And it came to pass, that in process of time, after the end of two years, his
bowels fell out by reason of his sickness: so he died of
sore diseases. And his
people made no burning for him, like the burning of his fathers.
This continued day after day until two full years had passed. Finally, his intestines came out because of his disease, and he died in severe pain. And his people did not make a fire in his honor as they had done for his fathers.
And the inhabitants of Jerusalem made
Ahaziah his youngest son king in his
stead: for the band of men that came with the Arabians to the camp had slain all the eldest. So
Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah reigned.
Then the
people of Jerusalem made
Ahaziah, the youngest son of Jehoram, king in his place, since the raiders who had come into the camp with the Arabs had killed all the older sons. So
Ahaziah son of Jehoram became king of Judah.
And a third part shall be at the king’s house; and a third part at the gate of the foundation: and all the people shall be in the courts of the house of the LORD.
a third shall be at the royal palace, and a third at the Foundation Gate, while all the others are in the courtyards of the house of the LORD.
But let none come into the house of the LORD, save the priests, and they that minister of the Levites; they shall go in, for they are holy: but all the people shall keep the watch of the LORD.
No one is to enter the house of the LORD except the priests and those Levites who serve; they may enter because they are consecrated, but all the people are to obey the requirement of the LORD.
And he set all the people, every man having his weapon in his hand, from the right side of the temple to the left side of the temple, along by the altar and the temple, by the king round about.
He stationed all the troops, with their weapons in hand, surrounding the king by the altar and the temple, from the south side to the north side of the temple.
Now when
Athaliah heard the noise of the
people running and praising the king, she came to the
people into the house of the LORD:
When
Athaliah heard the noise of the
people running and
cheering the king, she went out to them in the house of the LORD.
And she looked, and, behold, the king stood at his
pillar at the entering in, and the princes and the
trumpets by the king: and all the
people of the land
rejoiced, and sounded with
trumpets, also the singers with instruments of musick, and such as taught to sing praise. Then
Athaliah rent her clothes, and said, Treason, Treason.
And she looked out and saw the king standing by his
pillar at the entrance. The officers and trumpeters were beside the king, and all the
people of the land were
rejoicing and blowing
trumpets, while the singers with musical instruments were leading the praises. Then
Athaliah tore her clothes and
screamed, “Treason, treason!”
And Jehoiada made a covenant between him, and between all the people, and between the king, that they should be the LORD’S people.
Then Jehoiada made a covenant between himself and the king and the people that they would be the LORD’s people.
Then all the
people went to the house of
Baal, and
brake it down, and
brake his altars and his images in pieces, and
slew Mattan the priest of
Baal before the altars.
So all the
people went to the temple of
Baal and
tore it down. They
smashed the altars and idols to pieces and killed Mattan the priest of
Baal in front of the altars.
And he took the captains of hundreds, and the nobles, and the governors of the people, and all the people of the land, and brought down the king from the house of the LORD: and they came through the high gate into the king’s house, and set the king upon the throne of the kingdom.
He also took with him the commanders of hundreds, the nobles, the rulers of the
people, and all the
people of the land, and they brought the king down from the house of the LORD and entered the royal palace through the Upper Gate. They seated King
Joash on the royal throne,
And all the
people of the land
rejoiced: and the city was quiet, after that they had slain
Athaliah with the sword.
and all the
people of the land
rejoiced. And the city was quiet, because
Athaliah had been put to the sword.
And all the princes and all the
people rejoiced, and brought in, and cast into the chest, until they had made an end.
All the officers and all the
people rejoiced and brought their contributions, and they dropped them in the chest until it was full.
Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again unto the LORD; and they
testified against them: but they would not give ear.
Nevertheless, the LORD sent prophets to bring the
people back to Him and to
testify against them; but they would not
listen.
And the Spirit of God came upon
Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the
people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why
transgress ye the commandments of the LORD, that ye cannot
prosper? because ye have
forsaken the LORD, he hath also
forsaken you.
Then the Spirit of God came upon
Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest, who stood up before the
people and said to them, “This is what God says: ‘Why do you
transgress the commandments of the LORD so that you cannot
prosper? Because you have
forsaken the LORD, He has
forsaken you.’”
