Moab is
spoiled, and gone up out of
her cities, and his chosen young men are gone down to the slaughter, saith the King, whose name is the LORD of hosts.
Moab has been destroyed and its towns have been invaded; the best of its young men have gone down in the slaughter, declares the King, whose name is the LORD of Hosts.
O inhabitant of Aroer, stand by the way, and
espy; ask him that fleeth, and
her that escapeth, and say, What is done?
Stand by the road and watch, O dweller of Aroer! Ask the man
fleeing or the woman escaping, ‘What has happened?’
O ye that dwell in Moab, leave the cities, and dwell in the rock, and be like the
dove that maketh
her nest in the sides of the hole’s mouth.
Abandon the towns and settle among the rocks, O dwellers of Moab! Be like a
dove that nests at the mouth of a cave.
Therefore will I
howl for Moab, and I will cry out for all Moab; mine heart shall
mourn for the men of Kir-
heres.
Therefore I will
wail for Moab; I will cry out for all of Moab; I will
moan for the men of Kir-
heres.
Therefore mine heart shall sound for Moab like pipes, and mine heart shall sound like pipes for the men of Kir-
heres: because the riches that he hath
gotten are perished.
Therefore My heart laments like a
flute for Moab; it laments like a
flute for the men of Kir-
heres, because the wealth they acquired has perished.
Kerioth is taken, and the strong holds are surprised, and the mighty men’s hearts in Moab at that day shall be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.
Kirioth has been taken, and the strongholds seized. In that day the heart of Moab’s warriors will be like the heart of a woman in labor.
Yet will I bring again the captivity of Moab in the latter days, saith the LORD. Thus far is the judgment of Moab.
Yet in the latter days I will restore Moab from captivity,” declares the LORD. Here ends the judgment on Moab.
Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will cause an
alarm of war to be heard in Rabbah of the
Ammonites; and it shall be a
desolate heap, and
her daughters shall be burned with fire: then shall Israel be heir unto them that were his heirs, saith the LORD.
Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will sound the battle cry against Rabbah of the
Ammonites. It will become a
heap of ruins, and its villages will be burned. Then Israel will drive out their dispossessors, says the LORD.
Wherefore gloriest thou in the valleys, thy flowing valley, O
backsliding daughter? that trusted in
her treasures, saying, Who shall come unto me?
Why do you
boast of your valleys— your valleys so fruitful, O faithless daughter? You trust in your riches and say, ‘Who can come against me?’
For I have
sworn by myself, saith the LORD, that
Bozrah shall become a
desolation, a reproach, a waste, and a
curse; and all the cities thereof shall be perpetual wastes.
I have heard a rumour from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent unto the heathen, saying, Gather ye together, and come against her, and rise up to the battle.
I have heard a message from the LORD; an
envoy has been sent to the nations: “
Assemble yourselves to march against
her! Rise up for battle!”
Also
Edom shall be a
desolation: every one that goeth by it shall be
astonished, and shall hiss at all the plagues thereof.
Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan against the
habitation of the strong: but I will suddenly make him run away from
her: and who is a chosen man, that I may
appoint over
her? for who is like me? and who will
appoint me the time? and who is that
shepherd that will stand before me?
Behold, one will come up like a lion from the thickets of the Jordan to the watered pasture. For in an instant I will
chase Edom from
her land. Who is the chosen one I will
appoint for this? For who is like Me, and who can
challenge Me? What
shepherd can stand against Me?”
Behold, he shall come up and fly as the eagle, and spread his wings over
Bozrah: and at that day shall the heart of the mighty men of
Edom be as the heart of a woman in
her pangs.
Look! An eagle will
soar and
swoop down, spreading its wings over
Bozrah. In that day the hearts of
Edom’s mighty men will be like the heart of a woman in labor.
Damascus is waxed feeble, and turneth
herself to
flee, and fear hath seized on
her:
anguish and sorrows have taken
her, as a woman in
travail.
Damascus has become feeble; she has turned to
flee.
Panic has gripped
her;
anguish and pain have seized
her like a woman in labor.
