Sodom said unto
Abram, Give me the
persons, and take the goods to
thyself.
And
Esau took his wives, and his sons, and his daughters, and all the
persons of his house, and his cattle, and all his beasts, and all his substance, which he had got in the land of
Canaan; and went into the country from the face of his brother Jacob.
Later,
Esau took his wives and sons and daughters and all the people of his household, along with his
livestock, all his other animals, and all the property he had acquired in
Canaan, and he moved to a land far away from his brother Jacob.
And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him
overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.
Joseph found favor in his sight and became his
personal attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household and entrusted him with everything he owned.
And he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand; and he knew not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured.
So Potiphar left all that he owned in Joseph’s care; he did not
concern himself with anything except the food he
ate. Now Joseph was well-built and handsome,
And the captain of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he served them: and they continued a season in ward.
The captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, and he became their
personal attendant. After they had been in
custody for some time,
I will be
surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him: if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the
blame for ever:
I will
guarantee his safety. You may hold me
personally responsible. If I do not bring him back and set him before you, then may I bear the guilt before you all my life.
Then Judah came near unto him, and said, Oh my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord’s ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant: for thou art even as Pharaoh.
Then Judah approached Joseph and said, “Sir, please let your servant speak
personally to my lord. Do not be
angry with your servant, for you are equal to Pharaoh himself.
All the souls that came with Jacob into Egypt, which came out of his loins, besides Jacob’s sons’ wives, all the souls were
threescore and six;
All those belonging to Jacob who came to Egypt—his direct descendants, besides the wives of Jacob’s sons—numbered sixty-six persons.
Seven days shall there be no
leaven found in your houses: for
whosoever eateth that which is
leavened, even that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he be a stranger, or born in the land.
For seven days there must be no
leaven found in your houses. If
anyone eats something
leavened, that
person, whether a foreigner or native of the land, must be cut off from the congregation of Israel.
And when a stranger shall
sojourn with thee, and will keep the
passover to the LORD, let all his males be
circumcised, and then let him come near and keep it; and he shall be as one that is born in the land: for no
uncircumcised person shall eat thereof.
This is the thing which the LORD hath commanded, Gather of it every man according to his eating, an
omer for every man, according to the number of your
persons; take ye every man for them which are in his tents.
This is what the LORD has commanded: ‘Each one is to gather as much as he needs. You may take an
omer for each
person in your tent.’”
And it came to pass, that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for one man: and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses.

Then wrought Bezaleel and Aholiab, and every wise hearted man, in whom the LORD put wisdom and understanding to know how to work all manner of work for the service of the sanctuary, according to all that the LORD had commanded.
“So Bezalel, Oholiab, and every skilled person are to carry out everything commanded by the LORD, who has given them skill and ability to know how to perform all the work of constructing the sanctuary.”
And Moses called Bezaleel and Aholiab, and every wise hearted man, in whose heart the LORD had put wisdom, even every one whose heart
stirred him up to come unto the work to do it:
Then Moses summoned Bezalel, Oholiab, and every skilled
person whom the LORD had gifted—
everyone whose heart
stirred him to come and do the work.

bekah for every man, that is, half a
shekel, after the
shekel of the sanctuary, for every one that went to be numbered, from twenty years old and upward, for six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty men.
a beka per
person, that is, half a
shekel, according to the sanctuary
shekel, from
everyone twenty years of age or older who had crossed over to be numbered, a total of 603,550 men.
Or if a soul touch any unclean thing, whether it be a
carcase of an unclean beast, or a
carcase of unclean cattle, or the
carcase of unclean
creeping things, and if it be hidden from him; he also shall be unclean, and guilty.
Or if a
person touches anything unclean—whether the
carcass of any unclean wild animal or
livestock or
crawling creature—even if he is unaware of it, he is unclean and guilty.
But the soul that eateth of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings, that
pertain unto the LORD, having his uncleanness upon him, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.
But if
anyone who is unclean eats meat from the peace offering that belongs to the LORD, that
person must be cut off from his people.
Moreover the soul that shall touch any unclean thing, as the uncleanness of man, or any unclean beast, or any
abominable unclean thing, and eat of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings, which
pertain unto the LORD, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.