And it came to pass at the end of the year, that the host of Syria came up against him: and they came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the
people from among the
people, and sent all the
spoil of them unto the king of Damascus.
In the spring, the army of
Aram went to war against
Joash. They entered Judah and Jerusalem and destroyed all the leaders of the
people, and they sent all the
plunder to their king in Damascus.
Moreover
Amaziah gathered Judah together, and made them captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, according to the houses of their fathers, throughout all Judah and Benjamin: and he numbered them from twenty years old and above, and found them three hundred thousand choice men, able to go forth to war, that could handle
spear and shield.
Then
Amaziah gathered the
people of Judah and assigned them according to their families to commanders of thousands and of hundreds. And he numbered those twenty years of age or older throughout Judah and Benjamin and found 300,000 chosen men able to serve in the army, bearing the
spear and shield.
And
Amaziah strengthened himself, and led forth his
people, and went to the valley of salt, and
smote of the children of
Seir ten thousand.
Amaziah, however, summoned his strength and led his troops to the Valley of Salt, where he struck down 10,000 men of
Seir,
But the soldiers of the army which
Amaziah sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, fell upon the cities of Judah, from Samaria even unto Beth-horon, and
smote three thousand of them, and took much
spoil.
Meanwhile the troops that
Amaziah had dismissed from battle
raided the cities of Judah, from Samaria to Beth-horon. They struck down 3,000
people and carried off a great deal of
plunder.
Wherefore the anger of the LORD was
kindled against
Amaziah, and he sent unto him a prophet, which said unto him, Why hast thou sought after the gods of the
people, which could not deliver their own
people out of thine hand?
Therefore the anger of the LORD burned against
Amaziah, and He sent him a prophet, who said, “Why have you sought this
people’s gods, which could not deliver them from your hand?”
Then all the
people of Judah took Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in the room of his father
Amaziah.
All the
people of Judah took Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in place of his father
Amaziah.
And Uzziah the king was a
leper unto the day of his death, and dwelt in a several house, being a
leper; for he was cut off from the house of the LORD: and Jotham his son was over the king’s house, judging the
people of the land.
So King Uzziah was a
leper until the day of his death. He lived in
isolation,
leprous and cut off from the house of the LORD, while his son Jotham had charge of the royal palace to
govern the
people of the land.
So Uzziah
slept with his fathers, and they buried him with his fathers in the field of the burial which belonged to the kings; for they said, He is a
leper: and Jotham his son reigned in his
stead.
And Uzziah rested with his fathers and was buried near them in a field of burial that belonged to the kings; for the
people said, “He was a
leper.” And his son Jotham reigned in his place.
And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father Uzziah did:
howbeit he entered not into the temple of the LORD. And the
people did yet corruptly.
And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father Uzziah had done. In addition, he did not enter the temple of the LORD. But the
people still
behaved corruptly.
And
Hezekiah rejoiced, and all the
people, that God had prepared the
people: for the thing was done suddenly.
Then
Hezekiah and all the
people rejoiced at what God had prepared for the
people, because everything had been accomplished so quickly.
For they could not keep it at that time, because the priests had not
sanctified themselves sufficiently, neither had the
people gathered themselves together to Jerusalem.
since they had been unable to observe it at the regular time, because not enough priests had consecrated themselves and the people had not been gathered in Jerusalem.
So they established a decree to make
proclamation throughout all Israel, from Beer-
sheba even to
Dan, that they should come to keep the
passover unto the LORD God of Israel at Jerusalem: for they had not done it of a long time in such sort as it was written.
So they established a decree to
circulate a
proclamation throughout Israel, from
Beersheba to
Dan, that the
people should come to keep the
Passover of the LORD, the God of Israel, in Jerusalem. For they had not observed it as a nation as prescribed.
And the couriers traveled from city to city through the land of Ephraim and
Manasseh as far as
Zebulun; but the
people scorned and
mocked them.
Also in Judah the hand of God was to give them one heart to do the commandment of the king and of the princes, by the word of the LORD.
Moreover, the power of God was on the people in Judah to give them one heart to obey the command of the king and his officials according to the word of the LORD.
