And it came to pass in the fifth year of
Jehoiakim the son of
Josiah king of Judah, in the ninth month, that they proclaimed a fast before the LORD to all the people in Jerusalem, and to all the people that came from the cities of Judah unto Jerusalem.
Now in the ninth month of the fifth year of
Jehoiakim son of
Josiah king of Judah, a fast before the LORD was proclaimed to all the people of Jerusalem and all who had come there from the cities of Judah.
And they said unto him, Sit down
now, and read it in our ears. So
Baruch read it in their ears.
“Please sit down,” they said, “and read it in our hearing.” So
Baruch read it in their hearing.
Now it came to pass, when they had heard all the words, they were afraid both one and other, and said unto
Baruch, We will surely tell the king of all these words.
When they had heard all these words, they turned to one another in fear and said to
Baruch, “Surely we must report all these words to the king.”
And they asked
Baruch, saying, Tell us
now, How
didst thou write all these words at his mouth?
“Tell us
now,” they asked
Baruch, “how did you write all these words? Was it at Jeremiah’s
dictation?”
Now the king sat in the winterhouse in the ninth month: and there was a fire on the
hearth burning before him.
Since it was the ninth month, the king was sitting in his winter quarters with a fire burning before him.
And
Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah and
Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, Pray
now unto the LORD our God for us.
Yet King
Zedekiah sent Jehucal son of Shelemiah and
Zephaniah the priest, the son of Maaseiah, to Jeremiah the prophet with the message, “Please pray to the LORD our God for us!”
Now Jeremiah came in and went out among the people: for they had not put him into prison.
Now Jeremiah was free to come and go among the people, for they had not yet put him in prison.
Where are
now your prophets which
prophesied unto you, saying, The king of Babylon shall not come against you, nor against this land?
Where are your prophets who
prophesied to you, claiming, ‘The king of Babylon will not come against you or this land’?
Therefore hear
now, I pray thee, O my lord the king: let my
supplication, I pray thee, be accepted before thee; that thou cause me not to return to the house of
Jonathan the
scribe, lest I die there.
But
now please
listen, O my lord the king. May my petition come before you. Do not send me back to the house of
Jonathan the
scribe, or I will die there.”
Then Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashur the son of Malchiah, heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken unto all the people, saying,
Now Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jucal son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur son of Malchijah heard that Jeremiah had been telling all the people:
Now when Ebed-melech the
Ethiopian, one of the eunuchs which was in the king’s house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the
dungeon; the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin;
Now Ebed-melech the
Cushite, a court official in the royal palace, heard that Jeremiah had been put into the
cistern. While the king was sitting at the Gate of Benjamin,
And Ebed-melech the
Ethiopian said unto Jeremiah, Put
now these old cast clouts and
rotten rags under thine armholes under the cords. And Jeremiah did so.
Ebed-melech the
Cushite cried out to Jeremiah, “Put these worn-out rags and clothes under your arms to
pad the ropes.” Jeremiah did so,
But if the princes hear that I have talked with thee, and they come unto thee, and say unto thee, Declare unto us now what thou hast said unto the king, hide it not from us, and we will not put thee to death; also what the king said unto thee:
If the officials hear that I have spoken with you, and they come and demand of you, ‘Tell us what you said to the king and what he said to you; do not hide it from us, or we will kill you,’
Now Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon gave charge concerning Jeremiah to Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard, saying,
Now Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had given orders about Jeremiah through Nebuzaradan captain of the guard, saying,
Now the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah, while he was shut up in the court of the prison, saying,
And while Jeremiah had been confined in the
courtyard of the guard, the word of the LORD had come to him:
Now the LORD hath brought it, and done according as he hath said: because ye have
sinned against the LORD, and have not obeyed his voice, therefore this thing is come upon you.
and
now the LORD has fulfilled it; He has done just as He said. Because you people have
sinned against the LORD and have not obeyed His voice, this thing has happened to you.
And
now, behold, I loose thee this day from the chains which were upon thine hand. If it seem good unto thee to come with me into Babylon, come; and I will look well unto thee: but if it seem ill unto thee to come with me into Babylon,
forbear: behold, all the land is before thee:
whither it seemeth good and convenient for thee to go, thither go.
But
now, behold, I am freeing you
today from the chains that were on your wrists. If it pleases you to come with me to Babylon, then come, and I will take care of you. But if it seems wrong to you to come with me to Babylon, go no farther. Look, the whole land is before you. Wherever it seems good and right to you, go there.”