Therefore her young men shall fall in her streets, and all the men of war shall be cut off in that day, saith the LORD of hosts.
For her young men will fall in the streets, and all her warriors will be silenced in that day,” declares the LORD of Hosts.
And their camels shall be a
booty, and the multitude of their cattle a
spoil: and I will
scatter into all winds them that are in the utmost corners; and I will bring their
calamity from all sides thereof, saith the LORD.
Their camels will become
plunder, and their large
herds will be
spoil. I will
scatter to the wind in every direction those who
shave their temples; I will bring
calamity on them from all sides,” declares the LORD.
Declare ye among the nations, and
publish, and set up a standard;
publish, and
conceal not: say, Babylon is taken,
Bel is confounded, Merodach is broken in pieces;
her idols are confounded,
her images are broken in pieces.
“
Announce and declare to the nations; lift up a
banner and
proclaim it; hold nothing back when you say, ‘Babylon is captured;
Bel is put to shame; Marduk is
shattered,
her images are disgraced,
her idols are broken in pieces.’
For out of the north there cometh up a nation against
her, which shall make
her land
desolate, and none shall dwell therein: they shall remove, they shall depart, both man and beast.
For a nation from the north will come against
her; it will make
her land a
desolation. No one will live in it; both man and beast will
flee.”
For, lo, I will raise and cause to come up against Babylon an assembly of great nations from the north country: and they shall set themselves in
array against
her; from thence she shall be taken: their arrows shall be as of a mighty
expert man; none shall return in vain.
For behold, I
stir up and bring against Babylon an assembly of great nations from the land of the north. They will line up against
her; from the north she will be captured. Their arrows will be like skilled warriors who do not return empty-handed.
Because of the wrath of the LORD it shall not be inhabited, but it shall be wholly
desolate: every one that goeth by Babylon shall be
astonished, and hiss at all
her plagues.
Because of the wrath of the LORD, she will not be inhabited; she will become completely
desolate. All who pass through Babylon will be
horrified and will hiss at all
her wounds.
Put
yourselves in
array against Babylon round about: all ye that bend the bow, shoot at
her,
spare no arrows: for she hath
sinned against the LORD.
Line up in formation around Babylon, all you who draw the bow! Shoot at
her!
Spare no arrows! For she has
sinned against the LORD.
Shout against
her round about: she hath given
her hand:
her foundations are fallen,
her walls are thrown down: for it is the
vengeance of the LORD: take
vengeance upon
her; as she hath done, do unto
her.
Raise a war cry against
her on every side! She has thrown up
her hands in surrender;
her towers have fallen;
her walls are
torn down. Since this is the
vengeance of the LORD, take out your
vengeance upon
her; as she has done, do the same to
her.
Come against her from the utmost border, open her storehouses: cast her up as heaps, and destroy her utterly: let nothing of her be left.
Come against
her from the
farthest border. Break open
her granaries; pile
her up like mounds of grain.
Devote her to destruction; leave
her no survivors.
Slay all
her bullocks; let them go down to the slaughter:
woe unto them! for their day is come, the time of their
visitation.
Kill all
her young bulls; let them go down to the slaughter.
Woe to them, for their day has come— the time of their punishment.
Call together the archers against Babylon: all ye that bend the bow, camp against it round about; let none thereof escape:
recompense her according to
her work; according to all that she hath done, do unto
her: for she hath been proud against the LORD, against the Holy One of Israel.
Summon the archers against Babylon, all who string the bow.
Encamp all around
her; let no one escape. Repay
her according to
her deeds; do to
her as she has done. For she has
defied the LORD, the Holy One of Israel.
Therefore shall her young men fall in the streets, and all her men of war shall be cut off in that day, saith the LORD.
Therefore, her young men will fall in the streets, and all her warriors will be silenced in that day,” declares the LORD.
A sword is upon the Chaldeans, saith the LORD, and upon the inhabitants of Babylon, and upon her princes, and upon her wise men.
