And the children of Israel gave by lot unto the Levites these cities with their suburbs, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses.
So the Israelites
allotted to the Levites these cities, together with their pasturelands, as the LORD had commanded through Moses.
And the LORD gave them rest round about, according to all that he
sware unto their fathers: and there stood not a man of all their enemies before them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their
hand.
And the LORD gave them rest on every side, just as He had
sworn to their fathers. None of their enemies could stand against them, for the LORD delivered all their enemies into their
hand.
And the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad and the half tribe of
Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel out of
Shiloh, which is in the land of
Canaan, to go unto the country of
Gilead, to the land of their possession,
whereof they were possessed, according to the word of the LORD by the
hand of Moses.
So the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh left the Israelites at
Shiloh in the land of
Canaan to return to their own land of
Gilead, which they had acquired according to the command of the LORD through Moses.
And
Phinehas the son of
Eleazar the priest said unto the children of
Reuben, and to the children of
Gad, and to the children of
Manasseh, This day we perceive that the LORD is among us, because ye have not committed this
trespass against the LORD: now ye have delivered the children of Israel out of the
hand of the LORD.
Phinehas son of
Eleazar the priest said to the descendants of
Reuben,
Gad, and
Manasseh, “
Today we know that the LORD is among us, because you have not committed this breach of faith against Him. Consequently, you have delivered the Israelites from the
hand of the LORD.”
Be ye therefore very
courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, that ye turn not aside
therefrom to the right
hand or to the left;
Be very strong, then, so that you can keep and obey all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, not turning aside from it to the right or to the left.
And I brought you into the land of the
Amorites, which dwelt on the other side Jordan; and they fought with you: and I gave them into your
hand, that ye might possess their land; and I destroyed them from before you.
Later, I brought you to the land of the
Amorites who lived beyond the Jordan. They fought against you, but I delivered them into your
hand, that you should possess their land when I destroyed them before you.
But I would not
hearken unto
Balaam; therefore he blessed you still: so I delivered you out of his
hand.
but I would not
listen to
Balaam. So he blessed you again and again, and I delivered you from his
hand.
And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.
“Judah shall go up,” answered the LORD. “Indeed, I have delivered the land into their hands.”
And Judah went up; and the LORD delivered the
Canaanites and the
Perizzites into their
hand: and they
slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men.
When Judah attacked, the LORD delivered the
Canaanites and
Perizzites into their
hands, and they struck down ten thousand men at Bezek.
But the
Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in
Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the
hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributaries.
And the
Amorites were determined to dwell in Mount Heres,
Aijalon, and Shaalbim. But when the house of Joseph grew in strength, they pressed the
Amorites into forced labor.
And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into the
hands of spoilers that
spoiled them, and he sold them into the
hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.
Then the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He delivered them into the
hands of those who
plundered them. He sold them into the
hands of their enemies all around, whom they were no longer able to resist.
Whithersoever they went out, the
hand of the LORD was against them for evil, as the LORD had said, and as the LORD had
sworn unto them: and they were greatly distressed.
Wherever Israel marched out, the
hand of the LORD was against them to bring
calamity, just as He had
sworn to them. So they were greatly distressed.
Nevertheless the LORD raised up judges, which delivered them out of the
hand of those that
spoiled them.
Then the LORD raised up judges, who saved them from the
hands of those who
plundered them.
And when the LORD raised them up judges, then the LORD was with the judge, and delivered them out of the
hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it
repented the LORD because of their groanings by reason of them that
oppressed them and
vexed them.
Whenever the LORD raised up a judge for the Israelites, He was with that judge and saved them from the
hands of their enemies while the judge was still alive; for the LORD was moved to
pity by their
groaning under those who
oppressed them and
afflicted them.
Therefore the LORD left those nations, without driving them out
hastily; neither delivered he them into the
hand of Joshua.
That is why the LORD had left those nations in place and had not driven them out immediately by delivering them into the hand of Joshua.
And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would
hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the
hand of Moses.
These nations were left to test the Israelites, to find out whether they would keep the commandments of the LORD, which He had given their fathers through Moses.
Therefore the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the
hand of Chushan-rishathaim king of
Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushan-rishathaim eight years.
