Behold, the people shall rise up as a great lion, and lift up himself as a young lion: he shall not lie down until he eat of the prey, and drink the blood of the slain.
Behold, the people rise
like a
lioness; they
rouse themselves
like a lion, not resting until they
devour their prey and drink the blood of the slain.”
As the valleys are they spread forth, as gardens by the river’s side, as the trees of lign
aloes which the LORD hath planted, and as
cedar trees beside the waters.
They spread out
like palm groves,
like gardens beside a stream,
like aloes the LORD has planted,
like cedars beside the waters.
God brought him forth out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an
unicorn: he shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their bones, and
pierce them through with his arrows.
God brought him out of Egypt with strength
like a wild ox, to
devour hostile nations and
crush their bones, to
pierce them with arrows.
He
couched, he lay down as a lion, and as a great lion: who shall
stir him up? Blessed is he that blesseth thee, and
cursed is he that curseth thee.
Which may go out before them, and which may go in before them, and which may lead them out, and which may bring them in; that the congregation of the LORD be not as sheep which have no
shepherd.
who will go out and come in before them, and who will lead them out and bring them in, so that the congregation of the LORD will not be
like sheep without a
shepherd.”
But if he thrust him of hatred, or
hurl at him by laying of wait, that he die;
And the
Amorites, which dwelt in that mountain, came out against you, and
chased you, as bees do, and destroyed you in
Seir, even unto Hormah.
Then the
Amorites who lived in the hills came out against you and
chased you
like a
swarm of bees. They routed you from
Seir all the way to Hormah.
Which also were accounted giants, as the Anakims; but the Moabites call them
Emims.
Like the Anakites, they were also regarded as
Rephaim, though the Moabites called them Emites.
And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?
And what nation is great enough to have righteous statutes and ordinances
like this entire law I set before you
today?
that you do not act corruptly and make an
idol for
yourselves of any form or shape, whether in the
likeness of a male or female,
The likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flieth in the air,
of any beast that is on the earth or bird that
flies in the air,
The likeness of any thing that creepeth on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth:
or of any creature that crawls on the ground or fish that is in the waters below.
Take
heed unto
yourselves, lest ye
forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he made with you, and make you a
graven image, or the
likeness of any thing, which the LORD thy God hath forbidden thee.
Be careful that you do not
forget the covenant of the LORD your God that He made with you; do not make an
idol for
yourselves in the form of anything He has forbidden you.
When thou shalt
beget children, and children’s children, and ye shall have remained long in the land, and shall corrupt
yourselves, and make a
graven image, or the
likeness of any thing, and shall do evil in the sight of the LORD thy God, to
provoke him to anger:
After you have children and grandchildren and you have been in the land a long time, if you then act corruptly and make an
idol of any form—doing evil in the sight of the LORD your God and
provoking Him to anger—
For ask now of the days that are past, which were before thee, since the day that God created man upon the earth, and ask from the one side of heaven unto the other, whether there hath been any such thing as this great thing is, or hath been heard like it?
Indeed, ask now from one end of the heavens to the other about the days that long preceded you, from the day that God created man on earth: Has anything as great as this ever happened or been reported?
Thou shalt not make thee any
graven image, or any
likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth:
You shall not make for
yourself an
idol in the form of anything in the heavens above, on the earth below, or in the waters beneath.
Neither shalt thou bring an
abomination into thine house, lest thou be a
cursed thing
like it: but thou shalt utterly
detest it, and thou shalt utterly
abhor it; for it is a
cursed thing.
And you must not bring any
detestable thing into your house, or you,
like it, will be set apart for destruction. You are to utterly
detest and
abhor it, because it is set apart for destruction.
As the nations which the LORD destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be
obedient unto the voice of the LORD your God.
Like the nations that the LORD has destroyed before you, so you will perish if you do not obey the LORD your God.