And there assembled at Jerusalem much
people to keep the feast of
unleavened bread in the second month, a very great congregation.
In the second month, a very great assembly gathered in Jerusalem to
celebrate the Feast of
Unleavened Bread.
Then the priests the Levites arose and blessed the people: and their voice was heard, and their prayer came up to his holy dwelling place, even unto heaven.
Then the priests and the Levites stood to
bless the
people, and God heard their voice, and their prayer came into His holy dwelling place in heaven.
Moreover he commanded the people that dwelt in Jerusalem to give the portion of the priests and the Levites, that they might be encouraged in the law of the LORD.
Moreover, he commanded the
people living in Jerusalem to make a contribution for the priests and Levites so that they could
devote themselves to the Law of the LORD.
And when
Hezekiah and the princes came and saw the heaps, they blessed the LORD, and his
people Israel.
When
Hezekiah and his officials came and viewed the heaps, they blessed the LORD and His
people Israel.
And
Azariah the chief priest of the house of
Zadok answered him, and said, Since the
people began to bring the offerings into the house of the LORD, we have had enough to eat, and have left
plenty: for the LORD hath blessed his
people; and that which is left is this great store.
and
Azariah, the chief priest of the household of
Zadok, answered him, “Since the
people began to bring their contributions into the house of the LORD, we have had enough to eat and there is
plenty left over, because the LORD has blessed His
people; this great abundance is what is left over.”
So there was gathered much
people together, who stopped all the fountains, and the
brook that ran through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come, and find much water?
Many
people assembled and stopped up all the springs and the stream that flowed through the land. “Why should the kings of Assyria come and find
plenty of water?” they said.
And he set captains of war over the
people, and gathered them together to him in the street of the gate of the city, and spake
comfortably to them, saying,
Hezekiah appointed military commanders over the
people and gathered the
people in the square of the city gate. Then he encouraged them, saying,
With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the LORD our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the
people rested themselves upon the words of
Hezekiah king of Judah.
With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles.” So the
people were strengthened by the words of
Hezekiah king of Judah.
After this did
Sennacherib king of Assyria send his servants to Jerusalem, (but he himself laid siege against
Lachish, and all his power with him,) unto
Hezekiah king of Judah, and unto all Judah that were at Jerusalem, saying,
Later, as
Sennacherib king of Assyria and all his forces besieged
Lachish, he sent his servants to Jerusalem with a message for King
Hezekiah of Judah and all the
people of Judah who were in Jerusalem:
Know ye not what I and my fathers have done unto all the people of other lands? were the gods of the nations of those lands any ways able to deliver their lands out of mine hand?
Do you not know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the lands? Have the gods of these nations ever been able to deliver their land from my hand?
Who was there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of mine hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of mine hand?
Who among all the gods of these nations that my fathers devoted to destruction has been able to deliver his people from my hand? How then can your God deliver you from my hand?
Now therefore let not
Hezekiah deceive you, nor
persuade you on this manner, neither yet believe him: for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his
people out of mine hand, and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your God deliver you out of mine hand?
So now, do not let
Hezekiah deceive you, and do not let him mislead you like this. Do not believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliver his
people from my hand or from the hand of my fathers. How much less will your God deliver you from my hand!”
He wrote also letters to rail on the LORD God of Israel, and to speak against him, saying, As the gods of the nations of other lands have not delivered their
people out of mine hand, so shall not the God of
Hezekiah deliver his
people out of mine hand.
He also wrote letters
mocking the LORD, the God of Israel, and saying against Him: “Just as the gods of the nations did not deliver their
people from my hand, so the God of
Hezekiah will not deliver His
people from my hand.”
Then they
cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ speech unto the
people of Jerusalem that were on the wall, to
affright them, and to trouble them; that they might take the city.
Then the Assyrians called out loudly in Hebrew to the
people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to
frighten and
terrify them in order to capture the city.
And they spake against the God of Jerusalem, as against the gods of the people of the earth, which were the work of the hands of man.
They spoke against the God of Jerusalem as they had spoken against the gods of the peoples of the earth—the work of human hands.