A sword is against the Chaldeans, declares the LORD, against those who live in Babylon, and against her officials and wise men.
A sword is upon the liars; and they shall
dote: a sword is upon
her mighty men; and they shall be dismayed.
A sword is against her false prophets, and they will become fools. A sword is against her warriors, and they will be filled with terror.
A sword is upon their horses, and upon their
chariots, and upon all the mingled people that are in the midst of
her; and they shall become as women: a sword is upon
her treasures; and they shall be
robbed.
A sword is against
her horses and
chariots and against all the foreigners in
her midst, and they will become like women. A sword is against
her treasuries, and they will be
plundered.
A
drought is upon
her waters; and they shall be dried up: for it is the land of
graven images, and they are
mad upon their idols.
A
drought is upon
her waters, and they will be dried up. For it is a land of
graven images, and the people go
mad over idols.
Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan unto the
habitation of the strong: but I will make them suddenly run away from
her: and who is a chosen man, that I may
appoint over
her? for who is like me? and who will
appoint me the time? and who is that
shepherd that will stand before me?
Behold, one will come up like a lion from the thickets of the Jordan to the watered pasture. For in an instant I will
chase Babylon from
her land. Who is the chosen one I will
appoint for this? For who is like Me, and who can
challenge Me? What
shepherd can stand against Me?”
And will send unto Babylon fanners, that shall
fan her, and shall empty
her land: for in the day of trouble they shall be against
her round about.
I will send strangers to Babylon to
winnow her and empty
her land; for they will come against
her from every side in
her day of
disaster.
Against him that bendeth let the archer bend his bow, and against him that lifteth himself up in his
brigandine: and
spare ye not
her young men; destroy ye utterly all
her host.
Do not let the archer bend his bow or put on his
armor. Do not
spare her young men;
devote all
her army to destruction!
Thus the slain shall fall in the land of the Chaldeans, and they that are thrust through in her streets.
And they will fall slain in the land of the Chaldeans, and pierced through in her streets.
Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver every man his soul: be not cut off in
her iniquity; for this is the time of the LORD’S
vengeance; he will render unto
her a recompence.
Flee from Babylon! Escape with your lives! Do not be destroyed in
her punishment. For this is the time of the LORD’s
vengeance; He will pay
her what she deserves.
Babylon hath been a golden cup in the LORD’S hand, that made all the earth
drunken: the nations have
drunken of
her wine; therefore the nations are
mad.
Babylon was a gold cup in the hand of the LORD, making the whole earth
drunk. The nations
drank her wine; therefore the nations have gone
mad.
Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed:
howl for
her; take
balm for
her pain, if so she may be
healed.
Suddenly Babylon has fallen and been
shattered.
Wail for
her; get
her balm for
her pain; perhaps she can be
healed.
We would have
healed Babylon, but she is not
healed:
forsake her, and let us go every one into his own country: for
her judgment reacheth unto heaven, and is lifted up even to the
skies.
“We tried to
heal Babylon, but she could not be
healed.
Abandon her! Let each of us go to his own land, for
her judgment extends to the sky and reaches to the clouds.”
Make bright the arrows; gather the shields: the LORD hath raised up the spirit of the kings of the Medes: for his
device is against Babylon, to destroy it; because it is the
vengeance of the LORD, the
vengeance of his temple.
Sharpen the arrows! Fill the quivers! The LORD has
aroused the spirit of the kings of the Medes, because His plan is aimed at Babylon to destroy
her, for it is the
vengeance of the LORD—
vengeance for His temple.
Set ye up a standard in the land, blow the
trumpet among the nations, prepare the nations against
her, call together against
her the kingdoms of
Ararat, Minni, and Ashchenaz;
appoint a captain against
her; cause the horses to come up as the rough caterpillers.
“Raise a
banner in the land! Blow the ram’s horn among the nations! Prepare the nations against
her.
Summon the kingdoms against
her—
Ararat, Minni, and
Ashkenaz.
Appoint a captain against
her; bring up horses like
swarming locusts.