Likewise when the LORD sent you from Kadesh-barnea, saying, Go up and possess the land which I have given you; then ye rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God, and ye believed him not, nor
hearkened to his voice.
And when the LORD sent you out from Kadesh-barnea, He said, “Go up and possess the land that I have given you.” But you rebelled against the command of the LORD your God. You neither believed Him nor obeyed Him.
At that time the LORD said unto me,
Hew thee two tables of stone
like unto the first, and come up unto me into the mount, and make thee an ark of wood.
At that time the LORD said to me, “
Chisel out two stone tablets
like the originals, come up to Me on the mountain, and make an ark of wood.
And I made an ark of
shittim wood, and
hewed two tables of stone
like unto the first, and went up into the mount, having the two tables in mine hand.
So I made an ark of
acacia wood,
chiseled out two stone tablets
like the originals, and went up the mountain with the two tablets in my hands.
And I stayed in the mount, according to the first time, forty days and forty nights; and the LORD
hearkened unto me at that time also, and the LORD would not destroy thee.
I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights,
like the first time, and that time the LORD again
listened to me and agreed not to destroy you.
For the land,
whither thou goest in to possess it, is not as the land of Egypt, from whence ye came out, where thou sowedst thy seed, and wateredst it with thy foot, as a garden of herbs:
For the land that you are entering to possess is not
like the land of Egypt, from which you have come, where you
sowed your seed and
irrigated on foot,
like a vegetable garden.
Only ye shall not eat the blood; ye shall pour it upon the earth as water.
but you must not eat the blood; pour it on the ground like water.
Thou shalt not eat it; thou shalt pour it upon the earth as water.
You must not eat the blood; pour it on the ground like water.
Take
heed to
thyself that thou be not
snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou
enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do
likewise.
be careful not to be ensnared by their ways after they have been destroyed before you. Do not inquire about their gods, asking, “How do these nations serve their gods? I will do likewise.”
Then thou shalt take an aul, and thrust it through his ear unto the door, and he shall be thy servant for ever. And also unto thy
maidservant thou shalt do
likewise.
then take an
awl and
pierce it through his ear into the door, and he will become your servant for life. And treat your
maidservant the same way.
Only thou shalt not eat the blood thereof; thou shalt pour it upon the ground as water.
But you must not eat the blood; pour it on the ground like water.
When thou art come unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, and shalt possess it, and shalt dwell therein, and shalt say, I will set a king over me, like as all the nations that are about me;
When you enter the land that the LORD your God is giving you and have taken possession of it and settled in it, and you say, “Let us set a king over us like all the nations around us,”
Then he shall minister in the name of the LORD his God, as all his brethren the Levites do, which stand there before the LORD.
then he shall serve in the name of the LORD his God like all his fellow Levites who stand there before the LORD.
They shall have
like portions to eat, beside that which cometh of the sale of his
patrimony.
They shall eat equal portions, even though he has received money from the sale of his father’s estate.
The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren,
like unto me; unto him ye shall
hearken;
The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet
like me from among your brothers. You must
listen to him.
I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.
I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. I will put My words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him.
And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man is there that is fearful and
fainthearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren’s heart
faint as well as his heart.
Then the officers shall speak further to the army, saying, “Is any man afraid or
fainthearted? Let him return home, so that the hearts of his brothers will not
melt like his own.”
In
like manner shalt thou do with his
ass; and so shalt thou do with his
raiment; and with all lost things of thy brother’s, which he hath lost, and thou hast found, shalt thou do
likewise: thou mayest not hide
thyself.
And you shall do the same for his
donkey, his
cloak, or anything your brother has lost and you have found. You must not
ignore it.
But unto the
damsel thou shalt do nothing; there is in the
damsel no sin worthy of death: for as when a man riseth against his neighbour, and slayeth him, even so is this matter:
Do nothing to the young woman, because she has committed no sin worthy of death. This case is just
like one in which a man attacks his
neighbor and murders him.