Thus the LORD saved
Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of
Sennacherib the king of Assyria, and from the hand of all other, and guided them on every side.
So the LORD saved
Hezekiah and the
people of Jerusalem from the hands of King
Sennacherib of Assyria and all the others, and He gave them rest on every side.
Notwithstanding
Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD came not upon them in the days of
Hezekiah.
Then
Hezekiah humbled the pride of his heart—he and the
people of Jerusalem—so that the wrath of the LORD did not come upon them during the days of
Hezekiah.
And
Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the chiefest of the
sepulchres of the sons of David: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honour at his death. And
Manasseh his son reigned in his
stead.
And
Hezekiah rested with his fathers and was buried in the upper tombs of David’s descendants. All Judah and the
people of Jerusalem paid him honor at his death. And his son
Manasseh reigned in his place.
So
Manasseh made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to
err, and to do worse than the heathen, whom the LORD had destroyed before the children of Israel.
So
Manasseh led the
people of Judah and Jerusalem
astray, so that they did greater evil than the nations that the LORD had destroyed before the Israelites.
And the LORD spake to
Manasseh, and to his
people: but they would not
hearken.
And the LORD spoke to
Manasseh and his
people, but they did not
listen.
Nevertheless the people did sacrifice still in the high places, yet unto the LORD their God only.
Nevertheless, the people still sacrificed at the high places, but only to the LORD their God.
But the
people of the land
slew all them that had
conspired against king Amon; and the
people of the land made
Josiah his son king in his
stead.
But the
people of the land killed all those who had
conspired against King Amon, and they made his son
Josiah king in his place.
And when they came to Hilkiah the high priest, they delivered the money that was brought into the house of God, which the Levites that kept the doors had gathered of the hand of
Manasseh and Ephraim, and of all the
remnant of Israel, and of all Judah and Benjamin; and they returned to Jerusalem.
So they went to Hilkiah the high priest and gave him the money that had been brought into the house of God, which the Levites at the doors had collected from the
people of
Manasseh and Ephraim, from all the
remnant of Israel, Judah, and Benjamin, and from the
people of Jerusalem.
Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah:
that this is what the LORD says: I am about to bring
calamity on this place and on its
people, according to all the curses written in the book that has been read in the presence of the king of Judah,
Because thine heart was tender, and thou
didst humble
thyself before God, when thou heardest his words against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst
thyself before me, and
didst rend thy clothes, and
weep before me; I have even heard thee also, saith the LORD.
because your heart was tender and you humbled
yourself before God when you heard His words against this place and against its
people, and because you have humbled
yourself before Me and you have
torn your clothes and
wept before Me, I have heard you,’ declares the LORD.
And the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the priests, and the Levites, and all the people, great and small: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in the house of the LORD.
And he went up to the house of the LORD with all the people of Judah and Jerusalem, as well as the priests and the Levites—all the people small and great—and in their hearing he read all the words of the Book of the Covenant that had been found in the house of the LORD.
And he caused all that were present in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand to it. And the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers.
Then he had
everyone in Jerusalem and Benjamin take a stand in agreement to it. So all the
people of Jerusalem carried out the covenant of God, the God of their fathers.
And said unto the Levites that taught all Israel, which were holy unto the LORD, Put the holy ark in the house which Solomon the son of David king of Israel did build; it shall not be a burden upon your shoulders: serve now the LORD your God, and his people Israel,
To the Levites who taught all Israel and were holy to the LORD,
Josiah said: “Put the holy ark in the temple built by Solomon son of David king of Israel. It is not to be carried around on your shoulders. Now serve the LORD your God and His
people Israel.
And stand in the holy place according to the divisions of the families of the fathers of your brethren the people, and after the division of the families of the Levites.
Moreover, stand in the Holy Place by the divisions of the families of your
kinsmen the lay
people, and by the divisions of the families of the Levites.
And
Josiah gave to the
people, of the flock, lambs and kids, all for the
passover offerings, for all that were present, to the number of thirty thousand, and three thousand bullocks: these were of the king’s substance.
From his own flocks and herds
Josiah contributed 30,000 lambs and goats
plus 3,000 bulls for the
Passover offerings for all the
people who were present.