If one touches anything unclean, whether human uncleanness, an unclean animal, or any unclean,
detestable thing, and then eats any of the meat of the peace offering that belongs to the LORD, that
person must be cut off from his people.”
Whatsoever soul it be that eateth any manner of blood, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.
If
anyone eats blood, that
person must be cut off from his people.’”
If the bright spot be white in the skin of his flesh, and in sight be not deeper than the skin, and the hair thereof be not turned white; then the priest shall shut up him that hath the plague seven days:
If, however, the spot on his skin is white and does not appear to be deeper than the skin, and the hair in it has not turned white, the priest shall
isolate the
infected person for seven days.
And the priest shall look on him again the seventh day: and, behold, if the plague be somewhat dark, and the plague spread not in the skin, the priest shall
pronounce him clean: it is but a
scab: and he shall wash his clothes, and be clean.
The priest will examine him again on the seventh day, and if the
sore has
faded and has not spread on the skin, the priest shall
pronounce him clean; it is a
rash. The
person must wash his clothes and be clean.
And if a
leprosy break out abroad in the skin, and the
leprosy cover all the skin of him that hath the plague from his head even to his foot,
wheresoever the priest looketh;
But if the skin disease breaks out all over his skin so that it covers all the skin of the
infected person from head to foot, as far as the priest can see,
Then the priest shall consider: and, behold, if the
leprosy have covered all his flesh, he shall
pronounce him clean that hath the plague: it is all turned white: he is clean.
the priest shall examine him, and if the disease has covered his entire body, he is to
pronounce the
infected person clean. Since it has all turned white, he is clean.
And the priest shall see him: and, behold, if the plague be turned into white; then the priest shall
pronounce him clean that hath the plague: he is clean.
The priest will reexamine him, and if the
infection has turned white, the priest is to
pronounce the
infected person clean; then he is clean.
And if the priest look on the plague of the
scall, and, behold, it be not in sight deeper than the skin, and that there is no black hair in it; then the priest shall shut up him that hath the plague of the
scall seven days:
But if the priest examines the
scaly infection and it does not appear to be deeper than the skin, and there is no black hair in it, the priest shall
isolate the
infected person for seven days.
He shall be
shaven, but the
scall shall he not
shave; and the priest shall shut up him that hath the
scall seven days more:
then the
person must
shave himself except for the
scaly area. Then the priest shall
isolate him for another seven days.
Then the priest shall look on him: and, behold, if the
scall be spread in the skin, the priest shall not seek for yellow hair; he is unclean.
the priest is to examine him, and if the
scaly outbreak has spread on the skin, the priest need not look for yellow hair; the
person is unclean.
Then the priest shall look: and, behold, if the bright spots in the skin of their flesh be
darkish white; it is a
freckled spot that groweth in the skin; he is clean.
the priest shall examine them, and if the spots are dull white, it is a
harmless rash that has broken out on the skin; the
person is clean.
And the
leper in whom the plague is, his clothes shall be rent, and his head bare, and he shall put a covering upon his upper
lip, and shall cry, Unclean, unclean.
A diseased
person must wear
torn clothes and let his hair
hang loose, and he must cover his mouth and cry out, ‘Unclean, unclean!’
And the priest shall go forth out of the camp; and the priest shall look, and, behold, if the plague of
leprosy be
healed in the
leper;
The priest is to go outside the camp to examine him, and if the skin disease of the
afflicted person has
healed,
And if he be poor, and cannot get so much; then he shall take one lamb for a
trespass offering to be waved, to make an
atonement for him, and one tenth deal of fine flour mingled with oil for a meat offering, and a log of oil;
If, however, the
person is poor and cannot afford these offerings, he is to take one male lamb as a guilt offering to be waved to make
atonement for him, along with a tenth of an
ephah of fine flour mixed with olive oil for a grain offering, a log of olive oil,
And if he that hath the issue
spit upon him that is clean; then he shall wash his clothes, and
bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even.
If the man with the discharge spits on one who is clean, that
person must wash his clothes and
bathe with water, and he will be unclean until evening.
And
whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that
sojourn among you, that eateth any manner of blood; I will even set my face against that soul that eateth blood, and will cut him off from among his people.