Now while he was not yet gone back, he said, Go back also to Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon hath made governor over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people: or go
wheresoever it seemeth convenient unto thee to go. So the captain of the guard gave him
victuals and a reward, and let him go.
But before Jeremiah turned to go, Nebuzaradan added, “Return to Gedaliah son of
Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has appointed over the cities of Judah, and stay with him among the people, or go
anywhere else that seems right.” Then the captain of the guard gave him a
ration and a gift and released him.
Now when all the captains of the forces which were in the fields, even they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam governor in the land, and had committed unto him men, and women, and children, and of the poor of the land, of them that were not carried away
captive to Babylon;
When all the commanders and men of the armies in the field heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah son of
Ahikam over the land and that he had put him in charge of the men, women, and children who were the poorest of the land and had not been exiled to Babylon,
Now it came to pass in the seventh month, that
Ishmael the son of Nethaniah the son of Elishama, of the seed royal, and the princes of the king, even ten men with him, came unto Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam to
Mizpah; and there they did eat bread together in
Mizpah.
In the seventh month,
Ishmael son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, who was a member of the royal family and one of the king’s chief officers, came with ten men to Gedaliah son of
Ahikam at
Mizpah, and they
ate a meal together there.
Now the pit wherein
Ishmael had cast all the dead bodies of the men, whom he had slain because of Gedaliah, was it which
Asa the king had made for fear of
Baasha king of Israel: and
Ishmael the son of Nethaniah filled it with them that were slain.
Now the
cistern into which
Ishmael had thrown all the bodies of the men he had struck down along with Gedaliah was a large one that King
Asa had made for fear of
Baasha king of Israel.
Ishmael son of Nethaniah filled it with the slain.
Now it came to pass, that when all the people which were with
Ishmael saw Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were with him, then they were
glad.
When all the people with
Ishmael saw Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the army with him, they
rejoiced,
Be not afraid of the king of Babylon, of whom ye are afraid; be not afraid of him, saith the LORD: for I am with you to save you, and to deliver you from his hand.
Do not be afraid of the king of Babylon, whom you now fear; do not be afraid of him, declares the LORD, for I am with you to save you and deliver you from him.
And
now therefore hear the word of the LORD, ye
remnant of Judah; Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; If ye wholly set your faces to enter into Egypt, and go to
sojourn there;
then hear the word of the LORD, O
remnant of Judah! This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you are determined to go to Egypt and reside there,
And now I have this day declared it to you; but ye have not obeyed the voice of the LORD your God, nor any thing for the which he hath sent me unto you.
For I have told you
today, but you have not obeyed the voice of the LORD your God in all He has sent me to tell you.
Now therefore know certainly that ye shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the
pestilence, in the place
whither ye desire to go and to
sojourn.
Now therefore, know for sure that by sword and famine and plague you will die in the place where you desire to go to reside.”
Therefore
now thus saith the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel; Wherefore commit ye this great evil against your souls, to cut off from you man and woman, child and
suckling, out of Judah, to leave you none to remain;
So
now, this is what the LORD God of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Why are you doing such great
harm to
yourselves by cutting off from Judah man and woman, child and infant, leaving
yourselves without a
remnant?
Thou
didst say,
Woe is me
now! for the LORD hath added grief to my sorrow; I
fainted in my
sighing, and I find no rest.
You have said, ‘
Woe is me because the LORD has added sorrow to my pain! I am worn out with
groaning and have found no rest.’”
Then the city was broken up, and all the men of war fled, and went forth out of the city by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, which was by the king’s garden; (now the Chaldeans were by the city round about:) and they went by the way of the plain.
Then the city was breached; and though the Chaldeans had surrounded the city, all the men of war fled the city by night by way of the gate between the two walls near the king’s garden. They headed toward the Arabah,
Now in the fifth month, in the tenth day of the month, which was the
nineteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, came Nebuzar-adan, captain of the guard, which served the king of Babylon, into Jerusalem,
On the tenth day of the fifth month, in the
nineteenth year of
Nebuchadnezzar’s reign over Babylon, Nebuzaradan captain of the guard, a servant of the king of Babylon, entered Jerusalem.
Jerusalem hath
grievously sinned; therefore she is removed: all that honoured her
despise her, because they have seen her nakedness:
yea, she sigheth, and turneth backward.
Jerusalem has
sinned greatly; therefore she has become an object of
scorn. All who honored her
now despise her, for they have seen her nakedness; she herself groans and turns away.