He shall dwell with thee, even among you, in that place which he shall choose in one of thy gates, where it
liketh him best: thou shalt not
oppress him.
Let him live among you wherever he chooses, in the town of his pleasing. Do not
oppress him.
And if the man like not to take his brother’s wife, then let his brother’s wife go up to the gate unto the elders, and say, My husband’s brother refuseth to raise up unto his brother a name in Israel, he will not perform the duty of my husband’s brother.
But if the man does not want to marry his brother’s widow, she is to go to the elders at the city gate and say, “My husband’s brother refuses to preserve his brother’s name in Israel. He is not willing to perform the duty of a brother-in-law for me.”
Then the elders of his city shall call him, and speak unto him: and if he stand to it, and say, I like not to take her;
Then the elders of his city shall
summon him and speak with him. If he persists and says, “I do not want to marry her,”
and at
noon you will
grope about
like a blind man in the darkness. You will not
prosper in your ways. Day after day you will be
oppressed and
plundered, with no one to save you.
The LORD shall bring a nation against thee from far, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flieth; a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand;
The LORD will bring a nation from
afar, from the ends of the earth, to
swoop down upon you
like an eagle—a nation whose language you will not understand,
And that the whole land thereof is
brimstone, and salt, and burning, that it is not sown, nor beareth, nor any grass groweth therein,
like the overthrow of
Sodom, and
Gomorrah, Admah, and
Zeboim, which the LORD overthrew in his anger, and in his wrath:
All its soil will be a burning waste of sulfur and salt, unsown and unproductive, with no plant growing on it, just
like the destruction of
Sodom and
Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in His fierce anger.
My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall
distil as the
dew, as the small rain upon the tender
herb, and as the showers upon the grass:
Let my teaching fall
like rain and my speech settle
like dew,
like gentle rain on new grass,
like showers on tender plants.
For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges.
For their rock is not
like our Rock, even our enemies
concede.
His glory is
like the
firstling of his
bullock, and his horns are
like the horns of unicorns: with them he shall
push the people together to the ends of the earth: and they are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and they are the thousands of
Manasseh.
His majesty is
like a
firstborn bull, and his horns are
like those of a wild ox. With them he will
gore the nations, even to the ends of the earth. Such are the myriads of Ephraim, and such are the thousands of
Manasseh.”
And of
Gad he said, Blessed be he that enlargeth
Gad: he dwelleth as a lion, and teareth the arm with the crown of the head.
Concerning
Gad he said: “Blessed is he who enlarges the
domain of
Gad! He lies down
like a lion and tears off an arm or a head.
There is none
like unto the God of
Jeshurun, who rideth upon the heaven in thy help, and in his
excellency on the sky.
“There is none
like the God of
Jeshurun, who rides the heavens to your aid, and the clouds in His majesty.
Happy art thou, O Israel: who is
like unto thee, O people saved by the LORD, the shield of thy help, and who is the sword of thy
excellency! and thine enemies shall be found liars unto thee; and thou shalt
tread upon their high places.
Blessed are you, O Israel! Who is
like you, a people saved by the LORD? He is the shield that protects you, the sword in which you
boast. Your enemies will cower before you, and you shall
trample their high places.”
And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face,
Since that time, no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face—
And the men of
Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: for they
chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and
smote them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.
And the men of
Ai struck down about thirty-six of them,
chasing them from the gate as far as the
quarries and striking them down on the slopes. So the hearts of the people melted and became
like water.
That they feared greatly, because
Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than
Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.
So Adoni-zedek and his people were greatly
alarmed, because
Gibeon was a great city,
like one of the royal cities; it was larger than
Ai, and all its men were mighty.
And there was no day
like that before it or after it, that the LORD
hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel.
There has been no day
like it before or since, when the LORD
listened to the voice of a man, because the LORD fought for Israel.
Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which the LORD your God promised you; so shall the LORD bring upon you all evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.