If
anyone from the house of Israel or a foreigner living among them eats any blood, I will set My face against that
person and cut him off from among his people.
And every soul that eateth that which died of itself, or that which was
torn with beasts, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger, he shall both wash his clothes, and
bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even: then shall he be clean.
And any
person, whether native or foreigner, who eats anything found dead or
mauled by wild beasts must wash his clothes and
bathe with water, and he will be unclean until evening; then he will be clean.
Therefore every one that eateth it shall bear his iniquity, because he hath
profaned the
hallowed thing of the LORD: and that soul shall be cut off from among his people.
Whoever eats it will bear his iniquity, for he has
profaned what is holy to the LORD. That
person must be cut off from his people.
Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment: thou shalt not respect the person of the poor, nor honour the person of the mighty: but in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbour.
And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a
whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people.
Whoever turns to mediums or spiritists to
prostitute himself with them, I will also set My face against that
person and cut him off from his people.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Speak unto the priests the sons of Aaron, and say unto them, There shall none be
defiled for the dead among his people:
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Speak to Aaron’s sons, the priests, and tell them that a priest is not to
defile himself for a dead
person among his people,
Say unto them,
Whosoever he be of all your seed among your generations, that goeth unto the holy things, which the children of Israel
hallow unto the LORD, having his uncleanness upon him, that soul shall be cut off from my presence: I am the LORD.
Tell them that for the generations to come, if any of their descendants in a state of uncleanness approaches the sacred offerings that the Israelites
consecrate to the LORD, that
person must be cut off from My presence. I am the LORD.
Or
whosoever toucheth any
creeping thing, whereby he may be made unclean, or a man of whom he may take uncleanness,
whatsoever uncleanness he hath;
or
whoever touches a
crawling creature or a
person that makes him unclean, whatever the uncleanness may be—
Breach for breach, eye for eye, tooth for tooth: as he hath caused a
blemish in a man, so shall it be done to him again.
fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. Just as he injured the other person, the same must be inflicted on him.
Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When a man shall make a singular
vow, the
persons shall be for the LORD by thy
estimation.
“Speak to the Israelites and say to them, ‘When someone makes a special
vow to the LORD involving the value of
persons,
And if it be from five years old even unto twenty years old, then thy
estimation shall be of the male twenty shekels, and for the female ten shekels.
And if the
person is from five to twenty years of age, then your
valuation for the male shall be twenty shekels, and for the female ten shekels.
And if it be from a month old even unto five years old, then thy
estimation shall be of the male five shekels of silver, and for the female thy
estimation shall be three shekels of silver.
Now if the
person is from one month to five years of age, then your
valuation for the male shall be five shekels of silver, and for the female three shekels of silver.
And if it be from sixty years old and above; if it be a male, then thy
estimation shall be fifteen shekels, and for the female ten shekels.
And if the
person is sixty years of age or older, then your
valuation shall be fifteen shekels for the male and ten shekels for the female.
But if he be poorer than thy
estimation, then he shall present himself before the priest, and the priest shall value him; according to his ability that
vowed shall the priest value him.
But if the one making the
vow is too poor to pay the
valuation, he is to present the
person before the priest, who shall set the value according to what the one making the
vow can afford.
None devoted, which shall be devoted of men, shall be redeemed; but shall surely be put to death.
No
person set apart for destruction may be
ransomed; he must surely be put to death.
Speak unto the children of Israel, When a man or woman shall commit any sin that men commit, to do a
trespass against the LORD, and that
person be guilty;
“Tell the Israelites that when a man or woman acts unfaithfully against the LORD by
committing any sin against another, that
person is guilty
And if any soul sin through ignorance, then he shall bring a she goat of the first year for a sin offering.
Also, if one
person sins
unintentionally, he is to present a year-old female goat as a sin offering.
And the priest shall make an
atonement for the soul that sinneth ignorantly, when he sinneth by ignorance before the LORD, to make an
atonement for him; and it shall be
forgiven him.
But the soul that doeth ought
presumptuously, whether he be born in the land, or a stranger, the same reproacheth the LORD; and that soul shall be cut off from among his people.
But the person who sins defiantly, whether a native or foreigner, blasphemes the LORD. That person shall be cut off from among his people.