Then the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He sold them into the
hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of
Aram-naharaim, and the Israelites served him eight years.
And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chushan-rishathaim king of
Mesopotamia into his
hand; and his
hand prevailed against Chushan-rishathaim.
The Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he became Israel’s judge and went out to war. And the LORD delivered Cushan-rishathaim king of
Aram into the
hand of Othniel, who prevailed against him.
But when the children of Israel
cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of
Gera, a
Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto
Eglon the king of Moab.
And again they
cried out to the LORD, and He raised up Ehud son of
Gera, a left-
handed Benjamite, as their deliverer. So they sent him with tribute to
Eglon king of Moab.
And Ehud put forth his left
hand, and took the
dagger from his right
thigh, and thrust it into his
belly:
And Ehud reached with his left
hand, pulled the sword from his right
thigh, and
plunged it into
Eglon’s
belly.
And the
haft also went in after the
blade; and the fat closed upon the
blade, so that he could not draw the
dagger out of his
belly; and the
dirt came out.
And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.
“Follow me,” he told them, “for the LORD has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your
hand.” So they followed him down and seized the fords of the Jordan leading to Moab, and did not allow
anyone to cross over.
So Moab was subdued that day under the
hand of Israel. And the land had rest
fourscore years.
So Moab was subdued under the hand of Israel that day, and the land had rest for eighty years.
And the LORD sold them into the
hand of Jabin king of
Canaan, that reigned in Hazor; the captain of whose host was Sisera, which dwelt in
Harosheth of the Gentiles.
So the LORD sold them into the
hand of Jabin king of
Canaan, who reigned in Hazor. The commander of his forces was Sisera, who lived in
Harosheth-hagoyim.
And I will draw unto thee to the river
Kishon Sisera, the captain of Jabin’s army, with his
chariots and his multitude; and I will deliver him into thine
hand.
And I will draw out Sisera the commander of Jabin’s army, his
chariots, and his troops to the River
Kishon, and I will deliver him into your
hand.’”
And she said, I will surely go with thee: notwithstanding the journey that thou takest shall not be for thine honour; for the LORD shall sell Sisera into the
hand of a woman. And
Deborah arose, and went with
Barak to Kedesh.
“I will certainly go with you,”
Deborah replied, “but the road you are taking will bring you no honor, because the LORD will be selling Sisera into the
hand of a woman.” So
Deborah got up and went with
Barak to Kedesh,
And
Deborah said unto
Barak, Up; for this is the day in which the LORD hath delivered Sisera into thine
hand: is not the LORD gone out before thee? So
Barak went down from mount
Tabor, and ten thousand men after him.
Then
Deborah said to
Barak, “Arise, for this is the day that the LORD has delivered Sisera into your
hand. Has not the LORD gone before you?” So
Barak came down from Mount
Tabor with ten thousand men following him.
Then Jael
Heber’s wife took a
nail of the tent, and took an hammer in her
hand, and went softly unto him, and
smote the
nail into his temples, and fastened it into the ground: for he was fast
asleep and
weary. So he died.
But as he lay sleeping from
exhaustion,
Heber’s wife Jael took a tent
peg,
grabbed a hammer, and went silently to Sisera. She drove the
peg through his temple and into the ground, and he died.
And the
hand of the children of Israel
prospered, and prevailed against Jabin the king of
Canaan, until they had destroyed Jabin king of
Canaan.
And the
hand of the Israelites grew stronger and stronger against Jabin king of
Canaan until they destroyed him.
Out of Ephraim was there a root of them against Amalek; after thee, Benjamin, among thy people; out of Machir came down governors, and out of
Zebulun they that
handle the pen of the writer.
Some came from Ephraim, with their roots in Amalek; Benjamin came with your people after you. The commanders came down from Machir, the bearers of the marshal’s staff from
Zebulun.
She put her
hand to the
nail, and her right
hand to the workmen’s hammer; and with the hammer she
smote Sisera, she
smote off his head, when she had pierced and
stricken through his temples.
She reached for the tent
peg, her right
hand for the
workman’s hammer. She struck Sisera and
crushed his skull; she
shattered and pierced his temple.
And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD delivered them into the
hand of
Midian seven years.
