But when Peter was come to Antioch, I
withstood him to the face, because he was to be
blamed.
When
Cephas came to Antioch,
however, I opposed him to his face, because he stood to be condemned.
But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a
Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?
When I saw that they were not walking in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to
Cephas in front of them all, “If you, who are a
Jew, live like a
Gentile and not like a
Jew,
how can you
compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?”
And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.
The law, however, is not based on faith; on the contrary, “The man who does these things will live by them.”
A
mediator is unnecessary,
however, for only one party; but God is one.
Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods.
Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods.
But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God,
how turn ye again to the weak and
beggarly elements,
whereunto ye desire again to be in
bondage?
But now that you know God, or rather are known by God,
how is it that you are turning back to those weak and worthless principles? Do you wish to be
enslaved by them all over again?
Ye know
how through
infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first.
You know that it was because of an illness that I first preached the gospel to you.
I desire to be present with you now, and to change my voice; for I stand in doubt of you.
how I wish I could be with you now and change my tone, because I am
perplexed about you.
But as then he that was born after the flesh
persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.
At that time,
however, the son born by the flesh
persecuted the son born by the Spirit. It is the same now.
Ye see how large a letter I have written unto you with mine own hand.
See what large letters I am using to write to you with my own hand!
How that by revelation he made known unto me the
mystery; (as I wrote
afore in few words,
that is, the
mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly.
Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk, not as unwise but as wise,
But that ye also may know my affairs, and
how I do,
Tychicus, a beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, shall make known to you all things:
Tychicus, the beloved brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will tell you everything, so that you also may know about me and what I am doing.
For God is my record,
how greatly I long after you all in the
bowels of Jesus Christ.
God is my witness how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.
But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel.
The former,
however,
preach Christ out of
selfish ambition, not
sincerely, supposing that they can add to the distress of my chains.
But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send
Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state.
Now I hope in the Lord Jesus to send
Timothy to you soon, that I also may be
cheered when I learn
how you are doing.
Him therefore I hope to send presently, so soon as I shall see how it will go with me.
So I hope to send him as soon as I see what happens with me.
Therefore, my brethren
dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, my
dearly beloved.
Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, that is how you must stand firm in the Lord, my beloved.
I know both
how to be
abased, and I know
how to abound: every where and in all things I am
instructed both to be full and to be
hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.
I know
how to live
humbly, and I know
how to abound. I am accustomed to any and every situation—to being filled and being
hungry, to having
plenty and having need.
For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at
Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh;
For I want you to know
how much I am struggling for you and for those at
Laodicea, and for all who have not met me face to face,
Let your speech be
alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know
how ye ought to answer every man.
Let your speech always be
gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know
how to answer
everyone.
For they themselves
shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and
how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;
For they themselves report what kind of
welcome you gave us, and
how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God
So being
affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were
dear unto us.
We cared so deeply that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God, but our own lives as well. That is how beloved you have become to us.
Ye are witnesses, and God also,
how holily and justly and unblameably we
behaved ourselves among you that believe:
You are witnesses, and so is God, of
how holy, righteous, and
blameless our conduct was among you who believed.
As ye know
how we
exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father
doth his children,
For you know that we treated each of you as a father treats his own children—
Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins
alway: for the wrath is come upon them to the
uttermost.
hindering us from telling the Gentiles
how they may be saved. As a result, they continue to
heap up their sins to full capacity; the utmost wrath has come upon them.
For what
thanks can we render to God again for you, for all the joy
wherewith we joy for your sakes before our God;
How can we adequately
thank God for you in return for our great joy over you in His presence?
Furthermore then we
beseech you, brethren, and
exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us
how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more.
Finally, brothers, we ask and
encourage you in the Lord Jesus to live in a way that is pleasing to God, just as you have received from us. This is
how you already live, so you should do so all the more.
That every one of you should know
how to possess his vessel in
sanctification and honour;
each of you must know
how to control his own body in
holiness and honor,
For
yourselves know
how ye ought to follow us: for we
behaved not ourselves disorderly among you;
For you
yourselves know
how you ought to
imitate us, because we were not undisciplined among you,
But for this very reason I was shown mercy, so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display His perfect
patience as an example to those who would believe in Him for eternal life.
Women,
however, will be saved through
childbearing, if they continue in faith, love, and
holiness, with self-control.
(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)
For if someone does not know
how to
manage his own household,
how can he care for the church of God?