And his princes gave willingly unto the
people, to the priests, and to the Levites: Hilkiah and
Zechariah and Jehiel, rulers of the house of God, gave unto the priests for the
passover offerings two thousand and six hundred small cattle, and three hundred oxen.
His officials also contributed willingly to the
people and priests and Levites. Hilkiah,
Zechariah, and Jehiel, the administrators of the house of God, gave the priests 2,600
Passover offerings and 300 bulls.
And they removed the burnt offerings, that they might give according to the divisions of the families of the people, to offer unto the LORD, as it is written in the book of Moses. And so did they with the oxen.
They set aside the burnt offerings to be given to the divisions of the families of the people to offer to the LORD, as is written in the Book of Moses; and they did the same with the bulls.
And they
roasted the
passover with fire according to the
ordinance: but the other holy offerings
sod they in pots, and in caldrons, and in pans, and divided them speedily among all the
people.
They
roasted the
Passover animals on the fire according to the regulation, and they boiled the other holy offerings in pots, kettles, and
bowls and quickly brought them to all the
people.
And there was no
passover like to that kept in Israel from the days of Samuel the prophet; neither did all the kings of Israel keep such a
passover as
Josiah kept, and the priests, and the Levites, and all Judah and Israel that were present, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
No such
Passover had been observed in Israel since the days of Samuel the prophet. None of the kings of Israel ever observed a
Passover like the one that
Josiah observed with the priests, the Levites, all Judah, the Israelites who were present, and the
people of Jerusalem.
Then the
people of the land took
Jehoahaz the son of
Josiah, and made him king in his father’s
stead in Jerusalem.
Then the
people of the land took
Jehoahaz son of
Josiah and made him king in Jerusalem in place of his father.
Moreover all the chief of the priests, and the
people,
transgressed very much after all the abominations of the heathen; and
polluted the house of the LORD which he had
hallowed in Jerusalem.
Furthermore, all the leaders of the priests and the
people multiplied their unfaithful deeds, following all the abominations of the nations, and they
defiled the house of the LORD, which He had consecrated in Jerusalem.
And the LORD God of their fathers sent to them by his messengers, rising up
betimes, and sending; because he had
compassion on his
people, and on his dwelling place:
Again and again the LORD, the God of their fathers, sent word to His
people through His messengers because He had
compassion on them and on His dwelling place.
But they
mocked the messengers of God, and
despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his
people, till there was no remedy.
But they
mocked the messengers of God,
despising His words and
scoffing at His prophets, until the wrath of the LORD against His
people was
stirred up beyond remedy.
Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, All the kingdoms of the earth hath the LORD God of heaven given me; and he hath charged me to build him an house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Who is there among you of all his people? The LORD his God be with him, and let him go up.
“This is what Cyrus king of Persia says: ‘The LORD, the God of heaven, who has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, has appointed me to build a house for Him at Jerusalem in Judah.
Whoever among you belongs to His
people, may the LORD his God be with him, and may he go up.’”
Who is there among you of all his people? his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the house of the LORD God of Israel, (he is the God,) which is in Jerusalem.
Whoever among you belongs to His
people, may his God be with him, and may he go to Jerusalem in Judah and build the house of the LORD, the God of Israel; He is the God who is in Jerusalem.
Now these are the children of the province that went up out of the captivity, of those which had been carried away, whom
Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away unto Babylon, and came again unto Jerusalem and Judah, every one unto his city;
Now these are the
people of the province who came up from the captivity of the exiles carried away to Babylon by
Nebuchadnezzar its king. They returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town,
Which came with
Zerubbabel: Jeshua,
Nehemiah, Seraiah, Reelaiah,
Mordecai, Bilshan, Mizpar, Bigvai, Rehum, Baanah. The number of the men of the
people of Israel:
accompanied by
Zerubbabel, Jeshua,
Nehemiah, Seraiah, Reelaiah,
Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispar, Bigvai, Rehum, and Baanah. This is the count of the men of Israel:
So the priests, and the Levites, and some of the
people, and the singers, and the
porters, and the
Nethinims, dwelt in their cities, and all Israel in their cities.
