you may know that My threats of
harm against you will surely stand.
And seekest thou great things for
thyself? seek them not: for, behold, I will bring
evil upon all flesh, saith the LORD: but thy life will I give unto thee for a prey in all places
whither thou goest.
But as for you, do you seek great things for
yourself? Stop seeking! For I will bring
disaster on every living creature, declares the LORD, but wherever you go, I will grant your life as a
spoil of war.”
There shall be no more praise of Moab: in
Heshbon they have devised
evil against it; come, and let us cut it off from being a nation. Also thou shalt be cut down, O
Madmen; the sword shall pursue thee.
There is no longer praise for Moab; in
Heshbon they
devise evil against her: ‘Come, let us cut her off from nationhood.’ You too, O people of
Madmen, will be silenced; the sword will pursue you.
Concerning Damascus.
Hamath is confounded, and Arpad: for they have heard
evil tidings: they are
fainthearted; there is sorrow on the sea; it cannot be quiet.
Concerning Damascus: “
Hamath and Arpad are put to shame, for they have heard a bad report; they are
agitated like the sea; their
anxiety cannot be calmed.
For I will cause
Elam to be dismayed before their enemies, and before them that seek their life: and I will bring
evil upon them even my fierce anger, saith the LORD; and I will send the sword after them, till I have consumed them:
So I will
shatter Elam before their foes, before those who seek their lives. I will bring
disaster upon them, even My fierce anger,” declares the LORD. “I will send out the sword after them until I finish them off.
And I will render unto Babylon and to all the inhabitants of
Chaldea all their
evil that they have done in
Zion in your sight, saith the LORD.
Before your very eyes I will repay Babylon and all the dwellers of
Chaldea for all the
evil they have done in
Zion,” declares the LORD.
So Jeremiah wrote in a book all the evil that should come upon Babylon, even all these words that are written against Babylon.
Jeremiah had written on a single
scroll about all the
disaster that would come upon Babylon—all these words that had been written concerning Babylon.
And thou shalt say, Thus shall Babylon sink, and shall not rise from the
evil that I will bring upon her: and they shall be
weary. Thus far are the words of Jeremiah.
Then you are to say, ‘In the same way Babylon will sink and never rise again, because of the
disaster I will bring upon her. And her people will grow
weary.’” Here end the words of Jeremiah.
And he did that which was
evil in the eyes of the LORD, according to all that
Jehoiakim had done.
And it came to pass in the seven and
thirtieth year of the captivity of
Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the
twelfth month, in the five and
twentieth day of the month, that
Evil-merodach king of Babylon in the first year of his reign lifted up the head of
Jehoiachin king of Judah, and brought him forth out of prison,
On the twenty-fifth day of the
twelfth month of the thirty-seventh year of the exile of
Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the first year of the reign of
Evil-merodach king of Babylon, he
pardoned Jehoiachin king of Judah and released him from prison.
Out of the mouth of the most High proceedeth not evil and good?
Do not both
adversity and good come from the mouth of the Most High?
When I shall send upon them the evil arrows of famine, which shall be for their destruction, and which I will send to destroy you: and I will increase the famine upon you, and will break your staff of bread:
When I shower you with the deadly arrows of famine and destruction that I will send to destroy you, I will
intensify the famine against you and cut off your supply of food.
So will I send upon you famine and
evil beasts, and they shall
bereave thee; and
pestilence and blood shall pass through thee; and I will bring the sword upon thee. I the LORD have spoken it.
I will send famine and wild beasts against you, and they will leave you childless. Plague and
bloodshed will
sweep through you, and I will bring a sword against you. I, the LORD, have spoken.”
And they that escape of you shall remember me among the nations
whither they shall be carried
captives, because I am broken with their
whorish heart, which hath departed from me, and with their eyes, which go a
whoring after their idols: and they shall
lothe themselves for the
evils which they have committed in all their abominations.
Then in the nations to which they have been carried
captive, your survivors will remember Me—how I have been
grieved by their
adulterous hearts that turned away from Me, and by their eyes that
lusted after idols. So they will
loathe themselves for the
evil they have done and for all their abominations.
And they shall know that I am the LORD, and that I have not said in vain that I would do this evil unto them.
And they will know that I am the LORD; I did not declare in vain that I would bring this
calamity upon them.
Thus saith the Lord GOD;
Smite with thine hand, and stamp with thy foot, and say,
Alas for all the
evil abominations of the house of Israel! for they shall fall by the sword, by the famine, and by the
pestilence.
This is what the Lord GOD says:
Clap your hands,
stomp your feet, and cry out “
Alas!” because of all the wicked abominations of the house of Israel, who will fall by sword and famine and plague.
Thus saith the Lord GOD; An evil, an only evil, behold, is come.
Then said he unto me, Son of man, these are the men that
devise mischief, and give wicked counsel in this city:
And the LORD said to me, “Son of man, these are the men who plot evil and give wicked counsel in this city.
Because with lies ye have made the heart of the righteous
sad, whom I have not made
sad; and strengthened the hands of the wicked, that he should not return from his wicked way, by promising him life:
Because you have
disheartened the righteous with your lies, even though I have caused them no grief, and because you have encouraged the wicked not to turn from their
evil ways to save their lives,
Yet, behold, therein shall be left a
remnant that shall be brought forth, both sons and daughters: behold, they shall come forth unto you, and ye shall see their way and their doings: and ye shall be comforted concerning the
evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, even concerning all that I have brought upon it.
Yet, behold, some survivors will be left in it—sons and daughters who will be brought out. They will come out to you, and when you see their conduct and actions, you will be comforted regarding the
disaster I have brought upon Jerusalem—all that I have brought upon it.
And there shall ye remember your ways, and all your doings, wherein ye have been
defiled; and ye shall
lothe yourselves in your own sight for all your
evils that ye have committed.
Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?
Say to them: ‘As surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked should turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways! For why should you die, O house of Israel?’
And I will make with them a covenant of peace, and will cause the evil beasts to cease out of the land: and they shall dwell safely in the wilderness, and sleep in the woods.
I will make with them a covenant of peace and rid the land of wild animals, so that they may dwell securely in the wilderness and sleep in the forest.
Then shall ye remember your own
evil ways, and your doings that were not good, and shall
lothe yourselves in your own sight for your
iniquities and for your abominations.
Thus saith the Lord GOD; It shall also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought:
This is what the Lord GOD says: On that day, thoughts will arise in your mind, and you will
devise an
evil plan.
And he hath confirmed his words, which he spake against us, and against our judges that judged us, by bringing upon us a great evil: for under the whole heaven hath not been done as hath been done upon Jerusalem.
You have carried out the words spoken against us and against our rulers by bringing upon us a great
disaster. For under all of heaven, nothing has ever been done like what has been done to Jerusalem.
As it is written in the law of Moses, all this
evil is come upon us: yet made we not our prayer before the LORD our God, that we might turn from our
iniquities, and understand thy truth.
Just as it is written in the Law of Moses, all this
disaster has come upon us, yet we have not sought the favor of the LORD our God by turning from our
iniquities and giving attention to Your truth.
Therefore hath the LORD watched upon the evil, and brought it upon us: for the LORD our God is righteous in all his works which he doeth: for we obeyed not his voice.
Therefore the LORD has kept the
calamity in store and brought it upon us. For the LORD our God is righteous in all He does; yet we have not obeyed His voice.