Again the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD; so He delivered them into the
hand of
Midian for seven years,
And the
hand of
Midian prevailed against Israel: and because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and caves, and strong holds.
and the
hand of
Midian prevailed against Israel. Because of the Midianites, the Israelites prepared shelters for themselves in the mountains, caves, and strongholds.
And I delivered you out of the
hand of the Egyptians, and out of the
hand of all that
oppressed you, and
drave them out from before you, and gave you their land;
I delivered you out of the hands of Egypt and all your oppressors. I drove them out before you and gave you their land.
And
Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this
befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath
forsaken us, and delivered us into the
hands of the Midianites.
“Please, my Lord,”
Gideon replied, “if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? And where are all His wonders of which our fathers told us, saying, ‘Has not the LORD brought us up out of Egypt?’ But now the LORD has
forsaken us and delivered us into the
hand of
Midian.”
And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?
The LORD turned to him and said, “Go in the strength you have and save Israel from the
hand of
Midian. Am I not sending you?”
Then the angel of the LORD put forth the end of the staff that was in his
hand, and touched the flesh and the
unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the
unleavened cakes. Then the angel of the LORD departed out of his sight.
Then the angel of the LORD extended the
tip of the staff that was in his
hand and touched the meat and the
unleavened bread. And fire
flared from the rock and consumed the meat and the
unleavened bread. Then the angel of the LORD
vanished from his sight.
And
Gideon said unto God, If thou
wilt save Israel by mine
hand, as thou hast said,
Then
Gideon said to God, “If You are going to save Israel by my
hand, as You have said,
Behold, I will put a
fleece of wool in the floor; and if the
dew be on the
fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that thou
wilt save Israel by mine
hand, as thou hast said.
then behold, I will place a
fleece of wool on the
threshing floor. If there is
dew only on the
fleece and all the ground is dry, then I will know that You are going to save Israel by my
hand, as You have said.”
And the LORD said unto
Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their
hands, lest Israel
vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own
hand hath saved me.
Then the LORD said to
Gideon, “You have too many people for Me to deliver
Midian into their
hands, lest Israel
glorify themselves over Me, saying, ‘My own
hand has saved me.’
And the number of them that
lapped, putting their
hand to their mouth, were three hundred men: but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water.
And the number of those who
lapped the water with their
hands to their mouths was three hundred men; all the others
knelt to drink.
And the LORD said unto
Gideon, By the three hundred men that
lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine
hand: and let all the other people go every man unto his place.
Then the LORD said to
Gideon, “With the three hundred men who
lapped the water I will save you and deliver the Midianites into your
hand. But all the others are to go home.”
So the people took
victuals in their
hand, and their
trumpets: and he sent all the rest of Israel every man unto his tent, and retained those three hundred men: and the host of
Midian was beneath him in the valley.
So
Gideon sent the rest of the Israelites to their tents but kept the three hundred men, who took charge of the provisions and rams’ horns of the others. And the camp of
Midian lay below him in the valley.
And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Arise, get thee down unto the host; for I have delivered it into thine hand.
That night the LORD said to
Gideon, “Get up and go down against the camp, for I have delivered it into your
hand.
And thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thine hands be strengthened to go down unto the host. Then went he down with Phurah his servant unto the outside of the armed men that were in the host.
and
listen to what they are saying. Then your
hands will be strengthened to attack the camp.” So he went with Purah his servant to the outposts where armed men were guarding the camp.
And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of
Gideon the son of
Joash, a man of Israel: for into his
hand hath God delivered
Midian, and all the host.
His friend replied: “This is nothing less than the sword of
Gideon son of
Joash, the
Israelite. God has delivered
Midian and the whole camp into his
hand.”
And it was so, when
Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and the interpretation thereof, that he worshipped, and returned into the host of Israel, and said, Arise; for the LORD hath delivered into your
hand the host of
Midian.
When
Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation, he bowed in worship. He returned to the camp of Israel and said, “Get up, for the LORD has delivered the camp of
Midian into your
hand.”
And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a
trumpet in every man’s
hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers.
And he divided the three hundred men into three companies and gave each man a ram’s horn in one
hand and a large
jar in the other, containing a
torch.
