And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the
synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at
his feet,
A
synagogue leader named Jairus arrived, and seeing Jesus, he fell at
His feet
When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment.
When the woman heard about Jesus, she came up through the crowd behind Him and touched
His cloak.
For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole.
For she kept saying, “If only I touch
His garments, I will be
healed.”
And
his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude
thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?
His disciples answered, “You can see the crowd pressing in on You, and yet You ask, ‘Who touched Me?’”
And they
laughed him to
scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the
damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the
damsel was lying.
And they
laughed at Him. After He had put them all outside, He took the child’s father and mother and
His own companions, and went in to see the child.
And he went out from thence, and came into his own country; and his disciples follow him.
Jesus went on from there and came to His hometown, accompanied by His disciples.
And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the
synagogue: and many hearing him were
astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by
his hands?
When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the
synagogue, and many who heard Him were
astonished. “Where did this man get these ideas?” they asked. “What is this wisdom He has been given? And how can He perform such miracles?
Is not this the
carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not
his sisters here with us? And they were
offended at him.
Isn’t this the
carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joses,
Judas, and Simon? Aren’t
His sisters here with us as well?” And they took
offense at Him.
But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in
his own country, and among
his own
kin, and in
his own house.
Then Jesus said to them, “Only in his hometown, among his relatives, and in his own household is a prophet without honor.”
And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid
his hands upon a few sick
folk, and
healed them.
So He could not perform any miracles there, except to lay
His hands on a few of the sick and
heal them.
And king Herod heard of him; (for
his name was spread abroad:) and he said, That John the Baptist was risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do
shew forth themselves in him.
Now King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known, and people were saying, “John the Baptist has risen from the dead! That is why
miraculous powers are at work in him.”
For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife: for he had married her.
For Herod himself had ordered that John be arrested and bound and imprisoned, on account of his brother Philip’s wife Herodias, whom Herod had married.
And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on
his birthday made a
supper to
his lords, high captains, and chief estates of
Galilee;
On Herod’s
birthday, her opportunity arose. Herod held a
banquet for
his nobles and military commanders and the leading men of
Galilee.
And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the
damsel, Ask of me
whatsoever thou
wilt, and I will give it thee.
When the daughter of Herodias came and danced, she pleased Herod and
his guests, and the king said to the
girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.”
And the king was exceeding
sorry; yet for
his oath’s sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not
reject her.
The king was consumed with sorrow, but because of his oaths and his guests, he did not want to refuse her.
And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded
his head to be brought: and he went and
beheaded him in the prison,
So without delay, the king commanded that John’s head be brought in. He sent an executioner, who went and
beheaded him in the prison.
And brought
his head in a charger, and gave it to the
damsel: and the
damsel gave it to her mother.
The man brought John’s head on a
platter and presented it to the
girl, who gave it to her mother.
And when
his disciples heard of it, they came and took up
his corpse, and laid it in a tomb.
When John’s disciples heard about this, they came and took his body and placed it in a tomb.
And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a desert place, and now the time is far passed:
By now the hour was already late. So the disciples came to Jesus and said, “This is a
desolate place, and the hour is already late.
And when he had taken the five
loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and
brake the
loaves, and gave them to
his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all.
Taking the five
loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, Jesus spoke a blessing and broke the
loaves. Then He gave them to
His disciples to set before the people. And He divided the two fish among them all.
Immediately Jesus made
His disciples get into the boat and go on
ahead of Him to
Bethsaida, while He dismissed the crowd.
And
whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and
besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of
his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole.
And wherever He went—villages and towns and countrysides—they laid the sick in the marketplaces and
begged Him just to let them touch the
fringe of
His cloak. And all who touched Him were
healed.
And when they saw some of
his disciples eat bread with
defiled, that is to say, with
unwashen, hands, they found fault.
and they saw some of
His disciples eating with hands that were
defiled—that is, unwashed.
For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and,
Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death:
For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’ and ‘
Anyone who curses
his father or mother must be put to death.’
But ye say, If a man shall say to
his father or mother, It is
Corban, that is to say, a gift, by
whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free.
But you say that if a man says to
his father or mother, ‘Whatever you would have received from me is
Corban’ (that is, a gift devoted to God),
And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother;
he is no longer permitted to do anything for his father or mother.
And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable.
After Jesus had left the crowd and gone into the house, His disciples inquired about the parable.
Because it entereth not into
his heart, but into the
belly, and goeth out into the draught,
purging all meats?
because it does not enter
his heart, but it goes into the stomach and then is
eliminated.” (Thus all foods are clean.)
For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet:
Instead, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit soon heard about Jesus, and she came and fell at His feet.
And they bring unto him one that was
deaf, and had an
impediment in
his speech; and they
beseech him to put
his hand upon him.
Some people brought to Him a man who was
deaf and hardly able to speak, and they
begged Jesus to place
His hand on him.
And he took him aside from the multitude, and put
his fingers into
his ears, and he
spit, and touched
his tongue;
So Jesus took him aside privately, away from the crowd, and put
His fingers into the man’s ears. Then He
spit and touched the man’s tongue.