The precious sons of
Zion, comparable to fine gold, how are they esteemed as
earthen pitchers, the work of the hands of the
potter!
How the precious sons of
Zion, once worth their weight in pure gold, are
now esteemed as jars of clay, the work of a
potter’s hands!
Their
visage is blacker than a coal; they are not known in the streets: their skin cleaveth to their bones; it is
withered, it is become like a stick.
But
now their appearance is blacker than
soot; they are not recognized in the streets. Their skin has
shriveled on their bones; it has become as dry as a stick.
Now it came to pass in the
thirtieth year, in the fourth month, in the fifth day of the month, as I was among the
captives by the river of
Chebar, that the heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God.
In the
thirtieth year, on the fifth day of the fourth month, while I was among the exiles by the River Kebar, the heavens opened and I saw visions of God.
Now as I
beheld the living creatures, behold one wheel upon the earth by the living creatures, with his four faces.
When I looked at the living creatures, I saw a wheel on the ground beside each creature with its four faces.
And he said unto me, Son of man, go, get thee unto the house of Israel, and speak with my words unto them.
Then He said to me, “Son of man, go now to the house of Israel and speak My words to them.
Again, When a righteous man
doth turn from his righteousness, and commit iniquity, and I lay a stumblingblock before him, he shall die: because thou hast not given him
warning, he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he hath done shall not be remembered; but his blood will I require at thine hand.
Now if a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and I put a
stumbling block before him, he will die. If you did not
warn him, he will die in his sin, and the righteous acts he did will not be remembered. And I will hold you responsible for his blood.
Thou also, son of man, take thee a
tile, and lay it before thee, and
pourtray upon it the city, even Jerusalem:
“Now you, son of man, take a brick, place it before you, and draw on it the city of Jerusalem.
And, behold, I will lay bands upon thee, and thou shalt not turn thee from one side to another, till thou hast ended the days of thy siege.
Now behold, I will
tie you up with ropes so you cannot turn from side to side until you have finished the days of your siege.
Then said I,
Ah Lord GOD! behold, my soul hath not been
polluted: for from my youth up even till
now have I not eaten of that which dieth of itself, or is
torn in pieces; neither came there
abominable flesh into my mouth.
“
Ah, Lord GOD,” I said, “I have never
defiled myself. From my youth until
now I have not eaten anything found dead or
mauled by wild beasts. No unclean meat has ever entered my mouth.”
Now is the end come upon thee, and I will send mine anger upon thee, and will judge thee according to thy ways, and will
recompense upon thee all thine abominations.
The end is
now upon you, and I will
unleash My anger against you. I will judge you according to your ways and repay you for all your abominations.
Now will I shortly pour out my
fury upon thee, and
accomplish mine anger upon thee: and I will judge thee according to thy ways, and will
recompense thee for all thine abominations.
Very soon I will pour out My wrath upon you and
vent My anger against you; I will judge you according to your ways and repay you for all your abominations.
Then said he unto me, Son of man, lift up thine eyes now the way toward the north. So I lifted up mine eyes the way toward the north, and behold northward at the gate of the altar this image of jealousy in the entry.
“Son of man,” He said to me, “
now lift up your eyes to the north.” So I lifted up my eyes to the north, and in the entrance north of the Altar Gate I saw this
idol of jealousy.
Then said he unto me, Son of man,
dig now in the wall: and when I had
digged in the wall, behold a door.
“Son of man,” He told me, “
dig through the wall.” So I
dug through the wall and discovered a
doorway.
Slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women: but come not near any man upon whom is the mark; and begin at my sanctuary. Then they began at the ancient men which were before the house.
Slaughter the old men, the young men and maidens, the women and children; but do not go near
anyone who has the mark.
Now begin at My sanctuary.” So they began with the elders who were before the temple.
Now the cherubims stood on the right side of the house, when the man went in; and the cloud filled the inner court.
Now when the man went in, the
cherubim were standing on the south side of the temple, and a cloud filled the inner court.
And it came to pass, when I
prophesied, that Pelatiah the son of Benaiah died. Then fell I down upon my face, and
cried with a loud voice, and said,
Ah Lord GOD!
wilt thou make a full end of the
remnant of Israel?
Now as I was
prophesying, Pelatiah son of Benaiah died. Then I fell facedown and
cried out in a loud voice, “Oh, Lord GOD, will You bring the
remnant of Israel to a complete end?”
Son of man, behold, they of the house of Israel say, The vision that he
seeth is for many days to come, and he prophesieth of the times that are far off.
