forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they

might be accomplished, the LORD
stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a
proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,
In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, to
fulfill the word of the LORD spoken through Jeremiah, the LORD
stirred the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia to send a

Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah
might be fulfilled, the LORD
stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a
proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,
In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, to

stirred the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia to send a
proclamation throughout his kingdom and to put it in writing as follows:

mighty kings also over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all countries beyond the river; and
toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them.

and who has shown me favor before the king, his counselors, and all his powerful officials. And because the hand of the LORD my God was upon me, I took courage and gathered the leaders of Israel to return with me.
Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of
Ahava, that we
might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance.
And there by the
Ahava Canal I proclaimed a fast, so that we
might humble ourselves before our God and ask Him for a safe journey for us and our children, with all our possessions.

After him repaired
Nehemiah the son of Azbuk, the ruler of the half part of Beth-zur, unto the place over against the
sepulchres of David, and to the
pool that was made, and unto the house of the

Nehemiah son of Azbuk, ruler of a half-district of Beth-zur, made repairs up to a point opposite the tombs of David, as far as the artificial
pool and the House of the

Some also there were that said, We have
mortgaged our lands, vineyards, and houses, that we
might buy corn, because of the
dearth.
Others were saying, “We are
mortgaging our fields, our vineyards, and our homes to get grain during the famine.”
I likewise, and my brethren, and my servants,
might exact of them money and corn: I pray you, let us leave off this
usury.
I, as well as my brothers and my servants, have been
lending the people money and grain. Please, let us stop this
usury.
Therefore was he
hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that they
might have matter for an evil report, that they
might reproach me.
He had been
hired to
intimidate me so that I would sin by doing as he suggested, so they could give me a bad name in order to discredit me.
And my God put into mine heart to gather together the nobles, and the rulers, and the people, that they
might be reckoned by
genealogy. And I found a register of the
genealogy of them which came up at the first, and found written therein,
Then my God put it into my heart to
assemble the nobles, the officials, and the people to be
enrolled by
genealogy. I found the
genealogical register of those who had first returned, and I found the following written in it:
And thou
didst divide the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land; and their persecutors thou threwest into the deeps, as a stone into the
mighty waters.
You divided the sea before them, and they crossed through it on dry ground. You
hurled their pursuers into the depths like a stone into
raging waters.
So the children went in and possessed the land, and thou subduedst before them the inhabitants of the land, the
Canaanites, and gavest them into their hands, with their kings, and the people of the land, that they
might do with them as they would.
So their descendants went in and possessed the land; You subdued before them the
Canaanites dwelling in the land. You delivered into their hands the kings and peoples of the land, to do with them as they wished.
And testifiedst against them, that thou
mightest bring them again unto thy law: yet they dealt proudly, and
hearkened not unto thy commandments, but
sinned against thy judgments, (which if a man do, he shall live in them;) and withdrew the shoulder, and
hardened their neck, and would not hear.
You
admonished them to turn back to Your law, but they were
arrogant and disobeyed Your commandments. They
sinned against Your ordinances, by which a man will live if he practices them. They
stubbornly shrugged their shoulders; they
stiffened their necks and would not obey.
Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who keepest covenant and mercy, let not all the trouble seem little before thee, that hath come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all thy people, since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day.
So now, our God, the great and
mighty and
awesome God who keeps His
gracious covenant, do not view lightly all the
hardship that has come upon us, and upon our kings and leaders, our priests and prophets, our ancestors and all Your people, from the days of the kings of Assyria until
today.
And that we should bring the firstfruits of our
dough, and our offerings, and the fruit of all manner of trees, of wine and of oil, unto the priests, to the chambers of the house of our God; and the
tithes of our ground unto the Levites, that the same Levites
might have the
tithes in all the cities of our
tillage.
Moreover, we will bring to the priests at the storerooms of the house of our God the firstfruits of our
dough, of our grain offerings, of the fruit of all our trees, and of our new wine and oil. A tenth of our produce belongs to the Levites, so that they shall receive
tithes in all the towns where we labor.
And their brethren,

valor. Zabdiel son of Haggedolim was their
overseer.
And came even before the king’s gate: for none
might enter into the king’s gate clothed with
sackcloth.
But he went only as far as the king’s gate, because the law prohibited
anyone wearing
sackcloth from entering that gate.
And all the acts of his power and of his
might, and the declaration of the greatness of
Mordecai,
whereunto the king advanced him, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Media and Persia?
And all of
Mordecai’s powerful and magnificent accomplishments, together with the full account of the greatness to which the king had raised him, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Media and Persia?
And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and
smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
when suddenly a

collapsed on the young people and they are dead, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
But he saveth the poor from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty.
He saves the
needy from the sword in their mouth and from the

Redeem me from the hand of the
mighty?
He is wise in heart, and

God is wise in heart and
mighty in strength. Who has resisted Him and
prospered?
If I speak of strength, lo, he is strong: and if of judgment, who shall set me a time to
plead?
If it is a matter of strength, He is indeed
mighty! If it is a matter of justice, who can
summon Him?
Neither is there any
daysman betwixt us, that
might lay his hand upon us both.
Nor is there a
mediator between us, to lay his hand upon us both.
He leadeth princes away
spoiled, and overthroweth the
mighty.
He leads priests away
barefoot and overthrows the established.
He poureth contempt upon princes, and weakeneth the strength of the mighty.
He pours out contempt on nobles and disarms the mighty.
