(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)
For if someone does not know how to
manage his own household, how can he care for the church of God?
Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
A
deacon must be the husband of but one wife, a good
manager of
his children and of
his own household.
But if any provide not for
his own, and specially for those of
his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an
infidel.
If
anyone does not provide for
his own, and especially
his own household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not
muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of
his reward.
For the Scripture says, “Do not
muzzle an ox while it is
treading out the grain,” and, “The worker is worthy of
his wages.”
Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and
his doctrine be not
blasphemed.
All who are under the yoke of slavery should regard their masters as fully worthy of honor, so that God’s name and our teaching will not be discredited.
I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius
Pilate witnessed a good confession;
I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who made the good confession in
His testimony before Pontius
Pilate:
Which in
his times he shall
shew, who is the blessed and only
Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;
which the blessed and only Sovereign One—the King of kings and Lord of lords—will bring about in His own time.
Be not thou therefore
ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me
his prisoner: but be thou
partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;
So do not be
ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, or of me,
His prisoner. Instead, join me in suffering for the gospel by the power of God.
Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,
He has saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works, but by His own purpose and by the grace He granted us in Christ Jesus before time began.
The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.
May the Lord grant
Onesiphorus His mercy on that day. You know very well how much he ministered to me in Ephesus.
Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.
Nevertheless, God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are
His,” and, “
Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord must turn away from iniquity.”
And that they may recover themselves out of the
snare of the devil, who are taken
captive by him at
his will.
Then they will come to their senses and escape the
snare of the devil, who has taken them
captive to
his will.
I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;
I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of His appearing and His kingdom:
Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
From now on there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will
award to me on that day—and not only to me, but to all who
crave His appearing.
Alexander the
coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord reward him according to
his works:
Alexander the
coppersmith did great
harm to me. The Lord will repay him according to
his deeds.
And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto
his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever.
Amen.
And the Lord will
rescue me from every evil action and bring me safely into
His heavenly kingdom. To Him be the glory
forever and ever.
Amen.
But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;
In
His own time He has made
His word evident in the
proclamation entrusted to me by the command of God our
Savior.
Who gave himself for us, that he might
redeem us from all iniquity, and
purify unto himself a peculiar people,
zealous of good works.
But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,
But when the kindness of God our
Savior and
His love for mankind appeared,
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
He saved us, not by the righteous deeds we had done, but according to
His mercy, through the washing of new birth and
renewal by the Holy Spirit.
That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
so that, having been justified by His grace, we would become heirs with the hope of eternal life.
Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
But in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, and through whom He made the universe.
Who being the brightness of
his glory, and the express image of
his person, and upholding all things by the word of
his power, when he had by himself
purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
The Son is the
radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of
His nature, upholding all things by
His powerful word. After He had provided
purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.
For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I
begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?
For to which of the angels did God ever say: “You are My Son;
today I have become Your Father”? Or again: “I will be
His Father, and He will be My Son”?
And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.
And again, when God brings
His firstborn into the world, He says: “Let all God’s angels worship Him.”
And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.
Now about the angels He says: “He makes His angels winds, His servants flames of fire.”
God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with
divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to
his own will?
and was
affirmed by God through signs, wonders, various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to
His will.
Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him.
and placed everything under his feet.” When God subjected all things to him, He left nothing outside of his control. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to him.
Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
Now since the children have flesh and blood, He too shared in their humanity, so that by His death He might destroy him who holds the power of death, that is, the devil,
Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto
his brethren, that he might be a
merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make
reconciliation for the sins of the people.
For this reason He had to be made like
His brothers in every way, so that He might become a
merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, in order to make
atonement for the sins of the people.
Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.
He was faithful to the One who appointed Him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house.
And Moses
verily was faithful in all
his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after;
Now Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house,
testifying to what would be spoken later.
But Christ as a son over
his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the
rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.
But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are
His house, if we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope of which we
boast.
Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,
Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: “
Today, if you hear
His voice,
While it is said, To day if ye will hear
his voice,
harden not your hearts, as in the
provocation.