So
Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly set the watch: and they
blew the
trumpets, and
brake the pitchers that were in their
hands.
Gideon and the hundred men with him reached the outskirts of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after the changing of the guard. They
blew their horns and broke the jars that were in their
hands.
And the three companies
blew the
trumpets, and
brake the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left
hands, and the
trumpets in their right
hands to blow
withal: and they
cried, The sword of the LORD, and of
Gideon.
The three companies
blew their horns and
shattered their jars. Holding the torches in their left
hands and the horns in their right
hands, they
shouted, “A sword for the LORD and for
Gideon!”
God hath delivered into your
hands the princes of
Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison of you? Then their anger was
abated toward him, when he had said that.
God has delivered Oreb and Zeeb, the two princes of
Midian, into your
hand. What was I able to do compared to you?” When he had said this, their anger against him
subsided.
And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thine army?
But the leaders of Succoth asked, “Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your possession, that we should give bread to your army?”
And
Gideon said, Therefore when the LORD hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into mine
hand, then I will
tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.
“Very well,”
Gideon replied, “when the LORD has delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my
hand, I will
tear your flesh with the thorns and briers of the wilderness!”
And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye did
upbraid me, saying, Are the
hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine
hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are
weary?
And
Gideon went to the men of Succoth and said, “Here are Zebah and Zalmunna, about whom you
taunted me, saying, ‘Are the
hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your possession, that we should give bread to your
weary men?’”
Then the men of Israel said unto
Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son also: for thou hast delivered us from the
hand of
Midian.
Then the Israelites said to
Gideon, “Rule over us—you and your son and grandson—for you have saved us from the
hand of
Midian.”
And the children of Israel remembered not the LORD their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:
The Israelites failed to remember the LORD their God who had delivered them from the hands of all their enemies on every side.
Now therefore, if ye have done truly and
sincerely, in that ye have made
Abimelech king, and if ye have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done unto him according to the deserving of his
hands;
Now if you have acted faithfully and
honestly in making
Abimelech king, if you have done well by Jerubbaal and his family, and if you have done to him as he deserves—
(For my father fought for you, and
adventured his life far, and delivered you out of the
hand of
Midian:
for my father fought for you and risked his life to deliver you from the
hand of
Midian,
And would to God this people were under my
hand! then would I remove
Abimelech. And he said to
Abimelech, Increase thine army, and come out.
If only this people were under my authority, I would remove
Abimelech; I would say to him, ‘Muster your army and come out!’”
And
Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were with him; and
Abimelech took an
axe in his
hand, and cut down a
bough from the trees, and took it, and laid it on his shoulder, and said unto the people that were with him, What ye have seen me do, make
haste, and do as I have done.
he and all his men went up to Mount Zalmon.
Abimelech took his
axe in his
hand and cut a branch from the trees, which he lifted to his shoulder, saying to his men, “
Hurry and do what you have seen me do.”
And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the
hands of the Philistines, and into the
hands of the children of
Ammon.
So the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He sold them into the
hands of the Philistines and
Ammonites,
The Zidonians also, and the
Amalekites, and the Maonites, did
oppress you; and ye
cried to me, and I delivered you out of their
hand.
And the LORD God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the
hand of Israel, and they
smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the
Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.
Then the LORD, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the
hand of Israel, who defeated them. So Israel took possession of all the land of the
Amorites who inhabited that country,
And
Jephthah vowed a
vow unto the LORD, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of
Ammon into mine
hands,
So
Jephthah passed over unto the children of
Ammon to fight against them; and the LORD delivered them into his
hands.
So
Jephthah crossed over to the
Ammonites to fight against them, and the LORD delivered them into his
hand.
And
Jephthah said unto them, I and my people were at great
strife with the children of
Ammon; and when I called you, ye delivered me not out of their
hands.
But
Jephthah replied, “My people and I had a serious conflict with the
Ammonites, and when I called, you did not save me out of their
hands.
And when I saw that ye delivered me not, I put my life in my
hands, and passed over against the children of
Ammon, and the LORD delivered them into my
hand: wherefore then are ye come up unto me this day, to fight against me?
When I saw that you would not save me, I risked my life and crossed over to the
Ammonites, and the LORD delivered them into my
hand. Why then have you come
today to fight against me?”