But just as every good thing the LORD your God promised you has come to pass,
likewise the LORD will bring upon you the
calamity He has threatened, until He has destroyed you from this good land He has given you.
And Judah said unto
Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the
Canaanites; and I
likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So
Simeon went with him.
Then the men of Judah said to their brothers the Simeonites, “Come up with us to our
allotted territory, and let us fight against the
Canaanites. And we
likewise will go with you to your territory.” So the Simeonites went with them.
So let all thine enemies perish, O LORD: but let them that love him be as the sun when he goeth forth in his might. And the land had rest forty years.
So may all Your enemies perish, O LORD! But may those who love You
shine like the sun at its brightest.” And the land had rest for forty years.
For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude; for both they and their camels were without number: and they entered into the land to destroy it.
For the Midianites came with their
livestock and their tents
like a great
swarm of locusts. They and their camels were innumerable, and they entered the land to
ravage it.
So he brought down the people unto the water: and the LORD said unto
Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself;
likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink.
So
Gideon brought the people down to the water, and the LORD said to him, “Separate those who
lap the water with their tongues
like a dog from those who
kneel to drink.”
And the Midianites and the
Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley
like grasshoppers for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the sea side for multitude.
Now the Midianites,
Amalekites, and all the other people of the east had settled in the valley
like a
swarm of locusts, and their camels were as countless as the sand on the
seashore.
And he said unto them, Look on me, and do likewise: and, behold, when I come to the outside of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so shall ye do.
“Watch me and do as I do,”
Gideon said. “When I come to the outskirts of the camp, do exactly as I do.
And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them likewise: and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered him.
From there he went up to Penuel and asked the same from them, but the men of Penuel gave the same
response as the men of Succoth.
Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye
slew at
Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king.
Next,
Gideon asked Zebah and Zalmunna, “What kind of men did you kill at
Tabor?” “Men
like you,” they answered, “each one resembling the son of a king.”
And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, Behold, there come people down from the top of the mountains. And Zebul said unto him, Thou seest the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.
When Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, “Look, people are coming down from the mountains!” But Zebul replied, “The shadows of the mountains look like men to you.”
And all the people
likewise cut down every man his
bough, and followed
Abimelech, and put them to the hold, and set the hold on fire upon them; so that all the men of the tower of
Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.
So each man also cut his own branch and followed
Abimelech. Then they piled the branches against the inner chamber and set it on fire above them, killing
everyone in the tower of
Shechem, about a thousand men and women.
Then Israel sent messengers unto the king of
Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land: but the king of
Edom would not
hearken thereto. And in
like manner they sent unto the king of Moab: but he would not consent: and Israel abode in Kadesh.
Then Israel sent messengers to the king of
Edom, saying, ‘Please let us pass through your land,’ but the king of
Edom would not
listen. They also sent messengers to the king of Moab, but he would not consent. So Israel stayed in Kadesh.
Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, A man of God came unto me, and his countenance was like the countenance of an angel of God, very terrible: but I asked him not whence he was, neither told he me his name:
So the woman went and told her husband, “A man of God came to me. His appearance was
like the angel of God, exceedingly
awesome. I did not ask him where he came from, and he did not tell me his name.
And when he came unto Lehi, the Philistines
shouted against him: and the Spirit of the LORD came
mightily upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands.
When
Samson arrived in Lehi, the Philistines came out
shouting against him. And the Spirit of the LORD came
mightily upon him. The ropes on his arms became
like burnt flax, and the bonds broke loose from his hands.
Now there were men lying in wait,
abiding with her in the chamber. And she said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee,
Samson. And he
brake the withs, as a thread of
tow is broken when it toucheth the fire. So his strength was not known.
While the men were hidden in her room, she called out, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!” But he
snapped the bowstrings
like a
strand of yarn
seared by a flame. So the source of his strength remained unknown.