“Son of man, take note that the house of Israel is saying, ‘The vision that he sees is for many years from now; he prophesies about the distant future.’
Son of man,
prophesy against the prophets of Israel that
prophesy, and say thou unto them that
prophesy out of their own hearts, Hear ye the word of the LORD;
“Son of man,
prophesy against the prophets of Israel who are
now prophesying. Tell those who
prophesy out of their own imagination: Hear the word of the LORD!
Likewise, thou son of man, set thy face against the daughters of thy people, which
prophesy out of their own heart; and
prophesy thou against them,
Now, O son of man, set your face against the daughters of your people who
prophesy out of their own imagination.
Prophesy against them
Now when I passed by thee, and looked upon thee, behold, thy time was the time of love; and I spread my
skirt over thee, and covered thy nakedness:
yea, I
sware unto thee, and entered into a covenant with thee, saith the Lord GOD, and thou becamest mine.
Then I passed by and saw you, and you were indeed old enough for love. So I spread My
cloak over you and covered your nakedness. I
pledged Myself to you, entered into a covenant with you, and you became Mine, declares the Lord GOD.
Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister
Sodom, pride,
fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she
strengthen the hand of the poor and
needy.
Now this was the iniquity of your sister
Sodom: She and her daughters were
arrogant, overfed, and
complacent; they did not help the poor and
needy.
Thou also, which hast judged thy sisters, bear thine own shame for thy sins that thou hast committed more
abominable than they: they are more righteous than thou:
yea, be thou confounded also, and bear thy shame, in that thou hast justified thy sisters.
So
now you must bear your disgrace, since you have brought
justification for your sisters. For they appear more righteous than you, because your sins were more
vile than theirs. So you too must bear your shame and disgrace, since you have made your sisters appear righteous.
Before thy wickedness was discovered, as at the time of thy reproach of the daughters of Syria, and all that are round about her, the daughters of the Philistines, which
despise thee round about.
before your wickedness was uncovered? Even so, you are
now scorned by the daughters of
Edom and all those around her, and by the daughters of the Philistines—all those around you who
despise you.
And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
Now the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
Say
now to the
rebellious house, Know ye not what these things mean? tell them, Behold, the king of Babylon is come to Jerusalem, and hath taken the king thereof, and the princes thereof, and led them with him to Babylon;
“
Now say to this
rebellious house: ‘Do you not know what these things mean?’ Tell them, ‘Behold, the king of Babylon came to Jerusalem, carried off its king and officials, and brought them back with him to Babylon.
But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right,
Now suppose a man is righteous and does what is just and right:
If he
beget a son that is a
robber, a
shedder of blood, and that doeth the like to any one of these things,
Now suppose that man has a violent son, who sheds blood or does any of these things,
Now, lo, if he
beget a son, that
seeth all his father’s sins which he hath done, and considereth, and doeth not such like,
Now suppose this son has a son who sees all the sins his father has committed, considers them, and does not do likewise:
Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, O house of Israel; Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal?
Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear now, O house of Israel: Is it My way that is unjust? Is it not your ways that are unjust?
Now when she saw that she had waited, and her hope was lost, then she took another of her whelps, and made him a young lion.
When she saw that she had waited in vain, that her hope was lost, she took another of her cubs and made him a young lion.
And
now she is planted in the wilderness, in a dry and
thirsty ground.
Now it is planted in the wilderness, in a dry and
thirsty land.
Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
Now the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
Also, thou son of man,
appoint thee two ways, that the sword of the king of Babylon may come: both
twain shall come forth out of one land: and choose thou a place, choose it at the head of the way to the city.
“
Now you, son of man, mark out two roads for the sword of the king of Babylon to take, both starting from the same land. And make a
signpost where the road branches off to each city.
And thou, son of man,
prophesy and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD concerning the
Ammonites, and concerning their reproach; even say thou, The sword, the sword is drawn: for the slaughter it is
furbished, to
consume because of the
glittering:
Now prophesy, son of man, and declare that this is what the Lord GOD says concerning the
Ammonites and their contempt: ‘A sword! A sword is drawn for slaughter, polished to
consume, to
flash like
lightning—
Now, thou son of man,
wilt thou judge,
wilt thou judge the
bloody city?
yea, thou shalt
shew her all her abominations.
“As for you, son of man, will you judge her? Will you pass judgment on the city of
bloodshed? Then
confront her with all her abominations
Behold, therefore I have
smitten mine hand at thy
dishonest gain which thou hast made, and at thy blood which hath been in the midst of thee.