And
straightway his ears were opened, and the string of
his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain.
Immediately the man’s ears were opened and his tongue was released, and he began to speak plainly.
In those days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples unto him, and saith unto them,
In those days the crowd once again became very large, and they had nothing to eat. Jesus called the disciples to Him and said,
And his disciples answered him, From whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness?
His disciples replied, “Where in this
desolate place could
anyone find enough bread to feed all these people?”
And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven
loaves, and gave
thanks, and
brake, and gave to
his disciples to set before them; and they did set them before the people.
And He
instructed the crowd to sit down on the ground. Then He took the seven
loaves, gave
thanks and broke them, and gave them to
His disciples to set before the people. And they distributed them to the crowd.
He got into the boat with
His disciples and went to the district of
Dalmanutha.
And he
sighed deeply in
his spirit, and saith, Why
doth this generation seek after a sign?
verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation.
Jesus
sighed deeply in
His spirit and said, “Why does this generation demand a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to this generation.”
And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had
spit on
his eyes, and put
his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw ought.
So He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village. Then He
spit on the man’s eyes and placed
His hands on him. “Can you see anything?” He asked.
After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly.
Once again Jesus placed His hands on the man’s eyes, and when he opened them his sight was restored, and he could see everything clearly.
And he sent him away to his house, saying, Neither go into the town, nor tell it to any in the town.
Jesus sent him home and said, “Do not go back into the village.”
And Jesus went out, and
his disciples, into the towns of Caesarea
Philippi: and by the way he asked
his disciples, saying unto them, Whom do men say that I am?
Then Jesus and
His disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea
Philippi. On the way, He questioned
His disciples: “Who do people say I am?”
But when he had turned about and looked on
his disciples, he
rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me,
Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.
But Jesus, turning and looking at
His disciples,
rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind Me,
Satan! For you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.”
And when he had called the people unto him with
his disciples also, he said unto them,
Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up
his cross, and follow me.
Then Jesus called the crowd to Him along with
His disciples, and He told them, “If
anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself and take up
his cross and follow Me.
For
whosoever will save
his life shall lose it; but
whosoever shall lose
his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it.
For
whoever wants to save
his life will lose it, but
whoever loses
his life for My sake and for the gospel will save it.
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
What does it profit a man to gain the whole world, yet
forfeit his soul?
Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?
Whosoever therefore shall be
ashamed of me and of my words in this
adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be
ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of
his Father with the holy angels.
If
anyone is
ashamed of Me and My words in this
adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be
ashamed of him when He comes in
His Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
And
his raiment became
shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them.
And when he came to
his disciples, he saw a great multitude about them, and the
scribes questioning with them.
When they returned to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them, and
scribes arguing with them.
And
wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with
his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not.
Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid. I asked Your disciples to drive it out, but they were unable.”
And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child.
Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has this been with him?” “From
childhood,” he said.
But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose.
But Jesus took him by the hand and helped him to his feet, and he stood up.
And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out?
After Jesus had gone into the house, His disciples asked Him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”
For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day.
because He was teaching His disciples. He told them, “The Son of Man will be delivered into the hands of men. They will kill Him, and after three days He will rise.”
And he took a child, and set him in the midst of them: and when he had taken him in his arms, he said unto them,
Then He had a little child stand among them. Taking the child in His arms, He said to them,
For
whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ,
verily I say unto you, he shall not lose
his reward.
Indeed, if
anyone gives you even a cup of water because you bear the name of Christ, truly I tell you, he will never lose
his reward.
And
whosoever shall
offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a
millstone were
hanged about
his neck, and he were cast into the sea.
But if
anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to
stumble, it would be better for him to have a large
millstone hung around
his neck and to be thrown into the sea.
Salt is good: but if the salt have lost
his saltness,
wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in
yourselves, and have peace one with another.
Salt is good, but if the salt loses its saltiness, with what will you season it? Have salt among
yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”
And he arose from thence, and cometh into the coasts of Judaea by the farther side of Jordan: and the people resort unto him again; and, as he was
wont, he taught them again.
Then Jesus left that place and went into the region of
Judea, beyond the Jordan. Again the crowds came to Him and He taught them, as was
His custom.
And the
Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away
his wife?
tempting him.
Some
Pharisees came to test Him. “Is it lawful for a man to
divorce his wife?” they inquired.
And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of
divorcement, and to put her away.
They answered, “Moses permitted a man to write
his wife a
certificate of
divorce and send her away.”
For this cause shall a man leave
his father and mother, and
cleave to
his wife;
‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,
And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter.
When they were back inside the house, the disciples asked Jesus about this matter.
And he saith unto them,
Whosoever shall put away
his wife, and marry another, committeth
adultery against her.
So He told them, “
Whoever divorces
his wife and marries another woman commits
adultery against her.
And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and
his disciples
rebuked those that brought them.
Now people were bringing the little children to Jesus for Him to place
His hands on them, and the disciples
rebuked those who brought them.