As it has been said: “
Today, if you hear
His voice, do not
harden your hearts, as you did in the rebellion.”
And to whom
sware he that they should not enter into
his rest, but to them that believed not?
And to whom did He
swear that they would never enter
His rest? Was it not to those who disobeyed?
Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.
Therefore, while the promise of entering His rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be deemed to have fallen short of it.
For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have
sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.
Now we who have believed enter that rest. As for the others, it is just as God has said: “So I
swore on oath in My anger, ‘They shall never enter My rest.’” And yet
His works have been finished since the foundation of the world.
For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.
For
somewhere He has spoken about the seventh day in this manner: “And on the seventh day God rested from all
His works.”
Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:
Since, then, it remains for some to enter His rest, and since those who formerly heard the good news did not enter because of their disobedience,
Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear
his voice,
harden not your hearts.
God again designated a certain day as “
Today,” when a long time later He spoke through David as was just stated: “
Today, if you hear
His voice, do not
harden your hearts.”
For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.
For
whoever enters God’s rest also rests from
his own work, just as God did from
His.
Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.
Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight; everything is uncovered and exposed before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.
And by reason
hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins.
That is why he is
obligated to offer sacrifices for
his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people.
Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;
During the days of Jesus’ earthly life, He offered up prayers and petitions with loud
cries and tears to the One who could save Him from death, and He was heard because of
His reverence.
For God is not unrighteous to
forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward
his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.
For God is not unjust. He will not
forget your work and the love you have shown for
His name as you have ministered to the saints and continue to do so.
For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could
swear by no greater, he
sware by himself,
When God made
His promise to Abraham, since He had no one greater to
swear by, He
swore by Himself,
Wherein God, willing more abundantly to
shew unto the heirs of promise the
immutability of
his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:
So when God wanted to make the unchanging nature of
His purpose very clear to the heirs of the promise, He
guaranteed it with an oath.
To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of
Salem, which is, King of peace;
and Abraham
apportioned to him a tenth of everything. First,
his name means “king of righteousness.” Then also, “king of
Salem” means “king of peace.”
But he whose descent is not counted from them received
tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises.
But
Melchizedek, who did not trace
his descent from Levi, collected a tenth from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises.
For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him.
(For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, The Lord
sware and will not
repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:)
but Jesus became a priest with an oath by the One who said to Him: “The Lord has
sworn and will not change
His mind: ‘You are a priest
forever.’”
Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.
Unlike the other high priests, He does not need to offer daily sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the sins of the people; He sacrificed for sin once for all when He offered up Himself.
And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.
No longer will each one teach
his neighbor or
his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest.
Neither by the blood of goats and
calves, but by
his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal
redemption for us.
He did not enter by the blood of goats and
calves, but He entered the Most Holy Place once for all by
His own blood, thus securing eternal
redemption.
Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others;
Nor did He enter heaven to offer Himself again and again, as the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own.
From henceforth expecting till
his enemies be made
his footstool.
Since that time, He waits for
His enemies to be made a
footstool for
His feet,
By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the
veil, that is to say,
his flesh;
by the new and living way opened for us through the
curtain of
His body,
For we know him that hath said,
Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will
recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge
his people.
For we know Him who said, “
Vengeance is Mine; I will repay,” and again, “The Lord will judge
His people.”
By faith
Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than
Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God
testifying of
his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.
By faith
Abel offered God a better sacrifice than
Cain did. By faith he was
commended as righteous when God gave
approval to
his gifts. And by faith he still speaks, even though he is dead.
By faith
Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before
his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.
By faith
Enoch was taken up so that he did not see death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.” For before he was taken, he was
commended as one who pleased God.
By faith
Noah, being
warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of
his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.
By faith
Noah, when
warned about things not yet seen, in godly fear built an ark to save
his family. By faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.
By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing
whither he went.
By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, without knowing where he was going.
By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up
his only
begotten son,
By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac on the altar. He who had received the promises was ready to offer his one and only son,
By faith Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshipped,
leaning upon the top of
his staff.