Now look, I strike My hands together against your unjust gain and against the blood you have shed in your midst.
Then said I unto her that was old in
adulteries, Will they
now commit whoredoms with her, and she with them?
Then I said of her who had grown old in
adulteries: ‘
Now let them use her as a
prostitute, for that is all she is!’
And utter a parable unto the
rebellious house, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Set on a pot, set it on, and also pour water into it:
Now speak a parable to this
rebellious house and tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Put the pot on the fire; put it on and pour in the water.
Wherefore thus saith the Lord GOD;
Woe to the
bloody city, to the pot whose
scum is therein, and whose
scum is not gone out of it! bring it out piece by piece; let no lot fall up on it.
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘
Woe to the city of
bloodshed, to the pot
now rusted, whose
rust will not come off! Empty it piece by piece; cast no lots for its contents.
Son of man, because that Tyrus hath said against Jerusalem,
Aha, she is broken that was the gates of the people: she is turned unto me: I shall be
replenished,
now she is laid waste:
“Son of man, because Tyre has said of Jerusalem, ‘
Aha! The gate to the nations is broken; it has
swung open to me;
now that she lies in ruins I will be filled,’
Now shall the isles
tremble in the day of thy fall;
yea, the isles that are in the sea shall be troubled at thy departure.
Now the coastlands
tremble on the day of your
downfall; the islands in the sea are dismayed by your
demise.”’
“
Now you, son of man, take up a
lament for Tyre.
In the time when thou shalt be broken by the seas in the depths of the waters thy
merchandise and all thy company in the midst of thee shall fall.
Now you are
shattered by the seas in the depths of the waters; your
merchandise and the people among you have gone down with you.
Therefore, O thou son of man, speak unto the house of Israel; Thus ye speak, saying, If our transgressions and our sins be upon us, and we pine away in them, how should we then live?
Now as for you, son of man, tell the house of Israel that this is what they have said: ‘Our transgressions and our sins are heavy upon us, and we are wasting away because of them! How can we live?’
Now the hand of the LORD was upon me in the evening,
afore he that was escaped came; and had opened my mouth, until he came to me in the morning; and my mouth was opened, and I was no more
dumb.
Now the evening before the
fugitive arrived, the hand of the LORD was upon me, and He opened my mouth before the man came to me in the morning. So my mouth was opened and I was no longer
mute.
And they shall say, This land that was
desolate is become like the garden of
Eden; and the waste and
desolate and ruined cities are become
fenced, and are inhabited.
Then they will say, ‘This land that was
desolate has become like the garden of
Eden. The cities that were once ruined,
desolate, and destroyed are
now fortified and inhabited.’
After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.
After a long time you will be summoned. In the latter years you will enter a land that has recovered from war, whose people were gathered from many nations to the mountains of Israel, which had long been
desolate. They had been brought out from the nations, and all
now dwell securely.
To take a
spoil, and to take a prey; to turn thine hand upon the
desolate places that are
now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have
gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land.
in order to seize the
spoil and carry off the
plunder, to turn a hand against the
desolate places
now inhabited and against a people gathered from the nations, who have acquired
livestock and possessions and who live at the center of the land.’
And it shall come to pass at the same time when
Gog shall come against the land of Israel, saith the Lord GOD, that my
fury shall come up in my face.
Now on that day when
Gog comes against the land of Israel, declares the Lord GOD, My wrath will
flare up.
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD;
Now will I bring again the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel, and will be
jealous for my holy name;
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says:
Now I will restore Jacob from captivity and will have
compassion on the whole house of Israel, and I will be
jealous for My holy name.
And behold a wall on the outside of the house round about, and in the man’s hand a measuring reed of six cubits long by the
cubit and an hand breadth: so he measured the breadth of the building, one reed; and the height, one reed.
And I saw a wall surrounding the temple area.
Now the length of the measuring rod in the man’s hand was six long cubits (each measuring a
cubit and a
handbreadth), and he measured the wall to be one rod thick and one rod high.
Now the building that was before the separate place at the end toward the west was seventy cubits broad; and the wall of the building was five cubits thick round about, and the length thereof
ninety cubits.
Now the building that faced the temple
courtyard on the west was seventy cubits wide, and the wall of the building was five cubits thick all around, with a length of
ninety cubits.
Now the upper chambers were shorter: for the
galleries were higher than these, than the lower, and than the
middlemost of the building.
Now the upper chambers were smaller because the
galleries took more space from the chambers on the lower and middle floors of the building.