Prepare against her the nations with the kings of the Medes, the captains thereof, and all the rulers thereof, and all the land of his dominion.
Prepare the nations for battle against her— the kings of the Medes, their governors and all their officials, and all the lands they rule.
The mighty men of Babylon have forborn to fight, they have remained in their holds: their might hath failed; they became as women: they have burned her dwellingplaces; her bars are broken.
The warriors of Babylon have stopped fighting; they sit in their strongholds. Their strength is exhausted; they have become like women. Babylon’s homes have been set
ablaze, the bars of
her gates are broken.
For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; The daughter of Babylon is like a threshingfloor, it is time to
thresh her: yet a little while, and the time of
her harvest shall come.
For this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: “The Daughter of Babylon is like a
threshing floor at the time it is
trampled. In just a little while
her harvest time will come.”
Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will
plead thy cause, and take
vengeance for thee; and I will dry up
her sea, and make
her springs dry.
Therefore this is what the LORD says: “Behold, I will
plead your case and take
vengeance on your behalf; I will dry up
her sea and make
her springs run dry.
Her cities are a
desolation, a dry land, and a wilderness, a land wherein no man dwelleth, neither
doth any son of man pass thereby.
Her cities have become a
desolation, a dry and
arid land, a land where no one lives, where no son of man passes through.
My people, go ye out of the midst of her, and deliver ye every man his soul from the fierce anger of the LORD.
Come out of her, My people! Save your lives, each of you, from the fierce anger of the LORD.
Therefore, behold, the days come, that I will do judgment upon the
graven images of Babylon: and
her whole land shall be confounded, and all
her slain shall fall in the midst of
her.
Therefore, behold, the days are coming when I will
punish the idols of Babylon.
Her entire land will suffer shame, and all
her slain will lie fallen within
her.
Then the heaven and the earth, and all that is therein, shall sing for Babylon: for the spoilers shall come unto her from the north, saith the LORD.
Then heaven and earth and all that is in them will
shout for joy over Babylon because the destroyers from the north will come against
her,” declares the LORD.
Wherefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will do judgment upon
her graven images: and through all
her land the wounded shall
groan.
“Therefore, behold, the days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will
punish her idols, and throughout
her land the wounded will
groan.
Though Babylon should mount up to heaven, and though she should
fortify the height of
her strength, yet from me shall spoilers come unto
her, saith the LORD.
Even if Babylon ascends to the heavens and fortifies
her lofty
stronghold, the destroyers I send will come against
her,” declares the LORD.
Because the LORD hath
spoiled Babylon, and destroyed out of
her the great voice; when
her waves do
roar like great waters, a noise of their voice is uttered:
For the LORD will destroy Babylon; He will silence
her mighty voice. The waves will
roar like great waters; the
tumult of their voices will resound.
Because the
spoiler is come upon
her, even upon Babylon, and
her mighty men are taken, every one of their bows is broken: for the LORD God of recompences shall surely requite.
For a destroyer is coming against
her— against Babylon.
Her warriors will be captured, and their bows will be broken, for the LORD is a God of
retribution; He will repay in full.
And I will make
drunk her princes, and
her wise men,
her captains, and
her rulers, and
her mighty men: and they shall sleep a perpetual sleep, and not
wake, saith the King, whose name is the LORD of hosts.
I will make
her princes and wise men
drunk, along with
her governors, officials, and warriors. Then they will fall
asleep forever and not
wake up,” declares the King, whose name is the LORD of Hosts.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts; The broad walls of Babylon shall be utterly broken, and
her high gates shall be burned with fire; and the people shall labour in vain, and the
folk in the fire, and they shall be
weary.
This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Babylon’s thick walls will be leveled, and
her high gates consumed by fire. So the labor of the people will be for nothing; the nations will
exhaust themselves to fuel the flames.”
And thou shalt say, Thus shall Babylon sink, and shall not rise from the evil that I will bring upon
her: and they shall be
weary. Thus far are the words of Jeremiah.
Then you are to say, ‘In the same way Babylon will sink and never rise again, because of the
disaster I will bring upon
her. And
her people will grow
weary.’”