And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD delivered them into the hand of the Philistines forty years.
Again the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD, so He delivered them into the hand of the Philistines for forty years.
For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no
razor shall come on his head: for the child shall be a
Nazarite unto God from the
womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the
hand of the Philistines.
For behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son. And no
razor shall come over his head, because the boy will be a
Nazirite to God from the
womb, and he will begin the
deliverance of Israel from the
hand of the Philistines.”
But his wife said unto him, If the LORD were pleased to kill us, he would not have received a burnt offering and a meat offering at our hands, neither would he have shewed us all these things, nor would as at this time have told us such things as these.
But his wife replied, “If the LORD had intended to kill us, He would not have accepted the burnt offering and the grain offering from our hands, nor would He have shown us all these things or spoken to us this way.”
And the Spirit of the LORD came
mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a
kid, and he had nothing in his
hand: but he told not his father or his mother what he had done.
and the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon him, and he
tore the lion apart with his bare
hands as one would
tear a young goat. But he did not tell his father or mother what he had done.
And he took thereof in his
hands, and went on eating, and came to his father and mother, and he gave them, and they did eat: but he told not them that he had taken the honey out of the
carcase of the lion.
So he
scooped some honey into his
hands and
ate it as he went along. And when he returned to his father and mother, he gave some to them and they
ate it. But he did not tell them that he had taken the honey from the lion’s
carcass.
And they said unto him, We are come down to bind thee, that we may deliver thee into the
hand of the Philistines. And
Samson said unto them,
Swear unto me, that ye will not fall upon me
yourselves.
But they said to him, “We have come down to arrest you and
hand you over to the Philistines.”
Samson replied, “
Swear to me that you will not kill me
yourselves.”
And they spake unto him, saying, No; but we will bind thee fast, and deliver thee into their hand: but surely we will not kill thee. And they bound him with two new cords, and brought him up from the rock.
“No,” they answered, “we will not kill you, but we will
tie you up securely and
hand you over to them.” So they bound him with two new ropes and led him up from the rock.
And when he came unto Lehi, the Philistines
shouted against him: and the Spirit of the LORD came
mightily upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed from off his
hands.
When
Samson arrived in Lehi, the Philistines came out
shouting against him. And the Spirit of the LORD came
mightily upon him. The ropes on his arms became like burnt flax, and the bonds broke loose from his
hands.
He found the fresh
jawbone of a
donkey, reached out his
hand and took it, and struck down a thousand men.
And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking, that he cast away the
jawbone out of his
hand, and called that place Ramath-lehi.
And when
Samson had finished speaking, he cast the
jawbone from his
hand; and he named that place Ramath-lehi.
And when
Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath shewed me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought money in their
hand.
When
Delilah realized that he had revealed to her all that was in his heart, she sent this message to the lords of the Philistines: “Come up once more, for he has revealed to me all that is in his heart.” Then the lords of the Philistines came to her, bringing the money in their
hands.
Then the lords of the Philistines gathered them together for to offer a great sacrifice unto
Dagon their god, and to
rejoice: for they said, Our god hath delivered
Samson our enemy into our
hand.
Now the lords of the Philistines gathered together to offer a great sacrifice to their god
Dagon. They
rejoiced and said, “Our god has delivered
Samson our enemy into our
hands.”
And when the people saw him, they praised their god: for they said, Our god hath delivered into our
hands our enemy, and the destroyer of our country, which
slew many of us.
And when the people saw him, they praised their god, saying: “Our god has delivered into our hands our enemy who destroyed our land and multiplied our dead.”
And
Samson said unto the
lad that held him by the
hand, Suffer me that I may feel the pillars
whereupon the house standeth, that I may
lean upon them.
Samson said to the servant who held his
hand, “Lead me where I can feel the pillars supporting the temple, so I can
lean against them.”
And
Samson took hold of the two middle pillars upon which the house stood, and on which it was borne up, of the one with his right
hand, and of the other with his left.
And
Samson reached out for the two central pillars supporting the temple.
Bracing himself against them with his right
hand on one
pillar and his left
hand on the other,
And when he had restored the eleven hundred shekels of silver to his mother, his mother said, I had wholly dedicated the silver unto the LORD from my
hand for my son, to make a
graven image and a
molten image: now therefore I will restore it unto thee.