But if I
tarry long, that thou mayest know
how thou oughtest to
behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the
pillar and ground of the truth.
in case I am delayed, so that you will know
how each one must conduct himself in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the
pillar and foundation of the truth.
Those who want to be rich,
however, fall into
temptation and become ensnared by many
foolish and
harmful desires that
plunge them into ruin and destruction.
The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.
May the Lord grant
Onesiphorus His mercy on that day. You know very well
how much he ministered to me in Ephesus.
You,
however, have observed my teaching, my conduct, my purpose, my faith, my
patience, my love, my
perseverance,
Tychicus,
however, I have sent to Ephesus.
Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?
no longer as a slave, but better than a slave, as a beloved brother. He is especially beloved to me, but even more so to you, both in person and in the Lord.
I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it:
albeit I do not say to thee
how thou owest unto me even thine own self besides.
I, Paul, write this with my own hand. I will repay it—not to mention that you owe me your very self.
How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;
how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? This salvation was first
announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard Him,
For some, when they had heard, did
provoke:
howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses.
For who were the ones who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt?
Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils.
Consider
how great
Melchizedek was: Even the patriarch Abraham gave him a tenth of the
plunder.
But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by
how much also he is the
mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.
Now, however, Jesus has received a much more excellent ministry, just as the covenant He mediates is better and is founded on better promises.
How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God,
purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself
unblemished to God,
purify our consciences from works of death, so that we may serve the living God!
And let us consider one another to
provoke unto love and to good works:
And let us consider
how to
spur one another on to love and good deeds.
Of
how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath
trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant,
wherewith he was
sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done
despite unto the Spirit of grace?
How much more severely do you think one deserves to be punished who has
trampled on the Son of God,
profaned the blood of the covenant that
sanctified him, and
insulted the Spirit of grace?
These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them
afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and
confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
All these people died in faith, without having received the things they were promised.
However, they saw them and
welcomed them from
afar. And they acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.
Now no
chastening for the present seemeth to be
joyous, but
grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.
No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields a harvest of righteousness and peace to those who have been trained by it.
For ye know
how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of
repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.
For you know that afterward, when he wanted to
inherit the blessing, he was rejected. He could find no ground for
repentance, though he sought the blessing with tears.
See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven:
See to it that you do not refuse Him who speaks. For if the people did not escape when they refused Him who
warned them on earth,
how much less will we escape if we
reject Him who warns us from heaven?
Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
You see that his faith was working with his actions, and his faith was perfected by what he did.
Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
As you can see, a man is justified by his deeds and not by faith alone.
Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
In the same way, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it boasts of great things. Consider
how small a
spark sets a great forest
ablaze.
Go to now, ye rich men,
weep and
howl for your
miseries that shall come upon you.
Come now, you who are rich,
weep and
wail over the misery to come upon you.
Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the
husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long
patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.
Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer awaits the precious fruit of the soil—how patient he is for the fall and spring rains.
Behold, we count them happy which
endure. Ye have heard of the
patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very
pitiful, and of tender mercy.
See
how blessed we consider those who have
persevered. You have heard of Job’s
perseverance and have seen the outcome from the Lord. The Lord is full of
compassion and mercy.
For what glory is it, if, when ye be
buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.
How is it to your credit if you are beaten for doing wrong and you
endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you
endure it, this is
commendable before God.
For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:
For this is
how the holy women of the past adorned themselves. They put their hope in God and were
submissive to their husbands,
The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:
if all this is so, then the Lord knows
how to
rescue the godly from trials and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment.
Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that
antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
Children, it is the last hour; and just as you have heard that the
antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have appeared. This is
how we know it is the last hour.
But ye have an
unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
You,
however, have an
anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.
But
whoso hath this world’s good, and
seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his
bowels of
compassion from him,
how dwelleth the love of God in him?
If
anyone with earthly possessions sees his brother in need, but withholds his
compassion from him,
how can the love of God
abide in him?
We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us.
Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
We are from God.
Whoever knows God listens to us;
whoever is not from God does not
listen to us. That is
how we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of
deception.
In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only
begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
This is how God’s love was revealed among us: God sent His one and only Son into the world, so that we might live through Him.
If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a
liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen,
how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
If
anyone says, “I love God,” but hates his brother, he is a
liar. For
anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.