Here end the words of Jeremiah.
She weepeth
sore in the night, and
her tears are on
her cheeks: among all
her lovers she hath none to comfort
her: all
her friends have dealt
treacherously with
her, they are become
her enemies.
She weeps
aloud in the night, with tears upon
her cheeks. Among all
her lovers there is no one to comfort
her. All
her friends have
betrayed her; they have become
her enemies.
Judah is gone into captivity because of
affliction, and because of great
servitude: she dwelleth among the heathen, she findeth no rest: all
her persecutors overtook
her between the straits.
Judah has gone into exile under
affliction and harsh slavery; she dwells among the nations but finds no place to rest. All
her pursuers have overtaken
her in the midst of
her distress.
The ways of
Zion do
mourn, because none come to the solemn feasts: all
her gates are
desolate:
her priests
sigh,
her virgins are
afflicted, and she is in bitterness.
The roads to
Zion mourn, because no one comes to
her appointed feasts. All
her gates are deserted;
her priests
groan,
her maidens
grieve, and she
herself is bitter with
anguish.
Her adversaries are the chief,
her enemies
prosper; for the LORD hath
afflicted her for the multitude of
her transgressions:
her children are gone into captivity before the enemy.
Her foes have become
her masters;
her enemies are at ease. For the LORD has brought
her grief because of
her many transgressions.
Her children have gone away as
captives before the enemy.
And from the daughter of
Zion all
her beauty is departed:
her princes are become like harts that find no pasture, and they are gone without strength before the pursuer.
All the
splendor has departed from the Daughter of
Zion.
Her princes are like deer that find no pasture; they lack the strength to
flee in the face of the hunter.
Jerusalem remembered in the days of
her affliction and of
her miseries all
her pleasant things that she had in the days of old, when
her people fell into the hand of the enemy, and none did help
her: the
adversaries saw
her, and did
mock at
her sabbaths.
In the days of
her affliction and wandering Jerusalem remembers all the treasures that were
hers in days of old. When
her people fell into enemy hands she received no help.
Her enemies looked upon
her,
laughing at
her downfall.
Jerusalem hath
grievously sinned; therefore she is removed: all that honoured
her despise her, because they have seen
her nakedness:
yea, she sigheth, and turneth backward.
Jerusalem has
sinned greatly; therefore she has become an object of
scorn. All who honored
her now
despise her, for they have seen
her nakedness; she
herself groans and turns away.
Her filthiness is in
her skirts; she remembereth not
her last end; therefore she came down wonderfully: she had no comforter. O LORD, behold my
affliction: for the enemy hath
magnified himself.
Her uncleanness stains
her skirts; she did not consider
her end.
Her downfall was
astounding; there was no one to comfort
her. Look, O LORD, on my
affliction, for the enemy has triumphed!
The
adversary hath spread out his hand upon all
her pleasant things: for she hath seen that the heathen entered into
her sanctuary, whom thou
didst command that they should not enter into thy congregation.
The
adversary has seized all
her treasures. For she has seen the nations enter
her sanctuary— those You had forbidden to enter Your assembly.
All
her people
sigh, they seek bread; they have given their pleasant things for meat to
relieve the soul: see, O LORD, and consider; for I am become
vile.
All
her people
groan as they search for bread. They have traded their treasures for food to keep themselves alive. Look, O LORD, and consider, for I have become
despised.
Zion spreadeth forth
her hands, and there is none to comfort
her: the LORD hath commanded concerning Jacob, that his
adversaries should be round about him: Jerusalem is as a
menstruous woman among them.
Zion stretches out
her hands, but there is no one to comfort
her. The LORD has decreed against Jacob that his neighbors become his foes. Jerusalem has become an unclean thing among them.
The Lord hath
swallowed up all the habitations of Jacob, and hath not
pitied: he hath thrown down in his wrath the strong holds of the daughter of Judah; he hath brought them down to the ground: he hath
polluted the kingdom and the princes thereof.