And he spake unto
Korah and unto all his company, saying, Even to
morrow the LORD will
shew who are his, and who is holy; and will cause him to come near unto him: even him whom he hath chosen will he cause to come near unto him.
Then he said to
Korah and all his followers, “
Tomorrow morning the LORD will
reveal who belongs to Him and who is holy, and He will bring that
person near to Himself. The one He chooses, He will bring near to Himself.
And this is thine; the
heave offering of their gift, with all the wave offerings of the children of Israel: I have given them unto thee, and to thy sons and to thy daughters with thee, by a statute for ever: every one that is clean in thy house shall eat of it.
And this is yours as well: the offering of their gifts, along with all the wave offerings of the Israelites. I have given this to you and your sons and daughters as a permanent statute. Every
ceremonially clean
person in your household may eat it.
And
whatsoever is first ripe in the land, which they shall bring unto the LORD, shall be thine; every one that is clean in thine house shall eat of it.
The firstfruits of everything in their land that they bring to the LORD will belong to you. Every
ceremonially clean
person in your household may eat them.
Whosoever toucheth the dead body of any man that is dead, and purifieth not himself, defileth the tabernacle of the LORD; and that soul shall be cut off from Israel: because the water of separation was not
sprinkled upon him, he shall be unclean; his uncleanness is yet upon him.
Anyone who touches a human
corpse and fails to
purify himself defiles the tabernacle of the LORD. That
person must be cut off from Israel. He remains unclean, because the water of
purification has not been
sprinkled on him, and his uncleanness is still on him.
This is the law, when a man dieth in a tent: all that come into the tent, and all that is in the tent, shall be unclean seven days.
This is the law when a
person dies in a tent:
Everyone who enters the tent and
everyone already in the tent will be unclean for seven days,
And for an unclean
person they shall take of the ashes of the burnt
heifer of
purification for sin, and running water shall be put
thereto in a vessel:
For the
purification of the unclean
person, take some of the ashes of the burnt sin offering, put them in a
jar, and pour fresh water over them.
And a clean
person shall take
hyssop, and dip it in the water, and
sprinkle it upon the tent, and upon all the vessels, and upon the
persons that were there, and upon him that touched a bone, or one slain, or one dead, or a grave:
Then a man who is
ceremonially clean is to take some
hyssop, dip it in the water, and
sprinkle the tent, all the furnishings, and the people who were there. He is also to
sprinkle the one who touched a bone, a grave, or a
person who has died or been slain.
And the clean
person shall
sprinkle upon the unclean on the third day, and on the seventh day: and on the seventh day he shall
purify himself, and wash his clothes, and
bathe himself in water, and shall be clean at even.
The man who is
ceremonially clean is to
sprinkle the unclean
person on the third day and on the seventh day. After he purifies the unclean
person on the seventh day, the one being
cleansed must wash his clothes and
bathe in water, and that evening he will be clean.
But the man that shall be unclean, and shall not
purify himself, that soul shall be cut off from among the congregation, because he hath
defiled the sanctuary of the LORD: the water of separation hath not been
sprinkled upon him; he is unclean.
But if a
person who is unclean does not
purify himself, he will be cut off from the assembly, because he has
defiled the sanctuary of the LORD. The water of
purification has not been
sprinkled on him; he is unclean.
And
whatsoever the unclean
person toucheth shall be unclean; and the soul that toucheth it shall be unclean until even.
Anything the unclean
person touches will become unclean, and
anyone who touches it will be unclean until evening.”
All of you who have killed a
person or touched the dead are to remain outside the camp for seven days. On the third day and the seventh day you are to
purify both
yourselves and your
captives.
And
levy a tribute unto the LORD of the men of war which went out to battle: one soul of five hundred, both of the
persons, and of the
beeves, and of the
asses, and of the sheep:
Set aside a tribute for the LORD from what belongs to the soldiers who went into battle: one out of every five hundred, whether
persons, cattle,
donkeys, or sheep.
And of the children of Israel’s half, thou shalt take one portion of fifty, of the
persons, of the
beeves, of the
asses, and of the flocks, of all manner of beasts, and give them unto the Levites, which keep the charge of the tabernacle of the LORD.