So the priests, the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants, along with some of the people, settled in their own towns; and the rest of the Israelites settled in their towns.
And when the seventh month was come, and the children of Israel were in the cities, the people gathered themselves together as one man to Jerusalem.
By the seventh month, the Israelites had settled in their towns, and the people assembled as one man in Jerusalem.
And they set the altar upon his bases; for fear was upon them because of the
people of those countries: and they offered burnt offerings
thereon unto the LORD, even burnt offerings morning and evening.
They set up the altar on its foundation and sacrificed burnt offerings on it to the LORD—both the morning and evening burnt offerings—even though they feared the people of the land.
They gave money also unto the masons, and to the carpenters; and meat, and drink, and oil, unto them of Zidon, and to them of Tyre, to bring
cedar trees from
Lebanon to the sea of
Joppa, according to the grant that they had of Cyrus king of Persia.
They gave money to the masons and carpenters, and food and drink and oil to the
people of
Sidon and Tyre to bring
cedar logs from
Lebanon to
Joppa by sea, as authorized by Cyrus king of Persia.
And they
sang together by course in praising and giving
thanks unto the LORD; because he is good, for his mercy endureth for ever toward Israel. And all the
people shouted with a great
shout, when they praised the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid.
And they
sang responsively with praise and
thanksgiving to the LORD: “For He is good; for His loving devotion to Israel endures
forever.” Then all the
people gave a great
shout of praise to the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD had been laid.
So that the
people could not
discern the noise of the
shout of joy from the noise of the
weeping of the
people: for the
people shouted with a loud
shout, and the noise was heard
afar off.
The
people could not distinguish the shouts of joy from the sound of
weeping, because the
people were making so much noise. And the sound was heard from
afar.
Then the
people of the land
weakened the hands of the
people of Judah, and troubled them in building,
Then the people of the land set out to discourage the people of Judah and make them afraid to build.
And in the reign of
Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they unto him an
accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.
And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble
Asnapper brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and the rest that are on this side the river, and at such a time.
and the rest of the
peoples whom the great and honorable Ashurbanipal
deported and settled in the cities of Samaria and elsewhere west of the Euphrates.
Be it known unto the king, that we went into the province of
Judea, to the house of the great God, which is builded with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls, and this work goeth fast on, and prospereth in their hands.
Let it be known to the king that we went into the province of Judah, to the house of the great God. The
people are rebuilding it with large stones, and placing timbers in the walls. This work is being carried out
diligently and is
prospering in their hands.
But after that our fathers had
provoked the God of heaven unto wrath, he gave them into the hand of
Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, the
Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the
people away into Babylon.
But since our fathers angered the God of heaven, He delivered them into the hand of
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the
Chaldean who destroyed this temple and carried away the
people to Babylon.
And the God that hath caused his name to dwell there destroy all kings and
people, that shall put to their hand to alter and to destroy this house of God which is at Jerusalem. I
Darius have made a decree; let it be done with speed.
May God, who has caused His Name to dwell there, overthrow any king or
people who lifts a hand to alter this decree or to destroy this house of God in Jerusalem. I,
Darius, have issued the decree. Let it be carried out with
diligence.
And the children of Israel, the priests, and the Levites, and the rest of the children of the captivity, kept the
dedication of this house of God with joy,
Then the
people of Israel—the priests, the Levites, and the rest of the exiles—celebrated the
dedication of the house of God with joy.
And the children of Israel, which were come again out of captivity, and all such as had separated themselves unto them from the
filthiness of the heathen of the land, to seek the LORD God of Israel, did eat,
The Israelites who had returned from exile
ate it, together with all who had separated themselves from the uncleanness of the
peoples of the land to seek the LORD, the God of Israel.
I make a decree, that all they of the
people of Israel, and of his priests and Levites, in my realm, which are minded of their own
freewill to go up to Jerusalem, go with thee.
I
hereby decree that any
volunteers among the Israelites in my kingdom, including the priests and Levites, may go up with you to Jerusalem.
And all the silver and gold that thou canst find in all the province of Babylon, with the
freewill offering of the
people, and of the priests, offering willingly for the house of their God which is in Jerusalem:
together with all the silver and gold you may find in all the province of Babylon, as well as the
freewill offerings of the
people and priests to the house of their God in Jerusalem.