By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph’s sons and worshiped as he
leaned on the top of
his staff.
By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones.
By faith Joseph, when his end was near, spoke about the exodus of the Israelites and gave instructions about his bones.
By faith Moses, when he was born, was
hid three months of
his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment.
By faith Moses’ parents
hid him for three months after
his birth, because they saw that he was a beautiful child, and they were unafraid of the king’s edict.
Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.
He valued disgrace for Christ above the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking
ahead to
his reward.
If ye
endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?
Endure suffering as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by
his father?
For they
verily for a few days
chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of
his holiness.
Our fathers disciplined us for a short time as they thought best, but God disciplines us for our good, so that we may share in
His holiness.
See to it that no one is sexually immoral, or is godless like
Esau, who for a single meal sold
his birthright.
Whose voice then
shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I
shake not the earth only, but also heaven.
At that time
His voice
shook the earth, but now He has promised, “Once more I will
shake not only the earth, but heaven as well.”
Wherefore Jesus also, that he might
sanctify the people with
his own blood, suffered without the gate.
And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate, to
sanctify the people by
His own blood.
Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach.
Therefore let us go to Him outside the camp, bearing the disgrace He bore.
By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving
thanks to
his name.
Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise, the fruit of lips that
confess His name.
Make you perfect in every good work to do
his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in
his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever.
Amen.
equip you with every good thing to do
His will. And may He
accomplish in us what is pleasing in
His sight through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory
forever and ever.
Amen.
A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
He is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
The brother in humble circumstances should
exult in
his high position.
But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away.
But the one who is rich should
exult in
his low position, because he will pass away like a flower of the field.
For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man
fade away in
his ways.
For the sun rises with
scorching heat and
withers the plant; its flower falls and its beauty is lost. So too, the rich man will
fade away in the midst of
his pursuits.
Of
his own will
begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of
his creatures.
He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we would be a kind of firstfruits of His creation.
For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a
doer, he is like unto a man beholding
his natural face in a glass:
For
anyone who hears the word but does not carry it out is like a man who looks at
his face in a mirror,
For he beholdeth himself, and goeth
his way, and
straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
and after observing himself goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.
But
whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a
forgetful hearer, but a
doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in
his deed.
But the one who looks intently into the perfect law of freedom, and continues to do so—not being a
forgetful hearer, but an effective
doer—he will be blessed in what he does.
If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.
If
anyone considers himself religious and yet does not
bridle his tongue, he deceives
his heart and
his religion is worthless.
And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what
doth it profit?
If one of you tells him, “Go in peace; stay warm and well fed,” but does not provide for his physical needs, what good is that?
Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
Was not our father Abraham justified by what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?
Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
You see that his faith was working with his actions, and his faith was perfected by what he did.
Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
As you can see, a man is justified by his deeds and not by faith alone.
For in many things we
offend all. If any man
offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to
bridle the whole body.
We all
stumble in many ways. If
anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to control
his whole body.
And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of
hell.
The tongue also is a fire, a world of wickedness among the parts of the body. It pollutes the whole person, sets the course of
his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by
hell.
Who is a wise man and
endued with knowledge among you? let him
shew out of a good conversation
his works with
meekness of wisdom.
Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by
his good conduct, by deeds done in the
humility that comes from wisdom.
Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of
his brother, and judgeth
his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a
doer of the law, but a judge.
Brothers, do not
slander one another.
Anyone who speaks against
his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it. And if you judge the law, you are not a
practitioner of the law, but a judge of it.
Let him know, that he which converteth the
sinner from the error of
his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.
consider this:
Whoever turns a
sinner from the error of
his way will save
his soul from death and cover over a multitude of sins.
according to the
foreknowledge of God the Father and
sanctified by the Spirit for obedience to Jesus Christ and
sprinkling by
His blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to
his abundant mercy hath
begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should
shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into
his marvellous light:
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, to
proclaim the virtues of Him who called you out of darkness into
His marvelous light.
For even
hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow
his steps:
For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in His footsteps:
