rebel, you will
tear his yoke from your
neck.”

wept.

And the LORD said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:
The LORD also said to Moses, “I have seen this people, and they are indeed a stiff-necked people.
Unto a land flowing with milk and honey: for I will not go up in the midst of thee; for thou art a stiffnecked people: lest I
consume thee in the way.
Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey. But I will not go with you, because you are a stiff-necked people; otherwise, I might destroy you on the way.”
For the LORD had said unto Moses, Say unto the children of Israel, Ye are a stiffnecked people: I will come up into the midst of thee in a moment, and
consume thee: therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do unto thee.
For the LORD had said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites, ‘You are a stiff-
necked people. If I should go with you for a single moment, I would destroy you. Now take off your
jewelry, and I will decide what to do with you.’”
And he said, If now I have found grace in thy sight, O Lord, let my Lord, I pray thee, go among us; for it is a stiffnecked people; and
pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for thine inheritance.

necked people,
forgive our iniquity and sin, and take us as Your inheritance.”

firstling of an
ass thou shalt
redeem with a lamb: and if thou
redeem him not, then shalt thou break his
neck. All the
firstborn of thy sons thou shalt
redeem. And none shall appear before me empty.

So all who had willing hearts, both men and women, came and brought brooches and earrings, rings and
necklaces, and all kinds of gold
jewelry. And they all presented their gold as a wave offering to the LORD.
And he shall bring them unto the priest, who shall offer that which is for the sin offering first, and
wring off his head from his
neck, but shall not divide it
asunder:
He is to bring them to the priest, who shall first present the one for the sin offering. He is to twist its head at the front of its neck without severing it;
We have therefore brought an
oblation for the LORD, what every man hath
gotten, of jewels of gold, chains, and bracelets, rings, earrings, and tablets, to make an
atonement for our souls before the LORD.
So we have brought to the LORD an offering of the gold articles each man acquired—armlets, bracelets, rings, earrings, and
necklaces—to make
atonement for ourselves before the LORD.”
Understand therefore, that the LORD thy God giveth thee not this good land to possess it for thy righteousness; for thou art a stiffnecked people.

And the elders of that city shall bring down the
heifer unto a rough valley, which is neither eared nor sown, and shall strike off the
heifer’s
neck there in the valley:
bring the
heifer to a valley with running water that has not been
plowed or sown, and break its
neck there by the stream.
And all the elders of that city, that are next unto the slain man, shall wash their hands over the
heifer that is
beheaded in the valley:
Then all the elders of the city nearest the
victim shall wash their hands by the stream over the
heifer whose
neck has been broken,
Therefore shalt thou serve thine enemies which the LORD shall send against thee, in hunger, and in
thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of all things: and he shall put a yoke of iron upon thy
neck, until he have destroyed thee.
you will serve your enemies the LORD will send against you in famine,
thirst, nakedness, and
destitution. He will place an iron yoke on your
neck until He has destroyed you.
For I know thy rebellion, and thy stiff
neck: behold, while I am yet alive with you this day, ye have been
rebellious against the LORD; and how much more after my death?
For I know how
rebellious and stiff-
necked you are. If you are already rebelling against the LORD while I am still alive, how much more will you
rebel after my death!
And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.
When they had brought the kings to Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the army commanders who had accompanied him, “Come here and put your feet on the necks of these kings.” So the commanders came forward and put their feet on their necks.
Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man is, so is his strength. And
Gideon arose, and
slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that were on their camels’
necks.
Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, “Get up and kill us
yourself, for as the man is, so is his strength.” So
Gideon got up and killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and he took the
crescent ornaments from the
necks of their camels.
And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple
raiment that was on the kings of
Midian, and beside the chains that were about their camels’
necks.
The weight of the gold earrings he had requested was 1,700 shekels, in addition to the
crescent ornaments, the pendants, the purple garments of the kings of
Midian, and the chains from the
necks of their camels.
And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his
neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.
As soon as the ark of God was mentioned,
Eli fell backward from his chair by the city gate, and being old and heavy, he broke his
neck and died. And
Eli had judged Israel forty years.
Thou hast also given me the
necks of mine enemies, that I might destroy them that
hate me.
You have made my enemies retreat before me; I put an end to those who
hated me.
Notwithstanding they would not hear, but
hardened their
necks, like to the
neck of their fathers, that did not believe in the LORD their God.
But they would not
listen, and they
stiffened their
necks like their fathers, who did not believe the LORD their God.
Now be ye not stiffnecked, as your fathers were, but yield
yourselves unto the LORD, and enter into his sanctuary, which he hath
sanctified for ever: and serve the LORD your God, that the fierceness of his wrath may turn away from you.
Now do not
stiffen your
necks as your fathers did. Submit to the LORD and come to His sanctuary, which He has consecrated
forever. Serve the LORD your God, so that His fierce anger will turn away from you.
And next unto them the Tekoites repaired; but their nobles put not their necks to the work of their Lord.
Next to him, the Tekoites made repairs, but their nobles did not put their shoulders to the work under their supervisors.
But they and our fathers dealt proudly, and
hardened their
necks, and
hearkened not to thy commandments,
But they and our fathers became
arrogant and stiff-
necked and did not obey Your commandments.
And refused to obey, neither were mindful of thy wonders that thou
didst among them; but
hardened their
necks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their
bondage: but thou art a God ready to
pardon,
gracious and
merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and forsookest them not.
They refused to
listen and failed to remember the wonders You performed among them. They
stiffened their
necks and appointed a leader to return them to their
bondage in Egypt. But You are a
forgiving God,
gracious and
compassionate, slow to anger and rich in loving devotion, and You did not
forsake them.
And testifiedst against them, that thou mightest bring them again unto thy law: yet they dealt proudly, and
hearkened not unto thy commandments, but
sinned against thy judgments, (which if a man do, he shall live in them;) and withdrew the shoulder, and
hardened their
neck, and would not hear.
You
admonished them to turn back to Your law, but they were
arrogant and disobeyed Your commandments. They
sinned against Your ordinances, by which a man will live if he practices them. They
stubbornly shrugged their shoulders; they
stiffened their
necks and would not obey.
He runneth upon him, even on his
neck, upon the thick
bosses of his bucklers:
I was at ease, but he hath broken me
asunder: he hath also taken me by my
neck, and
shaken me to pieces, and set me up for his mark.
Hath thou given the horse strength? hast thou clothed his
neck with
thunder?
Do you give strength to the horse or
adorn his
neck with a
mane?
In his neck remaineth strength, and sorrow is turned into joy before him.
Strength resides in his neck, and dismay leaps before him.
Thou hast also given me the
necks of mine enemies; that I might destroy them that
hate me.
You have made my enemies retreat before me; I put an end to those who
hated me.
Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul.
Save me, O God, for the waters are up to my neck.
Therefore pride compasseth them about as a chain; violence covereth them as a garment.
Therefore pride is their
necklace; a garment of violence covers them.
Lift not up your horn on high: speak not with a stiff neck.
Do not lift up your horn against heaven or speak with an outstretched neck.’”
Whose feet they
hurt with
fetters: he was laid in iron:
For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.
For they are a
garland of grace on your head and a
pendant around your
neck.
Let not mercy and truth
forsake thee: bind them about thy
neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:
Never let loving devotion or faithfulness leave you; bind them around your
neck, write them on the
tablet of your heart.
So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck.
They will be life to your soul and
adornment to your
neck.
Bind them continually upon thine heart, and
tie them about thy
neck.
Bind them always upon your heart;
tie them around your
neck.
He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.
A man who remains stiff-
necked after much reproof will suddenly be
shattered beyond recovery.
Thy cheeks are comely with rows of jewels, thy neck with chains of gold.
Your cheeks are beautiful with ornaments, your neck with strings of jewels.
Thy
neck is like the tower of David builded for an armoury,
whereon there
hang a thousand bucklers, all shields of mighty men.
Your
neck is like the tower of David, built with rows of stones; on it
hang a thousand shields, all of them shields of warriors.
Thou hast
ravished my heart, my sister, my
spouse; thou hast
ravished my heart with one of thine eyes, with one chain of thy
neck.
You have captured my heart, my sister, my
bride; you have
stolen my heart with one
glance of your eyes, with one
jewel of your
neck.
Thy
neck is as a tower of ivory; thine eyes like the fishpools in
Heshbon, by the gate of Bath-rabbim: thy nose is as the tower of
Lebanon which looketh toward Damascus.
Your
neck is like a tower made of ivory; your eyes are like the pools of
Heshbon by the gate of Bath-rabbim; your nose is like the tower of
Lebanon, facing toward Damascus.
Moreover the LORD saith, Because the daughters of
Zion are
haughty, and walk with stretched forth
necks and
wanton eyes, walking and
mincing as they go, and making a
tinkling with their feet:
And he shall pass through Judah; he shall overflow and go over, he shall reach even to the
neck; and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O
Immanuel.
It will pour into Judah,
swirling and
sweeping over it, reaching up to the
neck; its spreading streams will cover your entire land, O
Immanuel!
And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy
neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the
anointing.
On that day the burden will be lifted from your shoulders, and the yoke from your neck. The yoke will be broken because your neck will be too large.
And his breath, as an overflowing stream, shall reach to the midst of the
neck, to
sift the nations with the
sieve of vanity: and there shall be a
bridle in the jaws of the people, causing them to
err.
His breath is like a
rushing torrent that rises to the
neck. He comes to
sift the nations in a
sieve of destruction; He bridles the jaws of the peoples to lead them
astray.
Because I knew that thou art
obstinate, and thy
neck is an iron
sinew, and thy
brow brass;
For I knew that you are
stubborn; your
neck is iron and your
forehead is bronze.
Shake off your dust! Rise up and sit on your throne, O Jerusalem. Remove the chains from your
neck, O
captive Daughter of
Zion.
He that killeth an ox is as if he
slew a man; he that sacrificeth a lamb, as if he cut off a dog’s
neck; he that offereth an
oblation, as if he offered
swine’s blood; he that burneth incense, as if he blessed an
idol.
Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations.
Whoever slaughters an ox is like one who slays a man;
whoever sacrifices a lamb is like one who breaks a dog’s
neck;
whoever presents a grain offering is like one who offers pig’s blood;
whoever offers
frankincense is like one who blesses an
idol. Indeed, they have chosen their own ways and delighted in their abominations.
Yet they
hearkened not unto me, nor inclined their ear, but
hardened their
neck: they did worse than their fathers.
Yet they would not
listen to Me or
incline their ear, but they
stiffened their
necks and did more evil than their fathers.
But they obeyed not, neither inclined their ear, but made their neck stiff, that they might not hear, nor receive instruction.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring upon this city and upon all her towns all the evil that I have pronounced against it, because they have
hardened their
necks, that they might not hear my words.
“This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘Behold, I am about to bring on this city and on all the villages around it every
disaster I have pronounced against them, because they have
stiffened their
necks so as not to
heed My words.’”
Thus saith the LORD to me; Make thee bonds and yokes, and put them upon thy neck,
This is what the LORD said to me: “Make for
yourself a yoke out of leather straps and put it on your
neck.
And it shall come to pass, that the nation and kingdom which will not serve the same
Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, and that will not put their
neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, that nation will I
punish, saith the LORD, with the sword, and with the famine, and with the
pestilence, until I have consumed them by his hand.
As for the nation or kingdom that does not serve
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and does not place its
neck under his yoke, I will
punish that nation by sword and famine and plague, declares the LORD, until I have destroyed it by his hand.
But the nations that bring their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, and serve him, those will I let remain still in their own land, saith the LORD; and they shall till it, and dwell therein.
But the nation that will put its
neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon and serve him, I will leave in its own land, to
cultivate it and reside in it, declares the LORD.”
I spake also to
Zedekiah king of Judah according to all these words, saying, Bring your
necks under the yoke of the king of Babylon, and serve him and his people, and live.
And to
Zedekiah king of Judah I spoke the same message: “Put your
necks under the yoke of the king of Babylon; serve him and his people, and live!
Then Hananiah the prophet took the yoke from off the prophet Jeremiah’s
neck, and
brake it.
Then the prophet Hananiah took the yoke off the neck of Jeremiah the prophet and broke it.
And Hananiah spake in the presence of all the people, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Even so will I break the yoke of
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the
neck of all nations within the space of two full years. And the prophet Jeremiah went his way.
And in the presence of all the people Hananiah proclaimed, “This is what the LORD says: ‘In this way, within two years I will break the yoke of
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon off the
neck of all the nations.’” At this, Jeremiah the prophet went on his way.
Then the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah the prophet, after that Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke from off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, saying,
But shortly after Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke off his neck, the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:
For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; I have put a yoke of iron upon the
neck of all these nations, that they may serve
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; and they shall serve him: and I have given him the beasts of the field also.
For this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘I have put a yoke of iron on the
neck of all these nations to make them serve
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and they will serve him. I have even given him control of the beasts of the field.’”
The LORD hath made thee priest in the
stead of Jehoiada the priest, that ye should be officers in the house of the LORD, for every man that is
mad, and maketh himself a prophet, that thou shouldest put him in prison, and in the stocks.
‘The LORD has appointed you priest in place of Jehoiada, to be the chief officer in the house of the LORD, responsible for any
madman who acts like a prophet—you must put him in stocks and
neck irons.
For it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD of hosts, that I will break his yoke from off thy
neck, and will
burst thy bonds, and strangers shall no more serve themselves of him:
On that day, declares the LORD of Hosts, I will break the yoke off their
necks and
tear off their bonds, and no longer will strangers
enslave them.
The yoke of my transgressions is bound by his hand: they are
wreathed, and come up upon my
neck: he hath made my strength to fall, the Lord hath delivered me into their hands, from whom I am not able to rise up.
My transgressions are bound into a yoke,
knit together by His hand; they are
draped over my
neck, and the Lord has broken my strength. He has delivered me into the hands of those I cannot
withstand.
Our necks are under persecution: we labour, and have no rest.
We are closely pursued; we are
weary and find no rest.
I decked thee also with ornaments, and I put bracelets upon thy hands, and a chain on thy neck.
I adorned you with
jewelry, and I put bracelets on your wrists and a chain around your
neck.
Whiles they see vanity unto thee, whiles they divine a lie unto thee, to bring thee upon the necks of them that are slain, of the wicked, whose day is come, when their iniquity shall have an end.
while they offer false visions for you and lying divinations about you— to be placed on the necks of the wicked who are slain, whose day has come, the time of their final punishment.
The king
cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. And the king spake, and said to the wise men of Babylon,
Whosoever shall read this writing, and
shew me the interpretation thereof, shall be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about his
neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.
The king called out for the enchanters, astrologers, and diviners to be brought in, and he said to these wise men of Babylon, “
Whoever reads this inscription and tells me its interpretation will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around his
neck, and he will be made the third highest ruler in the kingdom.”
And I have heard of thee, that thou canst make interpretations, and
dissolve doubts: now if thou canst read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation thereof, thou shalt be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about thy
neck, and shalt be the third ruler in the kingdom.
But I have heard about you, that you are able to give interpretations and
solve difficult problems. Therefore, if you can read this inscription and give me its interpretation, you will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around your
neck, and you will be made the third highest ruler in the kingdom.”
Then commanded
Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his
neck, and made a
proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.
Then
Belshazzar gave the command, and they clothed Daniel in purple, placed a gold chain around his
neck, and proclaimed him the third highest ruler in the kingdom.
And Ephraim is as an
heifer that is taught, and loveth to
tread out the corn; but I passed over upon her fair
neck: I will make Ephraim to
ride; Judah shall
plow, and Jacob shall break his clods.
Ephraim is a well-trained
heifer that loves to
thresh; but I will place a yoke on her fair
neck. I will
harness Ephraim, Judah will
plow, and Jacob will break the hard ground.
I drew them with cords of a man, with bands of love: and I was to them as they that take off the yoke on their jaws, and I laid meat unto them.
I led them with cords of kindness, with ropes of love; I lifted the yoke from their necks and bent down to feed them.
Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, against this family do I
devise an evil, from which ye shall not remove your
necks; neither shall ye go
haughtily: for this time is evil.
Therefore this is what the LORD says: “I am
planning against this nation a
disaster from which you cannot free your
necks. Then you will not walk so proudly, for it will be a time of
calamity.
For now will I break his yoke from off thee, and will
burst thy bonds in
sunder.
For I will now break their yoke from your
neck and
tear away your
shackles.”
Thou wentest forth for the salvation of thy people, even for salvation with thine
anointed; thou woundedst the head out of the house of the wicked, by discovering the foundation unto the
neck.
Selah.
You went forth for the salvation of Your people, to save Your
anointed. You
crushed the head of the house of the wicked and
stripped him from head to
toe.
Selah But
whoso shall
offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a
millstone were
hanged about his
neck, and that he were
drowned in the depth of the sea.
But if
anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to
stumble, it would be better for him to have a large
millstone hung around his
neck and to be
drowned in the depths of the sea.
And
whosoever shall
offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a
millstone were
hanged about his
neck, and he were cast into the sea.
But if
anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to
stumble, it would be better for him to have a large
millstone hung around his
neck and to be thrown into the sea.
And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had
compassion, and ran, and fell on his
neck, and
kissed him.
So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still in the distance, his father saw him and was filled with
compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him, and
kissed him.
It were better for him that a
millstone were
hanged about his
neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should
offend one of these little ones.
It would be better for him to have a
millstone hung around his
neck and to be thrown into the sea than to cause one of these little ones to
stumble.
Ye stiffnecked and
uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.
You stiff-
necked people with
uncircumcised hearts and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit, just as your fathers did.
Now therefore why
tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the
neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?
Now then, why do you test God by placing on the necks of the disciples a yoke that neither we nor our fathers have been able to bear?
They all
wept openly as they embraced Paul and
kissed him.
Who have for my life laid down their own
necks: unto whom not only I give
thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles.
who have risked their lives for me. Not only I but all the churches of the Gentiles are
grateful to them.
And after that king Nabuchodonosor had made him to
swear by the name of the Lord, he
forswore himself, and rebelled; and
hardening his
neck, his heart, he
transgressed the laws of the Lord God of Israel.
As, to be clothed in purple, to drink in gold, and to sleep upon gold, and a
chariot with bridles of gold, and an
headtire of fine linen, and a chain about his
neck:
Then
Anna ran forth, and fell upon the
neck of her son, and said unto him, Seeing I have seen thee, my son, from henceforth I am content to die. And they
wept both.
And the whiteness
pilled away from the corners of his eyes: and when he saw his son, he fell upon his
neck.
And she
smote twice upon his
neck with all her might, and she took away his head from him.