Without
pity the Lord has
swallowed up all the dwellings of Jacob. In His wrath He has
demolished the fortified cities of the Daughter of Judah. He brought to the ground and
defiled her kingdom and its princes.
The Lord was as an enemy: he hath
swallowed up Israel, he hath
swallowed up all
her palaces: he hath destroyed his strong holds, and hath increased in the daughter of Judah
mourning and
lamentation.
The Lord is like an enemy; He has
swallowed up Israel. He has
swallowed up all
her palaces and destroyed
her strongholds. He has multiplied
mourning and
lamentation for the Daughter of Judah.
And he hath violently taken away his tabernacle, as if it were of a garden: he hath destroyed his places of the assembly: the LORD hath caused the solemn feasts and sabbaths to be forgotten in
Zion, and hath
despised in the
indignation of his anger the king and the priest.
He has laid waste His tabernacle like a garden
booth; He has destroyed His place of meeting. The LORD has made
Zion forget her appointed feasts and Sabbaths. In His fierce anger He has
despised both king and priest.
The Lord hath cast off his altar, he hath
abhorred his sanctuary, he hath given up into the hand of the enemy the walls of
her palaces; they have made a noise in the house of the LORD, as in the day of a solemn feast.
The Lord has rejected His altar; He has abandoned His sanctuary; He has delivered the walls of
her palaces into the hand of the enemy. They have raised a
shout in the house of the LORD as on the day of an appointed feast.
Her gates are sunk into the ground; he hath destroyed and broken her bars: her king and her princes are among the Gentiles: the law is no more; her prophets also find no vision from the LORD.
Her gates have sunk into the ground; He has destroyed and
shattered their bars.
Her king and
her princes are exiled among the nations, the law is no more, and even
her prophets find no vision from the LORD.
All thine enemies have opened their mouth against thee: they hiss and
gnash the teeth: they say, We have
swallowed her up: certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found, we have seen it.
All your enemies open their mouths against you. They hiss and
gnash their teeth, saying, “We have
swallowed her up. This is the day for which we have waited. We have lived to see it!”
For the punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the punishment of the sin of
Sodom, that was overthrown as in a moment, and no hands stayed on
her.
The punishment of the daughter of my people is greater than that of
Sodom, which was overthrown in an instant without a hand turned to help
her.
Her dignitaries were brighter than snow, whiter than milk; their bodies were more
ruddy than
rubies, their appearance like sapphires.
The LORD hath accomplished his
fury; he hath poured out his fierce anger, and hath
kindled a fire in
Zion, and it hath
devoured the foundations thereof.
The LORD has exhausted His wrath; He has poured out His fierce anger; He has
kindled a fire in
Zion, and it has consumed
her foundations.
For the sins of
her prophets, and the
iniquities of
her priests, that have shed the blood of the just in the midst of
her,
But this was for the sins of her prophets and the guilt of her priests, who shed the blood of the righteous in her midst.
They
cried unto them, Depart ye; it is unclean; depart, depart, touch not: when they fled away and
wandered, they said among the heathen, They shall no more
sojourn there.
“Go away! Unclean!” men
shouted at them. “Away, away! Do not touch us!” So they fled and
wandered. Among the nations it was said, “They can stay
here no longer.”
Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, eat that thou findest; eat this roll, and go speak unto the house of Israel.
“Son of man,” He said to me, “eat what you find
here. Eat this
scroll, then go and speak to the house of Israel.”
Thus saith the Lord GOD; This is Jerusalem: I have set it in the midst of the nations and countries that are round about her.
This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘This is Jerusalem, which I have set in the center of the nations, with countries all around her.
And she hath changed my judgments into wickedness more than the nations, and my statutes more than the countries that are round about her: for they have refused my judgments and my statutes, they have not walked in them.
But she has rebelled against My ordinances more wickedly than the nations, and against My statutes worse than the countries around her. For her people have rejected My ordinances and have not walked in My statutes.’
Behold the day, behold, it is come: the morning is gone forth; the rod hath
blossomed, pride hath
budded.