And thou,
Ezra, after the wisdom of thy God, that is in thine hand, set magistrates and judges, which may judge all the
people that are beyond the river, all such as know the laws of thy God; and teach ye them that know them not.
And you,
Ezra, according to the wisdom of your God which you possess, are to
appoint magistrates and judges to judge all the
people west of the Euphrates—all who know the laws of your God. And you are to teach these laws to
anyone who does not know them.
And I gathered them together to the river than runneth to
Ahava; and there abode we in tents three days: and I viewed the
people, and the priests, and found there none of the sons of Levi.
Now I assembled these exiles at the canal that flows to
Ahava, and we camped there three days. And when I searched among the
people and priests, I found no Levites there.
And they delivered the king’s commissions unto the king’s lieutenants, and to the governors on this side the river: and they furthered the people, and the house of God.
They also delivered the king’s edicts to the royal satraps and governors of the region west of the Euphrates, who proceeded to assist the people and the house of God.
Now when these things were done, the princes came to me, saying, The
people of Israel, and the priests, and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the
people of the lands, doing according to their abominations, even of the
Canaanites, the
Hittites, the
Perizzites, the Jebusites, the
Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the
Amorites.
After these things had been accomplished, the leaders approached me and said, “The
people of Israel, including the priests and Levites, have not kept themselves separate from the surrounding
peoples whose abominations are like those of the
Canaanites,
Hittites,
Perizzites, Jebusites,
Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians, and
Amorites.
For they have taken of their daughters for themselves, and for their sons: so that the holy seed have mingled themselves with the
people of those lands:
yea, the hand of the princes and rulers hath been chief in this
trespass.
Indeed, the Israelites have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and their sons, so that the holy seed has been mixed with the people of the land. And the leaders and officials have taken the lead in this unfaithfulness!”
Which thou hast commanded by thy servants the prophets, saying, The land, unto which ye go to possess it, is an unclean land with the
filthiness of the
people of the lands, with their abominations, which have filled it from one end to another with their uncleanness.
that You gave through Your servants the prophets, saying: ‘The land that you are entering to possess is a land
polluted by the impurity of its
peoples and the abominations with which they have filled it from end to end.
Should we again break thy commandments, and join in affinity with the
people of these abominations? wouldest not thou be
angry with us till thou hadst consumed us, so that there should be no
remnant nor escaping?
shall we again break Your commandments and
intermarry with the
peoples who commit these abominations? Would You not become so
angry with us as to
wipe us out, leaving no
remnant or
survivor?
Now when
Ezra had prayed, and when he had
confessed,
weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the
people wept very
sore.
While
Ezra prayed and made this confession,
weeping and falling facedown before the house of God, a very large assembly of Israelites—men, women, and children—gathered around him, and the
people wept bitterly as well.
And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of
Elam, answered and said unto
Ezra, We have
trespassed against our God, and have taken strange wives of the
people of the land: yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing.
Then Shecaniah son of Jehiel, an
Elamite, said to
Ezra: “We have been unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women from the
people of the land, yet in spite of this, there is hope for Israel.
Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered themselves together unto Jerusalem within three days. It was the ninth month, on the
twentieth day of the month; and all the
people sat in the street of the house of God,
trembling because of this matter, and for the great rain.
So within the three days, all the men of Judah and Benjamin assembled in Jerusalem, and on the
twentieth day of the ninth month, all the
people sat in the square at the house of God,
trembling regarding this matter and because of the heavy rain.
Now therefore make confession unto the LORD God of your fathers, and do his pleasure: and separate
yourselves from the
people of the land, and from the strange wives.
Now, therefore, make a confession to the LORD, the God of your fathers, and do His will. Separate
yourselves from the
people of the land and from your foreign wives.”
But the
people are many, and it is a time of much rain, and we are not able to stand without, neither is this a work of one day or two: for we are many that have
transgressed in this thing.
But there are many
people here, and it is the
rainy season. We are not able to stay out in the open. Nor is this the work of one or two days, for we have
transgressed greatly in this matter.