I will therefore put you in
remembrance, though ye once knew this,
how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not.
Although you are fully aware of this, I want to remind you that after Jesus had delivered His people out of the land of Egypt, He destroyed those who did not believe.
But these speak evil of those things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as
brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves.
How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts.
when they said to you, “In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow after their own ungodly desires.”
I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy
patience, and
how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars:
I know your deeds, your labor, and your
perseverance. I know that you cannot
tolerate those who are evil, and you have tested and exposed as liars those who falsely claim to be apostles.
Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and
repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy
candlestick out of his place, except thou
repent.
Therefore, keep in mind
how far you have fallen.
Repent and perform the deeds you did at first. But if you do not
repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.
Remember therefore
how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and
repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a
thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.
Remember, then, what you have received and heard. Keep it and
repent. If you do not
wake up, I will come like a
thief, and you will not know the hour when I will come upon you.
I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou
wert cold or hot.
I know your deeds; you are neither cold nor hot. How I wish you were one or the other!
And they
cried with a loud voice, saying,
How long, O Lord, holy and true,
dost thou not judge and
avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?
And they
cried out in a loud voice, “
How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You
avenge our blood and judge those who dwell upon the earth?”
How much she hath
glorified herself, and lived
deliciously, so much
torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.
As much as she has
glorified herself and lived in
luxury, give her the same measure of
torment and grief. In her heart she says, ‘I sit as queen; I am not a widow and will never see grief.’
As for the things that came to pass in his time, they were written in former times, concerning those that
sinned, and did wickedly against the Lord above all people and kingdoms, and
how they
grieved him exceedingly, so that the words of the Lord rose up against Israel.
Howbeit Josias did not turn back his
chariot from him, but undertook to fight with him, not regarding the words of the prophet Jeremy spoken by the mouth of the Lord:
And he said thus, O ye men,
how exceeding strong is wine! it causeth all men to
err that drink it:
O ye men, how should not the king be mightiest, when in such sort he is obeyed? And he held his tongue.
O ye men, how can it be but women should be strong, seeing they do thus?
Neither could they
shew their families, nor their stock,
how they were of Israel: the sons of Ladan, the son of
Ban, the sons of Necodan, six hundred fifty and two.
How long shall I
forbear them, into whom I have done so much good?
Then the angel said unto me, Go thy way, and tell my people what manner of things, and how great wonders of the Lord thy God, thou hast seen.
For I have seen
how thou sufferest them
sinning, and hast
spared wicked doers: and hast destroyed thy people, and hast preserved thine enemies, and hast not
signified it.
I do not remember
how this way may be left: Are they then of Babylon better than they of
Sion?
And he said unto me, If I should ask thee
how great dwellings are in the midst of the sea, or
how many springs are in the beginning of the deep, or
how many springs are above the
firmament, or which are the outgoings of
paradise:
How should thy vessel then be able to
comprehend the way of the Highest, and, the world being now outwardly corrupted to understand the corruption that is evident in my sight?
For the grain of evil seed hath been sown in the heart of Adam from the beginning, and
how much
ungodliness hath it brought up unto this time? and
how much shall it yet bring forth until the time of
threshing come?
Ponder now by
thyself,
how great fruit of wickedness the grain of evil seed hath brought forth.
And when the ears shall be cut down, which are without number, how great a floor shall they fill?
Then I answered and said, How, and when shall these things come to pass? wherefore are our years few and evil?
Did not the souls also of the righteous ask question of these things in their chambers, saying, How long shall I hope on this fashion? when cometh the fruit of the floor of our reward?
As for me, I am unwise:
how may I then speak of these things
whereof thou askest me?
Consider thou therefore also,
how that ye are less of
stature than those that were before you.
If the world now be made for our sakes, why do we not possess an inheritance with the world?
how long shall this
endure?
Who then could go into the sea to look upon it, and to rule it? if he went not through the narrow, how could he come into the broad?
If this city now were given unto a man for an inheritance, if he never shall pass the danger set before it, how shall he receive this inheritance?
O Lord, if thou suffer not thy servant, that we may pray before thee, and thou give us seed unto our heart, and culture to our understanding, that there may come fruit of it; how shall each man live that is corrupt, who beareth the place of a man?
And therefore be thou not curious
how the ungodly shall be punished, and when: but
enquire how the righteous shall be saved, whose the world is, and for whom the world is created.