He said
furthermore unto me, Son of man, seest thou what they do? even the great abominations that the house of Israel committeth
here, that I should go far off from my sanctuary? but turn thee yet again, and thou shalt see greater abominations.
“Son of man,” He said to me, “do you see what they are doing—the great abominations that the house of Israel is
committing—to drive Me far from My sanctuary? Yet you will see even greater abominations.”
And he said unto me, Go in, and behold the wicked abominations that they do here.
Then He said to me, “Go in and see the wicked abominations they are
committing here.”
Then he said unto me, Hast thou seen this, O son of man? Is it a light thing to the house of Judah that they commit the abominations which they commit
here? for they have filled the land with violence, and have returned to
provoke me to anger: and, lo, they put the branch to their nose.
“Son of man,” He said to me, “do you see this? Is it not enough for the house of Judah to commit the abominations they are practicing
here, that they must also fill the land with violence and continually
provoke Me to anger? Look, they are even putting the branch to their nose!
Say, I am your sign: like as I have done, so shall it be done unto them: they shall remove and go into captivity.
You are to say, ‘I am a sign to you.’ Just as it happened
here, so will it be done to them; they will go into exile as
captives.
And say unto the people of the land, Thus saith the Lord GOD of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and of the land of Israel; They shall eat their bread with carefulness, and drink their water with
astonishment, that
her land may be
desolate from all that is therein, because of the violence of all them that dwell therein.
Then tell the people of the land that this is what the Lord GOD says about those living in Jerusalem and in the land of Israel: ‘They will eat their bread with
anxiety and drink their water in
dread, for their land will be
stripped of everything in it because of the violence of all who dwell in it.
To wit, the prophets of Israel which
prophesy concerning Jerusalem, and which see visions of peace for
her, and there is no peace, saith the Lord GOD.
those prophets of Israel who
prophesied to Jerusalem and saw a vision of peace for
her when there was no peace, declares the Lord GOD.’
Son of man, cause Jerusalem to know her abominations,
“Son of man,
confront Jerusalem with
her abominations
And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD unto Jerusalem; Thy birth and thy
nativity is of the land of
Canaan; thy father was an Amorite, and thy mother an Hittite.
and tell
her that this is what the Lord GOD says to Jerusalem: Your origin and your birth were in the land of the
Canaanites. Your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite.
So you extended your
promiscuity to
Chaldea, the land of merchants—but even with this you were not satisfied!
But as a wife that committeth
adultery, which taketh strangers instead of
her husband!
You
adulterous wife! You receive strangers instead of your own husband!
Behold, every one that useth
proverbs shall use this
proverb against thee, saying, As is the mother, so is
her daughter.
Thou art thy mother’s daughter, that lotheth
her husband and
her children; and thou art the sister of thy sisters, which
lothed their husbands and their children: your mother was an Hittite, and your father an Amorite.
You are the daughter of your mother, who
despised her husband and children. You are the sister of your sisters, who
despised their husbands and children. Your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite.
And thine elder sister is Samaria, she and
her daughters that dwell at thy left hand: and thy younger sister, that dwelleth at thy right hand, is
Sodom and
her daughters.
Your older sister was Samaria, who lived with
her daughters to your north; and your younger sister was
Sodom, who lived with
her daughters to your south.
As I live, saith the Lord GOD,
Sodom thy sister hath not done, she nor
her daughters, as thou hast done, thou and thy daughters.
As surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, your sister
Sodom and
her daughters never did as you and your daughters have done.
Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister
Sodom, pride,
fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in
her and in
her daughters, neither did she
strengthen the hand of the poor and
needy.
Now this was the iniquity of your sister
Sodom: She and
her daughters were
arrogant, overfed, and
complacent; they did not help the poor and
needy.
When I shall bring again their captivity, the captivity of
Sodom and
her daughters, and the captivity of Samaria and
her daughters, then will I bring again the captivity of thy
captives in the midst of them:
But I will restore
Sodom and
her daughters from captivity, as well as Samaria and
her daughters. And I will restore you along with them.