Delilah therefore took new ropes, and bound him
therewith, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee,
Samson. And there were liers in wait
abiding in the chamber. And he
brake them from off his arms
like a thread.
So
Delilah took new ropes,
tied him up with them, and called out, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!” But while the men were hidden in her room, he
snapped the ropes off his arms
like they were threads.
That he told her all his heart, and said unto her. There hath not come a
razor upon mine head; for I have been a
Nazarite unto God from my mother’s
womb: if I be
shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be
like any other man.
Samson told her all that was in his heart: “My hair has never been cut, because I have been a
Nazirite to God from my mother’s
womb. If I am
shaved, my strength will leave me, and I will become as weak as any other man.”
And the
Levite was content to dwell with the man; and the young man was unto him as one of his sons.
and agreed to stay with him, and the young man became
like a son to
Micah.
Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people that were therein, how they dwelt careless, after the manner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure; and there was no magistrate in the land, that might put them to shame in any thing; and they were far from the Zidonians, and had no business with any man.
So the five men departed and came to Laish, where they saw that the people were living securely,
like the Sidonians,
tranquil and
unsuspecting. There was nothing lacking in the land and no
oppressive ruler. And they were far away from the Sidonians and had no alliance with
anyone.
And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds.
And
everyone who saw it said, “Nothing
like this has been seen or done from the day the Israelites came out of the land of Egypt until this day. Think it over, take counsel, and speak up!”
Then she said, Let me find favour in thy sight, my lord; for that thou hast comforted me, and for that thou hast spoken friendly unto thine
handmaid, though I be not
like unto one of thine handmaidens.
“My lord,” she said, “may I continue to find favor in your eyes, for you have comforted and spoken kindly to your
maidservant, though I am not
like one of your servant girls.”
And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The LORD make the woman that is come into thine house
like Rachel and
like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou
worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in
Bethlehem:
“We are witnesses,” said the elders and all the people at the gate. “May the LORD make the woman entering your home
like Rachel and Leah, who together built up the house of Israel. May you be prosperous in Ephrathah and famous in
Bethlehem.
And let thy house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bare unto Judah, of the seed which the LORD shall give thee of this young woman.
And may your house become
like the house of
Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, because of the offspring the LORD will give you by this young woman.”
There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God.
There is no one holy like the LORD. Indeed, there is no one besides You! And there is no Rock like our God.
And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said,
Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing
heretofore.
the Philistines were afraid. “The gods have entered their camp!” they said. “
Woe to us, for nothing
like this has happened before.
Be strong, and
quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you:
quit yourselves like men, and fight.
Take courage and be men, O Philistines! Otherwise, you will serve the Hebrews just as they served you. Now be men and fight!”
And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.
“Look,” they said, “you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now
appoint a king to judge us
like all the other nations.”
That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.
Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to judge us, to go out before us, and to fight our battles.”
And Samuel said to all the people, See ye him whom the LORD hath chosen, that there is none
like him among all the people? And all the people
shouted, and said, God save the king.
Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see the one the LORD has chosen? There is no one
like him among all the people.” And all the people
shouted, “Long live the king!”
Likewise all the men of Israel which had
hid themselves in mount Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle.
When all the Israelites who had been hiding in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines were
fleeing, they also joined Saul and
Jonathan in the battle.
For rebellion is as the sin of
witchcraft, and
stubbornness is as iniquity and
idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.
For rebellion is
like the sin of
divination, and
arrogance is
like the wickedness of
idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He has rejected you as king.”
And the staff of his
spear was
like a
weaver’s beam; and his
spear’s head
weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him.
The shaft of his
spear was
like a
weaver’s beam, and its iron point
weighed six hundred shekels. In addition, his shield bearer went before him.
Your servant has killed lions and bears; this
uncircumcised Philistine will be
like one of them, for he has
defied the armies of the living God.”