And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.
And He took the children in His arms, placed His hands on them, and blessed them.
And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and
kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may
inherit eternal life?
As Jesus started on
His way, a man ran up and
knelt before Him. “Good Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to
inherit eternal life?”
And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!
Then Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!”
And the disciples were
astonished at
his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!
And the disciples were
amazed at
His words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!
For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give
his life a
ransom for many.
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give
His life as a
ransom for many.”
And they came to
Jericho: and as he went out of
Jericho with
his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the
highway side
begging.
Next, they came to
Jericho. And as Jesus and
His disciples were leaving
Jericho with a large crowd, a blind
beggar named Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, was sitting beside the road.
And many charged him that he should hold
his peace: but he
cried the more a great deal, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me.
Many people
admonished him to be silent, but he
cried out all the louder, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus.
Throwing off
his cloak, Bartimaeus
jumped up and came to Jesus.
And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.
“Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has
healed you.” And immediately he received
his sight and followed Jesus along the road.
And when they came
nigh to Jerusalem, unto
Bethphage and
Bethany, at the mount of Olives, he sendeth forth two of
his disciples,
As they approached Jerusalem and came to
Bethphage and
Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent out two of
His disciples
And Jesus answered and said unto it, No man eat fruit of thee
hereafter for ever. And
his disciples heard it.
Then He said to the tree, “May no one ever eat of your fruit again.” And His disciples heard this statement.
And the
scribes and chief priests heard it, and sought how they might destroy him: for they feared him, because all the people was
astonished at
his doctrine.
When the chief priests and
scribes heard this, they looked for a way to kill Him. For they were afraid of Him, because the whole crowd was
astonished at
His teaching.
And when even was come, he went out of the city.
And when evening came, Jesus and His disciples went out of the city.
For
verily I say unto you, That
whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in
his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have
whatsoever he saith.
“Truly I tell you that if
anyone says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and has no doubt in
his heart but believes that it will happen, it will be done for him.
At harvest time, he sent a servant to the tenants to collect
his share of the fruit of the
vineyard.
Having yet therefore one son, his wellbeloved, he sent him also last unto them, saying, They will reverence my son.
Finally, having one beloved son, he sent him to them. ‘They will respect my son,’ he said.
And they send unto him certain of the
Pharisees and of the
Herodians, to catch him in
his words.
Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man’s brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
“Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man is to marry his brother’s widow and raise up offspring for him.
And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.
and to love Him with all your heart and with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your
neighbor as
yourself, which is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”
David therefore himself calleth him Lord; and whence is he then
his son? And the common people heard him
gladly.
David himself calls Him ‘Lord.’ So how can He be David’s son?” And the large crowd
listened to Him with delight.
And he said unto them in
his doctrine,
Beware of the
scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and love
salutations in the marketplaces,
In
His teaching Jesus also said, “Watch out for the
scribes. They like to walk around in long robes, to receive greetings in the marketplaces,
And he called unto him
his disciples, and saith unto them,
Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:
Jesus called His disciples to Him and said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more than all the others into the treasury.
And as he went out of the temple, one of his disciples saith unto him, Master, see what manner of stones and what buildings are here!
As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of His disciples said to Him, “Teacher, look at the magnificent stones and buildings!”
Now the brother shall
betray the brother to death, and the father the son; and children shall rise up against their parents, and shall cause them to be put to death.
Brother will
betray brother to death, and a father
his child. Children will rise against their parents and have them put to death.
And let him that is on the housetop not go down into the house, neither enter therein, to take any thing out of his house:
Let no one on the housetop go back inside to
retrieve anything from
his house.
And let him that is in the field not turn back again for to take up his garment.
And let no one in the field return for
his cloak.
And then shall he send
his angels, and shall gather together
his elect from the four winds, from the
uttermost part of the earth to the
uttermost part of heaven.
And He will send out the angels to gather
His elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.
For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.
It is like a man going on a journey who left
his house, put each servant in charge of
his own task, and
instructed the
doorkeeper to keep watch.
And the first day of
unleavened bread, when they killed the
passover,
his disciples said unto him, Where
wilt thou that we go and prepare that thou mayest eat the
passover?
On the first day of the Feast of
Unleavened Bread, when the
Passover lamb was to be sacrificed, Jesus’ disciples asked Him, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the
Passover?”
And he sendeth forth two of his disciples, and saith unto them, Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him.
So He sent two of
His disciples and told them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a
jug of water will meet you. Follow him,
And
his disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the
passover.
So the disciples left and went into the city, where they found everything as Jesus had described. And they prepared the
Passover.
And he answered and said unto them, It is one of the twelve, that dippeth with me in the
dish.
He answered, “It is one of the Twelve—the one who is
dipping his hand into the
bowl with Me.
And they came to a place which was named
Gethsemane: and he saith to
his disciples, Sit ye here, while I shall pray.
Then they came to a place called
Gethsemane, and Jesus told
His disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”
And one of them that stood by drew a sword, and
smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off
his ear.
And one of the bystanders drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