From the Israelites’ half, take one out of every fifty, whether
persons, cattle,
donkeys, sheep, or other animals, and give them to the Levites who keep charge of the tabernacle of the LORD.”
And thirty and two thousand persons in all, of women that had not known man by lying with him.
and 32,000 women who had not
slept with a man.
And the persons were sixteen thousand; of which the LORD’S tribute was thirty and two persons.
and 16,000 people, including a tribute to the LORD of 32.
And sixteen thousand persons;)
and 16,000 people.
Even of the children of Israel’s half, Moses took one portion of fifty, both of man and of beast, and gave them unto the Levites, which kept the charge of the tabernacle of the LORD; as the LORD commanded Moses.
From the Israelites’ half, Moses took one out of every fifty persons and animals and gave them to the Levites who kept charge of the tabernacle of the LORD, as the LORD had commanded him.
Then ye shall
appoint you cities to be cities of refuge for you; that the
slayer may
flee thither, which killeth any
person at unawares.
These six cities shall be a refuge, both for the children of Israel, and for the stranger, and for the
sojourner among them: that every one that killeth any
person unawares may
flee thither.
These six cities will serve as a refuge for the Israelites and for the foreigner or stranger among them, so that
anyone who kills a
person unintentionally may
flee there.
And if he
smite him with an instrument of iron, so that he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.
If, however,
anyone strikes a
person with an iron object and kills him, he is a murderer; the murderer must surely be put to death.
But if he thrust him suddenly without
enmity, or have cast upon him any thing without laying of wait,
Whoso killeth any
person, the murderer shall be put to death by the mouth of witnesses: but one witness shall not
testify against any
person to cause him to die.
If
anyone kills a
person, the murderer is to be put to death on the testimony of the witnesses. But no one is to be put to death based on the testimony of a
lone witness.
And ye shall take no satisfaction for him that is fled to the city of his refuge, that he should come again to dwell in the land, until the death of the priest.
Nor should you accept a
ransom for the
person who flees to a city of refuge and allow him to return and live on his own land before the death of the high priest.
Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; but ye shall hear the small as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God’s: and the cause that is too hard for you, bring it unto me, and I will hear it.
Show no
partiality in judging; hear both small and great alike. Do not be
intimidated by
anyone, for judgment belongs to God. And bring to me any case too difficult for you, and I will hear it.”
For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward:
For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, mighty, and
awesome God, showing no
partiality and accepting no
bribe.
Thy fathers went down into Egypt with
threescore and ten
persons; and now the LORD thy God hath made thee as the stars of heaven for multitude.
Your fathers went down to Egypt, seventy in all, and now the LORD your God has made you as numerous as the stars in the sky.
Thou shalt eat it within thy gates: the unclean and the clean
person shall eat it alike, as the
roebuck, and as the
hart.
Eat it within your gates; both the
ceremonially unclean and clean may eat it as they would a
gazelle or a deer.
Thou shalt not
wrest judgment; thou shalt not respect
persons, neither take a gift: for a gift
doth blind the eyes of the wise, and
pervert the words of the righteous.
Do not deny justice or show
partiality. Do not accept a
bribe, for a
bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the righteous.
Then shalt thou bring forth that man or that woman, which have committed that wicked thing, unto thy gates, even that man or that woman, and shalt stone them with stones, till they die.
you must bring out to your gates the man or woman who has done this evil thing, and you must stone that person to death.
Cursed be he that taketh reward to
slay an innocent
person. And all the people shall say,
Amen.
‘
Cursed is he who accepts a
bribe to kill an innocent
person.’ And let all the people say, ‘
Amen!’
A nation of fierce countenance, which shall not regard the
person of the old, nor
shew favour to the young:
a
ruthless nation with no respect for the old and no
pity for the young.
And it come to pass, when he heareth the words of this
curse, that he
bless himself in his heart, saying, I shall have peace, though I walk in the imagination of mine heart, to add
drunkenness to
thirst:
because when such a
person hears the words of this oath, he invokes a blessing on himself, saying, ‘I will have peace, even though I walk in the
stubbornness of my own heart.’ This will bring
disaster on the watered land as well as the dry.
These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth among them, that
whosoever killeth any
person at unawares might
flee thither, and not die by the hand of the
avenger of blood, until he stood before the congregation.
These are the cities appointed for all the Israelites and foreigners among them, so that
anyone who kills a
person unintentionally may
flee there and not die by the hand of the
avenger of blood prior to standing trial before the assembly.
Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of
Shechem, Whether is better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, which are
threescore and ten
persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.
“Please ask all the leaders of
Shechem, ‘Is it better for you that seventy men, all the sons of Jerubbaal, rule over you, or just one man?’ Remember that I am your own flesh and blood.”
So they gave him seventy shekels of silver from the temple of
Baal-berith, with which
Abimelech hired some worthless and
reckless men to follow him.
And he went unto his father’s house at Ophrah, and
slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being
threescore and ten
persons, upon one stone: notwithstanding yet Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he
hid himself.
He went to his father’s house in Ophrah, and on one stone murdered his seventy brothers, the sons of Jerubbaal. But Jotham, the youngest son of Jerubbaal, survived, because he
hid himself.
And ye are risen up against my father’s house this day, and have slain his sons,
threescore and ten
persons, upon one stone, and have made
Abimelech, the son of his
maidservant, king over the men of
Shechem, because he is your brother;)
but you have risen up against my father’s house this day and killed his seventy sons on a single stone, and you have made
Abimelech, the son of his
maidservant, king over the leaders of
Shechem because he is your brother—
And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be a priest unto the house of one man, or that thou be a priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?
“Be quiet,” they told him. “Put your hand over your mouth and come with us and be a father and a priest to us. Is it better for you to be a priest for the house of one person or a priest for a tribe and family in Israel?”
And when the men of Israel retired in the battle, Benjamin began to
smite and kill of the men of Israel about thirty
persons: for they said, Surely they are
smitten down before us, as in the first battle.
the men of Israel would turn in the battle. When the Benjamites had begun to strike them down, killing about thirty men of Israel, they said, “They are defeated before us as in the first battle.”
And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people.
And he had a son named Saul, choice and handsome, without equal among the Israelites—a head taller than any of the people.
And Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the parlour, and made them sit in the chiefest place among them that were
bidden, which were about thirty
persons.
Then Samuel took Saul and his servant, brought them into the hall, and seated them in the place of honor among those who were invited—about thirty in all.
And the Spirit of the LORD will come upon thee, and thou shalt
prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.
Then the Spirit of the LORD will
rush upon you, and you will
prophesy with them; and you will be transformed into a different
person.
Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of
Jesse the
Bethlehemite, that is
cunning in playing, and a mighty
valiant man, and a man of war, and
prudent in matters, and a comely
person, and the LORD is with him.
One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of
Jesse of
Bethlehem who knows how to play the
harp. He is a mighty man of
valor, a
warrior,
eloquent and handsome, and the LORD is with him.”
And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the
Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests, and
slew on that day
fourscore and five
persons that did wear a linen
ephod.
So the king ordered Doeg, “You turn and strike down the priests!” And Doeg the
Edomite turned and struck down the priests himself. On that day he killed eighty-five men who
wore the linen
ephod.
And David said unto
Abiathar, I knew it that day, when Doeg the
Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul: I have occasioned the death of all the
persons of thy father’s house.
Then David said to
Abiathar, “I knew that Doeg the
Edomite was there that day, and that he was sure to tell Saul. I myself am responsible for the lives of
everyone in your father’s house.
So David received of her hand that which she had brought him, and said unto her, Go up in peace to thine house; see, I have
hearkened to thy voice, and have accepted thy
person.
Then David accepted from her hand what she had brought him, and he said to her, “Go home in peace. See, I have
heeded your voice and granted your request.”
How much more, when wicked men have slain a righteous person in his own house upon his bed? shall I not therefore now require his blood of your hand, and take you away from the earth?
How much more, when wicked men kill a righteous man in his own house and on his own bed, shall I not now require his blood from your hands and remove you from the earth!”
Then David returned to
bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, How glorious was the king of Israel
today, who uncovered himself to day in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the vain fellows
shamelessly uncovereth himself!
As soon as David returned home to
bless his own household, Saul’s daughter Michal came out to meet him. “How the king of Israel has distinguished himself
today!” she said. “He has uncovered himself
today in the sight of the maidservants of his subjects, like a vulgar
person would do.”