And Saul said unto Michal, Why hast thou
deceived me so, and sent away mine enemy, that he is escaped? And Michal answered Saul, He said unto me, Let me go; why should I kill thee?
And Saul said to Michal, “Why did you
deceive me
like this? You sent my enemy away and he has escaped!” Michal replied, “He said to me, ‘Help me get away, or I will kill you!’”
And when it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they
prophesied likewise. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they
prophesied also.
When this was reported to Saul, he sent more messengers, but they began to
prophesy as well. So Saul tried again and sent messengers a third time, and even they began to
prophesy.
And he stript off his clothes also, and
prophesied before Samuel in
like manner, and lay down naked all that day and all that night. Wherefore they say, Is Saul also among the prophets?
Then Saul
stripped off his robes and also
prophesied before Samuel. And he
collapsed and lay naked all that day and night. That is why it is said, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”
And the priest said, The sword of
Goliath the
Philistine, whom thou slewest in the valley of Elah, behold, it is here
wrapped in a cloth behind the
ephod: if thou
wilt take that, take it: for there is no other save that here. And David said, There is none
like that; give it me.
The priest replied, “The sword of
Goliath the
Philistine, whom you killed in the Valley of Elah, is here; it is
wrapped in a cloth behind the
ephod. If you want, you may take it. For there is no other but this one.” And David said, “There is none
like it; give it to me.”
Now therefore, my lord, as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, seeing the LORD hath
withholden thee from coming to shed blood, and from
avenging thyself with thine own hand, now let thine enemies, and they that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal.
Now, my lord, as surely as the LORD lives and you
yourself live, the LORD has held you back from coming to
bloodshed and
avenging yourself with your own hand. May your enemies and those who seek
harm for my lord be
like Nabal.
Yet a man is risen to pursue thee, and to seek thy soul: but the soul of my lord shall be bound in the
bundle of life with the LORD thy God; and the souls of thine enemies, them shall he
sling out, as out of the middle of a
sling.
And should someone pursue you and seek your life, then the life of my lord will be bound securely by the LORD your God in the
bundle of the living. But He shall
fling away the lives of your enemies
like stones from a
sling.
And
Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house,
like the feast of a king; and Nabal’s heart was
merry within him, for he was very
drunken: wherefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light.
When
Abigail returned to Nabal, there he was in the house, holding a feast fit for a king, in high spirits and very
drunk. So she told him nothing until morning light.
But it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became as a stone.
In the morning when Nabal was
sober, his wife told him about these events, and his heart failed within him and he became
like a stone.
And David said to
Abner, Art not thou a
valiant man? and who is
like to thee in Israel? wherefore then hast thou not kept thy lord the king? for there came one of the people in to destroy the king thy lord.
So David said to
Abner, “You are a man, aren’t you? And who in Israel is your equal? Why then did you not protect your lord the king when one of the people came to destroy him?
Now therefore, let not my blood fall to the earth before the face of the LORD: for the king of Israel is come out to seek a
flea, as when one
doth hunt a
partridge in the mountains.
So do not let my blood fall to the ground far from the presence of the LORD. For the king of Israel has come out to look for a
flea,
like one who hunts a
partridge in the mountains.”
And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man cometh up; and he is covered with a
mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he
stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself.
“What does he look
like?” asked Saul. “An old man is coming up,” she replied. “And he is wearing a
robe.” So Saul knew that it was Samuel, and he bowed facedown in reverence.
And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise upon his sword, and died with him.
When his
armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his own sword and died with him.
Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that were with him:
Then David took hold of his own clothes and
tore them, and all the men who were with him did the same.
And David came to
Baal-perazim, and David
smote them there, and said, The LORD hath broken forth upon mine enemies before me, as the breach of waters. Therefore he called the name of that place
Baal-perazim.
So David went to
Baal-perazim, where he defeated the Philistines and said, “
Like a
bursting flood, the LORD has
burst out against my enemies before me.” So he called that place
Baal-perazim.