Now when he had made an end of measuring the inner house, he brought me forth toward the gate whose prospect is toward the east, and measured it round about.
Now when the man had finished measuring the interior of the temple area, he led me out by the gate that faced east, and he measured the area all around:
Now let them put away their
whoredom, and the carcases of their kings, far from me, and I will dwell in the midst of them for ever.
Now let them remove far from Me their
prostitution and the funeral offerings for their kings, and I will dwell among them
forever.
And a portion shall be for the prince on the one side and on the other side of the
oblation of the holy portion, and of the possession of the city, before the
oblation of the holy portion, and before the possession of the city, from the west side westward, and from the east side eastward: and the length shall be over against one of the portions, from the west border unto the east border.
Now the prince will have the area bordering each side of the area formed by the holy district and the property of the city, extending westward from the western side and eastward from the eastern side, running
lengthwise from the western boundary to the eastern boundary and parallel to one of the
tribal portions.
Now when the prince shall prepare a voluntary burnt offering or peace offerings
voluntarily unto the LORD, one shall then open him the gate that looketh toward the east, and he shall prepare his burnt offering and his peace offerings, as he did on the sabbath day: then he shall go forth; and after his going forth one shall shut the gate.
When the prince makes a
freewill offering to the LORD, whether a burnt offering or a peace offering, the gate facing east must be opened for him. He is to offer his burnt offering or peace offering just as he does on the Sabbath day. Then he shall go out, and the gate must be closed after he goes out.
Afterward he measured a thousand; and it was a river that I could not pass over: for the waters were risen, waters to
swim in, a river that could not be passed over.
Once again he measured off a thousand cubits, but
now it was a river that I could not cross, because the water had risen and was deep enough for
swimming—a river that could not be crossed on foot.
Now when I had returned, behold, at the bank of the river were very many trees on the one side and on the other.
When I arrived, I saw a great number of trees along both banks of the river.
Now these are the names of the tribes. From the north end to the coast of the way of Hethlon, as one goeth to
Hamath, Hazar-enan, the border of Damascus northward, to the coast of
Hamath; for these are his sides east and west; a portion for
Dan.
“
Now these are the names of the tribes: At the northern frontier,
Dan will have one portion bordering the road of Hethlon to Lebo-
hamath and running on to Hazar-enan on the border of Damascus with
Hamath to the north, and extending from the east side to the west side.
Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and
Azariah:
Among these young men were some from Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and
Azariah.
Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.
Now God had granted Daniel favor and
compassion from the chief official,
Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before
Nebuchadnezzar.
Now at the end of the time specified by the king, the chief official presented them to
Nebuchadnezzar.
I
thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me
now what we desired of thee: for thou hast
now made known unto us the king’s matter.
To You, O God of my fathers, I give
thanks and praise, because You have given me wisdom and power. And
now You have made known to me what we have requested, for You have made known to us the dream of the king.”
This is the dream; and we will tell the interpretation thereof before the king.
This was the dream; now we will tell the king its interpretation.
Now if ye be ready that at what time ye hear the sound of the
cornet,
flute,
harp,
sackbut,
psaltery, and
dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, ye fall down and worship the image which I have made; well: but if ye worship not, ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning
fiery furnace; and who is that God that shall deliver you out of my hands?
Now, if you are ready, as soon as you hear the sound of the horn,
flute,
zither,
lyre,
harp, pipes, and all kinds of music, you must fall down and worship the statue I have made. But if you refuse to worship, you will be thrown at once into the
blazing fiery furnace. Then what god will be able to deliver you from my hands?”
This dream I king
Nebuchadnezzar have seen.
Now thou, O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation thereof,
forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known unto me the interpretation: but thou art able; for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee.
This is the dream that I, King
Nebuchadnezzar, saw.
Now, Belteshazzar, tell me the interpretation, because none of the wise men of my kingdom can
interpret it for me. But you are able, because the spirit of the holy gods is in you.”
Now I
Nebuchadnezzar praise and
extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to
abase.
Now I,
Nebuchadnezzar, praise and
exalt and
glorify the King of heaven, for all His works are true and all His ways are just. And He is able to humble those who walk in pride.
Now the queen, by reason of the words of the king and his lords, came into the
banquet house: and the queen spake and said, O king, live for ever: let not thy thoughts trouble thee, nor let thy countenance be changed:
Hearing the outcry of the king and his nobles, the queen entered the
banquet hall. “O king, may you live
forever!” she said. “Do not let your thoughts
terrify you, or your face grow pale.