And when he had returned the eleven hundred shekels of silver to his mother, she said, “I wholly
dedicate the silver to the LORD for my son’s benefit, to make a
graven image and a
molten idol. Therefore I will now return it to you.”
When ye go, ye shall come unto a people secure, and to a large land: for God hath given it into your hands; a place where there is no want of any thing that is in the earth.
When you enter, you will come to an
unsuspecting people and a
spacious land, for God has delivered it into your
hand. It is a place where nothing on earth is lacking.”
And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be a priest unto the house of one man, or that thou be a priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?
“Be quiet,” they told him. “Put your hand over your mouth and come with us and be a father and a priest to us. Is it better for you to be a priest for the house of one person or a priest for a tribe and family in Israel?”
Yet there is both straw and
provender for our
asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy
handmaid, and for the young man which is with thy servants: there is no want of any thing.
even though there is both straw and feed for our
donkeys, and bread and wine for me and the
maidservant and young man with me. There is nothing that we, your servants, lack.”
And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way: and, behold, the woman his
concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, and her
hands were upon the
threshold.
In the morning, when her master got up and opened the doors of the house to go out on his journey, there was his
concubine,
collapsed in the
doorway of the house, with her
hands on the
threshold.
Now therefore deliver us the men, the children of
Belial, which are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Israel. But the children of Benjamin would not
hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Israel:
Hand over the wicked men of Gibeah so we can put them to death and
purge Israel of this evil.” But the Benjamites refused to
heed the voice of their fellow Israelites.
Among all this people there were seven hundred chosen men lefthanded; every one could
sling stones at an hair breadth, and not miss.
Among all these soldiers there were 700 select left-
handers, each of whom could
sling a stone at a hair without missing.
And
Phinehas, the son of
Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days,) saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease? And the LORD said, Go up; for to
morrow I will deliver them into thine
hand.
and
Phinehas son of
Eleazar, the son of Aaron, served before it.) The Israelites asked, “Should we again go out to battle against our brothers the Benjamites, or should we stop?” The LORD answered, “Fight, for
tomorrow I will deliver them into your
hand.”
And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and
smote them with the edge of the sword, as well the men of every city, as the beast, and all that came to
hand: also they set on fire all the cities that they came to.
And the men of Israel turned back against the other Benjamites and put to the sword all the cities, including the animals and everything else they found. And they burned down all the cities in their path.
Would ye
tarry for them till they were grown? would ye stay for them from having husbands?
nay, my daughters; for it grieveth me much for your sakes that the
hand of the LORD is gone out against me.
would you wait for them to grow up? Would you
refrain from having husbands? No, my daughters, it grieves me very much for your sakes that the
hand of the LORD has gone out against me.”
Then she said, Let me find favour in thy sight, my lord; for that thou hast comforted me, and for that thou hast spoken friendly unto thine
handmaid, though I be not like unto one of thine
handmaidens.
“My lord,” she said, “may I continue to find favor in your eyes, for you have comforted and spoken kindly to your
maidservant, though I am not like one of your servant girls.”
And let fall also some of the
handfuls of purpose for her, and leave them, that she may
glean them, and
rebuke her not.
Rather, pull out for her some stalks from the bundles and leave them for her to gather. Do not
rebuke her.”
“Who are you?” he asked. “I am your servant
Ruth,” she replied. “Spread the corner of your garment over me, for you are a
kinsman-
redeemer.”
And she said, These six measures of barley gave he me; for he said to me, Go not empty unto thy mother in law.
And she said, “He gave me these six measures of barley, for he said, ‘Do not go back to your mother-in-law empty-handed.’”
Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the
hand of
Naomi, thou must
buy it also of
Ruth the
Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance.
Then Boaz said, “On the day you
buy the land from
Naomi and also from
Ruth the
Moabitess, you must also acquire the widow of the deceased in order to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance.”
And Boaz said unto the elders, and unto all the people, Ye are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech’s, and all that was Chilion’s and Mahlon’s, of the
hand of
Naomi.
At this, Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses
today that I am
buying from
Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech, Chilion, and Mahlon.
